”LADIES AAAAAAAND GENTLEMEEEEEEN! WEEEELCOME BACK TO THE MOST STUNNING, MOST AWESOME AND STUPENDOUS RACE THAT YOU’LL EVER HAVE THE PLEASURE TO SEE WITH YOUR OWN EYES!”

“TODAY WE BRING YOU THE NATIONAL SHIFT, THE FIRST THIS SEASON! WE’VE GOT PLENTY OF DIFFERENT COMPETITORS HERE TODAY, SO WHY DON’T YOU LIST THEM OFF, DIGS?”

“Of course. Today we’ve got a range of people from all over, going from the Canyons of Canar’s own hometown, to the furthest stretches of the coast. We’ve got racers young and old, with names that you say every day or some that are entirely new to you. With the final racers all here that are eligible for the Final Shift, let’s give them a hand as I call them out!”

“First of all, we have the infamous due, the Silicon Sisters! They’re known for being the head of the computer juggernaut Sili-Corp, producers of many of the computers that you use and enjoy today! Their car seems to be a quad-thruster hover-frame, with all the thrusters on their own gimbals to allow for that extra maneuverability! We can also see some suspiciously blank spots where more likely than not they have some electronic warfare brewing, ready to take down any other driver who thinks they can dominate the tech-space.”

“Next up, we have Marvin McIntyre, the actor from everyone’s favorite movie, Fast and Furious Nine-Hundred-And-Seventy-Two: This Time, It’s Personal! But he’s not just your average celebrity: all of his stunts are real, performed by him, and he’s actually brought in the real car from the movie, with a few upgrades, to show you exactly what he can do behind the wheel!”

“Then we have the Old and the Bold, the lovely couple Annie and Drew! This racing team has been drifting around corners since before your own parents were born! One of the oldest pairs of racers you can find in this galaxy, they were born to race! Watch out for those caterpillar tracks of theirs, spiked as they are: they feel no remorse for driving over their fellow racers!”

“Hailing from the Far South, we’ve got Gunslinger Gary! A provider of fine weapons for most of this continent, Gary’s got a taste for racing, and he’ll show you just how good he is with anything powered by explosions! In fact, he’ll be racing with his own home-brew matter-annihilator, which he’ll be tossing Capsules into without a care!”

“Next on the list is Monsieur Maverick, a real piece of work who’s aiming for the Redline, and won’t stop here to get there! Bordering just on the edge of breaking numerous galactic peace treaties, the thing propels itself with a Spacefighter-grade thruster! Of course, it would be a complete accident and terrible tragedy if he somehow drifted in front of someone and burned their frames to a crisp!”

“Next, we have Lisa Soronos, the daughter of the famed Mikivaeli Soronos, who provides the government with nearly all their vehicles! She’ll be piloting a custom-made frame with an AI pilot! Thanks to some workarounds and extreme bribery on her father’s part, it appears that that’s A-Okay, and she’ll get to drink tea for the entirety of the race while she takes the lead!”

“Coming to the end now, we’ve got Arachnia, the girl who’s dust you’ll eat at least eight times over your life, even while you’re asleep! She’s running with an interesting combo frame based on her name, a eight-legged arachnid with caterpillar tracks for legs and thrusters on the joints! She’s also got a few surprises I’m sure, so try not to get caught in her web!”

“And last, but certainly not least, we have Mikoto! Known as That Guy Who Kinda Absolutely Wrecked Last Year’s Shift With His Plain Superiority, he’s running with an absolutely insane Dual Morosa-Twelve set up, more than likely carrying a matter-condensor to hold all the fuel he’s going to be using up! You might think the power behind this frame is absurd, but the control and determination that Mikoto has makes a deadly combo with the insanity that is his frame.”

“THANKS FOR THE OVERVIEW, DIGS! IT’S THIRTY MINUTES TO THE RACE, SO LET’S WATCH AS THEY ALL WARM UP AND PREPARE FOR A RACE OF A LIFETIME!”

The crowd roars their approval, and the gigantic scoreboards hovering up in the sky switch over to display the map of the track, looping back and forth through the canyons. A few dotted lines mark out shortcuts, and fields of red indicate mined land (a risk-reward trade off for whether it's worth it to drive through).

The noise swallows the Canyons, and the people prepare for the race.

It’s almost time, and you’re taking the final chance to go over your car and make sure that you know exactly what you’re capable of.

Wheels (appropriated from a Space-fighter’s landing gears): Check.

Engines (Morosa-Twelves, because you can never have enough torque): Check

Carbon nano-tube frame, superbly put together by an excellent engineer (just don’t let him hear it): Check.

Molecular Breaks (You think that’s how you stop, but you haven’t used any in a while): Check.

You take in a breath and let it out slowly, feeling the sense of preparation settle upon you. You’re ready, now. No matter what butterflies or other insects try to make a home in your stomach, you’re prepared to take on this race with everything you’ve got.

Rench stumbles on over, seeming a bit out of it. “He complimented my work again,” he says, his eyes unfocusing and looking to a world beyond. “He said I was good at this.”

You pat him on the back. “Of course, Rench. It’s what you do. Now come on, let’s take care of the final steps.”

“Right. Got it.” Rench shakes himself and stands straight, pulling a small black box from his pocket, which he hands to you. “Here are the capsules. Three of them in there. Just so you understand, that is fifteen million credits, donated ever so kindly by the warehouse I work at. They’ll be pissed if you use them all and don’t win.”

You grin and set them in your own pocket. “You’re assuming I’d even need one, Rench.”

“Yeah yeah, you’re hot shit. Anyway, anything else you want on this bad boy?”

Information about modding transmissions.

As opposed to rolling 1d100, you'd be rolling something like 1d10. Each one would offer a benefit of some kind, some better than others (obviously you'd care more about distance over how many miles a gallon you get). You'd also roll one for the negatives (of which there would be a No negative at all option.

Are you up for that?

I have two tables for rolling. One is a positive table, with some effects that you'd get from modding the car (going from having an absurdly high redline to having a large boost to your fuel efficiency) along with negatives (like the clutch is really sticky, or lower max-speed).

You'd roll 2d10, with first dice to positive table and second dice to negative table. An ideal roll would be 10 and 1, and the worst roll would be 1 and 10.

That sound good?

If it does, begin rolling.

You stand back as you let Rench do his thing. He sits inside the driver’s seat for just a bit, before snapping his fingers and springing out, heading over to the workbench. You can hear him muttering under his breath as he starts assembling some scrap together. He unlocks the bonnet and starts reaching inside, pulling out a few tubes and wires, disconnecting them and adding in some new chamber thing. From what you can see, it’s part of the Capsule Loading Module, where you would be shoving down the capsules in the race. You’re not too sure exactly what he’s doing though...

After plugging in the new chamber, he takes all the Capsules, and shoves them all inside it before you have a chance to react. He quickly closes it, and you watch in horror as an extremely bright liquid starts to flow through the tubes. Soon enough, your car is shaking slightly.

“Rench.”

”Hmm?” He looks up from the glowing chamber.

“What the fuck did you just do?”

“Well, I’m not done just yet.” He runs to the workbench again and grabs some scrap metal, and starts bolting that along all the joins of the windows. Soon enough, your vehicle is looking a bit more armored (though you notice that you’re losing visibility from it). And the chamber is still glowing.

“Anyway,” he turns to you, “I just came up with another system for the Capsule mod.”

“Please. Explain. Because you just did something that you told me I could never do.”

“Usually, you drop the Capsule right into the fuel tank. It dissolves, and gives a hell of a lot more kick.”

“That’s a bit understating it.”

“Fair enough. Point is, though, it’s used up really quickly. Really quickly. It gives you that boost, lubricates the cylinders, and lets you Redline safely for a bit. But then? Well, you quickly lose the benefits.” He points at the chamber. “What this will do is directly inject some of the capsule juice right into the cylinder, so a little bit of it will ignite along with the fuel and oxygen.”

“So...” you’re catching on, “I can make it last longer?”

“Like you wouldn’t believe. Those three capsules, if you use it wisely, could be on a constant flow through the entire race. Of course, you can always dump them as well. Good thing about this is that you can actually dump it all at once, all three capsules. The fuel flow would get cut, and only the Capsules would be used for a bit.”

“That sounds...”

“Awesome?”

You grin. “Oh, fuck yes.”

“Good luck, then. You’re going to need it.”

---

”LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! THE RACE WILL START IN ONE MINUTE! RACERS, MOVE YOUR CARS TO THE STARTING POSITIONS!”

You take a breath, and let your car roll forward a bit, feeling the entire frame humming underneath you. Down by your feet you can see the blue glow from where the Capsule light is leaking in through, which makes you feel like a god and like a ticking time-bomb.

But hey, if Rench said it was safe, then it probably is.

You stop by your point, and take the bottle of water offered by one of the officials and knock back some before handing it back. And you’re ready.

You’re just waiting, now.

“ON YOUR MARK.”

You change to first gear and get your hand on the handbreak, revving your engine in preparation.

“GET SET”

You start to build up on the revs, to a completely safe and reasonable amount of eight thousand to start with. And you take a breath.

I'll have to make the post separately. Here's the map.

All the grey areas are the mesas that stand above you. You're going to be racing in the canyons themselves, occasionally going up and over them. Whenever you see an arrow-head, that means an obstacle, be it a jump between mesas or going through a mine field.

Assume that there are going to be some obstacles in the wide open flat areas as well.

>>41650252

and Finally, the thicker grey chunks you see are where they collapsed in gaps, to make one race route. Maybe you can go over them...

>>41649311

And you let it out.

“GO!”

You shove the handbreak down and pull back on the clutch, letting the insane amount of revs instantly pull you forward and off the start. You actually manage to get the lead for a few seconds, with the extreme amounts of torque available to you making it piss-easy to get past sixty miles an hour in a short amount of time. Soon enough, the speed ticker changes over to metres a second, and you keep going.

Other cars do start to pass by you, though, but you keep up the pace, until twenty seconds in you’re at about fourth place. You can see Katherine just ahead of you, with the old couple in second place and Maverick in first.

You keep a steady acceleration, staying in the same position. When a few people try to sneak up from behind to take over, you adjust the Capsule Chamber, and feel the frame around you shake madly for a few seconds before the engines roar and everything goes calm again, though this time at a much higher, much more ridiculous speed. As a test, you see how high you can go with the constant amount of the Capsule juice flowing, and it turns out that redline literally means nothing. That’s pretty damn handy.

Which means that now, you can REALLY take advantage of the power of a good old Morosa Engine.

You easily keep pace with the rest of the pack, pulling away far enough from those behind you that you and the others in the first four begin their own game of shoving and pushing for dominance.

Up ahead, you can see the first turn coming up, the gigantic Mesas opening to allow a gap for a sharp left turn. Beyond that, in a straight line ahead of you, is a great big pile of stone, collapsed inwards from the walls of the canyon. You can guess that they blocked off the next part of the path with that. Though, the angle isn’t all that steep...

You take a glance over to Katherine, and you see that she’s figured that out too, and her frame is shifting slightly, ready to jump towards the wall. You’re not too sure how fast she’ll be climbing it, but it’ll definitely be faster than going the long way.

You grin as you watch Katherine prepare to drive right up the side of the barricade, and decide to follow her. Making sure that your Capsule flow is tuned properly, you push the accelerator all the way to the ground, and prepare yourself for a ride. You watch as the Revolutions per Minute climb higher and higher, going up to and PAST the fucking redline, the dashboard struggling to record the number next to the dial. Eventually it gives up and says that you’re somewhere over thirty thousand revolutions a minute.

Twenty four cylinders, over thirty thousand revolutions, with the power of a Capsule constantly running through it all.

You briefly attempt to regain your sanity, but it falls loose from your slip, and you start laughing as your frame rockets forward, wheels spinning without a regard for any ground underneath it. You accelerate past the old couple and Maverick, who both had slowed down for the turn, and soon come head to head with Katherine.

You can see her looking out her windows in surprise, and then rage, as you pass on by her, directing the biggest, most shit-eating grin that you possibly can at her.

Even as she attempts to catch up, her frame has already begun the conversion over to a legged mode, slowing itself down rather drastically in an attempt to catch herself on the wall.

You, of course, have no such compulsions, and find a decently slanted part of the barrier to drive up on.

And so you do, driving up the near vertical slope with barely a pause. Your eyes are going a bit cloudy with the extreme acceleration, especially with the turn up onto the slope, but soon enough you’re peering around as you get a good view of the situation.

You’re going fast, you conclude. You’re already halfway up the barrier, and you can only imagine Mr. Wow That’s Fast going comatose at seeing your performance right now. You briefly wonder if you could get Digs to get Mr. Wow That’s Fast to comment on your Redline performance, but that would probably be classified as torture in this sector.

The Morosa engines throb like a heart stuck with adrenalin, and the wheels of the frame play a beat against the side of the barrier, knocking down some rocks to the ground. And just ahead, you can see the top of the barrier, which seems to actually be paved pretty smoothly.

>Keep going right over the barrier and drop in front of everyone.
>Take a right, and head towards that mesa-jump. Maybe you might be able to make it from the mesa you’re already on.

The engines roar as you go over the edge of the barrier, going up for a solid five metres before slamming back down on top of it, skidding slightly. You try to peek out through the windows and you can just about make out Katherine still climbing the wall.

About half of the way up.

Looking along to where the rest of the racers are, they’re only halfway to the large bend that’ll bring them back, so Katherine’s definitely got the lead on them. You? Oh, you’re miles ahead.

But you’re not just going to stop there. You change back into first gear and start off again, driving along the top of the mesa while switching back up to sixth, reaching an even higher amount of RPMs on the flat surface. You can actually hear the roar of the crowd from where you are, and you can actually see where people are watching the race from.

As in, the mesa you’re racing on. But luckily, they know the rules about racing, and quickly get out of the way to let you go on. As you pass by, you can hear one speaker reporting on the events: “-AND THERE HE IS, RACING ALONG THE TOP OF THAT FIRST MESA! MAN, YOU’D EXPECT THEM TO BE COMPETING IN YELLOWLINE, WITH HOW THEY’RE FIGURING OUT WAYS TO GET AROUND THE-” It passes out of hearing distance pretty quickly, and you’re left with the last few kilometres to drive along. Soon enough, you come to the end of the mesa, and you can see everyone below you making the turn, with the old couple now in the lead and Maverick right on their tails.

Right before the end of the mesa, there’s a hill. Which you take advantage of, ramping off and into the air...

At six hundred metres a second.

The old couple and Maverick both look up in shock as the sonic boom hits them, and they just manage to see the back end of your frame slamming down onto the next mesa.

You slowly come to a halt, checking the map you have. From your estimates of everyone else’s speed (around four hundred to five hundred), you’re already ten minutes ahead of everyone else.

Alright, fuckers. Time to win this fucking race right now. You turn your car to face the next mesa, and begin driving. Soon enough you’re racing along the top of the mesa at a comfortable five hundred metres a second, and the speed’s rising by the second.

And just ahead of you, the next mesa waits. You grin, and keep going. “Heeere....I....”

---

”That fucking asshole,” Katherine mutters, feeling herself pressed back against the seat as she races along the top of the mesa, “thinking he can win this race.”

She sighs. Katherine had already wanted to race up the top of any barrier in her way to get that bonus speed (part of the reason she had stuck with her unconventional frame for this race), but now Mikoto was going ahead and doing it all in his patchwork-scarecrow of a frame. Who the hell puts two Morosa-Twelves in a car? WHAT COULD YOU POSSIBLY NEED TWO MOROSA-TWELVES FOR?

And it’s at that point Katherine crested the top of the second mesa, and watches...

---

“IT SEEMS THAT MIKOTO’S GOT THAT LEAD NOW, AN ESTIMATED TEN MINUTES AND FIFTEEN SECONDS AHEAD OF THE COMPETITION! AND BACK ON THE NORMAL TRACK, MAVERICK AND THE OLDIES ARE BATTLING IT OUT...”

Digs sighs, looking around the commentator tower. It seemed that no matter what, he was partnered with the worst commentator that the planet had to offer. First, Mr. Wow That’s Fast. Next, Mr. Shouty. You’re meant to save your shouting for something that matters, for the love of-

“Digs.” the awfully calm voice breaks Digs concentration, and he turns to the commentator next to him.

“Digs,” he says again, pointing towards the screen. “You’ve got to see this.”

---

From the comfort of her restaurant, your Mom watches on in awe, the customers ignored. “Well I’ll be damned,” she whistles.

---

Nahar chuckles, taking another sip from his can of beer as he watches. “Now that’s a racer.”

---

”GO!” You roar, pressing the button to unleash a full capsule into the engines.

For a moment, you feel more than you hear, the Morosa engines in your frame going beyond redlining as the almost pure concentration of the Capsule hits their cylinders, the fuel getting shoved out of the way while the starship fuel is consumed in an incandescent explosion.

And you go fast.

Very fast.

The speedometre records over eight hundred metres a second. From behind, you can hear a distant roar of a sonic boom. On your dashboard, the number of revs is rocketing up to fifty thousand RPM. Your butt is numb at this point, even the high quality chair springs installed in your frame doing nothing against this constant force.

And then it all comes to a finale, as you hit a slight upwards slant.

And you go flying. You lean back in your chair and grin as you watch the mesa fly away from behind you, the next one coming up pretty quickly. Soon enough, you’re sailing over it, only just beginning to come down. And even as the Mesa starts to slope itself, you finally hit the ground, rushing straight towards where the finish line waits.

All around you you can see absolutely insane spectators either kissing random people or tearing up tickets of whoever else they had bet on. You can see a few drones trying to snap some pictures of you, but only one manages to match the speed you’re going at.

You give it a wink, and then leave it behind in the dust.

And you take a breath, and let it out, just as you cross the finish line.

You manage to come to a halt after about two kilometres (hey, those breaks came in handy), and a whole bunch of people race up to you to get your opinion on things.

You push them away, and find the most reputable reporter.

"Well?" you ask.

"Uh..." he seems to have lost his nerve, but recovers it fast enough. "What...what was that?"

You grin and take the microphone that the reporter offers up. “My friends, this is the stunning work of one engineer called Rench, who helped me take Morosa to a point that is just ridiculously amazing. Enough to finish in...how much time?”

“Twenty two minutes thirty four seconds!” One of the reporters offer.

“Yep. Couldn’t have done it without those two. Actually, Rench? You out there, man? Come on out!”

You wait a moment, and soon enough a large dirt bike is roaring over to you, turning just short. Rench quickly hops on over and faces the camera. “Hi there, I’m Rench, the best engineer that you’re going to see this side of Nahar. If you need work done on any kind of engine from any year in any amount of time for any amount of money, I’m your guy. I’ll be opening my own workshop that you can find in the Dry Lake City,” he peers over to you and mutters, “probably gonna be Salt Lake City with what you’ve just pulled, Mikoto.”

You’re both swamped for about another twenty minutes, until the next racer comes along.

Katherine.

She jumps out of her frame is rockets past (no breaks) and dives into a roll, coming up in front of you.

And she glares. Really hard.

You laugh and put an arm around her, walking off. “Ladies and Gentlemen, the two best racers in the continent are going to be off for aw bit. I’ll see you around.”

Rench manages to chase off the journalists as you and Katherine make your escape.

She whispers to you, “I am so going to kill you in the World Cup.”

You grin. “Wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

I'm writing her as Tsundere, but mostly jokingly. You're not really seeing the more 'romantic' scenes. They're getting on perfectly well, and this is mostly a joke. Though, she is a good racer, you just had one hell of car. Maybe in the World Cup, she'll have something just as good, or better.

Either way, you know that two people can go through on every race, with exception of Redline (and you can always race in pairs, so maybe you can approach Katherine about that later)
>>

Honestly, I'm not a fan of tsundere's, especially in anime. It's over the top. I'm definitely writing Katherine as an extremely mild tsundere, and usually only about racing (switching from awe at the stunts you pull to being really fucking pissed off) and it's very reasonable her reactions. Writing about normal people, what a fucking faggot.
