Its not exactly the dramatic reveal of the century- Tanks have never been popular as a sport- something of a niche that occasionally managed to grab headlines. The high barriers to entry and often limited interest had kept the sport from really taking off.

You are Commander Russells of the M26E1 Pershing Heavy Tank “Black Jack” and while you enjoy your coke, you finally start putting things together. “You make engines... You make tracks... Gun barrels, ammunition...”

Boone, the scion of Lafayette Heavy Industries, sees the gears turning. “We hope to begin full production by next summer.” He says. “Initial production will be 76mm-armed M4A3s, T-34/76s, SU-85s, and Ausf. D Panthers. Between eight and twelve units of each a month.” He smiles as your eyes widen. “Within the next five years I hope to have a line-up of over a dozen tanks.”

You nearly dribble coke down your dress-shirt before you close your mouth. “How much?” You manage to yammer.

“We intend to sell the tanks themselves at-cost, so with the standard grants...” He considers a few moments. “Low end? Three-thousand for the SU-85, around nine for the Panther at the other end of the spectrum.”

>”How?”

>Ausf. D Panthers
Really? You could at least make them Ausf A, when the teething troubles had been taken care of (and with a much better cupola for the tank commander), or even go with the Ausf. G which was stream-lined for easier production. Why make it harder than necessary?
>>
>>41627999

Ah, I think I might've made a mistake then- I confused the D with the G. (Thought the D was the mass produced one...) Fuck it, we'll fix it in Post.
>>

>"Alright, where does Oorai fit into all of this?"

Also, I think I know what he's trying. Since tanking, according to him, has been declining in popularity, he wants to revitalize interest by expanding the kinds of tankery available to American audiences. From the "classic" one-on-one duels, to Japanese-style team matches, to European-style insanity, he wants to greatly expand the format in America. And so what if one of those styles suffers a downturn in popularity or looses fans to another style? What matters to Boone is that people are interested in tankery period.

His father's going along with this because if it works, Lafayette Heavy Industries is going to see a surge in profits from all the new business, even if he still sells stuff at-cost.
>>
>>41628201
European style is battalion-sized battles, right?
That might be interesting on the Great Plains or in cities.
>>
>>41628201
And he's starting with tanks that have multiple units derived from them, so expanding the catalogue is much simpler than figuring out an entire tank. You want a T-34-85? They just have to make the turret. Is a Jagdpanther more your style? Just shell out the money for the 88/71 cannon and ammunition. It's a stroke of brilliant entrepreneurship.
>>
>>41628312
I still want my doom turtle, but you're right. It's genius, especially if it catches on with high-schools.
>>
>>41628312
In addition, his father likely sees this meeting an a textbook low-risk high-reward maneuver. If it doesn't work, he's out maybe the cost of this dinner and all those plane tickets, which isn't that expensive when compared to what the company's profits must be. If it *works*, he's just expanded the market to a massive degree, and LHI is in a position to be the first to profit from it.

(Yfw Bob Semple battalion skirmishes)
>>
His full production, could it possibly cause an upturn in blue collar jobs in the U.S.

Politics at play?
>>
>>41628986
Oh for sure. A few towns over from me, we've got a GD plant that's basically the sole mass employer left in the city. They made about 20-ish Abrams tanks to avoid closing down despite the Pentagon making it very clear they're not interested in any more tanks. So now the Army's sitting on over two dozen brand-new Abrams that are most likely never going to se usage other than spare parts. It is ALL about the Jobs with politics. I would be very surprised if the kid's dad wasn't prepared to move into Detroit and reopen a bunch of the plants to make tanks with if his son's idea takes off.
>>
>>41628986
If so, it's a fantastic political move.

Manufacturing jobs are created
The barrier to entry for new teams is lowered
Existing teams have new blood to deal with
They also have a new source of spare parts
Museums no longer have to fight tank drivers for authentic hulls

Literally everyone wins. Except farmers I guess.
>>
>>41629242
Don't forget the military gets more people with an interest of continuing tank-related activities into adulthood.
>>
>>41629291
By the same token, (depending on how popular it gets) there's a potential increase in the number of people that have experience in maintaining heavy machinery.
>>
“Alright, so you're going to be making a lot of tanks...” You say, the shock of mass tank-production finally starting to drain out of you. “Where are you going to get tankers?” A problem straight out of WWII- doesn't matter how many tanks you can produce if you don't have enough trained tankers to run them.

“Well, currently there are more prospective tankers than there are tanks...” Boone says, pulling a tablet from the side of his wheelchair. “Tanks have always been a finite resource. But you're right- the sort of production I'm playing at will quickly begin to outstrip current demand.” He taps a few things into a web browser before sliding it across the table to you. “That's where you come in....”

You blink and spin the tablet around to see video of CNN's coverage of your fight against the Tiger II. “Tanking is getting attention right now. Your and Ooarai's fight is catching America's attention.” You see links to other articles- retrospectives of American and Japanese tanking, history of the Pershing and the Tiger II. “You came along at exactly the right time, Russells- a human face for America to attach to tanking. A hero to root for in a foreign land.”

>”You're taking a huge risk- where's the money?”

There's gotta be something more. If he cared so much about this strictly as a hobby he could bankroll our team and have a "personal" stake in Japanese tankery. Without gambling the companies bottom line.
>>
>>41629376
>>”You're going to put me on a publicity tour or something?”
>>41629376
Not entertaining the idea that we might lose. Not entertaining the idea that we might lose.
>>
>>41630343
But it's not really that much of a gamble. This guy is LOADED, and everything he's spent so far - getting plane tickets and invitations across the country, setting up this fancy get-together - is likely just a drop in the bucket as far as his personal finances go. If it doesn't work, then oh well, it's not like it's THAT much money compared to the salary of the owner of the company that's making spare parts for EVERYONE in the American tanking community. And he noted that demand STILL outstrips supply right now. Plus, he's picked tank designs to manufacture that have dozens of variants descended from them, which will greatly ease the difficulties of expanding their catalogue.

There's almost no downside here. The only possible snag in his plans - Oorai loosing the tournament - would simply reduce his dad's company's profits from "Scrooge McDuck swimming pool full of money" to merely "ridiculous".
>>
>>41631001
Also keep in mind that there's always international markets.

When one Japanese people can field anywhere between five and thirty tanks, plus spares, that's plenty of opportunity for expansion. Not to mention Europe.
>>
>>41631098
Oh yes indeed. Many of those tank designs they're manufacturing are in use all over the world in international tanking teams. Just as an example, Saunders would practically be beating down the door for spare parts for their Shermans, just so they can use the extra cash for other stuff (like getting even MORE Shermans, or other nifty US WWII vehicles that catch their eye).
>>
“So, what?” You say, “You're gonna stick me on a train? Cart me around the country Captain-American style to punch out people dressed like a Tiger II? So you can get kids involved in tanks?” You grin at the thought. “Do I get to design my own spandex costume?”

“No need for a costume- you're already on tour.” He says. “As long as you're over there fighting and winning like you have been, you're going to create a storyline- There'll be heroes, villians- hell, from what I've heard you even managed to pick up a rival.” He leans forward a bit in his chair. “Point is- you're creating a story that America is already fascinated with- You keep doing what you're doing and we can turn that fascination into a lasting sport industry...”

“And what if we lose?” You say. Its not something you usually like to think about, but Oorai is still a ragtag group of fresh tankers. You've got the only experienced crew on the team, and so far you and Miho have managed to make things work with what you've got, but you're still a hell of a long shot away from being champions.

“Nobody's going to fault you for that- what you've done so far is a miracle.” He shrugs. “I don't see you losing against Anzio, so that puts you in the quarterfinals at least- Even if Pravda or Black Forest ends your run, we can work with third place.”

“What, you aren't going to help us?” You say. “All this money at your disposal- Oorai could have the best of the best with your help... Panthers, Shermans, IS's...” Oorai doesn't exactly keep themselves to one nation of tanks- with enough money you could create a team from the best tanks of WWII...

“I thought about it, actually.” He says, tapping the plexiglass tabletop. “First, I think the largest part of your and Oorai's popularity, both in the America and Japan, is that you're the underdog- aside from your Pershing, they really don't have the powerhouses of the other schools. Its a compelling story that a ragtag bunch of tankers with hand-me-downs from a broke school is winning matches in such a huge tournement.”

You nod. “So then the rich financier comes in and spends millions so the team with the American crew wins...” You nod and look down. “Yeah, I can see how that might not work out. We go from underdogs to rich bullies.”

“Nobody's interested in someone who buys the tournement...” Boone confirms. “But there is a second reason, a bit less likely, but important nonetheless.” He looks you in the eye. “Don't take this the wrong way, but I think giving Miho a dream team of tanks could do more harm than good.”

I think I know what he means. If Miho has the best tanks, even if they're crewed by noobs, it gives the impression that the only thing that matters is the machine, and the status quo continues. Miho needs to win with these tanks to show that you can't just pay to win with expensive prototype heavies. Now, if we had a half-dozen Hellcats...

>>
>>41635971
I wish I didn't see what you did there.
>>
>>41636043
Actually, no.

Ever wonder why the "D" was before the A?

Because it was the ausf. d, lowercase.

The Germans used lowercase letters for preproduction variants, and uppercase for full production variants.

SInce the PAnthers at Kursk were preproduction models rushed into combat, they were the Ausf. d - but people had a bad habit of transliterating all German models into uppercase, so it people just assumed it was the Ausf. D, and that it being before the A was a case of "Oh those wacky Germans".

So Properly, the order goes Ausf. d, A, G, F - as is proper.

>>41636158
Yep. Another notorious case of this is the Panzer II - it had Ausf. a, b and c preproduction variants in service at the same time as it's Ausf. A, B, C and D production variants.

It leads to some *very* confusing reading of TO&Es in Poland and France, and has resulted in quite a few cases of people badly lowballing the number of Panzer IIs in a given unit due to bad transliteration and resulting assumptions of doubled reports and so on.

You grimace a bit, looking down. “Alright, maybe not an entire squad of tanks- what about sponsorship?” You say. “Nothing big and fancy- just parts, ammunition, maybe some money for upgrades and updates...”

“Russells- I'm rooting for you, but I'm not here to play kingmaker in Japanese tanking tournements...” He looks at you gravely. “I can't support every down-on-their-luck team and try to save tanking an as American institution. Which means, I can't publicly support Oorai.” He then grins and his eyes light up. “Privately, though... I can see what I can do...”

You smile. “Thanks, Boone.” Well, at least Anzu is getting what she wanted out of this trip.

You lean back, proud of your diplomatic accomplishment. “So, why the party?” You finally say. “It's gotta be a huge expense.” Airfair alone for this many people is probably a couple years of maintenance and ammo for Black Jack.

“A few reasons, Russells.” Boone says. “First, as I think you delicately put it, I'm a great fan of many of the people here- getting to meet the champions of the sport like you would almost be reason enough on my own.” He smiles. “It really is an honor so many of you did show up...”

“But what's the real reason?” You say, contemplating the nearly empty coke bottle.

“Communication.” He says simply, waiting for you too look up in for explanation before continuing. “You've got Japanese Senshado, Then you've got American Tank Dueling. And finally Europe's large-scale tank maneuvers. All three have stayed more or less segregated for decades.” You points across the table at you. “You're living proof of what can happen when we cross-pollinate between the three cultures.”

“Pravda's already got a Russian tanker...” You start.

“Belorussian, yes.” Boone corrects. “Totally different country.”

“Belorussian. Anyway- she's already talking to an old friend of mine.” You continue.

“Exactly! That's what I want! American Tank aces zebra-striping their barrels in Japan! I want Erika challenging people to American-style duels!” He grins broadly. “You're like a single grain of sugar dropped into supercooled water- a seemingly small disturbance creating massive change.” He pushes something on his tablet and a television screen on one of the walls comes to life with a feed of the festivities downstairs. “Communication is what is going to save this sport. Here and across the world.”
