Last Episode: You confronted Joy-In-Ruin and purified the Hubris within her. Her followers were thankful for her saving their lives, but bitter enough about the years of mind-controlled near-slavery that they exiled her from their group. Ruin then told you what she was able to learn from the Hubris. The event that caused the End was a massive, forced, joining of minds.

“Fascinating.” Voice says over the radio. Embers is driving, you’re talking, and Ruin is riding along. She said she was going to follow you two ‘At least until we get out of Swanmay and find anywhere else that’s stable.’ Right now, she’s sitting in the back seat, still in bloodstained clothes. “This was one of my theories…not the mind ‘touching’ specifically. But something that caused irreparable mental damage. Do you know anything else from your exposure?”

“Not really.” Ruin says. “I mean, I think I know things, but I don’t understand what they mean.”

“And Embers and Ashes have similar conditions.” Voice says. “That makes sense now. Excellent.”

“So, now that we know ‘what,’ do we know how or why it happened?” Emmy asks.

“I have no idea.” Ruin says.

“It doesn’t rule out the ‘Weapon that went wrong’ idea.” Voice says. “Although, now I have to admit it might have been the opposite of a weapon, and an experiment into mental uses of Expression that went horribly wrong. Although, it doesn’t explain the mass deaths of the Joy-In-Hearts. They died BEFORE the Event began. We’re still lacking data.”

“Turn here.” Ruin says. “There’s a squirrel hole in an old diner. My people…” She makes a sad sigh. “I mean, no one’s been around here for a while.”

“What?” Emmy asks.

“Hidden cache of salvage, for emergencies.” You say. Pytor and you had a couple of them around Genesis’ outskirts.

You drive down the road. Emmy then looks at the side view mirror on her side, and turns around. “Umm…what’s your name, Ruin? I mean your real name.”

“Lucy…maybe? It could also be Deborah…I think.” Ruin says. “Look my mind hasn’t exactly been my own for the past couple of years. I’m happy I can talk.”

“Alright, whatever.” Emmy says. “Did any of your people have cars?”

“No.” Ruin says.

The penny drops for the both of you. “Shit.” You say. “How far are they?”

“They haven’t gotten to this street yet. I think they don’t know how to turn their births or turn signals off.” Emmy says.

"It could just be other travelers." Ruin says.

"Our luck's not that good." You say.

> Keep going to the diner, you’re low on supplies for survival and fighting. Best to get loaded up, if you have to throw down.

You pull the car over so it's like the other cars in the road, kill the engine, and all three of you dive down under the seats.

From your vantage point, you see the lights of a car slowly grow brighter and hear the sound of a motor getting closer.

You all stay as still as possible.

She is not. Right now, you're all out of Regalia.

>>41609755
The car rolls on by without even slowing down. You can also hear the grinding of gears. Whomever is driving that thing, doesn't know how to drive a stick.

You all slowly peek your heads up and see the car. It's a familiar looking van. The same kind that Plath used to kidnap you and Emmy. It keeps on heading down the road, lurching and grinding at some points.

Also, for some reason, you can sense that there's Regalia present. Only, it's...different. It's not like yours, Embers', or even Ruin's. The feeling is hard to describe. Wax fruit is the best thing your mind can come up with.

"Do you guys sense that?" You ask, quietly.

"Kinda?" Emmy says.

"Yeah." Ruin says. "It's...it's what we were supposed to be. No taint, no corruption."

You shake your head. "Something's off though."

Ruin frowns. "I don't feel that. Are you sure?"

You nod. "Come on. Let's follow them."

You keep the lights off, and drive as slow as possible, keeping shadow distance, and following the lights. Pytor never taught you how to do this, but you've seen him do it enough to pick up a few things.

You're pretty sure that the van hasn't noticed you as you both travel along the roads. You even had time to briefly stop and pick up Ruin's supply cache.

"Since we're the only other car on the road, they're going to notice us, eventually." Emmy says. "Especially once we get out of the city, and we can't hide."

"Where are we going anyway?" You ask, Ruin.

"We're leaving Cygnus, and headed towards the Glassgrave." Ruin says.

"The what?" You and Emmy say at the same time.

"It's what we called it before the Hubris took full control." Ruin says. "It's a massive city, made out of crystal and glass. Spires and fountains, gardens, all that stuff that you think of when you think of a 'Perfect Future' city."

"It's still intact?" Emmy asks.

She nods. "Not even a broken window."

"And the catch...?" You say.

"Fallout everywhere." Ruin says. "Everything there has that rainbow sheen to it. Nothing human can survive in that."

"Except for us." Emmy says.

Ruin smirks. "Like I said..."

"Enough." You say. "So, that's Joy Home, then?"

Ruin nods. "Yes."

"Is that also where the University is?" You ask.

Ruin shrugs. "I guess. You've but a lot of faith in this Voice of yours."

"Don't...just don't." Emmy says. "Or else she gets sulky and starts eyeing your internal organs."

"Alright, so...what do we do when we hit open ground then?" Ruin asks.

You drive to the end of Cyngus' city limits and slowly make your way through the rest of Swanmay's ruins. The Hubris construction is good for keeping you hidden and out of the way, so you'll be able to keep hidden and still in the comfort of the car.

"Why do the Hubris like flashing lights and water?" Emmy asks.

"They're simple...water is water, and light is light. There's no conflict about them, at least not enough to cause the Hubris to go crazy." Ruin says.

After some time, you've reached the Joy Home border and the highways that lead to what Ruin says is the Glassgrave.

You kill the engine, and the three of you pile out and load up your packs with everything that you can carry (which is pretty much everything between the three of you), and you head out.

"So," Emmy sighs. "I suppose that I'll have to put Embers in charge once we get to the Glassgraves, huh?"

"I suppose." You say.

She sticks out her tongue. "What about you, Ruin?"

"Hmm?" She asks.

"Well...can you still, you know...poof!...Regalia and stuff?" Emmy asks.

Ruin nods. "Yes...I think so, at least."

"Can we see?" Emmy asks.

Ruin sighs. "There is Joy left in the Ruins."

Her regalia probably once was an elegant white, layered and giving off a vibe of healing and nurturing. Now it's dried blood brown, tattered and torn. Also, her skin forms small scabs of Hubris Pus, as it leaks out from where the larvae had burrowed in. At least she doesn't look like a mummy anymore.

"What...what can you do?" Emmy asks.

"Not. Heal." Ruin says. "May I please change back. The scabs itch."

Emmy nods, and Ruin changes back into her Maybe-Lucy state.

The three of you walk down the Highway, following the trail of the van.

So, it's actually not a bad march to the Glassgrave.

When you see it, it takes your breath away. Crystal spires, buildings of stained glass, and there's statues, fountains, and gardens. Even the billboards are fantastic, handmade, works of art. It's clean, shining, and you feel that you're standing at the point where human innovation, and creativity meet, fueled by the harnessed power of the Gods.

All of it is toxic.

The oily sheen of fallout residue is everywhere. Giving the whole place a rainbow luminescence. Probably the only way that this place could be made into more of a fairy tale setting.

The three of you have changed into your Regalia. Complaints about itches and unwanted personalities were set aside as the three of you very much would not like to die by wail of organ failure.

'Well, would you look at that.' Joy says in your mind.

It's the white van. It's smashed into a bank of magazine vendors.

The three of you carefully walk up to it. The van's back door is wide open and there's no one in sight.

"Van's smashed." Embers says, checking out the front of the car. "Plus the gears are horrifically stripped. I'm amazed this thing got as far as it did."

Vomit. Empty booze bottles. Empty pill bottles. And the lingering smell of substances that Genesis does its level best to control.

"Someone was having a bit of a party." Ruin says.

"And we missed it. We could have had a full bottle!" Embers says, shaking an empty gin bottle. "Instead of a cheerless death march over the highway. Are any of those pills left still good?"

Ruin drops the last three pills on the ground and trods on them with her heel. "Nope. Sorry."

"Ohhh, you are the WORST kind of person." Embers says. "Ashes, babe, come on....let me have SOME of the booze that's left!"

'Why do I get the feeling that Emmy's never had a drink in her life?' Joy says in your mind.

"Here's something better." Ruin says. She hands Emmy a small, single barrel shotgun. "Since you can't aim to save your life. Give me your pistol. I'll make better use of it."

The girls trade weapons.

Alright, so...from what you can tell...whomever was in this van. (Probably two people.) Were having a serious party, as they made their way here.

Then, they forgot that you have to be in your regalia in order to survive in fallout areas. They threw up, and crashed the car. Then they must have Manifested Joy and took off, trailing vomit and a little blood...in that direction.

That said, you don't exactly need to care about them. You can read the still intact street signs, and the University campus isn't too far from here. If you want to get there before it gets dark and the Critters come out to play, you should hoof it.

That said...leaving two unknown Joy-In-Hearts out there alone might bite you in the ass. They obviously came armed, in excess, if they left a shotgun and a box of shells behind.

The typical bits and bobs of debris, packing, beads and string that people leave behind when they're carrying too damn much.

You start to close in on the pair, as you see movement and hear people.

You're able to get up on the pair as they cross a plaza. They're a little surprised as their presence (and yours), activates some jumping fountains that they're walking across. One of the small bursts of water splashes up and gets one of them in the face. The girls are wiping themselves off and trying to keep their stuff from getting wet.

In the meantime, the three of you are hiding behind the large pillars in front of one the the buildings that surrounds the plaza.

You recognize these two. They're the Small Joys that jumped you back when you raided West Wind's compound. It's the girl with the Ribbons and the Mole girl.

They look a LOT different though. They're wearing regalia that looks WAY different than yours, Embers', and Ruin's. It's gauzy and layered, and bright white. Ribbons' has hers covered in deep red ribbons, and her hair has to have at least fifty bows it in. Also, her hair now reaches down to her ankles.

Mole Girl's regalia has gloves with silver dipped fingertips, and the shortest skirt you've ever seen. Silver slippers are on her feet, and she's wearing an actual tiara made of silver.

They're hard to hear over the fountains, and the echoes of the plaza distort all forms of sound. It looks like they're arguing over something, and they're pointing in different directions, then at signs, and then to a map that they're trying (and failing) to not get wet.

You form up your Ash Armor.

You can see Ribbons focusing on clearing the jam in her hand cannon, only one of her Ribbon guns fires, and Mole keeps up with her brick trick.

'Easy move, minimal expression, and plenty of ammo.' Joy says. 'Versus the overly flashy, but heavily effective of Ribbons...yeah. We're in deep shit. They were already good at fighting dirty, but someone's taught them how to Express themselves much better than you three!'
>>

However, Mole's other brick is going to pulp you unless you move, properly this time!

Alternately, some way to increase the area of effect of whatever Embers does without using too much energy of hers? Like a sort of napalm bomb or whatever happens with flammable gas.

The blade sticks into the ground and the world stops being a blur.

Also, that's when you realize that Ruin and Embers have grabbed you and force you to the ground.

You idly remember that they had been trying to stop you for a while, screaming and shaking you. Begging you to stop.

Ribbons had run away, screaming and crying, ages ago. The other two had let her go.

Mole is dead. Very very dead. You have put enough large lacerations in her that, in the ones that don't have vital organs hanging out of them, you can see into her chest cavity.

Also, you've never felt better, or healthier in your life.

Plus, part of you wishes Raymond was here...or that the other two girls leave you alone for a while...or maybe not. You're feeling good right now, if they're interested may-GHAAA!

'NO. We are NOT having those thoughts after we just did THAT to someone!' Joy snaps. 'Holy shit. I think...we may need professional help.' She says.

You just make a soft chuckle, and wipe the last remains of your own blood off of your face. Then you steady your breathing.

You put it away. With the rest.

You look away from mother's body, and you get to your feet. You go over to Mole's body and you lay her out. So that she's not dumped like a piece of meat. That's important. Pytor does that. It helps you understand what happened, and that it keeps you focused.

>>41619728
>We need to get to the University quickly.
Ribbons is probably going for help we can't waste time do what we came here for and get out.
>>
>>41619728
>> Let's find some place to hole up, for the evening.
Apologize for letting the worst of us out of the box.
>>
>>41619733
I'm guessing you have or have been in the military?

If so, this may not be the quest for you. Not insulting you, just concerned about your enjoyment of the quest.
>>
>>41619733
Embers talks a big game but this is one of the first times she's been outside of Genesis, and Ruins has had very little experience with the outside world as well particularly when she didn't have the hubris infection.
>>
>>41619723
>We basically mutilated the dead body and got a rush from doing it.

I wouldn't be phased if we went full WE NEED MORE ENEMIES! / most dangerous game this is every marine that has seen combat that I have met EVER, not one exception.

Hell that should be dangerous, this is some hardcore lets hug it out level of restraint.
>>
>>41619763
I...seriously think you might wanna leave the quest. Again, not trying to insult you or even degrade you. I just think you're applying psychological issues that don't apply to this fantasy game.
>>
>>41619763
Lips has had a lot of practice in self restraint with her mother. I mean ALot this is the first time ANY emotion has left her box of control, and it involved her being half dead in pain and on a magical high that make opium look weak.
>>
>>41619798
>Lips
Who?
>>
>>41619812
Lupa* autocorrect fucked it up.
>>
>>41619812
Lupa (us) I assume autocorrect
>>
>>41619798
>this is the first time ANY emotion has left her box of control
Didn't we straight up fuck a guy?

I mean if you want to say "to this point" then sure but i don't see ANY being accurate.
>>
>>41619831
Yeah but in the description Echo gave of it it was the most impersonal and casual sex possible. It wasn't really losing control so much as it was dealing with urges.
>>
>>41619831
Us fucking him had about as much emotional attachment as brushing our teeth. The point is we keep such a tight seal on our emotions we're effectively dead inside. Which is why all the other girls like ruin or angora are scared of us and know we're wrong In a horrible way.
>>
Query. Let's say Embers and Ruin decide to say 'no mas' and want to quit traveling with us. Are we going to force them to stay? Or kill them if they show themselves doing something to, in their eyes, protect themselves from risking our insanity- say hold us at gunpoint while they leave or tying us up?
>>
>>41619871
We'd ask them to not leave us but not press the issue, like with Pytor and the car.
>>
>>41619871
Nah, they can do what they want.
Seems kinda rude to kill them.
>>
>>41619842
Still though I don't see this being THAT big of a deal. We openly approached them and they tried to kill us without any provocation. These are enemy combatants we are talking about, not some collateral damage.

That being said, overkill does become useless (Confirming the kill is still useful however this clearly went past that) and we should have stayed focused.

We made a mistake, we should take steps to prevent it from happening again and could easily be a "Well fuck" stressful moment.

This isn't some "What kind of monster is crawling in my skin?" or like what >>41619871 said.
>>
In any case I think we can all agree that using ash knives more would be a good idea as it has a very high potential to do a lot of damage.

>>41619871
I'm not really worried about them holding us at gunpoint we can almost certainly outrun both of them due to the nature of our abilities. As for forcing them to stay we probably wouldn't it would be a liability to fight them or have them with us if they really didn't want to be. Undue risk and all that.
>>
>>41619831
Lupes is just plain fucked up
Mom was so horrible that Pyotr killing her and raising lupa was a good thing

Every watched the tv show dexter? same situation

>>41619871
We probably be alright with them leaving, we are emotional detached remember
>>
>>41619903
I think we have a non-crippling fear of abandonment and some signs of OCD.
>>
>>41619903
I was under the impression that we wanted to fix that, considering Joy-In-Civility.

Guess we don't give a shit that she was right?
>>
>>41619731
>>41619740
>>41619732
>>41619742

You sigh and walk away from Mole's body. "We should decide if we're going to go to the University or hole up someplace for the night."

Embers just gapes at you. Ruin blink, and then sighs and nods. "I agree." Ruin says. "I don't want to know what kind of creatures live out here."

"Seriously?" Embers says. "We're...after..."

Ruin glares and Embers and she quiets down. The pair of you head off in the direction of the university, with eyes towards any place that might be secure for the evening.

'It isn't like we haven't killed before.' You say to Joy.

'We know. Don't worry. We won't mention this again.' Joy sighs. 'They're never going to forgive us for this...the other Small Joys. Once Ribbons tells them what we've done.'

'I know.' You say, to Joy. 'But they attacked us first.'

'Somehow, I doubt that they care about that fact.' Joy says.

"Is it just me?" Embers says, out of the blue. "Or did Ashes look CRAZY sexy while she was doing that knife storm thing?"

"Uggh." You, Ruin, and Joy all groan at once.

END EPISODE 16
>>
>>41619898
I think it is mostly that we wen't far too much into overkill to the point that we entirely lost our awareness of anything other than pounding more knives into the person we had already killed and we aren't happy about how that mad us feel, there is a fine line between doing what needs to be done and killing for fun.
>>
>>41619931
>"Or did Ashes look CRAZY sexy

I really want to see how we react to this.
>>
>>41619948
>"Uggh."
apparently
>>
>>41619919
While I do, now isn't the time or place.

>>41619918
We do but it's less yandare and more letting those close to us like Pytor walk all over us.

>>41619931
Embers, really?
>>
>>41619938
Zoning out isn't killing for fun. Killing for fun would be if our reaction to messing up was "Fuck yeah! Lets do that again."

>>41619956
>yandare
Never meant to imply anything like that.

>>41619954
Misread it as just ruin and joy saying that.
>>
>>41619971
>Never meant to imply anything like that.
To clarify if somehow we wind up alone, I think we could manage as a lone wolf but would probably look for someone to latch onto as soon as we could.
>>
>>41619931
I will say I'm glad we get to delay the conversation with Emmy for quite some time due to the fact that we are in a very intense fallout zone.

>>41619971
>Killing for fun would be if our reaction to messing up was "Fuck yeah! Lets do that again."
I was interpreting
>You're DONE being a Doll, you have power now and you can OWN it.
as pretty much a desire to do more of that.
>>
>>41619971
We did actually enjoy it though. The options were embrace it, lock it away, or reject it.
>>
>>41619992
>as pretty much a desire to do more of that.
Yeah but that option didn't win.

As a side note, I am surprised the potential yuri confirmation didn't draw more attention.
>>
>>41619999
Having fun while killing and killing for fun are not the same.
>>
>>41620015
Lupa has so many issues that i dont think anons wants to aggravate the situation
>>
>>41619728

Can we touch her mind or communicate with her?
>>
>>41620015
Embers is only one half that body and a freaking child, in temperament and in mind that we'd not consider it. Plus she's a jobber. Besides Lupa likes the D.

>>41620035
The whole point of the accept it option was to keep killing for our own enjoyment. Basically become our mother.
>>
>>41619931Just got caught up to see the last post :(

So basically we should have ran away but we didn't want to since we were to proud, and wanted to beat them into submission.

This is why Pytor wants us gone.
>>
>>41620036
Lets not act like we are the Joker or Hannibal Lector.

>>41620061
>Besides Lupa likes the D.
That isn't exclusive,see >>41619632
>You're feeling good right now, if they're interested may-

How old is Embeers anyway, for that matter how old are we.
>>
>>41620079
If Pytor wanted us gone he's not be sticking his neck out trying to find and save us.

>>41620092
Emmy is15ish Lupa is older and a lot more experienced. Also remember the side considering it was the side she associates with her mother.
>>
>>41620079
>This is why Pytor wants us gone.
No Pytor was worried about getting attacked by cultists that are after us for being magical.
>>
>>41620039
No. Actually, that's a little weird.

There's a lot of little bits that are weird.

Mole and Ribbons working as a duo.
The crazy power jump that they had.
How they seemed to have...forgotten a few of their tactics when they were with the other three, and had small joy powers.
How they instantly attacked you, the second they saw you.
That weird feel you had around them. Also how their regalia looked so remarkably different than yours.

A bunch of little stuff that's out of place, but like Voice says. You're lacking data.
>>
>>41620106
>Emmy is15ish
Which is probably young adult by wasteland standards.
>>
>>41620127
So they were basically berserkers hoped up on combat drugs?
>>
>>41620130
Still a kid in the settlement she grew up in though. Embers is a spoiled brat and a child compared to just about any waste lander. While Emmy would be considered a naive child in mind if not body. Lupa isn't really interested.
>>
>>41620149
>Lupa isn't really interested.
Up till this thread you could have been correct saying that. We wanted to fuck right after killing before we came down.
>>
>>41620127
PoJ mi draped me and pumped me full of energy didn't they?
>>
>>41620162
I think we would have wanted to fuck anyone then, so that's not the norm.
>>
>>41620106
Maybe I worded that wrong, he doesn't really want Lupa gone but knows that she needs to go if he wants to live with less "threats" in his life or live longer. Pytor was talking about kicking her out earlier before being kidnapped.
>>
>>41620149
>Embers is a spoiled brat
Not really, she grew up in a command based society and has training. She is probably more disciplined then most wastelanders but not as hardened or experienced.
>>
>>41620162
Your point? What she was feeling was a euphoria tied to bloodlust, sadism and narcissism, which evokes thoughts of her mother in Lupa. Given my me touches are a thing it likely she literally has some of her mother in her. Especially since they were both would be joys. That wasn't Lupa.

>>41620177
Yes but that fell apart when he let us sell the car, and is now trying to find us. If he had wanted safety he'd have made us take the car and not bothered coming after us.
>>
>>41620195
That's Emmy you're talking about. Embers is much different and is a brat. Remember us having to kick the shit out of her to make her listen?
>>
>>41620207
My argument or Pytors reason for it?
>>
>>41620207
>narcissism
How do you figure.

>That wasn't Lupa.

Yes it was. People lie to themselves and other saying I wasn't myself when they are at their lowest, but we are responsible for all our actions.

>>41620216
Yeah, fair enough.
>>
>>41620230
Pytor's reasoning, it was mostly a kneejerk reaction to a big secret.

>>41620234
I'm saying it was literally a mental vestige of her crazy mother coming out of her. Remember when she turned away from her Mother's corpse here?>>41619728
Mind linking is a thing after all, and her mother was a prospective Joy.
>>
>>41620265
So your saying our dead mother possessed us?
>>
>>41620127
A little late, but thanks for running.
>>
>>41620265
I think it just reminded us of our dead mother and because of the whole thing we just hallucinated a bit. No mind touching or anything.
>>
>>41620270
Or some bit of her was strongly influencing us to the point of madness. Remember there is a reason mind touching is possibly lethal.

>>41620282
I hope so, but I'm not betting on it.
>>
>>41620127
Not fully understanding your post, your stating things that both seem to be in game and from our pov?

Let me try and break it down.

>No. Actually, that's a little weird.
Okay, so something in them is difference or changed that prevents it, or they way they died make sit impossible maybe?

>There's a lot of little bits that are weird.
?

>Mole and Ribbons working as a duo.
Seems they trained for this no doubt, but by themselves or by someone else, who knows.....

>How they instantly attacked you, the second they saw you.
The cultists may have got to them and they work for them but they are not infected in any way. So maybe they are instead with genesis?

>That weird feel you had around them. Also how their regalia looked so remarkably different than yours.
Lacking data

Can anyone else chip in?
>>
Kinda late but thanks for running Echo. Fun thread. Ash knives is fucking great and small joys a shit.
