You are Clarissa, a high-school student, Kimiko's Substitute Shinigami, violent murderer, and one of Karakura Town's spiritual protectors.

...This is complicated. You can't help but hesitate with your response.

"I... want to save Kimiko. But it's not like that guarantees danger, Ren." You begin, picking your words carefully. Your friend is upset with you, and you don't want to aggravate her any further. "I wasn't planning on doing anything crazy when I got there. Just... see her and figure something out. And then I'd return." You explain. You can't help but smile a bit at the prospect of 'seeing' her - you still don't even know what she looks like. Just imagining finally getting to meet Kimiko in person makes you feel stupidly tingly on the inside.

Maybe your smile looks more pitiful than you think - Ren casts her gaze downwards, her anger seemingly gone. The girl quietly mutters. "You weren't planning to, but you'd do it if you had to."

"...Even if things were to go bad, I'd handle it. I'm strong. I'm way too strong. I'm so strong that it's dangerous to be anywhere near me when I'm serious. So I can only use that strength when I'm on my own. When I'm trying to rescue her."

Ren raises her eyes a little, not high enough to meet yours. "If Hiyori brought you there, I doubt you'd have a way back. Not if you started a fight..."

"I'd figure something out," You tell her, but she's clearly unconvinced. "Ren... only I can save her. And it's just... something I need to do."

"Yeah... I get it!" She hisses out, her voice strained and frustrated, and covers her face with a hand. "If it makes you happier, you don't need to take us into consideration."

"I didn't mean it like that, Ren-..." You want to continue talking, but her tears catch you off-guard and you stutter, briefly forgetting what you wanted to say.

Ren turns away. "I'll go home. Please don't follow me." Without waiting for a response, she walks away with a brisk stride.

You go after her, but your other friend's voice stops you. Naoko calls you by your name, and you glare at her impatiently, waiting for her to continue talking. She holds her arm, her posture uneasy; you're expecting her to tell you not to chase after Ren, but the girl keeps her silence.

"What is it?" You urge her on. Ren is going farther and farther away the longer you stand around here.

"Maybe you should... let her calm down first?" Naoko finally mumbles it out. "I don't think she wants to talk to you right now."

"...What makes you say that?" You ask.

"Ren might say things she doesn't really mean." Naoko humbly lowers her eyes after her response.

"Yeah... maybe you're right. Let's go home. Nothing else we need to do tonight." You agree with her and the two of you quietly head down the street. "...We should make sure that she gets home safe, though."

"I'll call her when I get home." Naoko mutters.

"Thanks. I guess that's a good idea." You reply. The walk continues in silence; you thought you've gotten used to this sort of thing, at least when it comes to Naoko, but it's making you uncomfortable. After a while, you can't bear it anymore, and bluntly bring up your concerns. "Are you... also angry with me?"

She takes a while to respond, almost giving you the impression that she didn't hear you. "Yes. But you didn't go, so..."

Maybe she wanted to say that she's happy for that, but realized that it could be an insensitive thing to do. You're not at all happy that you've missed a chance to meet Kimiko, after all. But hopefully, you'll get another attempt soon, after discussing things with Urahara. You just need to keep an eye out on him trying to wiggle out of helping you, as Hiyori thought he might do.

After a pause, Naoko continues. "But you shouldn't mind me. I'll be sad without you around, but if you say that it'd be only temporary, then I believe you, and that's fine," She grabs her arm again, probably out of embarrassment. "If you'll be happy after you do it, then it's worth it."

You feel your face warm up a bit. The two of you reach an intersection; you are to split up here to get to your respective homes.

"Are you sleepy?" You ask without any particular reason, just to strike up a conversation.

"Not really. I've been having trouble sleeping lately." She says. You smile a bit. You can relate to that. You really can.

"If we're not gonna sleep anyway, let's practice the ribbon spirit-sensing technique till it's time for school." You suggest, and Naoko nods. "Maybe the park's a better place for it. It's not that far from here, I think. I hope you've got a phone on you, though, or it'll be troublesome to keep track of time."

She nods again and quietly follows after you as you lead the way. You've got a few hours before sunrise, and you might as well spend them on something useful rather than not-sleeping.

Naoko guides you through the process again to the best of her ability. Her instructions always come off as vague, and you can't determine if it's because she's poor at explaining how it works or if it all really is just so vague that this is the best she can give you. It could be a mixture of both, since Naoko isn't terrific at communication, and the technique isn't as straightforward as swinging a sword.

"Maybe it's... well..." Naoko desperately mumbles when you more or less give up. She probably thinks that it's her fault that you can't get it right. "It's not really... making ribbons and sensing through them. I guess it's more like... the opposite," She seems to be on to something here, judging from the rising enthusiasm in her voice, like she's approaching a genius conclusion. "You give shape to what you sense so that it can get more precise."

You make a bit of a face at her, as Naoko looks like she's got it figured out for herself all over again, but you're kind of confused. "So basically, I gotta learn how to sense things first? I mean, it's not like I haven't been trying to do that."

(1/2)
>>
>>41586624
"It's easier for me because of my cross. It gives me a 'guideline' for sensing spiritual power," She taps the silver cross dangling from her neck; it shimmers slightly. "But you should focus on learning how to sense it first, without concerning yourself with the ribbons. For starters... let's do something specific. Try to feel my spiritual power. I have a little more than you do - at least right now, when you're holding back - so it should be easy. I'll start using it, are you ready?"

Naoko slowly moves her hands around, pale blue wisps trailing her wrists. Those lights must be the spirit particles she uses to create her 'gear'. She's probably trying to make it easier on you by using her power.

You try to drill through her with your eyes, but it's clearly not doing anything; or, well, at least, you don't think it's doing anything. You don't really 'feel' anything different. Or maybe you are, and you just don't realize it. Naoko stops and hangs her head, an eye closed in thought. "I know. Close your eyes. Tell me when I stop doing it."

You get what she's trying to do. This'll make it much easier to tell whether you're doing the right thing or not. You close your eyes, and after a few seconds...

"...You stopped doing it." You open them. Naoko has a smile on her face - you assumed correctly. Her happy expression catches you off-guard, so you sheepishly turn away. "I think I get it now... thanks."

"It's nothing. I'm sure you would've gotten it eventually even without my help."

"...That's not what I meant," You continue; Naoko looks confused. "Thanks for... being my friend."

The girl's eyes widen a bit and she looks away. That was probably a bit too sudden. You feel your face quickly warming up after such a line, but you really wanted to tell her that. "I really do appreciate you sticking with me even though I'm... such a dickhead sometimes."

(2/3)
>>
>>41586641
"No you're not, Clarissa. You're a really good person." Naoko mumbles, and after a pause, suddenly looks alarmed, coming to a strange conclusion. "And I'm sure you'll make up with Ren, don't worry about that. You'll be back to being friends in no time, I'm sure."

"...I mean, I'm worried about that, but it doesn't have anything to do with this." You say, and she seems surprised to hear that. You hear her mutter a quiet 'oh'.

"Well... I'm the one who should be thankful for having you, Clarissa..."

Outwardly, she's holding pretty well, but you can tell that she's completely flustered. It's kind of cute so you want to keep looking at her, but it's also embarrassing, so you glance upwards. The sun's up, hidden behind thick clouds, illuminating the sky with a dull light. Going by the time on Naoko's phone, it's time to head home, at least if you don't want your family to find you missing from your bed.

After a little time spent cooling your heads, you decide to talk with Naoko a bit more. "Hey, Naoko... what do you really think about my plan to help Kimiko? I mean, the whole thing about going to Soul Society."

"I already told you what I think about it, Clarissa... don't worry about me. If you have to do it, I understand." She understands, but before, she did say that she'd be sad.

"...Do you think it'd work?" You ask. She hesitates with her response.

"I don't really know anything about Soul Society. I can't say. Sorry." You expected as much, honestly. To your surprise, though, she continues. Maybe Naoko wants to at least help you try to think. "It's the world of Shinigami, right? So, maybe if you managed to blend in... no, wait, I remember some of them having specific accessories that your uniform didn't have..."

Even so, maybe it's not impossible to blend in, as long as nobody knows about your existence as an anomaly, and as long as nobody's keeping an eye out for you. You're awfully remarkable to begin with, too, but...

"I think you're very strong, but... there are probably lots of Shinigami there." She continues. You thought your face has cooled off by now, but you think it's getting warm again. Wait, it's more important to focus on what she's saying. Basically, Naoko doesn't think that fighting your way through is possible, either.

You speak up. "Well... I guess I'd need to try a mix of both to pull it off."

"It's... very risky, Clarissa." The girl mutters. Even though she might not mean to, you think she's trying to discourage you, in hopes that you don't go. Or... maybe you're making that last part up completely.

"Let's forget about it for now. I'll be talking to Urahara, and maybe he has some more options available for me." You tell her, and she nods. The air seems to get less tense as that unpleasant subject gets dropped. Time is running short, but... eh, whatever. You want to spend a little more time here.

(1/2)
>>
>>41588156
"So, how are you getting along with Ren? ...Better than me, I hope?" You joke around, though that wasn't really a good one.

"She's... been friendly to me. I think Ren is a good person. I don't really know what she thinks about me, though..."

"Well, I think Ren likes you, too. She's got a bit of a bad temper sometimes, but don't hold it against her if she goes off on you for some reason. Just means you're on the way to becoming good friends," You laugh a bit. "Though... the stuff earlier wasn't a joke."

Naoko mutters something to the affirmative and goes quiet for a while. Rather than the usual, comfortable silence on her part, this one feels strained, as if she's hesitant to bring something up. "Ren... told me that she feels like she's responsible."

"For what? Ren's not responsible for anything."

"She thinks that... forgiving you was a mistake," As Naoko says that, your heart skips a beat. You know that you don't deserve any forgiveness, but... knowing something like this still manages to make you feel awful. "She thinks she should have gotten mad and scolded you instead of forgiving you. She believes that she just hurt you even more by forgiving you just like that. Ren thinks that... she couldn't forgive you for anything. That it wasn't her place to."

(2/3)
>>
>>41588179
Hmmm, surprisingly insightful. Bit late though!
>>
>>41588179
It's... a little hard to wrap your head around that. It's true, you were mad at them both for forgiving you so easily. You even dashed out of the room back then because you couldn't take it. There's no one else who you could tell about your crime, not in the entire world. There was no one who could, and at the end of it, no one who would punish you for it, and you really hated that. You got away scot free, and there was no way to repent. ...So maybe Ren is right. Maybe you really would feel better if she scolded you and berated you for what you did. You murdered an innocent girl, you hate yourself for that, but no one else does. It's almost like they don't even care about Aiko.

"I'm... sorry for bringing this up, Clarissa, but... what did Aiko say after she died?"

What Naoko must mean is that... the only one who has a right to forgive you is Aiko. You could hate her all you like for doing that, but you wouldn't be able to do anything about it. It's her right; she's the only person whose forgiveness you would have no choice but to accept.

Your throat feels sore. As you recall what happened to her, it feels like something is trying to claw its way out of your chest.

...

>"She didn't get to say anything. A Hollow killed her again soon after she died, and then she was gone."
>"She smiled, but... I think she was too confused by what was going on to react properly, and before she got to her senses... she died again."

It's tough, feel like Clarissa should mention the smile but it'd also be in character to withhold that info just to beat herself up some more. Oh well.
>"She smiled, but... I think she was too confused by what was going on to react properly, and before she got to her senses... she died again."
>>
>>41588219
>"...She smiled."
But maybe bring up just how lonely and introverted Aiko seems? While Clarissa seems like the opposite? Like in abusive relationships, people forgive the ones who hurt and use them all the time. And what we did was worse than just hitting her or making her feel bad. Even if we really are sorry, and she really did forgive us, do we still have a right to accept it?
>>
>>41588342
Like I don't know, I feel as if we can acknowledge based on her personality that she probably would forgive us, but whether that really means much or not is another question entirely.
>>
>>41588342
Well, a big issue with abusive relationships is the repetition and we dunno if Clarissa ever did anything before random murder. But the fact that we might have been one of the few people she connected with and therefore was more willing to forgive the most insane shit is still worth bringing up.
>>
>>41588219
>>41588342
Yeah I'll back something like that. She loved Clarissa, could she really fairly judge what Clarissa did?
>>
>>41588395
Well in the end it's all about whether Clarissa can forgive herself anyway, and I can't see that any time in the future. I mean she doesn't seem to remember any motive or reason or anything so she can't even make peace with being, I dunno, impulsively violent or whatever.
>>
>>41588448
>>41588398
Yeah, I mean, I guess what I'm trying to say is I just am not sure that
>What Naoko must mean is that... the only one who has a right to forgive you is Aiko. You could hate her all you like for doing that, but you wouldn't be able to do anything about it. It's her right; she's the only person whose forgiveness you would have no choice but to accept.

Is really true? If we were a lot more powerful than her, and really nice to her until we murdered her, and she had nothing else... I mean I don't know, maybe we shouldn't overthink it and just accept it without questioning it too deeply.
>>
>>41588497
Maybe killing Clay Bone would help, since he's the one who ate Aiko's soul? I'm pretty sure hollows still destroy the souls they eat, but still, couldn't hurt.
>>
>>41588531
Like it could just be a lie that Clarissa needs to believe in order to at least halt her slow self-destruction?
>>
>>41588586
Hmmm, yeah perhaps. What happened to Clay Bone anyway?
>>
I kind of feel like having Clarissa just break down and tell Naoko almost everyting, like how she can't sleep because some nightmare that looks like Aiko keeps killing her, how her inner world, a reflection of her soul, has crumbled into sand etc.

"...She smiled." You whisper quietly. "But... even if she... even if she forgave me, it might not be...-"

Naoko clutches your arm and huddles next to you. With her hug, she interrupts what you were trying to say - that even if Aiko forgives you, she might be wrong to do so.

"Don't... try to make up reasons, Clarissa. If she really meant to forgive you... then you'd just be squandering her last wish."

"Naoko... don't say something like that," You mumble through your tears. "It might not even mean that she forgave me... she didn't say it. It's not certain at all."

"Clarissa, please stop it. Please stop suffering. Please stop making up reasons to suffer. Aiko wouldn't... want you to be like that." Naoko's words mingle with sobs, her crying face buried into your shoulder.

It hurts even more when she says that. She's probably right. No, she's most certainly and without a doubt correct. And that... just makes it even more painful. It forces you to look for reasons behind her smile, and you do find something, even though you wish you didn't. It feels like whatever is trying to rip your chest open from the inside is about to succeed.

"...Did you know, Naoko? Aiko was... the only person who took me seriously when I told her that I could see ghosts. I thought she was just naive at first, but... no... she only said that she really wanted it to be the truth. She thought that it'd be great, because even if she died... even if we both died... we'd still be together.

So maybe... that's why she was smiling."

Of course, maybe that's just a convenient excuse and a delusion. Maybe she was just confused and afraid because she died a moment ago, and that's she was smiling in a panic. You're probably just grasping at straws, maybe even making things up as you're diving deeper into your delirium and insanity. But...

...But what if it's the other way around?

Thinking that way is like a breath of fresh air. You're still crying, wrapped in Naoko's arms and trying to tear apart your throat with your regretful and sorrowful screams, but you feel at an unsettling ease. It's all so stupid, but there's that tiny chance that it's the truth. ...It's been a while since you've felt something so sickeningly hopeful, and it's driving you mad. You're crying, but it doesn't feel bad. This is the first time you've felt at such an ease in too long of a time, and it feels too wonderful to accept. But there's no way to get rid of this sensation now, no matter what you try to do or make yourself believe.

Aiko lived... a happy life, right until the very end.

...

Eventually, you calm down; Naoko does as well. Wrapped in one another's arms like a pair of lovers, even though you're just really good friends. The sun has comfortably settled high up in the sky, though still concealed behind gray clouds.

"...Sorry, Naoko. You don't have time for breakfast because of me."

"...I don't mind. I'll buy food at school."

"I'll share my lunch with you. You did that for me before, too. Though, I won't force feed you."

You laugh a bit. Naoko smiles.

"Now that I know what Ren really thinks, I know what to do. I'll let her scold me all she likes." You chuckle again. You feel a bit sad again because the two of you have to split up and head to their homes after all, but... you'll be late to school if you actually do that, and Chappy must be obediently carrying out your orders and proceeding on with your life. So you can head there together.

When we go to SS, Clarissa might as well just prepare to change schools when she gets home. Her reputation will be in ruins.

Today, you had fun at school. You felt a strange lightness throughout the day, like you were about to float away at any given moment. Ren was visibly surprised to see your strange enthusiasm, and that seemed to improve hers and everyone else's moods. Unfortunately, you couldn't find an appropriate chance to apologize to her for what happened, but there'll always be another time.

As you mull over a particularly difficult bit of homework, you glance over at the corner of your desk, where a pair of black butterflies hover about. Hiyori thought you didn't have one when she gave you that extra, so now you have two. It's probably a useful tool to have on hand for whenever cellphones don't work, probably. You only wonder how to aim these butterflies at people other than Urahara.

You've been hesitant to send Urahara the message. You don't... really know why. You said it yourself - it doesn't necessarily has to involve violence, and yet you're more anxious over risking your life than ever before.

As for specifics, well, ask if you can have a face-to-face talk sometime reasonably soon. I figure we might as well hash things out that way, a lot more dynamic than hoping whatever questions we send give us the right answers.

You'd leave our friend to suffer, anons? Truly you make terrible Shinigami!

>Send Urahara the message. (Write-in optional for precise details).
Ask if there's any way we could get in contact with Kimiko. Failing that, any way we could arrange a visit to SS I guess. Though I sincerely doubt he'll reply favorably to either...but gotta give it a shot.

>Send Urahara the message. (Write-in optional for precise details).
I think asking to meet in person at his earliest convenience would work, also maybe ask if we could get a limiter like he has, in case something stronger than Hiyori turns up, but we don't want to make a bunch of people pass out again?
>>
>>41590950
I'm pretty sure she chose to go back. At this point it looks to me that we'd just end up destroying a lot of stuff she cares about (us incliduded) all to disregard her wishes.
>>
>>41590868
>Don't send Urahara a message
>>
>>41591017
Yeah, asking about safely using our powers would be very useful. Both for fighting and training.

>>41591042
What? The message outright said she was found by people serving her family and brought back. And we know her family's plan for her is the opposite of what she wanted out of her life. Do you even read the quest?
>>
>>41591042
It's hard to tell, she might have felt like she had to, but that doesn't mean that she wanted to.
>>
>>41590868
>Send Urahara the message. (Write-in optional for precise details).
If he is a busy guy, he probably won't reply immediately, which means we can work on making Paul believe in ghosts. Also I feel like we should try sleeping at some point, see how long this new good mood lasts.
>>
>>41591132
>which means we can work on making Paul believe in ghosts
But that's dangerous anon!
Good point on sleeping though. Even if I worry it'll give us another nightmare and consequently tank our mood again. Still, gotta try.
>>
>>41591156
Eh, leaving him be is also dangerous. And I don't know, I don't really trust this good mood.
>>
>>41591189
Yeah I guess. Slow and steady plan is still untested, so.
>>
>>41591077
She also seemed really hesitant to let us just throw our life away for her before she left. When she left it didn't seem like she was coming back to me and her being found by her family doesn't necessarily mean she didn't let them find her. I don't remember the exact wording but it didn't seem that conclusive to me.
>>
>>41591229
That's why, ideally, we don't storm in throwing swords everywhere, but instead stick to groups of weak shinigami, use our mind control powers, and attempt infiltration. Maybe ask Gilgamesh for advice on being stealthy.
>>
>>41591229
I don't find it very likely, and given it's the entire impetus of the plot right now I'm not seeing the benefit of 'eeeeh maybe my kinda-gf ISN'T suffering at the hand of her family for the forseeable future, peace out' here.

Closing voting and ending thread for tonight, it's getting really late!

I'd like to take a bit of a breather here and think things over, so let's continue next week! Watch out for the unexpected on twitter:

If you have any feedback or questions, shoot them my way!

Thanks for reading!

Thanks for running, I bet you're glad anons finally decided to let Clarissa begin healing, even if it was extremely reluctant.
>>
>>41591317
Thanks for running! It was fun.
>>
>>41591317
So what IS Naoko's family name, anyway?
>>
>>41591317
So who wants to be more motivated to kill Clay Bone, if Aiko really was in love with us enough that she'd be our ghost girlfriend, as madness-inducing as that would have been? Like not so much WHITE WHALE as trying to figure out what exactly his connection with Nobody was, and if there's any feasible way of getting a rematch.
>>
>>41591379
Well sure anon, but we don't really have any great ways to pursue it do we? As I said I can't even remember what exactly happened to it since it's been so long.
>>
>>41591335
Literally by a single thread did the dice roll over to that 4 and made it possible! ...Or something like that! It was a close call, is what I mean.

>>41591379
If Clay Bone was being controlled by Nobody, which is why Clay Bone made so many raids on Karakura despite running purely on instinct, then it's just about completely left to chance whether or not she'll emerge in Karakura Town again after Nobody's death.
>>
>>41591378
It's obviously either Ishida or Kurosaki. The real question is what Kimiko's last name is. Obvious answer is Kuchiki, but it could be Shihouin or maybe even Shiba!
yfw it's Omaeda

Don't joke about such things, anon.

...oh.

>that spoiler
There's something seriously wrong with that family.
>>
>>41591259
To me the entire impetus of the plot so far has been watching Clarissa grasp at straws as she slowly self destructs. It looks to me more a case of take our unhealthy obsession to its logical conclusion and blow up completely or try and move on like Gil and pretty much everyone else has told us to.

What's wrong?
>>
>>41591479
That doesn't mean Kimiko isn't also in trouble. I don't think it's worth taking the chance she's actually fine despite everything. Clarissa's implosion is a great character-arc, but the actual plot is clearly dealing with being thrust into the world of the Shinigami and dealing with that shit. I mean, given how closely it mirrors the manga's plot complete with the Shinigami being in trouble with their family and the MC wanting to bust them out, not to mention how much time and effort Mushroom has spent on Kimiko's story, it's less a plot hook and more a plot-trawler trying to scoop up as many anons as it can.

Part of me feels bad about getting rid of Captain Clown, but another part of me is glad that he didn't have a chance to do more experiments on us.

All of me is terrified of when he gets his shit together and decides it's time for revenge.
>>
>>41591574
Please continue to make decisions you think are best, and please don't regard the amount of time or effort I spend on anything as a deciding factor for the choices you vote for! I'm not trying to guilt trip you or anyone else into choosing specific options through the amount of effort I put into something.

Please always choose whatever you like. Your input and wishes take priority over what I had in mind.
>>

It's only a matter of time, anon.
Although technically he didn't know Clarissa had sold him out when he left, right? If we're reeeeally lucky it'll never come up!

What, you couldn't love this face?

But seriously, the one thing we know for sure is that Kimiko is bustier than Aiko.

>But seriously, the one thing we know for sure is that Kimiko is bustier than Aiko.
Did Aiko even have a notable bust?
>>
>>41591696
>Kimiko is bustier than Aiko
That's not much of an achievement.

Even if 1 is larger than 0, it's still just 1.
>>
>>41591722
Kimiko is an oppai-demon in my head Mushroom, and you'll never convince me otherwise!
>>
>>41591686
He's a smart guy, and I'm pretty sure he made a veiled threat when he left.
>>
>>41591738
Just assume I was being hypothetical! Maybe average in Soul Society is a lot bigger than in the human world.

>>41591686
Even though he may or may not know that Clarissa sold him out, there's still plenty of reasons for him to chase after her. Of course, nothing is guaranteed for the time being. He might not get the chance to pull anything off, after all. He simply doesn't have the resources to be as scary as he was in Soul Society.

Urahara, on the other hand, is way scarier than he was in the human world.
>>
>>41591794
>Urahara, on the other hand, is way scarier than he was in the human world.
Well that's reassuring.
>>
>>41591794
>Urahara, on the other hand, is way scarier than he was in the human world.
And that's really saying something, especially if Aizen really ISN'T standing in his way anymore.
