Your name is Thomas Cairn, and you have no clue what you jumped into. Your dad was a famous superhero known as The Red Rider, and he showed up dead in an alley about a year ago. When you were checking out a storage unit you inherited from him, everything changed. You gained his powers, a brain able to calculate faster than light, and an uncanny affinity for machinery.

Using your powers, you were easily able to get into the world's top engineering college, Central Cosmopolis Institute. You used this knowledge to make a booming tech business. However, you never moved past Dad's ideas, and you couldn't stand the gap The Red Rider made, so you filled it. You made a suit of power-armor and became The Red Knight, however, you lacked experience. So you managed to get a mentor, Wrench, so that you could learn the Hero business. Of course the only way to learn is experience, so you spent a good portion of your free time breaking up Mafia operations around Cosmopolis.

The people have taken a shine to you. They were scared about The Red Rider's "hiatus", but now that you're here they think that, like other normal Supers, he passed on the torch. The crowds love you, every time you fly by at least 20 phones come out, but no good comes without a price, and not everybody can be saved.

The closing remarks are given by the same boring person who gave the opening speech, really, you have trouble staying awake. Something about the march of progress and the American Spirit or something like that. Half the people in the crowd look ready to go as soon as this is over. Your mind keeps wandering back to Monica, to the gun, to that entire situation. It was the first time you felt helpless since putting on the suit, you can't help but ball up your fist a bit. But, you have to learn to let things go, there was nothing you could do.

The speech wraps up pretty quickly, even the most innocent bystander knew it was getting ridiculous, and all the booths and showcases all start packing up. You could probably catch Fibin if you wanted, but he seems like a go-getter, probably a good idea to give it a few days. Who knows, he might make something interesting in that time. He seems like a pretty talented guy if he can essentially program a random yet appealing change into art, and he seems to think outside the box, considering none of the parts on the machine were manufactured for their purpose.

Then there's that business with Monica, should you really risk people figuring out your secret? If you "send" The Red Knight to help her she might catch on. On the other hand, letting her suffer probably isn't the nicest thing to do. If only this were the simple days, when you only had to worry about finding Professor Brend and figuring out who Mr. Salvos is. Now things are getting complex, you have a business to run, Menace is still free, you crippled a guy, wizards stole aforementioned guy, and you almost blew up the city.

Time to work on this.

>Timeskip is happening, as I believe college time has lost its luster. Fast-forward two years later after this part.

There will be a few choices to make after this scene, but first choice.

I might not be here for long, so a few points I'd like to make. Firstly, I want to be the Edna Mode for people, making super suits n shit. Her lab in the movie is something we can replicate and then some. Secondly, we need a bigger, more open lab. Spend maybe 100-200k buying a building and outfitting it with all the bells and whistles. A place we might be able to give prospective investors a tour of. Thirdly, Fibin needs a super name as Superhero Tech Support. I'm thinking Sequence. (A play on his name, Fibin Acci, but also alludes heavily to his AI and possible cryptological expertise) Lastly, I want to eventually come out to the UAU about who we are. They will find out eventually, and it'd be better to do it sooner, rather than later.

You decide that talking about the Monica thing with Jeanna would be preferable sooner than later, so you take her out to dinner and chat about it. You've been thinking about a way to make it seem less suspicious to do this, and you think you have this.

"So, about contacting The Red Knight..." You make sure to be quiet in case somebody's listening.

"Yes, how do you think it will go, she really needs some kind of help."

"I don't have a direct line to him, and I like to keep things rather confidential, he's rather paranoid. I could probably get a message to him, but it might take time. I can't guarantee anything though, I'm sorry." This is where the ruse comes in.

"Okay, if he responds, just tell me where he wants to meet."

"He always has one meeting spot, it's the rooftop of Uncle Wong's at 17th. If he's gonna meet her, you're gonna meet there." The location coincides with the known area of The Red Knight's "territory" so it should check out for authenticity.

'Thank you Tom, she really needs this." She gives you a kiss and the dinner goes as normal. If your plan is correct, the second Monica gets the news, she'll wait at Uncle Wong's. You'll meet her tomorrow night as The Red Knight.

As the night and day drag on, you get your normal dinner at Uncle Wong's for a night of tinkering until midnight. RON gets a read of somebody on the roof and you know the plan worked. You smile as you walk home with the Kung Pao Chicken, now all that remains is to make your entrance later.

Some of the improvements you made to the Jet Boots should help with precision maneuvers, so stealth is probably the best option right now. You said that The Red Knight was paranoid, so this should fit that story. You suit up and set your voice modulator, then you fly out through the concealed hatch into the darkness of night.

You fly the route to Uncle Wong's in a high altitude, that way you can make a drop to get right behind her, hopefully surprising her. This'll look so cool, you're like a regular man of mystery, you ooze subtlety. Wait, no you're in a red suit, not exactly subtle, but you can do stealth well enough.

You get right above Uncle Wong's and spot her on a chair facing the door to the roof, almost like she expects you to walk. Something must be wrong with her, that's a really dumb idea. You suddenly deactivate your jets and plummet straight down, you make not a single sound as you rapidly approach the roof. At the last second, your Jet Boots activate and break your fall, bringing you down with utter silence.

"I heard you needed to talk to me." The voice modulator changes your voice to a low, baritone pitch. She turns around, startled, and quickly regains her composure. Her normally calm demeanor is replaced with a fidgeting mess of emotions.

"I need to know, why didn't you stop him? I can't talk to Harry anymore, he won't answer. Why didn't you stop Harry?"

>"I couldn't, I'm a human under this suit, just like you."

"My attention was on the man. When the gun left his hands, I stopped paying attention to it...I made a mistake. I didn't see he had the gun until he had pulled the trigger." You can't say you knew it would happen, you were helpless.

"Thank you, I kept asking myself, over and over, if you knew about it and let it happen. It ate me up inside, I didn't know if you could have stopped it. I worry about Harry, he doesn't return my calls, his parents took him home and that's the last I saw or heard from him." She seems to start crying, this obviously has been something she's thought about for a while.

"I tried my best to do the right thing, I did, but I couldn't help, I'm sorry." She nods and walks through the door, shutting it behind her.

It makes sense, Harry was really broken up about what he did the last time you saw him, he probably doesn't want to talk to anyone right now. You have to get past this, it's in the past, learn from it and move on. It happened, don't let it happen again. You fly back to the lab and fall into slumber.

For the Expos, every year we create a big pile of high-tech scrap and let prospective geniuses spend however many days they want building whatever they want with it. At the end of the Expo, the inventions are gone through and judged on Presentation, Innovation, Complexity, and Innovation. Call it 'The Junkyard Competition.' Grand Prize is a place on our personal research time, Second Place gets a free package of nano-actuators (latest Model), a laptop with proprietary design (slightly downgraded Hyper-Processor) and a free ride to a college of their choice, and last place just gets the free ride.

It's been 3 years since your dad was killed, if you didn't love your dad you might have called it a blessing. Your intellect has given you fame and fortune, you are quickly approaching billionaire status, Cairn Industries has become a household name. Your invention and integration of wireless power has changed the world and has begun affecting design, as outlets are slowly being phased out of construction. Your innovations have made the world a better place, Cairnsium has completely eliminated all other forms of power production on a city-level. To compensate for this, almost everything is made of plastic now, as oil is now a common resource.

You decided after meeting Fibin that you need more great minds to run your business, so you set up "The Junkyard Competition", a now highly reputable competition recognized nationwide as a prestigious honor. This surge in popularity meant that many people wanted to work for you, so you built a factory to hire them and a Research Lab to work with your hand-picked assistants. Fibin is definitely one of which, he programs most of the devices, even to you he does an impressive job. The others are comprised of top new inventors and designers, two of which are winners of the Junkyard Competition.

With the rise of your legitimate Research Lab, you turn your Dad's Lab into a "Super Shop" for Heroes to buy gadgets and commission new gear. It makes a lot of money, and you can use it as a hideout, as it is only known to freelance heroes so far. Nobody has pieced together your ancestry or identity yet. You've been using The Red Knight suit to fight the Villains of Cosmopolis, and it's obvious that they are starting to form alliances. You have made a few enemies, but they always fell to your superior skill.

Grandpa's getting pretty old, he's 106 as of last month, so it might be a good time to see him. He always likes it when you call him to talk about stuff, it kind of feels like talking to somebody who thinks like you, each making leaps of logic and coming up with ideas. Luckily, this time you don't have to take a beat-up car on a road trip. When you're one of the city's richest men, you can afford transportation, like a jet with VTOL capabilities. Takes an hour to reach Comet City on a bad day. You decide to call Jeanna and invite her, but she says she has classes to go to. Sometimes you forget that not everyone graduates as early as you.

You hop in and signal the pilot where to go, you ascend into the sky and the jet rockets forward. The ride is normally pretty comfy, let's face it, you like high-quality stuff. The landscape blurs below you, making the world feel like a watercolor painting in a washer, a beautiful painting of chaos. The jet eventually makes it to the mansion and descends to the pad Grandpa has, he got it installed when he heard about your success. The door opens with a mechanical buzz and you step out to be greeted by Grandpa.

"Hello Thomas, so nice to see you! I guess you were expecting me to be in a wheelchair or something?"

"No Grandpa, though I'm confused as to why you aren't."

"A story for a later date, right now I have guests! You remember Francis, and he brought his son, George."

Did he just say The Pied Piper was here?

>Gene therapy loses
Why do anons want kids with cancer to die?
>>
>>41569503
Anon Gene therapy does fuck all to cancer. It's for things like Systic fibrosis. Cancer is a naturally occurring thing.
>>
>>41569523
But it's an essential marker for curing cancer. We can't cure cancer without it.
>>
>>41569503
Gene therapy opens a whole nother can of worms.

We should invest in mass indoor/underground food farms before we cure big epidemic diseases.

>>41569523
Depends on the cancer, some can be cured via gene therapy. e.g. leukemia.

Cars and Nanolimb it is

>You have one Plot Point, these are given out when Thomas completes a goal. They can be spent for perks.

>Pym Power: Break-Downs are more catastrophic, but gain a plus 10 to Innovation (but not Instability). Makes nigh-impossible inventions possible.

>I've studied all your moves!: Grants a plus 10 to all rolls opposing any opponent that you have seen fight before. (regardless of mind-altering effects)

>Paperclips and Superglue: Gives the new action "Slap it together", which allows the creation of one-use inventions within the timespan of 1d100 seconds.

>AHAHAHAHA: Instability has a permanent plus 5, but Innovation gets a plus 10.

>Oh I get it now!: Convert one Plot Point to 3 Tech Points.

>Self-improvement: Choose a stat to give a plus 5 to.

>I ain't gotta explain shit: Permanently gain 10 Instability (but not Innovation) to increase Tech Points gained per thread by one.

>Madness Mode: When working Science in Madness Mode, the result roll for what you make has the critical success chance raised by 10. May make Thomas less coherent in the lab. May also cause weird outcomes to Tinkering.

>I always have a plan: People and Heroes look to you for leadership, orders you make in a crisis take priority.

>Danger Zone: +10 to aerial combat rolls or flight maneuvering, +5 to wearing sunglasses, increases effect of Alcohol

>I am a man of Science. +10 bonus whenever dealing with something magical... unless it's meant to help magic. Then take -10.

>Timebomb: Can now delay a breakdown for up to a day, so it goes off at a more appropriate time. Requires a Guts Check, but not as hard as normal.

>Tech we don't understand yet: Makes Magitech a valid research option at the cost of two Plot Points (0/2)

I simply feel Nano-limb makes the most sense considering our research lab currently focused on nanotech, and we have nothing to use with our synthetic nerves.

Interesting.

>Just breathe...: So long as you are not in a crisis, you have +15 to Guts.

>Schmooze: You can now gather investors and supporters with almost no effort. Business Tree is greatly improved at the cost of personal time.

>BEHOLD!: Grants +10 to all rolls after any dramatic entrance, smashing a wall makes it +20.

>I'm not an amateur: Grants +15 to all rolls while in suit, but may increase your ego and need to show off.

Instability is the percentile chance that you will break down, while Innovation is the percentile chance that you will unlock a new tree in the process of a breakdown.

Screw Armor for now.

>Issue 16 is over! Twitter is @xLostcowboyx, don't know when next thread will be right now, but I announce on Twitter.

>Post-Thread Question: What is your favorite kind of Supervillain? Mine is hunters, like Kraven.
>>
>>41569817
mine would be masterminds like Dr.Doom and Redskull
>>
>>41569817
The 'Realistic View of Humanity' Villain. Like Red Hood, that fucker was awesome.
>>
>>41569817
My favorite vilians are the ones you don't think are. They could stand right in front of you with you not really noticing them until they go big bad. Which makes menace really fun in my opinion.
>>
>>41569817
question whens our Nobel peace prize we did just end the energy crisis.
>>
>>41569884
Menace is very similar to Creeper from HMQ, but I never intended to do that, I simply took the second highest-voted option in the Thread One Shitstorm and made it a villain.

I know I was there didn't post I don't think. But yeah I really like the mental villians more than anyone go has an explosive power. The strategist is king. Gargoyles Xanatos is in my top five villians. Dude always has a backup to his backups backup.

Have we gotten any mean letters from other tech-based superheroes bitching about us winning all our awards for shit they coulda made just as easily?

not really Creeper has been confirmed to not show on camera at all if he dosent want to while i believe Mance can still be seen on camera or some form of device.

or am i wrong?

All of the Nanotech tree

...yes, but what does that entail?

Can we make complex machines using nanotech, now?

Also, when are we gonna be warding off the UAU about them wanting our 'Off-the-Market' line of tech? The stuff we don't sell, like plasma weapons.
>>
Did we unlock nano cloth with that focus? It's armor tree, technically, but it seems suitable.
>>
>>41570979
No, I made the decision that bonding them together in a way that adds protection is less suitable for the Nanotech tree, as the nanomachines are merely components, not the actual practice. HARD Bots are pretty close though.
>>
>>41571145
So lost, tell it true, just what is the standard reaction the first time we show a new kid to the research lab? Also, what were the last two inventions to win?
