Hey everyone, time for some more Mercs. Since we’ve hit what I consider to be roughly the end of the first arc, I’ve given you a second fate point. Again, don’t expect them to fall out of the trees, but you do have a slight cushion. Probably going to have a decent amount of character development and maybe some world building before we get more action, there’s been quite a bit lately. Other than that, thanks for reading and I’m always open to discuss things and answer question.

>Fate Point: 2
>Money: $285
>Equipment: Tier 2 Assault Rifle. Tier 2 Armor (+4 wounds). Tier 1 Pistol. Standard Ammo: 3. Tier 1 Knife. Tier 1 Bandolier. (Carry Capacity, 1 Ammo, 1 Misc) Tier 1 Rucksack. (Carry Capacity 4.) Quality Lighter. Tier 1 Med-kit. Tier 2 Med-kit. Tier 1 Toolkit.

Your name is William, though many people call you Billy. You blink your eyes as you awake on your bed, late morning sunlight shining through your window. Yesterday was the attack on Fort Riley, which was successfully repelled thanks to the combined efforts of MMS, the local garrison and the hastily assembled militia formed from the residents.
>>
>>41549968
Though you were attacked by a force of nearly two hundred men, your own forces were nearly a match in numbers if not quality. They were also expecting a stunned and sleeping garrison and an unorganized town. Thanks to your ambush of the leading attackers you were able to kill or incapacitate over half of the enemy force before they retreated back into the night. Your own casualties were relatively light, with only about twenty dead and a similar number of wounded, most of whom are expected to survive.

After all of the excitement from the battle and your later activities you were so exhausted last night that when you got home you simply collapsed on your bed in dirty clothes. As you place your feet on the ground and move to your bed to change your clothes you try to remember what exactly you did last night.

>You helped Dr. Smith and the army medics with the wounded.
>You helped deal with the bodies and looted what you could.
>You went to Doc’s with everyone and tried to drink until you couldn’t stand.

You helped Dr. Smith and the army medics with the wounded, how could you forget that? Looking down at your clothes, you can still see some of the blood spatter and other liquids that soaked you while you struggled to keep militia members and garrison troopers alive. While you weren’t always directly involved in the operations that kept them alive, you were involved in nearly everything else.

You managed to make it back to the main battle area in time for Doc Smith to have taken over and start directing what you later learned was called “triage”. You helped with that, mostly taking the only barely hurt people off to the side while Doc Smith and the two medics attached to the garrison sorted through those whom they thought they could save and those they thought were going to die. It was a little strange for you really, watching the coordinated efforts of much of the militia as they moved around bodies trying to find wounded, not to simply put them out of their misery, but so they could bring them to the Dr. to try and save them.

After the triage you were assigned to treat those with only small wounds, mostly in non-vital areas where you could just bandage and disinfect wounds that the bullet had passed through. Finally after those with the light wounds were taken care of you helped with the surgeries, mostly handing items to Doc Smith and the medics as they worked in the insides of those severely hurt men and women. You watched three people die on the operating table, one while you held a clamp on their artery. On the other hand, you helped save the life of seven others, most of whom Doc Smith was confident would eventually recover fully.

It was strange, seeing how close life and death could be. But in the end…you think it was the right choice to learn how to help people.

Finishing getting dressed you grab your clothes so they can be washed. The scent of sweat, cordite, blood and death hangs on them, so there is no point in trying to wear them again. Checking the rest of the hallway you find that the other doors are still shut, most likely meaning everyone else is still asleep.

Going downstairs you head out back and quickly wash your clothes in the cold water pumped from the ground before hanging them up on the wash line. Going back inside you find that even Mary still seems to be asleep, with nothing being cooked downstairs. You decide to…

You decide that you should go check on Morrigan. She was the only one in MMS who really got hurt last night. As you suspected Mary hadn’t gotten hurt at all, simply having been covered in the blood of the attackers. Sarah had gotten a bit cut up when they had found her building, but she’d mostly only been scratched up. She’d already treated her herself by the time you’d gotten back and you’d seen no point in trying to poke at her when she looked fine.

Heading up the stairs you make your way back to Morrigan’s room. Knocking on the door you get a rough grumble that you interpret as being ok to come in. Opening the door you get your second good look at Morrigan’s room, which is still covered in a variety of clothes and assorted detritus that you aren’t really sure has changed since the last time. Morrigan is on her bed, her eyes still closed as you approach.

“Whayya want Billy…” she grumbles as you as you kneel down next to her bed.

“I was checking on your shoulder…” you say in reply.

“My shoulder’s fine,” she grumbles, though she turns gingerly over from her stomach to her back so you can get a good look at it.

It is clear to you at first glance that Morrigan’s shoulder is most definitely not fine. Though her vest wasn’t penetrated, the bullet had still hit nearly full on and transferred to her shoulder. The joint is a mass of swollen purplish skin, some of the edges already turning yellow. As you gingerly touch it, Morrigan hisses in pain and you quickly withdraw your hand.
>>
>>41551856
“I don’t think you’re ok,” you say simply, looking up at Morrigan as she leans against her pillows.

“No shit Billy,” she says somewhat fiercely, though she softens a bit as you pull away. “Sorry,” she says, “You’re right, it hurts like a motherfucker. I’ve had worse though.” Using her other hand she pulls up the bottom of her undershirt slightly, showing you a patch of puckered skin where she was apparently shot at one point or another.

You examine it closely, looking up at her in question.

“Back when I was in the army,” she says, “Got enough morphine so it wasn’t terrible, but when it wore off…” she shudders.

Looking back at her wound you then look back up to her swollen shoulder. You can’t do anything about her getting shot before, but you can treat her nasty bruise, at least a little bit.

“Can I help?” you ask, pointing at her shoulder.

Morrigan looks at the nasty swelling and then back to you before letting out a sigh. “I’m not sure what you can do for that Billy, but if you’ve learned something in that book of yours give it a shot.”

You nod, standing up to go get what you need. “I’ll be back,” you say.

“I’ll be here,” grumbles Morrigan.
>>
>>41553381
As you head back down the stairs you find Mary in the kitchen getting breakfast started.

“Will,” she says happily, “What are you up to?”

“I’m helping Morrigan with her shoulder,” you say, stopping so Mary can talk to you.

“It’s not too bad is it?” she asks.

“I don’t think so,” you reply.

“Are you going to be up there long?”

You nod yes.

“Alright, I’ll bring up some breakfast for the two of you,” says Mary, “Go do what you need to do.”

You nod, heading out back once more to get a bucket of cold water. Doctor Smith said ice was the best thing for treating bruises, but there’s not any ice in Fort Riley as far as you know, at least not enough that you could get some. But cold water is better than nothing and you’ve got plenty of that, along with towel.

You head back upstairs with your bucket of water, making sure not to slosh any of it on the stairs. Making it back to Morrigan’s room you find her in much the same position as before, though she sat herself a little more upright. Seeing you with the bucket she raises an eyebrow.

“What’s that?” she asks.

“Water,” you say, taking the towel and dunking it in the water, then laying it on her shoulder gently as she hisses, “It’s cold.”

“I can tell,” she says, as she winces a little bit, “I thought you were supposed to use ice.”

“Don’t have any,” you say, “Water is cold though.”

“Yeah,” says Morrigan, “It doesn’t stay that way for long though.”

You nod, reaching up to take the towel and dunk it back in the water so it cools down again before you put it back on her shoulder. Morrigan looks at you and squints as you wait the requisite time and then do it again.
>>
>>41553399
“So are you going to do this all day or what?” she asks.

“No,” you say, “fifteen minutes an hour.”

“You’re serious about this aren’t you?” she says.

“Helps,” you say, “I like to help.”

“I know Billy,” Morrigan says with a sigh, “I know.”

You continue to cool her shoulder for several more minutes in silence before she breaks it again.

“Alright Billy,” she says, “I can’t do this, talk to me, ask me a question or something.”

You look up from where you’re dunking the towel once more and start to think.

“What was the army like?” you finally ask as you lay the towel on her shoulder.

“The army?” she says, “The army was a pain in my ass. You remember the story I told you before, about the girl and killing those men?”

You nod, now listening to her as best you can while keeping track of where you are.

“Well afterwards I managed to find people again and figure out what was going on, I went and joined up with the army so I could fight back against those fuckers. Normally I wouldn’t of even got in, but things were crazy. So they let me fight because I was a mean, hardcore bitch. But I never did get along with stupid officers and after a while they didn’t want to let me fight anymore, things were calming down a bit. So I got out and started doing mercenary work for whoever would take me. Eventually I found Nem, Cath and Mary and well…” she waves her free hand vaguely at the building, “Here we are now.”

You nod, as you take the towel off her shoulder once more.

>Ask her why they didn’t want her to fight.

“Why did you want to do mercenary stuff?” you ask her as you continue your treatment.

Morrigan leans back a little more, at least she tries to, and looks up at the ceiling.

“I don’t know Billy,” she says, “it sure wasn’t on my list of things to do when I grew up though, that’s for sure.”

She stops talking for a bit as you wait patiently, she seems like she’s thinking about something.

“If anything…if anything it was because I didn’t know what else to do,” she finally say, “I’d spent three years in the army being the most ruthless hardcore fighter I could be just so they’d let me stay on the front lines. Originally it was because of well…you know. But after that it was just what I was good at. After a while killing bad guys is just something you do, like a day job for anyone else.”

She stops and looks at you, “Not that you know what a day job is like I guess.”

You shake your head no. The only thing you remember is fighting and fixing.

“So that’s part of it I guess,” she says, “The other part is I didn’t want any of the jobs they tried to offer me. I mean, could you see me on a farm or working in some factory making shirts for people to wear?”

You think about that for a minute, trying to imagine Morrigan making a shirt. You aren’t exactly sure how to make a shirt, but you can’t imagine Morrigan making one or working on a farm either.

“No,” you finally say.

“Exactly,” she says, just as Mary comes in with two plates full of food.

“I see we’re doing well,” Mary says, expertly managing to balance plates, utensils and a small cup of milk in each hand, setting one down on Morrigan’s lap and then the other one next to you on the floor.

“Yeah,” says Morrigan, “Nurse Billy here is taking real good care of me.”

Mary smiles as you nod.

“Well make sure that you call me if you need any help,” says Mary, before turning and heading out the door.

“Yeah yeah,” says Morrigan, already picking at her food with her good hand, “I’m fine.”

Mary just grins as she walks out the door, “You too Billy,” she says before finally heading back downstairs.

“I think it’s been fifteen minutes,” says Morrigan as you go to use the towel again, “So eat your breakfast before it gets cold.”

You nod, setting the towel back into the bucket, which has warmed up from when you got it and start to eat.

As you sit there and eat your breakfast, watching Morrigan do her best to eat with one hand, a question pops into your head.

“What was?” you ask Morrigan.

“What was what?” she asks, pausing her fork halfway to her mouth with a sausage on it.

“On your lists of things to do when you grow up,” you finish.

Morrigan looks at you as she chews her sausage, clearly thinking.

“Honestly Billy…” she says, “I don’t really remember. I don’t think I ever really decided. I mean, part of me always wanted to join the army, so I guess I accomplished that, but it wasn’t what I thought it was going to be like.” She pauses to take another bite. “Other than that…probably just what everybody else wanted, grow up, get married and maybe pop out a couple kids someday.” She laughs at that, suddenly, a short sharp bark. “I mean, could you see me being a mother now? Raising kids?” She shakes her head. “I’d be a horrible mom.”

She pauses and looks at you.

“Not that you’d know that I guess,” she says, “You don’t even know where kids come from, do you?”

You just shake your head no. You don’t know where kids come from, not that you’d really thought about it. There aren’t terribly many around Fort Riley in the first place.

“Figures,” Morrigan says, “But anyway, I guess I just wanted to have a relatively normal life.” She snorts. “You can see how well that turned out.”

By now the two of you have finished eating your breakfast’s and Morrigan seems to have stopped talking for the moment, though she seems a bit fidgety.

“Do you need help with anything?” you ask Morrigan as you start to stand up, gathering up your plate and your utensils as you do so.

“I don’t think so,” Morrigan says doing the same and handing her plate to you, which you take and stack properly so you can carry it easier, “It’s just my arm that hurts, not my whole body.”

You nod, watching as Morrigan finally throws back her blanket, and revealing most of her legs as she puts her feet on the ground and uses her good hand to help her stand upright.

“Yeah I think I’m good,” she says wincing a little bit as she tries to flex her shoulder.

“You should try not to move it,” you say, remembering Doc Smith’s instructions.

“Yeah, I won’t,” she says, “It hurts too much. You think you could get me a sling while I change?”

You nod, turning and heading out of the room, shutting the door behind you as you hear Morrigan moving about in her room. Taking the dishes down to the kitchen first, you’re greeted by the rest of MMS finishing up breakfast.

“Hey there Will,” says Nem with a grin as she neatly spears the last of the sausage and puts it in her mouth, “How’s Morrigan doing?”

“She’s ok,” you say as you put the dishes in the sink, “Sore.”

“She’s lucky it’s only sore,” comments Bellona, “If that had gone through her vest it’d be a lot worse.”

“Yeah,” says Nem, “But it didn’t, so we’ll just leave it at that, can’t think too hard about stuff like that in this line of work can we?”

Cath just shakes her head, Sarah nodding with her.
>>
>>41555832
Heading back out of the kitchen as the chatter starts back up, you go to your locker to get your big medical kit, which you know has at least one arm sling in it. Heading back upstairs you knock on Morrigan’s door since it’s still closed and you remember how Mary told you that you shouldn’t see girls naked unless they told you it was ok.

“Come in Billy,” Morrigan says, obviously expecting you.

You open the door and walk in, finding Morrigan sitting on the bed with her left arm cradled by her right.

“You got a sling in there?” she asks.

You nod, sitting down next to her and opening the bag, digging through it for the sling. Finding it, you have her hold out her arm so that you can wrap it up properly. Doing the best you can, you start to tie it up behind her neck as a question lodges in your brain.

“Morrigan?” you ask as you finish tying up the sling, making sure it’s tight.

“What Billy?” she asks, turning to look at you.

“Where do kids come from?” you ask as you finish your work, letting your hands drop down to your bag to pack it up again.

You look up as you hear a cough, Morrigan’s face turning an interesting shade of red as her eyes widen.

Aaand since I'm a horrible person, that's where we're going to be ending today's thread.

Next time we will pick up with might quite possibly be the most awkward question of Morrigan's life. Or not, we'll see how it goes.

Other than that, thinking about doing a timeskip sometime, probably a few months in length.

Hope you enjoyed the thread, open for QandA for a bit and hope to see you next time.
