Welcome back to ZoneQuest! I took a day off uni to do this, so you'd all better love me for it!

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=ZoneQuest

Last time:
You spend your first night in the ruined city in the north. You woke in the morning to light rain, and after breakfast you entered a semi-destroyed hospital. After exploring a little and finding a dark corridor, you went down another passage to try and find a light source. However, as soon as you tried to open a door, a pair of glowing yellow eyes flickered past the dark behind the door, and you began to hear scratching behind the door!

>pick the lock (avg. roll 27, DC 50)

After a few minutes of infuriating jamming of the wire into the lock, you make no more progress than before. Frustrated, you kick the door.

Far from being just an innocent expression of frustration, the kick reverberates around the building, and out onto the street. The acoustics appear to have been designed without a thought to privacy, and if there was anything in the building you've definitely woken it up.

To confirm this thought, you hear a growl from behind the door. A shadow moves inside, and you back away slowly. Scratching sounds ensue from the other side, and you catch a glimpse of a pair of glowing yellow eyes.

>Prepare to attack
>Fuck that, run!

Finally!

>Fuck that, run!

You retreat back the way you came, as the clawing becomes louder and you hear animalistic clicks and grunts of exertion. Re-entering the foyer you draw your knife, and weigh up your options.

>Balcony

You can hear the door giving way, so you quickly climb up the less-broken stairwell to the balcony. However, in your haste you cut your leg on an exposed wood splinter, which sticks in your calf. (Health reduced by 3, was 35, now 32). Cursing your luck, you pull it out, but with no time to bandage it you look around for a hiding place. You spot a stack of book boxes in a corner, and after emptying a few you hide under them best you can.

Your heavy breathing subsides after a few minutes, and you realise that there are no longer scratching noises coming from the right hallway. Damn it! That either means that whatever it was has given up, or is waiting or looking for you. You peek downstairs, but see nothing. After waiting five more minutes you finally gather the courage to take a better look, and lift off your boxes.

Peering over the balustrade, you look down into the foyer. Nothing seems to have been disturbed, but there are a couple of patches of blood that you aren't sure were there before. However, the coast seems clear so you climb down and, noting the door to the right hallway is now open, decide how to proceed.

You've only got what's specifically listed in your inventory. However, the lake cane could work, if you threw it hard enough...

>Write in

You take a paticularly hard piece of cane from your pack, and throw it down the dark corridor. You think for a moment it didn't have any effect, but after a second you hear a loud metallic clang, confirming its connection with a pipe of some kind (1x cane removed). You head down the right corridor.

The door's been torn open, which means that whatever it was either gave up or is behind you. Either option is dangerous, so you keep your knife drawn. Entering the new room, you see a dentist's chair, several metal benches with miscellaneous medical equipment on them, and a locked cupboard. You also grab a few scalpel and wire like objects, which you think you could probably use for some kind of lockpicking, just like you learned from your father. (Added: Lockpick kit).

You manage to jimmy the lock open without too much effort, and open up the cupboard. With that done, you hear glass breaking from the foyer. Worried that the creature could be getting closer, you prepare to move on. To your left is a door leading to another dark corridor. >Take the stairs

You want to put as much distance between you and the creature as possible, so you move up the stairs as they wind towards another floor. However, the sounds below of breaking glass have spooked you, so you draw your handgun and load a magazine of 15 rounds.

The next floor appears, strangely, more intact than the first. You've walked into a staffroom, which is full of coloured couches and several vending machines. Sensing an oppurtunity to fill your food compartment, you check out the drawers.

3 x Cutlery
8 x Packaged meal
1 x Glass cup
4 x Paper
1 x Staff Key
2 x Strong wire
1 x Scissors

(Inventory 38/50kg)

You look outside, and are suprised to find that it's nearing the end of the afternoon already. However, you see something else that could explain the creature in the hospital.

Animals. Great herds of them, walking through the wrecked streets of the city. You think you see about a hundred deer appearing from the Jungle on East street and walking through the Square. A little way ahead you can see a pack of wild dogs chasing a young stag that has been separated from his pack. The yaps and calls of the animals fill the air, and for the first time in a while you are reminded of home. As the sun begins its descent, you lapse into a daydream.

It's a memory that you had forgotten until now, of you and your dad at the Wellington Zoo back home. You would have only been about nine at the time, and you're riding on his shoulders and looking at the giraffes in their savannah enclosure. Your dad is explaining something about Giraffe mating behaiviour, which in retrospect appears to be a strange thing to talk to a nine-year-old about, but that was always your father's way.

He takes you all around the Zoo, seeing your favourites like the otters and the red pandas, but come three oclock you're tired and the two of you decide to head home. You haven't been to the Zoo since your mother left, and your dad used to make an effort to take you every second weekend after school. On the way back, your father's phone rings.

"What? The Chileans... they shouldn't be there, the treaty... Yeah, yeah I know. What does the Admiral say? What?! What the hell do you mean, tomorrow? George- Goddamnit George I have Matt with me, you know that. No I can't leave him with Mary! I'm not missing out on my own child growing up because our dumbass government can't keep their warships in their pants! Tell the CO that if I go this time I'm done. What? No! He can consider this my resignation. Yeah, I'm sorry, mate. I'll talk to the Admiral tonight. Gotta go. The Zone? No, they wouldn't deploy us there...

You can't remember any more, as you were too young to understand and fell asleep quickly. All you knew is that the next day your dad left with George to fight in the Australi-Chilean war, and you spend two years with your aunt Mary. When your dad returned, he would never speak to you about his years in the Zone.

You sigh and turn back from the window. As soon as you turn you sense something wrong, and some animal survival instict kicks in as the beast lunges at you. You step to the side, and face a large, growling spotted cheetah.

The cheetah bolts off, trampling you as it jumps out the window and up a fire escape.

Okay, I'm short on time so I'll go with this one. You crawl out of the staffroom and into the next room, an office, leaving a blood trail along the floor. You bite down on painkillers as you crawl, but you begin to feel faint as you close the door behind you and push a desk to block it. You rifle through your pack and bite down on anything that seems vaugely medical, both drugs and plants. You manage to cover three of your major cuts before passing out but your nose is still bleeding freely, and you fall into feverish uncouciousness.

When you wake it feels like your head is on fire. Your clothes are covered in dried blood, and it's night outside. Thankfully, the bleeding has stopped but you're afraid of moving as it could upset your injuries. (You are now STABLE, and you will eventually recover. Until you complete three long rests, your maximum health will be 10, and all attribute bonuses are temporarily lost.)

You look around the office and notice your bag, its contents strewn across the floor. You reach for your handgun to defend yourself but realise with a jolt that nearly knocks you out again that you've left it in the other room.

Will do man, cheers. I started this thread too early and didn't allow enough time to finish it. Ill try for another weekend session and start at your guys' peak time, which seems to be my 1:30pm.

>TYPEFAST

You brace yourself and stand up. It hurts, and you feel some clotted wounds open on your chest but you stay in more or less one piece. You stagger into the hallway and look down. It's dark, and your vision is still blurry so you can't see much, but you figure that you're doing well if no yellow and black spotted felines have ripped your face in two yet.

You peer around the door of the staffroom and find a strange sight. A yellow haze envelops the room. You step inside, and gasp.

On the floor are the bodies of three cheetahs, including the one that attacked you. They appear to have been literally ripped to pieces, as two are missing limbs. Around them, arranged in a five-pointed circle, are the Kay'at figurines you've seen before. In the centre is the one that you found in the hut with your father's uniform. It must have fallen out of your pack when you wrestled with the cheetah!

This time, you can't discount the mystery of the Kay'at figurines. Every time you've been in danger, or near death, they've been there, in some way. It's like there's something watching and following you, always there when you need it most. You pick up your figurine, leaving the others, and put the gun and knife into your pockets.

You feel safer in the mist, and you lie down on a coach to rest. You doubt that anything else will come in here, and you can spend the night here before returning to the Square. Within minutes you're asleep, and for once you do not dream.

Thanks for running with me today, everyone, sorry I've had to cut it short. I'll put up volume 6 when I get home, and hopefully I'll see some of you this evening. In the meantime, I'll try not to take too long, I realise it's nearing the US night time, and midweek.

Hopefully see you all this evening!

You feel capable of performing basic tasks, but you should probably focus on some less dangerous ventures. For example, you notice that your clothes are torn and crusted with blood. The only things still intact are your trusty sweatshirt, still in your bag, and your shoes. You'll need some more pants and a shirt, though. Your food supplies should last you a while, but it never hurts to have more. Also, you could use some other, more modern equipment that could be found around this city. However, though you're keen to improve your inventory, you remember not to put too much strain on your body for the next few days, as you're pretty messed up.

You decide to try and get some meat off these cheetahs. You know how to do it in theory, but when you draw your knife and start cutting through skin and gristle it's very different. You end up only cutting a few kilograms from the flanks of the lean animals, as the smell is making you naseous. (Added: Meat x 4. Tooth x 3)

You exit the staffroom with your gear and draw your gun. Last time it saved your life, so you're keeping it drawn from now on. You move down the corridor through what seems to be an admisistration area, and come to an old elevator chute. To your left and right there are different hallways, both dark but the left corridor seems to let in patchy sunlight, and the elevator shoot only leads down.

And please remember to save the thread.

Oh yes, keep the safety on the gun until we need to use it. Don't want to accidentally fire off any shots while we explore.

That reminds me, yes we can eat cheeta meat, but it would likely taste rather gamey. We should eat some of it fresh while we can, and then we get to a safe enough place to do so, make a camp fire that we can dry out and smoke the rest so we can turn it into jerky so the meat can keep. One the meat is directly over the heat and smoke, it will take hours or over night to cure like that.

We could stand to rest while the meat smokes as well

Hey, I don't know if everyone had it or if it just me, but 4chan just crashed for about an hour so I'll wrap up the thread here. I'll put it up again at my 1:30pm NZT, which is exactly 18 hours from now. Hopefully I see you all there, and thanks for playing!

I had problems posting last night, so I packed it in.So it might be better to use this point to start a new thread with a good rest and cheetah jerky.
