You are Clarissa, a high-school student, Kimiko's Substitute Shinigami, violent murderer, and one of Karakura Town's spiritual protectors.

When you first state your demand, Hiyori rolls her eyes. "I told you, Soul Society not a fuckin' resort-"

"That's not what I mean. I'll be carrying out my part of the deal, as we agreed with Urahara." You declare. The short girl squints at you as she leans against a lamppost; she doesn't say anything, as if she's silently measuring your words. You try to snap her out of it by repeating your demand. "So, take me to Soul Society."

Ren makes a slight noise of surprise behind you; you didn't tell her or Naoko about the possibility of things turning out this way. Hiyori's eyes immediately dart towards the redhead, and, as if she finally arrived at a conclusion, she steps away from the post and rubs the back of her neck. "Alright." She says and begins to slowly approach. You feel a little relieved. On the contrary, you feel Naoko tense up.

"But I need to make sure of somethin' first," She stops right in front of you and glares daringly, trying to look down on you despite being considerably shorter. "I'll go to your place and make sure the body's dead. I'll cut its head off."

"...The hell?" You blurt out. Your reaction seems to be exactly what she's been waiting for.

"The deal was that you'll go join Urahara after you're done livin'. You won't be comin' back to that body, so I just wanna make sure that it's dead. It's no big deal, right?" She shrugs nonchalantly and continues. "How'd you off yourself, anyway? Did you hang? Overdosed on pills? Threw yourself off a building? Jumped under a car? Eh? Which one?"

Basically, she doesn't want to take you there. You try to retain a semblance of composure, but it's extremely hard to do with this chick. "That... wasn't part of the fucking deal, Hiyori. Just take me there. We had a goddamn agreement."

"Don't order me around. You're not goin' anywhere till you're dead. Once you go to Soul Society, you're not coming back here, get that through your thick skull. And if you ain't dead, then we're fucking done here, aren't we?!"

...

>"...If you don't want to take me there, just say so. I'll just have to force you."
>"What the hell is it to you?"

Alright, this is inconcenient. Hiyori please.
>"Let me talk to Urahara, then."
>>
>>41542564
>"What the hell is it to you?"
>"Let me talk to Urahara, then."
Well on the bright side, confirmation that it's at least possible for Clarissa to get there without dying.

>"What the hell is it to you?"
>"Let me talk to Urahara, then."

Do we still have the butterfly-thingie or whatever that let us message Urahara? Worst case if she refuses we could maybe use that to get a hold of him. Not that he's guaranteed to help but hey.

Well, I doubt Ren or Naoko will be okay with Clarissa suiciding so now that they know about that, we better find a safer way there.
>>
>>41542564
Okay guys, I think we've more than reached the point where mind control is the answer.
>>
>>41543068
It's never the asnwer
>>
>>41542564
One thing I feel like we need to get through Hiyori's skull is that Urahara obviously isn't doing this out of the goodness of his heart. He wants to monitor us, maybe have us do stuff for him, and decided that using force would be a bad use of resources. And if anything, Hiyori should be glad we want to go to the Soul Society because Urahara has no qualms keeping her here playing babysitter.
>>
>>41543103
It very much was the only answer to prevent Naoko from being arrested.
>>
>>41543068
There's really no reason to until we've at least clarified things with Hiyori and Urahara.
>>
>>41543068
Gil said it didn't work nearly as well on stronger spiritual beings didn't he? I think if we try to use it on Hiyori we're in for a nasty fight, or at least risking it.

"Let me talk to Urahara, then."

"I told ya that he doesn't have time for your shit. It's why I'm here instead. And besides, he's gonna tell you the same fuckin' thing, only he's gonna think of a convincin' excuse and word it so that your feelings don't get hurt. It's not a mystery what you're tryin' to pull here, it doesn't take a fuckin' detective to figure that one out, believe me," She smirks unpleasantly and shakes her head. "An' good luck actually gettin' to him. Hell Butterflies sometimes don't make it to their destinations, you know."

You clench your fist in irritation. Hiyori doesn't look at your hand, but she raises her guard and glares at you again, probably noticing your growing anger. "Are you saying you'd sabotage it?" You ask.

She scoffs. "Me? No, you fuckin' dickhead. I don't give a shit about you or the deal you made. Urahara simply might not 'receive' your message. Understand? He can ignore you if you become even more of a pain in the neck."

...It's probably true. Urahara can break contact easily and whenever he wants to. You don't really think that he will, since he still must be expecting you to carry out your part of the deal when the time comes, but... it's something that can happen.

"For someone who 'doesn't give a shit', you care too goddamn much." You point out as you plant a hand on your hip, returning the condescending glare.

"...I'm not gonna let some shitty human like you into Soul Society. It's not a place for you," Her scowl deepens, showing off not just anger, but disgust. "I don't like you. I don't like humans, either," She bluntly states. "Stick to your own fuckin' world, and don't try to make a mess in mine."

"I'm... not going to make a fucking mess. I'm not going there to break shit for no reason. Why the hell would I do that?"

"Are you fuckin' stupid?" She groans in frustration. "What you want to do is going to create a huge mess for sure, you idiot. Even if you went there to genuinely fucking sightsee, you're still an illegal Shinigami that doesn't belong anywhere.

A human like you could just shit all over the place and leave, but the rest of us would have to live in it. Of course I'm not gonna let you do that. When you croak for real, I'll take you there. It'll be your home from then on, so you won't be able to get away with stupid shit easily."

She pauses, still trying to pierce you with her hostile eyes. You grit your teeth and don't look away. "Are. We. Done. Here?" She slowly repeats herself.

...

>"...Enough. Take me there right now, or I'll fucking make you."
>Back down and let her go. Maybe there's a better way to do this. She could be wrong; Urahara might help you even though she thinks he won't.
>Other. (Write-in).

>>41543794
>"Look, you can give up this tough posturing already. In the first place you've made your distaste for me clear all along, but you're not the one I made a deal with, and let's both stop pretending your boss did it solely out of the goodness of his heart. I'm you to smuggle me in there, just get me in contact with Urahara. I'm certain that just like me, he'd rather an amicable chat about my situation than the alternative, no matter how much more powerful and great and majestic he is or whatever."
>>
>>41543794
"Well, since we're already out here, wanna fight? I know you've been wanting to beat me up since around when we've met, and I've gotta say, I feel the same. So how about a little sparring match, or would you rather go back to doing grunt work in a place you hate?"

The way I figure it, if we can't beat one lieutenant than we have no business infiltrating the Soul Society yet, and if we do beat her, it might be easier to use our mind powers on her because she'd be weak.
>>
>>41543877
>I'm not asking you to smuggle me in there
Shit, a part got lost in writing there.
>>
>>41543887
Maybe try using our powers, but I feel like she's belligerent and arrogant enough that it shouldn't take much prodding. Also it could be a perverse version of defeat meaning friendship. The only downside is we're still injured from being impaled.
>>
>>41543794
"You really think 'human' still describes what I am? Or 'shinigami' for that matter?"
>>
>>41543794
>"Frankly I don't give a shit what you have to say, I made my deal with your boss and I'm gonna discuss it with your boss. I'm sure he is indeed busy and I'm perfectly willing to wait a REASONABLE amount of time for his schedule to fit, but we made an agreement as equals, no matter how important or powerful he may be, and I expect it to be treated as one. If he won't, I guess it was a worthless agreement after all. But frankly, I bet he does, doesn't he?"
>>
>>41543887
Like I don't know, I don't see Hiyori yielding any time soon, unless we want to fight her, there's no real point continuing to talk. She's way too stubborn for that.
>>
>>41544165
She has no ground to stand on at all. Either she just delays our talk with Urahara a day or something for the butterfly to reach him, or she interferes with it and single-handedly ruins our deal with him which would get her in a mountain of trouble.
>>
>>41544190
You're assuming she's rational and I don't know why. I mean she could tell Urahara that we're really unstable and shouldn't be contacted for a while out of safety. Also this is boring. I'm bored.
>>
>>41543794
Voting over, writing!

Sorry for the delay, something briefly came up!
>>
>>41544218
Well why not fuck off then anon? No reason to stay bored here. As for the rest, she's given us no reason to doubt her rationality, and while she's done her best to get Clarissa to lay off Urahara and not bother him, she's never outright sabotaged us speaking to him. She's just trying to get Clarissa to give up because she found something she could actually refuse just fine (taking Clarissa to SS without her being dead) and trying to use that as a decoy to get us to believe a bunch of not-at-all true shit like him ignoring us or there being no chance in hell of us finding our way up there, because she figures if we just give up, there's no problem and the deal is still in place so she did nothing wrong. All we gotta do is call that bluff.
>>
>>41544318
Except pussyfooting around like this hasn't gotten results. I mean Clarissa's mental state is steadily deteriorating the more we wait around.
>>
>>41544448
Even if we didn't want to wait we can still just call her bluff here and hope she doesn't call ours (not being willing to wait and clear it up) back. Best case she folds and gets us in contact with Urahara. Worst case she keeps up her attitude and we're at square one and an fight or think up a different plan or whatever anyway. It's a win/win situation.
>>
>>41543877
It doesn't really matter what Hiyori thinks. She's not Urahara, and she's clearly not speaking in his stead; not even making an effort to. She doesn't like you and clearly doesn't want to help you or have anything to do with you, but you didn't make the deal with her, so her opinion counts for nothing. And you tell her precisely that. She can think whatever the hell she wants, but you need to speak with the Captain.

She scoffs at first, probably disliking your tone, but then smirks viciously, realizing something. "Whatever. You want to talk to him, go right ahead. But that has nothing to do with me, and I'm not gonna arrange shit for ya. You don't need to be in Soul Society to talk to him. If you need a butterfly, I'll give you one, but I don't need to do anythin' else for ya."

She steps away from you. A butterfly's small silhouette blinks under the streetlights and hovers near you. The uplifted corner of her mouth slowly lowers itself, her expression gradually returning to that grimacing scowl. "Matter o' fact, you're right. Your deal ain't any of my business. My only job here is to tell you the news about your little princess, and to keep this crappy town safe. Whatever that mophead comes up with, that's on him. If he tells me to bring you to Soul Society after all, then I'll do as the dickhead says. But I sure as hell won't do it just 'cuz some shitty human told me to."

Ren voices her displeasure in a quiet whisper as Hiyori continues her rant. "Wish she'd just leave already. Good lord, she's still talking."

You feel a little encouraged by your friend's comment; it's something to distract you from the stress of having to deal with such an unpleasant person.

...
>>
>>41544713
She keeps walking backwards while glaring at you unpleasantly, almost like she's not feeling safe about leaving her back exposed.

Hmmm, a pity she didn't fold but then that's hardly her personality. Well, frankly I sincerely doubt mind-control would work on her even if we wanted to compromise our morals further, and fighting her seems kinda pointless.

"Wait." You say. Hiyori stops under the light of the lamppost. Ren frowns, unhappy that her departure has been delayed. "You... want to fight, don't you?"

The girl's brown eyes glint with a sudden interest, but she doesn't let it show on her face. She doesn't respond; you continue. "If you hate my guts so much, you want to beat me up, don't you? So... give it a try, if you want."

Rather than denying or confirming it, she keeps staring. It almost feels like she's waiting for you to say more.

You oblige. "...Leaving things on this note is just gonna make it so that we're both pissed off. But... there's a way to let at least one of us leave satisfied."

"...I've been told not to kill you. You're right in that I'd love to do that, but my hands are tied," She mutters coldly, the eager showcase of aggressiveness from before absent in her voice. "If you want me to kill you, return to your body first. That way, we'll both win, eh?"

You can't risk your real body. And... a fight to the death isn't what you meant, either. Hiyori seems to recognize the slight hesitation in your eyes, so she scoffs with ridicule.

"If I fight you, it's gonna end in your death. I'd hold back, but I won't. As you said, I hate your fuckin' guts. You're a human who thinks you're more important than you really are, and it's pissing me off. I'll take whatever excuse you give me, though." She declares and sets a hand on her sheathed sword, her eyes regaining that bold, daring tint to them.

"I'm tougher than I look." You try to assure her, but she's not convinced.

(1/2)
>>
>>41545978
"I know exactly how tough you are," She says. You smirk and are about to declare that this is far from your best, but she apparently knows. "Ya can't go all out. If you do, you'll turn this town into a fuckin' Hollow country, and the Shinigami won't ignore your bullshit anymore. It's game over for you then. And... obviously, unless you go all out, you don't stand a chance. But give me the excuse. Come on."

Ren nudges you on the shoulder and whispers. "Clarissa? What the heck are you doing? Let her go and let's go home. Don't provoke her."

...

>"You're not fighting just me, you know. It's a three on one. Let's do this."
>"You're overestimating yourself. I can take you. On my own. Let's fight. I don't need you to go easy on me - I'll survive even if you try to kill me."

For starters, Ren can't fight. Maybe two on one, but I'd rather not Naoko get dragged into this.

Telling her it's okay to kill us is stupid.
>>
>>41546011
"It's kind of amazing how much of a bitch you are, if you're fine killing an opponent that you know would be fighting under a handicap? Honestly I'm not sure why you're even working as Urahara's lackey, seeing as you seem to hate him almost as much as you do me."
>>

Eh, fair enough. I'll switch to
>Back down. If she doesn't want it to be a friendly match, then don't risk it.
>>
>>41546177
It's unfortunate, because I forgot that Clarissa's full power has devastating side effects for the general area, and without it, I feel like she still struggles against individual hollows? Also Paul. That was embarassing on our part.
>>
>>41546255
Yeah, but that's her problem in a nutshell. And kinda why I'm worried about going to SS. Ichigo was weak but competent normally and could power-up to reasonable levels for fighting a captain. Clarissa is dogshit normally and powers up to become a nuke - regardless of how that holds up against a captain it's not good for the immediate vicinity. She's really not made for heroic rescues but I guess that's what we're going on, so hopefully she can find a happy middle-ground somewhere.
>>
>>41546255
Although on the OTHER hand, if we do go all out, crush Hiyori but don't kill her, we might be able to make her say the whole thing was her fault? That'd be fun. Kind of evil though, since while she's been a bitch, she technically isn't wrong.

>>41546011
Voting over, writing!
>>
>>41546324
I mean, that'd be ideal but until Clarissa gets a handle on her powers it's not really doable. And unless she can figure out a way to tap into them without everything going tits-up, she can't easily train with them either.
>>
>>41546340
She better not think we're scared of her. We just aren't gonna essentially fight with two live grenades in our hands, and we don't hate her more than we like everyone in the town.
>>
>>41546360
Maybe we can actually focus on getting stronger? Gilgamesh should like that. Also maybe work on gaslighting our brother until he believes in ghosts.
>>
>>41546395
Eh, who cares what she thinks. She's just some asshole anyway.

>>41546413
Well we have been training with Naoko and Ren, but I dunno how we're training or whether it's effective. If Clarissa can't even tap into her plotrock powers for fear of ruining everything, how would she know where to start with no Shinigami around to guide her training?

Maybe for starters, we stop pretending to be a shinigami? Or a human, for that matter.

You decide it's best that you don't push it, but you don't know how to defuse the atmosphere. It seems that Hiyori really is interested in what you've been trying to propose here, and that she's hopeful enough that you won't chicken out of it after leading her on so much. Or, at least that's what you gauge from her persistent stare. If she's going to be needlessly serious about it, you don't want her to attack; maybe it's arrogant of you to think so, but you're more worried about your friends than yourself.

If the worst happens to you and you get your ass hopelessly handed to you on a plate, you have something to fall back on, as dangerous as it might be. But those two are humans, meaning that their bodies are much more fragile by comparison, and Ren is hardly a fighter. Hiyori already made it clear that she doesn't care for your handicap, so what if she goes even scummier and tries to take out Ren and Naoko first?

You don't know how strong she is, but listening to her, she's apparently a big deal. Well... it still doesn't help you measure her ability at all, but she's probably strong, or she wouldn't gloat so goddamn much, right?

Hiyori finally lowers gaze and turns away. "Thought so." You hear her mutter in disappointment as she begins walking away. You get the impression that she's trying to provoke you with her exposed back, or rather, that she's hoping you take the bait, but you don't.

There's plenty you want to say to her after all that crap she put you through, nothing pleasant, of course, but you hold your tongue until her silhouette disappears with a blur. When she's out of earshot, you sigh in both relief and frustration, and turn back to your friends. You want to unload verbal abuse on that annoying blonde brat, but their worried looks catch you off-guard. Because of that, you forget the things you were about to say, and as a result, can't let loose your (still increasing) frustration.

There's an awkward silence. Your face twitches a bit as you try to guess the problem on your own while simultaneously suppressing the urge to bark out a question. Ren speaks up first.

"Soul Society is... the world where dead people go to, right?" You don't really get where she's going with that; you nod and silently urge her to get on with her point. "...And you were planning to go there? Alone?"

Her tone is a mixture of scolding, surprise and worry. You shrug. "Kimiko is there and she's in trouble, even if it might not seem that way from what Hiyori said."

"Clarissa..! There's... no guarantee that you'd return, is there?" Ren's voice gradually grows louder and angrier. "Were you seriously planning to go there just like that? And leave us behind?"

>>
>>41547130
>"Well you heard her, just going there probably won't kill me right? I...want to help Kimiko out. That's a decision only I can make. >>41547195
>>41547201
No we fucking wouldn't. Kimiko's life isn't in danger, at worst she's going back to a vaguely unhappy existence as a sheltered noblewoman. That's not worth Ren and Naoko getting themselves hurt, especially since Ren still has no combat abilities.

Ichigo at least is a selfless and kind person, when you get down to it, Clarissa... isn't. Like this whole thing is essentially stalking someone we barely know, don't even know what they look like, because we gotta fuck SOMEONE to stop our own guilt from eating us alive, and we don't want to cheat on someone who might have already broken up with us.

Not really anon. I mean obviously kinda sorta murdering someone puts Clarissa at a disadvantage, though we still don't know for sure what the circumstances were. She's been generally selfless and very self-sacrificing during the quest, refusing to stop patrolling while injured for example, helping Naoko and Ren of course. But whatever, arguable.

That said this is nothing like stalking Kimiko. Checking up on someone who'd agreed to go out with you when they mysteriously disappear is one of the most justifiable reasons to ask after someone, and if the report returned was 'she's alive and well and seems happy with her life in SS' rather than a report matching what she stated to be her worst fear, I at least would be happy to leave her alone and take it as a break-up and I'm pretty sure anons and thus Clarissa would too (although even then if it wasn't such a huge pain to get to SS, she'd be justified trying to talk to her for closure).

It's a tricky subject. I don't know, I'm starting to think maybe we should have fought Hiyori anyway even though it's unlikely to help in the long run. Like we should have told Naoko to get Ren as far from here as possible, or go full DBZ and challenge Hiyori somewhere there isn't any people, like outside the city or something.

>go full DBZ and challenge Hiyori somewhere there isn't any people, like outside the city or something.
Hiyori's not suicidal, and doesn't love humans enough to give up her advantage like that!
>>
>>41549046
Truly, Hiryori a shit.
>>
>>41549046
Huh, so effectively we'd have both hands tied behind our back and Hiyori would still be coming at us to kill. Yeah we definitely need to learn some balance between our current mediocre baseline and JACK IS BACK.
>>
>>41549061
She's just prejudiced! She doesn't really mean it some other times.
>>
>>41549109
Learning how to use your powers right in the middle of to-the-death combat is an important part of Bleach!

But it might not have worked out too well.
>>
>>41549161
I don't really get why she sees us as a human instead of just a freak or aberration.
>>
>>41549200
Let's save it for when to-the-death is necessary, or at least more tangibly beneficial. Hiyori talking smack be damned.
>>
>>41549210
An abnormal human is still a human. Clarissa's behaviour is still something that Hiyori perceives as 'typical human' behaviour. The rest doesn't really mean much to her.
>>
>>41549320
I still never really got the differentiation between shinigami and human, considering how petty, selfish, and just plan psychotic shinigami can be.
>>
>>41549615
I like to think that the main differences are life longevity and the general understanding of how the world works. Shinigami get to see and go through a lot more than humans, and it shows in most of their attitudes and behaviours. Shinigami could probably be considered to be generally wiser than even the oldest humans.

Death is a tiny and negligible thing that's basically brought down from something highly mysterious and dreadful into a very simple and basic science. Humans die, go to Soul Society, and then reincarnate. Since all of this is known by pretty much every Shinigami, 'life' must not really hold that much value in many people's eyes.

Only a Shinigami can relate to another Shinigami, but humans are probably considered to be simple and without much depth, as their life experiences can only ever go as far as their short lives.

...Or, well, something along those lines. At least I think so. I like thinking about stuff like this. And stuff like this is also why I like the setting.

But don't souls get destroyed a lot of the time, like when they're eaten by hollows, or killed by a Quincy etc?
>>
>>41549932
The Shinigami are there to make sure that it doesn't happen. They might not seem like it sometimes, but they're good at their jobs. They can use tactics, magic and numbers when they need to. Hollows like Grand Fisher and No one, who can outwit Shinigami, are very rare and even then can only get away with feeding on raw and unsuspecting recruits or people that make mistakes.

Those aren't particularly frequent occurrences. The Shinigami try to keep things in check, and ideally, this means that Hollows don't show up at all. Of course, mistakes happen sometimes, sometimes even because of the humans themselves, and occasionally a beastie slips through the cracks and gets to either hang out in the desert or terrorize people. The Hollow problem doesn't have a permanent solution, but the Quincy problem did, and they took care of it.

The Shinigami do work hard against threats to the balance, even if some of them dislike or couldn't care less about humans.

...Or so I interpret things, at least!

I'd love to keep talking more about stuff like this, but I'm sleepy and it's about time I actually went to sleep!

Yeah I'll bet. Well goodnight and thanks for running.

god, every time i check out this quest to see if you guys aren't gonna puss out and actually do something you say you're gonna do you just puss out that much harder
>>

There was no benefit to being aggressive with her anon.

Previous 'puss-outs' have been actual decisions with merit to both sides at least.

see, now that's where the bullshit starts. could've taken a page from not Gilgamesh and just made her take Clarissa, every time i skim thru this quest I see all these people wanting to get back Kimiko or whatever her name is and at every juncture where progress towards that could be made everyone backs off when even the slightest bump shows up. this is what almost thread 50 and all I've seen for the last 20 or so threads is
>We will do whatever it takes to get back the girl we love
>Oh well we won't do that
>or that
>or that either
>wait I've got it, we'll do that. everyone in agreement? great full steam ahead
>oh well if it means doing that then nevermind
>rinse and repeat
no wonder your own sword/power/not Gilgamesh is sick of Clarissa's shit. whatever, enjoy Bleach Quest: where nothing gets done edition or whatever

How do you propose to do that? MC would probably not work, and is pretty drastic anyway. It's already been discussed why fighting is out of the picture, and let's face it, even if we won in a regular fight there's nothing keeping her from going 'nu-uh' after anyway.
