>You are a villager girl named Ellen from a small village in the nation of Neir, on the continent of Teege. As a member of the local militia/guard, you were trained in swordplay. Your fighting style is best compared to the mercenary class, though you're officially considered a knight of Neir.

>You have recently been made a member of the prince's personal guard. You will begin to travel to another country to investigate an assassination attempt.

King Drasma and the knights he speaks with were certainly interested in the details you provided, but were only able to deduce one thing from the information you provided.

"That swordsman, as you describe him..." Yvette had said, "it's very likely that this necromancer, or whomever he represents, has begun to raise the Deadlords."

"Bovis, I believe, was the one fitting the description provided by yourself, that merchant, and Mitchell," Quidel had piped in, a bit too excited to be sharing this piece of historical trivia on undead warriors. He went on a bit about some of the major differences between the twelve of them, derailing the conversation with admittedly potentially-relevant information. Mus, Bovis, Tigris, Lepus, Draco, Anguila, Equus, Ovis, Simia, Gallus, Canus, and Porcus. No one was able to get those names out of their heads by the time the amateur historian spoke up.

On the topic of Dama, she is apparently a daughter of Loba, the leader of the mountain-dwelling Garou tribe. So to prevent any worse blood between man and wolfman, your group is planning on dropping her off on the way through, since said mountain range is what divides a certain route between Neir and Heim.

Some more time passed, and finallly King Drasma was ready to head off.

You're... excited, you have to say. You had an... interesting first impression of the Garou, and passing through in a way that means you'll meet more of them and learn more about them. Since that first meeting with Quidel, you've been very interested in history, and every now and again you'll just hang around and listen to him talk about various events.

He seems a bit disgruntled when you go to talk to him, but still strikes up a conversation about why it only seems that people from Orsin village get unwell around that necromancer.

"It's not just Orsin," he says, "when I was very far away from him on the day of the Dracozombie attack, I too felt unwell. Perhaps it has something to do with Tarvos Valley as a whole?"

You continue discussing this for awhile, wondering what it could mean.

Quidel starts, "perhaps... perhaps it has something to do with-"

A magnificent, piercing shriek, colored with centuries of history, fills Rakche as a whole, distracting Quidel from what he was about to say. From somewhere beneath the castle, a silver-scaled wyvern flies out, upon it the familiar form of the king. This, you presume, is Khozen, the fabled wyvern mount of all rulers of Neir.

Khozen takes to the skies, flying over the castle and the town as everyone looks on, impressed. The members of his children's personal guards, the family's most relevant retainers, and Antiman all follow him to a field, having expected this but having little to say on the topic. Quidel rides off ahead (lucky horse-backed bastard), and you find yourself following the wyvern at a similar pace to the likes of your fellow Orsin villagers.

When you make it there, King Drasma has just finished half-assing some sort of official gesture of entrustment of the continued running of Neir to Antiman in his stead while he's out of the country, an "honor he proudly accepts."

A few supply convoys more than before have been set up, but overall your party is only slightly larger than it was in Tarvos Valley.

Quidel is saying some goodbyes to his uncle, but you can't hear what they're saying from where you are, especially not with Robert literally yelling to get himself pumped up. Reese and Jay are just sort of ignoring him and waiting around.

Byron is, predictably, near Biff and Natalie, though again far enough that you can't hear them. Garrus is by Yvette's side, and all three of the pegasus-riding sisters are hanging around Salia.

Mitchell and Stefyn are talking to Dama. From what you can tell things are... a bit awkward on the human end.

You approach Biff, Byron, and Natalie, finally able to listen to whatever it is they're discussing.

"-and even after tripping over three flights of stairs, I'm as spry as a Swordmaster!"

"I... was asking what distracted you enough to send you down that much, or how a candle even got all over the hall. I understand the 'my girlfriend is the greatest healer ever!' aspect of your story."

"It's. Somewhat of a long story in and of itself." Nat turns aside, a bit red from the memory of this vaguely-described incident, and is promptly the first to notice you, greeting you with another plain-sounding "hello, Ellen."

Biff is the next to speak to you, "ah, Ellen, I've heard so much of your exploits, your heroism, your being among the current subjects of Yvette's infamous training sessions! Tell me, how've you been holding up there?"

"Training with Yvette's pretty tough stuff, of course, but I'm doing fine. It's exciting thinking about all the new things that could happen, and seeing Khozen for the first time really reinvigorated me. I've heard that you guys aren't without your own impressive stories, either."

Biff nods, continuing on, "oh, but details of our tales of mercenary work are best-saved for another day. If you ever find yourself exhausted, Natalie is not only great with staves, but she really knows how to bring out the restorative qualities of healing herbs!"

You knew about that already (knew Nat for years and all), but you can't bring yourself to tell Biff that, simply thanking him for letting you know.

Byron is a bit more serious, however, changing the topic of conversation by saying, "of course, I want all three of you to be careful. It appears that that Necromancer could be anywhere, and if his faction has somehow brought in any of the Deadlords..."

"I know, I'll be careful. I know how outclassed I am. I'm the only one here who's actually fought Bovis, and I'm honestly surprised I wasn't stabbed for it."

"Very well-said, Elllen!"

"Well, I don't fight directly anyway, so. I'll be as careful as always?"

And then you speak back up again, addressing Byron with your own concern, "you look out for yourself, too, Byron. Things wouldn't be the same without you."

Biff and Nat nod in agreement, followed by a somewhat stammery Byron adding, "of course. Thank you for your concern, all of you."

For the most part, you spend the first part of the trip with these three, either getting one-on-one time with Byron or Nat whenever Biff has the other doing something with him.

As you get closer to the Garou mountains in ensuing days, you do notice Quidel seeming to be increasingly moody when you get a chance to talk to him, but politely avoid the topic... Until at one point, one night, you overhear a rather loud discourse. Everyone was just trying to get to sleep.

"Well, maybe I don't want someone who eats people and steals things hanging around Princess Salia!"

A combination of shouting and barking matches Quidel's volume, "oh, keep saying shit like that and your horse will be digested before your Tarvosian ass can even ride into my home!"

When you step out, Garrus and Monica are also visible watching what's going on. Salia bursts out of her own tent in a nightgown, fuming at both of her friends.

"Would both of you stop this?!"

At the same time, they both say, "I don't like this [nomad's/wolf's] influence on you!"

Salia's own tired voice matches their own shouts, "are you two seriously fighting over me?!"

"Because this horse-riding history nerd thinks the Garou are all these-"

"You're the ones who kept devouring my ancestors before you headed out to this mountain! I swear, if we get killed because we have to go through a damned mountain for this pup... You have to understand why you shouldn't be hanging out with her!"

"Why don't you see why you clearly can't be-"

"Both of you shut up! I don't care whose grandmother was eaten by who, if you two are just going to fight over me, I don't want to talk to either of you! Leave me alone until you can be civil." With that, Salia heads back inside her tent.

Quidel starts to run over, stammering out, "S-Salia, wait-"

Monica pushes in front of him and shoves Quidel away, before giving an angry look to Dama, cracking her knuckles. "The princess is not speaking to either of you at the moment."

Dama looks down, tail between her legs, while Quidel sighs and gets on his horse, riding off.

He didn't ride off all that far, just away enough from the group to stare contemptuously at the mountains looming ever closer.

"Yeah, I've never seen you fly off the handle like that, especially saying stuff like that. Why were you even fighting?"

There's a pause before he speaks. "There's a... long, bloody history between the Garou and the Tarvos. Even before the Gerxel empire was up and about, there was... a lot of strife, in what is today Tarvos Valley. The Garou acted like good little dogs of the empire, especially when it meant they could receive support and compensation for something they had already been doing for a very long time. After Queen Hauteclere allied with the Tarvos for her revolution, they only got worse. The horrible deaths that befell the brothers and sisters of my ancestors... Ultimately, when she seized control of Neir, Queen Hauteclere had no choice but to have them all sent to this very mountain range to protect the people of her country, to protect the Tarvos. Any Garou I've met since then has been some thief or fugitive, Salia's friend included. You were literally there to see her arrested for burglary, and she's supposedly their leader's kid! And we're heading right into their home!"

You know why I can't stand Stefyn? He was one of the bandits who destroyed my home. He personally killed my best friend. Trying to equate that to some sort of feud is... Grrh!"

I can't tell you what to do, or how to do it, and we both know you don't have control over Dama or Salia's actions, only your own. Just remember that we're here to protect the royal family first and foremost."

Quidel sighs and nods, agreeing to at least try to think of something, thanking you for listening to him again. He asks for some time alone to think, though, and you oblige him, heading back in the general direction of Salia's tent.

As your luck would have it, you run into Stefyn and Dama, talking about things outside in that general area, sitting on the grass. Well, Dama is curled up like, well, a dog nearby.

"Why're you trying to help me so much, Stehffin?"

"It's, uh, Stefyn. With an ee-sound. And I guess... I don't know. I've made a lot of people hurt, physically and emotionally, just by never taking charge, and... It's never pleasant for someone you care about to hate you."

I was fast, I could... sort of kind of intimidate... And we were friends for a very long time! I couldn't say no, and a lot of the time I was terrified that we would die for it... It sort of... hit a point where he tried to steal the scepter of Katri and we had, uh, a bit of a falling-out. Nothing huge, and we made up after he got caught and became personal guard, but... Uh... In the immediate fallout, I ran as far from Rakche is possible, got lost in the mountains around Tarvos Valley..."

"And that's your villainous origin story?" Dama says, yawning and scratching her ear with her foot.

"Pretty much... How'd you even get to know Salia? Didn't she move to Tarvos when she was, er, six or so?"

Dama relays a story of a young Salia and "that falcoknight over there" being extremely rambunctious and adventurous, how Salia would often have her retainer fly her around the countryside and mountains. How Dama's mother found them, pegasus' wings damaged, cold and starved in the mountains, how she lived in her village for a few months as a super little kid, and how for the next year or so she kept visiting the mountains with Monica until "that thing with Dain."

You summarize your own chat with Quidel, and Garrus smiles a bit, continuing, "so all hope isn't lost for this to be overcome. "We're friends, Garrus. I just want to check up on you sometimes."

"Ah, yeah..." Garrus sighs in relief, "I'm glad you're not letting anything change between us just because you're part of my guard. I mean, I know how Yvette can be with recruits, and..."

You engage in a bit more small talk before you both head off to your respective sleeping arrangements.

Later the next day, while the party is walking, King Drasma shouts from above, "village is within our sights! Khozen, look, this is a major landmark in our journey!" Khozen replies with a piercing wyvern screech. Drasma replies to that with "gross cutesy noises he thinks we can't hear," as Dama loudly announces. This prompts snickering from Salia, but she catches and silences herself.

A tall, not-quite-young-but-definitely-not-old woman with ears, fangs, and tail like Vaga and Dama's, but admittedly significantly better-dressed, is the first to greet your group. In a stern, gruff voice, she demands to know what business your lot has coming through here.

"Dama, is that you? Mom is REALLY not happy with you right now, you know."

Dama just sort of looks down, and Yvette speaks up, "then I trust you already know the details?"

"Yeah, Vaga told us all about how she almost got BOTH of them hauled away."

You feel a need to interject here, out-of-turnness be damned. "Hey, she only got caught because she actually tried to help us when a bunch of-"

Yvette chides you, "Now is not the time, Ellen!"

The older garou doesn't seem too displeased, though, and is, in fact, interested in what you have to say. "So my little brother's stretching the truth again, is he? Eh, water's wet, we'll discuss it later. Either way, thanks for dropping off Dama. Long as you guys don't start anything, you can come on in for now. I'll try to set something up with mom if you need to discuss anything further." Her head jerked in a specific direction when she said "don't start anything," predictably facing Quidel. She also gives Salia a quick wave.

Landing nearby, Khozen curls up somewhere and Drasma climbs off of him. "What a trip this has been! I'll most certainly be pleased to meet Queen Loba in person after all I've heard!"

Yvette still looks annoyed with your outburst, and Dama just sort of walks into town casually.

You know that she's not just gonna drop this, so you preemptively bite the bullet and approach her.

"You know what I'm going to say, right?"

"'I emphasized not speaking out of turn in your training, that could have gone badly, don't do it again?' Yeah, sorry about that... I just, er, wanted to set the record straight."

Yvette groans. "Do not do it again."

"Yes, ma'am. Or, er, no, ma'am? Uh. I will not do it again, ma'am."

"I understand what you meant, Ellen."

There's a moment of awkward silence, and then you just sort of head into town.

It's not quite the bustling community that is Rakche, but considering the hour there are plenty of Garou wandering the streets, running shops, etc.

While the people with actual authority talk to the matriarch of the village, you decide you need to sate your appetite, hoping that they accept gold as payment here as you approach some sort of primarily-outdoor restaurant. Various game animals' carcasses are on display.

Since it's what came after you ordered "whatever" out of an unfamiliarity with the cuisine, how do you feel about bear meat?

>A. I don't mind game meats in general

Like all meat before it, you find the taste of bear wonderful, scarfing it down as your server relays a story of how Chief Loba's son was the one who killed the particular bear you're eating right now.

"George, there's hardly any need to brag on my behalf.

Mouthful of bear, you turn around and see Vaga, fiddling with his beaststone and flashing a toothy grin.

"Ahua said some fair-haired human brought up a few holes in my recount of what happened to our beloved sister. Would you happen to know anything about that?"

>A. What is this about
>B. No (blatantly lie and get back to your meat)

First of all... How dare you ruin my meal! Second, how dare you throw your own sister under the wagon for your cowardice. And finally, you got a lot of nerve to show yourself to me when you broke your promise to me. You may be a good hunter, but you have no honor to me. Begone! You will not foul my meal any further.
>>
>>41535480

>A. What is this about?
She asked, mouth full of bear meat.

I had fun writing this. But now, I'm embarrassed about it. So...

>A. What is this about
>>
>>41535556
"Why do you think you can come here and ruin my meal like this?"

The server, George apparently, sort of slinks back, not wanting to get involved. All other nearby Garou look... concerned about how this is about to play out.

Vaga just sighs and sits down nearby you, "I asked you a question. That hardly constitutes ruining a thin-"

"You have the nerve to approach me with your passive-aggressive observations after you leave your sister behind right after breaking a promise YOU agreed to!"

Vaga sighs.

"So you killed a bear on your own, but you're really bothering me."

You resume eating your food, and he sets his beaststone on the table.

Mouthful of bear, you indignantly ask, "wha d'you wan' fr'm me?!"

Vaga responds, "you seem like you want to start something. Do you want to start something... Whatever your name was?" He rolls the stone around, smiling sweetly, closing his eyes, and continuing, "I hope you want to start something."

It would be dumb to pick a fight with him, when you're surrounded by his kin.

You're the one that wants to start something. Coming in here and being all inquisitive! I'm just here to enjoy the hospitality of this restaurant. Besides that, why are you bothering me now when you could be ask for your sister's forgiveness?
>>
>>41535816
>>D. You'll fight, but without sword or stone. Just you and him, no weapons, no shifting. One on one.
Why not take the obvious choice and make it a contest of gluttony?
>>
>>41535841
We've already been eating, and are thus at a disadvantage. Worst-case scenario he declares "loser pays for everything" and we lose.
>>
>>41535861
And wrestling with a semi-full stomach is a good idea too?

"It's... pretty obvious that you just want to start something. Asking all these questions you know the answer to when I'm just here to eat bear. Shouldn't you be making things up with your little sister, anyway?"

"It won't be necessary," Vaga exclaims, pocketing his beaststone again. "She could never hold a grudge. Of course, if you don't want to fight, you could still indulge me with a different sort of contest. You have the appetite of a Garou, after all, so perhaps you think you could eat better than their chief's son?"

If we win, we earn Vaga's respect.
If it's a tie, we earn Vaga's respect.
If we lose, Vaga saves face, and respects you for putting up a good show.

The only downside is that no matter what happens, we'll wind up with a stomach-ache.

"Y'know what? You're on."

Vaga smiles again, happy for a competition to arise, and turns towards your server. "George," he says in a singsongy voice.

Two massive cuts of bear are placed in front of you and your newest nemesis, and upon the server's cue you both start tearing into it. A crowd of Garou watch, mostly females and all but a couple of whom rooting for their hometown hero. You tune them out, for the most part, focusing on your food.

However, your non-empty stomach proves your undoing, and just as you get ahead, even you can't help but retch from the sheer fullness of your stomach, and thus lose to the wretch who killed the bear to begin with.

Regardless, he congratulates you for your efforts and politely hands you a handkerchief of some sort to clean yourself off.

"V-Vaga, it's horrible!" Ahua, apparently his older sister, calls, much less composed-sounding than before, rushing over to the crowd while you sit.

"Now's kind of a bad time, Ahua. I'm a bit busy reveling in-"

"Someone attacked mom. She's lost consciousness, and-"

Vaga bolts off in the direction Ahua came from without another word of explanation.

You can follow on twitter @qmgrandflocto for updates, send us questions on our ask.fm of the same name (http://ask.fm/qmgrandflocto), and I'll be around to answer questions in-thread for as long as I'm needed. As a fair warning, we're only planning for one of the Garou to be actually able to be taken beyond the Garou village at this point and become a permanent party member. There'll be a pretty obvious point that doesn't EXPLICITLY say "this is where you choose your dog," but does if you know to look for it.
