Let's see... news.

I think I told you guys about my school schedule, that starts the 17th. We won't be done before then, so I kinda need to hear back from you on what we want to do- either a later start Thursday run (Probably around 19 or 20EST) or a shorter Tuesday run (I have to be up for class the next day). I can't even promise I'll be able to keep to the schedule, but I'm willing to take a swing at it, just let me know what you guys think.

++

You'd made it a point to be at the hospital at the opening of visiting hours. While it had gotten you an odd look from the guy at the desk out front, nobody had really questioned you too much as you walked past the desk. You already knew Anya's room, of course, and you were able to make it up practically before breakfast was brought up. You're glad you did, it makes the couple doughnuts you picked up for her that much more special.

You'd had to wait while a nurse took her vitals, which, thankfully, didn't take long at all. She's still pretty heavily drugged- while you're no nurse yourself, you do know how to read a lot of the bottles hung on her IV drip. It'd explain why, when she saw you at first, she whispered "Papa?" before blinking several times and really looking at you.

1/4
>>
Her face had hardened a bit when she'd seen you weren't who she thought. It had hurt a bit when that happened- you do understand that her real family may still be out there, but finding them could take decades. You'd had this very discussion with Slider last night, and she'd said that, even if you didn't adopt the girl, Katya would probably make her own efforts to- but that, as a guardian, one now recognized in almost every country as such- you'd have a much easier time of it, even with Stasya and Lilya. Especially with Stasya and Lilya, to be honest. They seem to view the older girl as their sister as much as anything, and had made it clear to you that, before they'd met you, she'd done a lot to protect them.

It was one of the few times they'd volunteered information about their past like that, even to you. They'd had trouble doing it, clearly wanting to tear up a couple times, but they'd told you... well, you doubt it was everything, but it was enough. More than enough.

It's why, now, you don't really hold it against her when she realizes you're not whoever she thought you were. You know more of what they all went through, though you doubt you got the full story. You doubt you ever will.

Still, you try a smile- she gives you a weak one back. "Frank." She says, letting her head flop back against the pillow. "I- I thought you were someone else."

"Sorry to disappoint." You respond. "Feeling better?"

"Sore." She says, simply, then pauses. "But I do. It's.... nice. Not having your head hurt all the time."

2/4
>>
"If I had known-" You start, and she shakes her head lightly.

"No. It's fine." She tilts her head to look over at you. "Where's Katya? I'd like to talk to her."

"She wasn't able to come-" You start.

"Oh." She responds, suddenly quieter. She smilies at Stasya when she takes a seat at the foot of the bed, though. She may not be sure what to think of you, but she still adores her 'sisters'. "Hello Stasya."

For her part, your redheaded daughter looks at her big sister- though she does favor Anya with a half-smile, so there's that.

"So I guess I'll be left here, then?" Anya asks. "I can't fly anymore, not like this. And-" She pauses and frowns. "And I'm not sure I want to. What if it's someone like Stasya or Lilya next time I'm shooting? What if it's someone like Katya?"

"What if it's someone like the colonel?" Stasya responds, quietly, before you can say anything. Anya goes pale.

"I-" She starts, and shakes her head.

"Well, we're on emergency leave, so we can't stay here very long." You affirm, shifting the topic away from 'the colonel'. Nothing the girls had told you gave you any reason to believe he was anything less than a monster, the king of guy you'd shoot after he ejected.

Then maybe strafed him on the ground once or twice, just to make sure.

"No more than a couple of days, then we have to go back to Europe, at least until we're demobilized and brought home."

"So I just stay here, alone?" She asks.

"It's up to you." You say. "We talked with Dr. Reed after the surgery. Your VDNI, the new one, I mean, our version, is... assisting, I guess is the word, the damaged part of your spine. It's not a perfect solution, but it'll let you get around just fine. They want you to see the heal witch one more time, but after you do, you can come back with us."

"So why haven't you ordered that?" She asks. "I could see Katya tomorrow-"

3/4
>>
"Because it's not a good long-term solution." You respond. "It's not even that good a short term one. That implant- our implants, I mean, were never meant to do what yours is doing right now. If we do it that way, we'll have to be back here by the end of the year."

"Well what else is there?" She asks. "I miss Katya."

"Two things. First is waiting for their witch to be able to see you long enough to regrow that section of your spine, then have your implant deactivated or converted back to work the way it's supposed to. That could take a while, a couple of weeks. You'd have to stay here in California. That's alright if you want to do that, I have family and friends here who could take you, and I think we could get Katya out here to stay with you."

"And the other? I don't mind waiting if I can stay with her." Anya says.

"The other is letting the docs implant something called scorpion." You respond. "Apparently it's designed specifically for this kind of thing, but it's not perfect, and it'd be in for the rest of your life."

Anya makes a face. "What do you think I should do?" She asks, after a minute.

[] I think you should do whatever sounds best to you.
[] I think you ought to just come back- things will be calmer in peacetime, we'll be able to think things out more clearly.
[] I think you ought to wait for Melissa to be able to really work on you.
[] This scorpion thing would have you back out by the time we had to leave, it sounds like the best choice.

By the way Ghost, whenever you have time, could you answer this question for me, please?

>Alt History!Anon here, what were the major divergences from the OTL to the Strike Witches Quest timeline? What changed, and what hadn't? What's the culture like in 1989? In the future? How would the witches affect popular culture with their presence? Would the actual Strike Witches anime be made?

>[X] I think you ought to wait for Melissa to be able to really work on you.

Do we know a friend of Brigitte to have an eye on her? I wouldn't want to leave her all alone, least some letter soup snatches her.

>Would the actual Strike Witches anime be made?

I can get this part for you now: Kinda.

In setting (Unsurprisingly) there's a lot of media centered on witches, to include cartoons and comic books. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to see a Strike witches anime, though I imagine it'd be somewhat changed from it's real-world version.

It's the option with the least regrets. The drawback of it is it waiting which while waiting and do nothing isn't the best thing to do maybe we can see if we can keep her busy.

Thing is, I'm going to assume that the same age-restrictions apply. No paedophilia here -- they're all over eighteen.

Like what >>41528045 suggested, it's fetish porn, basically.

scorpion is a cool name but being a protoype mech aug is a bad life choice. there's immunosuppressors, cyberpsychosis, and by the turn of the millenium you're as obsolete as a curly cord telephone.
>>
>>41528063
that it does
>>
>>41528018

I wouldn't stress that too much. If you think about it, any witch in the porn industry is there specifically because that's what she wants. Even a pretty weak or untalented witch can make enough money in a conventional field that the adult entertainment industry just can't compete. What's a couple grand for a shoot compared to a six or seven digit contract with a big corporation?

[x] I think you ought to wait for Melissa to be able to really work on you.

You sigh. "Well, you said you're not sure you want to fly again?" YOu ask. She nods.

"It's just-" She pauses. "What if I'm killing good people? I know I did before- before- "

"Before papa saved you." Stasya supplies.

"Before Katya saved me." Anya responds.

Stasya, for her part, frowns a bit at the correction- you put a hand on her shoulder and shake your head.

"It's your choice, and always will be. If you don't want to fly anymore-"

"But I don't want to not fly." Anya insists, shaking her head. "I love flying! it's just- I don't- I can't do it anymore, not fighters, not in anger, not- I just can't kill anymore. I don't want to. What if the next plane I shoot down has someone like Stasya or Lilya in it?"

You nod. "I understand, and like I said, if that's how you feel, that's fine. You don't want to fly fighters at all?"

She shakes her head. "Not- no." She shakes her head again. "I don't want to kill anymore."

"What about old ones?" You ask, thinking of how much the colonel- colonel Lee, that is, would love to have a witch helping out with his old warbirds.

Anya looks at you quizzically. "What do you mean?"

"I've got a good friend who's part of what we call the CAF, Confederate air force." You explain. "They fly old martian war-era aircraft at airshows. He'd love to have your help, if that interests you. He's not too far from here."

"No killing?" Anya asks.

You shake your head. "None at all. Their guns aren't even always installed, and they never fly with ammo."

1/2
>>
She hesitates.

"Either way, I think you ought to wait for Melissa to see you again." You say. "It's the best option, even if you have to wait, and there's no rush."

You wait for a second before adding in "But I think it's your decision, and you need to do what you think's right. All I want to do here is help you decide, then pass that decision along."

She nods, distractedly. "And you said you could get Katya to come back?"

"I can try." You respond. "But not even I can order witches around like that. If they want her available in Europe, she'll have to stay there."

She nods again. "I- I think I'll wait, then." She says, after a moment. "I guess I can help your friend while I do?"

"If you want." You say, nodding yourself. "I'm not trying to force you into anything."

"I-" She pauses. "I know. Thank you."

"So you want to wait?" You ask, just to confirm.

She nods. "Yes. How soon will I be able to leave here, though?"

You shrug. "We can try to get you cleared out today, if the doc thinks it's ok. Maybe take a drive out to the ranch and see if you can get settled in with Mr. Lee."

"I'd like that." She says with a faint smile.

The moment is a short one. "Papa, can we come with?" Stasya asks.

[x] I don't see why not! Maybe we can get you a ride in a biplane.

You smile and nod, ruffling Stasya's hair. "I don't see why not! Maybe we can get you a ride in a biplane."

She looks up at you. "Papa, what's a biplane?"

You laugh, and shake your head- sometimes you forget that, for as deadly in the air as they are, your daughters weren't taught anything they didn't need to know. "You'll see." You promise, looking over at Anya. "Anya, I have to step out to make a couple phone calls, will you be alright in here with Stasya?"

They look at each other for a second, and she nods. "We'll be alright." She says. "And- hey Frank?"

"Mm?" You ask, stopping in the door.

"Thank you." She says quietly. "For everything. I'm glad I wasn't right about you."

You smile at her as an answer, and step out into the hall- to be greeted by Dr. Reed. "Mr. Bishop."

You nod at her. "Dr. Reed. How is my ward?"

"She's fine." The woman answers. "Probably fit for release, unless-"

"She wants to wait." You respond to the unspoken question with a shake of your head. "I agree with her. She wants out of combat flying anyway, out of the military.

"I see." Dr. Reed's voice betrays no emotion. "So she wants to wait for Melissa?"

You nod. "Yeah, that's the plan. That's still doable, right?"

"I don't see why it wouldn't be." She responds. "She may not be available for a couple months-"

"You said weeks originally." You cut her off. "What happened?"

She shrugs. "Melissa is in demand across the US. As far as we're aware of, she's the only witch with her specialty that wasn't scooped up by the military, and the military covens make sure their witches aren't on call for anyone but themselves. And she's one of the best in her field, so she's often booked solid."

You nod. "Fair enough, but it doesn't change our answer."

"Very well." She says. "I'll pass it along and make the booking myself, then call you. You'll be in town for the day?"

"I don't think so, let me give you the number of where we'll be." You respond, walking over to the nurse's station and borrowing a pen and a post it note. "We'll be there in a couple hours, it's a bit of a drive, and ought to be there most of the day."

"That works." She pauses. "Anything about your own implants we should know? Any difficulty or unusual pain or headaches?"

"Nope." You say, shaking your head. "Hell, I forget I even have them a lot of the time."

She nods. "Excellent. Well, let me go handle this, then I have some other work to do. Until next time, Mr. Bishop."

"Take it easy, doctor." You say, as she walks off.

It only takes a second to find a payphone down in the lobby. Of course, you have a couple calls to make- one to the colonel, one to Slider to have her meet you there, and you should probably check in with Ice, though you're not sure what time it is in London.

I believe vedibere actually came into a qtg to say that void quest was uncontinuable due to the length of time between the previous installment and how much of it relies on the player being knowledgeable about the things that happen in previous installments. Such a pity. That last slaughter of the priests was so fun though.

[x] Call Ice first

You decide to shoot a call to Tabby first. Dialing the international operator, you eventually get put through to the front desk of St. John's lodge, where you introduce yourself and ask for a line to her room. You're connected quickly, though it's Wendy that picks up.

"Kazanski residence." She says, sounding bright and cheerful.

"Heya Wendy." You greet. "Mind putting Ice on the line for me?"

"She's out, sir- er..." She hesitates. "Mas- mister bishop." She says.

"Out, huh?" You ask, surprised. "Witch business?"

"Personal." Wendy corrects. "She and miss Katya went out for supper. Do you want me to have her call you back?"

"... Colonel Lee..." She repeats, sounding kind of distracted. Probably writing a note- Ice knows who the colonel is, even if she's never met him. "Ok! anything else I should tell them?"

"Nope. Everything ok on that end?" You respond.

"Top shape." She says. "I'd planned to open up your rooms and air them out tomorrow, if that's alright with you."

You nod, again. "Sounds fine to me. I should be back in a day or two."

"Not that I can think of." You say. "You’ll have that taken care of by the time I get there?"

"Of course." She answers.

"Get a big bed." You order, before you forget. "I'd like a good sized one."

"I'd suspected you might." She says, her smile evident in her voice. "I also rather suspect Miss Tabitha and Miss Katya may have some input on the subject."

You laugh. "Yeah, maybe. Anyway, that's it, I've got other calls to make, Wendy. Be sure Ice gets that message, ok?"

"Of course, sir- er.... ah..." She falters at the end, and you laugh.

"See you later, Wendy." You say, hanging up after she says her goodbye.

Your next call is to the Colonel himself.

"Lee's house." He says, his Virginian accent carrying across the phone line easily.

"Colonel!" You say, happy to hear him.

"Frank! Young sir, I had begun to think you'd forgotten about us back home." He says, laughing. "Did you forget how to write, son?"

"Been busy, colonel." You say, grinning. "Hey, you mind if I bring some people out to meet you? I have a big favor to ask."

"Anything for a Bishop." He says. "When can I expect to see you?"

"Bout an hour, hour and a half?" You say.

"We'll have some of our girls out on the pad, so if I don't answer the doorbell, just come around back." He says. "Will you be eating supper with us?"

"If it's not too much trouble." You say. "There's five of us."

"Five? I say, sir, that's quite a few more than I remember." He says, laughing. "I'll be sure to have Sam cook extra. Some of my boys are over too, I hope you don't mind."

"Of course not." You say. "Look forward to meeting everyone."

"We look forward to seeing you, young sir." He says. "I'll go let them know."

Her hair goes to her shoulders in Jeanex's art.
It should actually be shorter in her maid get up given how curly and wavy I've made it.
>>
Your last call, to Slider, is easier, since you just tell her to get ready to go out to Mr. Lee's place, careful to avoid his adopted rank. You head back into Anya's room to find Dr. Reed unhooking her from her IVs and helping her sit up.

"Mr. Bishop." She says, greeting you. "I've taken the liberty of signing off on her release paperwork, I hope you don't mind. Her prescription is in her bag over there-" She points to a nondescript gym bag. "Along with some clothes. Antibiotics, follow the directions on the bottle, and painkillers."

"You ok to walk, Anya?" You ask, and she nods.

"Stick close to her, she may be weaker than she remembers." Dr. Reed orders, pulling the last needle out and swiftly putting a cotton ball over the tiny wound. "That's it." She says, taping it in place.

Stasya gets a piggyback ride while you stick close to Anya on the way out, carrying her bag for her. "We'll be eating dinner at the ranch." You tell the girls, looking for your ride- a slate grey Bronco you pulled from the local motor pool. With government tags and heavily tinted windows, you've not been bothered at all in it. "Have either of you ever been to a ranch?"

Stasya shakes her head- you feel her weight shift, and Anya mirrors the movement. "It's a bit different." You say, smiling.

After finding the bronco, you all pile in, stopping by the hotel to collect both Slider and Lilya. They were waiting in the lobby, and you're pretty sure someone may have recognized them, though it looked like you left before they were able to call anyone. Still, you'll pass that along to the city police, when you get the chance.

The drive out is longer than you remember, and takes about an hour. The grass lawn in front of the ranch house is full of vehicles, at least ten or twelve, so he's probably hosting a larger group for either the CAF or his reenactors.

>>
No one answers the doorbell, so you lead your gaggle around back, where several aircraft sit on the concrete pad. You recognize a few of the colonel's planes, a spitfire mk.1 and a M.S.406 among them, sitting alongside several other CAF planes. A couple mustangs, a corsair, and a SBD sit, clearly in restoration, the SBD not even being free of visible rust.

"Frank!" The colonel says, after a couple guy's eyes turn your way and your presence is pointed out. "Good to see you again, young sir. And you again, miss Kerner."

"Afternoon, Mister Lee." You say, noting his odd look when you fail to call him colonel. "Lemme introduce you to my daughters real fast. This is Lilya Bishop, and the one on my shoulders here is Stasya. This is Anya, my ward. Girls, I want you to meet Colonel Lee, a good family friend of mine."

You can feel Stasya and Lilya stiffen a bit at the mention of his rank, but they don't go anywhere.

"Ah! the honor is mine, ladies." He says, bowing. "I-" pronounced 'ah'- "Have the great pleasure of bein Colonel Edward Lee, CAF, 26th North Carolina. At your service."

You're about to prompt them when Stasya says "Hello." Her voice small. It's a pretty impressive display of her faith in you, and one you're about to comment on, when Rufus's bear-like head pops up from the cockpit of the SBD.

And he sees you.

And then, he sees Slider.

[x] Let Stasya down and take the hit.

You set Stasya down as Rufus lets out a happy yelp and scrambles out of the open canopy, jumping to the ground with a whump loud enough to hear from where you're standing. He has trouble getting his feet back under him, but as soon as he does, he comes galloping toward you, his tounge lolling out of his mouth and flapping in the breeze.

You step in front of the witches as he arrows in on you and spread your arms wide as he jumps, his weight knocking you back a step or two, though you manage to stay on your feet this time as he licks your face frantically. "Rufus!" You laugh, hugging your dog. "Hey buddy!"

It takes a minute for him to calm down enough for you to set him down- which, given how heavy he is, seems a bit longer than it is. Eventually, though, he stops trying to climb into your coat and you set him down, where he runs over and jumps on Slider enough to lick her a bit. He loses interest in her pretty quickly and walks over next to you- where the girls are standing.

"Go ahead girls, let him smell you a bit." You say, and all three of them look at you like you're crazy. You grin and reach down, taking Stasya's hand and showing her how to hold it out. Rufus sniffs her perfunctorily, then licks her hand. She pulls it back and looks at you while he walks over to sniff Lilya and Anya.

"Rufus, behave." You warn him. He looks up at you like he doesn't know what you're on about, then walks over to sit between Stasya and Lilya.

"Scratch him behind the ears, like this." You say, showing them how to do it. Rufus tilts his head up and pants happily. "See? he likes that."

"Rufus." You say, after a second. "Family." You indicate all the girls and Slider. Rufus cocks his head to the side, as if to say 'what, really?' then sniffs them again and saunters off.

"He been behaving?" You ask the colonel, who laughs.

"Of course! I've never seen a finer dog than that." He says. "Smart as a whip, been a good deal of help keeping the coyotes from scaring my horses, too."

"I bet he's loving that." You remark. "So how much do I owe you for his food?"

"Oh, I suspect a hundred should about cover it, sir." The colonel says, low-balling the price by far. "So, you said I may have a guest for some time?"

You look over at Anya, who looks at you. "Anya, over there, sir. She was hurt pretty badly earlier, and doesn't want to fly the fast jets anymore, it doesn't sit right with her."

The colonel nods, understandingly. "Well, I don't suppose we have many of those here." He says with a smile. "Would you like to learn how to fly some of these old ladies? Their fighting days are far behind them, but they can still make a crowd happy just by looking pretty."

Anya looks at the assembled aircraft. "Are these it?"

The colonel laughs. "Oh, heavens no. These are mostly under restoration, not airworthy yet." He says. "Frank, do you want to show her the hangar?"

You smile. "I'd love to. Anything new?"

He nods. "There's a lightning and one of the first moonbats in there, now, sir." He says. "The lightning is airworthy, but we need to do some more work on her for shows. The 'bat is more work, sir, not airworthy at all. We'd like to have her ready for VA day, but we'll settle for VE. The door is open, though, sir, please, show your girls around."

You nod, smiling at them and leading them over to the hangar. It's the 'work' hangar, not the 'show' hangar, so it's not quite as pretty, but it's enough. You feel all three girls freeze as they look in the hangar.

>>
"They're so pretty... " Lilya says, looking at the few restored warbirds. "Can we fly them, papa?"

"Not yet, kiddo. We'll have to work to get Anya taught if she's interested-"

"I am." Anya says, distractedly, walking over the the shape of the P-38 and walking along a tail boom, running her fingers along the metal skin. You smile as she does so.

"You like it, Anya?"You ask.

"It seems more like a piece of art, not a fighter." She says.

"It is, now." You say. "You're ok with staying here now?"

The girls both look up at you and then at Anya, who pauses. "I- you promise I'll never have to fight again if I don't want to." She asks, her voice severe. You nod. "And you promise if I want to leave, I can leave."

You nod again. "You have my word. We'll stay here and eat dinner, maybe stay the night and part of tomorrow."

She nods. "I think it'll be ok if you promise that." She says, looking back up at the lightning. "And if I'm allowed to learn how to fly these planes."

You smile at that. "We'll make sure you can start as soon as they can find you a pilot trainer." You say.

She smiles at you, a genuine, real smile, then looks back at the P-38 again. "Thank you." She says, staring at the warbird, then back at you. "Thank you." She repeats.

You'll take that as a win any day of the week.
>>

"and a SBD"

I remember when the Galveston banch of the CAF got its hands on one of those for their museum. It was supposedly the only one known in the world at the time. All that was left of it was the rusty cockpit for the pilot and rear gunner. This was like 20 years ago, I don't know if they were able to rebuild it or not.

>>
I thought Halley was gonna post something?
>>
>>41535530
Starting now. LurK didn't divide the posts by character counts so I've been busy counting.

“LOOK KID, JUST BECAUSE you’re a witch doesn’t mean you can get away with wrecking your hardware,” the exasperated chief mechanic exclaimed as he showed Kaede her busted-up Shinden II strikers. The nozzles were warped, there were cracks along the entire body, and the wings were jagged. The left striker even had panels falling off, and some of the internal parts and wiring were exposed as well.

“Chief, could you let Kaede off, just this once?” Takamiya pleaded. “She just got back in the air after getting grounded for a while. Of course she’d be excited to get maneuvering again.” She nudged the little white-haired witch forward. “See? She looks happy!” Kaede just stared at the mechanic blankly.

Tamaki chimed in. “Come on, Chief Suribachi. I know you could still fix these strikers. I mean, they’re not a total write-off, right? You could totally bring these strikers back to full working order soon!”

Chief Petty Officer Kuuzo Suribachi was not a happy man as he adjusted his rolled-up sleeves. His oil-encrusted overalls had not been changed for the past 72 hours, and his wavy and bushy hair literally stood on end due to the soot. He adjusted his rimless glasses before replying, “Commander Tamaki, things just don’t go that easily. Me and my boys bust our butts just to keeps these marvelous pieces of art in good condition even if you trash them constantly, so telling me to let off Ensign Kaede here just because she got excited would be a betrayal of the ideals we stand for! As a consequence, I’ll have to put fixing her strikers on low priority.”

Tamaki frowned, while Takamiya looked at him like he was insane. Kaede was still staring at him blankly.
>>
>>41535521
A lot of twin-engined WW2 birds were successful in their own right, bud.
>>
>>41535573
Takamiya spoke first to break up the sudden silence. “Come now, chief, stop fooling around. We expect these strikers to be back to full operational capacity within the next 24 hours.” She then turned her eyes to her superior officer. “After all, this is your reputation as a top-grade mechanic we’re talking about here…”

Tamaki caught her subordinate’s drift immediately and, smiling slyly, added, “Indeed. It would be a shame if something would happen to that reputation just because you failed to get a simple striker back in order…” Both witches then proceeded to do the classic noblewoman’s routine, laughing haughtily with one hand over the mouth.

“Man, you witches are crazy,” Suribachi exclaimed, sounding defeated. He put his worn gloves back on before continuing. “I’ll have you know, Commander Tamaki, you already have a pretty sizeable tab with the mechanics here. I hope you don’t forget that.”

“Sure, sure, I’ll pay for all of your drinks the next time we hit port,” Tamaki replied condescendingly. “Just get those repairs done quickly, got it?”

“Like I told you earlier, commander, pieces of art like these take time to fix and…” Suribachi raised an eyebrow as he saw both senior witches yawn. “Anyway, I’ll be seeing you ladies later. Duty calls.” With that, the mechanic turned to his subordinates, shouting at them to gather around for another round of ‘repair and restoration.’

“You know, I think you’re getting a bit too much on his case, Erika,” Tamaki noted dryly as she watched the chief mechanic shouting orders to his crew. “You know I could’ve called you out for mouthing off to him like that back there. Be thankful that I let you off easy this time.”
>>
>>41535592
Takamiya shrugged. “I don’t know boss, I think that cranky old man should learn to step down a notch of two. That attitude of his can get annoying. And besides, he was basically bullying a relatively new witch! Waiving off the Ensign like that… I can’t let that slide, boss.”

Tamaki narrowed her eyes at her subordinate. “I’m starting to suspect that you’re giving our dear little Ensign Kaede here some special treatment. Could it be that you’ve taken a shine to the little girl? Wait… Don’t tell me, you’ve starting to get a big sister complex over the little ensign? Or, maybe, you developed something else for her?” She elbowed the purple-haired witch lightly. “Geez, I didn’t know you liked them young, Lieutenant!”

“Ugh, even you, boss?” Takamiya exclaimed dejectedly. “For the last time, I do NOT have a big sister complex towards Ensign Kaede. I treat all the younger witches equally. I mean, I don’t know how all of you can get that idea at all.”

“You keep saying that, and yet here you are, clutching tightly to Kaede like someone’s going to take her away from you,” the redhead said bemusedly.

Sure enough, Takamiya was holding the white-haired witch tightly; her arms wrapped around Kaede the way a child would clutch her stuffed bear. Embarrassed, Takamiya broke away, almost pushing Kaede off her feet. “T-that was just a reflex! R-reflex! It was not like I suddenly became defensive or anything! I-isn’t that right E-ensign?” Kaede didn’t respond and for a moment was just staring back at Takamiya. A little while later, she nodded almost imperceptibly. “See? I-it was n-nothing at all!”

“Sure, sure, whatever you say Erika,” Tamaki replied, shrugging. “Anyway, how about we hit the wardroom and grab something to eat? All this heckling around with Chief Suribachi has gotten me hungry.”

Takamiya and Kaede nodded, but neither made any effort to start moving. Getting impatient, Tamaki started shoving both witches towards the nearest hatch. “Come on, quit your lollygagging and get moving! I hear they’ll be serving something special for lunch, so we can’t miss that!”

The other two witches finally got moving after a little more shoving, with Takamiya holding onto Kaede’s shoulders and Tamaki walking beside them. Finding the walk rather boring, the redhead decided to keep up the conversation. “So Erika, how has staying around with the Ensign been? Has she been talking much while nobody’s looking?”

“That was terrible, boss. You’ll never get far in the manzai scene with that kind of humor,” Takamiya replied dryly. “To answer your question, she’s still the same little quiet type, even when on her own. She reads a lot of books of course, mostly translated western titles for some reason. I’ve only managed to catch her practicing on her own with her Type 64 once, but I was impressed by her accuracy, considering how she was still using the old m84 scope. She also managed to slip a nap or two in the library and… wait.” The purple-haired witch stopped in her tracks. “Why the heck are we talking about the Ensign like she’s not here? Can’t you just ask her directly?”

“I… Well, you see…” Tamaki replied, stammering. “Well I guess I was kind of distracted by something on my mind back there and… oh look, we’re here! Come on, get in! We better double-time it or we won’t get any free tables!” With that, she slipped through the hatch and into the wardroom, her subordinates following close behind.
>>
>>41535612
THE REDHEAD STILL HAD A LOOK OF DISBELIEF as Takamiya placed the plates on their table. Even after reading the TODAY’S SPECIAL notice near the counter, Tamaki felt like it was either a lie, or an elaborate prank. The perfectly dark grill lines, the inviting smell, the juices just oozing out, and the color—OH GOD THAT PERFECT RED COLOR—everything was too good to be real…

“Awww!”

Her daze was interrupted by Takamiya promptly pinching her on the cheek. “Erika, that was totally uncalled for, you know! You could’ve at least waved a hand in front of my face or tapped my shoulder…”

“I don’t think that’s going to work, boss, especially if you’re distracted by Matsusaka steak,” Takamiya replied snarkily. “Anyway, I still don’t get how the mess crew managed to get a hold of all of this. We’re on a war footing and yet, here we are dining on some premium meat. I mean, I can live with the fact that Command is acknowledging our efforts in weapons and tech testing, but throwing a steak buffet for the entire flotilla? Talk about suspicious.”

“Hmm, I wonder,” Tamaki exclaimed as she idly moved the garnishing away from the meat. “I guess the rumor about the Chinese suing for peace is true after all, and Command is just throwing a bash for the troops?”

Takamiya shook her head. “Sounds like a flimsy excuse as well, boss. Just because the Chinese are giving up doesn’t mean—”

“Not enough pepper.”

Both senior witches were taken aback by the sudden outburst from Kaede. “What do you mean by that, Ensign?” Tamaki asked, still confused.

“This steak doesn’t have enough pepper,” the white-haired witch replied flatly. “The meat is slightly overcooked. The herbs don’t balance out with each other. It’s not very obvious, but you can notice it if you chew it slowly and let the juices simmer in your mouth.”

Tamaki and Takamiya looked at each other, not knowing what to say. Kaede, meanwhile, continued with her meal for a while, before belatedly adding, “I learned that from Katsuyo Kobayashi’s books.”

Takamiya, having recovered from the initial shock of hearing the little witch say more than three words, spoke up first. “Looks like you really put her words to heart. I guess you want to be a chef when you grow up?” Kaede merely nodded in reply.

Tamaki leaned forward. “So does this mean your marksmanship with a difficult-to-use scope was also honed by your time mulling over books? Some deep study into math and bullet drop compensation, perhaps?”

Kaede shook her head wordlessly before turning back to her meal. A little while later, she added, “A senior of ours taught us.”

Her interest piqued, Tamaki pressed on. “Can you tell us more about this senior of yours? She sounds like a really interesting person.”

Kaede slowly finished nibbling the piece of steak she had in her mouth before answering. “She helped Micchi and me settle down with academy life after we both came from our respective orphanages. She helped us learn everything that we know now. She was like a big sister to both of us, looking out for us while we went through academy together. And then one day…”

“Hold it,” Tamaki interrupted, pulling out her handkerchief and lightly wiping it below the younger witch’s eyes. “You were tearing up back there, you know.”

“Oh,” Kaede replied dully. After wiping her eyes lightly with the back of her hand, she resumed eating. She did not finish her meal, however, and before either of the older witches could say anything, she left, making her way out of the wardroom’s hatch.

“Way to dampen the good mood there boss,” Takamiya commented snidely.

Tamaki smirked at her subordinate. “Don’t get smart with me Erika; I’m sure you would’ve asked the same question if I didn’t.” Leaning back on her chair and placing her hands behind her head, she added, “I didn’t know she felt strongly about that topic. Sure her face didn’t show it, but those tears were more than enough indication.”

Takamiya nodded in agreement. “To be honest, that was the first time I saw the Ensign show another kind of emotion… for a given definition of emotion, anyway. I guess I’ll file that under the things I’m no longer allowed to say or ask to a new witch.”

“Yeah, me too,” Tamaki exclaimed. “I suppose you really can’t rush these kinds of things, huh?”

The redhead looked back on all that happened as she finished her meal. In retrospect, this was the first time Tamaki heard Ensign Kaede speak more than three words, ever. Sure, it all sounded plain and flat, but she could feel the emotion when the little witch talked about food and her senior back in the academy. Tamaki couldn’t get the image of Kaede tearing up when mentioning her senior out of her head, however.

“There has to be more of a story there,” the redhead thought to herself. “I just know it.”

IT SEEMS THE CHINESE ARE planning to negotiate peace with us, sir.

Well, well! I guess they finally realized how pointless it is to face us in open combat, eh? That makes it easier for us to complete the project, hmm?

Indeed sir. In my opinion, though, we’ve lost an opportunity to test our project outputs in their initial stages.

No, no, my dear protégé. This is but a minor setback. We can always find other opportunities for field tests. Speaking of, how is the Amaryllis?

No problems have been observed so far, sir. Everything is going according to schedule, and all the necessary conditions have been observed and ticked off.

Splendid! I guess it’s time we go ahead with phase two for the Amaryllis, yes?

Indeed sir.

Ah, to be honest with you, I really regret having to let the Amaryllis bloom like this. If possible, I’d rather have the seeds be planted somewhere else, but the current situation our country is in warrants such sacrifices.

Japan must undergo a great change if it is to survive in a brave new world…

… And we shall be the herald of that change. Good to see you’ve taken our creed to heart, my protégé! Now then, shall we proceed?

====================

And that should be everything. I hope I hit those scene breaks correctly. Sorry (not really) about the Seibah spam. Lurk never specified what images to post with the write up.
