Welcome to Exterminator Quest #4.2>You are Vincent Esperanza. In a previous life you were a silver-tongued manipulator who conned corporate plutocrats out of their vast fortunes. When you were finally caught the American legal system sentenced you to 20 years behind bars. For two long years you lived on a knife's edge until your sentence was purchased by the Global Exterminators Corporation, aka GEC.>After subjecting you to six months training, GEC sent you abroad to work in their understaffed Hong Kong branch HQ. In the libertarian free-for-all that is post-WW3 Hong Kong, you are tasked with exterminating the legions of mutant pests left behind by the untold thousands of chemical and biological munitions that were expended both here and on the mainland. Working for those who you once exploited is a bitter irony but you have no choice but to comply... at least until you can find a way to remove the bomb in your neck.Last thread ended early, Vincent had successfully loaded two mastiff sized bats into his GEC-issue van after tranquilizing them and healing his injuries as best he could. He was last seen surveying the area for shops and contemplating returning to that bats' nesting grounds within the roof of a nearby church to see if they had any offspring.Previous, improperly archived thread is still viewable here:>>>41435790Setting fluff:>http://pastebin.com/gGMy1KsGCharacter Sheet:>http://pastebin.com/2gx5bYkwRules:>http://pastebin.com/iJZVBT94Threads are archived here:>http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=exterminator%20quest
>>41505309You strap your wrangling stick to your back and stuff some bait and the screechbox in your pockets. Then you take a look around. The area is largely residential, so there aren't too many big shops. You note a 7-11 and a local pharmacy. There's also a toy store full of cheap toys.Your stomach grumbles as you think about 7-11's cheap Sausage Biscuits (tm). It has been a while since you last ate... but it's still tempting to just head on into the church and see if there are any babies you can take back for an additional bonus from GEC.>toy shop>pharmacy>7-11>forget it and head to the second floor of the church
>>41505332>>41505309How's everyone doing today by the way?
>>41505332>>7-11Ah yes food.
>>41506214You head down the block towards the big red-green-orange sign. Pushing past a door advertising $5 dollar personal pizzas you enter into a world of junk food and vice.Candy, coffee, cigarettes. Sausages and slushies. It's so hard to choose!>cigs>candy>slush>reheated meat biscuits>personal pizza>any combination of the aboveFeel free to pick a specific brand of anything by the way. Any stat bonuses derived here will be based on your choices and how/when you consume.
>>41506290>>reheated meat biscuits>>personal pizzaGetting savory here.
>>41506365You head up to the counter and ask the snub-nosed clerk to grab a personal pizza and a sausage biscuit from under the heat lamps. They duly retrieve them while you shell out the $7 dollars you owe.>Money: $2925You stack your purchases on top of one another and walk back outside, your shoulder twinging as you pull the door back. That was quite a wound you took earlier today...>eat everything in your van while it's warm>just eat the biscuit or the pizza, saving one for later>don't eat now, head to the church>don't eat now, head back to GEC HQ.
>>41506437>>just eat the biscuit or the pizza, saving one for laterMechanics to objectively terrible food? Lessee what they are.
>>41506504>garbage now, a little garbage laterYou unwrap the sausage biscuit as you walk back to the car. The gently toasted biscuit glistens with artificial non-stick coating and the flattened sausage patty lays tantalizingly limp underneath a similarly floppy eggwhite. After months of eating Chinese food, it's good to finally get back to your roots.>STR/STA [12/11], pool boost lasts 8 hours.>Awareness +1 for eight hours>Now you can either head to GEC, the church, or somewhere else in this area.
>>41506632Also, funds correction. I used an old total that was floating around in my head. You really have:>$2920
>>41506632>churchBabies.This time with hazmat suit lights on.
>>41506673Sated, you head towards the church.Looking up into the vast dark hole in the ceiling that the bats crawled out of, you activate your hazmat suits built-in flashlight. Wouldn't want to make the same mistake twice after all.You haul yourself up into the hole and poke around. The area is surprisingly spacious but you suppose it had to be to accomodate those two huge bats. It's also littered with bones. From what you can identify, it's mostly squirrels and birds though you do find what appears to be a child's skull mixed in with the other remains.Continuing to root through the debris, you find what appears to be a small bird-like nest. Birdlike, because rather than twigs and down, this nest is thatched together from bones and fur.Crawling around inside of it are two tiny baby bats, no bigger than your fist. They don't seem capable of flight yet and they're pretty adorable. You pick up the entire nest and make your way towards the exit when you feel a sudden twinge of... guilt. You look back at the human skull. Should you grab it and try to get it identified?>take it, someone out there might be looking for their child>don't take it>Guilt? What is this guilt?

>>41507091You grab the tiny cranium and leap back down to the second floor of the church.Something inside you is burning bright. Pride at a job well done perhaps. For the first time in your life, you're doing honest work and you're starting to worry you might like it.You make your way back to the van with the nest and delicately place the little ones next to their tranquilized parents. The skull goes in the passenger seat.>head to ScythCorp to turn the skull in>head to GEC first, you can drop the skull off later and you have live specimens in the back of your van that need to be properly detained before they wake up (in a few hours of course)
>>41507191>>head to GEC first, you can drop the skull off laterHaha yeah we can risk getting arrested as a convenient scapegoat after we do our job.
>>41507229>>41507191>Head home. It's only the late afternoon when you tell your automated chauffeur to take you back to GEC HQ. It's about an hours drive this time around. The van automatically pulls up to the specimen offload dock inside the garage. You can supervise the offload or head inside.>supervise, maybe head to the specimen lab after>go straight to devlinson for debrief
>>41507324>>supervise, maybe head to the specimen lab after
>>41507366>>41507324You decide that you'd like to watch these low ranking GEC goons as they unload your precious cargo. Two white-garbed GEC employees descend from the dock and open up the back of your van. You caution not to mishandle the bat that you already mishandled and they carefully remove the slack forms of both of the large bats. A third female employee gingerly picks up and carries away the nest. She seems quite enarmored with the baby bats, which squeak eagerly at her.The employees mention that the specimens will indeed be removed to the labs but that you are technically barred from accessing them as a lowly rookie exterminator. Perhaps Clarissa will be more helpful when you track her down.Turning back, you load up your equipment and head to the Exterminator's Armory where you drop it all in your locker. You also change out of your hazmat suit, although there's no hiding the enormous bite on your shoulder.Well, time to see Devlinson.(1/?)
>>41507547Devlinson is rummaging through the scatttered debris on the floor of his office when you walk in. He looks up in recognition of your arrival before standing up and clapping his hand on your shoulder.Ow."My favorite rookie! I'm so glad to see you made it back! And so early! Please, spare me your report for the moment, I just had a mission come in that I think you would just love."(2/2)>actually boss, I'm exhausted and injured. Eh, let's hear the next job. If it isn't time sensitive, we can have Vince go home.
>>41507762"Listen Devlinson, I didn't take down two goddamn werebats to come back here and have you blow off my debrief and poke my wounds. Whatever you've got better be worth my goddamn time."Your boss attempts to play down your reaction but he seems flustered by your sudden burst of anger. People must not stand up to him very much."Relax, rookie, relax. This is worth your time, don't worry. We recently got word of something skulking around in the backstreets of Kowloon. As show of good will to the community by GEC, we'd like like you to go down there tonight and nab it for us.""Tonight? Is it really necessary to do it tonight?""Look, I know you're hurting right now but I hear the thing isn't that big. I'll tack on a fifty dollar bonus on top of the $60 bonus you're getting for that breeding pair.">Sixty?! It was supposed to be seventy-five dollars! And I brought you a nest! >>41507957Goddamn, this guy is going to learn not to press your buttons if it kills him."You fuckin' fuck!" you start, feeling the blood rush to your face. You grab the front of Devlinson's shirt and pull his piggy face towards you so you can properly shower it with spittle."You prick! You piece of trash! I want my full seventy-five and then some!""But the second specimen had a broken-""I don't give a shit! I brought you a breeding pair, perfect condition wasn't part of the deal!"Your boss carefully disentangles himself from your grip. He dusts himself off and points to his neck."You're not really in a position to negotiate, you know."Oh yeah. Your anger dissipates, replaced by a twisting feeling in your gut. Devlinson sees it and grins, pleased by your sudden submission."You're right though, I did promise $75... and I'll throw in another $20 for the nest."Not bad."If you feel up to it, I'd still like you to check out that thing in Kowloon though, my higher-ups are VERY curious about it.">alright, I'll do it>eh, I've got a big bat bite in my shoulder, might be best to take a break and not push myself.

>>41508256>>41508201"Okay, I give in. Besides, I need that fifty, rent's coming up."Your boss nods understandingly."I had nightvision goggles, some additional tranks, and a fresh taser grid already put into your locker. I was just looking for the briefing that got handed down from on high but- oh."He quickly ducks under the desk and resurfaces with an unsealed white envelope."Here it is! Save your questions and look through this on your way there. Like I said, time is of the essence here if you want to beat Scyth and MedCorp."You accept the envelope and hustle back to the armory, where you yank all your previous equipment back out of your locker and grab the night-vision goggles and an additional bag of darts to add to the ones you've already got left. There's also a brand new GEC issue haz-mat suit to replace your punctured one.>new total: 13 trank darts. Then you run to the elevator and head down to the garage so you can get on your way.(1/2)
Rolled 4 (1d4)>>41508740Getting into your van, you open up the report and begin to skim. Sightings of a mysterious quadraped have occurred all around Kowloon. Descriptions vary but the consensus seems to be that the creature is approximately cat sized and may or may not fly, although you suppose it could just be making some dramatic leaps. It's apparently nocturnal and is generally seen on rooftops. A few accounts have it snatching birds out of the air from atop power lines.Unfortunately, the sightings seem to be spread out all over Kowloon. This could mean that there's more than one of these things on the loose or that it is highly mobile. Right now you're just about in the western center of Kowloon, Mong Kok. You're only a little ways south of boundary street, so you could try and search the surrounding area. Alternately you could:>Head North, towards Lion's Rock Mountain>Head East, towards the more industrial area of New Kowloon>Head South, towards the docks
Rolled 1 (1d2)>>41508928You guys pick a locale and I will return in about 15 minutes or so.
>>41508928>>Head East, towards the more industrial area of New Kowloon>rollingUhoh. Can't spell "quadraped" without "raped".
>>41509239You decide to head to New Kowloon, where you hope that somewhere in the dense mix of tall industrial structures and residential buildings you'll be able to find a creature that apparently adores high places.(1/2)
Rolled 25 (1d30)>>41509329Arriving in San Po Kang, you find yourself surrounded by industrial structures, ramshackle shanty towns, and skyscrapers.Skyscrapers are obviously very tall but you doubt the creature lives *that* high up so you might have more luck hunting through a shantytown. A factory is also a potential habitat for the creature but likely contains many environmental hazards. How would you like to focus your search?>pick a factory and try and infiltrate it>search through a shanty town>con your way into a skyscraper
>>41509421>>search through a shanty townOh boy.
>>41509459You park your van and make your way into the tight alleyways that New Kowloon was supposed to do away with. You take with you your bag, packed with your trank gun, your poison bait, your wrangling stick, the fresh haz-mat suit, and your new nightvision goggles... Eventually you find yourself walking beneath a makeshift arcade, or a series of gerryrigged arches supporting sheets of corrugated tin. It getting dark and smoking Kowloon natives seem to be crouched around every corner. A few stand around flicking their lighters or, in some cases, knives. Your corporate uniform earns you some nasty looks, and you make a mental note that maybe you should consider packing some more casual clothes to bring to work in the morning. Finally, you come to a dead end with some wrecked cars. You can climb up these and try and get a look at the surrounding area or continue to wander around on the ground level, hunting for the creature near dumpsters or other potential food sources.>climb on up>continue the search down here.
>>41509640>>climb on upI guess this is what we came for, as dangerous as it is.Now's a good time to put on the goggles?
>>41509640>climb on up
>>41509697>>41509640You climb atop the cars and then carefully step across the rapidly degrading tin roofs and terraces until you can go no higher. The view isn't fantastic but it is much improved when you slip on the night-vision goggles. As you adjust them, you accidentally twist a knob on the side and your vision goes dark for just a second before coming back as red-blue acidscape. You notice a large number of figures standing, sitting, and eating in the buildings all around you. Looks like you have a heat vision mode.>start moving across the roofs, scanning as much ground as you can with your heatvision>stick to basic nightvision, you don't want to miss some terrain detail and fall to your death>get back down to ground level, you'll just use your goggles down there
>>41509916Forgot my pic.
>>41509916>>stick to basic nightvision, you don't want to miss some terrain detail and fall to your deathAlthough you can stand still at times and do a heat vision sweep.
>>41509954You move quickly across the roofs with your basic nightvision and give the surrounding areas heat vision sweeps where appropriate. You can't help but feel like you're intruding a bit on people's private lives as you peer into their apartments to see them in their most secluded moments. You also can't help being a bit shocked by the amount of sex everyone around here is having.Eventually you do see something interesting, but it's not a quadruped.(1/2)
>>41510059Looks like there's a small team of professional operators, probably Scyths, moving around underneath you. It looks like they're doing what they think is a stealthy sweep of the area, although moving around with their assault rifles drawn is probably not the stealthiest they could be. You do a quick count and find that there's only 4 of them. They might be here for the same thing you are or they might be here on unrelated business. Of course, it seems unlikely that they'd be in a slummy area like this without a lucrative reason...>follow them sneakily (roll 3d6+1 against a 10)>get away from these guys, they're gun nuts and they'll probably cap you>get in position to cap them yourself with your trank gun>write-in
Rolled 4, 2, 4 + 1 = 11 (3d6 + 1)>>41510197>>follow them sneakily (roll 3d6+1 against a 10)Outnumbered here, can we tranq them all before they get us?
>>41510226>sneaky follow successHeh.
>>41510333You stick to the shadows and try to keep pace with these would-be Scyths as they move through the streets below. It's not hard, as the terrain is much less dense up here as it is down there, but you still have to be careful not to take any wrong steps, which requires switching in and out of thermal vision and momentarily losing LOS on the operators.During one such switch, gunshots suddenly breakout and bullets riddle the roof just a few feet in front of you. At first you think that they're shooting at you but it soon becomes apparent that they're firing wildly. You get to cover and turn your thermal vision back on but by then it's already too late. All the operators are laying on their backs in an alleyway somewhere below you, most likely dead. You don't see any obvious heat signatures for what could have done it either.>get closer, try and see what state these guys are in>keep your distance and move on, you don't want to find out what did this>ready something from your inventory>write-in to choose if you approach in nightvision or thermal vision
>>41510460>>ready something from your inventoryGonna need tranq gun.
>>41510460approach in nightvision, since no apparent heat signature.
>>41510562You switch back to night vision and pull your trank gun out of your bag before moving up as quietly as you can. Gazing down on the scne below, you see 2 relatively upright shapes standing over the fallen operators. They're actually a little big bigger than the reports made them sound, probably about three feet tall. They do have four legs which lead up to a long abdomen, but there is also an upright thorax with two scissor-like arms attached, much like the arms of a mantis. Definitely some kind of insect.Interestingly, they don't seem to be consuming the operators. In fact, they're just standing there and you have a potentially clear shot.>line one of them up in your sights and fire (roll 3d6 to beat an 11)>don't take the shot, continue to observe>shoot all those operators while they're down, make sure they're really out of comission>write-in>Remember, you still have your wrangling stick and poisonous bait.

>>41510783>don't take the shot, continue to observe
>>41510973>>41510873You opt not to shoot though you keep both of the mantises you're aware of in your sights. They don't stand around for long. After a few seconds the two that you see both take off in massive leaps, landing several rooftops away from you and heading north-west, towards the darkly forested mountains on the horizon. You're just about to move when you hear a thud behind you. Turning to face the noise, you find yourself within ten feet of yet anothr mantis. It seems to be watching your carefully.>take the shot! (3d6 to beat a 11, aim can be steadied with a +1 if you spend two nerve points)>stay still, hope it doesn't notice you>throw it the your bag of poisonous bait>Try and go for your wrangling stick>Write-in
>>41511117>throw it the your bag of poisonous bait
>>41511117Yep, they're intelligent.>>throw it the your bag of poisonous baitLessee how intelligent.I figured mountains might count as high places, but it didn't seem like that's where they'd find prey.
>>41511243>>41511182You reach down and yank the sack of bait from your larger equipment bag. Opening it, you give it a gentle toss and round meaty pellets immediately spill out. The mantis draws back and stretches out it's two long frontal arms, apparently in an attempt to intimidate you but is quickly distracted by the odor of the pellets.Suddenly, it impales on on one of its arms and brings the pellet towards its mandibles. It takes surprisingly small bites, as though curious about the bait but tiny bites are all the expert chemical engineers at GEC ever needed. It's a matter of seconds before the mantis begins to jerk and shake, eventually contracting all its limbs as its muscles seize.Congratulations! You now have one dead specimen!>carry the damn thing back to your van>finally go down and check on those guys in the alley now that all the threats you're aware of have been neutralized>closely investigate the creatures corpse
>>41511441>>closely investigate the creatures corpse>>finally go down and check on those guys in the alley now that all the threats you're aware of have been neutralized
>>41511492Curiosity quickly gets the best of you and you get down on your knees to better take a look at this "mantis" and its' anatomy. The first thing you notice is how densely armored the upper body is. The head and thorax both seem to be covered in plates thick brown chitin and its eyes are small and forward facing in the otherwise triangular head. Two long and flowing antennae also jut out of either side of the head and seem to be tipped with small flowery barbs, you assume either for pheremone detection or emission. The long "mantis" arms lack the serrated inner elbow of a normal mantis. Instead, they seem to have sharp hollow tips at their ends, probably for injecting some kind of poison into their prey. You figure you'll find out how deadly in a few moments. Finally, the underside of the creature's abdomen seems to be its only unarmored and soft place. You're not sure how you would manage to flip one of these guys over, but it would probably be your best bet if you had to deliver a killing blow.Once your investigation is complete, you climb down to check on those poor suckers in the alleyway below.(1/2)
>>41511652Well, a cursory inspection suggests that all these guys are dead. The thing is, they all have gaping penetration wounds, so it looks like your poison theory is being thrown into some doubt. While it would probably be impractical to carry any of them back with you, you could probably loot them for some sweet tacticool gear.>loot, these guys don't need their stuff anymore and you can always sell it off>don't let anyone know you were even here, just grab your bug and go

>>41511995>get goingYou clamber back up to the roof and gather up your bug. It's surprisingly light. The trip back to your car takes just fifteen minutes, as traversing these slums via the roofs is actually much more direct than wandering through them on foot. >>41512248With the mantis loaded into the back of your van, you climb into the drivers seat and set the destination as Lion's Rock.Although you can clearly see the mountain even in the dark, the van's onboard navigator estimates a trip duration of about 35 minutes in current traffic conditions. You sigh heavily and turn on the radio for eine kleine nachtmusik. Unfortunately, all the good american oldies stations have gone to sleep and all that's left are the few remaining Chinese stations.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVGK9BH4vOEIt's a bit of an odd thing to listen to with a giant dead mantis in the back of your van, but you have to admit it's pretty relaxing. You take advantage of the downtime to pack your taser grid into your equipment bag, replacing the bait you expended, and you start to look at the several hours hours old personal pizza that's been sitting next to a child's skull in your passenger seat with hungry eyes.It is now about 10:30 pm.>eat the pizza>just drive on in peace>re-arrange your equipment in some other way

>>41512620You'd forgotten how large and craggy Lion Rock was. >>41512917>>41512879You calm yourself and take a careful look around for anything that moves on the cliffside. You start from the bottom and work your way up, eventually locating a lone mantis on a ledge not that far down from where you are now. It appears to be in a hunting pose of some sort.>try and lower yourself down to the ledge without being noticed (3d6 to beat a 12, boostable with STR/STA)>try and crush or pin it with a heavy rock (3d6 to beat a 9, boostable with STR/STA)>take a shot at it with your tranq gun, hope to penetrate the plates (3d6 to beat a 16, boostable with nerves)>observe>write-inRemember, all boosts only add a plus 1.

>>41513030My addled mind is only now realizing that I should be giving you those choices to vote on and then having everyone roll, but I think that's for the next thread.I guess I'm learning to be a less terrible QM everyday.
>>41513076Probably smart. The rolls thing I mean, too bad about the stopping.
>>41505309You forgot to add your twitter to the OP copypasta. When's next thread?
>>41513110Not stopping now, you're gonna get one last update here and then I'll have to stop to sleep for volunteering tomorrow.
>>41513030You manage to make out decent enough handholds in the darkness that you believe you can make your way to the mantis without being spotted. They way is treacherous and you almost lose your grip several times but you manage to stealthily make it to an opportune spot right under the bug's nose, or nose equivalent. Now all that's needed is a quick shot from your spear or trank gun...>END THREAD>>41513133Twiiter is @qmsimmons. I should be in the QM directory soonish.Next quest thread will hopefully run this wednesday, possibly a little earlier though, around 3 or 4 pm EST.
>>41513200Neat. Thanks for running. You're pretty quick on the updates.
>>41513321Thanks, I thought I was moving sort of slow in the previous threads so I tried to trim down my writing style a little and fit my breaks in as organically as possible. It worked pretty well, all things considered.
