There is a burst of radiation, and the Cortez returns to your mind. A pod within the New Port system moves to intercept, and you rejoin Michael within his quarters, your drones informing you of the events you had missed.

Michael slept through nearly the entire journey, falling fast asleep almost as soon as you had left his mind. He holds himself in a loose ball beneath the tight covers of his hammock with his head resting on your spectral form’s illusory lap. He is half awake when there is a sudden beep from one of his bags. Michael shuts his eyes tightly and lets out a frustrated groan as he reaches for the bag, your figure vanishing into the pillow it actually was.

"Yes." He says flatly.

"Agent Devon, are you sleeping? It's the middle of the day!" It's the voice of Killinger. The Cortez had an A-class relay, Michael remembers. Even in the expanse, there is no escape. He looks to a clock, it shows two times, the top one labled 'Gemini Subjective' and the lower one 'shipboard subjective'.

"Sir, we just came out of warp. It's hardly oh-five hundred."

"Oh, sorry. Wait, Jesus man, just what kind of ship did you get for that kind of warp-lag?"

"A mail runner. Used to be a smuggling ship. Did you need something, sir?" Killinger is somewhat take aback for a moment.

"I need you to send some of the data you had on this election cycle to my campaign manager. Something's just come up and it's a load of bullshit. A goddamn Valen rep just showed up, in person. Somber pool, I think was his name." Michael thinks for a moment.

"Her."

"It's mating season. Somber was male last season."

After several short attempts to fall back asleep, Michael glances to the door, where you stand expectantly. He forces himself up, briefly fighting against the straps of the low-G hammock before finding the release and clumsily flopping to the floor. Your fly sits on the ground inches from his face as he lands in slow motion, making the fall not nearly as painful as it is embarrassing. It tilts its head several times, cleaning its antennae with its claws.

"Don't mock me." He says to it dryly. "I bet you don't even need sleep." The fly lets out a soft squeak and it hops atop his head, then takes flight. He sighs before getting himself up, slowly and carefully, and then skipping awkwardly to the door.

The door slides open and he skips out, promptly running into a short, stout looking man almost half his size and twice his mass, bouncing off the small bundle of muscles like a ball against a brick wall. He hits the door just as it closes and starts into a spin when the man grips him by the collar.

"Whoa there, cowboy." He says with a laugh as he plants Michael back on his feet as if propping up a styrofoam cutout. "Skip, don't hop or jump. That's a good way to kiss the deck and not much else. Name's Theodore, Theodore Calhoun, and I'd say you're the gov'ment man we're bringing judging by your foot work, no offense."

The man is covered in hair, and his shoulders are nearly as wide as he is tall, with arms as thick as tree trunks and a wafting scent of whisky and oil. He's face is covered in a large beard that reaches his chest, and he is holding his clothes under his arm, standing naked save for a towel.

"If you're planning on a shower, it's got room for plenty. No room for privacy on a ship this size." He lets out a hearty, bellowing laugh. "But if ya like I can give you first dibs, at least till you get yourself sorted."

"Uh, thank's. My name's Michael Devon."

They shake hands, and Michael is sent briefly airborne. Theodore then bounds into the air with the grace of a bird, vanishing into the ladder's tube. Michael quickly gathers his things and heads for the shower.

As Michael, clean and dressed, skips from the shower, he is nearly run over by Calhoun's stride as he rushes in. Michael quickly adjusts himself, taking pride in his ability to stay upright, and makes his way to the rec room. There is a bulkhead separating each segment of the hab module, so that in the event of a hull breach only a portion would suffer decompression. He worms his way through the airlock as it spins open and finds a figure behind an old fashioned looking flat screen monitor, with a strange clacking sound of an analog keyboard.

As the door spins shut with a hiss behind him he hears a sharp click and a hiss that quickly shifts to a growl. An eyeless creature hauls itself up over the back of a chair, pointing its blank, gaunt face at him like a weapon. Its jaw opens sideways, and the lower jaw splits again, revealing rows of razor sharp teeth and a set of dexterous looking mandibles set along the lower two jaws. They click as they rub against each other, a green, syrupy venom dripping from a set of fangs along the end. Michael lunges back, hitting the wall and landing on the ground almost faster then the gravity should allow. A sharp whistle from behind the antique computer seems to put the creature at ease.

"Coco." He says softly as he holds out a hand. It swiftly lunges back to its master and presses its featureless face against his palm. Its small mane of thick, cartilage-like fibers jiggle in the air with glee and it nuzzles itself under his arm, resting its head in his lap as he scratches its lower jaws. Its hind leg wiggles.

Michael slowly pulls himself back to his feet, still pressed against the wall.

"They track by sound and scent, by the way. He can hear your heartbeat. It's making him nervous."

"Making him nervous?" Michael says. "How they let that thing on the ship?"

"Don't be silly, I'd never go anywhere without my Coco." The man says. He quickly looks at his computer. "You must be agent Devon. I'm Nathan, it's a pleasure." He says. "Things really must be important if the Union was willing to let me out."

"Oh no, I just read your file. I have it right here if you want to look it over. Nabbed it before we hit warp and had it decrypting ever since. Only just finished about an hour ago, actually."

The man turns to Michael, sizing him up as he sucks from the container of processed food. He stands a full head over Michael, with a shaved head and a square, pallid face that looks like it was carved from marble. His arms are covered in the familiar ports and surgical scars of a drop trooper, as well as a number of additional scars that cover his arms like a resume.

"Shade hounds are pussies. It's scared of anything that's not afraid of it." He takes another sip of his meal. "You look scared shitless." He turns to Nathan and asks, "Hey, Decker, who's the beanbag?"

"Special agent Michael Devon, from BFI. He's the reason we're all here." He says as he returns to his computer. The drop trooper turns back to Michael.

"I'm not impressed." He says, and he slowly sits into a foam couch that struggles to secure him. "Name's Corporal Mauser." He says. You expect something to follow up but he simply sucks the bag of liquid steak dry in silence.

The hound sends a thin tongue whipping out of its mouth, sending up its face like a windshield wiper, and it lets out a small grumble of satisfaction, exhaling an odor of yogurt and dead cat in the process. Michael turns to Mauser.

"I do." He says. Michael waits for an elaboration that never comes.

"Conrad." He says. You feel like you're pulling teeth.

"Corporal Mauser, how did you end up here, exactly?" The man blinks.

"I was ordered here. I am here to protect you from physical harm, especially against a particular drop trooper." He stands up, crushing the empty can in his hand absentmindedly. "I am here to do a job, and I intend to do it, but with all due respect, agent Devon, I am not your friend."

He proceeds to walk to the door, passing through with a quick stride. As the door spins shut Nathan looks to Michael.

"Don't take it personally, he doesn't seem to like anyone. Just an asshole like that." He types out something on his keyboard and spins the computer around. "Now, if you want to know about anyone on the ship, you just ask me." He says, pointing to Mauser's file. "Says here he's a decorated drop trooper. A very, very decorated drop trooper. His file reads like a war novel and his resume is big enough to fill a cemetery." Nathan leans in close. "And to top it off, I heard, can't confirm but heard, he once killed a uh..." He pantomimes several jerky, robotic movements and spins his finger beside his head. "You know, coo coo clockwork killbot?"

"Long story short, someone wanted to bring a ship down on a city on Eridani. Conrad ended up being the only guy between the ship's controls and whoever wanted to bring it down. The ship was destroyed by the end of it, and it crashed a few kilometers off its mark. According to the story, he was the only survivor." He shrugs innocently. "But it's just a tall tale. A legend bigger then the man, which is surprising in this case."

Michael looks back to the hatchway through which Conrad exited. "Good story." He says. "I guess I'll see you later then." and he walks to a ladder hatchway, carefully making his way to the spine of the ship.

The door announces Michael's arrival with a loud and unnecessary whooshing sound as it closes and the commander spins on her heels with a motion so fluid you could swear she was standing in full gravity.

"Agent Devon. I assume you slept well. Warp lag can be hard on people. Next time we plot a course I'll be sure to let you know the estimated dilation so you can set your schedule accordingly. We will be arriving at Bedrock soon, although local debris clouds are slowing our approach. Fortunately the Cortez is a fine ship, top of the line and fastest in her class. We will arrive ahead of schedule despite the delay."

I don't think he'd be capable of detecting Theseus in general, but he might be able to detect a slight hiccup, or stutter, in the system, as he overwrites himself into the system.

He just has to not be paying attention when it happens. Or be parasited.

Asking the captain about surveillance in the ship and around the ship would be suspicious.

But asking Decker about how much he's accessing the ship surveillance feeds that he obviously has already accessed for himself, that's a much better level of sleaze. Maybe bring that up later.

The lone fly's senses should be able to detect all the cameras' and mics' positioning.

But it can't risk the shade hound smelling it, so having it ride in Michael's pocket as he does a round of the ship to detect how everything is wired together isn't viable.

In fact, I would not be surprised if that was not even his real name. He has a rap sheet across the Union, wanted for all manner of petty crimes, fraud, theft, scams, pyramid schemes, you name it. Quite frankly, he belongs in a prison, not the Cortez. He has yet to gain an arrest warrant in the expanse yet, and hopefully we can get to him before he fixes that."

It's front wheels are a set of spheres held in front of it, with a rubber rim on one side and a set of thrusters on the other, and it promptly takes to the air vertically on a stream of magnetically charged air. Your flies follow, attaching to the rear bumper as it takes flight.

The doctor's home is in an impressive estate, a large high-rise community with gardens set along the top floor which overflow and dangle over the edge in the form of thick vines. The building itself has a waterfall built along the side cascading to a pool bellow, and the main courtyard offers a varying sports field, using holograms and smart-pavement to turn the blank open courtyard into any number of sporting arenas. It is a tennis court at the moment, and you can see several people playing a game as the spinner touches down on the roof of the parking garage. As the doctor exist the vehicle and makes his way to the elevator, the roof opens and pulls the spinner into the rotating storage bay bellow.

Your flies follow the doctor with the practiced skill of far more dangerous infiltrations than this, and find his apartment on the 28th floor. For your flies, it is simply to maneuver through the vents and the cramped maintenance passageways, but the estate is walled off, secured with a gate and several guards. Strict soliciting signs are posted, and the guards themselves are armed, possibly members of a government security branch, or at least commissioned by the Union.

I presumed all of them, aside from a few that'd get plasma casters. Firesprays are excellent for hive defense, ship defense, ship boarding, bunker clearing...and pretty much everything else the heavy warriors were designed to be good at.

Bonus points: fire sprays will fuck with the Scavs vision in shipboard engagements.

Those are our large drones, particularly the Smith /attempted/ to wreck a Collossus. He and his drop trooper bodyguard were promptly melted for his trouble.

We didn't have the tech to put Heavy Armor on medium sized drones at that time, which is what Heavy Warriors are. Heavy Warriors are essentially hive Drop Troopers, but less able to operate in open areas because they lack jetpacks and other mobility boosters.

Also correct. In general, all of your units and ships are cheaper and build faster then the human equivalent, and because your drones and ships can communicate so perfectly, they benefit from numbers far more then any other species.

It also plays into the general moralities of other races. Humans hold great value in their lives, so they go to great expense to equip their units. You can just replace any lost drones in a day.
