Gilliam looks over the cargo manifest again, for the third time. The workers grumble around him as they stand about the crates waiting to finish unpacking.

“This isn’t right.” He says, again for the third time. He looks to the worker nearest to him who simply shrugs, tossing out his arms as if washing his hands of the problem.

“What do you want us to do about it? That’s all that came in on the plane, and everything on the manifest is accounted for.” He says.

“Yes, but there’s some items missing. I’d say about three subjects.” Gilliam’s tone is sharp, and the worker slaps the crate next to him shut.

“Not my damn problem. They weren’t on the plane, and their not on the manifest. Try checking the passenger list.” Gilliam tosses the data pad to a desk as the worker hauls the crate away.

“How do you misplace three live test subjects? How?” He yells. The worker jerks the trolley and a light jingling comes from the crate that makes Gilliam’s blood run cold.

“I was about to ask you the same damn thing. If it’s not on the manifest, It’s not my damn problem.”

Interesting. I wonder why Jackob and Lyle consume so many more nutrients than Dillion does. Maybe it's the augs?

Speaking of Jackob, before we wake him up I was wondering if we could have a little chat with him telepathically through the bio-tank neural interface. We could offer him a symbiote then if he's interested, which he was earlier, and that would do a lot to ensure he stays in one piece mentally and physically when we let him go.

Economic Structures
>Orbital solar array – A station placed in orbit of the local star equipped with a membrane of photosynthetic cells several kilometers in diameter capable of producing a steady stream of nutrient income. Provides 1000N per day total (5,000N 5,000M
>Harvester Dock – A large pier built along the shore overlooking the spore-producing ocean film that serves as an unloading area for Harvester drones, and contains pipelines to pump collected raw nutrients to the hive’s awaiting processing facilities, includes a single Harvester which is covered by the cost and upkeep of the dock. Provides 500N per day total (38N 50M)
>Orbital electroponic station – An orbital instillation built near a large source of hydrogen used to fuel a large fusion core, which in turn provides electrical power to a contained algae farm facility. Must be built in orbit of a gas giant. Provides +500N per day and doubles as a gas mining facility, refueling the tritium stores of any ships in the system. (1000M)
>Algae Farm – A carved out space used to utilize Leeland’s natural electrical field to cultivate food. +100N per day, 1 worker to maintain.
>Hydroponic platform – A floating greenhouse platform used to grow farmland through hydroponics that can only be built on or near water with open access to plentiful sunlight. Each greenhouse platform supports roughly one hectare and requires a single worker to tend the crop and maintain the platform. Multiple platforms can be connected together to create fields of floating farmland. +200N per day, 1 worker to maintain.

>Filter towers – A large underwater pylon built to extract raw nutrients from the microbial life of the surrounding ecosystem. Can only be used on planets with bountiful biospheres and deep oceans capable of supporting large amounts of microbes. Provides between 100 and 500 N per day, depending on the local environment. (500M)
>Capillary Tower – This massive organic space elevator offers a number of logistical and economic advantages, despite its drastic up front cost and fragile nature. Shuttles or space craft are no longer needed to move resources from the surface to orbital structures, freeing shuttles for more important tasks. The counterweight station serves as a center for construction, with 4 docking pylons included on the structure to repair and build ships, while gaining a bonus to capital ship construction time due to the speedy nature with which resources arrive from the surface. The Capillary Tower can also spread hive creep and extract resources at an increased rate, spreading roots deep into the crust to bring up resources directly into orbit, allowing you to consume a planet much more quickly than normal. A Hive ship can construct a Capillary Tower if given the time and resources to do so, deploying one after 3 full days, after which it becomes the counterweight station, and must remain stationary until it detaches and destroys the tower to move. A Hive ship deployed in this way does not have access to its spinal weapons, but can use other features as normal. A planet can hold a max of 4 Capillary Towers along its equator. For each one, planetary mining or over harvest activities are doubled. (50,000N 500,000M)

Finished Research

>Psionic reading
By further tuning your senses to ambient tachyonic fields and focusing small bursts of psionics, you can actually gather meaningful data from a creatures mind from a distance. Any creature you are aware of within 50 meters of a medium or advanced relay can be targeted, gathering surface thoughts and emotions from the creature. There is a chance the target will sense the reading, manifesting as a feeling of paranoia and the illusion of distant sounds and voices. The more aware the target is of your attempt, the greater the chance for the target to sense the reading. If the target is fully aware of your capability and intent, it may attempt to resist the reading.

>Kata
Using the data gathered from your thinkers observations of enemy actions, your clones and non-hive agents implanted with a parasite or connected to your network can now respond instinctively to a wide range of combat situations with the same reflexes and devastating efficiency of your warriors, granting a boost to general performance in combat.

New Research Unlocked

Advanced Psionic Reading
Slow
With your new abilities growing, you continue to hone and develop more advanced methods of using your psionic network. Your thinkers believe that with more practice they should be able to delve deeper into the minds of non-hive life, digging past surface thoughts and emotions and into more detailed pieces of information without resorting to invasive neural interfaces.

Psionic Imprinting
Medium
The next logical step from psionic reading, your thinkers believe that if you can detect the thoughts of others, you may be able to alter them as well. Further study is needed to determine the extent of this potential ability.

Woot Hive queen quest, and finally I can present my conspiracy, may I present operation Sherlock.

We currently have killings suspecting 3rd party involvement, and a detective looking for some convicts were protecting. Also killinger knows of a unknown 3rd party attacking the confederation. We can use this to give the scavengers on a silver platter.

We just need a few things

3x scav soldier clones (with gear)
1x scav leader (with gear)
1x scav station
Assorted wanted clones (lee and co)
Lyle
1x nuclear WMD
1x scavenger jump drive
We need to fit the scavenger drive to lyles ship and construct this base.

Our compromised union guy will find this base in the expanse. He will board and find resistance from turrets and the scavenger guards. At the end of this will be Lyle and the refugees. They will attempt to escape as Lyle makes his stand. As soon as things go against lyles way he will set the station to blow and escape into his ship. They will use the scav drive to escape towards scavenger space, which they'll win the flight from because of the superior tech.

The only risked asset is Lyle. The intended outcome will raise our agents rep with killinger and paint the scavengers as the mysterious third party.

Current Research

>Plasma Assault Cannon
Fast
Your thinkers believe it would be rather easy to scale up the plasma cannon, using the same principles, but on a similar scale as the Rotary Stinger or Thorn Cannon, turning a powerful anti-armor weapon into a direct fire siege weapon that would likely make for a powerful bunker buster and anti-structure weapon.

>Micro rocket
Fast
A miniaturized, unguided missile that utilizes a small amount of propellant to maintain its trajectory and boost its velocity before embedding itself within the target and detonating for maximum damage. The rocket itself is a form of smart ordinance, and can be set to detonate at a predetermined time, such as after penetrating a wall or door, or within a certain range of a target, or within the target. The rocket deals more damage at longer range, but infers a penalty to accuracy and rate of fire.

>Auto-harvest pods
Medium
A number of pods that can be placed within some ships, allowing them to spread hive spores over an enemy planet when destroyed. These pods could, theoretically, also be launched from drop pods for a similar effect.

>High-altitude spore dispersal
Medium
By spraying modified hive spores from a capillary tower at high altitude, the tower gains the ability to spread hive creep several magnitudes faster than any other method you have, contaminating the surface of an entire hemisphere in a mere day, although the creep itself grows at normal speed. The spores are visible as a greenish fog that permeates the atmosphere, especially around the tower itself, and is toxic to non-hive life, forcing any enemies of the hive to make use of rebreathers or air filters. The spores can be made to carry other chemicals or biological agents.
>>
>>41486632
Who would he reveal that information to at this point? Hell, we wouldn't even need to explicitly tell him what it is. Just an additional implant that keeps him in constant telepathic contact with the hive (in a connection not unlike he is currently experiencing) and can heal gaping wounds in real time.

>Atmospheric static generator
Medium
By utilizing the natural friction of a sufficiently dense atmosphere against the surface of a capillary tower, the tower can be made to generate energy to feed itself and reduce its upkeep cost.

>Rip Drive
Medium
A powerful, and accurate drive system, it does not move the equipped ship, but allows the ship to rip open a hole in spacetime, creating something akin to an artificial wormhole that bridges the ship's current location with a location of its choosing within its range. This allows not only the ship to move through the rupture, but also allows it to open ruptures for other craft, allowing for the deployment of sub-light craft over vast interstellar distances.

>Deep Core Mining
Slow
Taking planetary mining to the logical extreme, your thinkers believe that your hive infrastructure, if spread across the surface of a world and given enough time, would be able to consume the ferrous metal core of a planet itself.

>Ship grapple
Medium
A simple idea at heart; throw a hook at the target and reel it in. When you take into account the relative speeds and raw kinetic forces involved in such an action, however, it quickly stops being so simple. Complex and highly durable cables and pulleys must be developed, as well as specialized bulkheads to prevent ripping the ship in two. The result, however, should be interesting, if a bit insane.

>Ram
Medium
The concept of ramming in ship to ship combat is simple and straight forward. Doing so without obliterating your own ship, however, is a far more complex skill to master that requires numerous alterations to ship design philosophy and a willful lack of common sense. The Scavengers appear to be insane enough to have thought such a strategy useful in space combat, and are stubborn enough to perfect it. The study and extensive testing of the design of the ram should allow you to develop something similar for your own ships.
>>
>>41486668
Adding onto this, this constructed station should be somewhere remote in a gas giant system, it should be a small gas harvesting station/ "monitoring post", it will be scavenger in everything except actual ownership and function. They will be able to salvage very little and as such be unable to look deep enough to actually find anything compromising, but should be able to loot just enough to confirm that scavengers are behind this all. If we pit killinger into a shadow war with those enemies we do everyone a solid. We can even start using scavengers to run our errands for us, so if they get caught they reinforce killingers conspiracy theories.

>Artificial gravity plating
Medium
By utilizing insignificant amounts of antimatter to create unfocused gravitational fields, and then directing them through the gravity plating into a single direction, the internal structure of a ship can be granted a small amount of artificial gravity. White the direction of the gravity can be changed at will, or turned off, it lacks the resources and energy to project a field capable of directly causing injury

>Gravity thrusters
Slow
Similar in function to your Skid drive, the Gravity thrusters essentially surf along pre-existing gravity fields, increasing their performance when in close proximity to major sources of gravitational pull, be it a large celestial body, a star, a planet, an exceptionally large structure or group of structures, or the core of a gravity drive. While in deep space it becomes less effective, the law of universal gravitation means it never becomes totally useless, and when in close proximity to a powerful gravity source it should outperform most other thruster designs with ease.

>Shield miniaturization
Medium
With your new understanding, previously unknown aspects of standard shield technology can be seen in a new light, indicating a small overlap between it and gravitational manipulation technology. By using newly developed technology, your thinkers suspect that they may be able to create a more compact, but less powerful shield system.

>Photonic microstructures
Slow
The useful applications of manipulating massive photonic molecules are many, and your preliminary studies indicate that you may be able to develop more practical uses beyond the blaster, especially in the field of energy shielding.

Clever. Very clever. I can get definitely get behind a plan like this. The only problem with it is that we don't have any access at all to scav FTL drive, but we could fix that while the clones are maturing. So why don't we get our captured scavs to infiltrate their fleet for us? We could start a new genestealer cult there!

>Nausea field
Slow
A rather interesting side effect first noticed with your Blink drive, but now weaponized to great effect as a defensive measure. You should be able to enhance your medium and advanced relays to emit a wave of sickening nausea in a radius around it, causing effected subjects to feel increasing levels of both physical and mental uneasiness, causing feelings of dread and queasiness.

>Solid State Teleportation
Slow
While standard quantum systems allow for instantaneous transportation of data, this technology would allow for essentially the instantaneous transport of matter. The matter in question would be disassembled into individual particles and transported in much the same way as bits of data through a quantum relay, and then assembled on the other side. Due to the nature of the process, only simple objects such as raw resources could survive teleportation. This should allow for the transportation of resources across hive space without the need to delegate ships to serve as trade vessels.

>Quantum Tuning
Medium
While current quantum computing technology requires the relays be built to accommodate one another, this technology should allow you to quickly attune pre-existing devices for one another when in proximity. Your thinkers suspect more opportunities to open up after further research is done. You suspect Theseus would greatly appreciate such a technology, if he does not already poses it.

>Psionic Cannon prototype
Very slow/Very dangerous
Detailed accounts of several experiments show the slow progress of Project Godsplitter. The cannon itself is highly volatile, and even the smallest miscalculation often results in the destruction of the ship, as well as any nearby craft. It can only be equipped to a Hive ship's spinal mount, and requires a functional Void Shard as ammunition. At least a dozen testing sizes were atomized in testing the weapon, and in the end it appears The Gardener never quite perfected it.

We already have the skid drive, which is the tech I'm referring to. The big problem is that the station has to actually look like a scavenger station. The good news is with the nuclear bomb that lyle will ""have"" with him (supported by the intel on him), they will only get scrap metal and electronics, which will be mostly fried anyway. We should leave just enough scavenger shit in the open for them to grab while running. Also unlike the former clone plans.

>>41486847
Killinger doesn't know the scavengers MO. If we run the scavenger "black ops" division we can easily kick there ass.

>>41486865
Thats my plan, if we can give killinger an enemy to strike against, we also can give a justification to start using scavenger death squads to solve our bidding.

>Shield miniaturization
I wonder if we could couple this with a ship adaption:

Basically protrude nodules across a ships hull (since it does not need to be aerodynamic) and in each of these armor nodules we have a miniaturized shielding array. By using overlapping and segmented shielding generators we can trade a big strong shield that goes down all at once for localized shielding failure, while overcoming the reduced strength by clustering these nodules together at the right density. When a part of the shielding is about to fail, we can simply turn the ship and allow those shields to regen while others bear the brunt.

Verses low tech or sized weapons fire this should make it all but impervious. A possible adaption for the larger cruiser and above class ships.

It will pit him against an enemy we couldn't give a fuck about anyway and allow the whatever there called to benefit while we stay in the shadows.
>>
>>41486800
You have one Scav parasited, everyone else is only bloodsmears on the floor.

Also it's infinitely more believable to blame the Mirage blowing up on secret Commonwealth stealth capabilities and Leenapping on his dissident 4chan terrorist group buddies that Killinger wanted to infiltrate with Fake Lee. We even have a motive: Lee had an offline backup of the Darwin photo leaks.

The pod opens and pours Jackob to the floor. He coughs up phlegm and medical fluid from his lungs as he gasps for air in the dark of the hive tunnel. He slowly gets up as his new eyes adjust to the darkness, and he examines his arms. He looks to his side, where his clothes have been set out by a worker, and his arm extends out nearly twice its natural length to reach them. He nods to himself approvingly, and a speaker approaches him.

"Did you brighten the lights recently?" He asks.

"No. Eyes are better now!" It says proudly. "Hive eyes much better!" Jackob looks around as he quickly dresses himself.

"That they are."

"This way to others. Follow!" Your speaker chirps and it leads him back down the darkened passageways of the hive to the others.

What do you guys think about this update to the speaker? I'll go though the shit I added.
>Radio - People we have an interest in speaking with or vice versa could possibly be in communication with others, the ability to pick up such signals is a worthy adaptation for our speakers.
>Moderate Psionic - With our improved psionics we can read the intent of intelligent aliens using moderate or above.
>Bipedal legs - The drone builder described them as being ornate and elegent, made for form over function. These feel like a natural fit for our speakers.
>Peacock Carapace - Fluffy speaker best speaker. Also it's free.

While it's quite a bit more expensive, the extra expense doesn't really matter that much given the small amount of speakers we use and our massive income. At the end of the day most of that expense comes from the moderate psionic relay, which allows us a limited mind reading ability on whoever we're speaking to. Even if my other suggestions end up being unpopular I think putting moderate relays in our speakers is a no-brainer.

The others are gathered around the table eating nutrient paste, and the door flexes open. Jackob steps in, his face contorted into a crude facsimile of Lyle.

"Holy shit, what in the hell!" Dillon shouts. The others look from the table as Lyle gets up to turn towards the door.

"Check it out, I'm Lyle!" Jackob says as he fine tunes his face with an unnatural popping sound. He waves his arms over his head and they wave like noodles. "I'm a giant asshole that gets off to having the shit beat out of me, quick, someone punch me in the face!"

Lyle promptly catches his jaw with a right hook. Jackob falls to the ground, laughing as he feels his jaw. It is bent and misshapen, and slowly bending back into shape as he shakes his face back to normal.

"I think you chipped a tooth." He says with a grin.

"I think I chipped a knuckle." Lyle replies as he helps Jackob back to his feet. "Also, that looked nothing like me."

"I was being generous."

Dillon looks over the scene as Jackob's face contorts back to its resting position.
"What in the fuck, man?"

"Neat, ain't it? You can't deny it's goddamn useful. Did you pick anything out for yourself yet, or are you still being a cry baby about it?" Dillon crosses his arms and glares back at the two.

"Well..." he says, "I did, yes, but we really should get going soon, we can't just sit here forever."

"Well that's perfect." Jackob says as he twists his nose. "Lyle's got a tank in the ship, you can just recover in that to save time." Dillon grumbles and looks back to the tablet.

"Yea, yea I picked out two that seemed the most useful. Nothing fancy or, uh-"

"Fun, nothing fun you mean." Lyle says. Jackob laughs.

"Sure, whatever you want to call it."

Your speaker grows still as it turns in the threshold of the door as you direct its words carefully.

"The Hive can also offer another option. Not quite improvement, but a service." You say.

"What kind of service?" Dillon asks with obvious hesitation.

"The Hive can connect to you. Improve healing, improve communication, improve immune system, fix aging-"

"wait, what was that last one?" Jackob asks.

"-and the Hive will always be with you." You finish.

"That's... one hell of a catch." Dillon says. Lee adjusts his collar quickly.

"Um, when you say that, you mean, like, you give us a phone that looks like a liver, or like... in the creepy ex-girlfriend way?"

"Wait," Jackob says, "Lyle, is that the 'special' thing you have? It doesn't happen to be like that time the Unity put that micro-thermobaric bomb in your skull and had you running around doing their errands, is it?" Lyle curses under his breath.

"It's slightly similar, I guess, and I thought we agreed not to talk about that?"

"Sorry, but it is relevant." Jackob says. "So what is it, exactly, an implant?"

"Tiny drone that attaches to the spine. Connects you to the rest of the hive's thoughts." Your spectral figure jabs at him in silence. "It can be, uh, useful, some of the time. I guess." He admits.

"What do you mean, exactly?" Lee says. "I can kinda hear them already, but it sounds like a bunch of nonsense, what do you hear?" Lyle shakes his head.

"Nothin at the moment." He pauses, "well, not noise. It's more like a feeling. They feel, I dunno, happy I guess. There's no sound or anything, but it's as if the hive's in one of those holiday specials where everyone's singing about working on building toys and shit."

"Sounds annoying." Dillon says.

"Not really. It's not distracting, just there. Plus you can hear the Queen a lot. Not like the little speaker shits, it's... I dunno, hard to explain."

"Well I'm glad you brought this shit up before I got in the fucking tank. "Dillon says. He looks to Jackob expectantly, but Jackob seems to be mulling things over.

"Hey, I mean, they had a chance to shove one in me, and Lee even, and they didn't."

"So what, they could be making you say that right goddamn now."

"Then why did they mention it at all?" Jackob says. "All I'm saying is that instead of assuming sinister intentions, try to think of things from their perspective."

"I can't fucking believe your shit, Eisner. You're just used to the idea of some space-thing watching you shit. Somehow I doubt Lyle asked to be given goddamn strings!"

"Now I say this as a man who had a bomb in his brain and still went back for more contracts, but I did try to kidnap a pile of drones, and may have killed quite a few of them while I was at it. They ate the mercs I hired so I honestly can't complain."

"Oh don't you fucking talk, Lyle." Dillon snaps.

"Uh, if it means anything, I can't feel one in anyone but Lyle." Lee says.

"You were in a tank too, you could have one for all I know."

"Goddamn it Dillon stop being such a jackass." Jackob says. "They're offering the thing, that means you get a choice. Just tell them no thank you and be done with it. If they never said anything then you wouldn't even have a chance to throw a shit fit, and if they wanted one in you they'd just jam it on in."

"So why are they even asking, then? Who'd say yes to that?" Dillon says. Jackob glances over to Lyle for a moment and then back.

"Well, maybe I would." Lyle looks at Jackob.

"What?"

"It's got a lot of pros, and the fact that their asking, honestly, means a lot in my book. I think they're putting forth a lot of effort to accommodate our morality. To them it probably looks like you're throwing a fit over someone offering you a slice of goddamn cake." He looks at your speaker angrily. "Well I'll fucking take a slice."

>>
>>41490745
No it mightn't. The Queen is from a self-biologically-engineered species and one of the first things she researched is how intelligent beings tick so as to mess around in their minds.

There is absolutely no reason for her to take seriously the entirely undetectable human myths like "galactic harmonics" and "souls" that that self-help book mentioned.
>>
>>41490779
I don't think I ever said that they aren't different.
You are right, they are different. I suppose I should've been more verbose. What's important here is that once they die once the persona, their identity and their being does not cease to exist with death. They can still pick up from where they left off with their most recent memories intact due to hive network.

But, let's agree to not go into deep philosophical debates here? What matters is that they can continue to be useful and act independently even if they die once.
>>
>>41490917
see your no fun, you should add something like this guy >>41490899

>>
>>41490918
My idea is to actually let Jackob be. He is actually more useful operating independently on his own as he seems to hear a LOT of classified and confidential information through his job normally. Also since hes highly wanted by a corrupt government anyway his natural actions will be in our favor anyway. We have no reason to manipulate his thoughts as hes already quite an awesome catch as is. However, we can occasionally ring him up and check in on him, or passively listen in.
>>
>>41490996
Actually I don't think we manipulated anyones thoughts much. Only one that I can think of is ceph. Lyle was just a weird trip down memory lane, but he doesn't seem indoctrinated in the least.
>>
>>41490398
There is a long and uncomfortable silence as everyone snapped confused, angry, and nervous glances to one another for several minutes. Jackob stands with his arms crossed, looping over each other like woven cables.

"The Hive also could have implanted you in your sleep. It does not take long." Your speaker says. Jackob points a hand to your drone as if emphasizing the point.

"Refuse if you want, but don't shit on the courtesy." Dillon makes several sounds, as if attempting to start a new argument, but he cuts himself off and pinches the bridge of his nose.

"Hey, you've seen it first hand, you know how all-encompassing modern intelligence work is."

"This is way different." Dillon says, looking up. "That's security on the net, cameras in the streets, this is a bug in your spine reading your mind."

"It really isn't all that different if you think about it. I've seen the shit you can pull when you really need to follow someone, and lord have mercy if they have cerebrals it's as close as you can fucking get, but here, it's one thing you can talk with that asked nicely instead of a committee you've never met." Dillon hooks his thumbs in the loop of his pants and grinds his teeth in silence.

"Okay, I'll admit the offer is genuine, but I'm still not interested." Dillon says finally. Jackob nods.

"So how about those other augs, then?" He asks. Dillon taps his foot against the floor rapidly.

"Fine, fuck it, I'm good as dead without 'em any way." He says and walks out the door in a huff. The speaker quickly walks out to lead the way in the darkened corridor. Jackob looks over to Lyle and nods slowly.

"I'm sure he'll come around on the augs at least. This stuff is damn good."

A speaker walks up to Jackob.

"You wanted to join the Hive, yes?" It says, holding out the squirming parasite. Jackob jumps back slightly.

"Jesus, you shouldn't have shown me the damn thing. Sweet lord, just put me under and don't mention where you put it. Not interested in knowing."

Honestly, it's fine that Dillion gave the no, IMO. If he still agrees to help us, he's our designated 'plausible deniability' agent. We have nothing connecting him to us that's not heresay, so if something happens, he is officially an independent entity. A spook until the end, really.

Take a more proactive stance on the 'parasite the civil management guys' front on Gemini. Send flies to scout and stake out all of the other protein recycling plants in the city. Whichever one gets inspected next, ambush and parasite the guy, instead of waiting for them to inspect the one with the Gemini hive in it.

And with psionic reading unlocked, lay some camouflaged, fast drones that can spread out in the sewers beneath the most trafficked areas that humans walk around, the mall or something.

It can then skim their surface thoughts and try and find someone who works as a bodyguard for Parliament representative like Killinger.

Elsewhere in the hive, you observe as Elizabeth monitors the actions of your pod. It continues to scan the brain while Elizabeth rummages through the human's mind. She furrows her brow.

"These people are interesting, but I can't find much of anything to solve our specific problem." He sifts through memories like loose pages of notes. "Actually, these people are very interesting. These humans, they seem to be a part of some kind of techno-cult. Truly fascinating." She finds memories of the strange human shaped being with the metal mask.

"This tribe is governed by a machine." She says. "Old Earth didn't have any regulations on machine intelligence, I suppose it's possible they built some kind of early machine intelligence, or possibly just a highly sophisticated virtual intelligence, on the surface there isn't really a noticeable difference between a program made to fake sapience and actual sapience." The human twitches in the pod.

"According to their laws and decrees, the machine had arranged them into castes. Those who entered the swamp region where you found the relay would be marked, and you could only receive so many marks. Otherwise the swamp was forbidden." She says. "I can't say for certain if that machine was aware of what was in the swamp, but maybe it noticed a trend of lower lifespans among those who spent long spans of time there."

She recedes from the humans mind as it convulses mildly in the fluid of the bio-tank. "Either way," she says, "I can't find any indication that they found any overt solution to it." She taps her finger to her chin in thought. "Of course, the problem isn't the signal itself, again, it's the information, and even then it's a slow process."

Elizabeth steps back from the pod, observing the tribal earthlings with an academic curiosity.

"I think our options are limited. Either we give Lee the internal infrastructure to organize and handle the flow of information, or, perhapse I could attempt some kind of repeat of what the Union attempted with..." She snaps her fingers. "The hu- the man with the weird eye. Yune wasn't it? Maybe if I can get my hands on some similar Skyl artifacts I can repeat the operation, or even find out why it worked." She begins to pace. You wonder if she's even speaking to you directly at this point or just thinking out loud.

"Of course I can't even say for sure if that did work. They only had Yune for a limited amount of time. He seemed to be showing good test results, sure, but he could have been days away from turning into soup for all I know." She looks to a passing drone.

"What do you think? I may be able to adapt the procedure I had to be less invasive even, although I can't promise anything either way."

"What about the Skyl themselves? They could produce more."

"Possibly," she says, "but we don't know much about the artifacts themselves, and I'd like to be able to get a control sample at least. They may very well have been a kind of prototype to the one I was hit with, so it seems like a bit of a half-baked approach. If Lee is concerned about the genetic alterations, I'm sure we can figure out a way around that, or at least limit it. I can focus on that if you'd like, or go over some more Skyl notes and see if I can figure something out on that angle while you try to get one."

"Both are good." Your speaker says. Elizabeth lets out an exhausted sigh.

"Well from what I've gathered from what the Union figured out, the artifacts seem to essentially just be a kind of psionic amplifier, probably a test device if anything, or a part of some larger experiment. It's that bit I'm concerned about, which is why I'd like to be able to study one myself before saying anything for sure, and again, even then I can't be sure it's not actually a horrible idea. The other option, however, would offer some more control over the situation, although admittedly it is a bit of an extreme procedure."

She takes a breath, then closes her eyes for a moment.
"I'm sorry, I'm tired and rambling, but I just keep finding dead ends, and if the records from the labs, and that researcher's mind are anything to go by, I'd say Lee has maybe a month at most before observable symptoms start to show."

Would we need a big fat bribe to the bank to unveil info about the guy who pays Lyle, or to tip us off the next time he orders a package or a new FTLComm as to where and when that package arrives?

I assume it'd have to be a big bribe. Or have the bankers parasited already.

Right. Posting those Hve Ship designs starting with the destroyer then. I wish we had long-range ship weapons. I would've put one on a spinal mount.

Destroyer class Hive Ship

8000N 15000M
Spinal: 1 Railgun, 1 Plasma Lance
Turrets: 4 Ion, 8 Cyclotron
Fixed: 12 Linear Particle Beam, 6 Plasma lance
Auxiliary: 20 Autocannon
Defensive shields 3100N 9300M
Rapid Damage Control 930N 1240M
Atomic Self Destruct 200N 200M
94 Bulkheads 0N 47000M
20 stinger launchers 10000N 6000M
10 cruise launchers 6000N 4000M
Fusion Core 520N 2600M
Heavy armour 15500N 62000M
44250N 147340M

This ship is designed to be a hammer. It works independently, and is very likely to win any one-on-one ship combats. It has the dual purpose of seek-and-destroy the enemy’s flagships, capitals, and sub-capitals, and serve as a distraction or bait. It slams right in the middle of the enemy fleet, wrecking all sorts of havoc and making itself a clear threat, causing the enemy to focus more on it than the other ships manoeuvring. Enemy capitals may even move away from it into position of our choosing, if used correctly. It is not well equipped to deal with swarms of small fighters and indeed has none of its own, but if most enemy fighters are busy attacking the ship and taking pot shots on its shields and armour, all the better. Can also be used as a false Flagship. It certainly looks the part. Use it wisely though, it costs a lot. May add a Ram later.

>>41493793
Not quite. There is a lot going on in the brain at any given time, and while your parasite has full access to it, it's just too much data to preserve all at once.

To put it another way, the parasite has a library card, but it still can't carry out every book if the library catches fire. You can still take a lot, however, but it's not fast and complete enough to cover all the way up to the very moment of death. A "resurrected" clone would have a very hazy memory of that particular day, as if it were a dream that doesn't quite make sense.

>>41493804
Dillon is very unsure about everything at the moment. Jackob is just trying to roll with things it seems.

Fixed: 18 Cyclotron
Auxiliary: 20 Blaster

20 Stinger Launcher 10000N 6000M
Micro Fusion
Ballistic Armour 31000N 15500M
72130N 61840M

Considering shields. Unsure.

Missile Massacre: the ship. Unlike other capitals, this ship isn’t made for direct confrontation. The opposite of the Destroyer Hive Ship, it works best with other ships. It is designed to help other ships by weakening the enemy, intercepting enemy strikes, detecting stealth crafts, etc…
It has a number of drop pods to support planetary campaigns as well. Costs significantly less minerals but more nutrients.
Might not be a good class for Hive ships though, and might work better as several cruisers instead.

Carrier class Hive Ship

8000N 15000M
Spinal: 2 Spinal Hangars (1 docking 4swarms both) 446400N 223200M Is this right? wow!
Turrets: 12 Linear Particle beam
Fixed: 18 Plasma Lance

30 Docking Bay 3000N 1500M
Micro Fusion
Combat Armour 9300N 37200M
509730N 297940M It costs more than the destroyer. I don’t think that’s right. Did I do it wrong? It said per 50m of hull size.

Considering cloaking Field, but unsure.

Another type of support Hive ship. This one does it lots and lots of fighters that can quickly go harass all hostiles or aid ships that have less fighters on hand.
It can of course also house a number of shuttles. I designed it to have some degree of maneuverability to travel from one part of the field to another with ‘relative’ speed (and by that I mean not as slowly as with heavy armour) to deploy its ships. Practically a miniature fleet.
Looking at the Mineral cost, it might not be a good idea.

Maybe we could include that in a missile ambush fleet. The only problem with it that I can see is that you've split the turret mounts into two different weapon groups, which QD explicitly said he wouldn't allow for simplicity's sake. I don't know if he'll accept split spinal mounts.
>>
>>41494391
If you think that's what it needs then go for it. It's your design after all. Though personally if we're making a destroyer I'd suggest long/medium range weapons only.
>>
>>41494301
Oh Christ, why would you want two spinal hangars on a ship of that size, you only need one. If you want two spinal hangars worth of fighters, just lay a second fucking ship.
>>
>>41494337
Let's see here.

>>41494003
No need to use a full Hive Ship for this. Battleship at most, Hive Ships are too big for practical purposes in combat and aren't purpose-built for murdering like battleships are. The Heavy Fleet Battleship fulfills pretty much this exact niche already.

>>41494137
Missiles are best used from stealth, and we've got thousands of stealth-missile boats already. Why would you use a Hive Ship frame just to stick a bunch of missiles on anyway? That would just mean the enemy knows which direction to point all their flak cannons.

>>41494301
Cloaking field is useless on anything above a frigate. Heavy Fleet Battleship and Battlecruisers already operate as highly effective carriers and are much more hardy than this thing. Also with the Rip Drive we won't need any ships to carry non-swarmers.
>>
>>41494468
Or make second ship with two spinal weapon mounts.
nice logic :^)
>>
>>41494433
We have no 'long range' ship weapons, actually. Something to research I guess.

>>41494468
Yeah I figured this was bad. That design's rejected then. Just have one or two battle ships serve as carriers instead or forget that idea entirely.
>>
>>41494003
>>41494137
Is there any reason you didn't include shielding on these ship designs. It's a huge advantage that doesn't cost significantly more.
>>
>>41494487
then what's the point of hive ship if it has nothing it excels in
>>
>>41494518
A flying hive that can produce an invasion force in orbit above the planet you are currently invading.
>>
>>41494549
So a carrier then. Basically as burly as possible with shielding and lots of hangars?
>>
>>41494365
You're missing Union-Unity interface.
>>
>>41494518

Well, see: >>41494549

They're not much use unless you need a mobile hive. You could also use a bare-bones one to rapidly construct a capillary tower for logistical of attack purposes.

About the only good Hive Ship design I've seen (and I've tried coming up with a few myself) is the Citadel one on the 1d4chan page.
>>
>>41494565
Also boarding pods.
>>
>>41494518
When you have to evacuate all your planets and go to nomadic mobile hives. Which we aren't doing.

And making a space elevator in 3 days when consuming a planet.
>>
>>41494487
Got it. Though for the Destroyer the whole point is that a Hive Ship as a sacrificial pawn will do more damage than a Battleship as a sacrificial pawn. It has multiple functions, including looking like a bigger scary threat than it is to keep the enemy fleet's focus while you maneuver, and manipulate then as they move their most important ships away from it.

Anyways, might as well post my last stupid Hive ship design.
>>
>>41494565
And it can be connected to the surface of a planet with a space elevator and be used to creep a planet in hours instead of days
>>
>>41494583

Rest for Storage?
Standard Armour
22030N 35040M

Non-combat Hive ship. Maybe cruiser versions would be better? Unless someone is ambitious enough to try to capture an enemy capital or sub-capital. It’s meant to recover debris an crippled ships for anything interesting. Thought this design may be over complicating things I admit. There’s probably an easier way to recover an enemy cruiser though. Storing parts of a biome or ecosystem is also an option, but no real reason for that yet. The design will probably change when the scavenger ship researches are finished.

>>41494616
This.

It's basically a planet devourer.
>>
>>41494622
Check OP, it's there.
>>41494583
Why aren't we making one then? I mean, thread's dying now, the chance to vote is here.

They just told you where to find it. Are you slow. Read the OP that is there literally every thread.

Uh, we kind of neglected the 100 hybrid crew for many, many days before finally sending them on their way.

Maybe we should aug them up and give them all parasites so they have healing and can start their own hive as a chimera? Can we do that retroactively?

Also should have put some pods onboard the ship so those can be dropped off on distant star systems beyond the range of the blink drive.
>>
>>41494639
WHY DO ONLY USE FUCKING HIVE SHIP HULLS FOR YOUR DESIGNS?! THIS IS NOT THE STRENGTH OF THE HIVE, DAMMIT.
>>
>>41494365
This is really cool, thanks. It's amazing to see how far you've gotten.

>>41494518
The intention when I was working on balancing for things was to make it mostly a logistical ship. Think of it like the mothership from Homeworld. It builds other ships and drones, repair and support fleets, and even gather and process resources. It can also mount a very formidable defense, but it was originally intended to be protected by other craft while it serves the role of force projection.

They make for good carriers, command ships, long range fleets, or just for making a really big first impression during diplomacy.

thanks
we need one
>>
>>41494730
Well with you and me we got two votes for starting construction now.
Any takers? While the thread's here
>>
>>41494708
lets do it son
>>
>>41494708
>Spinal Mounts (x1): Linear Particle Beam 6200M
0/10 would not lay

Absolutely nothing scalesto 6 kilometers properly except for the Railgun. an LPB longer than 300 meters is pointless.
>>
>>41494761
I'll support it. Really I think we should handle all the logistical stuff at the end of next thread though.

If this actually gets put to a vote there are a lot of minor clerical things we need to change.
>>
>>41494799
>>41494802
Right then. Next thread, with railgun instead of LPB.
>>
>>41494708
This looks good, but why don't we hold off on building an actual hive ship until our research into the rip drive and scav tech (grappling hooks, ram) is finished. It'd be a bitch to add such features retroactively.
>>
>>41494708
I would also like to build one.
>>41494799
Maybe with a railgun instead though.
>>
>>41494724
This is a non-combat ship (even if it's a stupid one). It saves up on resources.

Also, literally my first attempt at ship design. You can just nix it. I doubt anyone wants to have them made. I'm like that one retarded Quantum thinker.
>>
>>41494828
Nah man, we'll just make another one. They cost nothing.
>>
>>41494725
I'll support building this >>41494708
with a Railgun on the spinal instead of a LPB
>>
>>41494725
On Gemini. We need eggs. Eggs of mind reading drones spying on all of the humans!

Psionic: Moderate 50N
Sight: Basic
Acoustic: Basic
Olfactory: Basic
Mandible: Combat 1N
Blade: Combat 1N
Arms: Combat 1N
Legs: Sprint 1N
Wings: Moderate 2N
Utility: Acid glands 1N
Carapace: Mimetic skin 2N
Carapace: Adaptive camouflage 8N
Size: Medium
Chassis: Basic 0
Cost: 69N

It's a big city, so 100 of these to spread out in the sewers beneath the humans.
>>
>>41494828
Its actually incredibly easy to retrofit our ships.
>>
Aren't hive ships supposed to be x2 spinal mounts? Why not have a railgun and a LPB?
>>
>>41494799
But that's wrong. The potency of the LPB increases with the length of the weapon, just like the railgun. What makes it handy on such an oversized vessel is it's high rate of fire, making it much easier to hit moving targets, which is pretty damn relevant on a hive ship, being the crawling behemoth it is.

But yeah, railguns would come in handy for bombarding entire continents, so either works.
>>
>>41494881
I think consensus is that we'll use that design but we'll swap LPB for Rail, the other spinal is for hangar.
>>
>>41494906
Consensus might change with >>41494891
>>
>>41494881
I thought we can't split hardpoints?
>>
>>41494918
It might, but truth be told both are good. They're sidegrades.
>>
>>41494891
With diminishing returns that diminish far sooner and more drastically than the railgun, which continues to increase in potential.

>>41494881
Goddammit Thinker we literally just went over this. You're getting recycled.
>>
>>41494950
Thread's up.
>>
>>41494865
Just lay 50 mind-reading Ghost Beetles. No need for an entirely new drone design.
>>
>>41494948
>Goddammit Thinker we literally just went over this. You're getting recycled.
I'm just a relay.
>>
So I've been looking at the star systems and the unnamed red giant has two planet of interest: the toxic world and the irradiated world.

Collecting some of the fumes from the toxic world would improve our already formidable resistence to toxicity and may give us a new gas weapon to use.

The irradiated world we can use to test radiation resistant drones. I just don't like the idea that there's an environment that we can't make a drone who would survive.

Worth looking into? As small research and such.

>Linear particle beams
>The longer the particle projector is the more powerful the weapon becomes, however because of the nature of the speed of light, lengthening the projector gains diminishing returns.
>>
>>41494948
I hope you realize in the vacuum of space, the distance required to have a notable impact on an LPB could be measured in hundreds of thousands of miles.

>>41495041
What.

We are debating the length of the spinal weapon not the distance to the target, what the fuck are you yammering about.
>>
>>41495090
I thought we were debating the effective range of such a weapon in different lengths.

What are you arguing about?
>>
>>41495131
We weren't debating that. Check again anon.
>>
>>41495131
>>41495200
Right, you asked what we were arguing.
Basically railgun gets more damage with length.
So does LPB, but not as much as railgun.
Railgun gains are exponential, while LPB are diminishing.
>>
>>41495131
If tripling the length of a railgun triples the amount of work you can apply to increase its kinetic energy and make its velocity a bigger fraction of lightspeed, tripling the LPB's size from 2km to 6km doesn't give the same proportionate results because it's already at like 99% lightspeed by that point.

It can't benefit as much as railgun does, since its particles are so lightweight they take much less to accelerate.

The power of both diminishes extremely slowly in a vacuum, that's irrelevant. It's about their power right out the gate.
>>
>>41495221
Length of mount, that is. Not distance to target.
>>
>>41494968
It's a new design either way.

And yes there is, there's no need to spend on combat for something that isn't going to be in combat since it's too busy stealthily clinging to the ceiling of the sewers and listening to people for whoever thinks Killinger's a cunt based on personal experience instead of TV.
