PREVIOUSLY ON CARQUEST

You're going to Scotland on holiday with your brother and your dad.
It's really late.
You found your brother's deep dark secret. He browses 4chan
You had a weird-ass dream that we will never mention again.
You vomited all over your brother's shoes.
You had a fight with your dad and crashed the car.
_Someone_ uncrashed the car?
_Someone_ unkilled your mom?
You rejected this, of course.
You returned to the scene of a year ago...
You fought _someone_ and crashed the car.
You returned to the present (?) and decided to lie low.
You exchanged SMS messages with your friend Katie about some serious shit.
You looked at a map and went instantly to sleep.
You had a possibly copyright-breaching nightmare.
You woke up...
And came face to face with a tank and a bunch of soldiers.
You persuaded the rest of the group to get out of the car and obey the soldiers' orders.
You set off a mysterious meter and had a strange gun pointed at you.
You called for help from _someone_, who started making the soldiers be _gone_...
And then _Someone_ got shot and killed?!? Yay?
Too bad your dad hates you now.
Also, you've all been captured and now...

You're in the back of a truck and have been for what seems like hours. It's really dark back here - it's the middle of the night. Looking out from the truck you see a strange looking building. You guess this might be where you are going.

Close examination of the light reveals:

1. Staring at the thing gives you a headache
2. The light isn't constant, it seems to pulse at times. But that's maybe just your headache.
3. The red colour feels familiar from what you saw with the strange gun just before, but now and then you get the odd idea that maybe it isn't actually red at all.

You also note that the truck is slowing down.

You don't think anyone heard.

You are lead out of the truck, under guard, onto... what looks to you like a glorified parking lot. Well, there's a number of differences.

In the distance, there's what seem to be huge walls blocking your view of some kind of structure, this was where the red light was from.

In an area not too far away, you see a truck and a tank parked up. There's a lot of mechanics climbing over them, for some reason.

Further away you see the shadows of what you could imagine to be fortifications, and some kind of gigantic radar dish.

And nearby, there's a man in a raincoat and beret, walking towards you. He's guarded by a soldier carrying that weird rifle you saw earlier.

(Note you might have time to do more than one of this)

The walls are really tall, but what really grabs your attention is the sign on them: '5 Miles to Anomaly'. Just standing here, you feel somewhat uncomfortable.

So you stick close to your family. Until the approaching man steps right up to you.

"Colonel!" The soldiers guarding you snap to attention.

"Ah, so you have returned? I thought we sent B team and Number 1 tank with you?"

"Oh uh, they broke down sir," one of the soldiers says.

The man frowns, then looks at you, with a broad smile.

Out of some unspoken agreement, all three of you keep quiet.

The Colonel's expression changes fractionally. Then he turns to the soldier guarding you. "Report."

The soldier says, "Uh, it was very routine sir. We set up the roadblock as you requested. Then we intercepted a vehicle. We had uh, a small malfunction with the scanners, but then the Outsider exposed itself, and we neutralised it, sir."

The Colonel waits a moment, and asks, "the scanner malfunctioned, did it?"

"Well, these things happen, sir. But the device worked in the end, sir."

"Oh, that is so then." He looks at you. "Hmm..."

You notice that dad might have something very angry to say very soon.

Personally im against this choice as it's going to draw suspicion to us. Also I don't think its wise to completely throw _someone_ under a bus, as _it_ might not be dead. But I see no other way to advance the plot, so lets just get this over with.

How does it throw _someone_ under the buss? They already know it's an outsider, the only difference is whether it did damage before dying (or 'dying').

Nope it's crazy stuff about a truck disappearing. And we'd have no other way of knowing B team was in a truck.

Also
>"Oh, that is so then." He looks at you. "Hmm..."

Contradicting this story might throw off his already-having-suspicions about us. If we were an Outsider who had bamboozled all these people, we'd never challenge our own cover story we planted in their minds.

Whereas, "scan someone else first" really did sound like something an outsider would say.

"You'll note that only us two noticed what happened with the tank. The soldiers did not, your family did not see anything strange happen. Only us two. We intercepted your SMS messages too, you know. Your friend Katie, living hundreds of miles away, also did not see anything odd about your mother being alive. Is it not more simple that something happened to us two, than something happened to the rest of the world and conveniently left us out?

"Suppose many worlds - or perhaps many possibilities exist. One where the tank was there, and one where due to some simple freak accident the tank was not. Suppose that someone existed who was an outsider - an outsider to causality, it would be trivial to see this was the case, and to move between the two possibilities in this way."

You hazard a guess. "Is this something to do with this outsider's mistake?"

"Correct, this is very relevant. You see, for an outsider, it could have moved from one timeline to another and no one would have noticed anything. Nothing would have changed. But a very foolish someone did something different. It took the boy with it."

"Now, tell me, what was the circumstances of your mother's death?"

He listens. "Yes, that would make sense."

"Well, to hear the outsider tell it, it was pity."

He looks at you, then clasps his hands together. "Well, whatever passes for pity amongst them. I do not necessarily believe this outsider. No, I don't believe it at all. But this is the tale."

"You see, this outsider realised that the brother was sad that his sister Alice had died. Like I said, it would be very easy for the outsider to go to a world where the sister didn't die. But that wouldn't do any good, would it?"

"Because the particular brother who lost the sister wouldn't know, and the brother that the outsider took pity on would remain in his world with the dead sister. So the outsider broke the rules. The outsider wanted to save, not the sister, but the brother. So it moved the brother, so that the brother would know that the sister was still alive. Well, it did a bit more than that. I imagine that your case was similar."

"But it didn't work right, did it?"

What happened to the real alive sister in that world?

I'm guessing that they made something more akin to a pocket dimension, to their own specifications, and then they filled the roles of brother and sister.

You explain the whole deal with the missing face, the waking up in a strange car and so on.

"Yes, that's right. What went wrong was that the world the boy was brought to was not his own. It was a world where years and years had passed that were different. The boy couldn't accept this reality. He couldn't even accept that his sister was alive. What made this little problem worse was that to move the boy, the Outsider must have given the boy a portion of its powers."

"And with those powers, the boy could fight back."

"Yes, yes."

He seems irritated by this line of questioning.

"Well, how should I know? The real question you should ask is what happened to the *brother* in the new world, given that it was replaced by the old brother. Maybe the Outsider picked a world where at just that instant, the brother died. The multiverse of possibilities is infinite, after all. Or the Outsider ate him. Or he's are in limbo somewhere. I don't know and I don't care."

"In the first world he was moved to, the sister was *real*. But that's besides the point - the point is the suffering of the poor innocent brother, don't you see. The brother who just wanted to go home. That's the headaches. The brother, subconsciously at first, was using his borrowed abilities to try and go back to the world where the sister did not exist."

"It happened almost instantly. The first thing the brother did was to move to the nearest world where there was no sister. And that's when the Outsider came back, to clean up the mess."

"Did it talk to you?"

"As you did, so did I." He says at last.

"Well, it was surprisingly forthright. It told me everything. It apologised for how it ruined my life. Now I was happy, the cause of my misery was explained! But then it told me I couldn't be brought back. You see, it's not very easy to find a particular world. You could find *a* world where my sister didn't exist, but to bring me back to the original one was to locate a world that recreated all the trillions and trillions of tiny tiny decisions would restore the original situation. That was, it said, outside the power of any one Outsider. It said I should just settle and be happy in the new world. Or it could take me to any particular world I would choose, maybe even teach me to master my abilities."

"And that's when I got very angry."

"I guess you're a coward then for not even trying."

"It was very funny how it happened. It was just explaining that getting angry was pointless. You see, an outsider, if you try to harm them normally, could just move to a world where the threat never existed. But it didn't think about its essence... To actually do damage, you just need to be able to keep up with the Outsider, to stop it from escaping. You should see the look on its face when I punched the thing that was pretending to be my sister!"

Was that it? I had thought it had been using its powers too much too quickly, too suddenly, and that had weakened it. Then when it tried fighting against the soldiers, it got overwhelmed in its weakened state.
But yeah, it getting hurt in that situation could be the case as well.

"I needed it because it was not one Outsider that was wrong. The existence of Outsiders is wrong. Think about it! Every shameful thought we have could manifest in some reality, and there is some entity that can watch that and judge us for it! And worse, they could toy with us at any time. They could destroy us at any time! Even make it so that we never existed. The more I thought about it, the more I realised the danger they posed. And the more I understood that I alone held the ability to end them for good."

"I had the essence of the outsider within me. I could extract more from other outsiders. I could use this essence to make special weapons, weapons good against outsiders. Cages, even, that could trap them. And trapped and tortured outsiders would lure more in."

"It took time, but I put the bits of the plan together. It was quite simple actually. If I borrowed a bit of their power I could just go to a world where any failure just didn't happen."

Everything you think about is another world? That seems like a stretch. Also that they even are capable of judgment.

But this brings up an interesting point.
He's suggesting that they're moving us between universes.
But they're not. They're altering the past in the universe they're in, otherwise the two people (we know of) who are immune to this bull wouldn't be effected.
>>
>>41496117
They are not immune. They are the exact opposite of immune.

The outsider explicitly explained it to him that it's travel.
>>
>>41496154
Didn't mean to say immune, sorry, meant to day that they'd get seperated.

The colonel was "moving" independently of _someone_, and yet every time we were in the same universe as each other.
It'd make sense if there was only one outsider, but there's clearly not.

Also, the colonel doesn't necessarily know everything about what he's talking about. It's an extra-dimensional being beyond our comprehension, and I doubt he has a degree in applied theoretical meta-physics.

That or I'm reading far to deep into this.
