You are Marcella S. Master Duelist, professional Guardian, and until recently, crossdresser extraordinaire.

Your job has taken an interesting turn, as you have now gone from guarding one princess to guarding another... Okay, not an interesting turn when you put it that way, but the circumstances behind it make it so.

Fearing for the safety of her daughter, Princess Laura asked you and Giles to take Princess Selene somewhere she would be safe.

You've yet to find that legendary "safe place", but you hope you will eventually. That is, if you can last through the siege...

You lean back into your chair.

It's been 3 hours since you heard the first explosions from the mainland. Giles left a little while before that to go see how the evacuation was going, and he hasn't come back yet. Kuma went after him as soon as she heard the first explosion, leaving you to tend to the young'un...

You grip your sword more tightly. The feel of the leather sheath comforts you, despite the fact that your current problems can't be beaten with steel.

Oh, how you wish they could be beaten with steel. So many things would be simpler if you could just challenge them to a duel. If it were like that, you could put this whole war to an end and put things back to the way they were.

"But they can't be the way they were..." You say. Too many deaths. Laura's parents... your parents...

That's right. It might be easy to forget, but your family is dead. You family is dead, and you're going to the one place that is going to remind you of that at every turn.

You really wish that you could've put up more of a fight on that issue... But in the end, Giles is in charge and Kuma knows this stuff best.

"But it had to be Denton" You say, pulling on an errant hair that drops down over you eye. "Hahhhhh... fuck"

>[1/2]
>>
>>41461419
You close your eyes and lean your head back. It's not like you would've put up much of a fight anyway. Despite styling himself as a bastard and constantly talking about how much of an arse he is, he's a good guy. You doubt that he'd make you go to Denton if he saw no reason to it.

Come to think of it, you've really warmed up to him... At the Palace, you got to see a lot of fakes smiles on fake people who tried their hardest to act genuine. In contrast, Giles is a genuine guy that tries to act fake and fails miserably.

And his smile's not just genuine, it's also kind of charming...

You shake your head as you feel your cheeks heating up. "Damn damn damn damn" You say.

"Mama, is something wrong?" Selene asks.

Motherfucker! You just got her to damn well sleep through the damn noises from the siege!

"It's nothing sweety, go back to sleep" You say, sounding far more motherly than you intend to.

Selene does the exact opposite of what you tell her to, sitting up and fixing you with her big, adorable blue eyes. "Do you need a hug?" She asks.

>>
You sigh and slump over. Selene's lucky that she's so damn cute, otherwise you'd be pretty mad right now.

"Fine, fine" You say, opening your arms.

Selene smiles and skips over to you, hopping onto your lap and giving you a big hug. You feel her tense up and hug a little tighter as another explosion goes off in the distance.

"Still scared?" You ask.
"Mmhmm" She replies.

You smile and stroke her hair, both to comfort her and because her hair is soft as hell.

"Did papa and Kuma come back yet?" She asks.
"Not yet, sweetie" You say. "But I'm sure they'll be fine"

Probably...

Maybe...

You shake your head. Giles is too slippery to get offed out there, and Kuma is with him too. You're sure they'll be fine.

Probably...

Your thought process is diverted by a grumbling sound. You grip your sword and search around for its source, ready for a possible fight.

You hear it a second time, and manage to find the source.

"Hungry?" You ask.
Selene nods.

Of all the times...

"Alright, let's go find Father... uhh..." You say. He did introduce himself... it started with a P... Paul? Peter? Close... Pitre! "Father Pitre! Him, let's go find him"
"Okay..." Selene says.

You tap Selene under the chin. "Chin up, Selene. I'm sure Giles will come back and then you can hear all about how he single-handedly sent the bad guys packing"

Probably...

You shake your head again and shoot out of your chair, marching off to the door and out into the manor.

You think your pretty familiar with this place, but you aren't sure where to find Father Pitre... Are you even supposed to call him Father? Giles calls him that, but the guy is his actual dad...

Nevermind that, time to get looking!

Well, this is an orphanage. Orphanages have children. Selene's scared of the explosions, and she's been through crazier shit than this; so you can't imagine that the orphans are handling it very well.

So chances are that the good Father is down with his children...

Probably...

Well at least if he isn't there, you can always ask someone where he might be. So you head through the manor to the basement. Thankfully you won't need to ask for help, because he is indeed here.

You find Father Pitre outside the door to what you're pretty sure is the children's rooms.

"Hey, you have a minute?" You ask him.
"Ah! Marcella, right?" He says. "Of course, what is it?"
"The resident bottomless stomach is hungry" You say.

"I see" Pitre says. "Come with me. I don't think there's anyone in the kitchens this late, but there's bound to be something up there"

You nod and follow after the big man. He really is quite large; bigger even than Dalen. You wonder what he did to get so big...

"Any word back from Giles?" You ask.
"None so far" Pitre says. "The last I heard was that he aided the defense of the evacuation point, and then disappeared"

"Any other news?" You ask.
"Well, several of the enemy's siege weapons are on fire" He says. "You could probably attribute that to him"
"Are they really?" You ask.
"Yes, it's hard to tell from here because there's so much smoke, but the city is certainly not the only thing ablaze" He says.
"How bad is the damage to the city?" You ask.

Pitre sighs. "It can be... rebuilt" He says.

That bad, huh?

You find yourself having to lengthen your strides to keep up with the big man, which your leg does not agree with. By the time you reach the kitchens, the combination of your quickened pace and a Selene's worth of extra weight has pain shooting up through your side with every step.

"Are you alright?" Pitre asks.
"I'm-" You stop. You remember Giles touting this guy's amazing healing abilities, so you might as well tell him. "Not. My leg was injured in a fight at Castle Harthren, and it hasn't quite healed yet"

Pitre steps into the kitchens and beckons you to follow. "Take a seat then" He says. "I'll see what I can find for the little one, and then see what I can do about your leg"

"Thanks" You say, stepping into the kitchen and finding a spot to sit.

>[1/2]
>>
Pitre eventually comes back with 3 sandwiches, and gives one to you.

Only when he tries to give one to Selene do you both realise something: She's asleep.

"Selene, wake up. We got food" You say.
Selene's eyes open, and she spots the sandwich in your hand. She immediately bites it, and then takes it in her hands. She then smiles at you with her full mouth.

You chuckle and take the other sandwich from Pitre, who sets the third one down and leans over your injured leg.

"This one, right?" He asks.
"Yeah, there's a gash that goes from here to here" You say, indicating the location of the injury. "It's stitched up right now, will that be a problem?"
"It shouldn't be" He says, putting a hand on your leg. "Now hold still"

You feel a strange warmth emanating from his hand, and the pain in your leg vanishes in its wake.

"This will take a minute" He says.

You nod, and decide to talk about-

"So has Giles always been so... uhh..."
"Giles?" Pitre adds.
"Yeah, pretty much" You say.

Pitre smiles. "To put it simply, yes" He says. "I've never quite been able to pin down whether he's a good or bad person. I can count the number of days that went by without him breaking the law in some respect on one hand, but I can't even recall a time when he ignored someone who was in need"

"And he still acts like he's a bad person" You say.
"Oh, ignore that" He says. "That goes back a long ways. He likes to think he's some kind of devious bad guy. While he is devious, he is very much not a bad guy"

"That's right!" Selene says. "He beats up the bad guys!"
You rub her head. "Yes he does" You say.

You were honestly caught off guard by the lengths he went to to help you and the others out, at first. You almost didn't believe Laura when she said that he stayed behind in Catisse so she could escape, and you were downright shocked when he showed up with Selene in tow afterwards.

You kind of expected the rescue in Restoule, and after that you've been pretty unquestioning when it comes to putting your hopes in him.

"Something wrong?" Pitre asks.
"Bwha?" you reply.
"You got pretty quiet for a moment there" He says.
"Oh... ahhh... just lost in thought, I guess" You say. Damnit all, you can feel the flush in your cheeks again...

"Well, your leg should be fine now" He says. "Stand up and give it a test"

You do as he says, and find that the pain is completely gone. "Wow" You say. "That's... that's actually really impressive"
"A lot of people think so" He says. "It is a useful skill, to say the least. But I should get back to the children, take care"

Father Pitre leaves, and you-

"Alright Selene, let's-" You stop when you look down at her. "Asleep again? That was pretty dang quick"

You sigh and head back to your room. You'll put her back to bed and continue your vigil there. Despite how tired you are, you would rather not sleep until you've got some backup on the princess guarding...

You wonder if Pitre might be able to help you there, but he has his own to look after.

On your way to your room, you come across a man in leather armor.

"Ah, you must be Marcell-... us..." He says, looking confused by your dress.

You don't recognize this man, but the emblem on his armor is one of the Harthren crests... from the Dugen province, you think.

"And you are?" You ask.
"A friend" He says. "The King and the Princess sent me to get you and the lady somewhere safe. If you'll please come with me"

He motions for you to follow him.

You're about to follow, when something catches in the back of your head and you take a step back instead.

"I don't suppose you were given anything to confirm your identity" You say.
"I do" He says. "But there's no time for that now, quickly, you must come!"

Another step back.

"How did you get in here through the siege?" You ask.
"I came in by boat" He says. "There's a ship anchored off the east coast"

You hear footsteps behind you, and shake Selene awake.

"And my companion?" You ask.
"The kidnapper?" He asks. "I'm given to understand that you were coerced into following him. Just come with me and I can bring you back to the Princess"

Selene wakes up, and you put her down on the ground. "Mama, what's happening?" She asks.
"I'll explain in a second, sweetie" You say.

The man gives you a strange look as you approach him, and his eyes go wide as you whip the sheath off your sword and run him through. You pull your sword out of his chest, and let his body drop to the ground.

"Come on, sweetie. We have to-"

Another person in armor rounds the corner, and you can see the Dugen crest on them too. When they see the body, they pull out a whistle and blow it before breaking into a charge...

You sidestep his charge, and using the same technique that you taught Selene you knee him in the groin. The man goes down, and with your sword you make sure that he stays down.

The whistle was probably an alarm of some sort, to alert the others that you and Selene had been found.

"Definitely not friends" You say, grabbing Selene's hand. "Come on!"

You take Selene and run back to the basement stairs. The sound of troops moving through the manor becoming more and more apparent.

In the basement, there are several more men on the ground. You don't see any wounds on them, but from what Giles told you of Pitre that's probably par for the course...

You come around a corner and step back just in time to narrowly avoid another man being thrown against a wall.

"Oh! Terribly sorry Marcella. I heard footsteps and I assumed it would be more soldiers" Pitre says.

There are at least 5 men lying unconscious or dead on the ground, and you passed at least 7 more on the way here.

"You know these men?" He asks.
"No" You say. "The one I ran into said he was sent by Laura"
"So they actually talked to you" He says. "I assume that it's the little lady they're after"
You nod.

Pitre thinks for a moment. "The garrison must be informed, if they're not fending this force off already" He says. "I dare not leave this place unguarded, though. I doubt these men are above taking hostages. One of us must go"

"I'll stay here" You say.
Pitre nods. "Then I shall return post-haste" He says.

You nod to him, and Pitre takes off down the hall. You're pretty sure he bowls a few people down on his way, too.

You take a quick look around to see just what it is you're to be defending. Pitre corralled all the children into one room at the end of the basement hallway. Though crowded, it's also easy to defend. There is only one window, which is currently boarded up.

So the only entrance is the hallway you're standing in. Unfortunately, that also means that it's the only exit as well. If things go south, the kids will have no way to escape unless they pull the boards off the windows.

You send Selene into the room with the rest of the children, and take a moment to reassure them.

Then you face down the hallway, take a deep breath, and steel yourself.

Marcellus has never lost in a real fight. Marcella will not be breaking his record.

The first of what you're pretty sure will be many combatants comes down the hallway, running towards you with his weapon low. Classic approach. Very much by the book. You've seen it a million times and know exactly how to counter it.

He gets close and swings his weapon upwards, but you step back to avoid it. Then you lunge back in, thrusting your sword through a gap in his armor while he's still managing the momentum of his previous swing.

One down. You leave his body where it is and take a few steps back. He fell in a good position, and his body is sure to make a nice obstacle for his comrades.

Another two come down the hallway. One sees the downed man, the other doesn't and trips. You take the first down while the other is recovering, then take out the second.

You quickly lose count of how many you've killed. You're incredibly tired, and it takes all of your focus just to keep fighting.

Soon enough the hallway is littered with corpses, and the other attackers have trouble keeping their footing.

During a lull in the fighting, you hear noises coming from the room behind you. You tear your gaze away from the other end of the hallway to check behind you.

You don't see anything amiss. But you smell smoke, and you hear the sound of panicked children...

Of course, something else had to go wrong. You listen for any other oncomers, and when you don't hear any you run back to the door.

"Is everything okay in there?" You ask.

No one answers, so you bust open the door.

To your left is the window, to your right the children are huddled against the wall. The window boards are on fire, and the fire has spread to a bed underneath the window. Smoke pours out of the open doorway.

"Everyone out!" You say.

The children don't question you, and immediately crowd the doorway. You do your best to keep them organized, but the sound of more people coming down the hallwway draws your attention...

You whip your body around, and slash your sword at an unseen enemy. Your sword connects with an arrow, knocking it away. You quickly hit a second, and a third.

There are two more men with blades approaching, as well as a pair of archers supporting them.

You can't handle that. No way in hell.

Luckily, you don't have to. Pitre crashes into the archers, crushing them both against the wall. Then he runs up to the other two and smashes their heads together. The whole thing happens so fast that even your wouldn't have had time to react. At least not now, but your reaction times are starting to suffer from how tired you are.

"I arrived just in time" Pitre says.
"Maybe a couple seconds late" You say. "But I'm glad you're here"

The children are quick to calm now that Pitre is here, and he gets them moving out of the burning room quickly.

Selene immediately clings to your leg when she escapes the throng, and you crouch down to hug her.

"You have any way to put that out?" You ask Pitre.
"Unfortunately not" He says. "We'll have to vacate this place"
"We're just gonna let this place burn?" You ask.
"We have little other choice" He says. "The garrison can put it out later, but right now we need to get to safety"

"And just where is safe?" You ask.

Pitre says nothing.

>[1/2]
>>
You pick up Selene with your free hand, taking the rear of the group while Pitre leads the children from the head.

You make your way back up from the basement, and out of the manor.

Pitre said that he would take the children to the garrison. It's the only fortified building on the island, unfortunately.

Something feels off, though. On the way to the garrison, you end up fending off several of the "Harth" men. But you see nothing of the guard. Didn't Pitre tell the garrison about this?

Your answer comes in the one way you didn't want it to. Along the way you see several dead men wearing the colours of Searise's guard. From a passing examination, you don't see any wounds on them...

You're wondering why that is, when you get a sinking feeling in the pit of your gut. The space before you erupts into darkness, swallowing the crowd of frightened children.

"Of course, if you want something done you ALWAYS have to do it yourself" A feminine voice comes from the front of the group.

You try to get through the darkness, but it's solid. You think this is similar to one of Giles' spells, but you don't know enough about it to be sure...

So you circle around it to the front, where a familiar woman is confronting Pitre...

It's THAT woman.

Her name doesn't come to mind. You personally don't care what it is.

You charge. The woman seems to be talking with Pitre. You can hear what they're saying. You don't care.

You thrust, it's deflected.

You slash, it's blocked

You hit her with a flurry, but none of your strikes land.

"My, my, aren't we a little angry?" The woman asks.
"SHUT UP!" You shout, attacking again.

The night itself seems to be what's blocking your strikes. You could be seeing things though. You're so tired...

"Remember now, haste makes waste" She says.
"YOU MURDERED..." You strike again. "MY PARENTS"

Your sword gets caught up in something, so you abandon it and use your fists.

Your first punch is blocked, but it was a feint anyway. Your second one connects with her face, and you feel her nose give out.

"And again with the face" She says, backing away with a hand over her nose. "It's like you people don't know how to go for something vital"
Breathing heavily, you retrieve your sword. "You talk too much" You say.
"Of course I do" She says. "How else am I supposed to distract you while someone else gets the job done"

You do NOT like that smile. Out of fear for Selene, you turn around.

Your heart drops.

She's gone.

Selene is gone.

You turn back to face Cassandra just in time, as she takes the offensive. You parry a shadowy blade that protrudes from the ground, and ready for another attack.

But then Pitre steps in. He engages Cassandra, and yells to you. "Go!"

You know what he means. You know what you have to do.

You wrack your brain for where whoever took her might have taken her...

The man you talked to said that their ship was anchored to the east, but he might have been lying. It's still all you have to go off of though, so you face east and break into a sprint.

After a solid minute of running as fast as you can, you start to worry that maybe you're running the wrong way. But then you catch sight of them.

Two men. One has Selene over their shoulder. You push your body a little harder.

One of them looks back and sees you, and they run a little faster.

But you're still gaining on them.

You can see the coast, and the boat parked there.

You aren't gaining fast enough. Your lungs burn with each breath, and your legs don't seem to be enjoying this exertion.

At the boat you see more archers, and you prepare yourself to block their arrows on the run. But something lights up and catches their attention.

You catch up to the unburdened man and kick his face, using your momentum to jump off him like a stepping stone.

Your eyes return to the archers and the boat. The boat is on fire, and so is one of the archers.

The man you're chasing decides to give you what you want, throwing Selene at you to knock you off balance before drawing his blade to finish the job.

Selene hits you and knocks you right over, and it looks bad. But then a dagger hits the man in the arm, and after a few seconds sparks begin to fly out of it...

>>
"Wrong spell" A familiar voice says.

The man screams as the sparks catch on his sleeve. He runs around in a panic as the fire spreads. Another man comes into view and puts him out of his misery.

"That was supposed to be Dark Fog. I was going to sneak up and he would never have been the wiser" The man says, stamping out the flame. "Well, I guess the end result is the same..."

The man walks over to you and lifts Selene off of your chest, smiling his stupid, charming smile as he does so.

"Hey Marcy" He says. "Miss me?"

You don't think you've ever been so happy to see someone in your entire life. Giles helps you to your feet, and on tired legs you stumble into him.

"Master, the others have been dispatched" Kuma says.
"Excellent" Giles says, now all that's left is to pick off the straggl-...ers... Uhh... Marcy? You okay?"

You're staring. You know you are. You know you shouldn't be thinking of doing what you're thinking of doing, but right now you're much too tired and elated to care...

A girlfriend who might secretly be gay, if Pitre's suspicions are correct.
>>
You know he's currently attached to someone else.

You know he's probably not interested in you.

But right now, you don't care.

You lean in and lock you lips with his, catching him completely off guard. After a second or so, you wrap your arms around his waist and pull him closer.

You pull away before he can finally react, smile weakly, and then slump over on his shoulder and pass out.

>From Giles' POV

You hide in the bushes, waiting to ambush the would-be kidnappers. The Ember-Spree enchanted knife you hid in the boat should be goin off any second now, and you have 3 more enchanted daggers primed and ready to throw.

The enemy commander was happy to tell you why thy were attacking Searise. It wasn't about revenge. Someone told them to attack here. Someone whose name starts with a 'C' and ends with an 'assandra'.

As soon as you heard that, you tried to convince him to pack his things and go. Failing that, you killed him and set fire to the siege engines and most of the tents before coming back here.

You catch sight of two men running to the boat with Selene, and see Marcy running full tilt to close the gap. Marcy jumps off the face of the first one, but the second bowls her over by throwing Selene.

Well they're not quite at the ambush point yet, but your hands are a little tied here.

You throw a dagger enchanted with Dark Fog into the man's arm before he can strike Marcy, but when you evoke it one of the daggers in your hand goes off.

"Shit" You say. "Uhh... Ember Spree?"

You hear a masculine scream, and know that it worked. You then dispel the fog and walk out onto the path.

"Wrong spell" You say, grimacing as the man scrambles around in a panic. You stab his heart with your cane, if for no other reason than so he'll stop screaming. "That was supposed to be Dark Fog. I was going to sneak up and he never would have been the wiser" You say to Marcy, as you stamp out the flames. "Well, I guess the end result is the same..."

You walk over to Marcy and lift Selene off of her. As soon as she's up, Selene clings to you with all the force she can muster.

"Hey Marcy" You say, giving her a smile. "Miss me?"

You give Marcy a hand getting up and she stumbles a bit, so you put a hand on her waist to steady her.

This is why I love this quest: Master Thief to Big Damn Hero.

"Master, the others have been dispatched" Kuma says.
"Excellent" You say. "Now all that's left is to pick off the straggl-...ers... Uhh... Marcy? You okay?"

She's giving you a strange look, part tired, part... something else. Her cheeks are flushed, her eyes are half closed, and her lips are parted juuuuust a little.

Then she moves in and kisses you.

It starts out light, but she quickly pulls you closer and deepens it.

By the time your brain has caught up with events, Marcy pulls away, gives you a weak smile, and passes out. You struggle to keep her from falling over with Selene occupying an arm, but Kuma quickly helps you out.

You blink a few times as Kuma sets her down.

"Did that just happen?" You ask.
"Did what just happen?" Kuma replies.
"You know... that" You say.
"Marcella kissing you?" Kuma asks.
"Yes" You say.
"Yes" She replies.

You chuckle, despite the current chaotic state of your head. "Your input is appreciated" You say.
"Thank you, master" She says.

You sigh, and look back to the town. Smoke is all you can see from here, and you'd be surprised if there was anything left by the time anyone got down to put the fires out.

"Man, Melissa is gonna be maaaaaaaad" You say. "I'm gonna have to donate half my fortune to putting this place back together just to avoid getting whipped"

"Would she really whip you?" Kuma asks.
"No... probably" You say. She just might. You shudder at the thought. "Come on, grab Marcy and let's get back to the manor"

Kuma does as you say, and the two/four of you get on your way.

You spare a few glances at Marcy as you walk. That did happen... Why did that happen?
"Hoo boy, things are going to be awkward tomorrow..." You say.
"Why?" Kuma asks.
"Well because..." You sigh. "Nevermind"

That's all for tonight, I hope you guys still enjoy reading this as much as I enjoy writing it!

Blood moon has been fun, but like you guys said: it's good to be back.

Next thread will probably be tomorrow.

As always I'll be sticking around for question/suggestion time!

>>41469588
Thanks, Smiley.
>>
>>41469588
thanks for running
>>
>>41469588
Devil's Whim will be running, tomorrow? Just to clarify.
>>
>>41469588
Thank's for running Smiley great thread as always! On that note i'm going to go pass out.
>>
>>41469588
So how are you going to be switching quest from quest?
>>
>>41469609
Tomorrow will be Devil's Whim

>>41469616
I'll run one up to a good stopping point, then switch. For Blood Moon it'll probably be at the end of each day, for Devil's Whim... I dunno.

If that doesn't work, I'll have to create a running schedule. Doing BM on specific days and DW on others.
>>
>>41469652
Awesome, it'll be good to do this quest again.

Thanks for the run, Smiley!
>>
>>41469652
I like the specific days idea, maybe DW on Saturdays and BM on Mondays and if something comes up or whatever just move the other quest too. It's all up to you either way.
