Welcome to VR-BBEG Quest, the quest with a large number of capital letters! Last thread, John Smith, attempted dark lord, bitchslapped a prince and then proceeded to train him. This thread, we research dragons and learn MYSTEEEERIOUS MAGIC, thanks to a modified 100.

It doesn't take long before you're at the library, angling to learn a little more about the best ways to hunt ferocious, scaled monsters, with massive fangs. Probably the best way is to not try at all, but hell. It's not every day you make a deal with a fire elemental, is it?

To kill a water dragon, one or two types of magic will likely be more effective than most. Earth, perhaps? Sighing in disgust at the lack of help from Russell – so much for 'handler' – you spend nearly an hour rooting through the shelving, occasionally accosting one of the glazed-eyed staff NPCs.

Turns out, there's plenty of different types of magic, but probably one of the best for dealing with a water-spewing death machine is electricity. Lightning magic, as they call it.

>Modified 100

You manage to find a small skill book on it, buried in a pile of tomes yet to be shelved, and a brief skim activates the Lightning Magic skill in your abilities. That was easier than expected, not that you could power a lightbulb at the moment.

The other concern is general strategy; the few books you can find generally agree that getting an elementally-based monster out of its environment is best (obvious enough), which means you'll need a way to get the dragon away from water, if possible. Some kind of bait, maybe? Perhaps a water dragon near a stream would be better to target than one near an ocean.

Checking the time, you find there's two hours until you need to log out again; with the festival tomorrow, you figure the best way to spend the rest of your time is to

OP, the character sheet is not up to date (we hit riding 15 and learned something from sparring with the prince. Other thing, what are we able to do with teleportation 22?
>>
>>41454979
>>explore (random encounter).
>>
>>41455123
Crap, sorry, there was an error in Riding's level. The current and end XP was correct, as was everything else. Riding has been fixed.

Level 22 is equivalent to a well-trained beginner, so (while I'm playing fairly fast and loose with skills) you can teleport short distances (maximum about 5ft at a time), more for the purposes of combat than travel.

At the moment, you need to have line of sight or know what the target area looks like, so you can't teleport into a room you've never been into. It's still fairly expensive MP-wise, but that'll decrease as you level.

And everyone, roll me 1d100, best of 3!

Thoughts on your upcoming task, you pull yourself up and set out to finish exploring the rest of the castle. Must like the town, it's a European-style, solid greys and browns on the exterior, but the inside is warmer and more lively than you would have expected.

With the evening meal having finished, the halls aren't too empty of NPCs; servants of both sexes and all ages move about, some with more of a gleam of intelligence than others. You find the kitchens, meeting rooms and study rooms adding themselves to your map as you look in, until you hear someone calling for you.

“Lord-Commander!” Not recognising the nasally voice, you pause and look behind; it's a short, plump man dashing towards you, his aging frame weighed down by voluminous, brightly-coloured robes, and a thick golden chain hanging from his neck. His pinched expression doesn't help. “Lord-Commander, I've been looking for you since before dinner. Have you readied the latest assignments for the guards?”

The lines above his head read, 'Sir Markus Vareith, Lv. 14'.

Lets find a water dragon, then plant and manipulate rumors about it causing havoc so we have basis to use the guard and/or military for hunting it.
>>
>>41455974
Yeah. We wanted to be manipulative, behind the scenes kinda evil mastermind. Lets get into the act. Instead of just asking people go kill a dragon for us, manipulate them into wanting to kill a dragon for us.
>>
“Of course. I'll get them to you directly.” Like crap you're going to deal with paperwork as well. 'Russell?'

'Wh- I'll deal with it!' he yelps, sounding like you startled him. What was he even doing?

Vareith, at least, seems more settled. Relaxing, he puffs himself up slightly – not that it's particularly obvious under all that thick cloth – and peers at you. “I'll expect them in my office by tonight. All orders have to be finalised early, in preparation for the holiday tomorrow.”

“Right, Meerow's festival,” you consider, trying to work out if you're meant to be present for that.

“That's... Merrowin, Lord-Commander.”

You nod sharply. “As I said. In any case, you'll have the papers soon. I'll sort them out as soon as possible.”

“Good, good.” He reaches into a deep pocket, withdrawing a golden pocket-watch – at least this world has clockwork; and studies it for a moment. “Should be enough time – I presume you'll be judging the tournament as normal, my Lord?”

You hedge. “As long as nothing interferes.” Tournament? Russell owes you a damn good explanation for this shit. “I'd better get on, if I'm to get you those... things.”

Apparently he gets the hints (the bored expression probably helped), and scurries away after a quick bow that makes his back click loudly. You can usually sympathise with that sensation.

>Get Russell to sort out the paperwork; you didn't sign up for virtual guard management
>Working out the guards assignment might help. Go do them.
>Get Valiant to do the assignments. It's... training. Yes.

'Tournament?' You head to your office, mental voice best described as mildly sarcastic, with a flair of disdain. 'Somehow, MY presence at this festival never came up, Russell.'

There's a vague burbling from the other end, that may possibly be an attempt at an explanation. You ignore it, more interested in what you have to spend your valuable time doing tomorrow. 'Tournament. Details.'

'It's just some knightly showing-off,' Russell mumbles, at least sounding apologetic. 'When the games open, it'll be the first chance for players at this starting point to compete against each other in proper matches, and win some decent gear. No fatalities allowed.'

Decent gear? 'What's the prize?'

'Uh-' He pauses, likely looking for the notes, as you enter your office. 'Top price is a sword, extremely high-powered, some hidden abilities to it. Second is a jewel with some scrying powers, and third prize is in-game money. Why?'

>My character should know, in case the subject comes up.
>Those sound too good for a villain to leave in the hands of players...

Settling down at your desk, you try not to pull a face at the small pile of papers someone's left there. One hour, thirty minutes to get these done in? Great.

You quickly track down what seems to be the main priority, the guard assignments, looking over the security for the festival tomorrow. With some consideration, you decide on

That done, you deal with the rest of the paperwork, with all the talent, training and vigour that an experienced librarian can bring to bear.

'Can you do my paperwork as well?' Russell queries.

'No.'

>77

Soon, the paperwork lies, defeated. You are victorious, master of management. And legend shall tell your story; the man who conquered forty-three sheets of paper in less than an hour.

That was incredibly meaningless, you decide, as you feel yourself logging off.

Festival day, and it's clear the second you log in and step out of your office (shouldn't you have actual quarters somewhere?). The atmosphere seems lighter; servants move with more energy and smiles, the scent of freshly cut flowers fill the public areas, and from the windows you can see the grounds are strewn with colourful bunting, guards' armour shining brighter than ever, and various NPCs unloading food and decorations from carts.

Thanks to your rank, you figure you're gonna get out of carrying heavy objects around.

Moving downstairs, stepping aside from NPCs in a hurry, you go over the schedule Russell gave you. There's a large market in the town, as well as music, one-off quests and the like, as well as the sacrifice and yearly blessings at Merrowin's shrine, at midday.

At two o'clock, the tournament begins at Vienta Castle, where you'll need to be to help judge it; that'll likely take a couple of hours or so. Until then, you have five hours to spend how you like.

Follow up on that dragon business. We need to locate a dragon.

Also let's go window shopping around shops, for items of particular value. There are always some in starting towns. Usually they would go to the few lucky and/or skilled first players but we have the advantage on them. We can locate the items now and acquire them immediately when it starts for real.
>>
>>41458491
OP, all that training we are doing with Valiant and the prince and so on to level them as well, will those skills be reset in 6 weeks or will they keep them? It would suck if we had to start from zero again. Same for the alliances (with Valiant as our first minion and the other minions we will get during the trial run).

Getting to town is simple enough; finding room to move isn't. The streets, despite the early hour, are filled with NPCs of all types; merchants setting up stalls in the square and streets, families and couple walking around, some of your guards on patrol for pickpockets and the like.

How many of these are NPCs from nearby villages, and how many were generated for this specific event, you have no idea; you step past two NPCs stringing flowers and bunting across the shop-fronts and avoid bumping into a child, eyeing the crowds barging their way through the once-quiet areas.

How this is going to be with players added as well, you don't dare to think.

'Going to check out the market?' Russell asks, enthusiastic once more. 'You'll be impressed, we put a lot of work into choosing what wares are suitable for-'

'Do they sell metal rods?'

He hesitates. 'What?'

'Metal rods.' What is he, deaf? You keep walking, casting quick glances across the items on offer. No. No. That's... vibrating. No. 'I need a long one. For training Lightning magic,' you clarify, just in case he's turned stupid. Moreso than usual.

'I – don't know exactly what you're planning, but I'd recommend a blacksmith,' Russell finally comes out with. 'Can't really think of any metal rods we've specifically designed...'

That's fine. You're Lord-Commander of the Vienta army, you can handle ordering a metal stick.

For a while, you search for a blacksmiths. One is closed – another seems to have been filled with a number of cows (you don't stick around to ask). The third one is...

Somewhat more unusual.

“WELCOME, TRAVELLER!” the man – short, bearded, clad in layers of bulky metal armour – bellows, motioning you into the small... barn? “Welcome to the great smithy of Kghad-Mzar, where elves come to DIE!”

He stares up at you proudly, teeth bared in a rictus grin, barely visible beneath the mass of wiry black beard. You suspect – perhaps erroneously – this may be a dwarf.

“I'm hoping for an experienced blacksmith to make an item for me,” you begin, not sure if you want to continue.

“An experienced blacksmith, eh?” the dwarf barks, reaching up to stroke his beard with stumpy fingers. “Would THREE CENTURIES training in the MINES OF KGHAD-MZAR do?!”

You have no idea what that is. “Possibly.”

No. It's catch and release only for sharks where we fish. We usually get bluefish or bankers, but nothing edible.

Following the strutting dwarf inside, you peer around the dark internals. It's hot – likely hotter in the other room the dwarf (Ghid Stonecutter, Lv 21) leads you to – the wooden walls lined with weapons and the occasional piece of armour, all proudly displayed. In perfect condition, none of them seem so much as scratched; a testament to their quality?

You may well have lucked out.

Kicking the door open – into a stone-walled room now, a hole in the room open to the air; the dwarf spreads his arms wide, your eyes taking in the smithy's equipment and fire, the massive anvil taking up part of the room, the shining tools placed carefully on a side-table.

“Behold, KGHAD-MZAR, the home of ART!”

You clap briefly. He bows, then snaps straight and smacks his palm against the anvil, other hand on his hip. “Tell me, human TRAVELLER. What brings you to the GREATEST SMITHY in all of Vienta? What GREAT and POWERFUL weapon would you have me make?”

While I like the idea of a shark staff, from the meta perspective it might be unwise. Sharks are seen as evil animals and it might tip some players off that we are the BBEG when they see it. I know, my paranoia is acting up again.

Alas, the final is 89, as the best roll with the correct modifier, although such a high roll disgusts me on a physical level. In future, I'll just work out the roll regardless of how people do modifiers.

Ah, a question that's simple to answer. Good. You brush down your clothes, schooling your features to something more imperious. “I require of you a cylindrical staff made of the most conductive and heat resistant metal available. Adorn the head of this staff with the appearance of a shark. Oh, also have it ready in a matter of hours.”

Stonecutter stares at you, as blankly as the less intelligent NPCs. “A... staff?”

“Yes.”

“Like...” He frowns. “An... elfy... staff?”

This could get tricky. You dumb it down a little, to fit in his tiny, fuzzy head. “No. Like a wizard's staff. Made of metal. With a shark at the top end.”

The dwarf squints at you. “Look, madam, I make good, honest weaponry. Blades! Warhammers! More blades! Bread!”

“I-”

“By Lunkghar's delicately-curled beard, I can't go about making staffs! What witchery would that be?! I'd shame my entire family! Even the dead ones! Especially the dead ones!”

He seems a great deal quieter all of a sudden. Certainly less shouting involved, although why he called you a woman, you have no idea. You're wearing pants – men's ones at that, but you can ignore it for now. Going for the first option, you check your inventory. “I can offer you... 500 gold.”

“Oh, well, never mind.” Stonecutter's hand jumps out to clasp yours, shaking hard. “I'll have it ready in two hours, whale and all!”

“Shark.”

“Same thing.”

Just, a long slender mace, with a shark for a head.
>>
I wonder how hard it is to get 500 gold.
>>
>>41462621
We need to do that AFTER killing the dragon, since that dragon dude will have less of a reason to join us if we restore the forest.

So are we actually grabbing all the tournament winners for the dragon?

We do have access to the castle vaults. Scratch the dragon dude visit. We need to summon a fast horse and get to he castle and back to pay the dwarf.

I have to confess, I haven't put a great deal of thought into the purity of your coinage. Clearly that was a mistake. What are your exact plans? I'll get back to you.

And fuck, I need to get going, sorry. Next thread WILL involve panic and either combat or hiding and letting other people take care of things. It will also involve sharksticks, so if you guys want to keep voting or discuss things to do, please feel free.

Twitter and the like are at the top, I'll archive and then go. Thanks for playing!

>What are your exact plans?

>>
>>41462909

>>
>>41462909
Next thread when?
>>
>>41462909
Not that anon, but purity of coinage, ie. percentage of precious metals in the coins, is a good measure of wealth of the kingdom. The coin has to be worth more than the stuff it's made from.

We could totally scam the kingdom though by changing the currency into something that IS worth less than the stuff it's made from, then exploit it far before the players figure this out.

Or use the coins as an easy way to distribute ritual components for a gigantic ass ritual circle.
>>
>>41462934
Approximately 92% gold, with the rest being copper and silver, says the result of me spending two minutes googling coin purities and fineness.

>>41462956
I have no idea. Not tomorrow, and I think I'm eating out on Monday, depends if my friends cancel. Probably 6pm Tuesday, but I'll post on my twitter when I confirm anything.

This is what happens when you never really expect a quest to get past the second thread.
>>
>>41462909

>>
>>41462998
We're rich and don't have enough transmutation magic levels to Ty that shit.
>>41463060
Thanks for QMing dude. Shits fun.
>>
>>41463108
Destabilizing a kingdoms economy is a project that would be difficult to trace back to us and which would lead to immense suffering befitting our job as BBEG.

Just throwing that out there.
>>
>>41463108
Who said anything about transmutation? Use the power of bureaucracy to massively devalue the currency, inflate the price of gold, or change the official composition of the new currency to use even RARER materials like platinum or....uranium?
>>
>>41463151
>>41463157
You do know we are in a video game right? There's probably four different kinds of coins total (copper, silver, gold, and platinum) that drop from every monster out there and are exactly identical to one another, and we'd have to talk to the programmers about a currency crisis quest before we try it.
>>
>>41463225
I didn't ask Mommy May I when I voted to burn down a forest and I'm not going to start asking now.
>>
>>41463253
Who's that? Anyways instead of de-valuating the currency let's try to do something like de-stabilize the government and start a monster uprising or something.
>>
>>41463151
>>41463157
>>41463225
>>41463253
I don't think this bears discussion.

If my vast experience with MMORPGs is any indication, runaway inflation will happen without our help.
>>
>>41463225
That depends on how they programmed it, and even then we have a lot more freedom before the reset.

We can also exploit the currency crisis to have even MORE massive amounts of money before the reset, possibly having enough money to buy the kingdom's bank near the start of the MMO while doling out ridiculous quest rewards.
