You are Clarissa, a high-school student, Kimiko's Substitute Shinigami, violent murderer, and one of Karakura Town's spiritual protectors.

You managed to survive through your brother's rampage, but the fight was misunderstood by observers who only saw him getting beat down by your friend Naoko. Currently, she's in trouble, probably getting accused of starting a bloody and vicious fight with one of the school's top students. It's all a huge misunderstanding, but there's no feasible way of explaining her actions to normal people that don't know about the spiritual side of things. Or, well, at the very least, you're really struggling to come up with anything sensible.

At the very least, it should be easy enough to get Ren out of her trouble. Just because she was first on the scene doesn't mean that it's necessarily her fault that the desk was thrown through a window. No one saw her do it, and there was no reason for her to do it. Her grades may be average, but she's never caused any issues before.

...But if you're going to use your powers to clear Naoko's name, you might as well help Ren out, too. It feels like there's something inherently immoral in messing with a person's mind, but if there's really no other solution, you think you'd rather bite the bullet than let one of your friends get expelled for helping you.

"Kobayashi-sensei's been out for a while... I wonder what she's doing." Ren muses. You give her a strange look, surprised that she isn't as focused at brainstorming as you are, but then shrug. "And Naoko's been getting chided out for a while now, too."

"...You've still got nothing?" You ask your red-haired friend, but she can only shake her head.

...

>Use your powers. "Well, I'll go and take care of it. Give me a few minutes."

>Use your powers. "Well, I'll go and take care of it. Give me a few minutes."
Really galling but I can't see how to get her off the hook with so many witnesses. I guess we'll just have to be a villain.
>>
So assuming we get everyone off the hook with this, what do we do about Paul? We could just leave him alone but if he ever gets in contact with spirits that aren't pushovers things will get ugly again. And that is pretty likely given our situation. Doesn't seem very sustainable.

"Well, I'll go and solve it." You declare to Ren's surprise.

"Did you think of something?" She asks, looking both impressed and just a little bit skeptical.

"Well..." You can't really help but feel a little hesitant about what your response should be, but you then shrug and try to look more confident. "Yeah, sort of. I'll handle it, basically."

There might be more to 'handling it' than just the principal, you think. Since you won't really be providing a real justification, you'll just have to rely on getting through to him with nothing but mind control, and to keep heat off of him from the other teachers, you'll probably need to go through those people as well. Before you enter the office, you ask Ren for the names of the other teachers that were at the scene. You find out that it weren't just the teachers who came running in, but also the student council president, Michiko.

You doubt that drilling her brain will be necessary, though. You just don't expect her to be terribly vigorous about justice and making sure that Naoko and Ren get locked behind bars for what they've done.

"Seriously though, how are you going to take care of it? Tell me your theory! I seriously don't have the smallest clue right now. Don't hold it back like you're the detective of a crime novel or something." Ren persists with her curiosity, which almost forces a sigh out of you. You look at her, thinking of a reply.

"Well..." You start off like that again. Damn it, how do you even explain this without coming off as someone evil? "...I can make them believe they didn't see anything, or that Naoko's been appropriately punished, or... whatever the hell we need them to believe, really," Ren lifts a brow, still not really following you. "...It's part of my powers. I can do that sort of thing."

"Wait, you're not actually thinking of threatening the school staff with swords or anything like that, right?"

"W-what? Geez, of course not! That's way too much." You roll your eyes. Just who does she take you for? "This thing is just... something I can do."

Ren spends a few seconds in deep thought, but eventually shrugs as though admitting defeat. "Is that what you did to Kobayashi-sensei? ...Well, I guess if... if you think it'll work and all. As long as it makes sure that... Naoko will be okay."

You step to the door and set your hand on the handle. You can hear voices inside; it's a one-sided, scolding conversation. Naoko hardly says anything, even during the brief periods of time when the other speaker stops talking - probably when he asks her a question that she either doesn't respond to or mumbles something softly enough for you to miss it. Before you open the door, you glance at Ren.

"...I don't really like using it." You tell her honestly, to make that fact clear. She blinks a few times without saying a word and then looks away. Her expression is hard to read; you're not sure if she understands what you mean at all.

After that, you step inside.

It was all too easy. After you told them how things 'are', they believed you without question. Now, nobody knows who threw that desk through the window, and there aren't any suspects. Paul got into an undefined accident and that's how he received his injuries; he will also be told the same thing when he wakes up, most likely. You doubt that he remembers anything, as he usually does not after his bizarre fits. Memory loss occurred after his fight with Clay Bone and then again with Mayuri, so you have no doubt that it'll occur again.

You feel a little worried about how his rampages tend to each last longer than the previous one. In the fight against Clay Bone, your brother went down after he only gave off one hit. You suspect that he lasted a bit longer than that against Mayuri, and against you, he went for what you think were several minutes. Even though someone like Naoko can put him down, you're at a huge disadvantage on your own. It seems that spirits have a poor compatibility with him in general.

It's not that you can't go up against him in your human form, but then again... he wouldn't attack you if you were using that. And if he does manage to land a hit, it'll be a lot worse than getting hit as a Shinigami. For starters, there's a real threat of dying to blood loss. You won't be able to keep those wounds fully concealed, as the pain will probably be enough to keep your performance at your regular life chores down. You might also die if an unlucky organ gets struck.

...All in all, there aren't any benefits to fighting in human form.

This worked out suspiciously convenient...gotta stay on our guard.
>>

You think that, save for a bunch of paramedics (who you really doubt will go out of their way to cause a ruckus about this), you've taken care of all loose ends.

Naoko is thankful to you for her rescue, but just like Ren, she's never suspected that you had that sort of ability. Naoko... did look at you strangely for a short while when she found out, but she quickly stopped. You really hope that it's nothing.

By the time you're finished, even the clubgoers are heading home.

There's a patrol later tonight, as usual. You can't help but groan as you remember that fact. But, well, it's an excuse to meet up with your friends one more time tonight. You've decided to split ways until then to rest and think things over.

When you return home, you find a black butterfly sitting on your desk. You wonder if it's your butterfly that somehow got lost and wandered back to your home. You poke it with your finger; as you do, you unintentionally trigger the message it was entrusted with. Urahara Kisuke's voice streams past your ears and straight into your head. His voice doesn't seem particularly serious; it's like he's exaggerating his own formal speech.

"Greetings, young lady! I've received your message along with your request, but unfortunately, the girl you're asking me to investigate is quite the hard person to reach and learn anything about. I'm not here to say that I can't carry out my part of the deal - only that it will take a few days for me to accomplish it.

I apologize for the inconvenience and beg you for your patience!" You snort at his overly polite way of wording it; it's like reading an official, pompous letter to royalty like in the olden days, or something like that, only you're not actually reading it with your eyes. The message continues.

(3/4)
>>
>>41456405
Awww man, still no news on Kimiko? Oh well.
>>
>>41456405
"You can use this butterfly to send me another message, if you'd like, or keep it until such a need arises. Also, I'd like to mention that I won't use this particular method of communication to relay the information related to the person you've asked me to investigate, and instead, I'll have my Lieutenant, Sarugaki Hiyori (the blond and feisty girl you must have no doubt noticed during our previous encounter) communicate the results of it to you directly and in person.

There is no reason for this in particular!" You make a bit of a grimace. Specifically mentioning that 'there's no reason' only makes it more suspicious. "Also please make sure to keep your windows open from midnight to one in the morning from now on. Once again, there is no reason for this in particular, but it will make notifying you easier!"

...Is he giggling here? Maybe it's some weird outside noise.

"Oh, and also, please stay at home during the night. It's best that no one else gets a chance to see you wandering around as an unidentified Shinigami." He's not joking around anymore. You can't really tell if he's asking you a favor or making a demand. "My associate will take care of Karakura Town for the time being, until our business is concluded."

There's a slight pause. After that, the tension in his voice disappears. "...Well, I think that covers just about everything, young lady. I'm not expecting your reply, and you don't need to reply to me at all, but I'm eagerly awaiting it either way! If there is ever something on your mind, don't be shy to ask! I understand that your current situation must be completely new and wild to you, but you can always rely on me for help.

(4/5)
>>
>>41456430
Goodbye and good luck!

Urahara Kisuke."

He states his own name at the end, as though signing a letter. You take your finger off the butterfly, and it lazily sits about on your desk, awaiting further orders.

As you kick back on your bed, you wonder if he made a conscious effort in avoiding mentioning Kimiko's name. You think that the only reason for something like that would be a threat of these messages getting intercepted somehow. ...Well, just means that you'll need to be more careful with revealing details through it.

For now, though, there are some things you need to decide. First, the matter of the nightly patrols...

...

You text your fellow Karakura Town Defenders with news that patrols will be stopped until further notice; or, at least, that you won't be attending them. There is no need to strain yourselves when there's a professional (you feel a little nauseous for complimenting that annoying blondie). Ren replies positively, happy that she won't be feeling dead thrice every week, during the patrols that take place directly after training. She still assures you that she'll keep going to practice, though. You tease her a bit about it, and bait out the exact kind of annoyed reaction you were hoping for.

On the other hand, Naoko isn't particularly happy about it. It seems that she still doesn't trust Hiyori, or, well, the problem may be that she doesn't trust Shinigami period. She doesn't try to convince you to continue with the patrols, but her discontent with your choice is clear. You think her mood quickly changes for the better when she realizes that a lack of this particular obligation means that you'll be getting more sleep. Ren picks up on that, and hopes that she won't have to see you behaving like a miserable zombie during the mornings.

You can't really promise them anything, though. You can hardly rest even while sleeping. Well, you really hope that you won't get another nightmare tonight. If that were to become a regular occurrence...

...It's better not to think about it.

You talk about Paul. You tell them that he's still resting in the hospital after his injuries. They fixed his face, but brain damage is a possibility - if there aren't any other effects, that's how they'll probably justify his memory loss regarding the 'incident' he was involved in. It's convenient, but you really hope that he's okay. Geez, you actually don't remember the last time you've been so genuinely worried about your brother. It's kind of annoying, you really wish you weren't. Not like he deserves it or anything! All of this is basically his fault, too!

(1/2)
>>
>>41457337
"I'm sorry. I got carried away." Naoko apologizes again, but you reassure her that it's not her fault. There was no way of telling whether or not he was pacified, and the risk of taking a chance wasn't really worth it. You hope that Paul doesn't end up with any kind of permanent damage, not only for his sake, but for Naoko's, too. She has enough to blame herself for already.

"So... what do we do with Paul? After he's back." Ren asks; for a short while, nobody can come up with a reply.

...

>>
>>41457404
You bring up the possibility of contacting Urahara to your friends.

"I don't know about that, Clarissa. How would he help? Isn't he a ghost?" Ren asks, and you can't really give her a competent answer. He's the science Shinigami guy, which means that he might know about a better solution than just hoping for the best, and, well, even if he doesn't, he might come up with one given some time. "Well, I guess if you think that it'll work, it... might work. Gah, I wish I could say something more helpful!"

Naoko dislikes it. "He and Mayuri are the same profession, right? I don't think it's a good idea to trust those people with your brother, Clarissa. What if he decides to steal him and experiment on him?" She pauses for a bit, probably to think of further reasons. "When we first met Urahara, he locked us up and tried to make us fight the Menos Hollow, just to see how we handle it. What if he does something like that to Paul and makes him go on a rampage again? That Shinigami's methods are too extreme and unreliable, and he's not trustworthy."

But even if he does do that, if that ultimately leads him towards discovering a real cure for whatever your brother has, wouldn't it be worth it? Well, of course, it might lead to absolutely nothing, too.

"Alright, Naoko. You're right. I won't talk to him about it."

The conversation grows awkwardly wordless for a little while. Ren breaks it up. "So... what do we do with Paul?"

"Nothing big. Until we come up with something better, we just need to keep an eye on him and keep him away from ghosts and stuff like that." You say, to which Ren replies in the affirmative, but does ask what could possibly resolve your brother's 'condition'. You can't really answer with anything.

Naoko decides to voice her theorycrafting. "Mayuri said that he wasn't attacked 'until Paul realized that he shouldn't be there'. I kept thinking about what that meant," The three of you found out exactly what he implied with that earlier today. Naoko continues. "He only attacked because he believed that something shouldn't be there - in this case a spirit. Up until he realized that Clarissa was a spirit, he was fine. So... if we manage to convince him that it's nothing out of the ordinary, it might stop happening."

You let off a long sigh. "So basically, you're saying that we need to make him believe in ghosts to solve his fits?" Just by saying that out loud, you feel a migraine coming on. It's not that it's completely impossible, but the prospect is really, really annoying.

"If we pile on too much at once, he flips out..." Ren joins in on the musing. "So we somehow need to do it gradually and over time. Like, cook up some big conspiracy to make him really paranoid... or something like that. Right?"

(1/2)
>>
>>41458869
"What, like having spooky shit constantly happening around him? That's a pain to set up. God knows how long it'll take, too."

Naoko doesn't reply. She's probably thinking. You wonder if she's keeping an eye closed right now, like she always does when she's deep in thought. Well, it's actually been a while since you last saw her do that. Maybe she didn't partake in any hardcore thinking lately.

Ren breaks up an arisen silence once again, this time out of frustration. "Darn it, I wish there was a simple way of solving something for once!"

...That reminds you of the complicated events back at school. It should have been difficult to resolve them, but you broke through with what's essentially brute force. Could you use your powers to force Paul to believe in ghosts, too? You don't like the idea of trying that. It's like mixing together two dangerous chemicals and hoping that nothing explodes.

You'll keep that option in mind, and only that, for the time being. It's not really possible to try it right now, since your brother is still in the hospital.

After another sigh, you glance at the time - dinner should be ready soon. Since Paul isn't around, your mother will be cooking. And that's great news. She's an absolute master at cooking, though she's usually too lazy to actually go through the effort of it. Other than that, you need to take care of homework. It's been a while since you actually did it properly. You really need to get back on track when it comes to school.

You didn't think that the nightly patrols were such a burden. You feel at ease.

"Are you trying to wiggle out of catching a break again? Don't fight it! Rest!" Ren chides you out a bit. You remark on how she's just trying to be lazy, but to your surprise, Naoko seems to agree with her.

"There's no real issue with practicing our powers out in the open, since nobody will see it. And, um... I also think you should rest, Clarissa."

"Yeah. Once you stop acting like a zombie in the mornings, we'll think about putting more work in!"

You feel like you're being babied, and it's kind of embarrassing. You can't really help but drop it; and, well, they did say that they'll think it over once you get better. If you really want to, you can bring it up again later on.

With nothing else in particular to discuss (other than your loneliness, which you were tempted to try sating with a slumber party or something), you go downstairs and have the most delicious dinner in a long time. Mom can hardly eat - she is too concerned with Paul and acts really sulky and depressed. In the meantime, your dad asks you more about the 'incident' with Paul, though you can't give him any answers, as you 'don't know anything'. After the meal, dad spends the whole evening trying to comfort your mom, and, well, you make a bit of an effort towards that, too, but ultimately, he is much better at it, so you leave him to it.

Without a patrol hanging over your head, it almost feels like the weekend. You go through homework and spend your free time goofing off, and then finally go to bed at an appropriate time.

But before actually going to sleep, you decide to visit Gilgamesh - or the Hogyoku - or goldie; still didn't pick a proper name for him, but whatever. You have a lot more time than usual tonight, so you might as well talk things over with him.

(1/2)
>>
>>41460643
You arrive at his grand palace and have a chat about Paul.

"I can't say anything with certainty, but his powers do seem somewhat similar in nature to yours," The golden haired man shrugs. "It does make a speck of sense - you are twins, after all. And as to how you can resolve this? The plan of making him believe in spirits is probably a sound one. If your brother's powers really are like yours, then his thoughts are the primary source- no, reason for their use. His denial is strong enough to cause him to frenzy, but if he accepts it, there won't be any reason for him to deny anything."

You frown at him. There's something that's been bugging you about him ever since you entered your inner world tonight. "You seem to be in a good mood," You point it out, and his smirk grows a little wider. With a grimace, you continue. "Are you really this happy that I used your powers?"

"Of course. You fought quite ferociously against taking the easy way out, so it's amusing to me that, in the end, you still did." He says and runs a hand through his blond hair. "I actually thought that you'd let your friend sink over using your powers. That would have been quite foolish..." He shows relief at the fact that it didn't happen.

"Well, there was no other choice." You say and plant a hand on your hip. You realize that his smugness isn't wavering at all. "...Don't tell me you actually came up with a solution to that bullshit."

Thankfully, he shakes his head. "I wasn't even thinking. Why would I, after all? There was a much easier way."

...Good. Just means that your decision was justified.

Well, you're not here to listen to his gloating.

The reply is an immediate one. "He's getting better at using his abilities, that's all. Unlike you." Even with something that should have been a crystal clear and simple explanation, he couldn't hold back a snide remark.

You grit your teeth and swallow the urge to fight back. It's not worth it, you remind yourself a few times. It's not worth it. Not worth it.

He's amused by your visible efforts, but ends up just a bit disappointed that you didn't react in a louder way; good. After a sigh, you calm down.

"Screw this," You exhale and feel let a delayed wave of fatigue suddenly catch up to you: must be the stockpiled exhaustion of your efforts and hardships finally seeping through your lowered guard. "I'll go to sleep. Been... having some issues with that, though - I sleep like shit. You've got any ideas to make it better?"

"Are you mocking me, or did you fall on your head and lose your memory?" He makes a sour face, and you reply with a similar expression.

"Got it, heading out." You wave him off, but he suddenly speaks up.

"Wait." You do as he says, puzzled. The golden man warily glances around the room. "While you were here... did you notice anything?"

You think about his question for a bit, but in the end can only offer an uncertain shrug. "What do you mean?"

"...It's nothing, then."

"...You're the one who brought it up, so explain." You tell him. Gilgamesh doesn't like your insistence on it, but reluctantly talks.

"It's nothing important. A little while ago I caught a noise that shouldn't have been there. It briefly made me think that there's someone else in the castle. I searched and found nothing. But I suppose that since I'm... humanlike, it could have been my imagination."

You take a look around. This may not be the whole building, but there's certainly no one else in this vast room. You strain your ears, but you can't catch any noises that shouldn't be there, either. It's deathly quiet, with nothing but unmoving sand outside these walls, so you think that even the slightest disturbance would stand out.

"Well... it's my inner world, so maybe I... did something that caused a noise?" You suggest. He can neither confirm nor deny that.

...There can't be anyone in this world besides the two of you.

There's nothing else to talk about, so you head out. After you return to the real world, you immediately drift off to sleep.

I'd like to end the thread for tonight, it's getting really late!

Next thread will be announced on twitter, but I'll be trying to run this tuesday/wednesday in addition to the weekend!
https://twitter.com/Mushroomgami

If you have any questions or feedback, shoot them my way!

I'll be trying to really speed things up from here on out, and I mean besides my utterly fruitless attempts at improving my posting speed!

Thanks for reading!

Thanks for running! Another session would be swell!
>Here on out
Worry
>>
>>41462298
There's nothing to worry about! Well, besides the usual!

But we'll be finally getting back to everyone's(?) favorite(?) heroine!
>>
>>41462187
Suspicious.

>>41462259
Thanks for writing
>>
>>41462259
Thanks for running. We totally accidentally made that Aiko/Kimiko phantom "real" didn't we?
>>
>>41462346
Mom?

>>41462360
Now that would be terrible.
Though seeing Gil's take on it might be funny.

Thanks, Mushroom

Inner Hollow? Genetic Memory of the Quincy King? Whats in us? WHAT?!

>Genetic Memory of the Quincy King?
I almost forgot what this was about! I dropped the manga right around that point.

Don't think anyone can blame you.

I'm still there out of pure stubbornness.

Granted, you have unintentionally revealed that it is not Ywach, so that's one bit of good news.
>>
>>41462562
Would be too much plot for one character anon.
Clarissa is no Ichigo.
>>
>>41462562
I think the whole Zangetsu/Ywach business is a little silly, but I guess it was foreshadowed well enough. Though I'm not going to dwell into the last arc's stuff simply because I didn't read it and so I hardly know what's going on there.

>>41462577
She has enough super powers of her own, she doesn't need to be a Quincy in addition to all that!
>>
>>41462726
Right!
Gil is already stealing her thunder, having even more plotrocks and super-genes would just make her current power a little sad.
