You are Siegfried Schmidt, a former guard from the city of Morsland. Due to various circumstances, you have become the new wielder of Galadriel, a holy sword which houses a powerful six-winged angel of the same name. Now you have come to the White Watchtower, a fortress close to the border between the Forsaken Lands and the kingdom of Iseria, to train with the crusaders so that you can protect yourself from the demons that might come after you now that the sword is in your possession.

Yesterday, you learned a few dueling tips from Daniel, confirmed that Reinhardt has the hots for Princess Catherine, and learned that someone Daniel knew passed away recently. At the end of the day you were approached by Aleria and Leviathan who suggested using her in the tournament, but turned them down. The tournament starts today, hopefully all goes well.

The morning of the tournament passes quickly. Everyone eats breakfast, wishes each other luck, then those that are participating head for the arena. Once there, you are escorted to the equipment room, where the staff member escorting you gives you one last rundown of the melee tournament's rules. No magic, no enchanted equipment, just straight skill at arms. The weapons provided are dulled and special enchantments have been used to make them less lethal, but there are healers present in case of accidents. Participants will be called forward when it is time for their match, and will not be told who their opponent is until they are in the arena facing each other.

Having explained all this, you are asked to pick your gear. There are weapons of all sizes and shapes here, and varying suits of armor as well. For those who prefer to fight without armor, a simple tunic and pants can also be provided. What should you use for your first match?

You pick out a suit of chain mail and get suited up. Come to think of it, you haven't really worn chainmail since you were still a guard. It restricts your movement a bit, but gives you a little extra protection than your normal outfit provides. After getting suited up, you grab a halberd from a nearby weapon rack and a sword as a backup.

'I should be able to control my strength now, right?' You ask Galadriel, whom you have with you but plan to leave with the others when your match starts. 'I'd hate to accidentally break my weapon again in the middle of a match.'

'You should be fine now, but give your halberd a few swings just to be sure.'

You do so, and find your swings seem carry more force now than they used to. However, you find that you can control how much force you put into each swing again, unlike yesterday when you would unintentionally put more strength into some of your swings than you intended. Satisfied that there won't be another accident like yesterday, you exit the equipment room, and are guided to a waiting room along with some of the other competitors. Amongst those here, you find Justine sitting here as well, equipped with a spear and breastplate.

"There you are. Where's Erika?" You ask, sitting next to her.

"She was escorted to another waiting room. I believe they're dividing us into brackets."

"Huh, alright then. Any idea when the tournament starts?"

"Soon. Actually, I think I hear them starting now."

Now that she points it out, you think you can hear horns being blown inside the arena. A short while later you hear someone start talking, though you can't make out what he's saying. About ten minutes pass, and finally one of the staff enters the waiting room.

"Siegfried Schmidt, please enter the arena now."

Well, seems your up first. You set Galadriel on the ground and ask Justine to watch her for you while you're gone (not that she's going anywhere, honestly). Following the staff member out the door and down a hallway, you enter the arena to the sound of cheers all around.

Morsland had tournaments from time to time, but you've never seen a crowd this big. It seems the stands are absolutely packed with people, too many to count. In a wooden box set apart from the normal seats, you see the king and his grandaughter, along with Daniel and those from your honor guard who aren't competing in the melee. On the opposite side of the arena, you see a man wielding a rapier and buckler whom you do not recognize. Well, at least you're not going up against Celia right off the bat. Now you just have to make sure you don't lose before you even get to that point.

An announcer, using some sort of spell to amplify his voice, clear his throat. "Now, without further adieu, let the 42nd Open Tarrin Melee begin!"

Just like back at the guard post, you advance and poke at his defenses. He does his best to defend himself with his buckler, but he's having a hard time dealing with your reach. At some point he makes a sloppy attempt to smack your halberd away with his buckler, leaving himself wide open. Jumping on this opportunity, you go low and sweep his legs out from under him, causing him to fall to the ground. A second later you have one foot on his chest and bury the point of your halberd into the ground next to his head, a quick coup de grace were this a real match.

Your opponent awkwardly raises his hands next to his head. "Uh...I yield?"

The crowd erupts with cheers, chanting your name as you get off your opponent and help him up off the ground.

"By Aureus, I think that's the fastest match I've seen yet Cedric." One of the announcers says over the crowd's cheering.

"Indeed Alan, I think we might just have a real competitor for miss Celia this year." The second announcer agrees.

"Just what you'd expect from the Swordmaiden's Champion. Everyone, let's have a round of applause for Siegfried and our brave newcomer, Bernard."

You are escorted back into the waiting room, where Justine is surprised to see you back already. "You're back already? It's only been a few minutes."

>"Yeah, apparently that was the fastest match they've seen yet."
>"My opponent left himself open, so I knocked him off his feet and ended the match quickly."

Say, where's Galadriel hanging about? Can we talk to her while waiting for our next match? Does she have a good seat or is she on the sidelines cheering us on?
>>
>>41443470
She was in the waiting room with Justine. I'd say she still has a good seat though, considering the fact she can already see you through your mental link, including seeing from your POV.
>>
>>41443470
>You set Galadriel on the ground and ask Justine to watch her for you while you're gone (not that she's going anywhere, honestly).

So she is right next to us and we could talk to her anywhere unless its a really long distance.

"Fair enough I guess."

The same staff member who called your name now returns with her list. "Justine Hansford?"

Justine returns later, having won her match. Others are called out one by one until the round ends, and the next one begins. Everyone is given a chance to change their equipment if they so desire, but you choose to stick to what you're using right now. Eventually, your name is called again, and you enter the arena once more.

This time, your opponent is a large man wearing heavy plate armor without a helmet. He is carrying a tower shield in his left hand and a flail in his right. Once you've entered the arena, he points his flail at you and speaks.

"So you are the Champion Siegfried, huh? It is an honor to fight you, but I must inform you that you will be leaving this arena the loser, for now you face Pierre the Unmoving!"

You blink. This guy's tone and way of talking is way too overdramatic. Is he doing it on purpose, or is he being serious?

"Seems Pierre is already claiming victory over his opponent Cedric." An announcer says.

"I'm not surprised Alan. This is Pierre's third time at this tournament, and each year he's shown us that he has the utmost confidence in his ability. Of course, considering his opponent, I have to wonder if perhaps Pierre is getting ahead of himself this time."

"Pierre never gets ahead of himself, Cedric, because Pierre the Unmoving is invincible!" Your opponent shouts to the announcers. "Now lets start this match right now!"

Did he just refer to himself in third person? Either this guy is absolutely full of himself, or he's really playing it up. Whicherver it is, he does seem quite strong and he's very heavily armored, so you'll need to be careful.

This could be tricky. Go on the offensive and really drive him back with heavy blows with the halbred. When we find an opening aim for the joints and stagger him, then knock him over the head with the flat side of the halbred.

Well, make him charge us and slam into the arena wall, then jab his leg and hobble him so we can evade him easier.
>>

Try to bait that flail, dodge to his right and wail on him with the blunt side of the Halberd. If you see joints or weakpoints but a stab into them.

You back up towards a wall, planning to let him come to you.

"Is the Champion too scared to come face me? Very well, then Pierre the Unmoving shall bring the pain to you!"

Pierre charges towards you, surprisingly fast considering all the armor he's wearing. You position yourself and wait, watching Pierre get closer and closer, then quickly leap to the side while Pierre crashes into the wall behind where you once stood.

Taking advantage of this, you move behind him and smack him in the head repeatedly with the blunt side of your halberd. As you do, you notice that some of the straps securing his armor in place are standing out. You think to try and cut them, but Pierre pushes you away before you have time.

"Clever move Champion, but it will take more than that to bring down the most electrifying warrior in the Galloway Tournament Circuit."

If you could get around to his back again, you might be able to cut those straps and knock some of his armor off. The question is, how to get behind him?

You try to stay on his right side, away for his huge shield. You throw a few jabs to keep him at a distance, then notice a small opening to attack the arm holding that big tower shield. As you lunge at his arm though, he hits you in the back of the head with his flail, causing you to miss.

>35/40 HP remaining

"You're pretty strong Siegfried, as expected of a Champion."

Recovering, you decide to switch tactics and try to hit him in the head to rattle him up. Unfortunately, he manages to step to the side and avoid your attack, smacking you in the gut with his flail in retaliation.

>30/40 HP remaining

"But it doesn't matter who you are, because Pierre the Unmoving is invincible!"

Those last hits really hurt, but you can keep fighting. Pierre tries to follow up with an overhead smash, but you manage to dodge out of the way, and maneuver behind him in the process. You see three exposed straps, you could try to cut them all now and risk getting hit again, or you can cut one and back out quickly. Or you could try something else, but you'll need to do it quickly.

You go for broke and slash at all three of the straps. It's easy enough to cut through them, the problem is avoiding the attack that comes after. However, after cutting the straps you manage to avoid being hit by dodging to the left, using Pierre's tower shield to help hide you from him. Pierre's flail smashes into the ground where you once stood, and then you hear it. The clattering sound of armor coming undone. It seems all of Pierre's armor from the waist up has fallen off, leaving his torso with no protection other than the padding worn under his armor. You back up, putting some distance between you and Pierre.

"My armor! You dare to-"

You cut him off, charging back in for a series of slashes. You land one weak slash before he puts his shield up to block. With half of his armor gone, this fight should be a lot easier now. You just need to get passed that shield.

After blocking a few of your attacks, Pierre goes back on the offensive and swings his flail at you. Moving to the side, you swing your halberd at the chain, causing it to wrap around the halberd's shaft. You then twist, using your newly enhanced strength to your advantage, putting his right arm at a bad angle and planting your halberd into the ground. Drawing your backup sword, you narrowly avoid a shield bash from Pierre and swing the blade at his neck, stopping just an inch away.

"...It seems Pierre the Unmoving has underestimated you, Champion. Very well, the victory is yours, I yield."

The stands roar with cheering, as you sheath your sword and untangle Pierre's flail from your halberd. Pierre then offers you a handshake, which you oblige, and leans in to whisper something.

"Great job kid, you did good. Sorry for all the trash talk, it's just something to get the crowd excited, didn't mean any offense."

Huh, so he actually was doing all that on purpose. With that, you both part ways back to your respective waiting rooms. Now that you've won your second match, you've qualified to enter the melee tomorrow, where all the remaining contestants will fight at once and the last standing will be the victor.

Back in the waiting room, you tell Justine that you've made it to the melee and wish her luck as her name is called after yours. A staff member leads you back to the equipment room, where you change back into your normal gear and return the equipment that you borrowed.
>>

---------
A while later, Justine returns from her match. You wave hello to her, and ask how it went.

"I...I lost." She says, sounding a bit confused.

"You lost? To who?"

"Erika."

"Erika? You got paired against Erika?"

"Yes, and for the first time I lost. I don't know how it happened, I thought I knew all her tricks by now, but she managed to catch me off guard and pulled my spear out of my hands. I couldn't fight her without a weapon, so I lost."

"Maybe you just got too used to beating her and made a mistake. Or maybe it's because Erika's been training. Either way, if you lost then maybe Erika's better at fighting than you originally thought."

"...I hate to admit it, but maybe you're right. Even if she beat me today though, there won't be a second time." Justine says coldly.

Yeesh. You thought Erika and Justine were completely over their old feud, but maybe there's still some rivalry left after all. At least now it sounds more like a friendly...ish rivalry then the outright hostility it used to be.

In any case, the qualifications for the melee tournament are now over. The joust will be next, followed by the archery contest. You know Roland will be participating in the joust, and Nerillian will be in the archery contest. You could stay and watch with the others, or you could head back into town or go back to the palace. You'll admit, you are a little tired after all that fighting.

Ha alright.

"Hey Justine, want to go see how Roland and Nerillian do in their contests?"
>>
Date with Justine and Galardriel in tow?

Let's melt that cold exterior on Justine.
She and Nirellian didn't get enough character development.

Invite her to watch and buy meatpies for Gal.
>>
>>41446895
Do you think if we casted Mind Link she'd be able to hear Galadriel. We should all have a skype chat in our head commentating on the match.
>>
>>41446946
This

Let's go with this and the date plan.
And meat pies.
>>
>>41446689
"Well, we'll see how you two do next time then. Right now though I think the joust will be starting soon, want to see how Roland and Nerillian do?"

Justine nods, and you both leave the waiting room and find your way into the stands. There are no open seats available, so you make your way to the box where the king and your honor guard are sitting. You see Erika is still there, talking with the others, while Roland has presumably left to start preparing for the joust.

"Ah, there you two are." Daniel greets you. "You're just in time, the joust should be starting soon."

----------
The joust goes fairly well. Roland does an excellent job in his first match, and there are many other skilled riders here as well. At some point, Princess Catherine excuses herself to go buy food from one of the many food vendors just outside the arena, and Reinhardt takes the opportunity to go with her.

A while passes, and neither of the two have come back yet. Roland's second match comes and goes, and the king is starting to get a little worried.

"Perhaps the lines are just long. It is a tournament day, after all." Daniel reassures him.

"Perhaps. Still, maybe I should go check on them just to be sure."

"There's no need to Alain. Besides, people will start to wonder if something's wrong if you suddenly leave in the middle of the tournament."

"I can go check, if you want." You offer.

"Would you? Thank you Siegfried, I appreciate it."

"Don't worry about it, your highness." You tell him, getting up and head for the stalls outside the arena.

Sure enough, the lines are extremely long like Daniel predicted. You search around for a long time, and are just about to give up and see if they already went back to the king's stand when you hear shouting.

"I said let go of me you ass!"

"Who's the ass? You're the one who tried to swipe my coin purse!"

Is that Reinhardt yelling? Sounds like he caught a pickpocket. You follow the sound of the shouting and, sure enough, you see Reinhardt pinning someone to the ground. Wait a minute, haven't you seen that thick cloak before?

"I said let go you pig!"

"Yeah, no. I think I'm going to hold on until the guards get here, actually. Oh, Siegfried? Great timing, help me hold this guy down."

"What happened?" You ask, doing as he says.

"Little weasel tried to snatch my coin purse while I was in line to grab a meat pie with Catherine. Told you something was up with this guy."

"I guess. Catherine, could you go let the others know what's going on? He was worried about you when you were gone for a while."

"Was he? I'll go let him know I'm alright then." She says, leaving for the stands.

"For fucks sake, I'm sorry about the coin purse, okay?! Just fucking let me go already!"

"Well you know, since you asked so nicely, I think I might just-No." Reinhardt says, tightening his grip on the pickpocket.

A while passes, and the guards finally arrive. They hold on to the cloaked pickpocket, and start gathering stories from everyone who saw what happened. Reinhardt is just telling them what happened when Roland and the rest of your honor guard show up.

"Something wrong?" Roland asks you.

"Someone tried to steal Reinhardt's coin purse while he was in line with Catherine. It's fine though, he caught him and the guards are talking to him now."

"Ah, I see. Where is this pickpocket then?"

"Right over there, I think the guards are getting his side of the story right now."

"I see. Well then, I beli-Hm?"

"What's wrong?" You ask, but Roland doesn't answer. Instead, he approaches the pickpocket, now with the hood on his cloak pulled down. You follow after him, trying to figure out what's wrong, when you see Roland's eyes go wide.

"Alfred, is that you?!"

The pickpocket says nothing, keeping his head turned away.

"You know him?"

"Of course I know him, he's my brother." Roland answers. "Alfred, what the Void is going on? Why are you here stealing coin purses like a common thief?!"

Alfred says nothing still, which seems to upset Roland. He frowns, and steps up to his brother, grabbing him by his ear and dragging him to the side.

"Sir, what are you doing?" One of the guards asks, following after them.

"I'm going to have a long chat with my little brother about just what the Void is going on. Come along if you want, but I'm going to get to the bottom of this myself."

Alright folks, gonna call it a night here. Sorry if that last update was a bit sloppy, it's getting pretty late here. Regardless, I'll stick around to answer questions and all that.

Next thread should be Tuesday or Wednesday unless something changes, keep an eye on twitter just in case. Thanks for playing everybody, hope you all had fun.
>>
>>41447465
Thanks for running boss.

One day we'll find out if Mind Link allows Gal to communicate with other people.

I want to use it to have Gal mess with Reinhardt so bad.
>>
>>41446895
>She and Nirellian didn't get enough character development.
Sorry you guys didn't get a chance to eat meat pies and all that before the thread ended. Of course, you guys are able to do that another time if you want to.

On that topic, remember that when I give you guys free time, I usually include option to go find or talk to someone you know as well. If you feel like a character hasn't had enough development, you can always go talk to them or see if they want to do something.
>>
>>41447465
Thanks for running Sparks, always a pleasure.
>>
>>41447506
I'll keep that in mind, though last freetime we needed to prepare for the tourney.

What about you, any questions for us?
>>
>>41447536
>What about you, any questions for us?
Just what do you guys think of the quest thus far? What am I doing right and what am I doing wrong? I know pacing sorta took a shit when my Fridays did, but I'm hoping that'll be fixed now that I have my Fridays back.
>>
>>41447587
Eh I don't mind the schedule trip-ups,sometimes real-life things happen that we can't control.
>>
>>41447587
Really enjoy the character interactions.
You do a good job of balancing comedy and seriousness.
World building is top notch.
Siegfried and Galadriel are great.
I am really looking forward to the crusades.

That said, as you said, the pacing has taken a nosedive. If we only get through half a day per thread we aren't going to get anywhere really fast. I think part of it stems from the Freetime thing you've been implementing but I don't really have a solution for it. Gotta get through some of the crunch somehow right.

But like >>41447643
said, shit happens.

One of my favorite quests man, keep up the good work.
>>
>>41447683
Guess it's a matter of balance between SoL and the happenings
>>
>>41447683
Yeah, I think I might have to speed up SoL interactions a little. I think part of why I've been so slow with it is because there was a ton of PLOT getting dropped back during the Farm and Defense of Morsland arcs and at the time I thought I should slow it down a bit. I'll see what I can do to find a balance.
>>
>>41447745
Its just kind of jarring when we knocked out the Kidnapping, Farm, and Defense of Morsland arcs in 5 threads each.

>>41447807
Ha just as I was typing it too.
>>
>>41447807
Maybe you separate the crunch from the SoL. Like think about it. We learn a new Enchantment or enchant a new piece of gear in a few hours right? Couldn't we have knocked out all the optimization enchantment book in the course of riding to the Capital or hell enchanted most of our gear even if we did a piece a night? Maybe we should save that stuff for short timeskips.
>>
>>41447881
Yeah, that's true. On top of that, I could also probably shorten it up a bit by just asking at the start of free time what people want to do, like going -

Morning
>Read a book
>Meditate
>Enchant gear
>Etc.

Afternoon
>Read a book
>Meditate
>Enchant gear
>Etc.

Basically have people decide what they want to do at what time slot.
>>
>>41447961
Sounds good.
Quick question, whens the last time Galadriel swung a sword?
>>
>>41447997
It's something she practices almost every day in her mental plane. Not something I covered in the side story because I figured it would be too boring for a side story Cause you know, half that side story wasn't boring anyways, r-right?, but it is something she does, and she's exceptionally good at.
>>
>>41448041
Okay.
I have an idea for another mediation training session along the similar lines of thought I had with Asher.

You want to learn how to fight better with humans you spar with the strongest human.

You want to learn to fight efficiently in flight you...

I'm saying we spar with Galadriel sometime for tips and tricks about flighted combat. Both for pragmatism and shenanigans.
>>
>>41448041
Also I probably won't be able to participate this Tuesday so you won't have one of your normal combat chain battle plan guys.

So lazy anons, step up this Tueday okay?
>>
>>41448202
Not too sure on my part because I'll be away for most of the day during weekdays, and I'm nearing my phone data plan's monthly limit.

Timezones are a bitch
>>
>>41448086
That is a fine idea actually. Sounds like an excellent method of training (I doubt we'd find a more experienced mentor anywhere) and getting to know Galadriel better at the same time.
>>
>>41448041
Sparks, I thought I remember we signed up for the joust and the archery competitions as well.
>>
>>41448565
No only the Melee got through. Go back and check.

Lets be honest that would be too much shit to do. Also we aren't super great at horse combat.

>>41448592
You're right, I just checked. I would have enjoyed seeing how we did in the archery competition, as we gave a good show when we recruited Nerillian.
>>
>>41448684
I'm hoping Nerillian smokes the competition here.
>>
>>41448656
Well I just had to make that reference

"Sausage inna bun!Angel-approved!Guaranteed containing pig and other named substances!"

I bet there will be one person that'll give him a run for his money.
