You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, commanding officer of the Court Guard's Ninth Division, and you might have just made a mistake.

The reiatsu flowing through your body from your hollowfication is almost intoxicating, so vast and overwhelming you could easily lose yourself within its depths. And yet you feel wary of it at the same time. It feels dark and cold, almost oppressive in its tremendous weight and density. But despite your serious misgivings, you realize that this technique is probably necessary because of the nature of your opponents.

“Whatcha thinkin' about there?” Starrk muses, curious eyes regarding you from along the sight lines of his pistols.

You shake your head, clearing your mind of unnecessary thoughts. “Nothing important.”

Your voice comes out distorted and resonant, courtesy of your hollowfied form. Starrk's eyes narrow, focusing on you with unnatural intensity. It's almost as if he's so deeply absorbed in the tiniest details of your stance and reiatsu flow that he doesn't see you at all, like a child too focused on counting shells to realize he's at the beach. Outwardly he looks little different now from before, with most of the changes being to his outfit including a porcelain eyepatch and a fur mantle, and other bits of gratuitous fur trim.

“That so? Good, I wouldn't wanna fight you if you still had doubts about that mask of yours.”

For her part Halibel merely observes you carefully from a distance, or at least you think that's what she's doing. For all you know she could be watching the birds, or listening to the sound of distant waves rolling against the sandy shores of her extra-dimensional home. Of the three stronger arrancar in your company, Halibel has always seemed the least inclined towards idle chatter: which makes the times she does choose to speak stand out. What stands out to you now however is how much her release has changed her appearance.

Her body has come to resemble her original form as a Vasto Lorde, with ankle-high porcelain boots and fragments of armor scattered across her body. On her back are two blade-like protrusions which resemble slender shark tails, and on her shoulders are two fin-like plates that protect her neck and the sides of her head. The mask fragments that still clung to her lower jaw have disappeared though, affording you a full view of her face for the first time.

Finally, it seems she decides how to proceed. “You may make the first move,” she declares, hefting her porcelain arm-blade and shifting into a position that guards her midline. “If you so desire.”

In almost any other situation you wouldn't have waited for an invitation. Your abilities, both in terms of your own fighting strength and the powers Tenkotsuki lends you, are geared towards maintaining a constant and fluidly-changing offensive pressure. However Starrk and Halibel are a new sort of opponent: you're not sure how much like hollows or shinigami either one will fight. Discerning the nature of their abilities before going on the offense could prove to be worth the effort of defending for a while.

Question: Is the mask somewhat interfering (I'm using the term loosely here) with Tenko's concentration?
A wide area, non-vocalized kidou might be a good opener. Might serve as a distraction at least, if it lacks the punch.

>>
>>41438697
Alright, awesome.

Though if you were wondering why I broached that topic, it kinda occurred to me that having a limited window with the hollow mask would not be conducive with long incantations.
Then I just belatedly realized Riku's pretty close to Hachigen tier (at least) and add Tenko to that, and that'd probably be more than enough for her to pull it off anyway.

“Think you can manage a distraction?” you mutter softly to your sword.

Tenkotsuki's response takes a second... she must be thinking over her options, which tells you in advance what sort of answer to expect. “I have an idea. You will know when to act.”

“Alright then,” you hiss back at Halibel, carefully raising Tenkotsuki's blade into a readied stance of your own. “I'm coming. Keep your focus, just like that.”

A faint glistening is all the warning Tenkotsuki gives you, as light reflects and scatters around her blade for a moment. You shut your eyes instinctively as you feel a surge of reiatsu pouring out into the air around you, and open them again just in time to see Tenkotsuki's diversion in action: like crimson fireworks, several blasts of reiatsu erupt from every direction at once. One of the explosions momentarily obscures the line of sight between you and Halibel, who seems mildly surprised at the showy display.

Hirenkyaku carries you behind her, but it seems she anticipated that move. As you turn and swing for her left shoulder Halibel is already in motion, turning in air as the tail blades that trail from her back lash out at you.

“The oldest ploy,” Halibel muses as you narrowly evade her counterattack by backpedaling. “I'm almost insulted.”

“Cortando.”

Her arm blade releases a bright yellow arc of hardened reiatsu, like a scything, edged cero. It rolls off the side of Tenkotsuki's blade as you parry it, only nicking your right shoulder as it passes.

“You instinctively covered your blind spots with those fins,” you commend the dusky-skinned arrancar. "I underestimated you.”

Tenkotsuki's voice sounds an alarm in your mind. “Below you!”
(1/2)
>>
>>41439095
You backpedal again just in time to avoid a trio of bright blue-colored ceros from somewhere beneath you, where you spot Starrk with his pistols raised towards the sky. It's immediately obvious what he's trying to do: create space between you and Halibel. To keep you out of your own fighting space, and just on the edge of Halibel's.

“You're quicker than I thought,” he observes as he continues to launch cero after cero skyward.

Very clever, Starrk. But too obvious.

“Starrk, you moron!” you can hear Lilynette's voice loudly berating her partner. “Watch where you're pointin' me! Are you TRYIN' to hit Miss Halibel?”

“Qut being so annoying,” Starrk groans at the gun in his right hand. “You're a GUN! Just shut your mouth and keep firing!”

You can't help but use the moment as those two argue to put in a comment of your own. “That was quite the cero just now, Halibel. Can't help but think you're holding back though.”

“Thanks,” Halibel replies, bowing her head ever so slightly but never changing that cool, focused expression of hers. “Your physical power is also respectable... but it feels like you are still holding back.”

There's a gentle, resonant sound as for a moment Halibel's speed catches you off guard, and you lose sight of her. By the time your eyes catch up she's closed the distance between you, a cloud of what looks like fog erupting from the training edge of her arm blade and pushing it towards you even faster than her first attack.

Parrying that strike feels like it nearly dislocated your shoulder, and Halibel leans in to stare you down as your blades stop in place.

“That won't do.”

“Kuyō Shibari!” you declare loudly, letting Tenkotsuki's blade rest against your shoulder and resisting the force of Halibel's massive weapon that way as you reach out to tap her chest with your left hand. The black, flickering orbs ignite all around the arrancar, and you can feel Tenkotsuki do the same to Starrk at the same time.

“You have a few seconds!” Tenkotsuki shouts in your mind even as you charge Starrk with hirenkyaku. “Make haste!”

Starrk's eyes go wide as you palm his face and let your momentum add to the frightening strength in your left arm. Tesshō, the “Iron Palm” technique Yoruichi taught you, hits with such force that it will stun and disorient any shinigami it's used against. With enough power, it'll crush the head of lesser hollows outright.

“Lights out!” you shout as you pull Starrk clean off his feet and slam the arrancar's head against the ground like a hammer striking an anvil. It's a testament to the man's resilience that his skull isn't shattered in that very instant. He should be down for a few moments at least...

But Halibel's response gives you little time to make use of it.

The massive arm blade of hers would have sliced you cleanly in two had you not pulled in Tenkotsuki's sheath at the last second to take the force of the upward strike.

Tenkotsuki seems shocked as you're sent skywards . “That did not last as long as I expected.”

Halibel makes no effort to pursue. Instead she raises her blade as it gathers a powerful, swirling ball of densely packed water.

“Gota Helada.”

With those two words, the ball distorts from its own momentum as Halibel fires it at you, now more like a lance than a sphere.

>>
>>41440693
It went through a spell that blocks any spell 89 and below with in fifteen seconds. I would say that makes it in the nineties.
>>
>>41440905
Well King, The QM has stated otherwise
>>
>>41440693
So her release state gives her control over water? You suppose that means her shark-like appearance both as a menos and as an arrancar wasn't without meaning after all. More importantly, that projectile is as dense with reiatsu as it is with water, meaning it's not something you want to get hit by. Thankfully its slow speed makes it easy to avoid with hirenkyaku.

You hear the chant for Hyōga Seiran in your mind as you take aim, only to watch as the blast of water rapidly freezes into an icy spear, which explodes as it passes you. You're pelted by bits of sharp ice, but not nearly enough to stop you from casting your own spell. A wave of powerful ice of your own creation tears towards Halibel, whose eyes widen as it nears her. She raises her sword to intercept it.

“Entalpia!” she shouts, and the icy waves of Hyōga Seiran begin to dissipate back into water, swirling and reforming behind her. The force seems to pummel her badly, but her defensive measure spared her from the brunt of the attack.

“A high-pressure steam explosion, using the ice as shrapnel?” Tenkotsuki muses in your mind, stating the obvious. “Color me impressed.”

Halibel merely frowns as the waters behind her grow in volume at an alarming rate. “More power means less shrapnel... how bothersome.”

“Cascada.”

This massive wave of reiatsu-infused water is much larger and more powerful than the quicker blast Halibel used against you, and if it weren't slower as well it probably could have killed you on the spot. The fact that she could use any water in the area as part of her attack, even if you originally created it, caught you off guard.

“Damn,” you mutter to yourself. “I was careless...”

“You were,” Starrk agrees, swinging a bright blue blade of energy at you that you're forced to parry with Tenkotsuki. “I bet even you can't dodge if I fire 'em like this?”
(1/2)

You look down to find that Starrk has one of the pistols leveled at your gut, and at this distance you're not quite fast enough to dodge the first shot. The stream of shots that come after it miss cleanly, but that first blast nearly winded you as it slammed into your gut at close range.

The arrancar parries your counterattack with Tenkotsuki, swinging his own blade casually behind his back before turning to draw a bead on you again. As you try to kick his arm away Halibel joins the melee as well, forcing you to briefly activate Sōkō Shunkō to parry her swing with your foot. It's difficult to maintain it for any longer than that while hollowfied, and so that brief burst is the best you can manage given the circumstances... and it takes a lot out of you. Starrk's next shot misses you as your body pirouettes through the air.

“Byakurai!” you shout, blasting an arc of lightning past Halibel to try and force her to disengage and gain some breathing room for yourself.

“What are you doing?” a familiar voice hisses in the back of your mind... you're alarmed to realize that it's not Tenkotsuki. It's Rosa. Dammit, you must be nearing your endurance limit. Is she seriously trying to butt in at a time like this?

You frown. “The fuck are you doing?”

“I asked first, dumbass. Why're you getting beaten by these two? Swap out with me.”

“I refuse,” you hiss, as Starrk stares at you in confusion.

“You're tiring,” Halibel observes. “How about a Bankai before we conclude things?”

“It'd be a shame not to see it after all this,” Starrk agrees.

DC wasn't stated in the post, which was my mistake. But it was an 8. Because you're fighting the Primera Espada from canon, and a stronger version of the Tres Espada, at the same time.

The latter has gotten MUCH more powerful, and better at controlling the state of her attacks. If you'd been paying attention she's using water in all three states, with enough control to cause La Gota to freeze solid midflight and then explode by sublimating the ice at the core.

That's definitely a task worth more than a DC 7. Riku is fortunate to still be fighting.
>>
>>41441260

“It's good,” you sigh, using hirenkyaku to get clear of your arrancar opponents. They choose not to follow. “Knowing you're all so strong puts me at ease.”

“Bankai: Higeki no Ōjo,” you declare, and you feel the familiar power fill your limbs as Tenkotsuki changes your outfit to suit your Bankai form. Her sheath becomes a second sword, and Rosa's voice falls silent once more.

Starrk lets loose a low whistle. “Flashy. But I can't tell how powerful it is... it's like my senses are bein' smothered. Does it have somethin' to do with those reishi tails of yours?”

Much to your surprise Starrk's sword doesn't disappear. You thought it was the same sort of energy as a cero, but you must have been mistaken about that. Could it be more similar to a zanpakuto, then?

“Tenkotsuki doesn't like it when I use this,” you explain. “It goes against her sense of pride. You should thank her for letting me show it to you like this.”

Halibel and Starrk exchange a brief glance before inclining their heads. It's actually kind of comical that they're bowing to your sword like this, and you can tell that Starrk in particular feels stupid doing it.

“At least your friends are polite,” Tenkotsuki muses. “I wish I could say the same about my usual company.”

“Shut up, vixen,” Rosa grumbles.

“Let's test this out, shall we?” you ask the other two parts of your soul.

Tenkotsuki hums softly to herself. “Seems that combining Bankai and hollowfication grants you an extra tail. Fascinating that it increases your reiatsu so much.”

“And you're surprised?” Rosa sighs. “I don't do shoddy work.”

Hirenkyaku carries you straight towards Starrk at a speed that surprises even yourself: in Bankai your reiatsu is increased even beyond your hollowfied state, meaning you're faster and stronger than you were before. You feel like no shinigami short of the Head Captain, Yoruichi, and possibly Aizen could even touch you now, and at this point you may even have an edge on the Coyote too. And he knows it.

His gun doesn't fire, and his eyes widen as he rushes to parry. Your force drives him backwards through the air as Tenkotsuki's twin blades bind his sword: if he moves it out of the way, he could die. Instead he transforms Lilynette into a sword as well, and swings it at your exposed left ribs only to find empty air.

“Gotcha,” you grin behind your mask as a wide kick slams into Starrk's back, sending him careening wildly towards the ground.

Halibel, meanwhile, hefts her blade as she slips in behind you. “You were right!'

The blade falls heavily against your own swords, which move quickly to parry her attack. “We are strong... together, maybe it will be enough?”

“Hadō 31: Shakka Ho!” you shout, sending a blast of red flames from your fists that connects with Halibel's sternum and forces her away from you.

>>41442197
She doesn't seem that badly hurt, but is deeply surprised that you could perform kidō when she couldn't use her own attacks a few moments ago. “How did you...”

Halibel's words are cut short as you strain against the kidō chains you left attached to Starrk, and he goes rocketing past you. He collides with her in a sharp cry of shock, sending the two arrancar bouncing off of each other as you crash to the ground.

From your small impact crater, you stare up as the dust settles. Halibel and Starrk both join you on the ground, the former facing you directly as the latter circles around behind you.

“Seems you can still cast spells,” Halibel muses. “I'm surprised though, you used such a low number. Does that mean you're still limited as well?”

Tenkotsuki whispers something in the back of your mind, as if trying to keep the information hidden from your opponents. “You still have all four tails remaining.”

“Why are you whispering, dumbass?” Rosa groans.

“It seemed appropriate.”

“Try casting a higher level spell,” Tenkotsuki suggests.

Rosa scoffs. “Forget that, you should learn to use your hollowfication better.”

“Nobody asked you, Rosa,” Tenkotsuki sighs.

You shrug, refusing to take sides for now.

“Nobody asked either of you,” you point out. “How about I do this?”

As Starrk and Halibel charge you from opposite sides you allow Starrk's blade to slice into your side while you parry Halibel's weapon right at the habaki near the base of Tenkotsuki's right-hand blade, allowing it to come to rest there for a moment. Their eyes both widen, trying to understand in that moment what you could be planning.

“Heian,” you mutter, willing the fires to blast out of the blood at your left ribs and from the blade of the sword in your right hand. Each blast is at roughly the same power, enough to cause painful burns to both Halibel and Starrk at once.

Halibel winces as she regains her balance, and Starrk rolls to his feet as his wrists sizzle.

“Not fair!” Lilynette shouts. “What the hell WAS that?”

You frown as you return Tenkotsuki's left blade to its sheath form, and exit Bankai. “That's enough. None of us are in a condition to keep this up.”

Halibel nods in agreement as her appearance slowly shifts. Her clothing returns as the hollow bones retreat, before she sheaths her sword. “Disturbing to think that such power as ours exists, is it not? I have never seen much reason to it.”

“There isn't a reason” Starrk counters after splitting from Lilynette, who collapses from exhaustion. The lanky arrancar scratches at his messy hair. “That feels better... anyhow, there's no reason for it. Some of us are just stupidly strong, that's all there is to it. It's a nuisance.”

“You lost one tail when you cast the spell in your right hand,” Tenkotsuki mentally informs you. “It seems exceeding a certain threshold while in Bankai limits your ability to use spells for the duration of the engagement.”

“Estigmas Reversion gets around that,” Rosa adds. “Probably because the reiatsu is in your blood. It can't be crushed or dispelled as easily that way.”

Speaking of which...

“What happens if I mix healing kidō into my blood?” you ask Rosa.

She pauses for several long seconds, during which the other arrancar arrive while you wait for an answer.

“Try it,” Rosa finally suggests.

“Some help you are,” you grumble, trying to will your own blood to become a focus for healing kidō. Oddly enough it seems to work, and your wounds begin to heal on their own.

“High-speed healing?” Apacci gawks. “No, it's kidō cast through your blood... scary.”

After a few moments you begin to turn to heal the burns you inflicted, only to be interrupted by the arrival of a familiar spiritual presence.

“Am I interrupting?” Rangiku asks playfully. “Seems like you were having a good time.”

“Nah, I was pretty much...” you begin, wiping the hollow mask from your face.

You pause for a moment, mentally reviewing what you're looking at. “If you're here, who's managing the Division HQ?”

“I left Tetsuzaemon in charge,” Rangiku waves her hand, seemingly dismissing your concern. “He wants to be a Lieutenant some day, so I figured let him try it out.”

“That's reckless!” you chide your daughter. “You have responsibilities as a Lieutenant, you should at least be there while he's getting used to it!”

Rangiku shrugs. “I also have a responsibility to grow stronger, don't I?”

“That... is actually a fair point,” you admit, returning your focus back to the task of healing the wounds you inflicted on Halibel and Starrk. “You could have waited until I got back though.”

“But I'm so close,” she whines. “Look!”

At Rangiku's side you can see a figure materialize: a shapely, cocky-looking young woman with red hair and cat ears. She's got a massive bust covered by pink fur, and a pink tail waving idly behind shapely pink hips. So this is Haineko?

“That's,” you frown. “Garish. I take it you're working on Bankai with my daughter?”

Haineko scowls. “That's the idea, old lady.”

“Old lady...” you repeat through gritted teeth. “Old... lady... I'll strangle you...”

“As if!” Haineko shoots back before sticking her tongue out at you.

Rangiku preempts your reply by cracking hre zanpakuto across her head. “It's Lady Riku, or Captain Kusajishi!” she barks. “Show some damned respect for once in your life, you insolent little pile of fluff! If you didn't act like such a rotten brat all the time maybe we could get something done!”

“And if you'd quit acting like such a boring old hag maybe you'd enjoy your life for once!” Haineko shouts back. This is absolutely the opposite of how you are with Tenkotsuki, making you wonder which case is the exception.

“I've been working on Bankai for a while,” Rangiku explains to you, “but Haineko herself can be such a pain. I thought it might help to find a sparring partner.”

"Who's being a pain!?" Haineko yowls, while the arrancar continue to look on aghast.

"Being old is not a bad thing," Tenkotsuki counters as she manifests herself at your side, looking down her nose at Haineko's manifested spirit. "It just makes my Riku more dignified and graceful."

You sigh heavily. "You just called me old too, didn't you? Whose side are you even on?"

"I'd be happy to spar," Apacci interrupts before things can get even more out of hand. "Just so happens I've been doin' some thinkin'. Shinigami can use kidō, right? Well, let's see what an arrancar can do.”

This could be troublesome. It's clear that Haineko is probably a very powerful sword, and Rangiku's done well in getting this far with her. Normally you'd have no problem leaving her to it while you heal your sparring partners, but Haineko's got such a rotten personality. She's irritating, and probably not very helpful. Rangiku could probably use the extra input from a more experienced shinigami, especially considering how dangerous Bankai training can be under the best of circumstances.

“You're thinking out loud, you old bat,” Haineko mutters mutinously.

You shrug. “I just want to help my daughter train... that won't be a problem, right?”

A smile that isn't really a smile but a threat, and a hand placed gently on the sheath of your sword, sliding it just ever so slightly free send a clear message: if Haineko injures your daughter, you'll beat her to within an inch of her life.

Haineko blanches. “Um... sure. That is... fine. Yeah.”

“Good. I'll be over in a minute.”

Halibel watches as Apacci leaves with Rangiku and Haineko, releasing her sword and gaining her horns and fur back. Rangiku for her part releases Haineko's blade into its dust form as the two turn and launch a flurry of attacks. It seems that Apacci is relying heavily on cero and bala, trying to stretch them into interesting shapes, while Rangiku is trying to compress some of Haineko's ashes back into the shape of a blade.

“Focus on the compression, not the orientation!” you shout, hoping that will prove to be a useful hint.

“It brings you pride, seeing your daughter grow so strong... doesn't it?” Halibel muses as the burns on her right arm fade. She's watching the fight as well from where she sits, though you get the impression you're focusing on different fighters. “Strange that I would feel so similarly towards Apacci.”

“They grow up so fast,” you muse, finding a smile tugging at the corners of your mouth. “It's not strange to feel like that towards your family.”

“Family?” Halibel asks, quietly surprised at your use of the word. “Yes. I suppose so. How strange indeed.”

“A Lieutenant, huh? You're hiding something, aintcha?” Apacci grins as she blasts away some of Haineko's ashes.

Rangiku smiles at her opponent. “There's a saying about the Ninth, from back during our deployment to France: our Commandos are Lieutenants, our Lieutenant is a Captain, and our Captain is a force of nature.”

“That so?” Apacci muses with mock thoughtfulness. “So this is all a normal Captain amounts to?”

“It's just a saying!” Rangiku frowns as she parries Apacci's knives with the dusty “blade” of her sword. “I'm not at that level yet.”

“Neither am I,” Apacci admits, standing back for a moment. “But if I can go beyond my instincts, maybe some day I'll catch Lady Halibel and Lady Riku. And this is the first step!”

Apacci slices deeply into her left palm with one of her knives, and raises it as Rangiku dashes backwards with a flash step.

“Gran Reina Cero!”

A bright blast of crimson energy whips at Rangiku, so powerful that it arcs back and forth as it distorts the space around it. But it tracks more or less true, forcing Rangiku to spread Haineko's ashes to defend herself.

“Do it!” Haineko shouts at her wielder. “Now or never, so just do it!”

The explosion when the Gran Reina Cero hits is massive, far larger than one of Apacci's normal ceros.

"Now we're talking!" Apacci roars. "If you could do that, you shoulda done it from the start!"

As the smoke clears you see that Haineko's ashes have taken on a glittering, reflective quality. They must have scattered and dispersed the cero before it had a chance to hit Rangiku herself.

"My Bankai," Haineko practically purrs. "Byakkokiri. I almost thought I'd never see it. Every Japanese sword contains steel crystals, called nie, which shine like tiny stars. My Bankai compresses Rangiku's reiatsu into clouds of these crystals, and further compressing the crystals into a blade makes them truly deadly.”

Sure enough, Haineko's blade has become a silvery edge that flickers and dances like an open flame, without visibly reducing the amount of shining dust in the air around Rangiku.

"Hey, arrancar?" Rangiku asks, panting. "Your name is Apacci, right?"

"That's right," Apacci replies, delight etched into her face. "You wanna try that thing out?"

"At least once," Rangiku nods almost serenely. "Get ready."

Rangiku's assault is faster than you're used to seeing her. As she closes the distance between herself and Apacci she directs Haineko's ashes to lash out at her target. Apacci dodges expertly and fires a withering barrage of bala to disperse the clouds.

"I forgot to say," Haineko adds with a smug grin. "The clouds refract light as well as reiatsu. Sorry."

At that moment Rangiku briefly disappears from view, and even your ability to sense reiatsu briefly loses track of her.

"You've looked out for Apacci longer than I've had Rangiku," you muse quietly to Halibel as Apacci turns to intercept Rangiku's strike. "You have a lot to be proud of."

The dust begins to settle, and the clouds of Byakkokiri's crystals hang low to the ground like a creeping white mist. Rangiku and Apacci are both still standing, seemingly unharmed.

"I don't have anything that impressive," Apacci admits. "But I can harden my reiatsu into a big slab to use as a shield. I call it Escudo... good thing too. If that'd hit me I'd have been toast."

"It was impressive enough," Rangiku allows as Haineko's blade continues to dance and flicker. "To stop an attack like that, it must be a technique worth using. Did you create it yourself?"

"Yeah, after seeing your Captain fight a few times."

“That's enough, you two,” you call out sternly. “It's important to rest up and review how you did if you want to improve.”

The two fighters stand down, following your lead. Haineko disappears, and her blade reverts to normal while Apacci returns to her normal state as well. “That was good,” Rangiku bows gratefully as Apacci scratches her ear.

“Eh, I wouldn't mind doing it again some time,” Apacci replies, trying not to sound too eager.

“Maybe we could do some girly stuff?” Rangiku suggests. “It'd shut my sword up, too.”

“Don't push it.”

“There anything you need?” you ask as you turn to re-open a garganta out of the valley of screams. “I shouldn't be gone nearly so long this time, so if you want me to pick anything up for you name it.”

“Some more incense would be nice,” Halibel muses.

Starrk nods quietly. “A hammock would be nice.”

“You don't need help bein' lazy,” Lilynette briefly stirs before rolling over to go back to sleep. She's certainly one to talk.

“Captain!” Tetsuzaemon roars as he sprints towards you, before leaping into the air and coming down on his knees. He slides to a stop in a prostrated position before you. “While left in charge of HQ I was approached by Captain Shihōin, and shamefully could not tell her where you were! So I was forced to allow her to leave without meeting with you! My deepest apologies, ma'am, I will gladly rectify matters by...”

“That won't be needed, Tetsuzaemon,” you growl. “Anything else to report?”

“Nothing of consequence, ma'am!” he barks towards the ground at your feet.

“What did Yoruichi want?”

“Something about a dinner at the Shiba household, ma'am!”

“What about me?” Rangiku asks, pointing at herself.

“Sadly you were not invited, Lieutenant!”

Ah, so that's it. You figured Kaien would want to hold a celebration for your adoption so that you could meet the other important members of the Shiba clan. Good thing Tenkotsuki cleaned your uniform up for you, and that your kyara wood beads have masked the faint smell of sweat.

“I was told a palanquin would arrive for you soon!” Tetsuzaemon continues.

“Nice entrance, by the way,” you nod quietly.

“You flatter me too much!” Tetsuzaemon shouts in response, lowering his head so quickly and deeply he smacks it into the floor.

You don't really like the idea of being treated like nobility, so your response is fairly clear. “I don't need to be carted around like some helpless princess with tiny feet,” you sigh, scratching the back of your neck. “But do me a favor and send a message to Lieutenant Ichimaru. Tell him that if he doesn't show up at Shiba Kaien's home I'll box his ears in. Rangiku, clean up and meet me in front of the barracks.”

“But I thought...” she begins, frowning.

“I'll hear no objections,” you reply firmly. “When they adopted me they adopted the two of you as well.”

“What should I tell the litter-bearers, ma'am?” Tetsuzaemon asks in confusion, lifting his head to address you.

“Don't know, don't care. Tell them they have the night off or something.”

When you finally arrive at the gates to Shiba Kaien's manor home, you find Yoruichi waiting for you in a formal kimono with four layers, over which she wears her Captain's haori: same as your current dress. It even comes with a matching hairpiece. Rangiku is only wearing two layers, which is probably more comfortable anyway.

“I see you got the message from Iba?” Yoruichi muses playfully. “Good. Did he try to cut his stomach open at all?”

“He offered,” you admit.

Yoruichi sighs. “That guy's too damn serious. He'll either make a good Lieutenant or worry himself into an early grave...”

The older noblewoman pauses mid-sentence to lean closer to you, sniffing the air gently. “You smell like you've been fighting.”

“Is it that obvious?”

“Not at all. I just know these things.”

Rangiku shakes her head. “That's creepy.”

“I always thought so as well,” Gin agrees.

>Rangiku shakes her head. “That's creepy.”

>>

Rangiku panics for a few seconds after having Gin sneak up behind her unannounced, and is forced to straighten her kimono after all the fuss is through. “Sorry, sorry!” Gin apologizes with a smile. “I wasn't tryin' to be sneaky or nothin', I swear!”

You can tell he's lying, and that he got a kick out of that reaction.

“So you came after all?” Rangiku asks, her tone perhaps a bit more somber than she intended.

Gin nods. “Of course. I always thought my ears were one of my finer features, so I'd hate to put them at risk.”

“Well then, that's everyone,” Yoruichi nods. “Good. Now we can go inside.”

Several retainers are ready at the gate to escort you in through the front gardens. They favor Gin and Rangiku with strange looks, but a quick glare from you silences any opposition they may have had to your uninvited companions. Gin looks especially out of place in his regular uniform, which may actually be the nicest set of clothing he owns when you think about it. There's a special corner for zanpakuto to be set aside in as well, where you feel obliged to leave Tenkotsuki. Even in the other room, though, you can feel her in your mind.

Inside the parlor room of Kaien's home you see Isshin, your new brother by adoption, as well as Kūkaku and her younger brother Ganju. Kaoru steps in not long after you arrive, greeting you warmly before Kaien and a young woman you've never met follow suit. She looks like a kindly woman, but her musculature and reiatsu mark her as at least a seated officer.

Kaien waves you towards the table.

“Now that we're all here,” the messy-haired young man greets you, “we can start! Welcome to our newest member, Kusajishi Riku, and... who are these two?”

“My adopted kids,” you reply before either has a chance to say anything. “Ichimaru Gin and Matsumoto Rangiku. I brought them along to meet our new family.”

You make sure to put an extra emphasis on “our”.

“Fair warning,” you continued, “I can eat as much as Yoruichi after a hard workout.”

Isshin and Kūkaku exchange a knowing glance. “Maybe someone should warn the cook to just clear out the pantry, then,” Isshin nods, waving to a servant to relay the message.

“But there's enough food in there to last a week,” Kaien frowns. Clearly he's never seen Yoruichi eat.

Isshin scratches lightly at his stubble. “Not with those two in the house there isn't. In fact I'm worried it might not be enough. That poor bastard's gonna be busy.”

“I'm sure it'll be fine,” Yoruichi waves her hand with a wide grin. “Why don't we sit?”

“Yes!” Kaien quickly agrees to the new topic. “By the way, this is my girlfriend, Miyako. We've left you the seat at the head of the table, Captain Shihōin.”

“Pleased to meet you, Lady Shihōin,” Miyako greets her boyfriend's guests with a practiced bow. “And pleased to meet you, Lady Kusajishi. Or should that be Shiba now?”

“Kusajishi is more familiar,” you admit, taking a seat across from Isshin and the door, with Miyako next to him on your right.

“You honor me too much, Kaien,” Yoruichi raises a hand and insists pleasantly. “I'll sit here, next to Riku. After all, you're the head of this house, right?”

Kaien doesn't try to argue: after all, it's Yoruichi's right to deny the position of greatest honor at the table. He seems to think it's just a trivial matter, but Kūkaku cocks a knowing eyebrow at Yoruichi as she sits next to you on your left. Gin takes a position to your immediate right, forced into a seat by Rangiku on his opposite side.

You've never been great at this sort of thing, but you figure now would be the most appropriate time for what normal people call “small-talk”.

“So, Kaien's found himself a woman?” you ask the young head of the house, who's caught a little off guard by your relaxed manners. “She seems nice. You're a lucky guy.”

“Yeah...” he falters. “I'm sorry, I didn't realize you had children.”

“No big deal,” you reassure him. “They may just be adopted, but they're a part of my family. You've been kind to accept them so far.”

“Now they're a part of our family as well,” Kaein replies, this time a little more firmly. It seems like when the facade of procedure and etiquette comes down, he's a much more confident person.

“I get the feeling you've been standing on ceremony,” you continue as Gin and Isshin fall into a discussion about some new genius at the Academy. Apparently his growth has been compared not too unfavorably to yours and Gin's: a boy with white hair and an ice-type zanpakuto.

Kaien nods, and breathes a sigh of relief. “You noticed, huh? Sorry, but I kinda suck at that sort of routine.”

“Then cut it out,” you sigh as well. “I always found it too tiring to bother with.”

“So that's why you had your Fourth Seat tell the palanquin team I sent for you to take the afternoon off?” he grins.

“What else were they gonna do?”

“Fair point.”

Yoruichi seems pleased that the formalities are already starting to crumble away as the first dishes begin to arrive.

After an hour and a half or so you and Yoruichi are the only ones still eating. She and Kūkaku are chatting amicably with Kaien about more Noble clan nonsense, seemingly agreeing on the fact that it's pretty much all stupid bickering, while Isshin seems to be trying to get Gin drunk with a surprising degree of success. Rangiku has fallen into conversation with Miyako, and they seem to have a lot to talk about. Meanwhile, Kaoru has been talking to you a lot about the Shiba clan's history and role in the Soul Society.

"The cool part is what we can do with fireworks and earth magic!" she exclaims. "I can teach you a few techniques if you'd like; Seppa, and cannon-aiming techniques, that sort of stuff. Though Kūkaku is better than I am at the latter."

"So, like fireworks? Or actual cannons?" you ask.

"Yes," Kaoru jokes a little drunkenly. "But seriously, the cannon stuff is important. We operate the only way the Royal Guard's got to get back to the Palace."

"They have to get shot out of a cannon?" you ask. "That's incredible!"

"And don't you go tellin' anyone about it neither," Kūkaku growls. "Nobody's supposta know, but since yer a Shiba now, what the hell. It's a big freakin' cannon, too. I'll show ya some time."

Without warning, you have a visitor: it's Suí Fēng, and she looks angry. She leans over to whisper something to Yoruichi, who seems to be suppressing a snarl.

"Find him and bring him back to HQ. I'll be there in a few minutes."

"What's wrong?" Kaien asks.

"Afraid that business calls," Yoruichi replies. "I'll be back later though, if that's alright.

Is it one of the rebel prisoners?

And speaking of fireworks and cannons, I kinda noticed that Ururu's anti-Hollow weapon is reminiscent of those traditionally made Japanese fireworks launchers (look up Arai Hand Cannon for reference).
I do wonder if Hats drew inspiration for it from the Shibas in the first place.
>>
>>41446793
“Is it bad?” you ask.

“Very.”

“Then I'm coming too.”

“That'd be good.”

After you grab Tenkotsuki, Yoruichi leads you out the door. Her flash steps are no less impressive than ever, threatening to leave even you behind as she cuts a path over houses and walls to get to the Maggots' Nest. When you arrive it's obvious that something is wrong. There are guards from the First Unit standing around the outside, and the gate has been slashed open. Inside the scene is grisly: every single prisoner inside has been brutally murdered, and left in what has grown almost into a single, room-spanning pool of blood. Some lie with their entrails spread across the floor, while others are missing limbs. A few have had their heads cleanly split open.

“And the most recent batch of prisoners?” Yoruichi asks Suí Fēng, who has only now caught up with the two of you. “The surrendered rebels?”

“They were being kept here too,” the Lieutenant responds with a frown. “They're all here... and over there... and a little bit over there.”

“Damn it all.”

>3d10, DC 6

As you step back outside into the fresh air, you can see a group of about twenty or so Onmitsu who have been gathered together by their peers. At the center is a man without a mask: presumably a Unit Commander of some sort.

“These are the men who should have been on duty when the incident occurred, Sui Feng?” Yoruichi asks. “The Third Unit Commander included?”

“Yes, Executive,” Suí Fēng bows.

“Very well, then. I'll do this myself.”

Riku notices two things: first is that there are no traces of reiatsu at the scene that could be considered "unusual". This means that either someone covered their tracks very well, or that the assailant was so powerful they blew away all trace reiatsu during the attack, without themselves being noticed.

The second fact is that the two rebel shinigami that Yoruichi and Riku interrogated are nowhere to be found, and there's no evidence of them having been removed by force.

“Lady Yoruichi, there's no need...”

“I insist,” Yoruichi replies, stretching her hands and turning to address the captive.

“You abandoned your posts to carry out the unauthorized execution of a student,” she announces. “What do you have to say in your defense?”

“Executive. Our orders came down from the Central 46,” the Third Unit Commander glares defiantly back at her. “We were following those orders.”

“See, Commander, that doesn't matter,” Yoruichi snarls. “We are NOT the private execution force of the Central 46, we are the Onmitsukidō. I review every arrest and kill order personally to ensure their legitimacy. Regardless of any other details, you ignored protocol and in so doing allowed this disaster to happen. You know the punishment you should expect.”

To her credit, Yoruichi does it quickly. The razorwire you've only seen her deploy a few times before digs into the former Commander's flesh, and she channels Heian through it as it rends him into a thousand tiny pieces before he can even scream. The spell burns away the chunks and the viscera so quickly that it doesn't leave a mess behind for someone to have to clean up later.

“Suí Fēng. Please display his broken sword in front of the barracks and have his cohort sent into the Maggots' Nest. After all, someone ought to serve the sentences of the prisoners who were murdered.”

“Yes ma'am.”

“Now if you'll excuse me, I can't keep the Shiba clan waiting.”

On the way back to Kaien's home, you tell Yoruichi what you noticed in the Maggots' Nest. She seems somewhat surprised to hear that two of her prisoners are unaccounted for in the bloodbath.

“It was probably Aizen,” she mutters. “It would certainly fit most of the evidence, but why would he murder all of them but two? He even killed all of the potential witnesses, so why leave anyone alive?”

Unless the Central 46 has some bullshit immunity to investigations that could be waved to anyone, anywhere at anytime, then I'd say that'd be my first avenue to look into. The kill order going through was kinda iffy.

Also a possibility that one of the two missing prisoners (or both) might've been a sleeper, but that seems unlikely after holding them for as long as the Onmitsukido did.

Regardless, looks like we'll have to be on the look-out for 7th Seat Nozaki and his companion (the name eludes me for some reason, can't find anything in the archive).

There are too many possibilities to even consider.

“How?” you ask. “How would that be worse than the whole affair already is?”

“I guess you're right,” she sighs. “Also, you may want to use these when you get back.”

Yoruichi passes you a pair of hashi: copies of the ones Tenkotsuki can produce from her sheath, made by Shōsōtō's Bankai. Yoruichi must have taken a look at them some night while you were already asleep.

“Tenkotsuki must be fixing your table manners,” Yoruichi explains. “She helps you use her set of hashi without pointing them at people, or spinning them, or doing any of the other stuff you did at the table.”

“It was that bad?” you ask.

She nods. “I don't think the Shibas care that much, but Byakuya'd kick you out of the house for that. My parents, too.”

“I'll have to remember that.”

Upon returning to the Shiba household, everyone there seems shocked that the Maggots' Nest would be wiped out in such a manner...

Everyone, except for Gin.

“My, my, that does sound unfortunate,” he tells you. “It would certainly seem like a setback, wouldn't it? But are you sure that they're ALL dead? Isn't it possible that a couple escaped?”

A “couple”, he says. A couple, not as in two people... but as in a romantic couple. He's likely referring to the two missing captives.

“It's possible,” you reply. “But where would such a couple go?”

“Who knows?” Gin replies with a grin. “If it were me, I'd tell them to get as far away from the Seireitei as they could.”

“You know. If it were me.”

Yoruichi looks at you darkly, as if trying to discern if what she suspects is happening is really happening, or if she's missed some crucial detail.

“Anyway, you have my sincerest apologies, Miss Yoruichi,” Gin bows gently to your partner, and for the first time in the exchange he sounds sincere rather than evasive. “I'm sure you'll discover the truth of the matter eventually, and it'll feel so good to have it all out in the open for once.”

"I really appreciate the sentiment, Gin. We'll be sure to get some answers one way or another."

>“If it were me, I'd tell them to get as far away from the Seireitei as they could.”
Hmm. Don't tell me they plan to seek refuge in the mortal world?

For real though, looks like Gin is being as straightforward as he can within the circumstances without tipping Aizen off.

Without a word of explanation, you grab Gin in a headlock and start mussing up his hair. He's taller than you now, but you're still stronger than he is... possibly stronger than he'll ever be if he doesn't start eating better.

“I'm looking forward to it,” you tell him quietly. “It's always good to see you... if you need a hand tell me, okay?”

After a few seconds of silence, a slender arm wraps around behind you.

“Thank you.”
>>
>>41447856
Shit that makes sense.....Gonna have to go to Valley of screams and then go to Kisuke asap

>>
>>41447893
Thanks for the special Japanese hosted session, King.

Did Riku or Yoru ever catch the name of Nozaki's female companion? Really drawing a blank on the archive searches here.
>>
>>41447878
Gin is a good son. we need to make sure he doesn't die in this setting
>>
>>41447891
It's actually quite a good point in the narrative to stop, and the typhoon seems to have taken a break so I'd like to go get some food that isn't bananas or beer.

The next threads will deal with a few things that happen in and around the WWII timeframe as well as one major battle, and then Ichigo and company start to come onto the scene. So that's something to look forward to.
>>
>>41447938
Obviously! I'd rather take his place and have us die instead, That's what a parent would do afterall
>>
>>41447893
