"This is going to require some finesse." You set your sniper rifle aside. "Karl, what's the status of our forces?"

"Our group has suffered some casualties, but nothing catastrophic," Karl says. "I'm not too sure about the other groups, but from we can tell, the squads that were racing through the tanks and mortars took most of the damage. Not enough to throw the whole plan off, but they'll be a weak link."

"We can shore up any weaknesses," you say. "Probably. Anything else?"

"Not much," Karl says. "Our squad is ahead of the pack, so the others will follow your lead if you have a plan."

You don't have a plan. You just need one, rather desperately at that.

The Gallian squads are breaking through, but they're completely disorganized. You can keep fighting through, but your options and your ability to coordinate attacks will be severely impaired, to put it lightly.

On the other hand, the Imperial forces before you are tightening their defensive formation and getting ready for your assault. They've taken up position on a small hill and are fortifying it on all sides using lines of sandbags, supply trucks, shocktroopers and tanks. They don't have much right now, but any time you use to prepare is time they can use to entrench themselves as well.

"Okay, give the order to slow down," you say. "We'll regroup first, and then we'll find some way to crack the Imperial defenses."

"Yes, sir," Karl says. "I'll pass on the message."

Your squads slows down and then stop. The squads around you follow your lead. The Gallians form a loose line, which tightens up as messengers run back and forth with requests for reinforcements. The squads responsible for attacking the other fronts notice what you're doing and prepare their formations as well. It doesn't take you much time - less than an hour - but that's time the Imperials have as well.

The Imperial position looks almost like a perfect square. The first line is made up of sandbags, rocks and whatever else they could grab as cover, backed by a neat row of shocktroopers and lancers. There's a line of tanks just a little behind them. The hill itself is covered by a variety of soldiers. You can't identify them from here, but scouts, engineers and snipers are most likely. You don't see any shields, so they probably don't have any fencers, at least not in their primary defense line.

Breaking their lines won't be easy. These are General Reinhard von Lohengramm's personal troops; their training and discipline will be excellent. However, you don't have the numbers needed to surround them on all sides. You need a strategy that can end this battle quickly.

>Close in on them from three sides.
>Go for a mass assault on one side.
>Use a distraction to hit their blind spot.

You can't contain them for a siege and attrition would only give you a slight advantage. You're going to need some sort of surprise attack.

"We'll create a distraction and hit them from a blind spot," you say. "Schreiner, pass the word. Let people know from suggestions."

"Yes, sir," Schreiner says. "Do you think the Imperials will take the bait?"

"No, but it'll divert their resources. They'll need to get ammunitions and medical supplies to the front lines, so it'll be a little difficult for them to deal with a surprise attack elsewhere. It won't be much of an advantage for us, but I'll take what I can get."

"I'll get to it," Schreiner says.

It takes a little longer for the messengers to get around this time, but other captains had the same idea as you did. A distraction would allow a small squad to drive a nail through the Imperial line and reinforcements from the main group will help widen the gap. There'll be a time gap were the assault squad will be isolated and surrounded by hundreds of Imperials with no hope of escape until the Gallian reinforcements arrive, but risk is part of the job.

You've received a few suggestions for distractions, but you need to decide who's going to take care of the assault first.

>Volunteer for the assault. This was your idea, so you might as well own up to it.
>Screw this, another squad can handle the suicide mission for once.

"Team, gather up!"

Moeller exits her tank and the squad members gather around you for your orders.

"Here's the plan," you say. "The Gallian forces will cause a distraction to allow a small squad to attack the Imperials and create an opening in their formation. After that, the rest of the Gallian army will conduct an overwhelming assault on the Imperials to completely break their defense lines."

"Let me guess," Stroheim says. "We're the ones who are going to take care of the initial attack."

"Correct, Stroheim," you say.

"Of course," Stroheim says. "Who else would take care of the suicide mission?"

"At least we've had a lot of practice surviving really dubious plans," Leifstel says. "Better us than anyone else."

"That still leaves the distraction," you say. "The first option is mortars. They'll force the Imperials to keep their heads down and the explosions will cover our approach."

"You mean… they'll be shooting mortars at us?" Kreuss asks.

"More like they'll be shooting mortars at the area in front of us," you say. "The second option is that the army stages a light attack on three sides while we attack the fourth. The approach will be less dangerous, but it'll take significantly longer for our reinforcements to arrive."

"Do we have any other options?" Moeller asks.

"There is a third option," you say. "The Gallian will launch a series of short hit and run attacks. We'll join one of them, but we won't run after we're done. We'll keep advancing and attack the Imperial line. It's the safest option for us since reinforcements will be close by, but it's also the least likely to succeed."

"So, no miracle solution," Schreiner says. "Which plan are we going with, sir?"

The other members of your squad simply shrug and remain silent, leaving the final decision to you.

>"We'll use the mortar cover."
>"We'll attack from the rear during a three-pronged assault."

"We'll use the mortar strikes as cover," you say. "It's dangerous, but reinforcements won't be too far away and if we do it right, the bombardment will soften the Imperials up a bit."

"At least it'll make for a great war story once we're done," Leifstel says.

"Damn right," you say. "Schreiner, pass the word. Let us know as soon as the mortar teams are prepared. Moeller, prepare the tank's mortar cannon as well. We'll use it to provide additional cover as necessary."

"Yes, sir." Both Schreiner and Moeller respond.

Setting up the mortar teams across all three sides of the Gallian army takes up yet more time which the Imperial use to further strengthen themselves, but there's not much more they can do at this point and it also gives you time to grab something to eat.

"Captain, the mortar bombardment will begin in a few minutes," Schreiner says.

"Excellent." You stand up and climb on your squad's tank. "We'll have Moeller head in first. The tank can cover us from stray bullets and mortars. Let's go!"

You jump down and wait for the mortar strikes to start. There's only a few at first, but the rhythm rapidly increases until all you hear is one continuous explosion.

The tank gets rolling.

Mortars all around you, but thankfully, none of them fall on top of you. The sand and smoke from the explosion masks your approach well enough and Moeller throws in a few shots as well when she feels the bombardment is too light in your area. The Imperials counter with their own mortars, but they're not aiming at you. Both armies are currently stalemated; soldiers at the very front are keeping their heads down, but the odds that anyone's going to get it are actually quite low at this distance.

You cross the distance between the Gallian army and the Imperial camp surprisingly fast. You see a small number of Imperials directly in front of you: one tank, two shocktroopers and one lancer. Taking them out would only put a small dent in the Imperial army, but a small dent is just what you're looking for.

Your tank is your greatest asset for now, both in terms of defense and offense. You can't afford to let anything happen to it before you've even breached the Imperial line.

You stop for a moment and raise your rifle at the Imperial lancer. It's hard to get a good shot when there are mortars falling and exploding all around you, but at this distance, you'd retire on the spot if you missed. You pull the trigger and put a bullet right through the lancer's skull. He falls to the ground and the nearby soldiers immediately realize what's happening. The shocktroopers raise their weapons to fire at you, as does the Imperial tank.

"Get behind the tank!"

The squad assembles behind Moeller as she leads the charge. A shell bounces of your tank's hull, as two dozens of bullets. Fortunately, the barrage doesn't start until your squad is well covered.

You step aside a little to see what's ahead. The enemy tank is still there, as are the two Imperial shocktroopers. Other Imperial soldiers are looking your way, but they're under mortar bombardment - only the area closest to you isn't getting shelled. The tank will make it extremely difficult for you to ram it, but the shocktroopers make it impossible for you to manoeuvre around and hit the tank's weak spot. You can try to take the shocktroopers out first, or you can hope for a lucky shot at the tank. It's not like you need to blow the whole thing up; you just need to damage it enough that it can't fire anymore.

"Nelson!" You yell. "Get the tank!"

"With pleasure, sir!"

Nelson steps out from behind the squad's tank and hefts up his lance. He fires, sending a projectile screaming over the battlefield. It slams into the enemy tank and explode. You wait for the smoke to clear.

The Imperial tank didn't explode, but the front is badly scorched and it looks like the turret is warped. It's no longer capable of combat. That's one major problem solved. Now, your own tank can proceed unopposed.

You still need to deal with the Imperial shocktroopers though.

"Fencers!" You shout. "You know how this works!"

"Yes, sir!"

Leifstel and Schreiner charge ahead, holding their shields in front of their bodies. They leap over the sandbags and stab at the two Imperial shocktroopers, who are powerless to defend themselves. After a few more slashes for good measure, they step back and stand guard, waiting for more opponents.

You take a flare gun from your pocket and fire high into the air to signal your success. Nearby Imperial soldiers finally realize you're here, but the continued mortar bombardment combined with a few shots from your squad prevents them from advancing much. Behind you, the Gallian troops have begun their advance.

You look up the hill where the General is waiting for you and the rest of the Gallian army. You'd be stuck alone fighting your way through his personal guards, but you only have the Imperials flanked on three sides. If you take too long, they might be able to fall back.

Besides, the Gallian forces are getting closer and closer and have already replaced the mortar bombardment with bullets. They'll catch up with you soon enough.

"Keep moving!" You yell. "We're pushing through! We need to keep our momentum going!"

"Yes, sir!"

Leifstel and Schreiner surge forward to block people with their shields. Moeller notices what's happening and drives her tank towards the Imperial forces, happy to crush them if they won't get in the way. You follow up close behind them.

It's time to finish this.
