Ask Languid Anything: ask.fm/HellbornQM

Your name is Sierra Beckhoff, and you are hellborn – part mortal, part demon. You are travelling cross country on the ultimate road trip with your friends to gain power, zany antics, and wings.

Except you’ve run into an unexpected delay. Heading up a remote road on the Pacific coast, you made a pit stop in the quaint country town of Porthcawl, only to find you apparently made a dangerous detour... into the Twilight Zone.

It’s a good show. But it’s time to get the hell out.

Sanity: 92

“Keep going!” Ro shouts, bursting into white glory in preparation for the onslaught of the sea.

“No, let’s take a break for a second!” you shout back.

Xan follows at a run behind you, almost tripping over herself keeping up the speed. You have to get to the car, but you’ll have to keep Xan safe. The tidal things advancing up the beach aren’t menacing taken separately, but if you let one of them bog you down for just a second, you’ll be swarmed and buried under their masses.

Ro understands the danger as well, without words. She pulls up a little short so she can run beside Xan.

Reeber lopes along almost sideways just a couple strides ahead, refusing to take his eyes off the beach for an instant.

You’ve got too far to go – your SUV is at the extreme end of the line of cars, and you only have a matter of moments before the entirety of the Pacific’s crypto-zoolological populace spills over you.
>>
>>41389934

Lucky for you, you have a mobile roadblock up your sleeve. With a wave of a hand and flare of will, you call forth Crabby. Out of nothing, the armor plated, many-tentacled slug burns into being in a volcanic flash, about the size of the SUV you’re fleeing to.

“Mrrrh!” Crabby rumbles, knowing your will instinctively. The slogbuh slithers forward to greet the incoming tidal wave. You’re about half-way to the vehicle when he meets the front ranks of scurrying crabs and semi-legged fish.

The little things of the ocean swarm over him uselessly while he rears up his blackened, beaked maw and spits a thick, phlegmy fluid all across the man-sized stony lobsters and flailing jelly-fish-esque things heaving forward behind them.

The acid glue sizzles at the sea creatures, eating away their flesh, turning their bodies to mush, and bogging them down better than rubber cement.

The wave slows and stops before the armored slogbuh. But the front is much wider than just the dozen yards before Crabby. The tide of creatures ebbs around the acid block, and wraps around with strange speed. Within moments, Crabby disappears under a writhing mass of crustaceans and amphibians.

Sharp cracks split the air, the sound of Crabby splitting shells with his beak or crushing them with his muscular tentacles.

Suddenly you’re at the SUV, parked on a pack of coarse gravel alongside a dead tree. Crabby’s followed along through the mire of sea things on a parallel course, crushing everything in his path and coating them in acid. His efforts are taking up the bulk of danger, but more yet spills past. Even now, little crabs and things clamor around your feet, attempting to pinch you. You crush one of the more uppity ones under your heel.

Ro sprints around to the driver’s side. “Xan, keys!”

Xan glowers. “You have the keys!”

Crap. No keys. You don’t have time for this. (+4 Stress: 29)

Well, I guess we could do that. Might wanna summon the Ashwight to keep the sealife off us too.

Can we stuff our shadow into the lock and open it that way? We've done shadow lockpicking before. Or cornerstep in and unlock the doors for everyone. Hotwiring's gonna piss off the rental place, but better than being dead.
>>
>>41390087
Stuff the wiring back up in the panel and they'll never know so long as we can find the key somewhere.

Actually, we should probably check to make sure the fish people didn't just leave it up in the mirror. If it's not there, then it's probably in some big key jar. Or they threw it in the ocean but I really hope they didn't do that.

Yeah, it was a great idea to freak out, leaving the car unguarded and two non-combatants alone together, and being useless. Oh, but she killed a bunch of crazy weak fish people that was totally useful.

That shit needs to be dealt with, we're the Imperiate remember? Not now, but after. Hell, if anything we can sympathize with that kind of Fuck up. It'll be interesting to see Moria's reaction too given her recent discovery of our own rage issues.

Anyways, I'm going to bed which is why I mentioned it, but y'all feel free to vote against it if you want.
>>
“I’ve got it,” you say, stepping up to the car and skinnying through between the door and the frame and finding yourself in the passenger’s seat. You hit the unlock and climb over into the driver’s seat while Xan throws herself in.

You check the sun visor and the glove compartment, but you don’t find any keys. “Probably in a jar somewhere,” you mutter. You throw open the door so you can yell to Ro. “Give me a second to hotwire it!”

Ro nods and runs off with Reeber. You watch in the rear view mirror as she throws up a tall shimmering barrier wall behind the SUV. The local sea life collides against the barrier ineffectually, but rapidly begins piling up on top of themselves. Crabs and leathery jellyfish things start oozing around the sides toward the car.

“Make it quick!” Ro says, pulling her handgun from its shoulder holster and popping a few shots at the bigger, more menacing creatures while she maintains the wall. Reeber darts back and forth, ripping up anything that gets too close. But the size of the things he’s dealing with is rapidly increasing.

You snap off the panel under the steering wheel, and take a second to figure out what wires go where.

“What is this?” Xan asks, hovering over your shoulder.

“I’m getting us out of here,” you say, finally finding the right wires. You cut the ones you need to cut and touch a couple together. The engine rumbles to life, and you twist your handiwork up so it’ll stay that way. You lean out of the car. “We’re leaving!” you shout, punching the button that opens the trunk.
>>
>>41390620

Rowan abandons the shield wall which immediately fails – creatures come spilling forward one over another. Ro darts away and hops into the back, hauling Reeber up with her. Reebs flashes into his light-weight German Shepard form to aid the process.

As soon as they’re in, you hit the gas and speed out onto a gravel road, crushing sea shells and scaly things underneath the tires as you rip off down the road back into the shadowy forest.

Except there’s not much of a road, and you find yourself having to put the four wheel drive to use to avoid running into trees.

“Goodness gracious,” Ro breathes.

You breathe a little easier too. The car smells charmingly fish-free.

Yes, and that only completely ignores the fact that she's just dangerous not a combatant. You'll note that she didn't keep the car from getting stolen or regroup with us etc.

Whereas that's Xan's actual job. Instead we found here Fuck in around in the woods having failed all of her mission objectives and too exhausted to help, in fact she is now a burden.

She fucked up. Calling her on it is the right thing to do, she's not a child or a princess.

You seem to think I want to ignore it. No. I want to find out what the hell happened, I just don't want to jump right into chewing her out as you proposed. In case you forgot, the fish things blindsided us and Ro with their weird whatever they did, and there are lots of them here. And the entire reason we came here was to get some medicine for Xan to stop being sick everywhere. You're acting like this is 100% her fault, a complete bed-shitting where she didn't do anything in the interests of helping Moriah and Vik, when it almost certainly wasn't.

Being the one source of light in a haunted forest by using the headlights doesn’t seem like a good plan. Instead, you roll down the window and lean out into the wind, letting the shadows guide you. You have a general direction to head in, thanks to your connection with Monster. You’d like to check up and see how he’s doing, but seeing through another being’s eyes is worse than texting when it comes to impeding driving awareness, so you pass.

“All’s well on this end, captain,” Monster reports, sensing your curiosity.

“Good,” you say to yourself. You squint against the wind. You keep driving fast, but not too fast, through the forest. You’ve picked up a dirt road, and that at least gives you something to follow along. It strikes you that none of this would be necessary if Xan hadn’t lost the car in the first place.

You raise your voice so you can talk to her without pulling back into the car. “What happened back there?” you ask.

You feel an overpressure of anger and shame from Xanissil. “I failed you,” she says from the passenger’s seat. “I was incautious.”

You hear the trunk slam shut, and Rowan climbs over into the seat behind you with Reeber. “We got blindsided. It happens,” she says. “What made you lose your cool?”

“Watery things without faces,” Xan replies, a disgusted feeling oozing from her. “There were many of them bunched together. I thought to drive them back with blood and fury, but they proved resilient, and... I had to direct myself away from our friends.”

Well. At least it wasn't you who freaked. You doubt you would have had that kind of composure.

“We’ll get them back,” Ro reassures her. “Sierra, you know where they are, right?”

“More or less,” you reply.

You spot movement out of the corner of your eye. Something fleets between the trees, keeping pace with the SUV. But the blotches of color from the dim purple sky above, even just barely peeking through the trees, makes it difficult to pick out details at this distance.

>How fast exactly were those things without faces?

“I think I see one of those faceless things now,” you say. “I think one’s following us out in the woods.” You resist the urge to speed up. You’re on a cruddy forest road, and this is a rental. Even if Cass talked you and Ro into getting the insurance on it, it’s your only ticket out of here, and recklessness with your most valuable resource is a no go.

“I’ve got it,” says Rowan, diving into the back and coming back with a shotgun. She hits a button on the dashboard that opens up the sunroof, and forces her way up, one boot on your arm rest, the other on Xan’s – she braces herself back against the opening and starts thumbing in shells with care.

“You’ve done this before,” you observe, trying to curb your fascination so you don’t drive into a tree.

“Only once or twice,” she demurs. She pumps the action and readies the weapon. “You said from this side, right?”

“I’ll scout it just in case,” you say. With a flicker of concentration, you send out the ashwight. You don’t exactly see it as anything more than a bulge of shadow, emanating out from you. It glides swiftly along, easily keeping pace with the car as you drive, and moves out into the trees.

An unearthly howl echoes over the sound of the wind as your summon catches the creepy thing unawares. Sucks you have to focus on driving.

Xan snaps back the action of the Uzi you were keeping under the passenger’s side seat. “It is dead?” she asks.

Rowan suddenly swivels around. “Keep driving,” she directs you, shouldering her weapon, alighting with divine light, and pulling the trigger. The gunshot booms with righteous thunder, and you hear another ethereal cry. “Xan,” she says, pumping another shell in, “I could use your help!”

Xanissil by kicking open her door, grabbing the frame, and leaning out with one hand on her weapon. She lifts it at whatever’s behind you, and starts letting off short, controlled bursts, each flashing with disconcerting light.
>>
>>41392364

You try to shield your eyes from the light show – it’s screwing with your vision. But you’re not going so fast it’s impossible to steer around obstacles, even when you’re blinded by gunfire every couple seconds. A tree suddenly looms before you in the middle of the road, and you swerve around – Xanissil’s claws dig into the door frame, but she stays in – Rowan fires a shot that goes wild, but she recovers without issue.

Then you come to a straightaway and floor it, air blasting against your face and waving your hair backward. The dirt road becomes crumbling asphalt, and up ahead, you see the withered heights of the paper mill.

Every few seconds, you catch another despondent wail from behind you, your ashwight doing its thing, apparently. You can feel the surge of its success from your connection with it, a deep, dark joy at the sport of the kill.

And then there’s a thrill of surprise, a flash of incredible pain, and the connection snaps.

Ro catches the look on your face and looks down at you, eyes wide in the dark. “What is it?”

“Something ate my ashwight,” you say evenly.

Xan curses and pulls herself back in the car.

Monster’s gravely voice grates in your mind. “Coming in hot. Don’t run us over.”

You wonder what he means, but suddenly you feel his presence close. Ahead of you, running out from between a bank of decrepit buildings, you spot Tiger. Something strange and angular, and large, pounces out behind him, grinding to a sudden halt. Two figures jump off the larger thing’s back – Moriah and Vikrama.

“I see them,” you say.

Xanissil and Ro search the darkness, having much more difficulty than you.

I think we should leave Moria's & Vik's paper monster as rearguard, have Monster scout ahead as a spotter w/ Tiger doing intercepting if possible.

An air rifle might be better, due to recoil issues. They can actually be pretty deadly, and with his flying/stealth build he can SoS the bullets and be a surprisingly effective stealth sniper.

With modern Pre-charged pneumatic guns you can even get up to 0.50 caliber guns for large game.

I think it would be fun to have him do fly-by Voice of One Thousand Teeth on enemies.

You slam on the brakes, sliding to a halt beside Mori and Vikrama. “Come with me if you want to live!” you shout.

“Thank God,” Moriah says, hopping into the SUV.

You look past them to the thing beside Tiger. It’s too thin in places, all angles and folds. Its paper claws and teeth are glossy with blood.

It looks like a big cat. “Is that freaking origami?” you ask, very impressed.

“It’s just a paper tiger,” Vikrama replies quickly, following Moriah into the car. She pulls the door shut behind her and locks it, and takes a quick count of everybody inside. “All in, go go go!”

You send commands to your summons, and think up a couple hellhounds by your door while you’re at it. Monster needs to scout out the road ahead.

He swoops down with a angered “Fine!” before flying off to do as you will.

“Vik, if you can order that thing around, tell it to stick with my summons and kill anything that moves!” you tell her.

VIkrama frowns in concentration, and then nods.

Satisfied, you send Tiger with your two hounds back to delay whatever’s on your bumper, and hit the gas once more. You screech off into the night while your joint task force rear guard goes back to buy you more time.

“Sierra, bless my weapon with the word of your power!” says Xan holding an Uzi mag out for you. You blow on it for luck, though secretly you sneak your shadow into the convines to imbue its contents with undiluted negative energy. (-2 PP: 32)

Xan shoves the fresh mag into her weapon.

Rowan beckons down from the sunroof with a hand. “Guys, hand me the grey satchel with all the grenades in it – it should be under the back seat. And get me my NVGs!”

“On it,” Vikrama replies, rifling through the car’s stuff.

Moriah, meanwhile, just sinks back into her chair. “I’m ready to leave,” she says flatly.

They actually have semi and full automatic PCP Airguns.

We could probably get Harvey to do an enchantment as well to make it lighter for Monster, or have a little stand.

Goddamn, that would be OP with the angles he could get. It's like X-Com all over again.
>>
Let's not sell Monster short here. Let him show what he can do.
>>
>>41393334

You drive on while Rowan straps her goggles onto her head and switches out the shotgun for a fancy assault rifle you don’t know the name of.

The road ahead looks clear enough, and you really start putting on the speed.

Monster’s voice comes in your head. “There’s a mob of fish on the way out, and there’s a little bit of a road block. Read as three or four cars parked in the middle of the road. You’ll reach it in like three minutes.”

>Jokes on them. You’ll hoof it cross country around their whole parade.
>You’ve got enough magical firepower here to cut through anything. You’ll figure it out when you get there.
>No time to take detours or slow down or anything. With Xan’s help, you can get some blood magic ready and turn the car into a shadow bulldozer.
>Moriah should have enough power left to do her ultimate death cannon special move and cut your way through.
>Send Monster in to harass them. He should be able to wreck the necessary havoc to disperse the crowd.

We also have that landmaster ability that lets us supercharge a spell once ever couple days.

Reminder that this thing exists. We should probably use it here if we're going for plan shadowdozer.

“They’ve got a roadblock up ahead.” Even as you tell everyone, you give Monster the green light to raise hell as your vanguard. You get flashes of him swooping forward with a whistle, dragging jagged shadows in his wake.

“I can take care of that,” Rowan shouts down from her perch..

“I don’t want you pumping all your power into ultimate car wrecker 2000,” you yell back. “We might need it later. Vik, take the wheel.”

She clamors forward eagerly, though with a feeling akin to panic in her heart. She wiggles around Rowan’s legs, and tries to figure out how to do the thing they do in movies where they switch places. “This is a lot harder than it looks on TV,” she comments.

You keep your shadow on the wheel and the pedals and shimmy past while she takes up your seat, and you go to the back and hit the light so there’s something to work with. You need an inscription, one that will help you bend shadows to your will. You’ll just make a big shadow cattle catcher on the front of the car and plow through whatever the hell’s in your way. Except you can’t do something like that too quickly in a moving car.

“Xan, help me with an inscription!” you shout.

Xan joins you, her needle-like blood knife already in her claws. “What spell?” she asks.

“The shadow one. You know the one,” you say, rolling up a sleeve and giving her free range on your shoulder.

She nods sagely, and angles her knife in at you. “Hold very still.”

You’re not a big fan of people mucking aroudn with you, and you’re even less of a fan of people taking a knife to your skin, but the necessity of it keeps you focused. (+14 Stress: 39) Rowan fires a couple times at unseen complications while Xan’s helping you out.

“People, we’ve got problems,” says Vikrama,

One looks shows you what she’s talking about.

You’re coming back up on town, except now there’s about a hundred Mermenes in the street ahead of you, all premise of pretending to be human gone.
>>
>>41394368

Some hold lanterns, others flaming torches – some carry axes or guns, but most look like they’ve just woken up.

You think their plan was to stop you with the sheer weight of their numbers, but their ranks are thrown into panic by an unseen assailant – shadows twist and converge on the congregation here and there, cutting and biting at unprotected flesh, throwing them into chaos.

But even if they’re not rank and file in the way, there’s still a whole lot of bodies between you and safety.

You tug at Rowan’s jeans, minding your newly bloodied arm so you don’t ruin the car’s upholstery. “Let me up!”

Ro steps aside and you take her place at the head of everything. You’ve totally got this. Only one thing could make it better. “Give me some backup music!” you shout into the wind.

Rowan leans over below, hitting her iPod and cranking up the volume.

A horrifying twangy guitar and energetic drumbeat shakes the air.

A guy starts singing at volume, almost too quickly for comprehension. “We talk about your work how your boss is a jerk, we talk about your church and your head when it hurts-“

“Crap,” Ro swears. She fumbles for the player, but drops it accidentally. It disappears at once in the darkness.

The song continues. “We talk about the troubles you've been having with your brother, about your daddy and your mother and your crazy ex-lover...”

Not this. Anything but this.

>KILL IT!
>Screw it. No time.
>Vik! Gas! More gas!
>Focus all the shadow at the front in a wedge. That’s a lot of bodies to get through.
>Spare some for the sides, enough to stop any stray gunshots.

VoOTT doesn't directly target the shadows, it targets a spatial coordinate and makes shadows that enter that space go crazy. Using VoOTT on our car wedge thing does nothing but waste power. It'll be all cutty for about 2 seconds and then we'll drive out of the area of effect and the car will go back to normal shadow shield wedge thing.
>>
>>41394506
But it will at least look cool?
>>
>>41394381
Does using voice mean that we'll throw up a few of them into the crowd or does it mean that we're using it on our car?
>>
>>41394506

>>41394506

“Vik! Hit the gas!”

“I’m hitting the gas!” she shouts back.

You scoff. “Hit it harder!”

The car jerks underneath you, and you almost lose your balance. Almost.

You focus yourself. You have one shot to do this right, and you need to get it all the way right. You send out your will, putting your hooks into all the shadows on your right and left, dragging them with the car. You’re about to lose grip on them – not because you lack power, but because you can’t throw out your power fast enough – but that’s when you touch off the inscription on your arm.

A billion needles of pain flash over the entirety of your body, dancing in circles emanating from the fiery inscription on your shoulder. You expected this, but it still hurts like hell. (+5 Stress: 44) You feel the force of life draining from your body, converting directly to raw arcane power to dig in at the shadows at your flanks.

With a momentous heave of force, you draw the piles of displaced shadows before you, congealing them into one solid wedge before the car. Once you’re about to lose grip of the whole thing, you tap into the landmagic within you, burning up the power of one of your claimed landwells. The effect is like throwing gasoline into a fire.

The shadows in front of the car go from an opaque, swirling vortex, to solid, glassy plates of purest night. The distance between you and the mob shrinks.

“I can’t see anything!” Vik shouts.

“Just drive straight!” Ro screams back.

“Turn on the inside lights!” you bark.

Moriah complies, and a glow shines from within.

You let loose with a shrill whistle at the same time you collide with the first Mermene. The puffy-faced gilled man catches the edge of your shadow plow with a sickening crunch and bounces off to the side. The music continues blithely on, unabated – “I wanna talk about me, wanna talk about I, wanna talk about number one, oh my me my!”
>>
>>41395514

The rest of the fishmen forward in an attempt to bog you down – but you’re like a shadow magnet right now, and a pulsing wave of darkness flows in to form your wedge from all directions. It rushes past the mob like rushing water, flattening some to the earth, extinguishing torches, and catching others in the chest like a taut cable.

You keep whistling the minor chord as you go, the shadows recoiling and frothing at the painful note. The shadows converging on the car bristle, cutting into the hapless Mermenes like razor wire. You have no time to scent their blood as you drive by at speed, nor do you have the inclination to try – you must spare the full range of your concentration to keep up the plow.

Mermenes dive left and right, but some slower individuals resolutely stand their ground, only to be shunted aside at forty miles an hour. You drop the plow low enough to keep anything from getting under the wheels, but some still sneak under, and the SUV bucks beneath you like a wild horse.

You see a Mermene raise a hunting rifle up ahead, aiming squarely at you, but Monster descends upon him and suddenly bursts into ravaging flame – the figure vanishes in a conflagration of flame.

Others in your wake might have had the same idea, but they’re chewed to pieces by the teethed shadows in your wake.

And then, rapidly approaching, you see the road block. A couple ancient Ford pickups parked one after the other right across the middle of the road. You grit your teeth and hold the shadow plow firm.
>>
>>41395544

The edge catches the first one a little off center. The impact shakes you to the bone as you absorb the impact for the car. The next hits you like a brick wall, and you’re barely aware of what’s going on when the third slams you right in the chest, knocking the wind out of you.

Stars explode before your eyes, and your legs give out. You feel a vague sense of falling, which is kind of weird.

Someone calls your name, but the silence presses in and gives way to nothingness.
