Your peasants have reported sightings of a dragon in your forest You had hoped to solve this diplomatically with the dragons, but the dragon you spoke with seemed to be ignorant of the matter and then tried to woo you. You see only one course of action from here. You, your seven men-at-arms, and your two terrible squires are going to search the forest and personally drive out any rogue dragons. En route to your destination, yo have some time to try to set your terrible squires straight.

Why not both? Show how shit at following orders he is compared to the Kobold.

Yes, Mr. Dwarf you are actually worse than the Kobold! Do you want to have that written on your grave, "Higgenbotham, he was worse than a Kobold."

Each night when your men make camp, you devote most of your daily patience toward trying to set Higgenbotham straight. As bad as Gurf's problems are, you can at least trust him to at least do what you say and not murder people in cold blood against your direct orders. The same cannot be said of your scowling, husky dwarf boy.

As you sit at your ease and polish your armor because you can't trust Gurf to do it right, you see Higgenbotham trying to demand another sparring match with each of the men-at-arms he hasn't yet laid about the head with a club. When they all refuse him, he sneaks back to the supply bags and tries to steal the rest of the wine.

Your first instinct is to destroy him with your mailed fists, but you hold back. Surely he comes from some kind of important clan if your husband agreed to take him on. You need to send him home alive and with all of his teeth.

"Dwarf!" You say as you grab the back of his collar and pull him away from the pack with the wineskin. "Tell me where you come from."

Higgenbotham snorts and spits some phlegm at your feet. "I told you a thousand times, I'm from Clan Hardknuckle. I've been trained in the shortaxe and the hammer and the three secret-"

You cut him off. "And Clan Hardknuckle - what do they do with thieves? What would your father think if he saw you stealing from your mistress like a common outlaw?"

He narrows his eyes. "Funny you should mention my father..."

Higgenbotham narrows his eyes at you. "Funny you should mention my father. I don't think he'd give a gnat's fart which human's wine I drink. It's enough of a sin to him that I exist. I haven't seen him since he threw me out of the mountain. Your husband the Armless Wonder said I'd get a proper education with you, which I haven't. We've lived under the same roof for three years and you still don't know the first thing about me. You're worse than my old man, in a way. At least he didn't pretend to care. He didn't lie to me."

"You want an education now? Here it comes." You kick him to the ground, forcibly flip him over, and smack his rear end as hard as you can with a swordarm that has cut down archdemons. When he tries to get away, you put him in a headlock and strike him some more with the flat of your longsword. "You don't steal from me! You understand?"

He kicks and screams. "This is an outrage! You can't do this!"

"Who's going to stop me? You're not stealing from me any more. Say it."

That last comment about nobody caring to stop you seems to have hurt him more than the welts you're giving him. He lowers his gaze "Ghh... I won't steal from you any more..."

"And you won't disobey orders or you'll be hanged for a traitor. Say it."

"And I won't disobey orders or I'll be hhrmblbmmbl..."

"Good, glad we have an understanding." You release your hold on him and sheathe your weapon.

The next morning you put Higgenbotham on the front lines with the men. He still gives you and Gurf dirty looks now and then, but his open defiance has changed to more seething resentment and waiting for an opportunity to safely defy you. Perhaps he's on his way toward being less of a complete shit.
>Higgenbotham has reached level 2 and can now be used as a pack mule.

You reach the borders of your own lands again, where the simple peasants recognize your banners and the profile of you and Lucky coming up the road. The ones who know you pause a moment from their harvesting to kneel to you as you pass. The ones who truly know you, though, know that you prefer them to simply not and not interrupt their work.

You veer off the road into the woods near where the dragon was allegedly sighted. As the canopy overtakes the sun and you enter the cool shade, a sense of foreboding comes over the party. Gurf yelps and breaks into a run away from you when he hears what turns out to be a doe coming out of the underbrush.

"Gurf! Heel!" you shout, and Gurf comes crawling back with a whimper. "Milady, it had noisy feet. Gurf isn't good at fighting woods guys..."

Deeper into the forest, you notice a pile of bones. They appear to be human bones, picked clean and cracked open for the marrow. Shreds of cloth and scraps of leather can be found resting on top of the fallen leaves on the forest floor. This person died recently.

"Company halt!" You pull on your reins. Lucky rears up and nickers dramatically. You point out the bones with your sword.

Without even turning back to see what Gurf is doing, you add, "Gurf, heel!" You hear a yelp.

Higgenbotham nudges at half of a femur with the head of his axe. He's trying and failing to hide the fear in his eyes. "Well, aye, sure enough looks like a dragon. That lord mayor was wrong. We can bring these back as proof, get him to fix this for us..."

"We could, but we won't. We still don't know what it is. We search the area for more signs."

You make sore to do this right. You have your men-at-arms keep watch in a wide perimeter around the scene, each within call of at least two others. You keep the dwarf and kobold on either side of you and explain how to track large game. "Over here. There's bark stripped off this tree. Something was sharpening its claws on it. Maybe a bear, or maybe our monster."

Higgenbotham fidgets impatiently with his shortaxe. "All right, all right. You don't have to talk down to me like this all the time."

You raise an eyebrow at him. "Oh, of course! I'm sorry, Higgenbotham, I forget how skilled you are. By all means, take over for me. Tell me and Gurf how to find tracks under leaves or snow."

Higgenbotham starts talking before realizing that you've called his bluff. "I, uh... well, the main part of any dwarven weaponthane's training is underground. We don't really have leaves... or snow..."

"Right. Now, as I was saying..."

"Gurf knows!" says Gurf. "Game trails where nothing grows are good for brushing and looking for things. Gurf goes away from the big things, though. Only wants little things that go in Gurf's mouth."

>You now have 2 patience and 4 endurance remaining.

You find that none of the canopy or underbrush has been burned away, nor have any of the remains been charred. Whatever this thing was, it was almost certainly not a dragon. Interesting. You find a large set of tracks leading northwest, toward a rocky hill. The trees are further apart here, and there are some caves that would make an obvious hiding place for a horrible monster.

You find a relatively concealable position where bushes have taken advantage of one of the large breaks in the canopy. The men-at-arms all keep silent, and you alternate your attention between the cave entrance ahead of you. Gurf occasionally asks if he can go home, and you occasionally refuse and give him a light slap.

>You now have 1 patience remaining.

It is dusk when you see an orange light coming from the cave entrance. Some kind of corrupted beast shuffles out. It is a giant bear, taller at the shoulder than even Lucky, and its face and chest are deformed and marked with glowing red and orange goetic seals. Some demon has possessed this bear. It is not clear whether it has noticed you.

"Charge!" You draw steel and rush toward the foul beast. Your men do the same. Both of your squires are trying to run a little slower than the men-at-arms. Higgenbotham is trying to be a little more subtle about it than Gurf, who goes even more slowly than his short legs usually carry him.

A couple of javelins catch the beast's hide, and it lets out a roar that fills the air with the smell of sulfur. It's a smell you know well.

The bear lopes toward you and your men. As soon as it closes distance, it breaks the shield arm of a man-at arms and tears a steaming mouthful of flesh from his neck. You try to get its attention so it doesn't butcher anyone else, but it quickly catches on to your technique of harrying it with light thrusts before darting out of its reach. Gurf throws some small rocks at it, and Higgenbotham circles all the way behind it before chopping at its hind legs with his axe. He lands a few telling blows that make the bear wheel around and bowl over several men-at arms before charging the dwarf. The dwarf turns tail and runs, but you finish the job before the bear can get him. You climb its shaggy body and bury your sword to the hilt between its ribs, piercing its foul heart and causing it to vomit forth buckets of bright orange offal. When the battle is over, four of your men-at-arms are dead. Higgenbotham is catching his breath with a pleased look on his face, and Gurf is cowering and weeping to himself.

You wipe the tainted blood off your sword before putting it away. "Well, that's the end of that. Men-at-arms, you did your lord and lady proud. The fallen will be remembered and you three will be rewarded."

Higgenbotham looks indignant. "What about me?"

You barely look back at him. "Nothing. You held back. Gurf, you too. You think I don't notice? You treated your own lives as more important than those of the men fighting beside you, when in fact the reverse is true. You're only squires, and not even good squires. If either of you expect to ever be anything-"

"Gurf just wants to-"

"What Gurf wants doesn't matter, Gurf. You're going to be a knight if it kills you. You both have to shape up. Understand?"

"Yes, milady..." Gurf says as he drags his stone axe through the spilled blood as though to make up for the fact that he didn't dirty it in the battle.

To your surprise, Higgenbotham replies as well, "Yes, my lady..." His tone is still surly, but at least he's saying the right words for a change.

You do recognize the seal on the bear you were fighting. It's the seal of Andras, one of the demon lords who was sealed away at the end of the war. One of his minions must have hidden under the earth in dragon territory while his master was sealed away, then slipped out and started looking for evil deeds to do. At least you hope that's the explanation.

"We're taking these bodies back home to be entombed. Gurf, Higgenbotham, you two. You're each responsible for carrying a body."

You light a torch to oversee the packing. Just as you expected, Gurf can't carry a body all by himself, but Higgenbotham carries two corpses at once to pick up the slack. Dwarves are truly impressive in the amount of shit they can carry around. You check the cave to make sure no more unpleasant surprises come out of it. Fortunately, it is all quiet. It is relatively shallow and filled with nothing but cracked bones and incoherent ravings crudely scratched on the stone walls.

You take a different path on your way home, one that will lead you on a more direct course home than the one you came from. You find a few more sets of gnawed bones and clothes, a half-eaten horse, an overturned cart. You have the cart lifted onto its side to check for clues to its former owner's identity, or maybe even survivors. You find something that's almost a survivor. A human boy with a foul odor crawls out from where he had been trapped. When he rights himself and starts shambling around, it's clear that the boy is dead. He does not seem hostile, but suffering the undead to wander freely is not the done thing in this kingdom.

You have enough foul-smelling living children crowding your halls without adding a dead one on top of that. You call Gurf and Higgenbotham to heel.

"You see this? This is an undead child, little ones. Do you think you can kill it, or do you need mommy to help you?"

Higgenbotham nods and scowls harder. "I can kill it..."

Gurf looks over his shoulder. "It's looking at Gurf. Why is it looking at Gurf? Gurf doesn't like it - Er, Gurf means, yes, milady..."

They approach the shambling thing, and Gurf actually strokes the first blow, chopping the wight's leg nearly off at the knee and bringing it down before Higgenbotham chops its skull open repeatedly. It's a start.

You march through the night to get out of the woods, and by morning you have arrived safely home. The dead are consecrated by the wizened old chaplain and laid to rest in the catacombs beneath the keep. You're exhausted and nearly out of patience

This training is useless unless you actually have a genuine want to be a Knight. To WANT to train and fight and feel the burn in your limbs as you strike down those who would go against your oaths.
Go to sleep and find that Want. Tomorrow you'll spar against me and if you don't show your want I'll kick you out, damn the consequences.

>Have a bath instead. Get your husband to join you. Tell the servants that if anyone interrupts for anything less than a Demon attack or the King himself you'll have their genitals in your fist so fast they'll doubt they ever had them in the first place.

Goddamn Hue....I didn't know you could actually be useful? This is just... WOW Second and deleting old vote
>>
>>41381677
There are many Hue's. Some are good, some are bad.
All are cancer.
Some are malignant, some are metastatic.
Some inflame lymph vessels and cause a greater volume of lymphocytes, enough to overwhelm HIV, whilst simultaneously pushing on the surrounding tissues.
Some thicken the myocardium, preventing the heart from weakening due to infraction and muscle death, whilst simultaneously making it harder to pump blood.
We are all cancer. We are all Hue.
I am Hue. I am cancer.

I am also sleep-deprived twice and in <6 hours will be taking a test. I am Hue.

You've had enough with these two squires. You mumble something to them and retire to your chambers. You shout for some halfling ladies-in-waiting to draw you a bath.

Your husband is in bed reading a book while the bath is prepared on the other end of the chamber. One of the elven squires is holding the book and turning the pages for him.

He beams when he sees you. "You're back! Boy, get out of here. Hey, save my place, though!"

"Yes, my lord..." He shuffles out, and the ladies-in-waiting follow him after they've finished filling the tub with hot water.

You embrace your husband and kiss him deeply. "It's all taken care of. It wasn't a dragon. It was a bear with a demon in it."

He almost loses his balance. "A demon?!"

"Yes, it seems there are a few left. A few came up from the ground near Goldenmaw."

"Fuck. And we have enough problems as it is." He lowers his head.

You gently lift his chin with your finger. "What problems are these?"

"Well, remember that goblin page boy? Well, I had him thrown out, and then I remembered why we had him in the first place. We're in hot water with his mother. Speaking of hot water, let's get naked."

>"I don't blame you. I just had to deal with the worst squires I've ever known. More than once I wanted to send them home, or worse."
>"We both need to be a little more considerate of all these pages and squires. Can you do that, dear?"
>God, yes. No more talk.

"God, yes. No more talk." You help him disrobe, and out of some twisted sense of honor he tries to help you disrobe with his feet. You are careful not to laugh. He needs this.

The halflings did not have the forethought to leave enough space in the tub for two people, so water comes spilling out of the lip of the tub when you slip in next to your husband and start washing the sweat and grime off of yourself.

He leans against you. "I missed you."

"I missed you, too!"

"I miss Lief, too."

"I know, love. So do I."

"Here with nothing but other people's brats, I feel like I'm just going to seed. I should be teaching my own son. Teaching him what matters. What other use do I even have anymore?"

>"What if I want another child?"
>"Believe it or not, you're actually a decent ruler."
>Make an arm pun at his expense

>So selfish. Thinking that just because you are useless to yourself that you are useless to everybody else.
Do you think I find my loving husband, the man I fought and loved and lived with useless now? After all we have been through?

Either we get heart-warming reaffirmation or heart-rending truth.

You reach below the water level to stroke his thigh. "Believe it or not, you're actually a decent ruler. Rebuilding after the war, keeping justice, making friends, keeping them - it's harder than you give yourself credit for. And you do that all while I'm doing pretty minor errands in the woods like a hedge knight."

"I guess. There's at least one friend I failed to keep, though. The goblins are mad. Barking mad."

"One out of seven isn't bad. And there's one more thing you're indispensible for..."

"Aye?"

You smirk. "What if I want another child?"

He looks surprised. "Do you?"

> "Yes, I do! Killing things isn't the only thing I enjoy, you know."
> "Yes, I do. Every noble needs an heir and a spare."
> "Maybe one day."

Specially to bully squires in the future

> "Yes, I do! Killing things isn't the only thing I enjoy, you know. I mean, it's pretty high up there next to sex, but it's not alone."
And besides, if you have a child to teach you might stop getting so mopey.

You nod as your hand wanders under the water. Well, it doesn't exactly wander. It knows exactly where it's going. "Yes, I do! Killing things isn't the only thing I enjoy, you know. It's only one of the main things."

He clearly enjoys this development. He's gone for days without the kind of attention that most men can give themselves. This is not one of the things he can do with his feet. He's told you so. "You remember when you were, like, eight months along with Lief and I asked you to pull the trapdoor at a hanging? You looked confused as to why I asked. It was because I thought you'd like it. I thought you were upset that you'd gone so long without ending a life. You were all cooped up, like me, and it broke my heart. But you seemed not to miss it."

You laugh. "I missed it a little. But it was worth it. And it'll be worth it again..."

>I'm not going to go into too much detail with the lewds. But rest assured that much lewdness happens here, and some of you perverts can write it if you want.

>I'm going to break here. Thanks for playing! The thread's archived on suptg. Vote for it, and I'll see you next time.

Seeya. Hope we can punt elves and ponies later.

Thanks for running seeya next time
Also there better have been buttstuff
>>

Unfortunately writing smut involving handicapped people hits a little to close to me and brings back... "Memories".
Maybe another Hue can do it.

Thanks for running buddy, but I still have a single concern.
Is this going to end up like ScorpionGirl Quest were it just seemed to rush to wrap up an entire storyline in a few threads?
>>
>>41382601
Right now my plan is to keep it kind of episodic with missions lasting a few threads each, rather than one big long thing. I know life will happen, and I don't want to keep people hanging again.
>>
>>41382629
Nice. But do you have a sort of end-goal in mind for when you want to end the Quest, or is that far, far off in to the future?
>>
>>41382646
I hope it's far far off into the future
>>
>>41382669
To would you say its to infinity and beyond?
>>
>>41382703
Nah just hope it runs for a long long time
>>
>>41382646
Geez, I dunno. I guess a natural end point would be determining whether Lief is going to be a good knight or whatever. That might require some time skips.
>>
>>41382530
thx 4 runin budi gud thred
>>
>>41382780
Is Lief as mentally impaired as the rest of the squires?
>>
>>41383081
Lief is only a page, so he's younger and possibly less useful than a squire. You like to think that you at least gave him the advantage of a decent upbringing, though.
>>
>>41382780
There plenty of opportunities for time-skips with what was discussed during bath time.
>>
>>41383121
So since he was younger during the year of hate, he's probably not such a useless shit, or won't be when he gets to their age?
>>
>>41383215
It seems likely. You certainly hope so.
