Welcome to VR-BBEG Quest, the quest with a large number of capital letters! Last thread, John Smith, attempted dark lord, forcibly recruited a new lackey and revelled in glorious food. This thread, we start with a timeskip and possibly, probably attempt to hunt a dragon, maybe. Or not.

It turns out that spending most of your latest shift in-game hunting down plain-dwelling monsters, stabbing, sneaking, and teleporting whenever your MP gets high enough to do, ends up gaining you a decent boost in skill.

It also makes you incredibly bored. Even Russell ends up wandering off for an hour to 'just check some files' and comes back cheering over having got a rare card from some pack of them he just bought, which shows you how invested he currently is. Which is not much.

“Maybe that's enough of that 'grinding' crap for now,” you mutter, sheathing your rapier and glancing around the plains, absent of any person but yourself. You also choose not to notice Russell's quiet cheer. “Guess I've got that dragon to be finding, that'll be plenty more fun. What else...?”

While you consider, Russell now seems only too happy to impose, enthusiasm bubbling up. 'There's that apprentice of yours, some quests around the castle... I mean, it's a starter town, there's not much for a high-level person to do at the moment. Uh, no more forests to burn down, though. Please.'

He never said anything about not burning down the town, you notice...

Well, you promised to train that kid, right? And if there's one thing you're not, it's a liar. Apart from taking a job where you have to lie to everyone, of course, but that's just business.

“Valiant first,” you tell Russell, mounting your ignoble steed and starting back for the castle. “Might as well get her up to snuff before dragging her anywhere too dangerous.”

The ride back is pleasant, with only one attack by a random monster (some kind of scaled bird) that's quickly dealt with. The unfortunate thing about being in a starting town is that while it's easy to level up lower skills, the usual weakness of the monsters rapidly makes it worthless for improving higher ones.

Soon enough though, you're passing through the gates of Vienta's castle, dismounting in the courtyard and passing word for Private Valiant to join you as soon as possible. Until then, you

Making your way to the training grounds, not too far a distance, you wave off the salutes of the various guards. It's a warm day, however the programming regulates it; the grounds are dry and well-lit, bordered by several buildings containing practice weaponry, though only a few people are currently taking advantage of it – a couple of recruits over at the area reserved for archery, another man unimpressively hacking away at a training dummy.

You stand there for a moment, taking the scene in; there's room on the archery range, space to duel, or maybe practice magic. Valiant would, most likely, prefer to practice with her longsword, but her training comes down to you, now.

Counting down the minutes to her arrival, you consider the options, and decide to train her in

Swordsmanship. It's a useful skill, and hopefully you can train her up in it to a point where she might – you can only hope – be useful. And if you have to beat some sense into her while this happens; well, that's just life.

You hear her arrive a few seconds later, already gasping for breath, and turn slightly to see her; she obviously ran all the way here, not even moderating her speed. She'll learn.

Drawing your rapier in one whip-fast motion, you point it towards the empty grounds. “Move there, draw your sword. We'll start at once.”

“My lord-!”

“No time for that.” You amble over to the place yourself, giving her a little time to recover. “You have a long way to go, and we have only a short time to train you up. Let's begin.”

>Valiant skill Longsword lv. 8 to 10!
>Gained skill Teaching lv. 2! You suck at teaching!

After nearly half an hour of slamming your barely restrained rapier skill into Valiant's face (and other body parts), she doesn't have much to show for it besides a faint improvement in handling her longsword, and being even more exhausted than normal.

“Sword steady,” you casually order her, while sweat drips from her shaking limbs. “You're not going to hit anyone like th-”

“I say! Are you two having a little duel, over there?”

Christ on a stick, that's the plummiest voice you've heard since they tried to reboot Downton Abbey. You pause for a moment (Valiant trying her hardest not to collapse in obvious relief), and glance over to the owner of said voice, mincing towards the grounds with a small entourage of men and women dressed as gaudily as the man himself.

He beams at you with utmost vapidity, clapping his whte-gloved hands together, as one of the woman trying to cling to his side airs herself with a fan. “Don't go easy on him, guard!” He chortles, obviously making the finest joke of his life. The sycophants around him giggle or guffaw as appropriate, making him puff in pride.

'Your 'nephew',' Russell explains, before you can do anything violent and role-breaking. 'The King's only son, and heir to the throne. Oh- and he's kind of a fop,' he adds unnecessarily.

You smile, perhaps a little grimly, and give a brief, barely there bow. “Only training for now. In fact, why don't you come here, your highness? It's a good time for a lesson, and I'm sure you can show everyone a thing or two.”

The rapid paling of his face is a wonderful balm. “Oh, I – I shouldn't think so! Why, my clothes are hardly suitable for such play, see?” He pinches a fold of silken shirt between his fingers; you're surprised it doesn't tear.

“Highness, DO have a go,” a younger man simpers, hand on heart, looking suspiciously wide-eyed. “It's not like you're going to get hit, are you? And we'd SO love to see your highness' skill with a blade.”

Apart from a slightly panicked expression on one of the women's faces, the fawning crowd seem to love the idea, taking up the cry, while the prince himself smiles queasily, eyes darting about the training ground. “Well, I – I suppose – that if one is called upon to perform such a task, one should – should do one's best, yes?”

You smile again, and for some reason, this makes your 'nephew' swallow hard. “Valiant, take a break.”

As the prince skitters into place, almost cringing as he takes a practice rapier one of the guards offers him, you resolve to

“I do believe that's a win for me, highness.”

'That... was a little violent,' Russell hedges, sounding reluctant. And hell, maybe the kid's right. This idiot's old enough to know better, except – well, that's the way he's been programmed, isn't it? Not his own fault he's a foppish moron. You can give him half a chance, at least.

Dropping the sword aside, you extend your other hand, face carefully bored. “You could do with some more training, or it wouldn't have gone so hard on you. How about a few lessons, bring you up to speed?”

He stares at you, almost motionless, before one hand twitches away from his neck to warily take yours, the white glove too smooth under your touch. No wonder he couldn't get a proper grip with those things on.

Pulling him to his feet, you clap him on the back, before calling to a watching guard to grab the abandoned practice sword and stepping back, casting a quick look at your nephew's lackeys. They stand around awkwardly, some of them covering their mouths in apparent horror, one of the women fanning herself rapidly in distress. The man who first encouraged him to fight, you notice, is letting the faintest smirk slip free, while the prince stares at you like a scared rabbit.

It would be ridiculous to abandon your apprentice for the moment, but if your nephew leaves, he likely won't be back. “Valiant, get over here. You've had enough of a break.”

Startled, she pauses before grabbing her own sword and hauling herself up, moving towards you at a better-rested speed. “Sir?”

“I'll be teaching the pair of you,” you announce, your sharp tone removing any argument. “A great king needs to learn and remove his weaknesses, and I'll expect no less of my apprentice. “Both of you, stand ready – highness, stand like this, and take your gloves off, they're no help – good.”

A little slower and kinder than before, you begin.

>Valiant skill Longsword lv. 10 to 13!
>Prince Mirrim skill Rapier lv. 1 to 9!

Admittedly, it ends with of them exhausted this time, even more so than Valiant had first been – but that's fine. Valiant is somewhere approaching basic competence now, and your nephew is... not quite as bad. You've improved your own Rapier and Teaching skills a little as well, so that's a bonus.

Not long into it, the man was too involved in keeping himself as unhurt as possible to even care about his audience, who seemed torn between watching in silence or cheering him on, in case they got called out to fight themselves. By the time you let the pair collapse, panting, the group manage to give a quiet patter of applause for their prince, obviously uncertain as to whether one is meant to do so at the end of a lesson.

You suspect they don't see much training themselves.

A swift check of the time shows it's getting on for what's likely to be the evening meal; you

“Better than I expected, both of you.” The praise may be faint, but it's there, if they're not too stupid. “You've both got the basics down, at least, even if there's a long way to go to any real mastery. “Nephew,” whatever his name is, “I recommend you spend less time... socialising... and more time in the training grounds.” You fix him with a look that promises a thorough shredding if he speaks out, and by the way his jaw clicks shut and he nods frantically, the message was received.

“All right. The food should be ready for now.” You hand your practice blade to one of the guard, who seems in a good mood having watched the prince getting the wind repeatedly taken out of his sails. “You're free to go, unless someone wants to stick around and try it themselves...?”

… Your look around the assembled noble crowd seems to make them vanish awfully quickly. How strange.

Valiant glances between you and your nephew, reads the mood, and vanishes herself, bowing respectfully and fleeing to the safety of the women's barracks, while the prince holds himself awkwardly, putting his gloves on once more.

Battered, with rips and smudges on his silken clothing and hair windswept, he looks a little better than before – even though he'll likely need a healer to deal with all those mottled bruises he's coming out with. Huh.

“Uncle, I... Thank you for the lesson,” he says, the first part awkwardly, the second as if speaking by rote, and bows slightly but gracefully. “I have the shame of being – somewhat lacking in martial ability, I know.”

“Then get better.” Perhaps your response is a little blunt. “No-one gets good at anything without training,” you add, adjusting your own clothes – well-made, but practical, and not damaged in the least. “Will I be seeing you again for lessons?”

(1/2)
>>
He hesitates, as if making sure you're serious. “Not tomorrow, uncle, with the festival happening; but - after that, if I may.”

Fest-? Oh. Right, for that goddess you got the sacrifice for. Well, the prince seems appropriately chastised, even if he'll likely turn back into a brat with time. You give him a confirmation and parting bow, and walk away as he limps after you.

Look up former monster and dragon hunter's work in the liblary, WITHOUT anyone knowing about it. It would be really suspicious.
Sneak roll maybe?

We are going against a water dragon right? Let's see if we can get our hands on its elemental weakness.
>>

I'll give you a hint - it isn't fire.

Electricity dimwits. Which can be used with fire to make plasma.

Don't be ridiculous. The ultimate enemy of water is... paper towels.

Extra; try to move in and outside of the liblary without being seen. Perahps establish a permanent and hidden route or teleport point

Forget this. I'm too high to type anymore

Looks like strategy wins, and you'll look for other types of magic while you're in the library. Roll 2d100+6 luck bonus.
>>
Rolled 48, 67 + 6 = 121 (2d100 + 6)

>>41376093
Can still roll tho

Rolled 94, 10 + 6 = 110 (2d100 + 6)

Rolled 6, 72, 64, 26, 35, 99, 62, 17, 59, 77, 58, 37, 29, 54, 1, 50, 25, 19, 98, 85, 98 + 6 = 1077 (21d100 + 6)

>>41376093
If the world restarts, this knowledge will still be ours and viable right? No need to research again?
>>
Rolled 74, 20 + 6 = 100 (2d100 + 6)

Given that we are an ACTUAL PERSON, probably.
>>
>>41376140
Yep, this is a roll to determine what types of magic you find. Dragons are easy enough to read up on.

So that's a modified 100 and 73. Nice.

Thanks for playing, and I'll archive this thread before I forget.
