>looks like I fucked up my trip

You're now sitting in Mr. Devlinson's office, debriefing. Decon was exhausting and so was writing your report, but your day finally seems to be coming to an end.

"So, correct me if I'm wrong on any of the details here, but you arrived at the school to find that at least one of the brother's had been infected with some kind of... "rage fungus" and were asked to take him down, which you did. His eyeballs then exploded on another brother, who was promptly devoured by swarming cockroaches, which you believe played some role in spreading the fungus."

"Yes."

"After this you spoke to the head brother and arranged for him not to call the Scyths, opting to take on the source of the infestation yourself. You found it in an old shelter under the school, at which point you opted to take matters into your own hands and created your own personal inferno in the basement using supplies from school maintenance closets and the local hardware store, which blew the part of the roof off the building and released mustard gas into the surrounding residential area, killing..."

Mr. Devlinson pauses his replay of events to shuffle through some papers.

"No less than three local Cits. And causing grievous internal injury to ten more."

You quickly interject to point out that you did the best you could to mitigate the spread of the gas.

"Oh yes, I'm not actually terribly mad about that, we don't buy the sentences of ex-cons to exploit their ethics you know..."

He again falls silent, flipping through your report. Then he smiles.

"Overall, you did a good job. Great field improvisation, if I do say so myself. Just one last thing. Did you ever find the source of the fungal infection?"

"Good job, rookie. I'm a little pissed you didn't tell me, but grabbing that kid was a good move. We'll send him over to the eggheads in the labs right away, we'll send a team to pick up that glass bottle you mentioned and I'll get a freshly deconned van down there for you to get home."

It's tempting to wait but no one else is showing up yet. So I'm going to write based on what you're posting until more show up. If anyone else joins in the meantime, I'll try and incorporate their choices.

>Writing for go easy on the kid, is this normal, and do I get a bonus?
>>
>>41349004

"Well, go easy on Jeremy. He's just a kid and a scared, sick one at that. Plus... I may have given my word that he would be treated decently."

Devlinson laughs.

"Sure, we'll go "easy" on him but GEC is a company built on results, not empathy. The final call on what happens to him will be in the hands of our scientists, though I'm sure they'd love to get some of your input on him down in the labs."

Your stomach turns a bit but you maintain hope that maybe corporate scientists have a bit more regard for life than your boss.

"I guess that's reasonable," you say, and pause, thinking about everything thats happened to you during the day. Training never prepared you for bizarre fungal infections.

"Is this normal for a GEC job? I mean, is what happened to me today typical?"

Devlinson puts on what you think is supposed to be a sympathetic demeanor.

"A little shook up, eh? Look, GEC is in the business of extermination, and extermination isn't what it was in the pre-war era. The public doesn't know the half of it about the number of dormant bioweapons and mutated creatures that the great powers left behind. And a lot of the scientist's responsible are still running loose. It's our job to clean up the fallout and make a profit, so don't be surprised if you run into something even nastier in the future."

(1/2)
>>
>>41349163
You don't like the sound of that. You decide to at least try and capitalize on what appears to be a temporary moment of emotional weakness.

"Well, do I at least get a bonus for bringing the kid in? I mean, I'm sure he's worth something to the company."

"Oh yeah, of course." Devlinson's face returns to its usual demented grin, and the folds of fat on his neck push back onto themselves.

"GEC is willing to offer you a $25 bonus for bringing in a field specimen and to encourage you to do so in the future."

>Wait, did you say 25 dollars? Is that all? (roll 3d6-1 to try and negotiate for more. Beat a 16.)

"Yeah, just take this." He hands you an envelope. "This is your job for tomorrow, I figured you might appreciate the opportunity to look it over tonight. Oh, and-" he fishes around in his desk before pulling out a new set of keys and tossing them to you, "Here are the keys to your fresh van. Now scram."

You oblige him and leave, exiting into the Exterminator's Armory.

The locker room is just as it was last time, although this time there are actually some of your fellow exterminators around. Most of them are just in their standard "milkman" uniform like you, with their stubby caps and white uniforms. A few are trying on gasmasks and attempting to change awkwardly into their hazmat suits for the evening shift. They must be new.

There's no sign of the woman you met this morning, and you wonder if she got back from dealing with those "Shikoku wasps" in one piece. The only person of interest you spot is an older black man with a shaved head. He's sitting on the edge of of a changing bench, disassembling a long gun with a metal ring or sphere on the end and a cable that runs into a backpack unit of some sort and seems quite engaged by this activity.

You swagger over to the most green looking recruits and attempt to impress upon them your dominance, just like you learned in prison.

"Hey there newbies, just getting ready for your first assignment?"

One of them looks up from what he's doing to acknowledge you.

"Yeah, why?"

"Well, you might want to be careful out there. It's not all rats and termites you know. At least 6 cits have died on me, and that was just today."

"6 cits? What the hell happened?"

The other recruits are looking at you now, in varying states of dress.

"There was a mutant parasitic fungus on the loose, capable of taking human and roach hosts. I had to take down the hosts and then eliminated the source of the roach infestation without using my sprayer."

(1/2)
>>
>>41350523
"Without using your sprayer? Why?"

"There were millions of them, all swarming and exhibiting hive building behavior in an old bomb shelter under a school. Too may to wipe out with a simple prayer. So I rigged the place with butane, paint thinner, bleach, and ammonia before throwing a light in. Purged the whole place."

You wisely neglect to mention that you blew the roof off and released mustard gas into the surrounding neighborhood, but the green recruits seem quite impressed. Or terrified. Probably a mix between the two.

"Wow, that's insane. I hope my assignment isn't like that."

You grin what you hope is a cryptic and dashing grin, but it probably just comes off as creepy. The recruits start to chat amongst themselves and you make your way towards the elevator.
>>
>>41350604
Stepping out of the elevator you enter into a small white chamber with featureless walls. The doors close securely behind you and a voice booms "Organism DETECTED. Decontamination IN PROGRESS." The voice is feminine but it puts a disconcertingly artificial emphasis on the second half of its' sentences.

A fine mist fills the room. It smells of citrus and then clears away after a moment.

"Decontamination COMPLETE"

The walls in front of you open up and suddenly you are inside the lab.

(1/2)

>>41350696

(2/2)

The lab is full of what appear to be operating tables and, further back, you can see that there are several chambers beyond that appear to be filled with large tanks and holding chambers of some type. There are only two scientists here right now, a caucasian young man with a beard and a young asian woman with her hair in a ponytail. Both are standing over something on an operating table with clipboards in hand.

You wander around the lab, looking for someone who seems to be a little less preoccupied.

As you step past them, you see that the scientists are hovering over what appears to be a strapped down possum. It has been split down the middle, but instead of blood it seems to be leaking some sort of blue fluid. The other operating tables are all empty.

The door to the backroom has what appears to be a fingerprint scanner has been installed, but whatever security objective that was supposed to achieve has been nullified by someone who has wedged it open with a door stop.
>>
>>41351433

Back here there are cages and tanks filled animals of every sort, and the lights have been dimmed, presumably to simulate night.

It's an rather long room and all the specimens have been arranged into aisles according to type, as indicated by large signs posted at the head of each one. Additionally, there appear to be doors on your left and right leading into separate rooms, both secured by (closed) security doors with fingerprint scanners. They are labeled "Quarantine and Genetics Lab" and "Humanoid Containment" respectively.

You decide to focus on checking out this room until you can gain access to those.

You decide to walk down the insects aisle and look for clues related to your experience today. There seems to be every kind of bug imaginable here, including the mundane termites, fleas, bed bugs, and other pests you would expect GEC to have but also a great number of odd looking beetle species you've never seen before and even a few especially large tanks with butterfly and moth environments.

You're just getting caught up staring at the swarms of mosquitoes in one tank when you realize you should be looking for roaches specifically. The roach tank turns out to be at the far end of the aisle. It's a pretty large environment for them, about two by three feet, and you guesstimate there must be several hundred roaches in there crawling all over each other. Attached to the tank is a note:

>Took two controls to humanoid containment for experiment with specimen Jeremy Yu, Dr. Michowski

Sounds like they've already gotten Jeremy out of your van and down here somewhere.

You walk down to the end the insect aisle and turn down the reptile aisle. Like the insect aisle it appears to be full of specimen controls, mostly involving small lizards. You see a few freakish specimens that you've certainly never heard of though, including an 3 foot tall bipedal example with an even longer tail. It's legs are ostrich like and it seems to be ripping into some meat that was recently thrown into the tank.

A little further down, you find who's doing the feeding: a slim black female scientist with a soggy looking back of meat. Right now she's dropping some into what appears to be an enclosure which, aside from a single murky puddle of water, appears to be empty. She does not seem to notice your presence.

You walk up and attempt to introduce yourself.

"Excuse me-"

She doesn't react. Instead she drops an expecially large and fatty chunk of meat into the enclosure. About a dozen bug eyed lizards as long as your forearm lunge forward from the water and grab onto the meat, tearing it apart.

"..My name is Vincent Esperanza" you finish.

One of the lizards is pushing another off the meat with its' hindlegs, never bothering to loosen the grip of its jaw on whats left of the main chunk.

She turns around and finally acknowledges you.

"Clarissa Jones, part-time babysitter for these glorified piranhas and all the other control animals."

She seems impressed by your demeanor, which you're doing your best to keep unfazed by the carnage occurring in front of you.

"Those are definitely not piranhas."

She smiles.

"No, they're not. They're actually a new subspecies of croc that we found in the Yang-Tze. How they got there, we don't know, but they're vicious little buggers."

As if to prove her point, one of the little crocs snaps and bites down into the neck of one of its compatriots. Red-brown blood spurts from the wound, quickly spreading to cover the wriggling mass of feasting crocs.

"So what brings you down here? Technically I should be kicking you out right now, but the control lab is a relatively unclassified area."

"I was curious about a humanoid specimen your lab recently acquired via me... One Jeremy Yu, probably recognizable if you saw him, raggedy-ass clothes, creepy fungus eyes, and a certain affinity for the..."

You struggle to remember the scientific name for the roach family.

"-Blattera family of insects."

"Blatteria, you mean." She corrects you but seems impressed that you at least came close.

"I actually saw them bring him in just a little while ago. Dr. Michowski came by no less than 15 minutes ago to pick up some roaches to test his affinity for him. I'm not supposed to tell you this, but it's a pretty safe bet that they're going to test his interactions with the roaches before taking fungal samples and then eventually attempting to investigate the anatomical and physiological effects of the infection on his body."

The anatomical and physiological effects... you flash back to the possum on the operating table you saw when you arrived and your stomach rolls but you quickly suppress your nausea using techniques you were taught in GEC training classes.

"I see, well I'm glad to have found someone down here willing to share some knowledge with me. I don't suppose..."

She catches the look in your eyes and immediately sets you straight.

"Absolutely not. Not only does GEC forbid relationships in the workplace, you are, no offense, probably some kind of criminal they bought out of prison. I try to avoid dating felons."

Damn, she has some nice eyes when they get all angry like that.

"Ah, but is that really safe? Isn't everything classified around here?"

"Yeah, but the room you're in right now is 'classified' and you don't see me screaming about a security alert. The big wigs want to keep what they see as corporate secrets locked up safe and sound. Those of us on the ground care a lot less about 'asset security' than we do about the science though. It shouldn't be a problem to sneak you in."

You're tempted to add something of your own about "asset security" but you're in enough trouble as it is.
