Well, she’ll be hiding. You’ve got no real evidence that she’s even in the Zone anymore, but if she is, she’ll want to be somewhere far away from anyone with eyes. You know Gaby – she doesn’t exactly have the best self-image. Which is total madness, in your opinion, but whatever.

Gripping your coat tight against the cold, you resolve to check out a few other darker, more intact buildings you’ve come across in your excursions across the Exclusion Zone.

The clouds thicken overhead as you trudge along the blasted landscape, occasionally poking your head around a few of the blasted structured that litter the Zone. You gotta admit, you’re real lucky you guys had the station to hunker down in – some of these places are downright creepy. The more intact a place is, it seems, the more blast shadows there are, their limbs cluttering the walls and floors in frozen, flailing silence.

Passing beyond the old school building, away toward the center of the Zone, you eventually come to one of your prime picks – the desiccated ruin of an entire apartment block. The building itself is little more than a massive pile of rubble, but the basement-level parking lot below is almost untouched by the devastation the wracks the rest of the Zone.

As you draw closer to the entrance, you find yourself pausing slightly at the sound of voices – not one or two, but a hubbub of low murmurs. Looping one finger under your left glove, so as to withdraw it quickly if need be, you edge down beyond the broken ticket machine at the entrance.

The breadth of the parking lot is littered with tents, mattresses, and ratty sleeping bags. They group together in clusters, most of them arranged around a small fire. People – mutants – lounge around, most of them wrapped up against the cold, chattering amongst themselves and generally just keeping warm. There is a loud, irregular thump-thump-thump that turns out to be a bunch of kids kicking around a raggedy old soccer ball.

Wandering between the rows of tents, you dodge aside as one of the kids rushes past you, his friends trailing after him. One of them has an extra pair of bright, red eyes floating over his head in a slow, perpendicular orbit. There must be, what… forty, fifty people down here? Maybe more. You don’t know how many of them are regulars or visitors (you know the Corsairs get around – there’s like three of them lounging around in your hidey-hole right now), but judging by the sheer number of sleeping bags lying around, at least half must live here.

As you look around for someone that doesn’t look too busy or too burly to talk to, you notice that someone’s sprayed a weird symbol across the side of one the pillars that line the parking lot. It’s, like, two half-circles standing opposite one another, with a pair of straight lines running through them.

Weird. You think you’ve seen that thing elsewhere.

Putting it out of mind, you approach the closest group of tents, trying to look as unassuming as possible. Your first few attempts are mostly unsuccessful – you get a lot of people shaking their heads, shrugging their shoulders, and doing other stuff with assorted mysterious appendages that you assume to mean “nope, tough break, buddy.” Eventually, one of them – a girl around your age, with a slim, muscular build and teeth like knives – perks up at Gaby’s description.

The first Madelyn was a Clone of Jean Grey which Sinister Made to seduce Scott after Jean was thought to be dead.

He is dedicated to this ship, so dedicated he made backups.

Hell, in an alternate reality he explicitly combined Jean and Scott's genetic profiles when they never even met romantically due to Apocalypse fucking up the world.

You’re about to turn around and tell him to stop spouting dumb magic words when you feel Gaby’s muscles bunch in her arms, and her grip upon your hand tightens, the world suddenly transforming into a blur as she wheels you about. You hit the ground hard, a thin cloud of dust rising around you as you crash down amidst the debris, and the sound of Gaby shrieking is all but eclipsed by the very distinct sensation of something heavy flying over you, coming to land a few feet away.

Sputtering out a mouthful of dust, you look up.

Your party has been joined by some kind of hunched troglodyte. You can just about distinguish its build as female under the thick, unflattering raincoat it wears draped across its body, its arms terminating in long, raptor-like talons, forearms bedecked with a strange mixture of scales and… polyps? They look like polyps, or maybe tiny, spherical gems, each one sparking faintly with fitful little bursts of electricity. A long, thick tail extends from its rear, jagged protrusions flexing outward along its spine. The hood obscures its face, but you can just about make out a mop of dusty blonde hair.

Gaby is covering her mouth, staring down at you with a panicked, almost apologetic look etched across her face.

The woman in the raincoat grunts – it almost sounds like a sob, actually – and rushes at you, claws outstretched.

Thinking quickly, you roll aside, the woman’s claws flailing at the dirt beside you.

“Run!” You shout, slipping one of your gloves off. “Get help!”

What happens next, you’re not fully aware of. You think – you think – you hear the distinct whip-crack of Gaby vanishing into thin air. You think you remember getting your fingers around the woman’s forearms, scales flaying and peeling away into streamers of dust at your touch.

After that?

After that, you’re not exactly sure.

You recall feeling sick to your stomach as the world lurches away from your feet. You remember a horrible pressure against your stomach, and then – then a momentous crash, and half your vision turns bright red, the smell of blood filling your lungs. All the feeling goes out of your limbs and all you can do is hang slack as something slams you against the ground (walls? Ceiling? You can’t tell…) over and over.

Everything doesn’t go black, but you wish it would. Instead, you just feel yourself fill up with this heady, nauseous sensation of being trapped in an unresponsive body. You hear the man with the blue eyes speak, but it comes in waves, back and forth, there and gone again, and nothing makes sense. Sometimes he’s talking, sometimes he’s not, either way its gibberish.

After a while, you become faintly aware of being held aloft by that thick, reptilian tail, and of the man’s fingertips against the base of your skull. Where they touch you, you feel a strange, feverish warmth spreading through your brain, and his slightest movement causes every muscle in your body to seize up, like you’ve been struck with a cattle prod.

He presses harder with one finger, and you’re suddenly aware that you’re looking up at the sky above. He does it again, and the sky changes from red to orange, to green, to purple.

You feel your stomach churn.

“In-in-in-in-intressstaaang.” Says the blue-eyed man.

You respond by puking a little in your mouth.
