/tg/ - Traditional Games

You see of all the conventional animals that can be exist in a setting, I think rabbits are the worst. Their meat is not nutritious unless bred for it. They're fast. They're pests. They breed too fast. They have dumb ears. They have pointy teeth. They have bad eyesight. They're dumb as bricks.
Rabbits are bad and should not exist in fantasy.
>>
>>41342242
So what you're saying

Is that rabbits are fuzzy adorable goblins?
>>
On the other hand, rabbits have more or less single-handedly conquered Australia despite all that.
>>

>Their meat is not nutritious unless bred for it. They're fast. They're pests. They breed too fast. They have dumb ears. They have pointy teeth. They have bad eyesight. They're dumb as bricks.
Sounds pretty much like goblins, and we let THEM exist, so why not rabbits? Plus, bunnies are cuter, mostly.

Actually, it's more efficient (forage/meat wise) than beef.

They got kicked out of their warren (assumed) and they have a bunch of identical family members, so they have an excuse to murder stuff and get treasure. Any time one of them dies, another one of their brothers/sisters/children/other relatives shows up to claim their shit and keep going.
They don't even need to be of the same class or anything, just 'I know that guy who died, give me his shit and let's go'.

Rabbits are actually a Spanish animal. They were taken from Spain about 2,000 years ago by the Romans, but before then they were just a local curiosity and the civilized people who came to Spain thought they were hyraxes. It's theorized that "Hispania" comes from the Phoenician "Land of the Hyraxes" or something.

Rabbits really don't make that sound unless they are absolutely terrified. So terrified that there is a substantial chance that they will literally die of a heart attack.

I'm sure that those guys didn't realize that they were harming the baby bunny. Think of it from the rabbit's perspective and imagine that you were picked up by some giants who didn't speak English and their facial expressions are utterly inscrutable to you. Then they just started poking you in the face (rabbits hate being petted in the head except in a very specific way, and only when they're already relaxed) while holding you too tight for you to move.
Now imagine that instead of being a human, you were a species bred over millions of years to be scared and try to flee from everything.

Calling bullshit, sounds NOTHING like a person: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPrTTWMuKAI
>>
>>41351398
I personally didn't mean that it sounded like a human, just that it means the same thing as a human scream. Rabbits are far more intelligent than people realize and are more than capable of feeling fear and pain and they only scream when these feelings are too much.
>>
>>41342242
How can they have bad eyesight if they eat all those carrots?
>>
>>41351731
I'm not quite a vet or anything of that sort but their eyes are set apart.

You'll notice a lot of predatory species like falcons, I think? Their eyes are closer together because depth perception is important to them. I imagine if a peregrine fucks up his dive and doesn't aim for exactly where he needs to be, that's going to hurt.

Rabbits and prey species in general though, they don't care too much for the specifics. They're more concerned with simply having knowledge of whether or not something trying to eat them is close by, so their eyes are set to cover more area so they can see more.
>>
>Rabbit Folk are so ubiquitous across the continent as gypsies, wanderers and migrant poor that most people assume that they were always that way and can never recall a time when they weren't underfoot.

>These Rabbit Folk once possessed a large, peaceful agrarian civilization that was conquered and destroyed in the distant past, remembered only in their race's myths and legends.

>The wealthiest and most prosperous empire in the modern world was built upon the foundations of the Rabbit Folk's civilization, its lands still lush and idyllic from the care it's former masters showed it.

>No Rabbit Folk are permitted within its capital city, their capital city of old, because the emperor and his government considers them poor undesirable "vermin" not fit to walk the streets that, unbeknownst to him, they had built so long ago.
>>
>>41351714
>I personally didn't mean that it sounded like a human, just that it means the same thing as a human scream

When you say something "screams like a child", people usually assume you mean it SOUNDS LIKE A CHILD.

Yes, some animals scream in fear. They do it for the reason we're programmed to do it: startle whatever predator attacking us into leaving.

>rabbits hate being petted in the head except in a very specific way, and only when they're already relaxed
You mean like this?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWkmEhNYVF0

If rabbits really don't like being petted, I guess that means they're bad pets unless you know what you're doing (and most rabbit owners probably don't).
>>
>>41352063
This doesn't have any of your piss in it, does it?
>>
>>41352063
Even the current Emperor and his government don't know that their empire once belonged to the Rabbit Folk. Those that had destroyed their culture and evicted them from their lands were so successful that few know or believe that they were once great.

It's no conspiracy that the Emperor denies he Rabbit Folk into his capital. He just can't abide poor pests.
>>
>>41352189
Rabbits like being petted in a certain way... Rub underneath their jaws and cheeks (as you can see the guy in the video is doing) and they like having their ears stroked. Something that a lot of animals seem to enjoy is having their eyes rubbed, but obviously they need to be an animal that is very comfortable with you. They're really no harder to handle than a cat, it's just that people take cat-care for granted because they're common pets and people assume that cats are intelligent and rabbits aren't and therefore don't care how they're petted. I'd say my rabbit is way smarter than any cat I've owned. None of my cats have ever figured out how to open doors. Overall I think that the average rabbit is about as smart as the average cat.

My current setting sorta has this. There is a race of rabbits. They most of them are idiots, there are are billions of them per planet, and while individually cowardly en'masse they can be rather dangerous. Because they are rabbits there timidness converts more to xenophobia and xenophobia breeds a downright hate of other nations. Other nations return the favor and don't like them either.

The first game I ran in this setting I let the players pick a starting location. They agreed to start in the rabbit homeworld. None of them were rabbits. None of them spoke rabbit. yes it was a sci-fi furry setting Their attempt to play charades backfired horribly. Eventually they hijacked a ship and barely escaped. Now they all hate rabbits.

Funny, I once made a sci-fi rabbit-based race and they ended up a lot like that. They have the same sort of fear-induced xenophobia. They rose to domination on their homeworld by wiping out the young of their enemies, and that has been their combat doctrine ever since. They find out how their enemies reproduce and go all out in attempting to destroy their means to do so.

Myxy ran. the woods were dark and the brambles beneath the snow weighted boughts were closely packed...

"Run!" her parents had told her on the first night when they heard the baying of the hounds...she hadn't run fast enough, neither had her elder sister. they'd been caught and dragged along tied together, and told that if they ran they'd be killed and be used as feed for the hounds.

...she didn't see a branch in the dark. It whipped across her face, thorns biting into flesh, and her vision on that side was obscured in blood. the baying was farther behind now but not far enough...

on the fifth day they took away coinín, her screams could be heard for a time before they petered off into a faint whimpering wail. she was brought back bloody, she didn't say anything, she didn't move, but she started gnawing on the ropes.

...the stream caught her by surprise, she fell down the bank facefirst into the water, she got up and kept running....

on the ninth evening, right before they took her sister away coinín looked her in the eye; when the screaming started it wasn't just coinín, she thought she heard the screamed "RUN!" she chewed through the last few fibers of her bonds and took off, off the road and into the forrest through and under thorns and brambles.

...she was still running when the brambles thinned out, still running across the clearing when she heard the howl; she looked behind her and saw them a man on horseback lead by trio of beasts that weren't wolves only because wolves would never take to a collar. in her looking back she didn't see the hole she fell to her heel in. there was a snapping sound and she tumbled perhaps a half dozen feet before the world wen't black and she new no more.
>>
>>41357483
Myxy dreamed. she dreamed of swimming in the river near her home on a warm summer afternoon, the warm embrace of her mother after a nightmare, the comfort of the close, solid, feel of the walls of their burrow in the side of a high hill under the old oak.

she awoke in dimness and pain in her leg, she was under a thick blanket, in a warm room with a fire burned down to coals in a bazier, a candle flickered in a brass holder nearby. she almost didn't notice the man sitting on the other side of the bed calmly fletching arrows. he stood and stretched looking down at her. she realized he was a human, her father had always told her to stay away, that humans were all evil, and a trickle of new fear started dripping through her.

"what is your name child?" in a deep voice that sounded gruff more from dissuse than anything.

"M-My-Myxy." she stammered out softly, she reached up to something wrapped around her head.

"don't touch that child. not till it's time to change the dressing." he reached toward her to readjust the bandage, she tried to flinch away and the pain in her leg exploded. the man had stopped when she moved "leave the coverings alone and you might keep the eye, and don't move like that or your foot will heal badly." he shifted Myxy back into the center of the bed, gently adjusted the bandages, and propped her up into a sitting position.

"what happened" asked Myxy

"I found you in my woods being chased by wolves and someone I didn't like the look of." he started walking towards teh door at the end of the room

"wait!" she cried, she didn't want to be alone again even if he frightened her "please! where are you going!?" the man smiled a little.

"to get some food, I'll be back in a little while" true to his word he returned with a bowl of thick broth and vegetables. all they'd given her in the camp was bread-crusts and ditch water. "this is for you child." said the man quietly.
>>
>>41357506
"Th-thanks for saving me from those huma-, those bad men."

"it was a small thing, I dislike that sort anyway." the way he said is he almost sounded embarrased or ashamed. she emptied the bowl and he filled it up again with more vegetables and some meat. this surprised her "Are you sure you want to waste so much on something like me?" her mother had told her that Men had no souls and took what they wanted and shared nothing. everything started to blur at the thought of her mother

"it's hardly a waste child, you needn't worry over that" sometime through the bowl she started crying, and she nearly spilled all that was left when he put a hand on her shoulder. he didn't say anything, he just squeezed.

"I... I'm really grateful for what you did for me, but I should go now or as soon as possible. What would other humans think?" the man shook his head and spoke.

"I gave up on what other people thought a long time ago, you needn't worry about that, you can stay here you'll need a a little time to heal at the very least, and I'm not one for putting anybody out in the cold."

"W-what do you mean? I don't have to go?" he nodded and she started crying again, he held her while she did and she cried herself to sleep in his arms.

she spent the rest of the winter in the old stone cottage with the man, in the spring she found the camp of the bad men, each was dead, their wolves-hounds slain with mighty blows of what would have to have been a large hatchet or a small axe in the middle of all of it was a small stone carin. she wept for a time and returned to his home, and come the fall two figures left pulling sleds of tanned hides over the early snow to trade for a long quiet winter.

The next chapter ought to take place some time later, after the Man and Myxy have grown to be close friends. Maybe they take a trip into the nearby town together, Myxy's first time away from the safety of the stone cottage.

Did the town offer a bounty on each Rabbit Folk slain or was the hunt that Myxy escaped something that a King or Emperor instituted to people think of the Rabbit Folk?

Thanks for the bunny box.

A while back /tg/ had a thread about a community of people being turned into bunnies by either a disease or a spell, since the reason and setting flip-flopped for a while. Only part that really got hammered down was that they were cheery and happy and had a lot of difficulty being angry, and that it spread through hugs. When the idea took a modern turn, my personal favorite character came about, the police officer Nadene Bradley.

hows this?

she ran, spear in hand, bounding through the trees after her quarry. The stream came up quickly and she vaulted over it using the back end of her spear she was gaining on the boar. Jaqen always told her chasing down a boar wouldn't work out like she wanted but it never stopped her from trying whenever one bolted. This time was different though, this time she'd prepaired, this time...

the boar stopped and turned and in an instant charged directly at her, she had a grip on the spear and that was all that saved her. as it charged the great beast caught a wing of the spearhead shoving her straight back and off to one side. she rolled and hopped-up and was already raising the spear, but not fast enough...

the arrow sailed over her shoulder and into the eye of the pig it's still-charging body tripped, and started to tumble landing on the girl, she gasped and struggled to extricate herself from her porky imprisionment.

"you know Myxy, I keep telling you to stop chasing them so hard" he was an old-ish man tall, with a short salt and peppered beard, a old overlarge and well worn hatchet hung at his belt. three arrows cleched in is right hand and a longbow held more loosely in the other. "it'll be a learning experience for you to get yourself out of there. WITHOUT damaging the meat or the hide" he smiled, and turned to retreve the travois with the ranging's kills...

I'm doing that now.

>Daughter of the goddess of water and her mortal husband (formerly her most powerful and loyal servant), the lady of the moon is silent and untalking.
>She was able to communicate simply though sympathetic projection, though she preferred to be alone.
>As the first druid and originator of all lycanthropic power, her preferred shape is ironically a dire white hare.
>She takes a mortal host when the people of her realm (a breakaway tribe of rabbit-persons) is threatened.
>Though she is herself chaste, and her hosts similarly, her people tend to be more prone to promiscuity than most.
>When the world was threatened with destruction by the god of war slaying most of the other gods, she escaped at the request of the god of the sun, her brother-in-law.
>Guiding the survivors of the mortal realm towards defeating the god of war, she was one of the few original deities that remained of the catastrophe.
>Returning to her home, she taught the mortal druids to take the form of different beasts. Her humanoid form is an unusually large (Medium) rabbitfolk or halfling.
>Her followers generally ascribe the following animals to the races of mortals.
>The halflings are closest to her people, and courageous, most usually being represented as hares as well.
>Gnomes are often clever rodents, such as squirrels or similar quick animals.
>Dwarves are hardy animals, like badgers.
>Humans are often considered as wolves or dogs, depending on their temperament.
>Elves are mostly portrayed as foxes.
>Orcs are mostly viewed as either bears or boars.
>Dragonborn are portrayed as large lizards or actual, small dragons.

It's good. The religious and ancient Greek allusions are interesting. I would also recommend the movie. Whoever labeled it a "children's movie" must have not actually watched it.
The author was an officer in WW2 and the characters were inspired by 12 of his friends that he campaigned with in Palestine, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, India and Singapore.

That's not too surprising. People incorrectly assume cats are intelligent because they project on them. Dogs for instance, consistently test smarter than cats at some very basic logical puzzles.

she was still trying to lever the boar off herself when Jaqen dragged up the travois. "you still haven't figgured out that you have to carve your way out of there?" he started hanging up one of the boars elder children in a tree for bleeding and field dressing. Myxy sighed and pulled out her carving knife, by the time Jaqen was done wrapping up the meat they would save from his kill she was free, and holding a bloody and crudely carved ham. she knew better that to complain in cases like this, 'it's how you learn' would be his reply with no offer for help that wasn't really nesseccary. she wasn't dead or injured so it would be a learning experience

it's long, but almost done...

Peter had an amazing view from the treebranch. he'd been sitting there for the better part of the day napping and sketching the little town down the hill. he was startled awake by the crunching sounds below him of someone pulling a sled over last nights snow. looking down and across the small clearing he saw a pair of figures in green hooded cloaks pullin a huge load of wild animal furs. they stopped near the center of the clearing.

"alright, I'm going to go into town and see about setting up a meeting with the furriers appraiser; while I'm gone I want you to gaurd the haul" the taller figure said to the smaller. the smaller nodded and hefted a spear taller than he was and reached down to his belt to check something Peter couldn't see. the larger one knelt down and spoke quietly to the smaller. the figure nodded again and received an embrace from the taller man before he took his leave walking towards the town.

Peter watched the smaller figure stand near the sled, occasionally it would walk to a different side and look in a different direction. since he had nothing else he could do and his mother had always told him to stay away from humans he withdrew his sketchbook from it's case and started drawing what he thought of as "the fur-gaurdian" in his various positions around the sled. he didn't want to draw attention to himself for fear the human would "take an interest" as his father was fond of putting it.

I'm so confused, whats happening in this picture?
>>
>>41381029
"thas what happened to the Giorria family three years ago; my brother went by to visit hoping he could as about courting their eldest, Coinín, he found 2 mangled, skinned bodies and found tracks of horses and men and dogs." Peter's father always used the tale to warn Peter and his siblings to keep their distance from men unless it was absolutley essential, especially nobles, and especially when out alone. Because of that, and the nightmares those bedtime stories caused he didn't dare make a sound. it was getting late, and his parents weren't back; they'd gone to the town as a special trip to gather supplies for the Angoil families new house. his worry caused Peter to shif nervously looking towards the setting sun in the distance, and in doing so he dropped his sketchbook. it fell a good twenty feet to the ground with a small sound.

small though it was it caught the attention of the fur-gaurdian who took a grip on his spear and started walking towards Peters tree. when the gaurdian got close it bent down to pick up the sketchbook, Peter took this as the best opportunity to fall out of the tree and run, but his jacket caught and tore on a branch dropping him squarely on his butt at the gaurdians feet in a tatter of pale blue fabric and stuffing.

in one hand the gaurdian held the booklet and in the other the spear, a foot of steel resting on the space between Peters eyes. "who are you?" asked the gaurdian in a faint and feminine voice it seemed he'd guessed wrong on her gender at first, one of her eyes was covered along with the rest of her mouth to keep the heat in.

"my, my name is Peter, Peter Br'er" he tried to sound confident, but his voice came back in a squeak as he remembered his uncle coming back from the Giorria house. he tried standing but the spearpoint wouldn't move. he prayed she didn't notice the lumps under his cap or the shape of his legs in the tatters of his coat.
>>
>>41381080

she inhaled and started to speak again but a rustling in the bushes caught her attention, and she stopped. then she called out "whose out there?" Peter's parents stepped out slowly; his mother looked distressed and her knees hit the ground.

"please. I'm his mother, please don't hurt him, don't take my Peter away"

"I had no intention to" said the gaurdian, but peter's mother didn't seem to hear. and the pleading didn's seem to stop, even worse, her hat slipped off and her ears flopped down on either side of her face. the gaurdian froze and peter immediately decided he'd make a sacrifice

"Run!" he shouted, thinking he could get them to leave and escape, he grabbed the spearshaft only to have it wrenched from his hands and almost as if by reflex have the haft crack down on the top of his head. he'd have a bruised ear for sure, he was still on the ground and he could see the taller of the human returning through the brush behind his parents, silent as the death he most certainly represented.

"what," he asked in a deep gruff voice that made both of Peter's parent jump "is going on here?" the whole Br'er famil was shaking now. his mother tried to say something but only stammered incoherently. the man held up a hand and pointed at the Gaurdian "Myxy?" she shook her head, and blinked

"this boy was watching me, I didn't see him climb the tree, but he was watching" she held up peters sketch peter found his voice amidst the pained skull.

"I was asleep in the tree when you got here, mam," he said remembering his manners "my parents left me here while they went into the town." the man in the hood nodded looked behind him and whistled loud and shrill, the Br'er family flinched.

"alright, Myxy, escort them a safe distance away, and apologize" that last part sounded a threat and the Girl, Myxy, gulped "...for frightening them"

Koishi and Satori are both a type of youkai that can read thoughts and feelings. Kisha didn't like this, so she sealed her third eye, which made her a creature of the subconscious only, never noticed with a self effected by how others feel. Her third eye has been torn off completely in this oicture, so she won't be reopening it and rejoining her sister any time soon.
>>
>>41381042
The two girls are sisters, each with the ability to read minds due to their third eyes. Koishi (green haired one), having it found too painful to always see into people's minds and be hated for it, has closed/cut it, killing her ego in the process. Her sister Satori is crying since she can no longer "hear" her sister.
>>
>>41381111
Myxy walked with the family away from the clearing. when they were far enough away that the voice of the fur appraiser was a quiet mumble she looked at the family, "Missus, uhm, Br'er; I'm sorry for frightening you for the life of your son Peter, it was a mistake" the triteness of it galled Peter, a human, apologizing to the 'flop-eared' folk who buy law weren't even people...

"you listen to me" said peter with a well of faux-courage built on frustrration and bolstered in fear and not a small amount of pain "you have a lot more to apologize for than that human," he spat the term "all of you do for what was done to us, what IS done to us even now. who have you lost hmm? to unfair persecution? nobody I'll wager, your father looks the sort to just intimidate his way out of things" petertook a moment to inhale, expecting at any second to be dodging a swung spear like before "and I'll bet your mother blames bad harvests in the garden on us stealing food too"

what he was saying seemed to be working because the Girl was stepping back with every scentence, to compensate Peter was stepping foreward "my father and mother lost their friends, my uncle lost his chance for a life with a girl he'd only just mustered the courage to ask, I bet Coinín is in some cell kept for the use of the noble's men" he'd gotten very close by now he thought he saw a tear in her eye and had no intention of stopping "...and there's nothing the law will say about it because we're all just animals to you-" he was cut off when the girl pulled back her hood and lowered her face cover. ears flopping down past a lightly furry face
>>
>>41381144
"Coinín is dead, she died so I could escape, and Jaqen isn't evil like that" she turned in tears and fled throwing her hood and mask back up as she did. sprinting with speed Peter couldn't beleive back towards the clearing. peter just stood there dumbfounded for a while.

"my brother never found the bodies of the Giorria daughters..." his father said absentmindedly..."lets go, the Angoil family needs this hardware if they want their house to stand up to the winter."
-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_

Myxy sprinted all the way back to the clearing, Jaqen was waving to the retreating appraiser he turned in time to catch her as she hugged him and cried into his chest, she hadn't bawled like this in more than a year she'd come close, but she'd held it in. but all of the unfair wrongness of what the boy had said struck her hard she tried to tell Jaqen what'd happened but she couldn't between the sobbing she fell asleep listening to him humm a lullabye.

they awoke the next morning pulled the sled into town, did their trading and left for the cottage, she had been excited about seeing the village, she wasn't anymore. she only noticed the sketchbook when they got home with a sled-full of food and tools for the winter. sitting on the bottom of the pile
