Mars is terraformed. The hellish [Blight] spreads through the earth. War wages against the horror from the void, and you… you’re Victor Armitage, the star athlete of the [Silver Badgers], a Combat Armor Arena [CAA] team, and you have nothing to do with this threat from space. At least not anymore…

Hi TG. Today I bring to you a quest I have been working on for some time. It’s kind of a challenge I’ve set for myself, to be able to run a quest in a language which isn’t my main. I’ll try to make so you can really shape the direction of the quest. I’ll do my best so that this can be enjoyable for everyone. It’s my first time, wish me luck!

P.S.: Thanks for everything, TG. You guys are awesome. Just awesome.

Dice rolls are d100’s. Details on the system explained as we go.

Now, it’s time. Be it sports or the fight for survival, you will take hold of your own destiny!

Time: November, 03, 512 F.O.
Place: Mars, New River Valley

Bathroom. Mirror. You.
The water you just threw on your face is dripping off your chin. You are NOT nervous. You are not. Really. This is just the match of your life. Just that. You slap yourself across the face a couple of times and put on your game face, breath out the fiery air from your lungs and walk out of the bathroom with your head held high, and the confidence expected from your teammates.

After going through a corridor full of monitors displaying the next big event of the arena, you arrive at the assigned team room of the Silver Badgers. Your coach and your four brothers-in-arms are here, and they like what they see on your face, grinning as they stand to receive you. Mr. Marcus, the coach, Matt, the team captain and [Support Unit], Lizbeth the [Second Forward], Gregory, the [Defender], and Danna, the [Sniper].

You, the [First Forward], are the secret of this new winning formation.

LIZBETH: “Well that took you long enough, Mr. Star. Are you, by any chance, nervous?”
MATT: “Got me worried there for a minute. Can’t relax when the team’s ace is not around.”
DANNA: “We’re with you. We’ll be fine.”
GREGORY: “Weeeeell. Not that we REALLY need you. We can win this shit. We are the fucking Silver Badgers!”

The four are grinning like idiots, well, Danna is just smiling since she’s not big on showing emotions. They are your second family. This moment. The moment before you face another big challenge, trusting each other with everything you got. This makes you like brothers. This is precious, and one of the things you love about your new life as a pro athlete. If you knew you had the talent to pilot these suits of armor, you would have started much earlier.
>>

You are all wearing your sturdy carbon nano-tubes fabric called “Contact Vest”, like a diving suit, tight and light like a second skin. A must for using the Muscle Enhancement Suit, protecting the body from electrical discharges caused by malfunction and cuts from possible damages to the suit’s structure. Behind that thin layer of black fabric, your bodies are strong and trained, and a little overweight in Gregory’s case.

Full facemasks are hanging like a hood from your collars. Your armors are in the big lockers to the left of the room. Mr. Marcus directs his pad-device, a very high-resolution glass rectangle, to the main monitor, and it turns on showing details of the configuration the arena took for this event. He has his coach face on, which means things are serious, but now is not really the time for his directions. That happens during training. Now it’s the captain’s time to shine.

The map for the final is…

[1] Highland Challengers – A map that favors [Snipers]. High places with lots of cover. Jumping to navigate the terrain is essential.
[2] Wastelands 2 – A more complex variation of a map that favors [Forwards]. Open fields with many traps. Anything can happen. Caution is a good choice, but so is speed.
[3] Ruins and Fire – A difficult map all around. Favors experienced players and [Support Units]. Lots of traps. Those who don’t pay attention jeopardize the entire team.
[4] King of the Mountain 3 – The most complex version of a map where [Defenders] play a key role. An extra winning condition is controlling the banner in the center of the map, instead of simply eliminating the other team or scoring goals.

>[1] - Highland Challengers

MR. MARCUS: “Well, bad AND good news at the same time. The map is Highland Challengers. As always we are going with the wining formation. Two forwards, a sniper, a defender and the captain as a support unit/second sniper. We are facing the ‘Westside Tsunami’s’, and they are tough. Their declared formation is a simple ‘V forward’ with three [Forwards] and two [Snipers]. They have the advantage with one extra forward”
LIZBETH: “Pfft. The LAME formation.”
GREGORY: “I hate these kids that just absorb the most popular formation among the great teams and pretend they are professionals.”
MR. MARCUS: “You can hate them all you want. It works. This is OUR ticket to the 3rd division championship for the first time in five years, and they are not here by mistake. We need to hit them with everything we have. Matt, and Victor.” – He looks at you, expectant. – “Let’s get them.”

Oh, you’ll get them alright. It’s time to put the Silver Badgers where they belong. You’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time. Once you renegotiate your contract, find a big fat sponsor, and appear in one or two commercials, you’ll have enough money to take care of your sister, move her to the special treatment unit and finally be at ease. You’ve decided a long time ago. This time you are the one who’s going to save HER.

You and your teammates get shoulder to shoulder and show your credentials to the scan in the lockers. They unlock with a satisfying CLANG, and the sound of mineral plastic compounds smoothly sliding open, revealing your Combat Armors.

There they are. Your very own M.E.S’s, a.k.a Combat Armors. The five technological marvels reflect their owner, and yours is just like your. Your armor is…

[1] Somewhat Bulky – And makes your teammates wonder how the hell you can maneuver it the way you do. Are you some kind of ninja?
[2] Somewhat Fit – And you can still use it to tank damage, like the crazy bastard you are. “How the hell are you not dead yet?” is a common question asked during training.
[3] Balanced – To a point where it shouldn’t really excel at anything, but YOU make it excel at everything. You were born an all arounder.

PICK ONE

The fitting is fast. The frame adjusts to your body the way you like it, flexible compounds in contact with your carbon nano-tubes skin, nano-filament muscles connecting to yours with small electrodes and optical fiber probes. The core connects to the base of your spine, and you feel the electric discharge tensing your back. Yeah, it hurt the first hundred times. Finally, the frame is finished fitting around you and the armor starts closing.

The light and resistant plates project energy shields one millimeter away from your skin to protect your body from impact, heat and light. Small segments, responsive and angular, shinning in a silver glow cover the frame elegantly. It’s like this is your body. You feel like a machine. Powerful. It’s no surprise some people lose their minds while wearing one of these and go on a rampage. This sensation is amazing. You’ve done this a million times before, but it never gets old.

Once you’re all suited up, a circle is formed and Captain Matt Kroennig takes the lead. No one has their visors closed yet, and your expressions show that you are all ready for this.

MATT: “Okay. We’ve seen these guys before. Their snipers are going tobe a nightmare, but I can compensate as a second sniper for us. The problem is, they’ll probably swarm us in mid-field with those 3 forwards. Lizbeth, Victor. I hope you guys are in good day. This is going to be hell on Mars. Any suggestions?”

LIZBETH: “Full frontal assault…”

MATT: “Of course you’re gonna suggest that. Is there anything else in your book?”

LIZBETH: “… Except it’s a feint. Matt gets out, exposes the goal, and when they go for the honey pot using their lame V forward we encircle, distract, stall, and our ace steals the win eliminating the snipers.”

DANNA: “They have three forwards. We’ll need to be really fast or they’ll just reset the round.”

LIZBETH: “It’s okay, we got Lance. He can break through.”

There it is. The infamous nickname. When you pulled one of your crazy stunts during the early stages of the qualify round, an alias spread on the internet like fire. “Silver Lance”, the spear of the Badgers that pierces defenses and offenses alike. You don’t like that at all. Too much responsibility, too much is expected from you. But then again, your teammates know your limits, even though they push you beyond them every time. They won’t expect a miracle like the spectators. You can only do one of those per week.
>>
>>41336781

In the end, everyone is looking at you, Matt more attentively than the others are. This is the first time they actually turn to you in a matter like this. This means they really are putting their faith in you. Well, you ARE the ace that is going to bring the team back to the 3rd division, and that means you have to have a nose for victory. So your response is, of course:

[1] “Are you kidding? I make one mistake and we are out! It’s our ticket to heaven in the line here, we need to do this as a team, like always.”

[2] “I got this. You guys better cover my back because I don’t have a rear mirror.”

[3] “Come with me Liz. Maybe together our heads can amount to something similar to a brain.”

Field INFO incoming.

YELLOW: The Goal. Destroying it resets the match, and it starts over. Destroying it 3 times awards the victory.
RED: Your end-zone. Protected by automatic machine guns. Forwards get bonuses here. There are NEVER traps here.
BLUE: Your safe-zone. Defenders get bonuses here.
GREEN: Mid-field. No one gets bonuses. In maps with traps, this region has the highest concentration of them.

Highland Challengers. A map with stone towers full of small rooms and platforms that vary on height and size. Running on ground level is almost impossible, but not quite. The cramped positions favor mobility over speed. It is a multilayered labyrinth, where the most open space is in the highest level. Low concentration of traps. Many choke points. Favors [Snipers] and good [Defenders].

YOU: “It’s the captain’s call. We’ve come this far with you Matt. And we trust you.”

Your words float about for at least tem seconds before all your teammates smile to eachother and then look at you, like a proud father looking at their son. Then you realize it. These damn bastards were testing you.

YOU: “HEI! Do you really think that I’m so full of myself as to start barking orders around here? I’m hurt!”

LIZBETH: “Well, you ARE the mighty Silver Lance. We just thought you might be gunning for the captain position.

MATT: “Which I would give, if you can really make us climb to the top.”

YOU: “Your guys are the worst. Seriously…”

You all laugh.

MATT: “Well, looks to me like Lizbeth’s got a plan. I can live with that.” – He says, his tone light. It looks like he really liked what he heard from you. – “It’s time to kick some westside butt people.”
GREGORY: “That works. We can make anything work.”
DANNA: “Being too positive makes you look like an idiot Greg. Not that you need help.”
GREGORY: “Shut up princess.”

“One, two, three, Silver Badgers!” You all scream, pumping your fists in the air. After a quick review of the plan, you are all in the elevator to the main arena. Like gladiators, ready to enter the coliseum, you hear your opponents announced as the elevator comes to a stop, doors still closed. The closed environment muffles the cheer of fifty five thousand people covering more than half of the arena’s seats. You feel it. The thrill. The expectation.

GREGORY: “Seriously, if we win this shit, I’m buying the rounds tonight. Premium lager coming out of your ears at the usual place.”
DANNA: “Greg spending money? Thanks. Now the universe will end in a Blight Armageddon if we win.”
GREGORY: Ha-ha-ha, very funny. Don’t forget I’m the one who protects your skinny ass.
MATT: Considering we’ll probably get a nice new sponsor if we make it, he’s making a safe bet here
>>
>>41337234

You smile at the comments, then turn to Lizbeth. She is in a trance, like always. The girl is a hyperactive tomboy, but when she is inside that elevator, or on the arena, she becomes a sphinx. A robotic one. With boost jets. DOUBLE boost jets. Cold. Precise. Fast. Really fast. The strength of the Badgers is their excellent [Sniper], and the [Forward] combo. You and her. You can do this. Together you all can do this.

YOU: “I wish I could exude this aura of professionalism.

You say as you get a little closer to Lizbeth. She snaps out of her trance and looks at you a little startled, then smiles confidently.

LIZBETH: “Teach me how to single-handedly win us three matches then. Seriously, why would you need my concentration when you’re a one-man army?” – She laughs. – “But well, this one really is getting on my nerves more than the others. There’s a lot at stake. Everyone’s dreams.”

YOU: “With you on your best days, there’s no way for us to lose this.”

LIZBETH: “Your armor doesn’t have any upgrades from the fabrication standard and you’re STILL the ace of the team. You could probably pilot a garbage can with your foot tied to your head. I’m…” - She hesitates, then forces a smile. – “I’m just the second forward.”

You usually don’t compliment people without good reason, and Lizbeth knows that. She has been feeling a little down recently, and when you joined the team she was very much against your rookie ass. When you shut her up with hard work and good performance, thinks got a little awkward.

Well. You ain’t having this shit for breakfast. She’s a friend now.

YOU: “Well. I’ll just beat the shit out of you if you slow me down, then.”

>Write in's.

YOU: “So, captain, Greg and Danna are going to hold their forwards as long as possible so we can encircle and tackle, then breakaway to take on the snipers, right?”

MATT: “That’s the plan. We can’t let them bypass Greg, or they’ll destroy our goal and reset the match. It’s gonna be close, but hey, this is a final.

GREGORY: “I’m on it champs! Nobody passes THIS WALL” – He slams his hand on his gigantic chest. Seriously, this guy is 2m tall and very heavy. – “Besides, I had a dream…”

DANNA: “Oh, shut up Gregory.”

A final check on your equipment reminds you exactly what loadout you have at your disposal. It’s too bad you couldn’t custom it specifically for this map, but that’s okay. You can use any equipment in any situation, albeit not as well as you would like. What you brought with you for this match was, of course:

[1] – Boost Jets. For THAT extra speed. A forward is a forward after all.*
[2] – Extra protection plates. To break through formations you gotta take some heat.
[3] – Extra Pulse Shotgun. They sure aren’t expecting you to dual-wield on their faces.
[4] – Disruption Field Device. Those immobilization traps are not going to get you.
[5] – Energy Shield. If you need to improvise as a defender, or just tank damage, this will come in handy.
[6] – Cross-Fiber Net Shooter. Hit one of them with this, and they’ll be out of combat for at least 30 seconds. Hard to aim and only two shots per round, but you’ll make it work.*
[7] – Energy Baton. Strike the torso receive three-second stun. You DO like it up-close and personal.*
[8] – Pulse Rifle. If Lizbeth is in one of those glorious days, maybe you should be ready to cover HER, so that she can steal the win.

*you can pick this option two times. doing so makes the rolls involving it easier.

Fuck. The anticipation is killing you. It shouldn’t be, but this match is really important, isn’t it? The door opens. Light assaults your eyes and your visor adjusts the contrast. There you are, New River Central Stadium. The stage, your stage. Time to give a middle finger to fate.

The field is default size, 240x160m (262x174yd). And as soon as you take your first step on it the crowd goes wild. The underdogs are always the favorite, specially when they are on a victory streak. That’s twelve matches, 2 losses, 2 draws, 8 victories, 5 consecutive. Can’t get any better than that for a season finale. As the big main monitor shows the team and announces it’s players, you eye the opponents on the other side of the field.

The “Ready?” sign appears in your armors HUD. You can confirm it with one look. Before you do so, you think about a lot of things you shouldn’t be thinking right now. Your sister for one. She is watching you on television, probably with your father. They are both cheering for you. You have to win this thing, for both them and your teammates. Then another person’s face flashes by your mind. Your mother’s. Well, your mother…

[1] – … is probably watching, but that doesn’t change anything between you.
[2] – … is probably not watching. Duh. More news at eleven.

>[1] – … is probably watching, but that doesn’t change anything between you.

That’s right. Last time you had dinner together, ages ago, she mentioned she actually saw some of your matches since “the idiots from human resources don’t know how to lower the volume”. Very motherly. It doesn’t matter.

You finally confirm the invitation in your HUD. Being the last one to do so warrants a strange look from Matt, but it lasts only a second and his face turns back to it’s natural neutrality, with a small confident smile. He knows you well enough. You’re ready. You’re here, and nowhere else. You all take your positions near your goal, an orb fluctuating on top of the team’s symbol, a silver mechanical Honey Badger. Times up. A siren resounds. Fireworks blow from the corners of the stadium.

It’s the final. It’s on.

YOU’RE on.

First. Field control. Advance. Position yourself. See them coming. Predict their actions. Counter-attack. Your boots scrape against the irregular field and you propel yourself with your double boost jets for the nearest vantage point. A tower, one of the highest. Behind you, Gregory helps Danna get to the highest one in your safe-zone. From there, she’ll give hell to those three enemy forwards.

By the way. They are already on the move.

Matt goes to low ground. He’s a tactician, yes. Lizbeth has twin jets too, and crosses you in the air as you both land at the same time at your respective destinations, already preparing a second jump to the mid-field. Gregory moves with his double energy shield at a much slower pace to a choke point where he can both stall the forwards and protect Danna. The scream form the crowd are loud as they see both teams advancing and assuming positions. You prepare your pulse shotgun. The world becomes silent.

Three forwards appear in your visor, jumping with their boost jets.
>>
>>41338569

The plan is simple. Pretend to go for a shootout with the forwards at a disadvantage of three against five. (two forwards and a sniper agains three forwards and two snipers). Matt surprises them with low angle shots from his rifle, Lizbeth goes for the kill and you pass right in the middle of the confusion. To be convincing you’ll need to fight a little.

That’s the tricky part, Being convincing. You reach the mid-field and so do your opponents. It’s two on three. You and Liz are ready.

>How do you attack/move?
>>
>>41338670
>Save the boosters
>Tag the forwards from medium distance with the shotgun. Focus less on damage and more on distracting and marking them for Lizbeth to shoot down

Also, the plan includes having you nailing their snipers so you can win by EXTERMINATION, immediately ending the match.

>>

>>41338751

You’ve got to protect and conserve your boosters. There’ll be a lot of moving around when you go towards their snipers, who undoubtedly are hiding in their end-zone. What you’ll do is distract them for Liz with harassing fire while rising to higher grounds.

You can jump to higher ground just fine, but doing so at the speed your targets are moving messes with your aim BIG time. You shoot, but they are sprinting with everything they have.

Your harassing fire catches only one of them, who was lagging behind. The other two are going straight for Lizbeth, as two perfect shots from Danna and Matt hit the slacker right in the face.

God, but their sharpshooting is not what leaves your speechless.

Lizbeth is literally dacing a dacne of death in the middle of the cross-fire of those two forwards, barely making it through without getting hit. She’s literally pinning them down. ALONE.

Well, time to trust your teammates. They are clearly with their heads in the game.

Your HUD informs you’re being targeted. Hell, you can’t let those four carry you in this match. It’s time to step up.

If this is still your choice, we go with it. No problem. Also, nice roll.

But Lizbeth, seriously girl, what the fuck did you sacrifice to the dice gods?
>>
>>41339259
Oh, I thought it was either or, not just Extermination.

It's fine to go for kills, but at least call the snipers so they don't focus fire.

If we can't get a sniper on the first pass, go for the goal

Both snipers are aiming at you. Good. That’s what you want. With no cover fire those three forwards behind you will be mincemeat by the time the Badgers are through with them.

You sprint while forcing your body to the sides. Nano-filament muscles tensing. You push them to the limit, feeling them hooking at your actual muscles with strength that makes you want to scream, but you don’t have time for pain. Not now. Not with two of the best snipers of the competition aiming at you.

The first shot comes. It misses you by far.

The second one comes, and it would’ve been PAINFUL if you didn’t react at the last second, turning your boost jets at max power and launching yourself in a desperate air maneuver. Your trajectory slams you against an obstacle, metal scraping form your left bracer and shoulder as you correct yourself and fall on top of a platform, rolling to lessen the impact.

You go for one of the snipers. His missed shot gave away the tower he is in. Their rifles are still on cooldown. It’s going to be beautiful.

>How to tackle the snipers? One is still concealed.
>>
>>41339391

Dang. Late by a second. Good roll too.

Also, your idea is now the backup plan, but your team is rolling like it's a party, seriously.

Go in the building for cover as we go up to the revealed sniper. When we're close, use the shotgun to zone, not kill, and tackle-booster him out the building into a chokeslam on the ground

In and out of buildings and windows, since there're so many. Blast stuff before going through to mess their timing and aim.
>>

The chokeslam would destroy you both with a bad roll. But tackling him out of the building is a great idea.

Any other ideas just add it here. Writing now.

You go for one of the snipers through the buildings, which is a good call. The machine-guns from their end-zone defense system are not seeing you. As long as you keep out of the top of the towers, you’ll only have to worry about their shots. And not too much since they missed another couple as you entered their field. Now it’s a hunt.

You blast your way through on of the windows in a boost jet leap across the gap between you and the snipers room and crash-lands near him. With his rifle on cooldown, he picks up his pistol and fires at you, but not before you mess his aim with distracting shot to the structure as he rolls for cover.

You don’t want to just win this match. This is personal. Their lame “V forward” pisses you off, and you are going to show just how much right now.

Your Pulse Shotgun is not as effective as you would have liked, but that just made you more angry. After rolling away from a barrage of gun-fire, many shots actually landing in your armor and causing minor damage. You tense your Nano-filament muscles and let them explode like a spring as you activate your boost jets to the max.

He was trying to run away. Bad move.

You slam your shoulder against him, the bulk of your armor lessening the impact for your and adding to the blow. The impact is so perfect you almos take no damage, and the other guy is blasted through this windows and the other one on the other across… and the the one at the end of that other corridor.

Well. He’s probably fine.

One sniper down for good. One to go. This way you can win just by resetting the match and starting over with great advantage. Besides, you don’t know how are things on your side, or where is that other sniper. Better play safe. Too much is at stake.

Except you can’t find a way to the goal through the towers. You are going to have to expose yourself. When, you do, a barrage of machinegun fire is waiting for you, and your not in your best condition, really. Now the other sniper knows where you are, and you have to retreat a little. Everything is still under control. You’re in their end-zone, some cover between you and the way to the goal.

Luckily, thing seem to be going really well back home. Lizbeth sprints past you attracting some fire from the machine guns, and then ducking behind a small platform. She makes the sign for a double assault, just the way you like it.

Double Assault to the goal.

Your boost jets scream. You spring suddenly into an air maneuver in order to jump just through the space between to close platforms, into a direct line of fire from one of the machine guns. You’re not alone, and the weapons target Lizbeth, who’s much slower and gets almos ripped in half by heavy fire. You have a mission, and she’s fine, so you look straight ahead and…

Gets shot right in the face by their sniper.

The shot breacks your visor and clouds your HUD, but your not the ace of the Badgers because your cute. The shot disturbs your axis of rotation and you use that in conjunction with your jets to propel yourself in angle above the machine guns, with a clear line of fire to the goal.

Two shots. All dead-center.

Lights flash, and the machine guns cease-fire. The round ends.

On your side. 4 players are still on the game. On theirs, only one. There isn’t going to be a second round. As you return to your end-zone with Lizbeth, leaping happily over the towers, an announcement appears on the screen. That sniper is not going to take on the badgers alone.

THE WESTSIDE TSUNAMI’S FORFEIT
THE SILVER BADGERS ARE GROUP “H” CHAMPIONS

The match was quick compared to some others, but man did things heat up in the middle. And your little stunt with that sniper? Broadcasted by several cameras, the thing is probably going to show up in the internet as some kind of joke for kicking people out of chat rooms by tonight. You and your teammates do a circle and scream the name of the badgers as floating cameras register your celebration. This is the tenth match the spectators have seen today, but the Badgers are special. The city loves this team, and wants it back at the third division.

GREGORY: “It’s the third division bitches! We’re on the fucking main league!”
DANNA: “They are still far away. Our next target is the Base Conference Champions Trophy.”
LIZBETH: “Fuuuuck! I’m getting even more fired up!”
MATT: “You are awfully contemplative, as usual. Why does victory take so long so sink in for you?”

Now, that’s a good question. Just now you realize that you’re a little less joyful. Is it your sister? Maybe something else?

[1] – I don’t really know. That’s just how I am. Stare into nothingness now, celebrate later.
[2] – I’m not really used to winning, maybe that’s where the delay comes from.
[3] – These matches, these victories, were something I owed you guys. I couldn’t be a bad replacement for the previous Badger. This is just a job well done.
[4] - I'm just a little worried about my sister.

MATT: “Yeah, that WAS a lucky shot from that guy. Looks like we got them on a half-bad day.”
GREGORY: “Hey Captain! Don’t make it sound like we got lucky! Lizbeth surpassed the Silver Lance today. THAT’S why we won!”
YOU: “Can’t argue with that one. You did great Liz.”

She pouts. The things you said before the match start to make more sense to her. She was the talent before you came, and she still is. This time YOU punch her on the shoulder, and you two hug for comedic reasons as you all retreat to the elevators.

A quick team meeting follows as you celebrate with the coach. Now the Silver Badgers are going to the third division, and will take part on regional cups. Loads of money are coming your ways if you play your cards right. You can’t wait to check your phone for how many calls your manager has left you. Your best friend, Friedrich Ritz.

Think a mix between iron man and metal gear rising. The Nano-filament muscles are practically skin tight. The [frame] can be more or less bulky, but think War-Machine form iron-man as the maximum. Mobility is the priority.

Combat Armors off, contact vests off. You and your teammates are wearing your ATD-Pro clothes, your only sponsor. A small one, but that’s going to change soon. No one wants to talk to the press, but that’s mandatory, gotta show those brands on national television.

As you’re exiting the team’s room, reporters flood in your direction. This is not just a sport, this is THE sport. Everyone likes it, everyone watches it. Who doesn’t want to see ten armored athletes shooting and punching each other on crazy terrains with sparks flying, explosions, danger and competition at it’s maximum on a big screen? Worked for the romans, and they hated a lot of things. You and your companions just slide to the side as the captain stays back with the coach for some quick questions.

REPORTER: Matt Kroennig, after five years, now you’re captain, now the Badgers are going to back to the third division championship, leaving the base divisions behind with an amazing six win streak. How does it feel?

MATT: We are back where we belong. It feels like home.

REPORTER: What’s the secret for this amazing combination you have going on her? They have skills, they have confidence, they have intelligence. Do they have everything?

MATT: We still got a lot to learn, but, of course, we got some talented people here, we’re all working hard and our next objective is having a go at the Base Conference Trophy.

REPORTER: Where did you find those two Forward Badgers, that’s what we really want to know. Lizbeth Harcker has been around for three years, we know she is a promising kid, but the Silver Lance has got to be blowing your minds away just as he is blowing ours.

MATT: Yeah. Victor is great. He’s a team player, he takes point, he accepts responsibility. We have a good thing going on here, with this team, with our two great forwards we can be more competitive and rise up to the next challenges.

One of the reporters finds it’s way to your side and suddenly there are lights on your face, and two big cameras. Why do they have to be so big? We can travel through space but can’t make compact filming devices?

YOU: “I don’t know about that, I may have just lost my lead this match. There’s good competitor out there too. We’ll see at the end of the season.”

Those standard responses make you chuckle. They almost make a man as smart as Matt sound like an idiot, but from the sponsor and the coach’s perspective, it was a perfect interview. That’s how it goes to attract sponsors and getting fans. You have to learn to never say too much and always focus on the team effort in order to avoid concentrating attentions on a single player, or sounding cocky. Well, some people can make that work, but not you.

The interviewing is cut short by the coach not long after that. It’s time to let the Badgers rest, except you won’t. There’s going to be a lot of drinking, a lot of shouting, a lot of wrestling, a lot of princess carrying (because Danna HATES those), and, of course, your little “me” time. Go home, soak in the bathtub, get you head back on the real world, out of that suit of armor.

After exchanging some final words with your people, leaving behind a promise to meet with them at the usual place, you check the time. Four in the afternoon. The restricted parking lot holds your chopper. Where to go first?

Friedrich is at that one sports bar, The Monolith. During college years at New River Technological Institute, you two would drown yourselves in beer with a couple of falsified ID’s. You where seventeen, too young to drink. You would complain about your mother, he would complain about his brother, and both of you hit on every girl in the joint. You’re still famous, but now much more than back then.

Your bike turns ON with the press a button, then floats of effortlessly, drifting one meter above the surface, out of the parking lot and into the main avenue behind the stadium. People are still leaving from todays matches and the skies are beginning to darken. It’ always difficult to know how late it is in this planet. The calendar doesn’t match it’s rotation after all. Thinking about the calendar leads to thinking about earth, and the Blight, and your sister.

Yep. Drinking. First with Fred. Then with your teammates.

He became your manager as sort a joke, but neither of you knew you actually had talent for this sport. Shit happens, and he decided to go all the way to the end with this. You can trust him. You saved his life, he saved yours. A couple of years ago thing where much more difficult. It still amazes you that you two survived that caos.

No. You survived because of her. Your sister. She saved you.
>>
>>41341394

Thirty minutes is what it takes you to reach Uptown Avenue. You park behind the pub, the owner already knows you and your discretion. The place hasn’t opened yet, but Friedrich is there alright. Staring at one of the screens, broadcasting the results from the different branches of the base division qualifiers. The Silver Badgers are listed as one of the new third division competitors. He’s… crying?

YOU: “Oh, not again Fred.”

FRIEDRICH: “Victor? Oh shit man! You did it!
You fucking did it! This is insane! This is isaaaane!”

There’s no way you can resist it. This guy has a direct connection to your funny bone. You start laughing, so much it hurts your stomach. Your place is reserved right beside him in the counter, just a small dose of brandy by his side. You do your secret handshake then a fist bump.

FRIEDRICH: “This is it man. This is what you needed. I already made some calls, people are interested on the Badgers, I sense some extra money coming our way and it is enough to get Rebecca on special patients section at the Dr. Reichleib Memorial Hospital.

YOU: “Seriously? Yes. YES!”

FRIEDRICH: “It’s here, my friend. It’s here. The day we waited for.

The bartender, still cleaning up the place, hands you a shot. A toast for the future to come. Things are looking up. You can do it. You can save. Her. Your phone, now in your pocket, starts ringing, and you wonder who could possibly be. Only Fred calls you, basically. You take the small device out of your jacket’s pocket. The name “Jared” is shown on the display. You answer the call.

YOU: “Whats up dad?”

JARED: “Victor? Thank god! You need to come to the hospital right now! Your sister! She’s going to surgery! Come quickly!

You freeze. This has got to be a joke.
