Welcome back to Best Dad Ever Quest! 3% better than the last Best Dad Ever Quest! Last time, we left you standing inside a bathroom, watching as Romeo proves his unworthiness to play the part, and Tybalt standing next to him, wondering who shall replace his foe. And your response? Let's find out!Twitter (follow if you wanna know what I'm doing and when it happens): https://twitter.com/artemisQMArchive (for the old threads): suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=ArtemisQMLet's get to it!---As you enter, you notice Romeo bent over the sink, throwing up whatever he must have had for lunch. Two of the other performers are next to him, one keeping him leaned over, another one making a call (Tybalt, actually), shouting angrily about a replacement.“Uh...is there a problem, guys?” you ask, peering at Romeo’s face. It seems it wasn’t just the makeup: the guy really is ill.Tybalt turns to you, sighing. “Sorry, sir, but Romeo here seems to have had food poisoning. There may be a slight delay in the second act.>You...need a replacement?>Welp, good luck!>Write In.

>>41305414Lucky is you! Welcome!
>>41304954“Uh...do you need a replacement?” you ask.Tybalt looks up at you, phone pressed against his ear. “Uh, yes, sir. We’re waiting now for our understudy to arrive, though he should have been here since the beginning of the show. Pardon me for a second. ANSWER THE FUCKING PHONE GERRY OR I WILL FIND YOU AND RIP YOUR HEAD OFF.” Tybalt growls, ending the call with a furious press of a button, turning back to Romeo. “Come on, mate, let’s get you to the break room.” He starts to walk away with Romeo. You follow, seeing an opportunity. “Actually, I’ve performed the play myself, and I still remember all the lines. If your understudy doesn’t show, I can take his place.”Tybalt turns back to you, frowning. “Romeo, the hate I bear thee can afford no better term than this: thou art a villain.”>roll 1d100That was too short.

>>41305765Indeed I did.
>>41305516You sigh, shaking your head. “Tybalt, the reason that I have to love thee doth much excuse the appertaining rage to such a greeting: villain I am none,” you turn back, face hardening, “Therefore farewell: I see thou know’st me not.”Tybalt nods, setting Romeo down carefully in a couch, giving him a wastebin that Romeo promptly makes use of. “Okay. You’re...good. But I’m not sure if you’re good enough. Come with me.” He gestures for you follow further on, and you do, passing through the many familiar sites of the backstage of a theatre. Actors sitting around, chatting; stage crew doing all the actual work; and the director, talking with a few of both, gesturing around at the lights and scenery on set. Tybalt leads you to the director.Tybalt interrupts the group. “Hey, Eddie! We’ve got a possible replacement for Kevin.” he gestures at you for the last words.Eddie turns to face Tybalt, then you, definite relief visible on his face, but quickly replaced by curiosity and concern. “Is he good enough?”Tybalt shrugs. “He seemed fine. Bit stiff, but he knew the lines, unlike Gerry.”Eddie nods, and looks at you. “Act for me, then.”Without a prompt, you cast around for a relevant set, and begin. You take on an air of worry and sadness. “Father, what news? What is the prince’s doom? What sorrow craves acquaintance at my hand, that I yet know not?”That felt a bit better than your earlier try, but Eddie still seems concerned. “Stiff indeed. How long has it been since you last acted, sir..?”“Mark Dunholdt. It’s been about...well, the last time I was on a stage was three years ago. I’ve done some other acting between then and now, but nothing as serious.”Eddie nods. “Then, I have a more important question for you...”You prepare yourself. You aren’t prepared.“What’s your inseam measurement?”---(1/2)
>>41305873Not too long after, you’re in a pair of slightly too tight pants, though the shirt you wear is airy enough that you aren’t being grabbed at all the joints. You quickly make acquaintance with all the other actors, and listen as Eddie makes an announcement of needing another ten minutes to the audience. He comes back, still not looking relaxed.“Next up, we have to worry about sword choreography. Do you know how to use a sword?”You grin at Eddie. “I’m a professional sword-fighter and fencer.”Eddie nods, a bit more happiness visible. “Ah, that’s good. Was wondering whether we’re going to have to cut that. What do you think?”>Cut it, just in case.>Keep it simple.>Tell whomever I fight to come at me with everything they’ve got, and assume I’ll be able to respond.

>>41305884You smile, twirling around the stage-foil they had given you. “No worries. Just tell them to make it look good and flashy. I’ll make sure that no one can get hurt.”Eddie nods, and returns back, shouting, “Five minutes! Get to your place!”---It’s been a while since you’ve acted, but you never forget this feeling, when you first step out on a stage, when the butterflies start in your stomach and you feel ice sliding through your muscles. And how the butterflies give you that nervous energy that you seize, the ice turning into a cooling, relaxing fuel, allowing you to act your heart out, riding that high of being on a platform, with thousands of eyes all on you. It’s glorious, and it passes quickly. When it comes to Mercutio dying to Tybalt, you seize upon your character and fight Tybalt in a glorious showdown. Tybalt seems to have received your instructions loud and clear, and is going for the huge, flashy hits that come down on you like a hailstorm. And you act the part of Romeo, neatly turning aside each one, up until you kill him, blade slicing at the bag just underneath his collar, letting out the flow of blood.Soon enough, it’s all gone, with you dying, Juliet following you, the applause, bowing, all the rest of it.As the feeling fades away again, you start to come back to Earth and recognize what’s going on around you. All the various actors are congratulating each other, and a few come up to you, giving their own approval on your performance. Tybalt himself is talking with another fellow, though it’s less talk and more shouting.“You let someone else take my role? How could you!”“Now listen here you little shit you should’ve been here waiting and ready. This was your fault.”Gerry (as you guess) scoffs, pointing at you. “Look at him! He’s no Romeo! He doesn’t have the form for it!”Tybalt’s teeth are grinding each other into dust at this point. “But he was here to act, and he did it a hell of a lot better than you.”(1/2)
>>41306321Gerry glares at the both of you before stomping off. You give your goodbye to Tybalt, and head back to the front to pick up your girls.---”Dad, you were AWESOME!” Jackie and Eve crow, on either side of you.You grin, ruffling their hair. “Thanks, girls.”Jackie laughs. “Seriously! You said you were just heading to the bathroom, not replacing the Romeo!”Eve laughs with her, and you all continue walking along, the lamp-posts shining down some light on your progress.“So, what now?”>Time for you girls to become better magical girls>We need to train for the upcoming Chivalry game.>Let’s just head to bed.

You both ready?”They look at each other, nod, and look back to you. “Ready as we’ll ever be.”---A drop of sweat falls from your forehead to the ground, splashing against a blade of grass. You shift slightly, blade still up and at the ready, though wavering slightly. Eve stands not five metres from your left, her eyes darting back and forth between you and Jackie. She’s wearing her light and loose archery kit, shortbow in one hand, with the other holding two arrows at the ready. Across the small of her back you know a dagger waits for whatever unlucky bastard gets too close. Jackie’s across from you, breathing heavily, wiping a strand of fiery red hair out of the way. In her hands is her magical item, a wand, though modified just a tad into a large morningstar, the head glowing a faint blue. Without her own equipment, you allowed her to use her magical gear, changed slightly to fit Chivalry. Her armor resembles something like a cleric would wear, heavy hauberk over a dress of chainmail, also with telltale symbols relating to her own magic. It seems Eve is preparing to quickly draw and fire at one of you. Eve draws her bow back fully, preparing to shoot in front to catch you, and Jackie starts running forward to meet you herself. You catch yourself, preparing to jump straight up, just above the arrow, allowing it to pass through to hit Jackie, and then you’d get in close to Eve while she’s unprepared. You jump, feet leaving the ground and rising up in the air, until they’re higher than your head, now setting you upside down , watching as...Eve’s fingers fumble just a little, meaning the arc of the arrow is higher than normal. It would still have hit Jackie...If your head weren’t in the way.You feel it slam into your head, even the blunted tip and helmet you wear not doing much for the sudden shock of pain in your system. As you start to fall to the ground, Jackie, being a bit faster on the uptake, comes after you, as of yet unaware that you just got hit. Which leads you your body crumpling around a morningstar, held up by an unyielding magical girl.Ow.You black out, and float on.

The only solid thing that you can see is the floor beneath you, which you’re lying on, and your own body.At the end of this room, which stretches out as you look down it, appears to be a door. >>41307521I do understand your point, and I find them abhorrent when thrown in randomly. They are good tools for storytelling, and where otherwise there might be a gap in narration I can instead offer progress in either the story itself or in character development.
>>41307558It's just it's usually random shit or bad riddles and inner person stuff always and it really REALLY get's annoying
>>41307558Just be careful with those. Dream sequences don`t offer much suspence, as they are "not real". A good exposition tool, though.

Anything I do will have a purpose, either to advance the plot or to develop character. Railroading also ties into this, and I'll avoid it, unless there are extenuating circumstances.2. I won't waste my own time. I'll try to avoid hanging onto one scene, I'll keep the story moving towards the end goal far ahead.3. I will accept criticism and feedback. I don't like it when people are unhappy, but for me that means fixing my mistakes and not crying like a little bitch. And the rule that will override all rules.4. No harems. Ever.
>>41307502Turning away from the wall, you look to the door at the end of the room. Even as the floor is solid and the walls are a membrane, the door sits between the two, in the realm of existence yet not as hard and corporeal as what’s underneath your feet. You walk over to the door, checking it over, before knocking.“Please come in.”You recognize that voice. You kick the door open, entering the study beyond that you vaguely recognize from a time long ago, books carefully scattered everywhere, the desk oriented to look outside and at the door at the same time, with a small potted plant sitting on a corner table. You ignore it all, striding forth and slamming your fists down on the desk, directing every drop of fury you have at its owner. The person in the chair watches you with something approaching amusement. “Before you get too upset, know that I’m not the person you’re thinking of.”Even as she says that, the words dripping from her mouth remind you so much of Her, the way that she just establishes everything She says as fact, how all of your views are rejected for nothing...You control yourself. “What do you want,” you force out, bringing your hands back to your side.“There we go! I’m surprised that you’ve been damaged this much.”“This is your fault?”She laughs. “Not directly. The person you’re thinking of stumbled upon one of my gates, many years ago. She didn’t handle it as well as your own daughter has.”Your eyes widen in realization. “She was a...magical girl?” You can’t accept that. She could never have been a champion, fending off the darkness.“You’re right, she couldn’t. That’s why she was corrupted instead.”You search your mind for the terms. “An Abomination?”“Not so far. But she was twisted, indeed. Do you remember that day she came home from a car accident?”Of course. No day is clearer in your mind. It’s when it all started to go wrong.(1/2)
>>41307925“It seized upon her, taking all her anger and fear and directing it at you, pointing fingers and laying the blame in such a way that it all started to be your fault.”You remember her leaving. You remember Her coming back.“And that was you?”She shakes her head. “No. We’re above what you would call the Witches and Abominations. They may have aspects of us, but they are diluted, specialized. That one was likely Wrath and Envy. My child, in a way.”You feel hollow. Your wife hadn’t changed. She’d died, that day she had gone out. Changed from who she was, to something else.“So you’re Envy?”“Yes.”“Why am I here? For you to tell me that my wife was corrupted by you?”“No. I want to ask a favor.”>No.>NO.>...Which would be?

Are you okay? Dad?”It’s getting real tiring opening your eyes to some new environment like this. You take your time in sitting up, getting accustomed to the new setting again, where the walls aren’t moving and your ears aren’t filled with that awful voice...Tears start running down your cheek as the full meaning of what just happened hits you.Your wife died. Cry like you’ve never cried before, more than you have in your entire life. The last time that you had cried was on the drive away from that horrible awful house where She lived, as Eve fell asleep in the passenger seat, when tears slowly rolled from your eyes as you felt yourself torn apart piece by piece, your love for your One and Only ripped away, shown to be a falsehood, a fake. And now, it’s been given back to you. So you cry, for your wife, for Juliette Dunholdt, the girl who you met at fencing club, the girl who you gave up Chivalry for, the girl who had left the house with a smile on her face and the keychain spinning around on her finger, declaring that you were going to have takeaway for dinner. She’s gone. And you cry.Eventually, the tears dry up. You don’t know how much later. Eve was there the entire time, holding you up. After a second, you let her go, wiping away your face.“Eve. Juliette...she died, that day. She never came back.”Eve wipes away one of her own sympathy tears, and smiles at you. Nothing else needs to be said. But, now to get more serious. “Something else, though. Envy visited me, in that dream.”“Envy? The Sin?”“Yes. Before I left, she told me that she wanted me to kill the other Sins for her.”(1/2)
>>41308775Jackie frowns. “Why? What was she going to give you?”You shrug. “I kinda started walking as soon as she said she wanted a favor.”“As you should’ve. But...what do we do now?”You look between the two, and smile. “Well, I think I’ve got an idea for a fun family activity. For later, though. I think tonight I’m just ready to go to bed.”You head on home, talking a little bit about how good the play was, and some plans for the weekend (apart from the Chivalry game, you know you’ve got to go to Lucy’s initiation class) and how school went for the both of them. When you arrive home, heading to bed, Eve gives you one last hug. “She’s still in our hearts, Dad. Mom never died.”And with that, you go to sleep.Just gonna write up the start of the next day.

You head out to the kitchen, passing by the pile of armor where you left it last night (probably going to have to clean that today), and pull out the eggs, spring onion, and salmon, and begin preparing a nice wholesome breakfast. The trick to making scrambled eggs is actually preparing it as you would an omelette. You add some milk to the eggs when you first beat them, to give them a much more fluffy consistency, and beat them fairly well. Don’t forget the spring onion. Use butter, not oil, for the pan. Once everything’s in and cooking, sprinkle a little bit of cheese over it all once it starts to solidify, then lie the strips of smoked salmon over it all. Fold. By this point, that delectable scent of eggs and the saltiness of the salmon is filling the air with its delicious scent. It’s scientifically proven that 87% of magical girl daughters will react to such a scent, and they do, a slight thump heard at their door before Eve and Jackie emerge, Jackie rubbing her head where a bruise is appearing. You finish by folding and cutting it all into little pieces, essentially making mini omelettes. And finally, you serve, a slight dusting of pepper on it all.The daughters both thank you as they begin to eat, and you eat yourself. The time is 6:00 AM. School starts at...uh...eight. You think. >>41309908You jog on over to the group, feeling pretty warmed up. “Morning!”“Hey, morning! Fancy joining us?”“Well, you guys up for a full game? Full field.”They look amongst each other and shrug. “Yeah, we’re up for it.”Soon enough, some teams are decided, with Eve and Jackie on the other team, along with three others, and you’re partnered with your four. Your team pulls, and you decide to take it.“GO LONG” You roar with all your might as the frisbee slices through the air, all the way across the field. Whoever you had first talked to has the longest fucking stride on this planet, covering the field and getting inside the goal zone far before the frisbee gets past the first opponent, and catches it gracefully. As the teams switch sides, you stop Eve for a bit, examining her. “Eve. It seems like you’re upset.”“I’m not upset.”“Are you okay? You should calm down.”She lifts you up by your collar, grinding her teeth as she quietly screams “I am not upset.”It’s on. You’re prepped, you’ve got the lead, and the enemy is salty. Time to play ultimate frisbee.---The score is five to four, your team in the lead. You’re incredibly sure that Eve and Jackie are using magic to get some insane jumps, but you’ve got no way to react.Apart from utterly woop their asses, of course.Your team is pretty hyped up, and seems to be enjoying the game. The other team is a perfect match, and it’s going neck and neck, though every time you get hold of the frisbee you dominate.“PULL!” Mr. Long Fucking Legs roars, sending it flying almost as much as your initial toss. You start running, checking the opponents to see their moves.>Go for it. If it’s close enough, you might be able to run it in>Let the other team have it.

>>41310497Oh piss off asshole, She'd be even more upset if we didn't take it seriously
>>41310330You run faster and faster, and see that Eve’s about to go for the frisbee.OH NO YOU DON’T.Even with whatever little trick boosts she’s got going on, She’s not the one who climbed a ten foot wall back in the glorious days of Chivalry where there were month long games where you built fortresses only to blow them up.Your feet leave the ground, your hand reaches up, and the frisbee’s path through the air is cleanly cut off with your hand. As you start to descend again, landing on your left foot, you launch off again, straight forward.First step. Jackie’s attempting to get in front of you, to prevent the advance.Second steps. She’s now directing in front of you, ready to block you. You jump up again, legs lifting up until you’re parallel with the ground, gliding right over her head.Third step. You’re in the goal zone. You slowly turn, facing Eve and Jackie, who are both watching you with awe and anger, and you quietly ask, “hey guys, stay calm.”---After getting punched twice, and exchanging numbers with the ultimate group (who’d love to have you for a game on Sunday!) you start heading back towards the house, where the girls go get showered, and you prepare yourself for a day of>More work! You’ve never been before, but it sounds okay.Of course, you’re going for another reason. You manage to find a parking lot close by, and walk on over, browsing all the stalls. You quickly realize one flaw in Lucy’s plan: there are plenty guys here. Because, you know, ‘guy’ is an awfully vague term.Looking around the stalls, you try to find one that seems obviously magical, but you don’t really have much luck. In the end, you’ve only got a few stalls that seem like they’d be entrances to whatever mystical magical place you’re going to.>An actual magic stall. Lucy referred me, right?”He nods. “Luce sent me a call. Come with me, I got some questions to ask you.”You follow him as he walks down along the stalls, occasionally stopping as he socializes with some of the owners. He seems pretty well-known. Soon enough, you’ve reached the end of the square, up against some large fountain. It seems rather shimmery, as if there were a heat haze around it, before you realize that no one else is looking at it, apart from you and the butcher. He grunts in satisfaction as you realize the nature of the fountain. “That’s step one. Now, climb in.”“Into the fountain?”“Yep.”You shrug, and step in, not too surprised to find that there isn’t any sensation of wetness around your legs as you do so. The butcher does the same, stepping in and over into the fountain, and leading you to the stone block in the centre of it. Without pausing, he walks right on through, pulling you in.Emerging from the fountain into some interior rooom is slightly disorientating, and you take some time to re-align.“Now...”You look up to the butcher, who’s standing above, his eyes drilled on you. “It’s time for the final question...”You prepare yourself. He shoves a wallet into your face, photos inside one of those laminated foldouts spilling onto the ground. “What do you think of my daughter?”“Huh?”“She killed her first set of Shadows only a week ago! Less aww, more ‘is my daughter as good as this?’. You performed just wonderfully.”“Ah...thanks.”“No problem.”“That picture with the trophy head was pretty cool though.”He grins. “Oh, I know. He reveals that he is George Buffer, a recent mover to the city, with his girl having changed into something distinctly more magical about two months ago. Since then, he’d become the soccer mom equivalent for magical girl parents, driving her around to kill more monsters to rack up points and such. He said that she could get jobs down here to clean up a specific area, because removing monsters from certain areas would generally improve the mood of the public, and thus prevent it from getting as bad. The ‘spawning’ of Witches, Abominations, Shadows, and the plain grunts was all based on the emotions of an area, so it was good to keep things happy. If it wasn’t, though, you could earn some good money, and favors, for forcing it away from misery.“So, what’s your daughter up to? Even the waiter stops in to listen, his own expression changing to match the awe and disbelief of George, but both have one overwhelming emotion conquering it all: there’s no way that anyone could make this shit up.“...and then I was contacted by Envy to see if I could do her a favor and kill the other Sins for her. Turned her down, though. And that’s the last magical thing that happened to me,” you finish.“Wow,” they both say.“That was one of the greatest works of bullshit I’ve ever heard,” George declares, leaning back in his chair. “Truly, a miracle.”The waiter nods. “Very impressive. Your storytelling skills are amazing.”You chuckle, accepting another bowl of soba. “Thanks. What would it take to prove I’m telling the truth?”“May we see your caneblade? And not even magical, from what I can tell.”You shrug. “It did some weird things during both the Abomination and Wrath god fight, but that might’ve been me...”The waiter chuckles. “Bit more unlikely. No, the power didn’t come from the blade, I think. But that blade is still dangerous, and it’s been where you’ve described.” The waiter hands it back to you, bowing. “I am more than impressed, Mr. Dunholdt. If you ever find yourself in need of work involving swordsmanship, do not hesitate to come back here.”George laughs. “God damn, Mark! You got yourself a real life acceptance letter into one of the most exclusive places on earth!”You raise an eyebrow. “Miyagi Soba Stall?”George laughs again. “No, no. That’s where the big leagues are!”You frown. “Big leagues?”George nods. “Japan has a huge competitive Magical Girl scene. That’s progressed to a point where it’s less about you selling a product, and more about you upholding the image of whoever you represent.”“Ah. That’s pretty neat.”The waiter hands you a card. “Either way, it’s not necessary for your daughter to come over. But your own skills would be very much in demand, especially if you can handle a Sin on your own, however much weakened, and let alone an abomination. And monocle?”Thongs chuckles. “That I can have fun with. What do you want, exactly?”“What perception things can you do?”“Anything that amuses me. The X-ray clothing one is a lot of fun, especially if it goes right to the bones.”“...Probably not what I’m looking for.”“Suit yourself.”“How much would this cost? And how long?”“Money depends on time. I’ll get around to it eventually. Just matters on speed. Do you have the suit and monocle on you?”“Ah, no.”“Welp, I’m closing soon, so you might want to come back tomorrow with it, then.”>Go home (This ends the thread, since I’m tired).>Just want to explore a bit more (few more actions)
