When we last left our protagonist, he had just defeated the sorcerer Shang Tsung, possibly for good. With the spirit of his father freed, along with Kitana's best friend Jade, Kaito needed a good rest.

Though the fortress was devastated by the final battle, they were able to find a few rooms intact to rest in. Kaito awakens in a large bed with ornate red sheets; it must've belonged to Shang Tsung.

"Kill a man, sleep in his bed..." Kaito chuckles to himself.

"He won't be needing it anymore," a voice says as Jade enters the room. Kaito looks up at the emerald-clad beauty as she stands at the foot of the bed. "We brought you here after the battle. You've been asleep for nearly a day."

Kaito rubs his head. "Was one hell of a battle."

She nods. "And a valiant rescue, for which I will be forever grateful."

Kaito looks up at Jade. "So what have you guys been up to while I was out of it? Explore the palace any?"

"Turana has been studying Shang Tsung's magical tome, perhaps a little obsessively. She is convinced she can use his magic for good, though I've never known any to touch the Dark Arts and walk away clean."

"Think I should talk to her?"

"She seems wise, but the council of others is never ill-advised. Sheeva and your... tarkatan... have been standing guard, though none have approached the palace."

Kaito stretches his sore muscles and scratches his head. "Hmm. Perhaps we should give this place another once-over. Do you know where this 'Dark Prison' is?"

"Yes, I do," she replies. "It is far underground the palace courtyard. I was taken there before he imprisoned me inside that snake medallion."

Kaito gets up and walks out of the room with Jade. "So, what's your past with Kitana like?"

"I have known Kitana for many centuries. While my duties to the Emperor kept us from being too close, I was always torn between my loyalty to her and the Emperor."

"She was your friend?"

"Perhaps my only true friend, yes. I realized it far too late. I should have been helping her assist Earthrealm far earlier than I did."

"Everyone makes mistakes," Kaito replies. "I take it you're not a big supporter of the Emperor anymore?"

"No. I support Kitana fully now. It is my hope that, eventually, we can separate Edenia from Outworld and she can rule there. Edenia was so long ago, that I can barely remember its beauty..."

"I think she has similar goals, but right now she's back at Shao Kahn's Fortress. We should return there as soon as possible."

As they round a corner, they discover Sheeva. "You are well again?" she asks Kaito, who nods. Sheeva gives Jade an odd look. "We should return to Kitana, then."

Jade doesn't seem trustful of the Shokan. "Yes, indeed."

Kaito gets between them. "Great! So let's leave immediately, huh? Don't want to waste any time!"

He leads them both down the hall towards the main hall, which is still split in half from Kaito's earlier attack. The massive hole where Shang Tsung's soulnado once emerged remains, and in front of it lies Turana, flipping through the pages of the old book.

Kaito approaches her. "Turana?"

She looks up with a smile. "Kaito! I am happy to see you up and about! Come, look at this!"

She opens the book to a specific entry. "This spell here deals with soul constructs. I believe we could use it on that warrior we have encountered before--Ermac, is his name? To free his souls!"

"Interesting... But we should probably get going."

She pouts. "But I'm not done yet! This book is so interesting... and just think of what else we could learn from his library! We should stay at least a while longer to give me time to study!"

Kaito looks at her with a bit of concern. "You don't think it's dangerous?"

"I have magic too, you remember," she says. "I can protect myself!"

Find out the likelyhood that anyone else felt the Soulnado's dissolution and Shang Tsung's subsequent lightninging.
If there's any chance Quan Chi or anyone can, then tell her to take what's important and we're leaving.
If there's less/no chance she can study while we go clear the Dark Prison and but has to be done by the time we're back.

Also tell her we totally know she knows magic and we trust her. But we also know that evil magic can corrupt and Shang liked practicing the evilest of shit. Also there's a high chance a good bit of it is booby trapped.

Kaito places a hand on her side. "You know I trust you, Turana." She smiles. "But Shang Tsung practiced some dark and evil shit, you know that too. How do we know it won't change you?"

Her smile vanishes slowly. "Perhaps... But think of all he accomplished. If I can find a way to reverse it, we could do so much good!"

Kaito thinks. "Shang Tsung's death may have left some kind of gap in the power flow of Outworld, does that make sense?"

"Yes, but I'm not sure what that--"

"Follow me on this. Could anyone else, like Quan Chi, have detected this? Could anyone be on there way here to check up on him?"

"It's... possible, yes. If anyone cared to follow his power or spy on him."

"Keep your friends close and your enemies closer," Kaito says. "We're going to search the Dark Prison. Study and take as much as you can until we come back. When we do, we're heading straight back to Shao Kahn's fortress to link up with Kitana."

"I won't let you down, Kaito," she smiles.

"I know."

Kaito goes to rejoin Sheeva and Jade. "Where's Tortek?" he asks.

"In the courtyard, like a good watchdog," Sheeva says.

Kaito, Sheeva and Jade head out into the Courtyard to collect Tortek. Jade approaches the center of the courtyard and takes out her metal rod that elongates to her battle staff, placing it on the ground.

"You will want to stand back," she warns, and they do. Channeling some of her inner power into the groove, she activates a spell that causes the courtyard to open, revealing a circular passage leading downwards with a twisting staircase.

"Shang Tsung would keep his personal torture subjects or experiments here," she says as they begin to descend the staircase. "Here, they might as well not exist."

"What do you hope to find in this place?" Sheeva asks him.

"Don't know," Kaito says. "Anything I can, I suppose."

The Dark Prison lives up to its name, being dimly lit and dirty, rusty and bloody. The steel floors, walls and cells all look somewhat ancient, with dripping hooks hanging on the ends of chains. The lamentations of prisoners within the cells can be heard even from a great distance, combining into a ghoulish wail.

"Keep watch for guards," Kaito warns his allies. They pass by bloody and stinking cells, but as they near one in particular, the smell grows even more foul.

"By the Elder Gods, what is that stench?" Jade asks.

Kaito looks into a cell and sees a skinless corpse that appears to be the source of the smell. "Eyyuck. I think we should--"

The corpse springs to life and screams as it throws itself against the bars, shocking all of them. "FREE MEEEEE!" it cries. "RELEEEEAAASE MEEE!"

Kaito's eyes widen as the skinless, blood-dripping arm reaches out at him through the bars, though he is just out of reach.

They all shake their heads.

The corpse speaks again, its voice hollow and banshee like, as though his vocal chords aren't fully formed. "I... amm... MEEAAT!"

"What are you?" he asks. "Other than meat, I mean."

The creature rears back and holds up an arm, then begins to claw at itself, tearing a chunk of bloody muscle off and exposing the bone beneath. The revolting display is topped off by the creature feasting on itself, biting down on the chunk.

"...That didn't answer my question."

"I am Meeaat... I am flesssh and blood! I am a sslave to the makerr, a prisonerr! FREEE MEEE! So long... so lossst..."

Kaito crosses hos arms as he assesses the situation.

Kaito thinks that the creature is a few screws short of a full set, but perhaps could be useful.

I'd consider gene-splicing (at least the way Shang does it where it makes a new person as opposed to mutating an existing person like say the Batman villain Man-Bat) to be a form of cloning. After all, Mileena is a gene-splice but they just call her a Kitana clone.

They give him a wise berth as he emerges. They point him to the stairs and his fleshy cheeks twist into a smile.

"I won't forget," he says. "First perrrson to show Meat kindness. I not forgettt."

He turns and runs off, his feet making disgusting splashing and slapping noises on the floor.

"Revolting creature," Sheeva sneers.

"Who knows, maybe he will help," Kaito shrugs.

Kaito inspects other cells. They are occasionally inhabited by native outworlders, starved individuals who moan and beg for release. Some of them are beasts, who snarl and snap at them as they pass by.

Kaito doesn't see a master release of any kind, and even if there was, both the helpless people and the native beasts would be released all at once.

"Are we going to leave them here?" Jade asks.

"We can't carry them all, certainly," Sheeva replies. "Perhaps a quick death would be most merciful."

"Maybe we can take them somewhere..." Kaito suggests. "A nearby village or something..."

Kaito takes a few minutes more to cook up the remaining animals. After all is said and done, Tortek chops them up and they dish them out to the survivors, who thank them greatly before moving up the stairs.

Kaito and the rest follow, heading back into the palace. There, they are confronted with Turana, who is finishing up her work. "Are you ready?" she asks.

Kaito nods. The sphinx gives him a puzzled look. "Though, I do not believe I can carry all of you at once, now that we have a fifth."

Jade crosses her arms. "I'm not going back into the medallion."

"Oh, score!" Kaito says, throwing a fist into the air. "This thing is magic, right?"

Turana nods. "This is a Nethership--it can cross between realms!"

Kaito smiles smugly. "I bet Shang would be rolling in hell if he saw us take this bad boy."

Jade nods eagerly. "With this, we could teleport nearly anywhere in Outworld! Provided there is a body of water, of course."

"Can you pilot it, Turana?"

"I can try... I hope we get it right."

Kaito smiles. "Let's give it a shot!"

They climb aboard the vessel and take places on the deck. Turana takes out Shang Tsung's spellbook and prepares an incantation. As they bring up the anchor and prepare the ship for movement, a great fog rolls in around the ship.

"Is that normal?" Jade asks.

"Yeah, I remember that part," Kaito replies.

Turana begins chanting and the ship moves out into the lagoon, and is soon encased completely in fog.

A whirling sound is heard and there is a great rush of wind as the nethership begins to pass through dimensional barriers. Everyone holds on as the ancient ship rocks and sways across the dimensional tides, its wooden hull shaking and its tattered sails flapping in the wind. After several moments, the noises cease and once more the vessel is calm, surrounded by fog.

It emerges from its foggy cloud and everyone is greeted by the sight of Shao Kahn's city-fortress in the distance. The ship pulls towards a large wooden dock, where many other ships are kept. Crews of various species and ill-reputable looking pirates, smugglers and warriors mill about the area throughout a few camps here and there; there is a trail of firepits alongside a road leading to the city.

Turana commands the ship to stop at the end of a dock and looks back at them. "Nobody can take this vessel, unless they are a powerful sorcerer. And since we just limited that number in Outworld by one, I'd say our chances are good.

Kaito doesn't feel up to spending time talking with pirates and begins heading towards the city. Following the trail, he makes it to the marketplace surrounding the fortress, which seems to be in an uproar. The guards are running around, trying to keep the peace and executing upstart citizens, who appear to be in revolt.

A man steals a crate from another merchant and runs. Kaito shoots a small bolt of lightning at his foot, tripping him. He walks up and holds the man down, asking, "Tell me what's happening!"

The man is manic. "Revolution! The Emperor is dead, and everyone is fighting for his throne! Plenty of distraction for the commoners like us to loot and make away with whatever we want!"

Nearby, several civilians overturn a cart and pillage its upturned contents.

Sheeva crosses her four arms. "It figures that the Emperor's death would cause a gap in power. Civil war may be upon us."

Kaito looks back at the man. "Where is the Princess Kitana?"

"She is in the fortress!" the man desperately replies. "She fights for the throne!"

"Then we must help her immediately," Turana says.

"If things are this bad out here, I can only imagine what's going down in that fortress," Kaito says. "Let's not waste anymore time! Let's go!"

Kaito takes off running and the others follow. Turana soars ahead and scouts the perimeter of the fortress.

Kaito runs through the open main gate and into the fortress' courtyard, where Kahn's former guards are battling a tarkatan horde. Alongside them, groups of centaurs and shokans are skirmishing with each other.

Sheeva looks on with a furrowed brow. "The Emperor kept the warring races in line. Now they fight freely amongst each other. I must help my people!"

Tortek sniffs the air. "Baraka here somewhere," he says. "I smell him!"

Jade looks towards the fortress. "Kitana must be in the throne room! She'll need as much help as possible!"

Kaito tells the same to Tortek, who runs off in hunt of his quarry, eager to get some revenge for his time spent under Baraka's brutal punishments.

Kaito and the others take off into the fortress, searching for the throne room. All around them the sounds of battle and war can be heard, and parts of the fortress are broken or on fire, with tapestries and carpets burning.

As they round a corner, they come upon a three-pronged path. One leads to the war room, another leads to the great dining hall, and the third leads up the stairs to the throne room.

They can look and see into the other two rooms and see that battles are occurring in both. Ermac, the red-clad soul construct, is battling a group of tarkatans in the dining hall. Reiko and Rain are fighting each other, curiously enough, in the war room.

Ignoring both battles, they make their way to the throne room. There, they discover Kitana, who is locked in fierce battle with the unrelenting Mileena. The edenian and her clone are like two whirlwinds crashing against each other, speed and fury made manifest. Jade wastes no time in preparing to leap into the fray and defend her friend from the evil half-breed.

Kaito waits for a moment to jump in and then teleports between the two of them. "YOU!" Mileena shouts before she is on the receiving end of a headbutt. Kaito then blasts her backwards with his lightning, giving them some distance. Jade runs up to Kitana.

"Jade!" she exclaims giving her friend a brief hug before turning her attention once more to Mileena.

Like a wounded animal, Mileena gets up and stalks around them slowly in a circle. "The throne will be mine!" Mileena shouts. "I am Shao Kahn's heir by his decree!"

"You hold no authority! No true claim!" Kitana replies. "You are nothing more than a mutant!"

As if on cue from the word, Baraka leaps from behind the throne. Jade and Kitana leap away as the tarkatan leader roars and attacks Kaito, who is put on the defensive as the tarkatan swipes and strikes out with his arm-blades.

"YOU!" Baraka shouts at Kaito. "YOU HAVE LIVED TOO LONG!"

"And life couldn't be short enough for you," Kaito replies, readying his heavy metal gauntlets.

Kaito brings up his hands to block each attack but finds himself hard-pressed to get an attack of his own in. Meanwhile, Jade and Kitana are battling Mileena, who is holding her own against the edenian double-team.

Baraka slashes again, forcing Kaito backwards as he blocks the attack with his gauntlets. The tarkatan sneers and blasts Kaito with a spark from his blades, which burns his leg slightly. Kaito grits his teeth and charges at the tarkatan, who backflips and kicks Kaito in the chin, knocking him onto his back.

The tarkatan leaps up and prepares to land atop the human and impale him when suddenly from a nearby hallway Tortek leaps in and tackles Baraka mid-air to the floor! Kaito watches as the two tarkatans roar and hack at each other, their blades sparking as they clash.

Nearby, Mileena throws her sai at Jade, who dodges. Kitana kicks Mileena in the back, but the pink-clad clone rolls forward in a ball and trips Jade before springing up and delivering a vicious uppercut to the emerald warrior's midsection. Kitana catches her friend and helps her to her feet as Mileena's sai reappear in her hands.

Kaito leaps at Baraka as Tortek distracts him, grabbing the sides of his head and shocking him. The tarkatan's limbs flail as his body is pumped full of electricity.

Tortek takes advantage of the opportunity and leaps forward, shoving his arm-blade through Baraka's throat, and out the other side to where Kaito can see it. The tarkatan leader's eyes grow wide as the life fades from them and his blood runs down the blade towards Kaito.

They both let go and drop him to the floor.

Kaito teleports away as Mileena notices Baraka's death. Suddenly out of allies, she fights desperately until Jade and Kitana back her into a corner. The pink-clad clone's eyes dart back and forth as they close in.

Kaito steps between them. "Wait!" he says. "Can't we give her a chance?"

Kitana looks at him as if he is mad. "Surely you jest? She is an abomination, a thing of evil!"

"She's also kind of the only family you have left, right?" Kaito asks. Kitana seems to falter a bit.

"I do not think I could call her any true family of mine," Kitana says. "She was born of Shang Tsung's sorcerery."

Mileena continues to listen silently. Jade shakes her head. "I do not agree with you Kaito, I am sorry. She's too dangerous to be left alive."

She throws aside her sai blades. Kitana shakes her head. "The first thing you tried to do when you awoke was kill me. I can't trust you."

"May you find peace in the Netherrealm," Jade says.

"NO!" Mileena cries out. "Mercy! SISTER!"

Kitana takes out her razor-fan. "I am NOT your sister." She raises it high and prepares to deliver a killing blow.

Kitana nods. "The battle is not yet ended. I'll need your help, Kaito."

He nods and walks after the two.

Kaito walks with Jade in leading Mileena down to the lower levels of the dungeons. All around them, the battle continues to rage as the legions of Outworld fight for dominance. Down in the lower levels, several prisoner riots have been quelled by the guards. They attempt to stop Jade, but the edenian orders them back, saying that since they are loyal to Shao Kahn, and as his adopted daughter, Kitana now holds the throne and must be obeyed. They are cowed by this and head back to keeping the remaining prisoners calm.

Jade puts Mileena in the cell and the clone looks up at Kaito. "Why?" she asks.

"Everyone deserves a chance," Kaito replies. "You don't have to go through life being a killing machine. Knowing WHEN to kill is important, and the answer isn't 'always,' Mileena."

She looks at Kaito, her eyes blazing orange from underneath her raven bangs, and she says, "I won't be in this cage forever."

"And what you do when you get out of it depends on you," Kaito replies. "If you act out, or try to kill another, especially your sister, I'll be there, and I won't be so nice the second time around."

Mileena reaches a hand out and touches Kaito's arm. "You... like me, don't you?" she asks. "You think I'm beautiful? That's why you saved me, isn't it?"

Kaito steps back. "Maybe one day you'll learn that people can be kind without wanting something in return. It's called being selfless."

Mileena's eyes flash. "I call it foolishness."

Kaito turns away and nods at Jade, who will stand guard.

Kaito walks up the stairs and heads towards the throne room. Outside, the courtyard crawls with fighting enemies. The centaurs and shokan are battling each other with all the hatred and fury of centuries of competing with each other for favor, and the fortress still stands but fighting of this magnitude could easily reduce it to rubble if it is allowed to continue for a few days.

Atop the stairs, he enters the throne room again and finds it suddenly barren, save for one person: Rain. Kitana, Tortek and Turana are gone, and the purple-clad lightning warrior is standing in front of the throne, gently placing a hand on one of its armrests. His back is to Kaito and he hasn't noticed him yet.

"When I left this room, you sure as hell weren't in it," Kaito calls out.

Rain turns around, surprised. "Ah, look who it is. The boy from Earthrealm who plays at lightning."

"Last time I checked, I had you beat," Kaito replies.

"Our match ended prematurely, I assure you," Rain replies, circling around the room with Kaito mimicking his movements. "What a shame that was."

"I'm up for Round 2 if you are, purple man," Kaito says.

Rain chuckles. "Ah, but we're on the same side, you and I," he says. "I have pledged myself to the rulership of Princess Kitana."

"Awful lot of heel-turning going on around here all of a sudden," Kaito says. "Makes a man seem untrustworthy."

"Or perhaps it makes another man paranoid," Rain says. "I have already secured the war room and fought off Reiko, who sought to control Outworld for himself, to wear Shao Kahn's helmet and sit on his throne. What's more, Kitana herself has accepted my pledge of loyalty."

"And why would she?" Kaito asks, now on the opposite end of the room from where he entered.

"Because I am one of the few remaining edenians of royal ancestry left, one of the only princes left, and we must all be united in cause."

Kaito narrows his eyes. Rain is edenian? A prince?

Rain crosses his arms. "It seems that the tormentors have been released by the centaurs and are tearing apart the arena. Kitana went to lure them back into their pens, and your sphinx friend went with her. Your tarkatan 'pet' went to the armory to secure it. She instructed me to hold the throne room."

"I should help her," Kaito says. "I've seen those tormentors."

Rain shrugs. "If you want to help, the armory is unsecure. Our soldiers need those weapons, and I the tarkatans are fighting for them. Then again... perhaps I should go assist Kitana and you should stay here to hold the throne room. I doubt you'd be of mush use to her anyway."

Kaito looks towards the hall that leads to the armory. "I'll be back, Rain. You'd better be telling the truth."

The prince laughs. "Go on then and see, human."

Kaito runs to the armory, where he discovers a battle taking place, which Kaito quickly surveys. A rogue shadow priest has organized several of the armory guards into battling the tarkatans, who are being led by Tortek, who is holding aloft Baraka's severed head in one hand. Evidently, Tortek has used it as proof that he is now fit to lead the tarkatans and they are listening.

Kaito would be proud if there wasn't a battle to be had.

The tarkatans and the guards clash as the shadow priest prepares a spell.

Kaito blasts a bolt of lightning at the Shadow Priest, stunning him, then teleports behind him and delivers a vicious combo. The shadow priest manages to teleport away in a puff of shadowy smoke before reforming across the room.

Kaito gives a resounding thunderclap which gets everyone's attention. "THIS BATTLE IS OVER! By the decree of Queen Kitana, end it now!"

Tortek listens and holds his tarkatans back, but the shadow priest whispers into the ears of the armory guards, "Do not listen! Kitana is not your ruler! Drive these vermin from the grounds!"

The armory guards pick up their weapons and charge again.

Kaito charges up his inner power and blasts the armory guard, causing them to stumble and falter. The tarkatans charge in, taking advantage of their fallen state. Kaito blasts the shadow priest again before leaping over to him and landing behind him, reaching up to snap his neck. The shadow priest dies, its body instantly deteriorating and the purple robes falling to the ground.

After another few moments, Tortek has the surviving guards rounded up and brought before Kaito. "What should we do with them?" the tarkatan asks.

"Tortek, get them to the dungeons. I'll let Kitana decide their fate."

Tortek nods and instructs his tarkatans to lead them away. "I need to go get the others under control. I lead them away from the fortress, away from city. Into the wastelands."

"Are you sure?" Kaito asks him. Tortek nods. "Alright. Be safe."

Tortek pauses. "Kaito. I lead tarkatans now. Could not do this without your help."

The human smiles and clasps his friend's shoulder. "Hey, it's the least I could do."

Tortek shakes his head. "No, not understand. Tortek not sure if he could kill Baraka alone. Not sure ready to lead tarkatans."

Kaito pauses before smiling again. "Tortek, you'll do just fine. Remember: you're the strongest now. You've taken on fights no tarkatan could ever walk away from. Take pride in how far you've come and lead them. Keep them away from the city."

Tortek nods, his resolve strengthened. "Tarkatans will need enemies," he says. "They not quiet for long."

"We'll worry about finding them enemies later. We need to get the city back under control first."

The tarkatan nods and runs off to lead the mutant hordes.

Kaito runs at a brisk sprint towards the arena, where several of the tormentors are on a rampage. Two of them have climbed into the stands and are tearing apart the stonework of the arena while guards attempt to fight them and throw nets on them. In the arena proper, Kitana is atop one of the tormentors, riding atop its head while she holds onto the collar around its neck. Turana is attempting to use her magic on one to put it to sleep, but they are far too enraged for any useful charm magic to be effective.

Kaito teleports near the tormentor that Kitana is atop and blasts its leg, forcing it downwards. Kitana leaps off and rolls, allowing Kaito to run up its back. He grabs its horns and shocks its head, stunning it temporarily.

Kitana throws a fan at its face; the razor-sharp weapon spins and cuts into its skull, slicing up its brain. The Tormentor twitches and becomes still. Kaito jumps off and joins her as they survey the remaining six tormentors.

"Wrangling these beasts could take too long," Kitana says. "But if we don't, the carnage they could wreak on the city is immense."

Kaito looks at her. "You head back to the fortress. I'll handle these."

"Are you certain?" she asks.

Sheeva is handling the centaurs with the shokan. It would be good to cut their battle short before they wreck the city more.

Inform her that the Armory is secure, and Tortek is off to whip order among the tarkatans.

Kaito nods. "Go. I've got this. The armory is secure, and Tortek is leading the tarkatans away. Go and get control--And maybe send help when you're done."

Kitana doesn't question him and turns back towards the fortress and runs. Kaito looks back at the rampaging rancors and prepares himself.

Nearby, Turana flies up as a tormentor brings both fists down, nearly smashing her. She grows to her massive state and tackles it to the ground, rolling around with it and raking it with her claws. Five more remain.

Kaito approaches the dead tormentor and takes hold of a torn, using his other hand and a little electric energy to snap it off. He charges at one of the tormentors and leaps before teleporting up to its face and impaling its eye with the horn!

Kaito lands and rolls away as the tormentor roars in pain, clawing at the horn in its eye. He looks up as it sways and knocks over a pillar, sending stones and sand everywhere as it stumbles around.

It notices Kaito and roars before charging at him and reaching out with its massive clawed hand in his direction.

Kaito leaps out of the attack and charges up a bolt of lightning. He aims carefully and blasts the monster right in the eye, blinding it completely! The blind-raged monster charges and Kaito baits it towards another tormentor. They crash into each other and the blind one claws madly as the second tormentor tries to fight it off, now focused solely on its cousin.

That's three down. Turana is still struggling with hers, leaving three others, two of which are fighting guards.

Kaito teleports next to one that a group of men are fighting. It picks up one and tosses him across the arena as the human runs up to its leg and prepares a brutal assault. Utilizing the full power of his Bloody Hands style, coupled with his heavy gauntlets, Kaito smashes and beats the knee of the monster, forcing it down. One of the soldiers throws a hooked chain into its nose and two of them pull it down to the ground, where the others begin to stab at its neck and exposed weak points.

Kaito looks up and sees a tormentor nearing the wall of the arena, preparing to climb over and into the city proper. The damage it could cause to the markets could be catastrophic, and there are fewer guards outside to contain it due to all the fighting throughout the capital.

As he prepares to stop it, he hears a terrible cry and looks over to see Turana's fight with her tormentor has gone suddenly badly. The monster has hooked a clawed hand into her side and has pulled her down where it has bitten her neck and is sinking its teeth deeply into her. The bite is powerful and she is in a bad position, unable to reach him with the rest of her claws and unable to concentrate on the spell to shrink down to human size.

Kaito forgoes the scaling tormentor and teleports atop the one attacking Turana. He blasts it to get its attention before leaping off and shooting it again with more bolts. The monster lets go of the sphinx and turns its full attention upon Kaito and roars.

"Bring it on, you ugly freak!" he shouts. "COME ON!"

He blasts it again to piss it off and lures it away from her, towards the center of the arena. The tormentor roars at him and prepares to charge.

Kaito dodges its first swipe and then its second before he launches himself upwards, propelling himself with electricity and slamming his knee into the monster's face. It roars and steps back before swiping at him again, but he teleports away atop it. He attempts to grab its horns but the monster shakes its head vigorously and throws him off. Kaito gets back up before it slams a massive fist into the dirt and sand and he gets some distance between himself and the beast.

Kaito holds up his hands and assaults the beast with a storm of lightning bolts, blasting its thick hide and scales and leaving scorchmarks. The monster roars and rears its head up and tries to block the attack with its arms. Kaito thrusts his hands out rapidly, each one sending a bolt at his massive foe, striking it over and over and over. He shouts as he unleashes a final combined bolt that sends the beast onto its back.

He pants as he approaches it, finding that it is not dead, but gravely wounded. Kaito prepares the last bit of his energy for a final attack.

Kaito leaps atop the monster's chest and rains blows down upon its head. He relentlessly pounds and destroys the monster until nothing but blood and bone remains above its shoulders and the body is very still.

He looks over and sees Turana, shrunk to normal size, laying on the ground. He leaps off the body and goes to her, gently touching her side. "Turana?"

She opens her eyes and looks up at him. She is badly hurt; her fur is matted with blood. She tries to form words but is having difficulty doing so. "Shh," Kaito says, gently stroking her neck, careful to avoid her wounds. "I've got you."

Kaito looks up and sees that the tormentor escaped over the wall, and that the other one was brought down by the guards inside. Regardless, Turana needs help. He tries to lift her but finds her lion-like form to be rather heavy, especially with the wings.

She struggles to stand and he supports her as best he can as they make their way into the fortress.

Once inside, Kaito searches for a good place to lay her down where she will be safe. Unfortunately, Shao Kahn's fortress doesn't have much in the way of furnishing. Helping her up the stairs, he finds a large door he hasn't gone through before and opens it, finding the Emperor's bedchamber.

The massive, sprawling bed should do. Kaito whistles; it looks like it was made for someone at least twice as big as Shao Kahn was.

He helps her up onto the bed and she lays down. "I'll come back with help," Kaito tells her.

She nods and closes her eyes, trying to rest. Kaito leaves and closes the door behind him.

Kaito makes for the throne room and bursts in to find Kitana conferring with Rain and giving orders to a pair of guards. She turns to look at him. "Kaito! I was about to send reinforcements to the arena. Are the tormentors dealt with?"

"Save those reinforcements for the city. One of them got out. But I've got wounded in the Emperor's bed, and I could use some help."

Kitana shares his concern. "I've no healing magic, and our allies who do are few and far away..."

"Not all," a deep voice says. Kaito finds it familiar. All turn to see a tall white-feathered birdman stride into the room from the balcony.

"Asgaarth!" Kitana exclaims, running to embrace her old friend.

"I have missed you as well, little dove. I received your message and brought my people. And you, my friend," he says to Kaito, "it is good to see you well."

Kaito clasps his hand and nods. "I am, but Turana is not."

"Your sphinx. I have some skill in restorative magics; I will help."

Asgaarth notices Rain. He gives Kitana a strange look, but she nods and he seems more at ease. The brief and subtle exchange is not lost in Kaito. Does he know something about the edenian prince?

"Lead the way," he says. "My princess, I will return in a short while." She consents and moves aside to let him leave.

Kaito leads the birdman to the bedchamber and checks on Turana. She is still and not very warm. "Come on Turana... Hang in there..."

Asgaarth kneels alongside her and places a hand on her. "I will need some time." He closes his eyes and focuses. His hand glows with a white aura.

Kaito looks around the Emperor's room. He can spy a number of interesting things.

Kaito approaches the balcony and looks out over the city. A few pillars of smoke rise out but the majority of the fighting seems done. The revolution is nearly over.

Kaito looks a Turana and sees Asgaarth healing her still. Kaito looks around the Emperor's room and finds a spare giant hammer, some kind of orb on a pedestal and shelves lined with books, maps and artifacts. Kaito wouldn't have guessed Shao Kahn was a reader but the collection is impressive. There is also some kind of table with reagents and components for spells and rituals.

Kaito looks at the shelf. It appears to be works from various realms, places long since vanished or conquered, chronicles of ancient worlds and lost civilizations. Perhaps even Edenia and many others but they are all written in ancient languages he cannot understand.

As he looks and spies on the books, Asgaarth finishes his spell and stands. "She will need sleep, but she will not die. Her wounds are closed."

"Thank you, Asgaarth." Kaito approaches him. "How are things in the sothwest since I left?"

"Yanake and her people have held strong. The lack of leadership for our enemies has left them disorganized and scattered. They will not be trifled by them."

Kaito listens carefully. "I noticed you had some concern about Rain... What do you know about him?"

"He is shiftless," Asgaarth replies, "and not just because he has power over water. He changes his loyalties far too quickly."

"I figured as much. What's his end game?"

"Power. But there is more... He and Kitana have a complicated past. They were once betrothed."

"Oh..." Kaito thinks for a moment. "Do you think he is only trying to get ahold of her throne? Possibly through marriage?"

"It seems likely. I should return to her side."

Turana shifts in her sleep.

That really depends on how Damashii wants to go with it. We could still get to know her, and arguably we could convince her to try to work towatd a different path without losing evil or crazy, or both. After all, evil lunatics are people too, and our bffs are indirectly a product of evil sorcerers or just don't think much like a human at all.

Kaito stands and walks towards the door, giving Turana another look and chuckling a little at how small she seems compared to the bed. Just as he is about to shut the doors, she lifts her head.

"K... Kaito?"

He stops. "I'm here. Is they're anything you need?"

Still very tired, she raises makes a motion to indicate him to come closer and sit on the bed next to her. Kaito does this and she lays the paw on his leg, hugging it slightly.

"That's all I need..." She smiles as she drifts off to sleep.

Kaito smiles and lays his head against the headboard. Hell, he could use a nap too. He brushes Turana's dark hair absent-mindedly as he drifts off to sleep as well.

Going to call it there. Thread has only got a couple dozen posts left before it stops getting bumped and my work starts in an hour.
