Until a few short weeks ago, your life was relatively normal. You went to school, hung out with friends, and just did your thing. You never expected to get shot, or to die, or to come back from the dead after talking to some Spirit woman, or to start working for dead people, or to have your friend get kidnapped by a demon.

And you certainly never expected to be getting chewed out by centuries old baby who signs your paychecks.

Life's funny sometimes.

"So, rather than looking for a shred of evidence, a single clue, or anything solid that could help us, you listened to a voice in your head, recruited a demon for help, and BURNT DOWN A FARM?!"

Koenma hovers in front of you, steam practically shooting from his ears, veins throbbing in his head, and body shaking with absolute rage.

You didn't really think Koenma could ever be intimidating, but he's making a pretty good attempt here.

"What's the matter with you?!" he snaps. "Did you use your brain at all, here?!"

"I wouldn't have been able to deal with the Cultivated Humans without help," you protest.

"Then you should have had Kaya contact Spirit World for backup!" Koenma retorts. "And if your solution was to burn the farm down, I'm sure you could have found a match or a lighter on your own without getting another demon involved!"

Koenma turns away from you and floats back to his desk, standing on top of it and staring at the wall in front of him.

"This voice you heard troubles me," he admits. "There are a number of demons and apparitions with telepathy out there, but for one to identify you as a Detective, know your mission, and provide you with information to recruit a demon and the supposed identity of the one behind this trouble...it seems suspicious to me."

Koenma turns around. "I suggest you act very carefully, especially if what the voice said turns out to be true."

"Why are you so against me recruiting Kasai?" you ask Koenma.

"Because most demons aren't exactly fans of Spirit World," Koenma answers, hopping off of his desk and into his chair. "Not to mention the fact that Kasai is the kind of demon who loves causing pain and suffering, not really someone I'd want my detective associated with."

He opens his drawer and retrieves a folder, with he then proceeds to throw onto his desk. Leaning forward, he opens it up and gives it a quick look over.

"And, she has a record," Koenma explains. "Turns out little miss firebug is older than I am, and caused quite a bit of trouble for the Native Americans centuries ago, terrorizing villages and helping chiefs commit terrible acts of violence."

Koenma slams the folder shut. "She's been off the grid for a while, but now you're giving her an opportunity to cause more destruction, unacceptable!"

You say nothing, simply turning away from Koenma and storming out the door. The second you step through the doorway, your eyes snap open, and you sit up in your bed in the world of the living.

It takes only a moment for you to realize that you aren't alone in your room. A figure stands in the corner, silently observing you. After taking a few seconds for your eyes to adjust to the dark, you're able to see that the intruder is a woman in a red cloak. She knows you're awake, of course, but she remains where she is, and stays silent.

You wonder if she knows anything about the conversation you just had with your employer, then dismiss that suspicion, figuring that there's really no way for her to know.

"What are you doing here?" you ask Kasai, breaking the silence hanging over your bedroom.

"You told me that you wished to learn how to use my powers," she answers, taking a step forward. "I came here to teach you."

You look at your clock, seeing that it's only two in the morning. She broke into your apartment in the middle of the night in order to teach you fire techniques at two in the morning. You aren't really sure how to take that.

"Are you ready to begin your training?" she asks calmly. "It would be best to conduct your earlier lessons in the dark. There are less people around to watch or distract you, and you'll be able to see your work much better at night."

Before giving an answer, you decide that it's best that you tell Kasai about the meeting you just had with Koenma. So, you do exactly that.

Kasai listens quietly as you explain everything to her, and remains quiet for several seconds after you finish, processing the information she has just been given.

"Well then, does that mean you aren't interested in learning from me?" she asks.

"No, I still want to learn from you," you assure her.

Kasai nods. "Alright, then. I will be waiting outside."

With that, she glides silently through your bedroom door, vanishing from sight. Getting up, you throw on some clothes and head outside, finding her waiting less than a block from your apartment building. Once you reach her, she turns and leads you away from the building, taking you most of the way across town until you find yourself in a large, empty parking lot.

"This spot should work for now," Kasai assures you, glancing around. "Now, before we begin, I will warn you again that there are serious consequences for failure when dealing with these kinds of powers. I believe you call it "spontaneous human combustion"? In many cases, the victims were humans attempting to master fire and failing severely."

Kasai pulls down her hood, and you think you can see tiny flames dancing in her dark eyes as she stares at you seriously. "Are you certain you want to attempt this?"

"Yes," you answer.

Kasai gives you a small smile and a tiny nod. "Alright then, let's begin."

You start with some very basic things. Kasai attempts to explain where and how you draw the power of fire from.

"Every living thing has a sort of "flame" inside of them," she explains. "You need to learn to nurture yours, and draw power from it."

Kasia places her hands upon your chest, and you feel a warmth spread throughout your body. You feel a bit of sweat dripping from your head as your entire body temperature seems to go up. Then, you feel something deep inside of you, like a second heartbeat. It seems small, fragile, yet with the potential to spread and grow.

Kasai takes a step back. "Now, try to conjure a flame in your hand.

She turns her right palm upward, and a flame bursts into being above it, flickering before her face in the darkness as she watches you intently.

You focus on that second heartbeat, the source of the warmth in your body, and attempt to take some of that warmth and release it from your hand. You feel your palm growing warmer, soon feeling like it's burning. Several minutes pass, but no flame appears.

Kasai doesn't seem disappointed, however. Actually, she looks pleased.

"Not bad," she tells you with a smile. "You're on the right track. With some practice, you may actually get the hang of this."

Quickly thanking her, you keep trying to create a flame. Your hand is in serious pain at this point, and you can actually see it starting to blister. The pain nearly becomes unbearable, and you are just about to stop when you get an idea.

You continue attempting to draw power from the flame inside of you, and also channel your Spirit Energy into the mix. The pain in your hand begins to subside, and a tiny flame appears above your palm, flickering brightly in the darkness before your very eyes.

Kasai gives an approving nod. "Excellent. You're a fast learner. Now, keep the flame going for the next hour. It will be a challenge, but it's good for an early bit of training."

For the next hour, you do exactly what Kasai told you to. Under her watchful eye, you keep the flame going. By the time an hour passes, you're drenched in sweat, and completely exhausted. You slump back and lie on the ground, staring up at the starry sky.

Kasai walks into your field of vision, staring down at you.

"Excellent work," she praises. "I honestly expected you to burst into flames tonight, but you've proven that you're full of surprises. That's all for tonight."

I wouldn't do anything more complex than what we did tonight, but, over time, you can try maintaining the flame for longer. Next time, I may teach you some basic combat."

Kasai bids you farewell and vanishes into the night sky. You pick yourself off the ground and begin walking home soon after. You're ready to collapse by the time you get back to your room, and intend to fall into bed and sleep for as long as you can.

As you stumble towards your bed, the lights in your room flicker on.

You stop in your tracks and turn around, finding Kaya leaning against the wall next to the light switch, a mixture of anger and concern on her face as she looks at you.

You think you see the faintest trace of a smile appear on Kaya's face for about half a second after you tell your joke, but you might just be trying to make yourself feel better. You're finding that you don't like seeing Kaya sad.

"It won't be that simple," Kaya tells you in a sad tone. "Nobody from Spirit World will be able to inform you of what's going on, and they really don't like interference up there. If they think you're getting in the way, they might even send people after you."

Kaya looks down. "Look, I-I won't tell Koenma what you did, but I'm pretty sure he's going to find out on his own. When he does, he's going to be furious. You're probably going to be fired."

She looks back up, and you're sure you can see tears in her eyes now. "I'm sorry, but there's nothing I can do."

>>41293064
Hit the nail right on the head. Kasai helped us deal with the Cultavated Humans, even when we only had week to face a strong demon, Koenma really didn't do anything to help us get stronger. Kaya just helped us train. Besides, we've established we aren't exactly one to follow rules.
>>
>>41293001
>A. Tell her it's okay, and she was a great assistant
>C. Give her a hug
>D. Dialogue writein
"So whats the deal with Koenma and firing the previous spirit detective"
Might as well find out while we can
>>
>>41293040
"It's okay," you assure her. "And you were a great assistant."

This time, Kaya does smile, however briefly, and you step forward, giving her a hug. The two of you stay like that for a while, before Kaya tells you that she needs to leave.

"Goodbye," she says tearfully. "Thank you, for everything."

Kaya turns and leaves quietly, and you climb into bed, wondering if you'll be getting any restful sleep tonight.

>To be continued

That's it for tonight everyone. Next update will either be this weekend or next week. In the meantime, follow me @qmdralo for updates and schedule changes, and if you have any questions when I'm not running, go to ask.fm/qmdralo.

I'll answer questions here for a while.
>>
>>41293310
Did we just become Spirit Batman?
>>
>>41293335
Probably more like spirit Scarlet Spider
>>
>>41293335
Depends how Koenma takes the news.
>>
>>41293361
is he really set in his ways or can he see the potential that being trained in fire magic shit has for us?
>>
>>41293361
So are we going to end up on the spirit world hit list?
>>
>>41293397
It's not the training it's the association with psychotic fire demon and disembodied voices part
>>
>>41293397
Koenma's right though. His set in ways are correct.
>>
>>41293361
Now that kaya's gone you can answer this right? Was she a sadist?
>>
>>41293433
he must have dealt with worst things before and how long would it take him to get another hitman ready when he fires us.
>>
>>41293434
Not training his Spirit Detective to handle threats his job causes is correct?
>>
>>41293397
He's gonna be furious that you disobeyed his orders like that. Kaya's right, you're probably getting fired.

>>41293431
Depends on your actions.

>>41293433
Pretty much this. And psychotic might not be the right word for Kasai. Destruction's just in her nature, and she happens to like what she does.

>>41293449
>Gone

Making a loooot of assumptions right now.
>>
>>41293468
>>41293478
redirecting question to proper person.
>>
>>41293475
more along the lines of >>41293433
If we needed more training we shoulda asked him, not run to the nearest demon who offered.
>>
>>41293468
He's not going to get a hitman the second he fires you. But, if you interfere with Spirit World operations, Spirit World may send agents to make you stop.

>>41293531
To be fair, she didn't offer, you asked her.
>>
>>41293554
alright then how long will it take for him to get another detective up and running?
>>
>>41293554
Will he rehire Urameshi to rek us?
>>
>>41293602
Could take a few days, weeks, months, hell, even years, depends on the situation.

>>41293603
Even if he tried, Yusuke would probably tell Koenma to fuck off in this case.
>>
>>41293634
so he is really putting his balls on the chopping block for his pride right now...not the smartest move right now all things considered.
>>
>>41293634
What if he goes for Kuwabara? A poor university student, in need of cash...

>>41293648
No, that would be keeping us.
>>
>>41293648
Koenma can get someone if he needs them. And Yusuke is just difficult in general, he and Koenma don't see eye to eye on a whole lot.

>>41293683
"Kill this guy for disobeying orders?" pretty sure that's against his code.
>>
Godammit.
I miss a couple threads and you guys get us fired. I hope this training is worth all the fucking headaches this is gonna bring.
>>
>>41293692
hey SOM how impressed/confused would you be if we somehow kept our job?
>>
>>41293725
I look forward to you meeting your replacement.
>>
>>41293692
Not kill him, just beat him up and tell him to stop obstructing Spirit World employees on legitimate business. Rek doesn't mean kill.
>>
>>41293752
Is he gonna get killed early because he didn't get proper training?

Or is he gonna be better than us because he wasn't a retard and actually asked Kaya and Koenma for proper training?
>>
>>41293683
If he fired Urameshi, Kuwabara might tell him to fuck off too.
>>
>>41293752
So does Kasai hold any loyalty to the mystery voice?
>>
>>41293792
Kuwabara is too poor to tell anyone with money to fuck off. He's like spider man with a dying aunt may.
>>
>>41293789
He's gonna....

Smell ya later!

>>41293751
Amazed/very

>>41293758
Then Kuwabara might be convinced. Then again, he might decide that's really not his thing anymore.

>>41293795
That would be telling. She has heard the voice before, though.

>>41293792
Eh, the firing happened without hard feelings on either side. Yusuke and Koenma are friends, but they still don't always get along.

>>41293816
Genkai left a property to him and his friends, he's fine.
>>
>>41293831
>Smell ya later!
So one step ahead of us always, until he jobs to a boss to show how strong they are?
>>
>>41293831
>Gary Oak is our replacement
>he catches the demons and uses them to fight other demons
I want this so badly.
>>
>>41293831
considering what happened with nappa and Yamcha I think we might have a shot. Anyway our we going into Flames Of Recca territory with the fire magic?
>>
>>41293905
I don't know what that is.

>>41293902
Good, good.

>>41293895
We'll see.
>>
>>41293831
Are we going to go to the demon world sometime soon?
>>
>>41293831
So did you expect people to immediately tell Koenma to fuck off on the promise of fire magic?

I know I sure didnt.

Fuckers
>>
>>41293935
Keep crying, I'm sure it'll make a difference.
>>
>>41293935
I imagine some thought we could get away with it. Apparently there's a chance we still can? Better be around when he fires us and we might be able to negotiate our way out.
>>
>>41293923
so any ideas for when we get fired?
>>
>>41293929
Probably not.

>>41293935
Nope.

>>41293979
Koenma gonna yell a lot.
>>
>>41293995
so let the baby have his temper tantrum and then tell him we can keep an eye on fire lady and become even more useful to him and show off our new skill. Would that sway him?
>>
>>41293979
Become the equivalent of Batman, so basically training on our own, hitting the books on different spiritual lore and start going to the demon world from time to time to gather intel.
>>
>>41294033
No.
>>
>>41294096
welp then I'm out of ideas.
>>
>>41294096
this is japan technically. We gotta apologize a lot, almost grovel and shit. Just a lot of "I was wrong, I defer to you."
>>
>>41294096
I have an idea that is IC, but probably won't work, but won't post it here so people don't metagame by asking you about it.
>>
>>41294151
You're in America.

>>41294173
Thank you.
>>
>>41294151
I'd rather just get fired.
>>
>>41294329

I'm curious to see what Som could do if the protagonist isn't tied down to Spirit World. Maybe he could expand a bit and try implementing other afterlife-type agencies who could really use a gifted agent.
>>
>>41294308
Koenma is still japanese though. The strategy stands.
>>41294329
yeah me too
>>
>>41294308
>America
So we just say he is interfering with our Constitutional right to bear arms by not letting us learn fire from demon lady, and take him to the Supreme Spirit Court so we can keep our job and learn fire.
>>
>>41294415

SPIRIT AMERICA, FUCK YEAH!
>>
>>41294415
As fun as that sounds, no.

>>41294386
Fair enough
>>
>>41294475
>no
Awww, still going to mention our right to bear (fire)arms as a joke when he tries to chew us out.
>>
>>41294475
This or super tomorrow?
>>
>>41294777
Super, probably

>>41294546
lol
>>
>>41294835
What can we expect to do in the future with our newfound fire?

Are we locked onto this path?,
>>
>>41294907
Burn things
