“-two carriers and a heavy escort group around them, under a heavy cloud deck at medium altitude -”

“-at least six cruisers and two destroyer divisions with flotilla leaders now passing Chichi-Jima-”

“-number Four reporting heavy abyssal air traffic over Iwo Jima-”

Goto on the floor, clutching at his ears, screaming as Kongou rushes across the room as discarded donuts go rolling forgotten across the carpet; phone swinging free on the end of its cord -

- the sun is finally dawning on a new day, and it's already gone straight to hell.

We aren't *that* badly off. We've got a strike spotted, and while I don't fancy tangling with the SAG, we can probably delay action until we can launch off a second strike.

We are that "Carrier Task Force" in the northwest, correct? We should be able to delay things by sailing north.

Have Kongou tend to Goto, we're in some deep shit and need to get our forces in order pronto. No time to have one admiral getting the other admiral back to his senses.

And whatever we do, DO NOT PICK UP THE PHONE. Maybe Goto is just freaking out over something he heard on the other end, but for all we know he's been the victim of some kind of Abyssal juju weapon, and the last fucking thing we need is to let it take out another of our leadership.

I'd target the CVs. Samar showed that a CTF, even at a disadvantage, can really mess with a SAG, but we need to clear out the damn carriers first.

We can probably spot Hornet's bombers after launching CAP, and use them to harass the SAG.

Whatever Goto heard made him break down screaming. It can't be anything good or USEFUL.

So I don't see why we should do so too.

I mean, what are we going to do if it IS an Abyssal and it starts talking to us? Snark back? What good would THAT do, trading verbal barbs, when we can just start getting our shit together instead?

We are NOT in the Japanese position at Midway.

We've got an anti-CTF strike spotted; no funny business trying to unload bombs and reload torpedos for the N'th time, and Hornet's entire fighter force is available for CAP. Ok, so it sounds crazy due to the chaos of all the reports flooding in at once, but assuming I'm parsing what Planefag's written correctly we're not dealing with all that horrendously much. Not sure which of these is what on the map, but what we have is:

At least 6 cruisers & 2 destroyer divisions with flotilla leaders

>Tone's scout #4 reports:

Two to our three. I'm not terribly worried especially with Hornet with Hellcats, they're pretty good planes.

Unless we're dealing with a BWS or something. then we're just fucked anyways.
>>
>>41167345
And with luck, so shall we, as soon as Kaga and Akagi's strikes hit the enemy CTF.

Flank speed north, DDs to make smoke as appropriate, we may be able to stall the enemy long enough to recover the main strike and launch at the enemy SAG. I'm guessing there's a good chance we can at least get Hornet's bombers into the air to deal with the SAG.

>The Nakajima B6N Tenzan (Japanese: 中島 B6N 天山—"Heavenly Mountain", Allied reporting name: "Jill") was the Imperial Japanese Navy's standard carrier-borne torpedo bomber during the final years of World War II and the successor to the B5N "Kate". Due to its protracted development, a shortage of experienced pilots and the United States Navy's achievement of air superiority by the time of its introduction, the B6N was never able to fully demonstrate its combat potential.

>The Yokosuka (横須賀?) D4Y Suisei (彗星 "Comet"?) Navy Carrier Dive bomber was operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy. Its Allied reporting name was "Judy". The D4Y was one of the fastest dive-bombers of the war and only the delays in its development hindered its service while its predecessor, the slower fixed-gear Aichi D3A, remained in service much longer than intended. Despite limited use, the speed and the range of the D4Y was nevertheless valuable, and the type was used with success as reconnaissance aircraft as well as for kamikaze missions.

Hell, the turkeys carried those two.
>>
>>41167346
Likely. In particular, I expect we might be missing info about Iwo Jima (I'm guessing probably more carriers, rather than all those birds being from the ones Chikuma found, especially since the scout would need to be more cautious with so much enemy air power around). Possibly also with the group Chikuma's scout found, since they report heavy cloud cover, which might be obscuring Abyssal ships from view.

But from what we do know, it seems manageable, even with some unknowns in the mix, assuming we play it smart and don't lose our shit.

Also, looking up coordinates for Iwo Jima and Chichijima, I've made sense of the map. Chichijima is almost directly north of Iwo Jima, so that makes it the nearest enemy contact to our CTF. Iwo Jima would be the one further south, while the one off to the east is the Abyssal carrier group reported by Chikuma's plane.

You try to work up spit in your dry mouth to no avail. Picking the force-wide channel, you swallow and speak into your mic. “Destroyers Yuudachi, Shigure, Yukikaze, Hayashimo: you are now Division One. Your senior-most destroyer is Division Leader. Destroyers William D. Porter, Fubuki, Shiranui and Sammy B, you are now Division Two. Shiranui is your division leader. Division Two, hold position as plane guards for now. Division Two, I want you screening fifteen thousand yards ahead of the force – keep your sonars on. Mustin, it's time to start your ASW patrols.”

“Aye, sir.”

With that taken care of, you eyeball the phone. Goto's curled up on the floor, weeping, clutching his head miserably. Kongou's picking him up and pulling his head against her chest, cradling him protectively, a look of sheer miserable terror on her face. Shoukaku is standing in the middle of the room, stunned. Kisaragi is right next to her; clutching her arm like a safety blanket, a take-out bag of food forgotten on the table beside her.

And through it all is that black phone, swinging and swinging on the end of its cord; the dark holes in the receiver drinking in every bit of it.

You don't remember stepping towards the table. You don't remember picking up the phone. You barely recall Shoukaku's sudden abortive shout of panic; her fruitless last-second lunge for your arm as you press the receiver against your ear.

At first, there's static – and then a sharp crackling, like something hard snapping and splintering. An awful gurgle drifts over the open line; a meaty, organic sound that resonates with something living in your brain-stem; making the back of your neck itch with a gut instinct older than the pyramids. And then there's only the static; brief and fitful.

Nuclear weapons are desperation. The amount of environmental damage done to the ocean, and specifically to the island of Iwo Jima, which they may have taken over, is simply not worth it.
Escalating this conflict to the point of nuclear retaliation isn't worth it.
And, the Japanese would react especially badly to the United States nuking their waters.

Shoukaku seizes your arm with desperate strength, but you twist your whole body around, prying it out of her grip. Her dogged grip only throws her hip into the table, but you refuse to yield – she yelps as she loses hold and goes tumbling clear over the obstacle.

You listen to the static. You don't strain to discern the snatches and murmurs of voices that dance at the edge of audibility. You just let it wash over you like the tide crashing against a sea cliff... and wait.

Iwo Jima was a pain in the ass to shell, nearly every battleship in the US Pacific fleet went to town on her and it barely made a dent, she's made of thick volcanic rock that held in the heat of magma, you'd have to nuke it multiple times to be sure it'd work.

Tactical nuclear weapons are a thing. A rather big thing in Russian naval doctrine, since the USSR counted on using supersonic carrier-killing missiles to even up the odds against the USN, and those could have conventional warheads swapped out for nuclear ones. In fact all the evidence is that the Soviets would have gone straight to using nukes had the Cold War ever turned hot.

There is, like, almost no comparison between the early plutonium bombs used at Crossroads and a modern nuclear warhead. The delivery system is infinitely more precise than dropping a big old unaerodynamic bomb out of a specially-rigged B-29. Even a warhead of roughly the same size as one at Hiroshima can be delivered with markedly more accuracy, and nothing is going to survive intact in the overpressure kill-zone of a nuke. "Fallout" is not a concern because there is no dust to blow up, irradiate, and disperse in the atmosphere.

There will be some radioactive particles dispersed, but those are very short-lived. The prevailing winds might see a minor, very incidental, almost statistically unrecognizable increase in the background risk of certain cancers; but frankly, the US, USSR, France, Britain, and China exploded dozens and dozens of far larger and dirtier nuclear weapons in testing over five decades without any serious environmental problems.

Or maybe you could explicitly indicate whether certain choices indicate different personalities/behaviors/emotions. It's really hard to tell sometimes.

Pic related is from Pillars of Eternity. In certain cases, you've presented with dialog options that allow you to define your personality type (these indicators are normally hidden and have to be enabled in game options). Options are: Aggressive, Benevolent, Clever, Cruel, Deceptive, Diplomatic, Honest, Passionate, Rational, Stoic.

Each time you choose one it's added to a total reputation for each personality type. So if you frequently pick an honest choice, that score can sometimes affect how other characters respond to you for better or worse. Same with others.

Well no, Settle specifically doesn't have any nukes. And it is a political decision. One that will be raised and addressed, especially if there is a decisive loss or a very significant population center is under threat. But the political calculus with nuclear weapons is pretty clear; states will escalate rather than accept an existentially-threatening defeat, and states with nuclear weapons can escalate all the way. It would be naive to expect the Japanese would really let their anti-nuclear sentiment get in the way of stopping massive destruction and civilian casualties; since whoever made the call /not/ to use nuclear weapons would certainly have to answer for it as readily as for using them.

Also mind while the US and Japan may be reluctant others are probably less so. Russia has a large stockpile of tactical nuclear weapons, a naval doctrine with a place for them, and strategic planning that incorporates their use to defend Russian territory even from conventional forces. Nor could we count on the Chinese refusing to use nuclear weapons, given their weakness in naval tradition to draw on and huge population densities along their costs. If you had a threat to St. Petersburg or Shanghai that could not reliably be dealt with by conventional means... well, someone would probably try the nukes.

No my question is, why arent they ONLY doing that? Why would anyone want to waste time sailing about at sea when the goal, as far as we have seen, is to kill people? Seriously they port in blow up the undefended fleet/port/major human population center the leave into the whatever-realm they seem to have before they have to fight anything? Why bother engaging the Navies of the world at all? All they really have to do is starve the humans to death and then they win without losing ANY of their shipsluts. Which considering how badly the entire world is dependent upon the food both from and that passes through the ocean would be INCREDIBLY easy.

They CAN'T teleport. I didn't SAY they can teleport. What we have seen suggests that their physical condition seems to change based on what they are currently engaging. From before the battle off the Phillipines:
>Modern air/space reconnaissance doesn't help much, because they just... show up, emerging from the depths when they damn well feel like it, even though their overall movement speed seems as limited as an actual ship.
And then as they closed with our girls:
>The spray kicked up by their muzzle-blasts wafts over and around the nothing cutting through the heavy swells fifty feet ahead of the diminutive black-clad humanoid forms; the ghostly outline of the warships they once were roughly matching the hazy outlines from the U2's infared sensor; dark, cold voids cutting through the warm tropical waters, their decks lit by the tremendous thunder of their primary batteries.

Have you not paid attention to ANYTHING that's being written?

Like how missiles are super fucking expensive and they already don't have enough, how they have a hard time tracking close range Abyssal targets?
>>
>>41169041
>Seriously they port in blow up the undefended fleet/port/major human population center the leave into the whatever-realm they seem to have before they have to fight anything?
You can only do that so many times before there's no undefended places left because the militaries wise up and fortify them, or the population evacuates. Hitting shipping is easier after that point.
>>
>>41169038
Yeah that doesn't work so well with quests where people tend to bandwagon.

If Planefag thinks people aren't clear about what they choose he can clarify. There are better ways to make a quest difficult than that.

Jesus christ why don't you read the quest.
We don't know why, but they have the ability to pop up from nowhere and yet don't exploit it to its fullest extent, presumably due to limitations we are not aware of.
In addition, Abyssals and shipgirls are unusually difficult to track and target, because they have a tendency to fade out from radar and other non-optical surveillance devices. Some preliminary steps have been done to mitigate the problem at engagement ranges, but global tracking is still off the table.

It starts easily enough; a low, bitter chuckle, but it feels *right,* like rolling round rocks downhill, somehow, and it picks up a velocity all its own, a cascade of cold, mocking laughter that flows out of you and oozes into the phone. You laugh, and laugh, and laugh, and when it ceases it grinds to a natural , slow halt, finishing its run with a nice long “aaaaaaah.”

You shake your head slightly, and marvel that it feels so damn *heavy.*

“How can you not understand?” you ask wearily. “How can you, of all *things,* not understand what they *are* to us?”

The other end of the line is literally as silent as the grave.

“Symbols of our nations. Shields for our civilians. Graves for our heroes.”

Silence.

“We have them back,” you whisper. “By the grace of God, we have them back among us once more. And we'll be damned if we let them go again. You have *no* idea what you're fucking with.”

You fling the receiver at the cradle so hard that the phone nearly tips off the table. You look back up at the map screen.

“Mustin.”

“Sir?”

“Spin up a Tomahawk and mail it to the JAXA station on Iwo Jima. By the way, the island is now hostile.”

“A-ye aye, sir,” the skipper replies, surprised, and less than a minute later you watch a missile rising on a plume from Mustin's forward VLS from several go-pro feeds.

“Settle?” she asks. “Is he going to be all right? He's going to be all right, won't he?”

“He'll live,” you tell her. “But... don't let him go.”

Kongou shakes her head so hard her hair whips around, denying even the possibility of it. You look back at the map on-screen – a hostile carrier battle group to the south-west, a hostile airbase – hell, THREE hostile airbases, counting the two abandoned ones from the War, to the south, and a powerful surface task-force very close at hand and dashing for your throat at flank speed.

And with Goto down, all the hard choices are up to you.

GOOD QUESTION. Your problem here is, you're up against a land base. One with long runways. Runways long enough to land B-29s, back in the day. So go look up the operational range of a P-38 or a P-47 with drop-tanks, then cry a bit.

GUYS. Our missiles have been mentioned to have trouble tracking and locking small targets like abyssals, not to mention their rubbish magical ecm capabilities.

Our missiles are likely best used to best effect on the static targets of the base, knock the airfields out of commission and we can save ourselves the trouble of having to deal with the fighters from those bases.
>>
>>41169395
The goal is NOT to take out the enemy forces right now. It's to extract our forces; and for that, might as well take the cheap shot, crater the runways, and eliminate a substantial fraction of the enemy's aviation assets.

The Island has 3 Airfields that can launch bigger things than a carrier can. Kaga and Akagi can deal with the carriers and surface ships.

Not necessarily. When they're gunning for enemy bombers lugging ords or a torpedo, with a low fuel load and no ords themselves, they're pretty sturdy. And fighters chasing often got blown out of the sky for their trouble; fail to respect those tail guns and you'll regret it. That, and their sheer numbers will help make the airspace highly unwelcoming for enemies.

Seriously the islands just as nasty as the carrier group but it cant dodge, throw all the cruise missles at it. Also while it may have abyssal magical bullshit it is also a series of AIRFIELDS

Our AA defense is the weakest. If we can take out their carriers it mitigates one of our biggest weaknesses. Then we keep the carriers at a standoff from the enemy surface group and pummel it. There isn't much our airgroups are going to be able to do against those land airfields, and we don't know the AA compliment of the enemy surface group. Smash their carriers. They lose strike, and CAP capability at once.

Tomohawks are going to be best at knocking out the runways, they pack much more explosives than any of the bombs the dive bombers can carry. Subsonic missiles the size of tomohawks might not be the most capable thing to use against the wall of flack does surface fleets are going to put out.

PLANEFAG, how far out are the p-8's? can we get them to soften up the surface fleet for our girls?

I suggest we send in Hornet's strike planes with akagi/kaga. We need to eliminate threats as fast as possible, from the way its worded in the options you can get a knockout on an entire force if we do this

Chichin-jima has ONE airfield, with ONE runway, less than a thousand feet long, and as far as we know the Abyssals haven't landed there yet. Slinging missiles at something the enemy hasn't taken and couldn't use even if they did would be a gross waste of ammo.

Hornet's got one of the best CAPs available, and between her Hellcats and the Arleigh Burkes, we should be able to ride out the first attack. Adding SBDs to the CAP would be all but murdering their fairies... but if they clobber the surface-action group and slow them up, we can polish them off once the air-attack has been dealt with.

>MISSILE VOTE:
>[X] That island? Fuck it, and fuck everything ON it. Including the runways. Especially the runways.
Modern missiles have "issues" locking on to Abyssal units... but an island? With airfields whose locations have been pre-plotted for *decades*? We can knock that shit FLAT - and if we do it fast enough, we *should* be able to prevent a second land-based strike. That would leave our carrier decks matched up against theirs, which ain't ideal but it's still a shitload better than things looked before Iwo-Hime decided to play "*I* was phone!"

You could keep ahead of them for hours... if you sail straight north, and guarantee your airstrikes against Iwo or the carriers will run out of fuel just short of the carriers!

As is, you have... about three hours, if you hold still. 90nm distant, enemy closing at 30 knots or so (flank speed,) you do the math~

Late vote is late
[ ] Spot and launch Hornet's dive bombers with Akagi and Kaga's second strike – you need a damn knockout blow.
[ ] That surface group? Fuck it, and fuck everything IN it. Including the cruisers. Especially the cruisers.

Rationale is that we want to focus our offense on one element first. Carriers are biggest threat.
I don't see anything in our task force that can easily deal with SAG. So we can either missile it or try to skirt away, which has it's own risks.
Islands will be launching tons of planes. Hopefully our CAP can deal with it.
>>
>>41169793

Instead, we should be steaming straight for the surface fleet element instead of waiting for the pincers to slam shut.

If a flight of bombers from Hornet can rattle them, we can come in shortly after them and hit them with our CA pairs and their DDs supported with more short distance air strikes.

wait a minute, they're 3 hours away. You said the p-8's would be 400nm away and the cruise speed for them is about 907 km/hr according to wiki. Since they're already waiting on the tarmac, even giving them an extra 30 minutes to get the cruising altitude would put them in the AO with over an hour to spare. Why can't they hit the surface group
>>

Have you read A wizard is you?

Yes he is.
>>

They certainly can hit the surface fleet south of you. It'd take them rather longer to engage the enemy carrier group. Depends on what you want!

>[x] Launch Hornet's dive bombers - as extra CAP

GUYS GUYS!

There you go, we have them soften up the surface group which leaves Hornet able to shore up Akagi and Kaga's strike package. We knock one of the groups out early which allows us to group our assets better when there are only 2 threats.

>[X] Spot and launch Hornet's dive bombers with Akagi and Kaga's second strike – you need a damn knockout blow.
>[X] That island? Fuck it, and fuck everything ON it. Including the runways. Especially the runways.

Trying to use the SBDs as a CAP is a complete waste of their capabilities. And if it prevents us from striking hard enough to eliminate the Abyssal carriers then we'll have failed to blow open the door we need to escape this ambush. That's the critical point, and we need to concentrate resources there, not wasting dive-bombers on a role they are absolutely not suited for.

But yeah, we can still go after the Iwo Jima airfields and, with any luck, crater their runways so we only face one strike out of there. Or even get lucky enough to avoid a strike there altogether, if they haven't pinned down the location of our shipsluts. The missiles are obviously going to work a lot better on immobile land targets than engaging Abyssals on the move with their spooky magic.

Also, hell, given the composition of the Abyssal fleet I don't think they can have that high a speed advantage. Most WWI ships aren't going to break hard above 24 knots, save for the destroyers, and even they'd have trouble sustaining speeds over 30 knots. Taking out the carrier force, and hitting Iwo Jima's runways, then running hard to the north toward air cover from Japan is clearly the best option.

It's even better if we could get a fast surface task force to race south to cover them.

quick question about the lore of this quest Planefag; is every abyssal a unique ship that's "gone evil," or are their various generic models of Abyssals? I ask because I'm curious if we'll get the chance to identify the various carriers we're about to fight.

Realized this may not have been made apparent in story yet, so feel free not to answer if that's the case.

>>[X] That island? Fuck it, and fuck everything ON it. Including the runways. Especially the runways.

Trying to hit all three targets at once probably will spread our forces too thin. We need to focus our resources and make sure we absolutely hammer one of the threats, hinder another severely, and hope we can deal with the third. And we're probably going to be better able to deal with the surface group than the carriers or the island...

I'm half-wondering if the person on the other line in the phone call is actually an Abyssal American carrier. The picture that Planefag used was of Shoukaku and Aircraft Carrier Princess (I think?), and one interpretation I've heard thrown around is that the various Abyssal aircraft carrier princesses represent specific American ships, and Aircraft Carrier Princess is theorized to represent Enteprise...

This is all idle speculation of course. It's more likely that it really is "just" an Abyssal Iwo Jima (so still terrible), but you never know with this quest.

It's rough, it's unpolished, and it's pretty much "DM has no fucking clue about the setting" the Quest, but it's a lot of fun to read.

It starts with you punching out a wyvern while your airship falls out of the sky into a fantasy kitchen sink. What more could ask for?

Also it's where this whole "Keine is planefag's waifu" thing started from.

Too bad he was cucked by Rinnouske, after WizAnon was tragically separated from Keine and assumed lost, and where Rinnouske stepped in to console Keine's broken heart.

I mean, who knows, that could have happened. Probably did too. No updates in years to prove me wrong.

It's also the only operational aircraft carrier that can respond to anything within the Straits of Malacca. Other than the US 7th Pacific fleet, of course.

AND UNLIKE THE RUSTING HULKS THAT EVERY OTHER COUNTRY GOT/BOUGHT (AND SUBSEQUENTLY BECAME ABYSSAL FUCKTOYS), THIS IS A BRAND-SPANKING NEW SKIRAMP CARRIER, A LITERAL FUCKIN' YAMATO OF CARRIERS. (Because apparently maintaining a carrier is EXPENSIVE AS BALLS, WHO KNEW)

World War 2 Thailand had 1 WW1 British-built destroyer (the Phra Ruang), two Thonburi class Japanese-built coastal monitors with 8-inch guns, six older monitors with 6-inch guns, and four Matchanu class coastal submarines.

The Thai have a better ship-girl navy than any Asian nation that isn't Japan or maybe China, and the latter only has coastal ships.

I think the best use for it would be the same reason people dreamed up the idea in WW2. You need to protect the convoy route between north america and europe. But long range patrol aircraft can only do so much, and instead of uboats we're facing surface fleets. You need escort carriers with CAP to have any meaningful effect.

So you build this gigantic aircraft carrier and park it in the middle of the atlantic shipping routes. You could easily fit 8 electromagnetic catapults on it, so it's a beehive full of jets and shipgirls waiting to be poked if the abyssals are dumb enough to attack it or anyone within sortie distance. It's also nearly immune to regular torpedo and cannon hits.

>>41170605
2000ft is more than enough for naval fighters what with the catapults and tripwires. Anything bigger would require some finagling, but depending on the design of the plane it's not impossible by any means. Judging by this picture you could land 4 C-130s on the deck. At the same time even.

At least they have ship-girls or the potential to summon ship-girls. The other Asian countries aren't lucky.

For example: my country, the Philippines. The only ship we actually had in the fight was a 70-foot diesel yacht, and she was donated to the US Coast Guard as a gesture of solidarity.

What are we going to do? Try to summon the US Asiatic Fleet on the off chance we'll get lucky and draw the attention of USS Rizal (the Wickes class named after the Philippine national hero)?

Actually she would take a really really long time to melt if she stayed in the Atlantic. Easily long enough to ship in some replacement parts. Worst come to worst they could tow her up into the Arctic with all the other icebergs.

If reading WitPAE AARs has taught me anything, it's that the best way to deal with an enemy airfield within range of the water is to bombard the shit out of it with battleships.

Also, we need some sort of long-range hydrofoil transport or something for the shipgirls. Or to train them in roping down from helicopters. Anything that lets us deploy and extract them faster is a good idea.
>>
>>41171282
The problem is getting the battleships to the airfield first when it has a full complement of aircraft and two confirmed carrier decks between it and our base
>>
Well from what I can count from votes, the missiles are going to the islands and the dive bombers are most likely going towards being CAP.
>>
>>41171303
From what I can tell from planefags lack of stirring up shadow runs we either fucking aced the choices or we are so fucked it's not even funny.
>>

>>
>>41171303
Holy fucking shit really? I knew anon was stupid but not that stupid.
>>
>>41171417
Sending the missiles towards the islands isn't stupid Anon.

Strategically Iwo Jima is now the largest operational threat in the region and tactically it can throw up more aircraft than the carriers can, the longer it's un harassed the worse it can get.

It's even more dangerous than the Carriers.

The CAP isn't the best choice but I think people are going with it out of caution.
>>
So fap angel has dropped SWQ? Aww
unless I'm misreading and being a derp
>>
>>41171417
>>41171598
It was my understanding while the torpedo bombers aren't very good at dogfighting, they will be supplementing our fighters in CAP rather than going up against abyssal planes on their lonesome. And more planes on guard duty is needed when you have three airfield's worth of planes bearing down on you.
>>
>>41171598

This is why the Allies wanted to seize Iwo Jima (and Chichijima) in WW2.

Personally, I'm hoping for abyssal ground forces.
>>
Hey guys.

This is abyssal iwo jima right? An airfield, a formerly japanese airfield right?

What happens when we crater their airfields?

What happens when they cant recover their first strike wave?

Ka. Mi. ka. Ze.
>>
>>41171644
I didn't vote for the extra CAP but it's not the end of the world. The attackers we are using are dive bombers, the SBD Dauntless, not the torpedo planes.

SBDs have two nose mounted .50cals and a dual .30cal tailgun. That's more forward firepower than some american fighters had for a long time. When not weighed down with bombs they also become pretty nimble. They can't match most fighters for agility but agility is relative. SBDs may not outturn zeroes, but they sure as hell can outturn enemy attacker aircraft like themselves, especially ones loaded up with heavy ordnance for attacking fleets.
