During the Goetic War, you and your husband were glorious dealers of death. You led a dozen charges against demons. You learned how to break their bizarre bodies and predict the movements of their incomprehensible campaign of extermination. You did your part to ensure the survival of not only humanity, but all of the Eight Thinking Races of the Known World. And unlike so many worthy knights, you survived. Few true soldiers are left now. You hope it will be enough to rebuild.

Your husband lost both his arms in his final battle, but you were lucky enough to make a life with him on a plot of land granted to you by the new king. You even stayed together during the Year of Hate, the aftermath of the final spell of demon-sealing that left the eight races temporarily incapable of love. You're glad that even when you couldn't see him as lovable you could still see him as valuable. Now love has returned to the world, and yours is stronger than ever.

In addition to taking over his duties as a knight, you did your duty as a wife and bore him a son, whom you named Lief. Lief is eight years old now, old enough to serve as a page in the court of another knight or lord. Your household is currently flooded with worthless pages and squires from other noble courts, so it would be fitting to return the favor.

The common folk in your domain have come to know you for your tireless work ethic. Proving that you expect no more of the peasantry than you are willing to deliver yourself, you ride from farmstead to farmstead, settling judicial disputes and putting down ruffians, while still finding time to train men-at-arms in the yard every day.

While hearing your people's legal disputes and various complaints, you hear that some woodsmen have sighted a dragon around the borders of your land. If this is true, this would be a breach of the dragons' agreement with the king to stay out of your husband's fiefdom.

You decide to prepare a diplomatic mission. Rather than scouring your woods for dragons, you will ride to the dragon-controlled town of Goldmaw and speak with the dragons who will listen.

Since it is harvest time and you cannot be expected to conscript any peasant levies, you will have to make do with the men-at-arms and terrible layabout squires staying in your keep. More men than that for a diplomatic mission would arouse suspicion anyway.

You explain to your husband that you have to investigate some rumors by taking a very small force to Goldenmaw. When you go to break the news, your husband is in his chambers, half-dressed and kicking at a goblin page boy that he's chasing around the room. Your husband has what looked like a small bald spot on one side of his thick black hair. "You said you could cut hair, you little green shit! You think your whore mother will miss you after what I'm going to do to you? You think she can even tell you apart from all the other imps she's shat out?"
"Hey, I cut it, didn't I? It's not my fault you can't explain how short you want it!" Goblins are known for being outspoken even when other races would hold their tongues to save their necks.

You don't have time for this. "Just don't murder the fool thing. I'm sure he's only here because his whore mother is someone important. I'll be back soon."

Your husband smiles at you. "I wasn't going to murder him, Carine, just... tenderize him a little."

You pick your seven best men-at-arms and make sure that Lucky, your destrier, is ready to ride out tomorrow. Now you need squires to carry your gear and fight by your side if things get violent. You haven't bothered to learn much about any of them, and you're only begrudgingly taking any of them at all because you're supposed to be training them in knightly pursuits. You figure that two squires should be plenty. But which ones?

>You can use your three points of patience to learn details about three of the squires in your household. Your household contains seven human squires, one dwarven squire, three halfling squires, two elven squires, four goblin squires, and one kobold squire.

You hear that dwarves are not completely terrible at fighting, and bringing a kobold with you might be useful. You find the dwarf playing chess with one of the human squires and the kobold hiding in a corner of the guest hall gnawing on a soup bone. You grab them by the collars and bring them to your study.

>Your patience is at 1/3

"Now, what are your names?" you ask them.

"I've told you a thousand times," says the dwarf, "It's Higgenbotham of Clan Hardknuckle! You know, it's completely unfair that I'm being overlooked in this rout of poltroons and kobolds! By right I should be an ax-thane already. I hope you're here to correct that."
"Mmph, Gurf's name is Gurf, Whose Mama Ate Deer!" says the kobold, either ignoring or failing to notice Higgenbotham's insult. "Whatever it was, Gurf didn't do it!"

"What experience do you both have? Languages, weapon training, anything else you might happen to know how to do already."

Higgenbotham seethes at you and Gurf in equal measure. "Guhh. You really think my skills are just as much in question as this simpering rat-dog? I bore the shield of Grudvik the Unbreakable in the Battle of Open Graves, I battle I believe you were in. I've been training with the shortaxe and the hammer and tongs since I was weaned. I'm fluent in Common and the three secret languages. My father told you all this when this apprenticeship was arranged. What more do I have to prove? Get me out of here."

Gurf realizes that you're looking at him and drops the soup bone with a yelp. "Eep! I, er, Gurf can... Gurf has an axe somewhere. Gurf can lift it, even. Gurf catches rats to eat and sometimes finds good garbage. Gurf won't be a bother, Gurf promises."

"And how much do you know about dragons, Gurf?"

Gurf blushes. "Is there some dragons? Ohh, dragons is the most good. Gurf wanted to go to a dragon, but dragons says they don't need so many kobolds and just want shinies, an' Gurf wasn't good enough. Gurf would be nice to a dragon. Won't milady tell a dragon, please?"

Yo think of anything else you could ask them. "And how many angry goblin laborers could you take in a fight? Just an estimate."

Higgenbotham folds his arms. "Alone? Three at once, and that's on a bad day."

Gurf looks at Higgenbotham, then back at you. "Uh... four?" He's clearly lying.

As you expected, one is petulant, the other is pathetic, and both are thoroughly obnoxious. But you doubt you'll do any better if you waste any more time searching. "All right, you'll do. Have yourselves cleaned up and ready to ride out at first light."

Gurf makes a pained noise, and Higgenbotham starts objecting to being put into the same party as Gurf. You cut them both off with a raised voice. "Dismissed. Get out of my study."

After supper that evening, you join your husband in his chambers. A different page has done his best to fix the landed knight's hair. It looks basically presentable. He leans against you and lets you embrace him. "I had that goblin held down and kicked him within an inch of his life, probably."
"He won't forget that, dear."
"I hope not! I... maybe I was too hard on him. I think I was a little more patient before... you know. It's little things like a shitty barber that make me feel useless all over again. I can't take care of myself, or fight with you, or... dammit, I can't even hold you anymore."

This is hands down one of the stupidest things you've gotten mad about

You smirk a little. It feels a little cruel, but this time you think he deserves it. "You know, you can be confident without having to strongarm everyone."
"You!... You're lucky I can't slap you!"
"Aww, you're always getting up in arms about petty things."
"You're making me mad on purpose. I could bite you."
"Brighten up. There's still one thing you can give me a hand with."

>ARM JOKE COUNTER: 3

Though it's not enough to lift his dark mood, you let your husband make angry love to you. You have to admit, he's still a great lover. He has preserved most of his muscle power since his days of cleaving demons in half, and he's not afraid to use it. He accidentally rolls off of the bed, as he does sometimes when he goes too hard, and you join him on the floor.

The next morning Gurf and Higgenbotham are ready with Lucky and you men-at-arms in the yard. Gurf carries a crude stone axe and has dark circles under his eyes, and he looks even more a wreck than before. "Gurf is ready! Gurf didn't sleep all night so Gurf wouldn't sleep in..."

You lead your party off to the west, toward the Forest Road. You're hoping to run into just enough trouble to see your squires in action. You keep an eye on Gurf to make sure he doesn't pass out.

Sure enough, where the road winds near the edge of the woods, you see a group of human poachers trying to get away with a doe they've killed.

Tell the squire to lead the charge, and that their mission is to capture the men alive.

The poachers drop their ill-gotten gains and flee as they try to nock arrows. You predict that they will post little danger.

"Take them alive! They will face their lord's justice." You stay in the back and watch your men in action.

The men-at-arms intentionally shoot wide with slings and crossbows to try to get them to take cover. Higgenbotham runs ahead, catches a poacher's arrow on his shield, and starts hacking apart the poachers he can catch up with, in blatant defiance of your orders.

You look around for Gurf and realize that he's right behind you, still dragging your armor around.

"Gurf, you were supposed to go and fight. I won't be putting my armor on for this."

"Sorry, milady. Gurf didn't hear..." Gurf is almost certainly lying, as he's never been more than a few paces behind you the whole time.

When your men rejoin you after the battle, all the poachers are dead and both of your squires are proud of themselves despite having blatantly disobeyed your orders. On the bright side, there is fresh venison to eat. You make camp on the far side of the road.

>You won't spend supplies to feed your troops tonight. Gurf is self-sufficient anyway and spends the evening stealing scraps and chewing on various grasses and acorns.
>You have three points of patience to spend disciplining your squires.

Now comes the hardest part of your mission - beating some sense into your squires.

You approach Higgenbotham first, whom you find polishing his short-handled battleaxe by the light of the campfire. You smack the weapon out of his hands and grab him by the collar. "I said keep them alive. You disobeyed me."
"But-"
You smack him right in his stupidly large dwarven nose. "But nothing. You're here to learn from me."
"I already know-"
you slap him harder, this time leaving a welt on his cheek. "How to fight? I don't care. What you don't know is how to obey. You'll learn that if it kills you. And next time it just might kill you." You leave him grumbling to himself.

You spend significantly more time abusing the sleep-deprived Gurf for failing to join the battle. Since he pretended not to hear you, you twist his ears and make him repeatedly promise to listen next time. Then you carry him by the neck to each other person in the party to explain what he did and why it was bad, eight times in total. When he reaches Higgenbotham, the dwarf spits in the kobold's face. After that the kobold scampers off whimpering and goes to curl up and hide under Lucky's saddle blanket. You think you made some progress.

The next day you get back to the road to Goldenmaw. Gurf tries to avoid your wrath, occasionally going off to one side or the other to forage. Higgenbotham keeps challenging the men-at-arms to spar with him.

>Let them fight

Ok, I get that a lot of the time quest choices all offer different things with different drawbacks, and picking them is more a route thing than a win/lose thing. This is not one of those choices. Encouraging this behavior is the lose choice. You are picking the objectively worse choice here.
>>
>>41170266
>Forbid Higgenbotham from bothering your men

He needs to learn the concept of order.
>>
>>41170266
"He wants to fight someone, huh? All right, let's make this interesting. If someone humors the dwarf and spars with him, winner gets the wine I've been saving."

That makes more than half of the men-at-arms willing to fight. They draw lots, and the winner squares off against Higgenbotham, both contenders armed with makeshift cudgels and stripped to the waist. After this, it should be a quiet two or three days until you arrive in dragon territory.

>They're pretty evenly matched, so just roll a d100. Odd number=Higgenbotham wins, even number=he loses.

does it matter? what anu did works just as well, better, in fact, since no chance of tie
>>
>>41170433
>objectively worse

Says who?

You can't expect them to try their hardest unless there is something on the line. Win or lose, maybe they will learn something. Leveling up is a thing, and a quick tournament is more fun than a "Stop having fun" moment.

Something horrible could happen later I guess, but then that could be fun too.

>>41170509
>focus on Gurf

The dwarf seems plenty capable already. The kobold needs to pull their own weight somehow.
>>
>>41170580
The dwarf has MAJOR discipline issues
You don't want someone to disobey your orders during a fight, That's how everything crumbles
>>
>>41170580
>Leveling up is a thing,
citation needed
from Anu's description this didn't seem that high fantasy to me

And read the quest. Dorf is already crazy skilled at combat, to the point that he thinks he should be a knight already. His problem is discipline. How do you think he's gonna get more of that. By you indulging his desire to show off his skills? If he wins it's awful, but even if he loses we encouraged the behavior, he'll just work on his fighting instead of his obedience. It does nothing for us and is literally taking steps backward from the starting point.
>>
>>41170608
Well if he got his ass whoped during the fight that could teach him a lesson. And if he wins he could get more combat experience.

Not really objectively worse.
>>
>>41170671

>Squires work like this: http://pastebin.com/mKhYn3TV

It's in the thread.
>>
>>41170678
If he wins he's just going to get a bloated head, So yes objectively worse
>>
>>41170704
A positive effect with a negative effect does not equal objectively worse anon.
>>
>>41170718
For teaching discipline? It's the worst option.
>>
>>41170699
Ok. How do we know winning sparring matches levels them up? It could just be us putting patience into them.
>>
>>41170747
Yes, but it is still not the objectively worse decision.

And even then there was the possibility of him getting his ass kicked, giving an opportunity to teach him some discipline.

>>41170768
Speculation, the same way you assume nothing can be gained from a sparring session.
>>
>>41170787

Higgenbotham makes the man-at-arms yield. You award him the wineskin you promised, and he shows it off to the other men before downing it all in one go and passing out.

Your party passes through abandoned farmsteads and lands still blighted and scarred by the Goetic War. The next proper settlement will be Goldenmaw, the town where the dragons collect and process the tribute they receive in exchange for their cooperation with the other races. You focus each evening on disciplining Gurf. Sometimes he's committed some minor annoyance for which he needs to be flogged or shamed before the men, but just as often you realize that he's basically behaved himself. He's kept your armor clean, manages to wake up on time, and never fails to call you "milady." Though it goes against your natural urge to flog him, after a day of good behavior you reward him with a clean blanket that has not been on a horse all day. The next day he actually asks permission to go out foraging, and that night he curls up right next to your tent with his new blanket.

>Gurf has reached level 2. He is now obedient.

The next day you reach Goldenmaw. You see the occasional dragon flying overhead, but the folk on the ground are almost all kobold tradesmen and tax collectors. Some kobolds in red capes with silver badges ask you what your business is and if you've paid the toll yet.

>Pay them and ask to see someone in charge
>Pay them and openly ask about any dragons that might have come on your land
>Lie and say you've already paid them.
>>
>>41170822
Good to know.

By the way, 'Obedient' is a dwarf trait.
>>
>>41170866
He doesn't get it until level 4, and I'm betting he levels up from how we handle him, not combat.
>>
>>41170859
>>Pay them and ask to see someone in charge

You pay them some silver coins. "I'm the lady Carine of Green Furrows. I'm here on a diplomatic mission. I'd like to see someone in charge."

They play with the coins you gave them and seem a little distracted. "Ooh, yes. The lord mayor! You want to see the lord mayor! A good worthy dragon he is. Star-watcher, money-counter he is. Fair he is. Only the bad ones he eats."

The lord mayor's residence is carved into a rocky hill overlooking the town. You've heard that kobolds are naturally servile to dragons, and you wonder how that might affect Gurf. You clean yourself up, have Gurf help you change into your armor, and prepare for an audience with the lord mayor.

You bring both squires in with you, figuring that it may make you look more impressive. One must have as much bearing as one can manage when dealing with a dragon. Their stature can make even a proud knight feel a little like a kobold.

A tunnel winds into a great round chamber lit by fissures in the rock high above you. A great dragon, easily twenty feet tall, slinks in and surveys your party. Gurf clings to your leg.

"The lady Carine, of a proud people, a people who survive with no power but honor, who keep their agreements and pay what they owe," the dragon says. "Why have you come?"

You think of the best words for this. "Since our peoples are friends now, I thought I would give you tidings instead of just goods. I was hoping to receive some news from you in return. I've heard little about your realm except for wild rumors from frontier folk, and I need to know for sure how true they-"

Higgenbotham steps forward. "Hey! Get your dragons off our land!"

Everyone falls silent for a dreadful moment.
