>Hello and welcome to FE Quest! This is, of course, a quest hoping to thematically feel like Fire Emblem. Occasionally pictures when ol’ Grandflaw can be assed!

>It takes place in its own world, the continent of Teege, opening up in the nation of Neir.

>Soon, you will be thrust into the position of someone who fights for Lord Garth of Neir.

>There will be TWO questmasters for this quest! Can you believe it? How exciting! They would be Grandflaw, the man who’s name is on this post, and Octoling!

>Now for some basic rulesy shit!

>Character death! This is Fire Emblem, it happens (we’re not casuals here), but we won’t just kill off characters for no reason! Make good decisions, and maybe no one has to die!

>Write-ins are encouraged! Sculpt the character you want to play as, just don’t get too salty if it doesn’t pan out that way. These things never play out as initially expected. Not even for us.

>Our first posts will outline the options for the character’s backstory, and from there the classes that can be selected for each history.

>Voting periods will last an average of ten minutes after each update from myself or Octoling.

>The first decision of this quest will be in the post right after this one.
>>
Like some of the more recent entries in the series, we'll be starting by creating the character we shall control.
First off, the question that can start a quest’s first shitstorm! What’s the player character’s gender? This is actually important for non-characterization reasons, affecting the classes available for certain backgrounds. Don’t worry, there are no wrong answers…at least not this early on.

This anon has a good point, but other than males having Fighter/Brigand and females having Pegasus Knight and . . . I think that's it, actually? Either way, classes definitely shouldn't be misconstrued to where it's "oh you can only be a Wyvern Rider if you're male!" or "oh, you can only play an archer if you're female!" That kind of shit is just dumb and pointless.
>>
>>41160706
Yup
>>
>>41160512
Alright, you are a woman. However, gender alone does not determine one's life's path. In some way, shape, or form, you are at least someone fit to walk onto a battlefield (for the quest's own sake). Who are you, exactly, though?
>A. You are a humble Villager full of unrealized potential, though you know little of warfare now, your capacity for learning and natural talent could do wondrous things with some guidance and experience. (Weak Initially, High potential for growth)
>B. You are a young knight-in-training to defend and serve prince Garrus. you’ve grown significantly as a soldier in the short time you’ve trained, but despite that still have plenty of room to grow. (decent from the start with room to grow. don't expect any surprises)
>C. You are an elderly retainer of King Darsam, a mentor of Prince Garrus, and a veteran of the field, peerless in your prime many years ago. Of course, you are no longer IN your prime. Though your room for growth is nil, you can make an impact in what years you have left, guiding the younger knights to glory. (Very strong initially, with little room to grow)
>D. You’ve lived your short life as a criminal through some means or another, but the life of a thug is not particularly glamorous or easy on the soul, and one can sometimes wonder if what they’re doing is truly right. You want out. (decently powerful starting classes and plenty of room to grow, but you might not be the most popular gal around)

Okay kids, get ready, this one's gonna be a little long.

>A. Your years as a farmhand have left you reasonably confident that you could wave a spear around without poking someone’s eyes out. (Villager)

>B. You are the youngest of three sisters, both of which serve as Pegasus Knights in the royal army at the capital. You stayed home and minded the village's stables, although you did pick up a lot from the two of them in your time, including how to ride a pegasus, and defend your home on one.

>C. You know enough of swordplay to act as a part of the village guard without dying when called upon, though hardly a master of anything in particular. You don’t really have a reason to focus on any strengths in particular, but are also not glaringly weak anywhere. All in all, you are balanced.

>D. You are a humble priest(ess). You cannot fight, but the staff you carry can heal the wounded. Any who take you with you would be glad they did, and perhaps some day you might be compelled to learn more offensive forms of holy magic.

>E. To pass the time in your town, you took up archery as a sport. You’re a crack shot, sure, but your light frame and lack of training might make you a bit fragile, and bows are quite difficult to use at closer ranges.

>F. You are an entertainer, a performer, invigorating to those who bear witness to your song and dance (you are said to be able to give people a second wind with your presence). Of course, you need to dress light and pack lighter to act as you do, so your only options for weaponry are small, easily-hidden within less than a doublet.

Technically this vote also made it in time, but it doesn't change the outcome at all. So, y'know. Anyway the next update will pose a simple question as well as being our first "stuff happens" update!

You are a young woman living in the village of Orsin. It is a town within the Johan region of the Kingdom of Neir. Johan encompasses much of the heart of Neir, up to and including the location of the royal family's castle, the city of Rakche.
It's a fine enough country with well-liked royalty, but your hometown is a bit far away from the capital.
The region is also the home to the fearsome Johalva bandits, and raids are a looming threat to everyone.
You and several other youth in your village are at least semi-competent in some form of combat or another, and swordsmen such as yourself are rather well-liked due to the abundance of axe-using villains in the area.
At the moment, you and a close friend, the son of the current captain of the local guard, are practicing the use of your shared weapon of choice.
>Continued by Grandflaw
>>
>>41161560

"Whoa, watch your foot!" Lambert, the captain's son yells out, pointing towards the ground.

You quickly look down at your feet, trying to see what Lambert was warning you about before you suddenly fall backwards onto the ground, Lambert pointing his weapon towards you.

"Never let your guard down, that's day one." He chuckles, offering a hand. Taking his hand, he helps you up, and you elbow him in the side. He can be kind of a jerk, but he's your jerk. Plus, you don't want to actually hurt him that bad, with the recent bandit attacks having left most of the local guard's veterans out of comission, you two are part of the few the village has left. Well, most were injured. Gorman, the captain before Lambert's father suddenly left the village without any warning, and he was one of the strongest fighters for miles. It definitely made your home significantly weaker, and might even be the cause for the bandit attacks seeming to happen a lot more lately.

"We should probably make our rounds," Lambert suggests, glancing around the village. "I doubt they'd make another move on the village so quickly, but we can never be too careful, y'know?" You nod in agreement, starting towards the Village's entrance before you're stopped by an older gentleman with one arm that's clearly out of comission. "Lambert! Miss... erm... what's your name, exactly?" He asks, Lambert can't help but chuckle at your lack of renown in the village despite having helped defend it recently.

That's a good question though, what IS your name?

You open your mouth to speak, but Lambert, center of attention he always likes to be, answers for you.

"This is Ellen," he says to the injured elder. "She's basically my second wind, almost as good with a sword as me."

You introduce yourself with a terse "hello," perhaps a bit miffed that you were interrupted.

"Training under the captain's own flesh and blood, eh?"

You and Lambert both notice the man's injury, possibly more than he does. Upon further thought, you recognize him as a farmer, but you can't say you know who he is beyond that.

Not beating around the bush, Lambert is quick to ask, "what happened to your arm?"

The farmer's eyes widen, just remembering what he approached the nearest militia members. "I saw a pair of big-looking guys with axes prowling around on my property, and when I shooed 'em off, they did this to me!"

Lambert frowns. "You... wouldn't happen to mean Robert and his quiet friend, would you?"

"Oh, heavens no! Why, they're the reason this is all I've got to show for it! Jay gave the brute a nasty scare with his own axe and they both ran off."

You finally take the chance to pipe in, "you don't think..."

Lambert again interrupts, "yeah, it... sounds like it could be bandits."

Pondering it for only a second, you tell Lambert he should probablly take the Farmer to a healer while you go inform the rest of the local guard.

"Alright, but you know how Natalie can be... I know she doesn't mean it, but she just seems so... cold." Lambert sighs and starts leading the old farmer towards the church before turning to adress you. "Don't do anything reckless and stupid either, I don't need the person closest to my equal getting their arm choped off!" He smiles before continuing towards the church.

You, on the other hand immediately seek out Lambert's father, he is the Captain, after all. When you manage to find him he's being told a similar story by a man with an axe, one you recognize as Robert. He nods at Robert and turns towards you.

"I assume you and my son have heard the news as well?" he asks, looking more serious than you expect of him. In any case, you nod in agreement as Lambert's dad contemplates the situation for a moment. Not having much to contribute strategy-wise at the moment, you glance towards Jay and Robert, the two looking just about the same as always. Jay is stone-faced and not making a noise, while Robert's constantly whispering something to Jay with a wicked grin on his face. Sometimes you wonder how those two can even be friends. You don't think you've ever heard Jay speak, and at the same time you don't think you've ever heard Robert stop speaking.

You're jostled from this train of thought by the Captain clearing his throat and adressing the three of you. "We'll head towards the entrance and try to defend or drive them off. I'm sure Lambert will handle letting the citizens know of the circumstances, and bringing us Natalie for support."

Jay and Robert both nod there heads in agreement, while you speak up with...

"Shouldn't someone help Lambert escort Nat? Certainly your son is good with a sword, captain, but one man can't easily protect someone who can't fight. Er, alone, that is."

Robert scoffs, "and you think you'll be able to even those odds, I take it."

The Captain looks contemplative, then nods. "Ellen actually has a point, Robert. Sort of like yourself and Jay, she and my son work well together on the field. They're able to support each other quite well."

You nod, the Captain understanding the request you would have made without you even needing to outright say it. He's not one to beat around the bush. However, another concern arises.

"Captain, what if they're coming from places other than the entrance? Won't the civilians be in danger?"

"I have at least a couple men placed on most viable entrances to the village. They'll at least no how to yell if trouble is coming, even if they're not as strong as the four of you, or Gorman."

Your worries reasonably assuaged for the moment, the Captain sends you off to the local church, where Lambert went to look for Nat.

Not hesitating, you shove open the door, your Bronze Sword coming out of its sheath in preparation for the worst.

What you find instead is Lambert in the midst of a fist fight with a rather muscular-looking bandit. A Hand Axe, presumably his, is currently embedded in a wall, a portrait of a local deity having collided with the ground. Lambert's own weapon was knocked towards the door at some point, and now rests at your feet.

A relatively tall girl, stone-faced, dark hair in some sort of bun, stands mere inches away from the axe in the wall. This is Natalie, and she doesn't look remotely shocked about barely dodging a rather nasty demise.

This formerly-armed fellow was clearly trying to kill Lambert and Natalie, and he doesn't notice you.

You take the opportunity to strike, stabbing the bandit from behind as Lambert backs away from the blade now sticking out of the individual he was just fighting. The bandit cries out in pain with his last breaths, collapsing as you pull back your sword.

Natalie looks away, uttering "thank you" in a neutral tone, and Lambert's face contorts to one looking very surprised.

He clutches his sword hand and forces a slight smile. "I totally could have handled that, but I appreciate the effort."

Ignoring Lambert's attempts to seem cool, you explain to him and Natalie what the Captain said, and that Nat is expected to be ready for any wounded comers.

You do find yourself increasingly distracted by the way he's hiding his hand as you talk.

"Are you hurt at all?"

"You should see the other guy." Lambert winces after his own weak attempt at humor, ironically enough nearly tripping over said other guy. Through this action, you notice that his hand looks... about as much as one would expect a hand to look after having been struck with a Hand Axe.

You turn to where Nat was standing, only now noticing that she isn't there.

"Distracted, huh? Yeah, she headed into the back to fetch her staff." Lambert points his good hand's thumb towards a room as he retrieves his own sword from the ground.

You inform Lambert that you're going to help Natalie search for her staff before he bleeds out. The room in which she keeps her things is notoriously cluttered. You can't even tell that there's a window from the inside thanks to all the junk covering it.

"Alright, help her look through the hoard. Let's hurry it up, though, we already know that guy isn't the only Johalva in town. I'll just... sit here and try not to die."

You nod and head inside. The storage room is unusually bright, but with many places where stuff is piled over six feet, you can't immediately make out Natalie.

>A. Announce your presence
>B. Just start looking
>C. Take time to examine some of the things stored away
>D. Write-in

"Er, Nat, you need any help in here?"

A moment of silence, the shifting of items around you. Finally, Natalie responds, "I would like help, thank you."

You nod and walk in. You must have misstepped, since an avalanche of things blocks the doorway after you head in.

The sun is shining brilliantly into the room.

You draw your sword and follow the sound of Natalie's voice further back into the storage room, stepping cautiously as to not cause another avalanche of items.

What you see upon reaching her is none too pleasant. With her is a large man wielding an axe, holding her in place with one arm and securely gripping his axe with the other. Noticing you, he moves the blade of the axe closer to Natalie, and smirks.

"One move. S'all you gotta make for this lil' lady to lose 'er head. I don't know how good your friend out there is gonna do either without someone who knows how'ta work a staff." As he speaks, you feel yourself growing more and more tense and unmoving. You weren't trained for this kind of situation, and you certainly haven't dealt with something quite like it before. Natalie looks relatively unphased by this, her expression only looking a little uncomfortable, despite the tears running down her face.

You're going to have to make one of the hardest decisions of your life.

>B. Attack
>C. Cry for help

Unfortunately, the time limit was 10 minutes, which was roughly one minute before that post. So close.

you realize the inherent flaw in giving a 10 minute window for write-ins, yes?
>>

>>41165902
Going by a "whichever reaches x first" limit also has it's own flaws, especially when your playerbase is small like this. Going by "whenever I feel like it's time" carries larger flaws of just seeming kind of bullshit. I figured it seemed like the best way to go about it.

Ah, sorry if there's already an FE Quest in the archives, we'll come up with some kinda name to differentiate 'em when I try to get this archived.

You see no other option.

You lay down your sword, looking Natalie in the eye.

"Smart girl," Natalie's assailant scoffs. He moves his head slightly, uttering "now" to somebody.

You turn around just in time to see another big guy pull you into his grasp.

"There's another'un out there. He's hurt, but he seems a bit crazy. Kept fightin' Redd when he was unarmed and bleedin' out his right hand. Be careful heading around and finishing him."

You and Natalie are carried through an open window-the window, how didn't you notice it was actually serving its purpose for once? That must've been the crash you heard, too.

Your hands are bound together behind your back, as are Nat's. The Johalva confiscate your items. It looks like one of them found Nat's staff.

Regardless, you and Nat are in a very tricky situation.

I meant that the next post is going to be quoting deleted votes
>>
>>41166059
Whether the votes were deleted or not, they were there at the 10-minute mark and when I started making my post. The write-in wasn't even suggested at that time.
>>
>>41166059
Eh, I understand that, but I just feel like using any other system wouldn't work right now. If the playerbase was bigger I'd use the "x amount of votes" thing. We could extend the time limit, if that'd remedy the issue slightly? Not like we're in a rush or anything.

At least these posts explaining it will have it make sense a bit.

You figure there's nothing to lose now, putting your pipes to the test and calling for anyone who might hear. It's startling enough to catch the bandits off-guard and cause Nat's eyes to widen moderately, not that you really have any way of capitalizing on the surprise factor.

Someone else does, however, swinging his sword into one of the bandits, cutting him down in an instant.

"Lambert!" You say, definitely pleased that he didn't just sit around uselessly. Turning your heads towards him, you and Natalie see that he's wielding his blade in his left hand, right hand wrapped in some of his own clothes.

"I'm... not exactly left-handed, but I think someone of my caliber can handle these guys with a bad hand anyway."

"Boss, you were right. This guy IS crazy!"

The apparent leader of the bunch-the one who had apprehended Nat-scowls, before grinning, "yeah, you're right. Bunch of big guys like us couldn't possibly take this guy."

Lambert grins. "Is that a surrender?"

The apparent boss shakes his head. "Stefyn! Time to earn your keep!"

Another swordsman, short-haired, clad in red, and shaking in fear, steps into your field of view. He draws his blade and faces your friend, gulping and steeling himself.

>To be continued

Yeah, we know it was a bit of a mess this time around, but it's the first thread of our first quest. I (and maybe Grandflaw) will be around to answer questions for the next little while.
