Thus it's your best guess as to why Rasim is an oddity.

What spirit would he even be a disciple of? Granted you wouldn't exactly be able to tell, but you don't think El-Amin lies within the realm of any particular spirit. He was a child abandoned in the desert, one of the Clanless. Perhaps he was offered up as a vessel to contain some sort of larval spirit, which has become integrated with his soul or some such?

Regardless of the cause it's an issue you need to get to the bottom of. Thus you let yourself soak for a few minutes more before climbing from the bath and passing once more to the frigidarium. You quickly dry yourself with a touch of Water magic before dressing and heading back upstairs. You briefly debate whether to head down to the smuggler's cove where Zahak makes his nest, but you realize that it's still pretty early. He might not even be awake yet. Thus you instead join your companions for breakfast, resolving to bring your adoptive son his share of the reward for killing those Pidjatan Lions after you eat.

You pat Vaisala, the giant lizard's name, affectionately on the nose before pulling open the gate and letting her out into the entrance to the estate proper.

She eyes your camels for a moment, which start to shift about nervously, but you snap your fingers and she jerks her head towards you. As you walk towards the gate to the street, she follows, and soon you're safely away from your estate without any of your livestock getting killed. Vaisala is exceptionally well behaved, especially considering she's a Sarada. You don't even really need to steer her through the crowds, she almost seems to know where you want to go.

Your ride through the streets is largely peaceful. People seem to know to get out of the way of the man in Grandmaster's robes riding on a giant lizard. You get a little turned around at one point and find yourself passing the city's Grand Temple of Pani. There you see the priest walking in solemn procession, a white bundle carried between them. A funeral? You wonder who died.

As you pass through the merchant district you spot a familiar face sitting in front of a bastani parlor with a giant glass dish of the delicious desert, composed primarily of honey, rose water, milk, egg, and sugar. Seems Nisha is enjoying a little time away from her family's estate. With her is her father, the venerable Emir Yasin El-Hashem. He is enjoying his own, smaller bowl of the sweet desert. With them is another woman who you don't immediately recognize, but presume to be one of his other wives.

As you ride past, Nisha seems to take notice of you. She sits up straighter and stretches one arm high above her head, waving it vigorously back and forth. You hear her speaking excitedly to her father, even from across the road. “It's Mickle! Papa, it's Mickle! Look!”

You suppose there's no harm in getting a little side tracked. You apply pressure with your thighs to turn Vaisala towards the bastani parlor, weaving between two carts to reach the small tie up just outside. You don't actually have any reins for Vaisala, so you just command her to stay. Taking a few hesitant steps back she seems to be complying so you turn to face Nisha and her family.

The Emir seems happy enough to see you, his mouth is covered in yellow syrup from eating his bastani. He's not exactly what you'd call threatening, like this. Nisha is absolutely ecstatic to see you, practically jumping up and down in her seat. Meanwhile the Emir's wife seems... well, you'd describe her as cautiously optimistic. Her face is absolutely covered in scars, like canyons carving across the Earth. Her hair has long since turned white and most of her right ear is missing. You've little idea who she is or what she did for a living, but you get the sense that she's not a woman you want to fuck with.

You slide into an open seat next to Nisha and she promptly climbs into your lap, grabbing hold of your cheeks and twisting your head this way and that while babbling excitedly. “It's been forever and ever since I saw you! My mommy still hasn't come home yet, though. Daddy says she's with Pani right now, but that she'll be coming back soon! He's going to get me a pet puppy! I'm really excited, I think I'll name it Shadiya if it's a girl and Shadi if it's a boy.”

Nisha is distracted from her tirade by her stepmother's gentle hand on her shoulder. “Nisha, why don't you give Mikhael his space? It's rude to just crawl on people. You're a big girl now.”

The Emir waves a hand dismissively. “Please, Zahia. Let her do as she pleases. I'm sure our friend here doesn't mind. Right?”

This Zahia woman cuts you off before you can respond. “It's not about whether he minds or not, it's about turning your daughter into a proper lady, and a proper lady does not go climbing into strangers' laps.”

The Emir rolls his eyes in an exaggerated fashion before turning his attention to you, Nisha busy trying to climb off of your legs without falling. You wind up helping her down, at which point she hops back into her own chair. “Allow me to introduce my first, and favored, wife. Zahia El-Hashem, meet Mirza Mikhael Abdul-Hakim.” She nods her head politely in greeting, but the Emir is already forging ahead. “How have you been, Mikhael? I trust things are well? That incident in the palace has been taken care of, I trust you got Kadir's letter.”

The incident he refers to is no doubt the matter of Shahzadi Shahnaz. “Yes, I got his letter. I'm pleased to hear that things are going so well.” You pause to give your order to a waitress. You simply order a bastani nooni, a sort of sandwich composed of the sweet desert smushed between two pieces of crispy waffle crackers. The waitress vanishes a moment later, and you return your attention to the Emir. “As for my life in general, as you can see I recently earned my Grandmaster's robes. Not in El-Amin, but in Anthus. I also plan on departing soon for the jungles of Elaudia.”

They dance across the table, climbing over abandoned bastani bowls and incinerating the stems of spoons. Your bastani nooni arrives shortly, and you tear into the sweet dessert even as Nisha is bewitched by your little display.

After savoring the cold treat for a short while you turn your attention to more pressing matters. “So, regarding those student fellows who live off to the north of El-Amin. How is the situation there? Are they taken care of, or is investigation ongoing?” You keep your voice down, since the streets are busy at this time of day, but nobody pays you any mind.

The Emir's face sours as he leans forward, whispering to you conspiratorially. “Not as well as I'd hoped...”
