Stage 88: There Are Worse Things Than This....

Whatever technique Kiku-chan has hidden her Barrier – if it is a Barrier – away with is working really well. This is fortunate, because you have half a dozen Water dragonnes and dragonettes, five Void dragonnes and dragonettes, and three Wood oni-children and two Fire oni-children surrounding you and Akari-niji-chan. Those numbers do not include the Water dragonette that is in charge, one Musumi Kanako whom you have gone to school with and who really doesn't like you much for a few reasons; nor does it include Hebiki Naoto, Akari's older sister, a Stone dragonette who has yet to personally announce herself to you and who might be here for any number of reasons. They've also clearly been warned you are no longer just a dragonette, and that you're especially dangerous. They haven't quite realized what you are just yet, but it's only a matter of time. A short matter of time.

On the plus side, you have Akari at your back, and they were not expecting both of you to be ready to fight. They're also supposed to bring you back to Oba-san, and Kanako-san actually offered a truce, which was kind of different from the usual. You've managed to get them off balance by mentioning the fact that neither Ryuu Wakaba or Ryuu Hauko have returned and that you know specifics that they're not privy to – that also includes most of their followers, assigned to escort and serve them.

Which means neither the Void dragonette Ryuu Neriko nor the Wood oni-child Benten Fuuko, your cousin's harem members, have returned to Oba-san. With the someday-demigod of insanity (a.k.a. your cousin) safe and out of the way in Hinata's care you're certain they are safe too. It's a nice change of pace.

Other trump cards up your sleeve are three Kaga Clan sorcerers and the body of Ryuu Wakaba. Well, you have four Kaga Clan sorcerers, but one actually might be a good girl. You also are two hundred years older than they think you are, and you have not one but three kami in your possession: Matagama-no-Shitoki, the necklace that defends against magic; Ame-no-Omukade-no-Musume, your mukade youkai possessed wakizashi, and Wakaba's nodachi, which you haven't discovered the name of as of yet, since you only realized it was a kami recently.

Currently, Akari, armed with a fifteen foot length of oni-forged chain, is facing most of the oni-children and her sister – though her sister is hanging back – and you're facing off most of the Water dragonettes, with a little mixture of either-or. Kanako-san is looking very nervously at you, though only another Water dragonette (or your niji-chan) could tell. Oh wait, that's almost half the people here, silly bitch. Of course, you main objective at the moment is to get at least SOME of the people that are hounding your family off your freakin' tail! Whether it's by making a deal with Oba-san, killing off the foreign mercenaries being used by Hojo Technical Group, or fucking with the Japanese government itself, you need breathing room.

And by the kami, if it takes killing a double dozen Clan Ryo and foreign military personnel to do it, you're going to get it fuckin' done tonight.

[+] Well, Akari's sister is here, it would be rude not to introduce yourself....

You flick your fan open and wave it in front of your chest slowly, telling the Water dragonettes you've got plenty of secrets to tease and torment them with, while implying you're in no rush at all. It's not really a lie even by omission, as poor Lieutenant Steinhausen said that the Colonel would be expecting her back, prisoner-in-hand or no. That pins him down right where he is.

Akari whirls her stolen chain from side to side now, slowing it a little, making it less threatening. Well, as much as the single best hand-to-hand fighter outside of the weapon master of Clan Ryo can be considered 'less threatening'. The two of you together were a natural disaster before you gained your true power and before Akari was granted the blessing of the Kamuy of All Oni. They don't know about that either.

“I'll let you think on it a little more, Kanako-san. Let me say hello to Akari-niji-chan's sister.”

“Ni....niji-chan?” Kanako-san looks a little mystified, but this time Akari doesn't deny any and all implications the title might have, which is actually kind of nice. You start circling around, as does Akari, until you've traded places. That this gives you an overall view of the enemy is helpful, of course, but you know where everyone was anyways. Once your positions are reversed, the chain picks up speed and she keeps it on one side of her body.

Akari-niji-chan doesn't like Kanako-san all that much either.
>>
>>41135974
The first thing you notice about Hebiki Naoto is her hair. Not so much that it's short, but that it's bright neon pink. And then there's her breasts. She outclasses Er Yin-sensei by at least two cup sizes, and maybe a few inches around as well because she's muscular as all heaven and wearing freakin' skin-tight clothing. Finally, you notice she's using a saw-toothed Chinese dao for a weapon, which is pretty strange. Given that she's a Stone dragonette, you can't imagine why she'd want something saw toothed rather than sharp or blunt.

Folding the fan, you give Hebiki Naoto a formal Chinese salute, and a polite bow after. She seems slightly impressed and somewhat amused as she steps from behind the oni-born and the other dragon-born. “Greetings, Hebiki Naoto. So sorry for stealing your sister out from under her foster clan. I haven't heard too much about you, but I sincerely hope you understand that Akari-niji-chan is my precious friend, and I'm terribly afraid I'll need her help for a while yet.” You bow again and then relax, feeling several sets of Void and Water Eyes open, as well as at least one set of Fire Eyes.

The hand signals that rush around the circle are quick and nor terribly well hidden due to the urgent excitement behind them. Naoto-san seems not to notice.
>>
>>41136006
“Well, my little sister likes lilies, does she? That's something of a surprise. I thought she'd be thoroughly turned off by any idea of love, outside the strictly platonic. It seems that Kinashi Tsuki failed to make a suitable impression on my sister. Have you really had her in your bed?” It takes you a second to figure out who she is talking about, but then you recall a very similar name: Kinashut. Kinashi-Tsuki. Of course, Oba-san. Clever wordplay. The way Naoto's eyes are wandering your body even through the light sun-dress and simple blouse would definitely receive a glare from your wife though – she's not doing a weapon check!

[XXX] Your sister is far more complicated than that, but that really isn't for me to discuss!
[X] I'm afraid I have to take full responsibility, in every way, Naoto-sama.
[X] That's a little personal, I'm afraid.
[+] I hope that I meet your approval otherwise, onee-sama!

Naoto-sama is nothing like her sister at all it seems, especially where boldness is concerned. She has no qualms about giving you a look over, while suggesting her sister should be utterly asexual. Still, she hasn't been really rude to ~you~, so a little politeness and some flattery may help.

Oh, who are you kidding, you can't leave it at that.

“Akari-niji-chan is very much a person of great depth and skill alike. I would hesitate to presume that she could be so easily explained as that.” You flick the fan open, well aware that the Void dragon-children are very much aware that in your hand it's a weapon of high caliber now – no magic tool, but easily augmented by your own well-honed magic even outside a barrier. “Still, while I wouldn't deign to speak for her part, I can say that I am afraid I have to take responsibility.”

The two Fire oni-children, a young woman and a young man suddenly look at each other in shock. The Void dragon-children immediately look at one another and at you in shock and no small amount of awe. Naoto-sama blinks, then frowns at you. “What do you mean by taking responsibility?”

You bow low and then stand up again. “I hope that I meet your approval as the father of her child, Naoto-sama.” You can just feel Akari's grin.

Kanako leaps over you and Akari – and you have to reach back to keep Akari from taki8gn her out of the air – to land next to Naoto. “YOU got her PREGNANT?”
>>
>>41136703
“Yes, with some help from her lover. I hope that isn't an issue, Kanako-san....” Keeping a straight face is really freakin' difficult but the alarm and shock you're sowing is really worth it all.

Ryu Ginkai, a Water dragonne goes to one knee, leaning forward as he addresses Kanako. “She's a demigod and a dragonette....she could probably impregnate any dragon-born girl that isn't of Stone.”

But it's her reaction to the word 'demigod' that really matters to you, because the fear and shock transforms into the worst kind of envy and disdain. “So, that';s why you were so favored by Oba-chan. How foolish of me not to realize sooner.”

Naoto-sama bites the inside of her cheek and then shakes her head. “Be that as it may, I'm afraid that I'm not going to be able to ignore Akari's lack of control. She can't be trusted to be safe around ordinary dragonettes, as much as you may care for her. The Hebiki family are very different from the average dragon-child, and you'll regret having her in your newly formed clan, Ryukusa-san.”

[] Naoto-sama, you're being quite rude to my subordinate, and I don't like your tone either Kanako-san.

Don't make promises. You should know how dangerous they are.
>>
>>41137487

Are you implying Ryukusa would ever go against it?

A demigod's promise is powerful. And that issue deserves a powerful answer
>>
[X] All right you dumb carps and slaves, here's my cards on the table – except for the aces up my sleeve.

(These Water dragons are using Water dragon diplomacy to discuss a retreat because they weren't prepared for you and I as we are, aniki.) Akari's Void-speech is clear and calm in your mind. (It's not just that you're a demigod, but the Void dragonne informed them that I have Nikne Kamuy's protection and blessing.)

(I'll see if I can tip the balance further then.) Undoing the buttons of your blouse, you slowly reveal the tight leather halter-neck vest you're wearing underneath, as well as the talisman Kiku-chan gave you – Matagama-no-Shitoki. “Oba-san was very deliberate in her manipulations, and neither of you were foolish about anything at all. Akari-niji-chan was well trained, and deliberately isolated, but even with the poisons and the faulty teaching and training I received, I managed to overcome the barriers that were meant to keep akari-niji-chan ignorant and alone. As a result, we've been keeping her berserker nature under very good control ~together~.”

Dropping both the fan and the blouse into ~Nowhere~, you unfasten the skirt, and let it too fall away into ~Nowhere~. The look that Naoto gives you is very much appreciative, but not just that – it's also got a strong element of desire to dominate in it, and that's sure as heaven ain't happening! On the other hand, the dragonnes and oni-born guys are all staring and quite distracted, though the dragonnes (and at least one dragonette who is also rather interested) are still wary of your power and skills. “Despite the lies, the aconite poisoning, and the trouble we've been through together, I'm sure by now you've realized neither of us is exactly what we were. Or even what anyone thought we should be.”
>>
>>41137575
I'm implying that it will get used against us somehow and that we were warned not to make promises by someone who was properly trained as a demigod.
>>
>>41137621
You sense and feel Akari going into a slight crouch behind you, and she stops whirling the chain around, instead slowly folding and wrapping it about her hands and arms. She too sheds her clothing, revealing her matching and complimentary outfit. “However, in spite of the fact you're both being obtuse about a few very vital facts, I'm not quite willing to take it to the next step so casually.” You take the pins from your hair and whip it back into a much tighter and more formal set of knots, nothing messy of casual about it now as you re-pin it. “It's not nearly that simple. You see, the reason that Ryuu Wakaba and her team haven't returned isn't because my clan – which Akari is a part of and I will never regret having her as a part of Naoto-sama – isn't because we killed them all. They were killed by another clan entirely. I have witnesses.”

Kanako looks at you dubiously, while Naoto looks like she'd rather strip you out of your shorts with her teeth. Whether or not your skin was involved. It's a little disconcerting. “While I admit that destroying Anonimous was my clan's fault, it ~wasn't~ our fault that we discovered they were being Ryo trained, and received a sanction order from Oba-san herself.” That nets you a few surprised looks, but less than you'd hoped for. “So, really, you have to ask yourself, are you feeling....no wait, never mind. What you REALLY have to ask yourselves, is a peaceful solution really all that bad an idea?”

While many are guarded against Water Eyes, you're only using the most passive aspects. Kanako-san is of two minds; she wants to test you now, because you're no longer the best of the Water dragon-children, but she's also worried about the mixed signals she's getting from her team. Naoto is a mixture of lust for, blood-lust concerning, and mild curiosity about you. Most of her presence here is about Akari, unfortunately for her. That is, unfortunately for Naoto-sama if she tries anything.
>>
>>41137678
Which is further complicated by the Water dragonette behind you speaking up – Ryuu Oriko, you think. “Kanako-sama, while one or the other would have been a good fight, and both would have been a hard fight, to fight a demigod and a Stone dragonette with the blessing of the Demon God of Oni himself is asking for death – even if we might have a chance of winning, there will be deaths.”

Ginkai-san glances at you, then at Kanako. “Even with Stone and Wood, we're badly matched here – she's an ocean dragonette and a demigod, and all we have are river dragon-children.” Kanako-san's cheeks heat up.

Naoto-sama's expression has changed quite a bit too. “Clan politics beyond your own, and Nikne Kamuy's power used on behalf of my sister? That's....an interesting claim. I think I might even believe you.” Her stone eyes are on you, but you're not certain what they're telling you. They're definitely blocking your Water Eyes now, though.

[XX] ….Would you like to speak to my Kami about it?
[X] Just draw Ame-no-Omukade-no-Musume, and give them some more time to think.
[+] Let's just pull an ace or two out of ~Nowhere~....

You tilt your head with a smile....a creepy, dangerous, wicked sort of smile that makes even Naoto look a little concerned. “Would you like to speak to my Kami about it? I am sure they'd discuss it with you.” A gentle touch causes Matagama-no-shitoki to glow with the subdued radiance of white jade. (Please make them aware of your presence in my life, my protector.)

Then you pull Ame-no-Omukade-no-Musume from ~Nowhere~ and the slightly malevolent darkness that surrounds it gleams wetly in the moonlight. (Daughter of the Mukade, make your presence known to my potential foes,) you pray softly to her, and the kami in the blade draws several shocked gasps. You tuck it into your chain belt, and the two oldest of your kami gather their strength and presence in the moonlit clearing.

Of course, then you just HAVE to go and do something utterly ridiculous, like pulling a SECOND magic weapon out of ~Nowhere~, still sheathed and holding said sheath in both hands non threateningly. You set it down with the curve outward and the handle pointed left, theoretically a 'safe' position, if it weren't for the fact you are a Water dragonette and it is a magical weapon. (Yama-no-Musume-no-Okurimono, Gift of the Daughter of Mountains, show them the truth of the matter.) The tension in the clearing skyrockets, and everyone save for Naoto-sama and Kanako-san step back, muttering prayers and making offerings of incense pulled from ~Nowhere~.

Naoto-sama is looking impressed....and also like she wants to take you home and have her very violent way with you. It's more than a bit disturbing, it's outright weird, and that's coming from YOU.

Kanako-san is staring at you, struggling not to show any of the dozen emotions showing on her face as you kneel with a blade at your him, a white jade necklace at your throat, and a death-gift from Ryuu Wakaba before you. You can't sense what's being said, but the Void dragonettes and dragonnes are using their powers and a few spells, while the two Fire oni-children are both backing away shaking their heads. The touch of Akari's tail as she kneels behind you is reassuring. (Three retreating; the other three have all lit incense.)

“If that isn't enough, I have three Kaga Clan sorcerers who can tell you how I came by Wakaba's blade, which now serves me, and serves me well. She bequeathed it to me, for serving as her second when she committed jigai. Matagama-no-Shitoki was a gift from my priestess, and being what it is, cannot bear false witness.” You run your fingers down the sheath of your wakizashi. “And this one I made myself, and has been at my side through the worst.”

There is only the soft sound of prayer, spell, and wind in the grove for several minutes. Kanako-san turns to her allies and speaks softly while the ones behind you move to regroup with the others. Her forces are down to only twelve, and almost all Void and Water, with a single Wood oni-child left. It doesn't take a genius to see what's going to happen next.

Naoto-sama, on the other hand, walks towards you, halting a mere four feet away. Akari pivots on one foot, settling at your left side, and slightly behind you, now that no one is behind you. “Well played, Ryukusa-san. I'm very, very impressed. I'll speak to my family elders about leaving my imouto-san with you for a while longer. But there's going to be trouble over her child – we don't marry outside our clan, and we never allow children to be raised outside the family.”

Not really. We're claiming our mikoto, but that doesn't mean we need to give tactical infos to our foes

Sure, make another enemy and someone who will be coming after us when the whole purpose of doing this was to distract and stop at least one of the three factions on our tail.

Antagonizing them now doesn't do us any good.

[XXX] You'll happily entertain any ambassadors from her family or clan.
[XX] Gently inform her that it isn't your – or their – decision to make at all.
[X] Thank her for the warning, and explain you'll talk with your own family about it.

You lay your left hand along Akari-niji-chan's knee, and firmly press the points of your claws into her skin. The seething cauldron of violence calms, and she remains sitting where she was, no one the wiser....except, perhaps her sister, who smiles knowingly.

You smile and incline your head to her, noting that Kanako's troops are dispersing quickly, and Kanako herself, along with Ginkai, are waiting their turn patiently. Taking your temper in hand, you speak softly, to Naoto-sama alone, crafting a momentary wind barrier against noise and moving your head so that they cannot read your lips.

“I will gladly accept any ambassadors or emissaries from your clan or your family, Naoto-sama. You seem like a very straightforward person, who speaks her mind. To honor that, allow me to please inform you that it is not up to me, my wife, nor any of my family safe Akari-niji-chan and her lover. And sadly, I must include you family and clan in that as well; the child is hers, and her lovers, and it was my privilege to grant her the child....but the choices are hers and her lover's alone.” You look up at her, glancing pointedly behind her. “I appreciate your concern, of course, but I should also mention that Kuraokami has a new steward and new major-domo, as a result of wishing to interfere with my family.”

Naoto-sama fingers the hilt of her sword, clearly displeased by your temerity. “Is that so.”

“Yes. He did send his daughter to smooth things over, which was a kindness on his part.” That kind of stillness you recognize very well. If it had been Akari, you would have said she was about three steps from her most dangerous. Naoto-sama, though....you'd hazard a guess that she's a few steps further, probably more like....very concerned. “The gift of the Wishing Jewel was particularly generous on his part.” Right, that seems to have gotten the message across: her shock is almost palpable, and you can feel Akari trying not to smile.

Naoto looks into your eyes....and despite her shock and surprise, you can see a rather distressing amount of hunger in her gaze as well. It takes a lot of effort not to meet that gaze with an equally challenging gaze of your own. She knows that you'll challenge Gods and Dragons....but that doesn't entirely mean she doesn't want to test you, to poke at the hornet's nest. Despite that, you're certain she won't go against her own family's wishes. Oba-san's, definitely, but not her own elders.

[] Break eye contact first as you bow politely from the neck.
[] Maintain eye contact, but keep everything in check.
[] ….just give her atiny, tiny glimpse of that Smile.
[] Tell you you'll look forward to hearing from her family soon.
[] Excuse yourself and your niji-chan and move on to Kanako.

[X] Tell you you'll look forward to hearing from her family soon.
[X] Excuse yourself and your niji-chan and move on to Kanako.

You thank the kami you've called upon for their help, and place the nodachi into nowhere, while leaving your wakizashi out. You're rather proud of yourself for two things, really. First, despite everything you revealed to Naoto-sama, she has no idea what you truly are or what you will become. Only that you're a demigod with some magical tools that outwitted the daughter of Kuraokami and extorted gifts from him. There are other spirit-children who have achieved more, and plenty more powerful than you are at the moment, but none as young as you seem. Second, you've managed to keep her just interested enough to pay close attention to the things you need her to pay close attention to – the fact that Akari is yours, that she and her clan shouldn't presume anything about her any longer.

Bearing those things in mind, you stand up and bow to Naoto-sama, Akari rising after you and bowing much more deeply. And you do bow pretty deeply; not as deep as you should maybe, but as deep as you can without the part of you that understands what you are getting pissed at you. “I look forward to hearing from your family and your clan, Naoto-sama. You have been very kind to me for listening to a small dragon.”

Naoto looks pleased and bows, a little less deeply. “It has been....interesting. Educational as well. Please take care of my sister and her child, Ryuu Ryukusa.” She steps back, rather than making you walk around her, which is an unnecessary politeness on her part, but it does up your respect for her a bit more.

Even is she's as creepy as all heaven.
>>
>>41140718
You dissolve the bubble of wind, and smirk at Kanako-san. “I take it you've decided that it's not worth it.”

“Yes. I don't think anyone that isn't an elite member of Ryo clan will accept the job ever again. You've changed....and you're not what anyone said you were, ever. Except honorable. That, at least, I think is true. So, we have to tell Oba-san what we saw here.” You nod casually. “Ryukusa-san....I think you should try and talk to Oba-san. Turn over the Kaga clan sorcerers to me, and I swear on my Pearl I will take them to Oba-san and the heads of Clan Ryo for you.” If she hadn't added that last part, you would have said no.

“Fair enough. I can't ask for more than that.” Well, you could, but she'd resist. You put up a small barrier, enough for you and Akari only, and quickly get the Kaga idiots out, still unconscious all. You move back to the real world, and you can see their confusion – they're still dressed like priests and have been wounded, after all. “You had to be there. But be glad you weren't.” Wakaba's death was tragic and beyond reason. And Oba-san will know exactly why it happened once she hears what the Kaga have to say.

Naoto gives you one more appraising look and then sinks into the earth, gone instantly. Ginkai makes a Barrier and takes the Kaga with him, while you look at Kanako-san casually. “And remember – you made a promise to me as I am now. Breaking that promise will get you into all sorts of shit with the kami, so I wouldn't recommend it.”
>>
>>41140744
Akari, for the first time, speaks up. “If Oba-san sends more people after us, they'll be elites. Any negotiation will be short and simple – and likely end in them dying now, because they never negotiate well. Tell Oba-san that I obey only the head of Clan Ryuu now; she cannot appeal to my old clan any longer.” You blink at that. You didn't think she was Clan Ryo to start with, but you had thought she'd become Clan Ryo. You'll have to ask for specifics some time.

“Yes, Akari-san.” Ginkai appears and nods, still kneeling neat Kanako. “Good by, Ryukusa-san.” She bows, without taking her eyes off of you, and you reciprocate. With that, Ginkai creates a cloud, and she and Ginkai leave on it.

You wait five minutes, until there is nothing and no one nearby, and then sigh, kneeling. “Well, that's one less problem to worry over.”

“She's right. You should speak to Oba-san. Tell her what's happening.” You frown at Akari. “It may be her fault....but she doesn't seem to have all the information either.”

“I'll consider it....but first I'm going to kill some mercenaries and soldiers. And you're helping me.”

If we're planning to take down Oba-san, letting them go back and report is technically a bad idea isn't it? I guess we'll have to hope diplomacy and being nice will pay off. Maybe we CAN point her somewhere else for a while...
>>
>>41140861
Considering you declared your true nature to the King of Hell in public, and how you got trapped in the Landlord's personal hell-dimension, it's a pretty safe bet that Oba-san is assuming all the worst except the VERY worst. She doesn't know the extent of your barrier combat ability, the massive amount of shen you have, or that you are in fact immortal.
>>
Why didn't we send a message along of what the foreigners are doing. I mean we mused about how Oba-san is still loyal to the Emperor, no matter how much we dislike/hate her.

She'd require either proof or first hand accounts - as a first hand account, she could determine the veracity through magic or elemental talent, which you're not sure if she has or not. since you have no proof other than what you've personally experienced and observed, you'll have to convince her in person.

That, of course, has it's own problems....

Thank you for running, XS. May I ask to what extent and direction the power of the Deadliest Smile trends towards? It clearly seems to be a mix of all styles, but seems extremely yin-heavy/mental in it's effect. Also, what possible weaknesses does it seem to have?
>>
>>41141505
Thanks. I was hoping to get your critique once I'd gotten a decent draft done. Still, most of the actual writing needs an example of Er Yin's perspective.
>>
>>41141586
The main weakness of the Deadliest Smile is that is is fucking deadly. It's an all or nothing choice - you're going to kill them, possibly more than once, and there's nothing they can do about it. It takes a very solid sense of self to manage it - without that sense of self, without that balance of love and absolute intent, it falls apart.

Obviously, those styles that resemble Razor Wit and Cold heart are the most effective counter, as are abilities that deal out massive damage. It's very weak on defense comparatively speaking.
>>
>>41141586
Incidentally, it's largely hung on the Void, as that is the direction outside Water that anon seems to take Ryukusa most often.
>>
>>41140932
Honestly, I think the true worst thing from her perspective isn't Ryukuza's shen, strength or barrier combat ability, its the fact that half a dozen Kamui have been helping her out against Oba-chan, in ever more direct fashion. That's ominous from her perspective.
>>
>>41142311
Oba-san fucked with the natural order of things by having Horobi assassinated in the first place. This is just the world doing it's best to help the replacement take up the mantle.
