You got accepted.

Seriously. You actually got the job. This is a joke, right? After all, of all the hundreds of people who must have applied to help test out Spectrum Entertainment's latest VR-MMO offering, you
>have no experience even playing video games – you only went to fulfil the job agency's application quota.
>made a complete idiot of yourself during the open interviews.
>just accepted another position elsewhere. You can't juggle both, right?

Still, the acceptance letter looks official. Spectrum Entertainment may not be one of the best-known video game publishers out there, but apparently they can afford to send a damn fancy letter to you, a

However strange it seems, the fact remains; you've been bored ever since you retired from a career of
>???

Besides, the job agency won't keep you on its books if you don't at least try this out now you've got it.

It's odd, certainly, but maybe they want a little more life experience on staff – there's enough young punks and smarmy graduates in those sorts of industries, which was why you felt safe applying for the position. Something to reassure you that you weren't really accepting a sedentary life, with an easy excuse for when no reply came.

Except now it has, and you have that confirmation in your hand.

Easing yourself over to the kitchen table, you settle down and re-read the cheerily-written letter. They want you to come in tomorrow – tomorrow! - and start training. What does 'training' as a 'plot-development assistant' even entail? Was that jargon-laden position even what you applied for?

Still, after nearly six months of doing just about nothing... well, it's worth checking out, right?

That's tomorrow's business. For now, you

Activating your iMPLANT (that fad for switching back to handheld gadgets is ridiculous; if science hadn't wanted you to shove technology in your head – well, scientists would have figured out a way anyway), you call up Matthew.

Maybe five seconds of beeping later, he comes on the line, sounding distracted by something. Right, that sci-fi show's on at the moment, isn't it? “Hey, grampy.” So respectful. You'll grind your knuckles into his head next time he comes up, see how he likes that.

“What was that game you're waiting for?” you ask, not bothering with greetings. “That one with the stupid name?”

“Conquest of Hildamere?”

That's the one. Dumbest thing you've ever heard – maybe they're running out of names that aren't patented. “Right, right. Remember you showed me that job for it?”

A moment's pause, and then Matthew sounds a lot more interested. And squeaky. “What?! You got it!”

Ha. “Of course I got it,” you snort, reveling in your ability to break a twelve year old boy's brain. “Did you doubt it?”

“That's so cool!” he squeals, apparently having given up on whatever he was doing. “Holy sh- shoot! I'm gonna tell everyone at school – when do you start? What are you doing?”

“Tomorrow.” And you have no idea what you're doing, but you suspect it isn't going to be like any of your past jobs. If there's as much lifting heavy objects or glaring at obnoxiously loud people... well, you'll probably enjoy it. “We'll say how I get along. They might all be idiots.”

You can almost hear Matthew roll his eyes. “You think EVERYONE'S an idiot, grampy.”

That's because they are. “No, I don't.”

“Uh-huh.”

“Get back to your space-ninja show, brat.”

“It's space-samurai, grampy...”

Same thing.

Spectrum Entertainment's headquarters are big – maybe not skyscraper big, but a massive block of a building, maybe ten storeys tall and half as long, certainly makes itself noticeable. The security guards wave you though politely, along with a request not to take any pictures of the building; if the sensors detect a camera in use on the grounds, the thick, metal window-covers will move to block the windows, and that's not fun for anyone inside.

Seriously? Who the hell cares about industrial espionage on a video-game company?

Still, you smile nicely and assure them you won't – straightening your tie as you head in to be greeted by a sharply-dressed young lady in reception, apparently waiting for you.

“You're early,” she says, moving forward briskly, one hand outstretched to grasp yours. With her hair pulled back like that, so no-nonsense, you suspect she'd be perfectly suited for your old library. “Maria Delgado – I'll be introducing you to your handler.”

Handler? The hell are you, a dog? “Pleased to meet you.” You shake her hand, grim firm. “I guess there's no point in introducing myself, huh?”

Maria gives you a tight smile, looking unpracticed at the motion. “Your file stated your name to be

I presume that's correct?”

… She looks like she's thirty or so. How much of that time was spent in diction lessons? “Yes, that's right.” Weird.

“Good. Let's begin.” Turning on one heel, she starts off at a clip, leading you out of the all-white reception, the receptionist giving you a sympathetic look as you go. “Before we meet your handler, do you have any questions? It's only a short distance.”

Explain?
>>
As Maria leads you down a sterile corridor, you ask, “What's this about a handler?”

“That will be explained once you sign the employment contract and non-disclosure agreement,” she states, voice bland. “This is a new position in the company, and we can't risk our competitors finding out the details. Needless to say, yours is a position of some importance to Conquest of Hildamere, and potentially future games.”

That explains nothing. You frown. “You can't say exactly what the position entails? The job description was pretty sparse.”

You follow her through a set of sliding doors and down a flight of stairs as she nods.“The job will involves long periods of time working on your own apart from your handler. It'll be hard, but your rate of progression should be obvious, and there's a lot of leeway for your own take on things - and we're here.” Stopping in front of one of the many doors – R. Lewis, the small plaque on it reads – she pushes it open without even knocking. “Russell, this is Mr. Smith.”

The room you step into is small, mostly taken up by some exceptionally modern computers and vid-screens plastered over the walls, showing – data. Numbers? Acronyms? Words? Squiggly lines? You don't understand a single one scrolling through its offerings.

And the casually-dressed young man turning jerkily on his swivel chair... my god. You've never seen a man so thin and... ginger. Is that shade of hair natural? You need sunglasses.

“Oh! You're my assignment! I mean – yes! Hi!” He stumbles to his feet, lurching forwards and thrusting a hand straight at you. “I'm Russell – Doctor Russell, I'm, uh, your handler! If you sign. Which you haven't. Yet! Can I call you John?”

While your hand tentatively reaches for Doctor Russell's (he pumps it enthusiastically, still beaming up at you), your face, expression carefully neutral, turns to Maria.

“Russell is very good with computers,” she says, looking pointedly at an empty point on the wall. After a moment of silence, the handshake getting increasingly awkward, she adds, “Shall we go over the contract and NDA?”

“Yes. Now, please.”

“Mm, I think that'd be best,” Maria mutters, reaching out with both hands to pluck the Doctor's hand from yours. “What have we learned about physical contact, Russell?”

He perks up even more and announces, “There are limits to all touching, including time and- oh.” Now he deflates. It's impressive. “Sorry?”

“Most of your interaction with Russell will be over comms,” Maria explains, almost apologetically, stepping over to his desk and opening one of the drawers, pulling out a sheaf of papers. “The NDA is fairly simple – it just means you won't tell anyone anything regarding the job, whether you accept it or not. Once you've signed that, we can explain everything further, and you can see the contract.”

You take the proffered document from her, ignoring Russell, who's ambled over to check one of the vid-screens. Looking through, it does indeed seem standard, written for the layman; no nasty little surprises. Plucking a pen from the desk, you sign it quickly and hand it back.

“Good.” All-business again, Maria motions for you to take a seat on the swivel-chair (at least Russell has good hygiene), and hands over the contract as you sit.

“Again, it should be fairly easy to understand, but to summarise, it's a five year contract, $80,000 a year, medical included – that's including anti-aging treatments, which you'll recognise as non-standard – but this is hardly a standard nine-to-five job.”

You raise an eyebrow, not yet reading the contract. “I guessed that. You mind explaining whatever it is you're avoiding?” Anti-aging treatment is expensive – it's one hell of an incentive by itself.

(1/2?)
>>
>>41136976
She takes a deep breath, eyes fixed on you. “Artifical-intelligence has come a long way, but not far enough. NPCs-” At your blank look, she explains, “non-player characters in games – the characters you interact with – have their limits, especially when you're creating a whole world. All the responses needed to deal with whatever the players do, especially in a VR-MMORPG, can't be coded in, and it breaks the player's immersion when they get a bad response. So while the unimportant NPCs can be accepted that way, the more important ones need...”

“More realism?” A little niggle in your instincts tells you where this is heading.

Looking faintly uncomfortable, she nods again. “Correct. And with AI still lacking, we need 'actors' to play the part. This is the first game we've ever done this with, but Conquest will make or break us as a company, and it needs to be perfect.” She motions towards the screen Russell's looking at, now displaying a beautifully rendered forest. If people thought that our AIs were better than other companies, faster to adapt, more compelling...”

“You make a ton of money,” you finish bluntly. “And I was picked because?”

“You've never played games!” Russell butts in, excited all over again, almost bouncing. He must only be mid-twenties at most. “You don't know the clichés, the things players are bored with – anything you do has a real chance of surprising them! And you won't brag to other gamers, or let things slip on forums, and you have a load of life-experience to call on, you're smart-”

“THANK YOU, RUSSELL.” The glare Maria shoots at him is impressive. “My point is – we want you to play the main villain of our piece.”

The villain. Well, that could be... fun.

>(Questions? Negotiation? The 'small print'?)
>>
>>41136990

What are the hours?
Are you going to hook me up to some life support system and stick me inside your computers for weeks at a time?
>>
>>41137055
>>41137326
“The reason we're offering so much is three-fold; firstly, you'll have to be in-character at almost all times within the game. Russell can tell you if a player is nearby or spying on you – which you aren't allowed to act on unless your own abilities will let you detect them – but we don't want you slipping up and mentioning something from the real world, for example. It's high-stress.” Steepling her hands, Maria frowns as she continues.

“The second and third reasons are related – the work hours. Instead of a normal VR-headset or chamber, you'll be in a statis-chamber, similar to the ones used for serious medical cases. It'll allow you to be mentally functional for longer without problems, letting you work from 7am to 12pm, local time. Short breaks are possible if there's no players interacting with you.”

That... does not sound good. Mind you, you don't have a very active life, but still. “And the third reason?”

She gives a small sigh. “Some people play at ridiculous hours, if someone manages to hunt you down during your off-time, we want you awake and back in the chamber to interact with them. You'll technically always be on call, 24/7, even holidays.”

Ouch.

>>41137064
>>41137079
“As long as you make yourself a formidable and exciting villain, you can design your character and do pretty much whatever you like. Be the mastermind in the background, conquer a country, go full evil overlord – whatever you like. If you decide to fight the players yourself, though, be aware that your character can be killed... and we'd rather you weren't.”

Now, that's interesting. “Why not?”

“Aside from the fact that it makes our game less impressive?” Maria looks put out. “There's a real life reward for killing you – and no, it can't be claimed by anyone you know, or who's involved with the company. It should encourage people to go after you though.”

(1/2 hopefully things will get shorter soon)
>>
>>41137440

>>41137078
From a brief skim, you can't see anything worrying in the contract. It all seems to be as described. Maria also refuses Matthew becoming an alpha-tester – the release is, a first-ever, being put straight to the public, a major risk – but she does offer the possibility of a free copy and no monthly-fees for him, as well as him being 'randomly' given a special item. From the quiet squeal Russell makes, you suspect the item in question must be fairly impressive.

Schedule some off-time, just a day out of the month where we have off. Make it a once-a-month thing where the villain is unreachable because he disappeared into a portal to recharge his magic or some fantasy mumbo-jumbo like that. If this is such a high-stress job, we're going to need a bit of time to unwind and de-stress.

>Accept

It takes a bit of wrangling, but whatever position Maria has, it's high-ranking enough for her to negotiate and accept a slight change without having to confer with anyone (not that you can tell for certain, with today's practically-invisible comms technology). You'll get the first and last days of each month off, barring absolute, total emergency, which should give you enough time to attempt a regular life, or at least see your family.

You sign the contract after a quick read-through, and Maria even manages a relieved smile. Russell apparently doesn't notice, tapping away at some kind of mocked-up keyboard... thing. You didn't realise it was possible for humans to type that fast – and considering things are currently being written on at least two screens, he's probably linked up to and typing on the other screen with an iMPLANT.

Taking the contract back, Maria checks your signatures and slips them inside a folder, brushing a strand of hair aside as she does. “Excellent. He game is released six weeks from now, so you have that long to design your villain and get used to playing him – we'll give you a run through the world so you can get used to moving about there as well. Would you like to officially start work today or tomorrow?”

With a reminder of the NDA, Maria says her goodbyes (Russell waves distractedly, in the wrong direction) and shows you out; barely half an hour later, you're knocking at the door of your family's apartment, and being let in by your tired-looking daughter.

“Working again, dad?” she sighs, giving you a quick hug. “And here I am, hoping I might get to work less in future.”

“Heard about that game company then?” Not like the bratling can keep quiet about something like that. You'll have to make sure you don't let anything slip about your real job to him. “Well, gives me something to do.”

You settle down for a few hours, sharing a meal – just you, your daughter and Matthew, who – after a bit of bluffing – thinks you're on some committee which comes up with quests and storylines for the game. At least that helps explain why they'd want a well-read librarian on the team.

There's a twinge of guilt as you say your goodbyes (Matthew even more excited when he hears about his free game and subscription – his mother is rather less impressed); you haven't spoken to your son in maybe a fortnight now, not seen him for a month. He's more stubborn than you are, so any communication isn't going to start from his end.

Still, you have other things to deal with for now.

---

Another day (that damn sunlight again!) and you're seated in Russell's cramped office, a chair of your own this time, surrounded by the humming and beeping of various computers and the constant whine of ventilation to prevent their overheating.

“All right,” Russell grins, throwing himself into a chair and looking at you expectantly. “You've got – wow, pretty much all the freedom you want, as long as it's fun for the players, so – what sort of villain do you want to play? It's low-tech, maaajorly fantasy, so something demonic, maybe? Or a human? Monster?”

>>41138330
A human, the son of a dethroned king/emperor who struck a bargain with forces beyond the understanding of men to take back what is rightfully his.

Play-style is both commander/conqueror and warrior, a peerless swordsman on foot yet also a sorceror who can summon vile creatures through dark rituals. We'd basically be responsible for events that have to make the adventurers work together, but we can still be a fun encounter at a less global, dungeon-scale level.
>>
>>41138466
Could get behind this. What if we were assumed to be the main quest-giver at the start of the game?

This is a MMO. Let's face it we're going to have to fight at some point, and a sharp mind does not prevent one from wielding a sharp sword.
>>
>>41138330

How about some sort of fancy-overlord-magician type, like the Lord Ruler from Mistborn? That way we can do politicking AND boss fights. It also would let us interact with players in a non-combat setting.

>>
>>41138485
>>41138422
Why not merge these? Let's do everything. We can even have a final form!
>>
>>41138545
Mhmm. We need to pepper the early story arcs and quests with allusions to us being evil for the story arc to make sense. Perhaps we can be corrupted by some magical item or had always been this conniving douchebag yet charming politician. Something like this. Would definitely love if we rise to power from being shit due to the players directly helping us.
>>
>>41138520
You won't necessarily have to fight, if you can out-smart or out-run the players. That'll take a lot of effort to do so consistently, though.

The impression I'm getting from the majority of these is a human character, so we'll settle on that. Discussion can continue a while longer, and if there's two main choices that can't be combined, I'll hold a vote on both.
>>
>>41138522

>>
>>41138607
Won't people know something is wrong when they can attack us? You can't normally attack non-enemy NPCs.
>>
>>41138579
We're supposed to be the BBEG of a game with thousands, possibly millions of players. I don't want to say we need to be a sue, but we're going to need to be able to fight if we want to survive, sooner or later someone will get the drop on us.

Plus it'd be boring if we don't get to roll a shitton of dice while fighting some foolish adventurers.

And who doesn't want to give our grandson a massive beating so he'll wise up and harden into a true warrior?
>>
>>41138578
>>41138557
>>41138545
>>41138524

Remember, this is an MMO! Hundreds of thousands of players. We can't be there for all of their beginnings!

The low level stuff is going to have to be all AIs, for this to work as a concept. We're the exclusive content at the end of the game that is hard to get to.
>>
>>41138578
Have there be a large scale quest to retrieve a long lost item? A bunch of different guilds will have to compete to get it for us, and it can become a recognizable piece of our character for the final battle
>>
>>41138644
All NPCs can be attacked, as long as the players are okay with being arrested if seen. Be important enough or public enough no idiot will attack you for lulz and it should be fine.
>>
>>41138653
Yeah, what this guy said. As fun as the idea is, it has no sense of scale. We're going to have to delegate a lot, most real encounters are either going to be fighting in raids or special dungeon events, giving quests is honestly a boring job and not something I would do in-character.
>>
>>41138653
Ok, but how about content implying that we are 'suggesting' some of those quests to the NPCs?
>>
>>41138677
So what stops trolls who no longer care about the game just killing all the NPCs on their way out?
>>
>>41138653
What if we were the advisor to the king or something? We could have the king lock us up in a high prison tower and then we'll be assumed innocent and we'll be out of reach from all players for a while
>>
>>41138687
It sounds complicated, tbh. We're being employed to be the bad guy, but giving quests while sitting around the city while leading them to traps we won't even have the pleasure of seeing is a boring job.

I'd much rather be in the frontlines, maybe even leading an adventurer expedition while under a disguise and leading the adventurers into areas too dangerous for them or betraying them, or maybe just trying to make it more challenging for them.
>>
How about this. We are the second brother of the Good King -insertnamehere- that is in charge of the main good kingdom of the MMO. Our father died and our older brother took command of the kingdom's army to crusade against an evil army. We arranged for him to have a accident and took control of the army to reap both the glory and prestige. Studied wizardry and demonology in secret.

Doing evil shit through plotting and shell mercenary companies. Ultimate goal is to eventually turn the kingdom from a great place into the shittiest of shit evil lands. Will commonly speak and give rare quests to the greatest players who have earned our trust while maintaining a aura of false good.
>>
>Older human diplomancer, who never uses personal force, having control over the local governments? While being a Wizard Artificer? in secret. Players think he's a normal NPC who gives quests. Mainly relies on competent captains to lead his dark army/plots. Occasionally takes to the field during the grand culmination of any story arc or when tracked down. Has a habit of just teleporting out when severely threatened.
>Yes/No/Change it somehow

(I can handle the 'quest-giving' thing, Russell would certainly like the idea, so he can rig up some basic A.I. To assist with that. Or maybe make it so you only give the quest to those who have completed a load of pre-requisites.)

>>41138717
NPCs respawn. As long as you get away (or kill them) before you die (and Russell will warn you if anyone's flipping out on NPCs nearby, it'd ruin the game if you got outed by accident), you'll be fine.

>>41138882
That's just fucked up. You don't mess with MMO loot. That's game cred, and it's sacred.
>>
>>41138882
Perfect! I like the idea that we *generally* do good, but we have this entire web of magic across the entire kingdom that can pretty much shut down everything if we want to spite people.

>>41138889
I don't like the idea of evil for the sake of evil. I think our guy is working towards the End of Days spell to make himself a god, and that needs a ton of power and such to do so. Hence, building up this kingdom.
>>
>>41138882
Hah.

>Be main crafter and distributor of end-game magic weapons/armor/items
>They all have safeguards that make them useless against us.
>>
>>41138882
How would you deal with people going "My weapons stopped working when the BBEG showed up." "So did mine." "Where did you get your weapon?" and so on?
>>
Okay, so I know a lot of people have voted yes to what I already said, so to refine it further with idea from anon above:

>You are in command of the country's army, but NOT the king. (Possibly his younger brother?)
As an 'important' NPC, you will be out of sight most of the time (supposedly in your office/training/etc), when you're really off plotting or levelling up.
You can make occasional appearances to give important quests (game-wide or to specific players), which will work to your advantage, rather than handy out quests to all and sundry.

Do these work? (We'll be picking specific skills after this and our motivation.)
>>
>>41138902
>>41138882
This is a great idea. Imagine giving high-level plate-mail to the heroes who are both powerful and close to discovering us. As soon as they try to stop us, we lock up their plate-mail and cut open their throat.
>>
>>41138916
But we can just be as strong as them, so in the end it's less about your +15 sword and more about your +5 punch.

>>41138933
Yeah, that sounds pretty neat. Make us the financier, though, not the army guy.
>>
>>41138906
I don't want to be meta, but from a game point of view people can and will complain if their precious loot gets touched by events. First and foremost the company is going to care about sales, and as the BBEG the loot we give away is probably going to be high-level and interesting to customers. Making it broken from the get go is going to bomb player interest.
>>
>>41138933
That works
>>
>>41138933
Leveling up? We're gonna do that? How does that work?
>>
>>41138945
Okay, okay, that's fair. But maybe if we ever have to give out Super Amazing Solve All Problem loot, it's obviously fake.
>>
>>41138933

>>
>>41138933
I would rather us be some sort of high level bureaucrat Maybe even Grand Vizier who wears a robe.
>>
>>41138954
You'll start at level 100, but there's no limit on levelling, so you can go higher. You also won't have many skills to start with (those that you do have will be high) so you can also level any skill or magic you want.
>>
>>41138933

That sounds good!

While I like the idea of the being the treasurer, the players are much more likely to expect him to be the evil one. >>
>>41139066
Do we have to stick to a theme at all as the BBEG? Like if we're the captain of the army we can't just level fireball or other blatant wizard spells to max and throw those around, or if we're old diplomancer we can't pick up strength skills and wield a mace bigger than we are? Or does the company not think that kind of stuff would be an issue?
>>
>>41139184
We're us. We're going to play us. If we want to pick up that stuff, cool. The company, as long as we're being human, will let us run free.
>>
>>41139105
Why wouldnt we just build an army of familiars/golems?
>>
>>41139184
There is absolutely no limit on anyone's training. Set classes aren't a thing, you can cross-train in whatever you want.

Okay, so the impression I'm getting is:
>Older human diplomancer, in charge of army
>Gives occasional quest out, but mostly never seen
>Brother of king, pushed down line due to King's own children

If that's all correct, what's the motivation? Personal power and money without being noticed? To take over the kingdom? The world? To ascend to godhood? Something else?

All right, next up; skills. These can be anything from weapon skills, to crafts, to magic. Skills are NOT capped at level 100, so you can develop all skills as high as you want.

In the name of not being too cruel to PCs, to start with, you're allowed:
>2 skills at lv. 100
>2 skills at lv. 75
>2 skills at lv. 50
>2 skills at lv. 25

Write-in your preferences (feel free to discuss), and I'll go through. If I see anything that isn't possible I'll veto it (for example Diplomacy or Lying don't exist because John will have to fool people through his own acting). Almost anything goes, if you have any questions, ask.

Everything else you'll have to train in-game.

Depends how long they've been playing. They're likely to have at least one weapon skill, probably have some magic, then maybe survival stuff like cooking, crafts like smithing or fletching, etc.

You'll get help at the beginning to level stuff up more (and there's six weeks before the game is released), so you have time to get more skills.

My suggestions are imho:

Adjuration-100
Illusions-100
Life Magic-75
Summoning-75
Weapon Crafting-50
Light Weapons-50
Alchemy-25
Sneak-25
>>
>>41139876
sounds good, but perhaps we should switch staff combat and alchemy, since if we have to fight early on, then we messed up the manipulator role

>>41139825
Alchemy 100
Enchanting 100

Evocation (destructive shit) 75

Illusions 25

Summoning 100
Evocation 100
Rapier combat 75
Enchanting 75
Alchemy 50
Quick-Casting 50
Stealth 25
Illusions 25

This gives us a edge on sneaky mage skills while still having the ability to lead from the front as a commander. The Rapier skill should allow us to fuck some assholes up proper. We also have the ability to slowly work towards crafting and enchanting bullshit items..

Evocation will be petitioning gods/demons/spirits, Summoning will be actually summoning animals/spirits/demons to work or fight for you. Is this okay for everyone?

10/10 on being a QM that admires quads. Anyway, I would suggest ending the voting soon and just going with a general skill sheet. It seems like the trend is 100 summon and illusion with rapier combat + General magical item crafting capablities. 25 Stealth is pretty common too.

>>
>>41140146
>>41140211
Can we actually use our illusion skill to hide our level? Usually in game skills don't apply to measurements like that.

I guess this brings me to: How realistic is the game? Can we do anything we could in real life, and apply our magic any way we like, as if we really were living in a high fantasy setting? Or are there limitations like in all modern MMORPGs? Like, undestroyable buildings and whatnot?
>>
>>41140243
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Writing it up now.

>>41140247
... Well, if other anons like that idea, I don't see why not. (You found my weakness for adorable animals.)

>>41140273
Depends what relationships you build with the gods/spirits/demons A.I.s. They're usually good for buffs/boons/information, though, or for teaching you, but they will often want things in return.

For Summoning, they can attack people for you, pass information, spy, you can ride a horse, etc.

Actually I'm going to veto that use of the illusion skill, as it would make things TOO easy.

>>
>>41140400
Evocation is generally evoking an element or something else for an immediate destructive effect, in DnD and other games. For example, a ray of frost, a fireball, or a chain lightning spell would all be from the evocation school. Can't it be something like that?
>>
>>41140470
can we get a list of all the skills?
>>
>>41140485
There are individual schools for elements, rather than one general 'Elements' skill, so anons would have to train in specifically Fire or Water or whatever.

If seems like most people want Evocation as god-talking, though. Does anyone want to change Barriers (the Abjuration one) to something more destructive, or are we set?

>>41140523
Nope, because literally almost anything can be a skill. You can level up Origami or Line-Dancing if you want.

>>
>>41140732
Thanks, Britanon. I didn't expect anyone to go for this, tbh, I didn't even make a twitter for it. At least I've got the one I gave in and made to follow quests.

For those who want more combat skill, you WILL have six weeks before game release to basically do whatever the hell you want, so you won't just be starting with these. You won't have to be in character either, with no players around.

Okay, it looks like Evocation is most wanted for now, I'll give you an early opportunity to learn more destructive stuff when the 'game' starts.

I'll do a last update to wrap things up, then list my Twitter. I'm out tomorrow evening, so Sunday at idek o'clock will be next session. ALL GOOD?

I dunno, players are retarded and it's becoming pretty clear the QM is gonna have to go major easymode so we don't die to a mob as soon as the game goes live. And if the ez mode will be that strong, there's no reason to not do w/e the fuck we want, no matter how non-functional it is.

>>41141246
Why is the only combat situation you can think of that specific one? What if we have high level guards with us, and it's a 10v6 in our favor, but we still lose because our offense is shit and they have amulets of true sight so our illusions are worthless?
>>
>>41141317
I honestly think people are underestimating how much of an advantage that six weeks to prepare gives us. We can easily get our offensive magic up to a acceptable skill level before the game launches and then continue pushing it up on the side while doing evil bullshittery.

You lay out your ideas, letting Russell pick at them, occasionally saying no to an idea that has turned up in a recent video game (what the hell is this Final Fantasy XXVIIII, anyway?). By the time a couple of hours have passed (and several drinks), you've hammered out what seems to be a reasonable idea.

“The details can be worked out in-game,” Russell says as he codes your chosen skills and backstory into the programming, eyes fixed on the vid-screen. “You'll probably decide on more as you play the guy, pick his personality, things like th- ooh, yes, change *this*-”

Whatever he's doing, it doesn't look like he needs you for anything more right now. You quietly get up and head out of the office, taking the time to explore, waving at a security camera as it fixates on you.

The first ones might, if they're stupid enough to believe that a BBEG that hid behind deception this whole time would have pure destructive force as his fighting style rather than illusion. What he says that it'd be very easy for us to run and change our identity. No one forces us to use our telltale powers.
>>
>>41142177
I think neither of you understand. I will clarify:

We're a general using our army to stage a coup and enforce some crazy 1984 dictatorship where we're in charge. As soon as we do this, players will come for us. We will eventually have to fight some, and our abilities with illusions will be revealed. At this point one anon suggested we change identities. I pointed out this would not work, because with a different identity we would no longer be in charge of the dictatorship. I was replied to with gibberish.
>>
>>41142286
I see. I think the anon you've been talking with might have worded it poorly(I'll assume for his benefit) and meant that we'd ditch the dictatorship and start anew? Maybe he hoped we'd fight after most of our forces lay defeated, and we'd have nothing left to control?

After reading, yes, this is precisely what he meant.
>Well obviously we change identities, inflirtate a new place, and take a new role.
New place, does not imply us resuming command of our previous dictatorship. You responded with(I assume it to be you):
>Players will still be aware of our skillset and still hunting us.
To which the response was that it would be easy to evade and fool them, by simply adopting a different skillset until the time is right.
We don't even have to use illusions in the first place, giving the away. It really comes down to how it plays out when we get around to it and I feel that going in-depth over it now is a waste of time.

TBH I don't really see any issue here. I don't think the responses were gibberish.

so we make a control panel with a password on it. Problem solved. We could even pose as a resistance leader, create a high level illusion/abjuration of ourselves as the BBEG and "reinstate" ourselves to force the players to doubt every insurgency of just being another evil plan.

I guess, but at that point we've pretty much abandoned our goal, since the next thing the players will do is dismantle the dictatorship. I don't know if we're allowed to just drop everything and hide out like that, and I'm pretty sure the game makers will veto it. We're a high fantasy BBEG, not Carmen Sandiego. I guess it doesn't hurt to ask though.

>so we make a control panel with a password on it.
and this is what I mean by gibberish. Control panel? Password? This is a high fantasy low tech setting.

The resistance idea is fine as a method of survival, but once again I don't think the GMs will allow it.

I guess it really is gibberish.
I really wish I could find that one D&D story, about a group fighting a recurring antagonist. All he'd do is evade them and keep on sending mooks while ruining their standing and making them out to be the bad guys. I think his goal was to make everyone miserable. Inducing famines and wars everywhere as he went. Very hard to pinpoint what was exactly his doing and what was random occurance, player group was chasing what everyone believed to be a ghost or something that did not exist. I personally think that'd be what we should go for. Just sow chaos and destruction everywhere.

I think I read that one. Some merchant of death who kept engineering bad shit wherever he went, players caught on after a few quests. He scaled to their level and had all his skills put into methods of escape. They finally caught him by using a scroll of time stop, and they found him partway through reading his own scroll of time stop.

That would be cool to do, but we'd have to change our motivation and backstory. That said, I think we should change. because /tg/ will play a character like that a lot better.

Yes.

so? the setting has magic so: make a spell that enforces the claim of the authenticated person within its bounds (Control Panel) and make some sort of signature that is hard to guess (password)

.......
>old dictator is driven off but not killed
>new one pops up
>same policies as the old one
>when people once again fight him, same skills as the old one
>driven off but not killed
>cycle repeats
>no one will ever figure out it was always us

Lmao. Even assuming magic can be used like that, and our own forces will trust it, I don't think you thought it through.

>not making "changes" so that it looks like things are turning for the better while staying exactly the same
do you even politics bro?
a law for the defense of the poor here and at the same time make the merchants angry because of the encroaching government petitions to have it appealed. Make quests that lead to showing the "defend the poor" was an evil plot by some bureocrat in a power grab and you now have overthrown 2 governments without changing a damn thing.

It's you who doesn't politics if you think that the players will let the dictatorship keep standing for whatever reason. Once we get any of our abilities exposed and have to switch identities is when players, having lost track of us, dismantle and destroy everything we built. You're deluding yourself if you think they'll do anything else.

a timeline
>be bored
>decide to be overthrown
>pass asinine law
>make the issue binary
>found a resistance for one side
>as ruler start giving quests that lead them to discovering the resistance
>as resistance leader give them quests to overthrow current ruler
>overthrow self
>be bored
