Enthralled.

Positively, grossly, and utterly enthralling sight to bear witness to; this being.

Philomena, an unassuming name for an unassuming girl, a farce, just a stage name for the grotesque and bizarrely fascinating truth that sits below you.

The chomping and visceral chewing continues, but now accompanied with a raspy cooing. The blood of the past already dried along its lips, but the heavy mist exuding rhythmically from its maw leaves the future an uncertain mess.

What a beautiful metamorphosis.

The creature stops suddenly. You startle slightly, wondering whether it’s caught wind of you somehow, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Its mouth hangs agape as it stares blankly at the rising sun, and remains like that as if pondering the light’s journey to that point.

Its empty black eyes begin to moisten, as it still gazes at the ascending light, silently. More soft murmurs spill from its mouth, and without fully realizing it, you drift closer and closer in an attempt to see if the sounds coming from its mouth are more than just nonsense.

It stops and you realize you’ve come too close. The outline of your shape, wings, long limbs, and flowing hair, all is reflected in the two great voids staring upwards.

Long beams of bright light stretch all around your body, but that only causes the shadows casted from your body to be that much darker and thicker.

The two of you watch each other’s moves, or lack thereof, with great intensity.

You’re left wondering, just how much of Philomena is currently in there? Is it just a mindless beast that stares up at you now, or perhaps...

Regardless, there is too little time to remain frozen like this.

Hey there, anon! Not to worry, we've only just begun.

yay a thread

If Philomena’s conscience is absent from this harrowing beast, then your words would fall upon deaf ears, and if it is there, there still isn’t anything you wish to say to her.

You ascend, directly upwards to obscure the sight of your form in the growing light.

Interesting fact that she chose not to consume all of the flesh soldiers assigned to her, you note as you gain altitude. Whether or not this was a decision made prior to her transformation remains a mystery to you, for now.

You smile to yourself as you muse over the implications of what you witnessed. What an interest bunch of people, those who are in the Intelligence Council. With the sheer capability the four of you hold between yourselves, it makes your availability for conscription seem less and less like a fortunate coincidence…

Your eyes turn to the path leading toward the other targeted town. There’s not a single person walking along the path, but the booming sounds emanating from inside have all ceased.

That information will escape you for at least another day, all there is left for you to do now is return bearing the news of your success.

The ground crunches softly underneath your armored foot as you gracefully land. You glance at your tight, but flexible armor in the light of the day. The contrast between the dark folds of the light metal and the paleness of your skin is all the more marvelous to gaze upon.

Needless to say, you quite enjoy wearing it all, but you’re certainly not going to give The Empress the satisfaction of knowing that.

Nevertheless, perhaps there is something you can do to give your armor more utility such as your cloak. Something to look into in your free time.

But for now…

You hunch over as you brace through the pain of your crimson wings receding back into your pale back, a small price to pay to keep what you have in your hand hidden from your compatriots.

[1/2]
>>
>>41121866

While focusing on the mental image of yourself without wings, you hear a familiar voice.

“Little Empress.”

You search for Grievermillion in the passages of your mind, but you suddenly realize that the voice isn’t quite as close as that.

You open your eyes to see the red demon all but completely hidden behind a large brown cloak. Only small visible slits of his face let you know it’s really him.

“It’s been some time. I’m absolutely delighted to see you well, in person.” A small smile forms on his face.

You rise to your feet, brushing off the dust on your legs. “A dangerous place to be meeting up with each other. Don’t you think?”

He laughs knowingly. “I’m more than used to clandestine meetings, my Empress. We should be fine for a few moments until your companions arrive.”

His words send a bitter taste through your mouth. “There’s a new Empress now.”

Your words hit him unexpectedly hard. “Exactly the thing I wanted to talk to you about.” He turns to look behind him. “There isn’t much time, but I think it’s important that you know more about the past of The Usurper, who she truly is.” He turns back to you. “Unless there’s something else you wish to know about.”

You sigh, these meetings always leave you wanting to know more, and time is always uncaring.

You nod your permission. “If you think it’s truly important, then there isn’t time for anything else, is there?”

He squats shakily onto the ground next to you, and removes the hood of his cloak. “I’ve lived quite some time, Little Empress. I’ve gained a wealth of knowledge and I’ve met more people than I could possibly remember.” He stares into the distance at the rising sun. “But I know without any doubt, that the one that we call The Usurper is the most dangerous individual to ever walk these realms.”

Well, you can’t deny that statement, yet, so you continue to listen while keeping an eye out for anyone approaching.

He continues. “She was here long before I was ever born. Just for how long, as well as her real name are things long lost to the past. But the first recorded evidence of her existence was hundreds of years ago, in the creation of what we now know to be The Maw.”

“She created the realm?” You ask, incredulously.

“Not quite.” He responds heavily. “But she’s responsible for the current state that it is in, as well as the current state that the human realm is in.” He shakes his head. “That sort of wanton destruction is what made her known throughout most of the planes. All of it in an attempt to make it past The Ancillary Manta.”

What manner of ritual would be so absolutely powerful to sunder all of human existence? And more importantly, what lies beyond that creature to make it all necessary.

Your heart quickens with excitement. “What lies beyond The Ancillary Manta?”

Grievermillion seems taken aback by your question. “No one knows, besides The Usurper and The Ancillary Manta themselves. But if such an impossibly powerful seal was placed to guard what lies beyond, it’s undoubtedly better to be left alone.”

[1/2]
>>
>>41122938

He returns to the original topic. “The Usurper failed in that attempt, and was sealed away for what most thought to be forever.” He remains silent for a few moments collecting his thoughts. “But that was not the case.” His hand rises to his chin. “No one knows why she was able to break free again, but she did, almost twenty-four years ago now.”

Around the time you were born…

“In a few short years, she was able to bring most of all of the planes to their knees and only your father and his followers were left to stand in her way.” He continues stoically. “I told him…I told him as his advisor that he stood little chance. I told him that unspeakable horrors awaited him and his family if he continued resisting…”

He ran.

Grievermillion turns away from you. “So the army clashed, leaderless, and not a single pair of wings remain untorn at the end of it. It was part of her plan to collect every single feather, catalysts to break through The Ancillary Manta..”

You step closer to him. “Then how was she defeated?”

He shakes his head. “She was ecstatic in her victory. She burst into the throne room, fully expecting to see your father there…She tore through the entire palace, frenzied. Foolishly exhausting all of her power to search for him for days… only then we were able to imprison in her in a makeshift containment.”

[2/3]
>>
>>41122955

Grievermillion stands suddenly, eyes focused on the long path. “Someone draws nearer.” He turns back to you. “The Usurper is profoundly resilient, but she has, and can be defeated again.” He pulls his hood over his head. “She’s planning another way to break past The Ancillary Manta, find out what it is.”

“Grievermillion.” You call out firmly.

“Yes, my Empress?” He responds dutifully.

“Find a way to the Princess of Kyraen’Asils, tell her I sent you, and check in on her.” You order quickly.

He seems hesitant. “I can try, but now the defenses to Kyraen’Asils have been bolstered even more. It will take some time.”

Trying is all you can really ask him in that regard, seeing as how you haven’t even made it through to that realm yourself. But if that's the case, perhaps there's something else he can turn his attention to?

You shake your head.” Even with all the chaos, you still might be recognized as a fugitive. Use your talents to covertly gather any and all knowledge I may be able to use against her.” You rub your temple in thought. “If there remains anyone still loyal to us, they should be moved in manners productive to our goals.”

He shakes his head sorrowfully. “There may yet still be some who would follow me, but you must remember, Empress, your birth was hidden from all but a select few. As far as most everyone knows, your dynasty ended with your father.”

Unfortunate, but keeping your real identity hidden has served you quite well, so there’s no need to stop yet. Another mean of halting The Usurper’s plans would be to contact the Ancillary Manta once again, but your knowledge tell you that there’s only one means of doing so right now, the same way you did in the past…

“Then put them to good use.” You demand firmly.

He bows fluidly. “Absolutely, my Empress. Stay safe, I hope to bring you good news the next time we meet.”

You nod your understanding, and with that Grievermillion is gone from sight.

Only a few minutes later, Justina arrives at the rendezvous point.

“Awww, I was sure that I was going to be first.” She approaches you with keen eyes. “You didn’t cheat somehow did you?”

“It’s far too easy to upstage you to warrant cheating.” You smile coldly.

A bitter truth.

“Whatever.” She fumes and turns back to the path. “Philomena is running behind, though.”

“Maybe it was something she ate…”

The Empress smiles placidly at the three of you as you reunite after your individual debriefings.

“Well done.” She claps slowly. “I knew you wouldn’t disappoint me.” She stands from her throne and approaches a small shelf holding various bottles of perfumes. “You all did so well using your soldiers, I will need time before I figure out which of you to reward.” She back to the three of you with a bottle in her hand. “Unless, there is a reason that one feels that you should be rewarded, or that someone should not be…”

You’re careful to keep your eyes directly placed on The Empress, but your mind wanders trying to sense any sort of movement from Philomena. She’s as immobile as you are, leaving you to wonder what she knows about you, if anything.

Not a single one of the three of you respond.

“Hmm.” The Empress muses with a sound of intrigue. “The decision will be tough if that’s the case…” She places the bottle back down. “Philomena, you’re dismissed.”

Without a moment of hesitation, Philomena stands, bows, and then leaves the hall without another word.

“Now, now...” She turns back to you and Justina. “She’s not in any sort of trouble, it’s just what I want to show the two of you doesn’t pertain to her…skill set.”

Justina perks up noticeably from her slightly day-dreaming state. You don’t budge an inch.

“The two of you have yet to see this palace’s garden, so you’re in for a treat.” The Empress heads off and beckons for the two of you to follow her.

~

In what world could this jungle ever be considered a garden? Wild and menacing growths of impossibly large trees covered in excessive amounts of thorns line the small path you’re being led down. The growths stretch into the air and you and it suffer underneath the unforgiving light of this realm.

You silently sway away swarms small flying insects as Justina audibly bemoans ever leaving the confines of the palace.

“This better be worth it.” She whines quietly underneath her breath.

You’re inclined to agree with that sentiment.

You see a large clearing in the distance and honestly hope that whatever she has planned for you in this maddening growth of weeds is brief.

A myriad of strange and immense fruits growing from low-lying plants, at least that’s what you thought they were.

The Empress stops. “We’ve arrived.” She motions to the real part of the garden.

The huge transparent fruits in front of you are all filled to bursting with sickening red fluid and for a seed pit, lie humans of various ages and sizes floating motionlessly inside.

The Empress touches the side of a fruit containing what appears to be a young woman. “Ali informed that the two of you extensively use blood in your practices.” She turns her gaze upon the two of you. “It was unfair of me to move you so far away from your usual sources, so here we are.”

You can’t help but stare deeply into the red container she has her hand placed upon, the shape inside seem familiar…

“They are alive enough to produce a full fruit in about a week, so I think five for the each of you will suffice.” She removes her hand from the fruit.

“Something wrong, Sophia?”

You were staring at the inside of the fruit for far too long, but you still have yet to make out who exactly is inside.

You approach the fruit with confidence. “I’m curious of how the plant works as well…”

You’ve already puzzled in the time those few steps took that it’s an intense sort of parasitic relationship where the fluids are drained from the human to circulate throughout the plant and mainly in the fruit.

These people are almost certainly dead without the support the plant provides for what’s left of their bodies.

You turn your gaze upwards to the inside of the plant. “If I may have a small sapling to-“

“Consider yourself fortunate I was generous to give you what you have now.” The Empress states boldly in response to your actions.

The slight frame and long brown hair don’t belong to who you thought they did, but you’re having trouble remembering where you’ve seen this small and kind looking woman before. Whatever, if she’s no one important, and now she’s met her end.

“Of course. Forgive me, my Empress.” You bow your head and step away from the fruit.

A silence hangs over the three of you for a brief moment.

“Should we return to the palace?” Justina suggests partly for your sake, but mainly for her own.

“Let’s, we’re done here.” The Empress turns back to palace without another word, and all three of you return to retire to your own quarters.

You’ve always enjoyed a bit of quiet after a long day, but in this place, you can never truly relax. Your fingers trace along the cold marble walls of your quarters, trying to sense why they something seems to be watching you from inside them.

Perhaps you’re just being overly paranoid, but this place isn’t home, and it never will be.

You need something to focus your mind on. You stare at your impressive set of armor for a few moments, perhaps your cloak holds the secrets on how to make it more than it is. Although, there are many other things to improve upon. Your pyromancy has always served you well, and you’ve yet to completely figure out what The Empress meant in her lesson. Of course, there are matters beyond yourself you can investigate.

You remove one of the thin gauntlets from the armor rack. If the cloak protects you from losing control of yourself, why can’t this armor be made to protect you in similar fashions?

As you wrap yourself in the Control cloak once again, its voice finally surfaces into your mind.

“Your desires, your control.” It whispers to you faintly as if afraid it will be overheard.

Your mind focuses on making the armor more than what it is, to make it as much like the cloak as possible.

The visions surging into your mind spurs you to put on all of your armor. As you finish the final lace, images of raw latent energy pouring from your body come into view. You fall to your knees as you simultaneously learn how to control this process and feel the armor being imbued around you.

It takes all of your energy to crawl into your bed as you feel yourself losing consciousness. The armor finishes absorbing your energy and before you pass out completely you see yourself as a blur while wearing it. Almost any single enemy would not you’re right in front of them until it’s too late.

He sticks his tongue out at you, spurring you to go even faster.

Ugh, you hate that sluggish feeling you get in dreams, no matter what you do, you can’t seem to catch up to him.

“It isn’t a dream you know!?” He laughs and waits for you to catch up. “But… you wouldn’t be able to get me even if it was.”

Not a dream? It has to be a dream, Izu’s right in front of you and you haven’t laughed this hard in much too long.

“Nope!” He reaffirms what he said earlier. “That doesn’t mean I can’t catch you.” He stares at you not with emerald eyes, but with a bright hazel and not with his vivid white hair, but a tamed brown. You find yourself surrounded by large trees only found in the human realm and behind the boy lies a wood cabin, out of focus The wilderness reminds of what you've seen almost all your life, just outside the city in which you grew up.

You wake up with a jolt and tear through the covers half expecting to find a pleasant surprise. But you find none. So with your armor already on, and cloak in tow, you head out to the garden and then to your real destination, home…

>Generally accomplishes the tasks we give her in a satisfactory manner

Is this like some advanced form of bait or what? Compared to Ellie who has done literally nothing? Laurent who has done almost literally nothing? Hell, even Matthias and Aya wouldn't do as well as she would. Reread the thread where we sprung Grievy if you seriously believe this, because it is wrong on so many levels I have to wonder if you just jumped in a few threads ago.

We know how to identify enchantments yet?

>>41126469
To be fair Marissa is much tougher and tougher to deal with than Ellie.
>>
>>41126469
dude, where did you get that idea? Ellie is the one that traded for more blood duty and couldn't keep up. Ellie is the one who fervently tried to enter the inner realm with no way to protect herself, just to prove that she was right.

Look, Marissa's pretty bad, and I'll be the first to say that, what with her reckless and meaningless use of power. But Ellie is just as bad.
>>
>>41126257
Dammit I just finished baby sitting. Awesome thread regardless, thanks a ton as always!
>>
>>41126480
Hmm, not quite sure what you mean, but I think I will go with Sophia only being able to sense other enchantments on other people, and not being able to tell exactly what they do. But if you're talking about coming up with new enchantments for ourselves, then that will probably all have to come from the cloak if not first discovered somewhere else.

>>41126540
Sad that you didn't get to play, but you're very welcome!
>>
>>41126527
Marissa is incredibly overconfident in her abilities. She has almost no combat abilities. When her seduction fails she's going to get spitroasted and i don't want izu with her when it happens.
>>
>>41126567
I meant looking at an item and figuring out what it does just from looking. But you answered.

>>41126582
If he's with us he's dead or a hostage. He's safer with her in the wilds. Her command is powerful enough to compel us.
>>
>>41126527
Ellie is way worse than just as bad. Marissa isn't even bad. She's skilled, and more than competent. She tricked Ellie into the blood duty, she's mad powerful. I honestly am not seeing what makes her bad.

>>41126582
Dude could you stop? You obviously missed the thread we sprung Grievy, go read that now so the rest of us can stop being embarrassed on your behalf.
>>
>>41126582
So what're you suggesting?

Right now having him with Marissa is the best thing. While she is everything you said, she is tough and does know kinda what she's doing to an extent. Plus, she's very fond of Izu and wouldnt easily let anything happen to him.

And you have to remember, he's very clever, he'll keep her on track and keep them both alive.
>>
>>41126593
Her aura is no longer strong enough to compel us, I'm pretty sure.
>>
>>41126635
Without us wearing Command? It is.
>>
>>41126630
Nooo not you too. She has combat abilities? Does no one else remember her compulsion failing on that fuckhuge demon? She then proceeded to assrape it with shadow tentacles? Am I the only one who read that thread?

>>41126635
If we didn't have the cloak we'd be compelled so hard. Just, so hard. Literally anything she says.
>>
>>41126678
I remember. Vaguely.
>>
>>41126660
Has she ever tried to compel us in our true form? I only ever recall her controlling us when we were still human, but I might be wrong.
>>
>>41126714
We've had our cloak on since before we unlocked true form, so that would go untested. Seriously though, check the thread where we rescued Grievy. She is the fucking strong, other anon doesn't know what he's talking about or just has a personal vendetta against sluts.
>>
>>41126714
Yeah she nearly caught us a few times. She tried once when full force when we were asking about her contacts. She nearly had us and would have if not for Command.
>>
>>41126750
Yeah, it's still untested. But, I don't doubt her combat abilities
>>41126755
It wasn't ever stated that we were vulnerable, only that we wondered if we would be without the cloak. Also I think that was our middle form as well
>>
>>41126805
Point is I'm not sure our form gives us any resistance. Sure it buffs our magic, but resisting her isn't magic, it's an exercise of will.
>>
>>41126678
>she has combat abilities?
I don't know where I said that or hinted at that, as I said was that she kinda knew what she was doing. The shadow ass rape was what I was referring to with that. While yes she went about that in a way I wasn't exactly preferred too, it served its purpose in holding the guy off.

Again, what are you suggesting that's better than having her watch Izu? remember that Izu is fairly capable himself and will keep her on track and both of them alive.
>>
Okay, I'll be stepping out now. Until next time!
>>
>>41126824
It's got this vague as hell internal energy that could do everything or nothing. Wonder if we know how that works in character. Auri? You still here?
>>41126567
Also can we study our existing items to learn their enchantments?
>>
>>41126860
The guy you quoted said she was overconfident and had almost no combat abilities. Your post stated that "she is everything you said" which is pretty clearly agreeing with the no combat abilities line.

And I want to keep her with Izu. Hell, Izu has that strong fire shield we can barely get through, he hardly needs protection. I'm arguing against that one anon who said she was the most reckless and incompetent character in the quest, because that is a stupid opinion and he should feel stupid.
>>
>>41126864
If its a battle of will, then we've more than our share of practice. Not going to lie, i kinda want to see a battle between master and apprentice
>>
>>41126955
I really don't, because I'm very sure we'd lose.
>>
>>41126955
Thing is Will power scales much slower than her power does apparently. Also besides that one seal struggle with the Usurper our will ahs not been tested much. Also Win, lose or Draw, hurt feeling and seeds of betrayal would happen.
>>
>people thing Marissa could dominate us right now
lol
>>
>>41127302
Well yeah, we're wearing the cloak. If we took it off she could do it.
>>
>>41127302
If we took off the cloak? Pretty sure she'd have a REALLY good chance at it.
>>
>>41127302
Is it bad if I read that in a lewd way?
Cause I accidently read it like that out of context.
