You are Hugo of Ramla, squire to Lord Wilhelm.

And you have been sent to Jaffa to assist Sir Orlando, one of your lord brother's retainers, in organizing a trade deal. You were also sent to Jaffa after killing another boy in a moment of rage, your absence intended to ease tensions within Ramla. You have also been tasked with recruiting the Syrian mercenary Malik ibn Mujir. Unfortunately, the old warrior has his sights set on more fertile pastures, namely Egypt, which seems ripe for a civil war.

After being rejected by Sir Malik you extended the offer to his warrior daughter Sabeen. An old companion, she has deferred answering until the morrow.

And that is the state in which you have been left. Standing outside the Muslim quarter of Jaffa, belly tied into knots wondering if Sabeen will accept your proposal. You suppressed a blush that came over you with the thought of the word 'proposal' and shook your head. Tried to marshal your thoughts in an orderly way.

With Orlando embroiled in conversation with Count Hugh of Jaffa you were left with little responsibility to occupy your time.

The Syrian lancer Aymal had invited you to come with him into town for a drink. The two of you had been infrequent drinking companions during his time in Ramla, usually with fellow squire Jacques in tow. Jaffa was a quiet little seaside town, but larger still than Ramla. It would not hurt to sojourn out with the Syrian and have a little fun. Perhaps it would be a welcome destruction while awaiting Sabeen's resonse.
>>
Still, there were other things to do.

Jaffa hosted a chapter house for the Knights Templar. You might visit upon the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ. You had spent time with the Templars in Sidon and well enjoyed their company. You could well use some spiritual guidance at this moment.

There was also a training yard that saw the soldiers of Jaffa practice their drills. Jumping in with them and working out travel worn muscles might provide some physical relief and martial distraction.

Or you could just wander alone for a while and see what Christ set upon your path.

The clack and crack of wood against wood punctuated by grunts and bellows reaches your ears before you enter the training yard. Men in the livery of Jaffa square off in the square yard, spears in hand, crossing shafts and jostling to strike one another. Count Hugh keeps a well seasoned body of troops, only a few were currently in the yard.

One watched the two men exchange lances. He seemed familiar to you, his hair a rusty red, his limbs long. Young but not a youth, he had a nasal bar helm upon his lap, a long kite shield at his side, and was in the effort of growing a ginger beard, which was coming up in curls.

He saw you enter and gave you a hail. The two soldiers paused in their practice to also acknowledge you.

You go to stand with the lanky man, and the sparring resumes.

"From Ramla?" he asked. You nodded. "I am Odo, my father serves out that way."

And that's how you knew him. That is to say you did not know him, but knew the father. He was Tancred's eldest son.

Odo has a leather canteen which he drinks from, and then offers it to you.

He is not as well built as his father, but they have the same down turned eyes and taciturn expression. And they shared a grin, which Odo gave when one of the soldiers scored a killing mark on the other. It was a doggish expression of flashed teeth.

The young soldier stood up from the crate he had been sitting on. He shared his father's remarkable height, long legged, long armed.

He offered you the floor as he took up a fine spear.

"A bout or two?" he offered.

There was spare equipment propped neatly upon the wall. The two combatants were stripping off sweaty gambesons and sharing groans of exhaustion. Men who are accustomed to fighting one another in the practice ring were often quick to share a joke, which the two did while comparing notes on one another's performance. Grudges held from practice yard sparring were the marks of a weak character, better to learn from defeat than hold onto bitterness.

You rolled your shoulders, stretched out.

Odo again flashed teeth as he took up a second spear and threw it your way. You caught it, flourished it a little and grinned back.

There was something very comforting in the martial yard, having a spear in hand, facing a similar minded opponent. A synchronization of thought and body. All the nonsense of social niceties and shit drops away. All the worries, the anxiety about the future, the mundane. It disappears when your mind must concentrate on one thing, keeping to your feet, keeping your weapon in hand, and focusing on survival.

The two of you began on opposite sides of the yard, the two soldiers that had formerly occupied it hunkering down on the sidelines to watch. They muttered to each other, one giving off a barked laugh. The same drill yard conversation heard from France to Cathay.

You looked up at Odo. He had height, reach and muscle on you. This was nothing strange. You were used to facing larger opponents.

He saluted you, you saluted back. A raise of the spear before your face and then a slight bow. The warrior sign of respect. Then you fell back, stance wide, spear point leveled. He did the same.

Most of your spear work had been done on horseback til now. This would be an education in proper foot combat.

Hey HF, before the break, would you do an omake thread of like, what certain characters were doing when "X" was happening, like Mathilde's thoughts and actions when Hugo got super drunk on Christmas, or a preview of our opposition in Ascalon?
>>
The two of you square off. Neither of you are in a rush to score a hit on the other, instead you pace carefully, cross-stepping aside, circling one another. Odo had his spear low, you had yours high. Carefully watching, tracking one another's movements. Not watching the weapon, but more watching the shift of shoulder and neck for the small hints of gathering action.

Finally it happens. Odo lunges forth, bring his spear up. You react, lancing out from high.

There is a general rule that a high blow will out reach a low one. You strike Odo upon the head, ringing his helm, but his point finds your padded belly. If it had been a fight to the death, you would have speared the man through the face and killed him instantly, taking no great wound yourself. But this was not a fight to the death. All your blow wrought was a chuckle from Odo. The man reassessed, falling back into the wide low stance, point kept level.

The two of you paced again, waiting. Odo was not a fighter of pure aggression. He watched, he waited, he sent forth a probing feint that drew only slight reaction from you. But then he gathered for a thrust, knocked to displace your point. Instead you swept your point forward, again ringing his helm and sending the man stumbling back. He cursed himself for being caught, took a deep breath and instead launched a quick succession of strikes, hoping t outreach and over power you.

Each blow you knocked aside, one, two, and then when he went for a thrust you knocked his point aside and brought the haft of your spear up close, knocking him once again in the helm but with force enough you knocked him to a knee.

The man shook out his head, looked up at you and flashed a grin. You helped him up.

Another salute was exchanged. Odo drew off his helm and gave a puff of breath.

"Not bad Ramlan," he said, "You had me dancing to your tune."

"My thanks to you," you replied, "I well needed some distraction."
>>
Odo looked to his fellows and called them over. "This is Luke and Roger," he said, "Soldiers in Hugh's company. We've a plan to get a drink later. You're welcome to join us."

"Odo merely wishes to predate upon the serving maid at Hobb's tavern," Roger said, "Dangerosa, she's a wonder of Jaffa, yet this big thug thinks he can win her affection with silent stares from across the room."

Odo turned red and gave Roger a snarl. "Mocked by you?" he said, "All the girls of Jerusalem know you to be a floppy fish."

Luke just laughed as his friends bickered. "It should be fun, if nothing else we'll stand you a drink. Few can put Odo in his place the way you did just now," Luke said, putting forth a hand.

Guys, I have a plan: As Wilhelm, we go out hunting for a bit, looking for some leopards, and see if we can try to find a cub. Then, we capture the cub, then bring it back home and gift it to Mathilde, telling her that if she wants to continue practicing the martial arts, she'll tame that leopard cub.
>>
>>41104398
Not unless Wilhelm dies

Wouldnt mind Hugo learning to fight with a Scimitar though
>>
>>41104510

>>
You shake your head. "Thank you for the offer, but I'm in no mood for drink. There's much on my mind that needs sorting."

They look displeased by that. Roger let out a sound of a disappointment while Odo frowned much like his father. Luke shook his head. "Well you know yourself, but for my money a night of revelry is better for the spirit than a year in a holy cloister."

"Luke should know, he was expelled from one out Bethany way," Roger put an arm around his companion's shoulder.

Odo threw up his hands. "If you change your mind swing by the Saracen's Hands," he said, "We'll be there 'til late."

You are glad they are not completely offended by your refusal but they leave with clear disappointment. They walk away boasting and trading secret jokes, a camaraderie that left you with a small pang of jealousy. You had friends, but all so distant in Ramla. Seeing the three soldiers depart in jocular company made you sore miss them. Quarrelsome Jacques, Solomon with his ready laughter, and Maggie with her ready jests. You had not been able to spend as much time with Solomon, so busy as he with wife and duty, but you wished time could be made.

But here you were in Jaffa, while the were days away in Ramla. It put a loneliness in you that covered your shoulders like a shawl.

You lock your hands behind your head and wander away, the sound of the men departing slowly fading. Wandering through half-empty halls with nought but your own soft whistling for company.

There was much to think upon. Few of it putting you in good spirits. Least of all the affair with Sabeen, you thought on the dead boy and his weeping parents, and thought further ahead to Ascalon. How much weeping would that bring, along with glory to your brother's name? It could all become ash just as easily, and even in victory it would come at a cost.
>>
>>41104609
But that's not as cool sounding. Besides, rather than allowing her to do so, it's a sink-or-swim thing that could teach her responsibility and consequences.
>>
You stopped to consider a matronly woman fussing with a child. Servants of the keep. If these place were taken, what would become of them? Put to the sword, or raped, or pressed into slavery. Was it justice that such a fate should befall the peasant folk of Ascalon, because they had the poor luck to be born that side of Jerusalem's borders?

This you pondered in your wandering. And other such thoughts that quick turned black and left you unsettled. Perhaps being alone with your thoughts was a mistake. The more your thoughts turned to the future the more it seemed bleak, and the more your world seemed to empty of other life, until you walked truly alone down the back ways of the castle.

You turned a corner.

A sound came to your ears. It seemed familiar, and only as you stepped forth did you realize what it was.

A woman's pleasure moans.

They were standing together. Her skirts were hitched high and his hose were dropped. She had her hands placed upon the stone of the wall for support while he gripped her by the waist and thighs. She was clearly taken by the throws of passion, mouth open and quivering and giving wordless sounds, punctuated by his grunting and the slap of his meat upon her pale thighs.

Sir Barisan, the Lady Aines.

"You wicked slut," the knight said.

"Your wicked slut," she managed to reply with a wicked smile before the moans took her words away and the pleasure seized her body.

You froze. Lady Aines pleasure washed away as her face turned and she saw you. Shock took over her features as she pulled away from Sir Barisan, leaving him standing wet and exposed.

"Hell on earth!" the knight said, scrambling to put himself away. He reached for the hilt of his blade. Aines' eyes were wide and her face turned pale.

He stepped forward. "You skulking pervert," he said, baring an inch of steel.

All turned to watch Sabeen approach. She came in maile with spear in hand, her saddle across one shoulder. She walked a heavy tread and her eyes were cast with ill-temper.

Her gaze swept from you to Barisan to Aines. The knight's knuckles went white upon the hilt of his sword.

"What is this," she asked, "That you hold my friend to steel bared?"

Aines came forward. "A misunderstanding," she said. Aines and Sabeen were friends, she reached for that friendship like a lifeline.

Sabeen looked to you. "What exactly is being misunderstood?" she asked. Voice taut like bowstring drawn.

Hey, don't tattle on Lady Aines, she's cool.

"In the dark they thought me a thief," you said, gesturing to the gloom, "It's well away from the run of the keep. Sir Barisan reacted swift in defense of Lady Aines."

Aines nodded. "It is as he said. I feared so terribly when we stumbled upon him that gallant Sir Barisan took quick action. Thank the lord for your arrival Sabeen, you've prevented a tragedy."

Sabeen kept her eyes on you, hooded eyes that saw your lie, but she gave a nod.

"Well if that is all that it is," she said, "Hugo and I have business to discuss. Good evening." She cut the knight and lady a half bow, gestured for you to follow. You did so, looking back to see Barisan's gritted teeth. The man would not soon forget and you doubt would drop this matter so quickly. A man that fears for his life could do any manner of stupid things to preserve it.

But for now you walked with Sabeen back the way you came.

"Thanks," you said.

"For what?" she replied, "It was a simple misunderstanding." Her long stride carried her forward, a half step longer than yours. She kept ahead of you. You looked to her saddlebags.

"Are you leaving?" you asked.

"No," her answer was curt. A word punched. She did not talk further until you reached Sir Orlando's chambers. There outside the door she put down her saddle bags, leaned her spear against the wall. And glared a while into empty space, arms crossed, boot tapping as some dark thought rolled around her head.

Whether she remains a "viable asset" is up to the good Count to decide. Such blatant display of infidelity and sin should be made known, and I'm sure Hugh will offer protection.

If viewed from a pragmatic angle, it helps foster relations between Wilhelm and Hugh, as his squire is willing to risk his neck to report on a serious trust issue to Hugh without expecting reward.

"What's wrong?" you asked, a hand to her arm. You had a guess.

"My father...he cast me out," she said. A smile started to play out on her face, but it was not a happy one. "He said that if I wished to leave, that I can make my own life. He called me a disobedient, unnatural girl."

That didn't sound like the Malik you knew, but how well did you know him.

The smile twisted into something worse. You saw her throat contract, eyes glisten. "We said many cruel things to each other."

You did not think your offer would result in such a thing.

"This is my fault," you said.

Sabeen shook her head. "No, not at all. It is my fault. For being what I am. Whatever this is." She took a swallow. "I thought my father loved it about me. That I was honouring him."

You stood and watched, thought of what to say.

You looked the direction she was looking.

"We're warriors," you said, "That's what God made us to be. Sir Malik doesn't understand that. You're his daughter. That's how he sees you. So when you go to war its different than if it was one of his lancers or a son. He's not seeing a soldier, he's seeing his little girl. And he's not seeing a soldier making a choice of where she will fight, he's seeing his daughter chose another man over him."

You shift uncomfortably from foot to foot.

Where you speaking a load of rubbish? You meant your words. But who were you to speak?

"A warrior has to choose where they stand. Who they fight for. Nobody else can decide that for them. It's not your fault your father can't see you for who you really are. A warrior, same as him."

She didn't say anything back right away.

"We are warriors," she said. Her voice was stronger than before. "And I've made my choice."

And then, with both of you just looking at the wall in front of you standing next to each other, you felt her hand slide into yours.

"Thank you Hugo," she said, and she gave your hand a light squeeze. You took a small glance and saw she was smiling. You suddenly became comfortably warm.

When Orlando came down the hall he was in company with much laughter. A throng of nobles and knights, with some ladies of the court, came with Orlando as the centre of their attention Sabeen's hand was back to her side in a flash. Your scarred master wiped tears of mirth from his eyes, leaned on the shoulder of Count Hugh's man.

"You are a tongue to watch Sir Bertram," he said, patting the man. He near staggered to the ground upon his release. He was quite drunk. He blinked. "Ah! Lady Sabeen, good to see you." Then he turned and vomited upon the door to his room. It caused a titter in the company he kept. You thought perhaps they followed him more for the fun of his self-embarrassment than out of affection, and that rankled your innards.
>>
Orlando raised a hand before his eyes, wobbly even on the ground. Whether vicious or well meant, he enjoyed the attention.

Count Hugh was with them, smiling for the buffoonery. He saw you and rubbed his nose, giving you a wink. Empathy for your situation with Orlando.

Why not both? Ask for a 'private' meeting with Hugh, under pretense that it is over a matter with Wilhelm. Both sides get happy, we deal with none of the fallout. Just make sure to mention Barisan threatening us, so don't jump on them too soon or it'll be obvious we let our tongue loose.
>>
>>41106739
Maybe CHA? He's good on INT, just not the rest.
>>
>>41106705

What?
his entire argument was based on the fact that Hugo was pure and disgusted by the acts that he witnessed. We just pointed out that he is not pure at all.

I doubt Hugh would bring it up to Barisan, since it'll instantly ping that we snitched. But it'll help him immensely to know what lengths he's willing to go to hide this gigantic secret.

>>41106785
>A somewhat trusted source just confided to me on a problem between my subjects, I guess I should punish him for butting in affairs not his own!

God, this is like watching a mugging take place and providing an anonymous call to the police. It's literally just a "heads up bro, your company ain't doing right, keep an eye out, trust" message we're giving.
>>
>>41106829
All we did was cuck him with the queen, and he will never know about it. We really should keep good terms with him because we need his troops AND we are a lord under him
>>
>>41106757
I'd just like to point out that someone can have character flaws and still be disgusted by the actions of others. It isn't all or nothing.

Also Hugo is a young man while Barisan is a seasoned knight in service to his lord. A boy can make mistakes and be excused. A man is judged differently. The disgust Hugo -might- feel can as much be about a lord's retainer making merry with his unwed sister as it is about chastity.

Oaths of loyalty and all that.
>>
>>41106856
Like that won't make Hugh doubt a bloody squire, or Barisan not want to cut loose ends even more.

You're horrible at this
>>
>>41106856
Barisan's dick is on the line, as is our head should this get out. Besides, a lady's affairs are her own business. If we tell Hugh about his sister's affair, we may as well tell him about our brother and the Queen by that logic you're spouting.

The hugoic course of action
Ask Sabeen if she could look after Orlando
>>
>>41107160
The Hugo course of action is to keep his mouth shut about things that don't involve him and his.
>>
"Come on sir, let's get you cleaned up," you took Orlando by the shoulder, hefted him up.

Careful not to tread in vomit, you open up the door. You look to the crowd. "If you'll excuse us," you say with a dip of your chest.

Sabeen helps you get Orlando within and you deposit him upon the bed. The knight rolls a little on the bed.

"Ah," he said, "Ah. I should not have drunk so much." You were quick to pull him to the side of the bed so that he puked into the chamber pot. Drink was his chief vice, and you thought he could do for some fresh water. Sabeen brought him some.

"Drink it all sir," you said, pressing the cup to his lips. He drank.

You worked against the man's drunken fumbling to get off his tabard and doublet, leaving him to lie upon the bed groaning. You took a cloth and dampened it, washed his face and chest.

"Would that I had a wife to do this," Orlando groaned. He looked to Sabeen. "What do you say we make a marriage?" he said, "Just convert and we'll be wed the very afternoon of your baptism."

Sabeen choked on you think laughter, she wore a shocked smile. "A very generous offer," she said, kissing the man on the forehead, "But I must decline."

You lay Orlando down and soon he was snoring deeply. It had been an effort, you had a small sweat on your brow. Sabeen took the damp cloth from your hand, padded it away.

"Good night," she said, wringing out the cloth as she walked to the door.

"Good night," you called back, standing by the foot of your knight's bed watching her leave. Touched your damp brow.

Malik's men departed the next day.

Most of them at least. Aymal left with him, strapped to his saddle still passed out from drinking. Odo and his friends had found Aymal while on the town, drawn him into the cups.

Fifteen remained behind. None of them you knew. All of them more loyal to the black skinned horsewoman than her aged father. It had left Malik's body of troops whittled down by near a third.

You watched Malik's band depart. Soldiers and camp followers marching south. A disciplined train. You watched from battlements with Sir Orlando and Sabeen.

"Another week and we'll be done here," he said, "Head north to Acre and secure a deal there. You're welcome to join us."

That was said to Sabeen. Orlando did not recall his marriage proposal.

She looked to the lancers waiting for her below.

"I should take my men to Ramla," she said, "Get them garrisoned. Make arrangements with Wilhelm. Faster done the better."

Orlando nodded. "Well then, 'til our return," he said, offering her his hand.

They clasped hands.

It was with Orlando you then watched Sabeen depart, feeling a pang as she left.

She looked up once and held aloft her spear. You raised your hand. And then she was gone. Riding for your brother's hold.

You are Wilhelm, Lord of Ramla.

And you were on the road to Jerusalem, with your father, with the Bishop, and with the chief of his knights Sir Paulus Heinrici. And father's paramour, Hugo's mother. Your mother and sisters had remained in Ramla. Your mother was loathe to leave the company of her daughters.

For your own company you had Sir Etienne in command of your body of foot (a force of ten) and Alexius to fetch and carry. You really didn't like the way your men referred to him as 'Shit-For-Brains' but at the same time he really wasn't a clever lad.

It was a martial procession. The bishop rode with a shade held by one of his servants, enjoying the sight of the hard Jerusalem landscape without suffering under its sun. He was very pleased with your company and insisted you come with him.

You were happy too. It would impress the other nobles of Jerusalem, and the smooth interactions with the Queen. You were also hoping to meet with Ioveta and perhaps arrange a betrothal for your sister while you were there.

You had left Mathilde nominally in charge of Ramla in your absence, but truthfully power resided in a council of your chief retainers. They knew enough not to let a girl of thirteen be given tasks of real weight, but would engineer some responsibilities.

Besides which you had tasked Chihrizahd with keeping an eye upon her, and to message you if anything truly foul arose.

It was all in hand. Still though, you cast an eye back down the road to Ramla. You wre being overly precious, but still you were loathe to be so long gone from your lordship. It was your responsibility, the people under your care.

Putting your eyes forward you set your mind forward as well. Traveling to Jerusalem was seeing to the care of your people.

Until then...

You rode with your father. The man had little to say to you, at least right away.

"I heard last time you went to Jerusalem you ended up in a gaol cell," he said. This was true. "Try not to repeat yourself." A warm and loving man.

At night he put together the arch-bishops camp, and oversaw the disposition of his servants. Your father was a knight proven in battle, but with the bishop's household seemed more a chief servant directing the mundane affairs. Martial disposition was left to Sir Stone, who would often share a campfire with your father and his paramour.

In regards to your mother remaining in Jerusalem he did not seem overly bothered. "The wailing I put up with when you left put me off the woman for months," he said, "Better company is riding with us."

He meant Unna, Hugo's mother, who rode like a man and was fast bronzed under the Jerusalem sun.

He did not love her, he explained. He only enjoyed her more than your mother. "If your mother was less the weeper and more adventurous, your brother might not exist," he said, following with, "You will understand this once you've a wife and children of your own. After riding a tired mare you'll wish for a young filly to get your blood pumping again."

He was your father so you did not hit him.

Of course as Unna rode up beside him and you noticed the way her body moved with the bounced of horse-riding, you didn't entirely blame him either. She had a grin for your father that he returned and you wondered how a woman so kind and beautiful could care for a bitter old sack like him.

You kept well away from their tent at night so you never had to find out.

It was a week and then you were upon Jerusalem. The city lay with hard land all around it, a constant traffic of pilgrims and merchants. You saw the dome of the temple of Solomon, and David's Tower even at a vast distance. The walls were high and thick. It had little natural defense, so men had made some for it.
>>
>>41108201
>>41108203
we should spread rumors of us planning an attack on Jerusalem so all the Holy warriors & Mercenaries will go there & then we strike to Ascalon
>>
A camp that stretched around its walls had built up. Caravan stops and trading posts, living ground for those unwelcome within its walls. A city of its own in many ways. In times of war it would be cleared away, but peace reigned in Jerusalem.

Peace and Queen Melisende.

You made the sign of the cross. Your party dismounted and the bishop led you in prayer. The man was crying upon his knees. And when he was lifted to his feet by your father, sobbed against his shoulder.

"My lord's house!" he said, inviting others to look upon the Holy City.

Once that was done you led them down to the Jaffa Gate.

"Where first?" Unna asked you, riding up besides. She seemed gripped with excitement.

I think it might be a good idea to get the byzantines to be sympathetic to us

for our long term plans i know that europe will get war weary and itd be useful to at least have a defensive ally nearby
>>
>>41108238
> The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, pay respect to the Patriarch
> detail one of our men to run to the palace with one our tokens. To alert the queen that the archebishop has arrived in the city. Give her some time to prepare. And that we would be heading to pray first.

Knowing the queen, she might deign to come to the church to welcome the archebishop after his prayers since it would reinforce the archebishops good image of her.

Is it just us going to places or still in the entourage?

If solo, then go see the Queen.

If still part of the entourage, go see the Patriarch.

"The Church of the Holy Sepulcher," you said, "To visit the Patriarch, William, and pay our respects to the Lord Christ. From there we will go to the Tower of David and greet the Queen."

"Such high placed friends," Unna said wide eyed and impressed.

You grinned. Clucked your tongue to start your horse forward.

Jerusalem was much as you remembered it. Cramped, noisy and stinking. The press of unwashed masses, local and on pilgrimage, did not aid in traveling through the corridors of the city. Pickpockets were about as well, taking what they could.

Sir Paulus beat one boy around the head for trying to steal from the bishop.

You saw some knights of the holy orders. St Lazarus as well as the Hospitallers, and Templars besides. They kept security of the Holy City better than the city guardsmen, but you saw the Templars handle some roughly, and heard a mutter that they were keeping an eye out for secret Jews.

There were no Jews in your company, and you were recognized by many as you rode past.

"Lord Ramla!" a beggar reached up to you and you threw him a pfenning. It did no harm to show small charity.

Unna gawped at the sights, and even your father had to supress a smile that was threatening to open upon his face. You tried to act as if this was all familiar to you, but you were hardly a constant guest of the Holy City.

At the Church your horses were taken by stable grooms and an aide to the Patriarch came to greet you.

"Welcome to our brother, the arch-bishop of Trier," the man said, bowing to the fat bishop, who held out a hand to be kissed. Then the priest bowed to you. "And welcome Lord Ramla. Patriarch William is busy, but will be ready to receive you soon. In the mean time I suggest you wait in the shade."

He offered you the door.

"I will join you in a moment," you tell your companions. You had a friend you wished to visit.

You went to the cemetery. It had many mourners within. Paying respect to their own departed. There was no special place marked for him. No grave stone or marker. But it was to the Church you had left his remains. Sir Welf the Quiet, who had never said much but had always stood beside you. A brave soul cut down by Saracen lance.

Before a marker to some long dead saint you knelt. Hands together. And on that you prayed for him. Hoped that he had achieved the eternal rewards due all good Christian souls.

A pair of children prayed also. Orphans, it turned out, that had lost their parents on the road. If God was good they would find shelter. But in the mean time you left them with money enough for a day or more lodging. It was little, but you think Welf would have done the same. He had been fond of the lost souls of the world.

Unna waited for you by the entrance.

"Come," she offered you her arm, which courtesy demand you take. "I must thank you for taking good care of my Hugo," she said as she led you to the waiting room, "He is fast becoming a man, a good man."

You smile. "He is my brother," it was all that needed to be said really.

She released your arm before you entered. Your father paced the floor waiting for the Patriarch. Sir Paulus sat admiring a fresco upon the wall. The bishop had great patience, and smiled for you.

"Shouldn't be long," you said, "He's a very old man, but spry for his age."

Soon he entered on the arm of a sister of St Anne's. That nun had a hateful eye to you as she settled the old man in a chair. You did not know why.

Patriarch William was as you remembered. Old, with a grandfatherly air. He moistened papery lips. Water and bread was brought for you all, a table placed.
>>

"What brings Trier to Jerusalem?" he asked.

Archbishop Albero inclined his head. "The invitation of a former subject. Lord Ramla thought it prudent to call upon you first before all others. I well liked the idea."

The Patriarch looked to you, eyes suspicious. "Lord Ramla does me great honour," he said. "Have you brought a gift?" he asked of the archbishop.

A vial was presented. "Taken from the Rhine, blessed by me." And a book. "The latest from Lady Hildegard, wise words to offer the world."

"Generous," the Patriarch said, hands covetous upon the book. He had a servant take them away.

They shared a humble meal, talked a little on the gossip from Rome. Complained in near unison about the anti-pope that was such the topic these days. And then on more spiritual matters. It was a long conversation. It was not polite to leave, nor interrupt. The nun that came and went always had a glare for you.

A man came. Talked with the Patriarch.

The Patriarch's eyes widened. "Our queen has come to greet you Lord Bishop," he said. Albero had the grace to appear flattered. Truly he was used to more Imperial company.

Altogether you went forth to meet the Queen upon the steps.

Half the court had come with her. She stood in a dress with the colours of Holy Jerusalem, belly swollen and attended by her sister Hodierna, who held the hand also of little Prince Baldwin. With her also was Princess Alice and her little daughter, who held Baldwin's other hand. William Bures and Pons of Tripoli, but many more nobles you did not recognise by face. You searched those faces for Ioveta, but she was absent.

Melisende smiled and you suspected it was for the father of the child growing in her belly.

"Welcome Arch-Bishop," she said.

"I am feeling most welcome," Albero said, tears standing in his eyes. Your party knelt before the Queen until she had you rise.
>>
She led you back to the palace. The streets cleared by the arm of the royal soldiery to make a procession that was watched by the common riff-raff. Those that did not know you at least recognized you as a figure to respect.

Chambers had been prepared. You had one of your own, nearest to the royal wing. The one you had been given after being freed from the prison. You wondered if that cell was as horrible as your memory made of it. You were in no rush to check.

Not poor but not overly generous, your quarters were comfortable and suitable for a guest of your station. Illusions must be maintained.

Established as you were in the palace, you were left with things to do:

> call in on the queen
> make sure the bishop was well established

To [Ruler of Ascalon + titles]
Let it be known that I Wilhelm Lord of Ramla have come to conquer your city in the name of god praise be he and the kingdom of Jerusalem as ordained by his most holy the pope of Christendom. With me I bring the might and will of the countries of Europe and the determination of our lord and savior Jesus of Nazareth for in his name I shall conquer your city.

I come to you now however to beg for your mercy, not for me or my men as we are strong and our faith in God praise unto he means that we will carry the day in taking your walls and towers and everything therein. Nay I write this letter to beg of you to think of the woman and children inside your walls that are under your care to protect, duty bound as you are by both the oaths of your god and the honor of your word as a mortal man.

So I beg of you surrender your arms, throw open your gates and surrender your city. For if you do not i make this oath to both you as a man and to God glory to he that if you do not ascend to these demands i will take your city by force and I will visit unto it all the horrors that mighty Carthage bore when it was taken by the Romans. None will know that your city ever existed for I will break it down to the foundation stones and then hammer those to dust. To your peoples I will execute every last man who bears arms against us by either fire or crucifixion, I will take every fifth woman and child as a captive, the other four will be thrown from the walls or buried alive. Your old, your sick, and the babies will be left in the desert for god's will to decide what to do with them. Any captured lords will be lashed behind wild horses and dragged until the rope around their feet rots away.

Your daughters, wives and mistresses will be entombed beneath the earth with water and knives for madness and hunger to take them to base cannibalism. Your entire family line will end here and none will speak your name ever again

None will remember the name Ascalon as anything but a warning to others to the might of Christendom. People will curse you most of all [Lords name and title] for i will let it be known throughout the world that you broke your vows before god and man to protect the peoples under your charge from this fate.

I pray that you as a man of faith and as a man of worldly decency will see reason and will throw open your gates and surrender to our holy and righteous army. If you do this I make this holy oath unto god that none of your subjects will be touched and will freely be allowed to leave the city under my protection back unto your own lands. None shall be killed or captured, we will take no prisoners and every soul who calls Ascalon home will be allowed to travel with as much as they can carry from the city.

Common sense would have you call upon the Queen before all else, as your overlord and host, but love had a way of robbing a man of common sense. You were in Jerusalem, and in Jerusalem was your betrothed Ioveta.

You went to the Royal Quarters to call upon her, but you were told by a page that she was absent. Immediately where could not be said. She was the sort to have her on mind on things, the servant grumbled. You released the woman continued your hunt. A girl said she had seen Ioveta by the kitchens, another in the courtyard. You walked the main halls of the Tower of David and swore you would soon know it as well as you did your leg hair.

It turned out, according to a handmaid of the court, that she was not in the palace at all.

She was on the boulevard of the poorest quarter of Jerusalem, distributing bread and water.

You found her there, spied from afar. Her honey gold hair tied back under a scarf, her dress plain. She seemed Judith the Novice rather than a Princess of Jerusalem. She spoke with some hungry young creature as she gave him a loaf, slapping away the hand of a would be pickpocket. She was not alone, she had guards. Old Theodore of Armenia and a man of mid-thirties, a couple of others. And other women were helping her under her direction, nuns and court ladies.

She filled a cup for an old leper. Her cheeks were red and sweat as on her face. She washed it off on the back of her hand, took a breath and got back to work.

Even dressed so modestly, and spied from a distance she was beautiful.

You joined the bread line.

"You get one loaf of bread and one jug of water. Come back tomorrow if you want more. We will be here until the end of the week." She did not look up.

"I'll have a princess instead thanks," you said.
>>
>>41109407

No letters. Captured soldiers as messengers. Once we have breeched the walls.
>>
Her eyes darted up. Then widened. Her mouth dropped open and a blush came upon her face. You grinned.

And she flew across the table into your arms, a single cry of 'Wilhelm!' ringing out.

You laughed as she dangled from your shoulders, turned and spun her before the crowd.

She pulled her head back and looked you into the eyes. She smiled and it was like the sun upon your face.

You began with 'You look-' but she ended it with a kiss. A long drawn, deep kiss before the entire crowd.

You didn't care who saw, pulling the girl tight against you.

Iovetta really deserves better than Wilhelm.

It is gonna fuck us in the ass. I just know it. We should had been more subtle. We could just had waited a few hours when she returned and we could talk to her in private ?
>>
I'd run longer but we're skating on thin ice on page 10.

Depending if my girl comes around we might have a second thread.

>>41109502
The vote was to see her right away. Hell or high water.
>>
Kek you guys really thought it would be good to see her before the queen
>>
>>41109453

So, the usual question...

Did we fuck up?

Would going for a drink with the boys reduce or chances of having Sabeen come with us?
The Hugh bit you are probably not going to give spoilers, but would it be bad to tell?
Is the queen mad at us?

>>41109478

>>

No, she would have found you all the same, but the interactions would have been different.

> The Hugh bit you are probably not going to give spoilers, but would it be bad to tell?
There would be consequences, its whether or not you're willing to live with those consequences that is the main question.

There will always be consequences for every road taken or not taken.
