Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you sparred with a friend, took a bath, dealt with fallout, and called a meeting.

It is currently the 14th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

Your slaves bring out plates of food for your companions who haven't already eaten, namely Mortia, Darzi, Profectus, and Tertia. As they begin to eat you clear your throat to get everyone's attention. “Now then, on the topic of our destination. As I mentioned, I have been rethinking my decision to lead us into the Pa'vala.” You pause, rubbing your eyes wearily. “Thus, I pose to you all a question. Where shall we journey? To the harsh deserts of the Pa'vala and the warped ruins within? To the untamed jungles of Elaudia and the mysteries beyond? It would hardly seem fair to drag you along to one of the most dangerous places in the world without first consulting you.”

Profectus nudges Tertia with his elbow. “I hadn't really thought much about it,” He begins. “-but based on Tertia's stories Elaudia isn't all that bad. Plenty of food according to her, if you can put up with all the various and manifold creatures trying to eat you. She ranges that way to escape the cold during particularly bad winters up in the mountains, or she did at least. The heat is apparently sweltering year around.”

Tertia sits up a little straighter as the group looks to her. “There are innumerable plants which host fruiting bodies year around, and most of them aren't poisonous. I can generally pick out those that are but I've never ranged very far into the jungle. I mostly stuck to the very northern edge, near the foothills of the mountains. When traveling Elaudia you absolutely must lookout for wildlife. I've yet to see a single creature that wasn't some sort of nightmarish abomination emerge from those jungles.”

Darzi politely covers her mouth while she finishes chewing a piece of flat bread smeared with humus. She washes it down with a brief sip of tea before speaking. “I would propose that we stick to the original plan, that is to say we journey first to the Pa'vala. I do appreciate you posing the question, Mikhael, but we need to free your mind from the burden of the Entity lest it grow powerful enough to actually overtly influence your thoughts and actions.”

Skull Kid shrugs his shoulders. “I mean, I don't know. I don't imagine I'll join you to be honest. I've kind of got a lot of stuff going on here, what with my efforts to improve the city's defenses and the water purification facilities. Plus I think I might be getting the entire city piped fresh, clean water once the plant is finished which would entail tearing up a whole swathe of the city to lay pipes. I'll probably update the plumbing in the Vatis District too. Supposedly they're enchanted or something but fuck that, man. They're a thousand years old. It's about time somebody inspected them, y'know?”

You don't know, you'd think that if they're enchanted as you imagine they would be they'll probably outlast the city itself, but whatever. You suppose Skull Kid is simply abstaining, or doesn't care where the party goes. Perhaps you should first decide just who you're bringing along?

Fulvia, shifts slightly in her seat, clearing her throat. It's odd, considering she doesn't actually have a throat to clear. “I think that we ought first journey to the Pa'vala. Exploring the ruins of Hiacia would offer you a priceless glimpse into the only civilization to successfully resist the might of Rhynia. A glimpse which could be later used to advance your own goals. That aside, a commanding officer must be free of outside influences if he is to lead successfully.”

Only Chryssa and Mortia have yet to speak and Mortia is currently half asleep cradling a cup of coffee like it's some sort of cherished heirloom. Chryssa seems preoccupied by other matters, her eyes focused on a blank space of wall, but she snaps out of her trance when Profectus nudges her. She glances around the table before speaking. “I think we ought to go to Elaudia. Retrieving the recipe for Elaudian steel and getting that ring as a reward would significantly aide later attempts to explore the Pa'vala.”

Mortia lurches forward, struggling into a properly upright position rather than slouched over in her chair. She yawns wide, smacking her lips and setting aside her coffee before voicing her thoughts on the matter. “I'm sorta with SK on this. I mean, I'unno. I'm probably not coming along. Well, I might join you if you go to Elaudia. I've always wanted to see a jungle. Probably lots of-” She waves a hand searchingly through the air. “-plants and such, for me to collect. So yeah. Go to Elaudia.”

It seems that your companions favor journeying to Elaudia rather than the Pa'vala. However, you're not really sure if you should count Tertia amongst your companions. So far as you recall, she's not much for the adventuring life and in fact refused to journey with you to El-Amin, citing that she'd rather remain in the mountains. You really do wonder how Profectus managed to convince her to join you.

You're also not wholly certain whether Mortia's vote ought to counted considering she's not even sure that she's going to join you. She certainly won't be traveling with you if you go to the Pa'vala, and she doesn't seem crazy about the idea of traveling to Elaudia either. Were you to discount their votes, you'd be tied with two in favor of Elaudia and two in favor of the Pa'vala, with your vote deciding the matter.

You'd really rather go to Elaudia, and the majority seem to be in agreement, but you don't want to just declare that majority rules. Doing so runs the risk of fomenting resentment in Darzi, at the very least. You doubt Fulvia would particularly care since she does view you as her commanding officer after all.

You channel a bit of Fire magic, the light twisting to suit your wills. To all the world it appears as though a rainforest sprouts from the tabletop, stretching from one end to the other and complete with little colorful birds flitting between the tree tops and little furry creatures scurrying through the underbrush. You even create little rain clouds floating above, drizzling a steady stream of water onto the plantlife below. All illusory of course.

Mortia in particular seems surprised by the little display, practically throwing herself backwards as plants sprout in front of her. She very nearly topples out of her chair. You don't pay her any mind. “Come now, Darzi. Doesn't exploring the vast unknown sound more fun? Besides, I've heard from a reliable source that there's a suit of armor crafted by Dhatu himself, the ancient god who's domain includes Metal magic, lying in a temple somewhere within.”

Darzi smiles sardonically. “I never really took you to be the sort who goes chasing after fairy tales, Mikhael. What makes you think it isn't just some local superstition, or worse? For all we know it's just some legend which got spread around and exaggerated in successive retellings.”

You shrug your shoulders. “What can I say? From my own personal experiences with the relics left by Dhatu's worshipers they certainly seem skilled in the finer points of Metal magic. If they can make ink which dances off of the page as soon as even the slightest amount of vys is channeled into it I can certainly believe that they can make a suit of armor worthy of the gods with Elaudian steel and some minor enchantment. Were you not nigh invincible in the Elaudian armor you wore within the Mines of Longia?”

She rubs her chin contemplatively. “I suppose you do have a point, but what about you Mikhael? I don't want to let the Entity fester in the back of your mind like rot in a wound while we all go tromping off through the jungle in search of goodies and loot.”

You reach into your cloak, extracting the Hiacian signet ring which you had enchanted to restore your sanity, slowly but surely. “I bartered for this from a spirit which Varistha Sehazade owed his long life to. It ensures that, so long as I wear it, I'll remain sane. Barring my own idiocy or extenuating circumstances of course. The only reason I don't wear it now is because I feel myself again, and don't wish to risk losing certain abilities I've grown accustomed to.”

You slip the ring back into your cloak, and Darzi sighs. “Fine, then. I suppose we can delay our trip into the Pa'vala if you are truly set on first journeying to Elaudia. Chrys raised a good point anyone, regarding the ring we're to get as a reward. It will prove incredibly useful for finding what we seek in the desert.”

Just to clarify, you got the sanity ring from The Deathless, essentially a bureaucrat of the void who sifts through the possessions of any and all who die within the void. It was a reward for 'killing' the Shah.

Now that you've resolved what your destination is going to be, you dispel the illusory landscape you crafted on top of the table with a wave of your hand. “That aside, who will be joining me on this little expedition of ours? I will be giving you all two days, or three if you count this one I suppose, to resolve any matters you must attend to in the city. After that we will be setting off. Let's go by a show of hands.”

Much as you expect Chryssa, Profectus, Fulvia, and Darzi volunteer immediately. It will be nice, to have just your 'original' group together again. Well, plus Darzi you suppose. She was sort of a late addition, but you've really grown to enjoy her company. Mortia seems to debate internally for a time before hesitantly raising her hand as well, as though she's not certain whether she should really be doing so.

That leaves only Skull Kid and Tertia with their hands down. Skull Kid merely shrugs his shoulders, he's already voiced his reasons for not wishing to tag along, but Tertia seems to feel the need to explain herself. “I've never wanted to be an adventurer, nor do I plan on changing my mind now. Though I wish you the best of luck I'll be staying here.”

If she's going to be living on your estate you can't help but feel that she ought to make herself useful. Since she's not going to go adventuring, you're forced to wonder what she intends to do. Perhaps she could serve as the Captain of your personal guard? Speaking of, you still need to determine what you're going to be doing with the contingent of Abdul-Hakim guards that your father has sent you... well, whatever. You can deal with later.

“Wonderful. I'm pleased to inform you as well that Zahak will be joining us. He's grown large enough now that he can carry me, and more than likely any of you, on his back while he flies. I've also seen his talents put to use in combat first hand. I feel he'll prove an invaluable companion in the coming trials we'll face. Does anyone else have any questions or concerns relating to the party as a whole?”

You're met with silence, so you decide to simply call an end to the meeting. “Wonderful. Well then, if that's all I leave you to your own devices. We'll leave on the sixteenth of Svarthi, two days from now.”

Skull Kid and Fulvia stand almost simultaneously, both excusing themselves before presumably heading for the tower and Skull Kid's workshop. Darzi leaves as well a moment later, whether to join them or to change out of her burned clothes you can't be certain. Chryssa follows after Darzi, her intentions unclear. That leaves yourself, Mortia, Profectus, and Tertia.

You've got a lot you need to deal with and not all that much time to deal with it. Thus, you decide to get started immediately. A gesture brings one of your slaves to your side, a young elven woman. She bows low as she comes to stand next to you, though you pay her little mind. “Have some space cleared in the armory and six or so beds laid out, along with chest and other accouterments one might find in a barracks. I'm going to be having my family guards staying there instead of forcing them to commute back and forth between my family estate and here.”

The slave nods and vanishes a moment later to see your orders carried out. You turn your attention to Tertia, leaning forward to rest your elbows on the table. “So, since you're not going to be joining me on my trip to Elaudia I must ask, would you be willing to perform some sort of domestic duty? Perhaps serve as the captain of the guard, or as a cook, or help clean up. Do you have any talents you might put to use to earn a wage?”

She sits up a straighter, swallowing a bite of sausage before she speaks. “I'm good in a fight, I've killed all manner of vile beast which tend to lurk in the high mountains. Gargoyles, prowlers, griffins, you name it. So I could probably serve well as the captain of your guard. I can also knit, and I'm a pretty good hunter.”

Neither knitting nor hunting are particularly profitable professions, thus your options are limited. “Very well, start practicing with my family guard. If you can earn their respect, I'll trust you to keep my estate and those who dwell within it safe.”

Profectus promises to help her if she needs any, but she staunchly refuses. You've already turned your attention to the next matter which needs to be resolved. “Mortia, when you finish eating you would mind speaking with me in private?”

(1/3)
>>
She looks up from her meal, her expression confused. Then realization seems to dawn on her and her cheeks flush red. She doesn't speak, simply nodding her head in response before turning her attention quickly to her food again. You kick back and relax for a time, making light conversation with Profectus and Tertia. You think Prof is excited to be journeying into Elaudia. Apparently he'd heard a lot about it, when he was a soldier. Not much that he can remember, he just sort of has a vague sense that it was an interesting place. He recalls that it was once controlled by a single, vast empire to rival Hiacia and Rhynia, which unfortunately collapsed.

Mortia is the last to finish her meal. Once she pushes her plate away you stand, and she follows suit. She clears her throat uncomfortably, obviously nervous when she speaks. “Let's go to my laboratory. We can talk there.”

You don't get what she's so nervous about, you just want to apologize for providing a far too graphic glimpse into your private life. Regardless you gesture for her to lead the way and she complies, setting off up the stairs with you in tow. Getting through the gardens seems a task easier said than done. She stops every few feet to inspect one plant or another. At one point she notices that the petals of a large plant with some sort of bulbous, semi-gelatinous orb dangling off the tip have started to brown and spend a solid ten minutes chewing out one of your slaves for negligence, before snatching away a spray bottle and carefully tending to the massive plant.

Finally you reach her laboratory in the basement of the tower, her with a bundle of plant clippings under one arm, and while she sets about inspecting some of the various creatures she keeps caged on one end of the room you launch into your apology. “Mortia, about what you saw a few nights ago-”

(2/3)
>>
“L-listen, Mik-” She cuts you off, gently setting down her bundle of clippings on the table in the center of the room. The entire place smells acrid and sharp, just being down here makes your eyes water. “You don't need to explain yourself to me. I-it's just that, well... I was a little surprised, that's all.”

She seems nervous, judging not only from her stutter but her general demeanor. Her face practically burns red and she's carefully avoiding eye contact. “Someone who's just 'a little surprised' as you put it doesn't sit through six hours-”

She jerks her head up, looking at you in wide-eyed panic. “How did you know I watched-” She stops herself, biting her lip. “It's just that I was curious! I didn't even know what you were doing at first, so I wanted to figure it out. I mean, eventually I figured out that you just... well, you clearly don't do things like we humans do.”

You raise an eyebrow suspiciously. Last you checked, the various sapient races all pretty much fucked the same way. Not that you've much experience, and what little experience you do have you deeply regret, but you can safely conclude that you're not the weird one in this conversation. Just what did her mother tell her about sex?

You lean back against the wall, folding your arms in front of your chest. “Actually, the way Samjan, Humans, and Elves 'do things' is more or less the same across the board. How on Earth else would two people have sex? It's not exactly a complicated process and it certainly seems to work.”

(3/4)
>>
Mortia's staring adamantly at the bundle of plant clippings in front of her, fiddling with the petals of a poppy flower. “W-well, umm-” She sighs, casting a frustrated look off to the side. “She said that boys contain within them the seed of life, and that when the time came I would need to capture one extract it from him. Then there is a ritual to perform which induces fertility, in which the seed plays a key role. That's all she told me. She said she'd tell me more when I was older but she never did.”

That's adorably misguided, no wonder your Master couldn't get in her pants.

Are you really going to be the one who has to have this talk with her? She's a full grown woman! Hell, you're not actually certain she isn't older than you are. She's got a few grey hairs, even if she does look to be in her early twenties. With a defeated sigh you push yourself off the wall and cross the room to stand on the opposite side of the work table at the center, Mortia fidgeting nervously.

You hold up your hands, begging pause. “Allow me to explain, Mortia. You've clearly been misinformed. While I've no doubt your method would result in a child, it's not how most people go about things. Frankly, it sounds painful.”

Mortia interrupts. “Oh, and your method doesn't? I saw what you were doing to that woman! That looked horribly painful for the poor girl! You were stabbing her in the crotch, and there was fire, and that white stuff got absolutely everywhere! It looked painful, and messy, and... and just wholly unpleasant!”

She huffs, blowing a length of hair out of her face. You just chuckle. “Well, okay. That wasn't wholly usual. Magic was involved, and you know with magic things just tend to escalate... well, anyway. You'll just have to take my word for it that usually sex feels wonderful for both parties. That's why so many people spend their entire lives desperately seeking it out.”

She refuses to look at you, but eventually her curiosity seems to get the better of her. “So how does it work exactly? I mean, you stab that... thing into her crotch until stuff comes out but I don't see how that would produce a child. You didn't even sacrifice any animals to your gods, or ingest anything to induce fertility.”

(1/3) Still writing for going to see SK and Fulvia, but I'll go ahead and post this.
>>
What is she talking about, sacrifice and ingesting things? “Look, this isn't nearly as complicated as you're trying to make it. Your mother was right about one thing, a man must plant his seed inside of a woman to produce a child. However, you don't need to knock them unconscious and drag them through the woods to make it happen. Nor must you 'extract it', whatever that entails.”

She opens her mouth to speak but you cut her off with a sharp gesture. “All you have to do to produce a child is let a man, preferably a human man, lay with you. That 'thing' you refer to is called a penis, amongst other things, and though it can be shoved into a wide variety of locales it's most often shoved into a woman's vagina. That's what the hole you have between your legs is called, a vagina.”

If Mortia wasn't blushing before she is now, though she's hidden her face behind her hands so you can't really see. She turns away from you sharply, and for a moment you think you've offended her, but finally she responds. “S-so, a man takes his p-penis and shoves it into my... vagina until that stuff comes out. It just all seems so terribly violent.”

You sigh in relief. “Yes, that's generally how things work. How did you not manage to figure this out from watching... I don't know, animals or something?”

“I thought animals were just different, or something! Less sophisticated! That's what my mother said!” She responds defensively. You're about to excuse yourself but she carries on before you can get a word in. “Does... does it have to be another human? You said everyone does it more or less the same, right? Not that I'm interested in doing that! I'm just curious, it's for science!”

>You didn't even sacrifice any animals to your gods, or ingest anything to induce fertility.”

You roll your eyes. “No, it doesn't have to be a human. Samjan, elves, and humans are all physically capable of interbreeding. Cultural mores generally prevent Samjan from mingling with either humans or elves but humans and elves mix quite frequently. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if Profectus and Tertia ended up producing some sort of half breed.” Pani's tits, you hope they're using condoms. The last thing you want is a little kid running around your house. Let alone a little half-breed whelp. “Now, if you'll excuse me I've other things to attend to.”

You make for the stairs, eager to extricate yourself from this unbearable situation. When you finally emerge from the cellar into the training yard above you take a deep breath of fresh air, glad to be free of that harsh, all-pervading, acidic stench. You take a moment to rub at your eyes until they stop burning and then scale the spiral staircase which stretches around the tower wall up to Skull Kid's workshop.

You march through the storage room, the studio, the armory, and finally up to the workshop at the very top of the tower. All manner of projects lay scattered about the place haphazardly, a grated window looking out over the ocean. Most of the room is dominated by crates of glorified scrap metal, old broken pieces of enchanted equipment that Skull Kid seems to have been experimenting with.

The man himself is wearing a sort of half-plate armor. It's a cuirass, pauldron, and gauntlet all bound together by metal rods and some sort of padding, insulation you think Skull Kid had called it. The gauntlet you recognize, it's the same gauntlet he used to shoot waves of Vys that he crafted in the Temple to Pani. However, the pauldron and cuirass are new. Both clash terribly with one another, the whole ensemble just appears as a chaotic jumble of bits and pieces of other armors.

As you watch, he presses his hand against his chest and clenches his fist. A metal shield which had been protecting the gem which powers his gauntlet slides open, revealing the black void which absorbs vys. The air around him seems to shimmer and he nods his head, which Fulvia seems to take as a sign that she ought to swing her gladius at the man. You flinch as the blade approaches, half expecting him to get a giant gash opened in his arm, but instead the very moment the sword touches his skin it's blown out of Fulvia's hand by a powerful blast of vys.

Skull Kid opens his hand, the shield sliding back over the gem. The air around him stops shimmering a moment later. He spends a moment inspecting the area where Fulvia's sword struck, while Fulvia retrieves her blade. After a time he nods. “I think we've got it, it was definitely that faulty wire that was causing the shield to fail. Now we just need to find-”

That should be Chrys or mik, Chrys because stronk, mik because self heals and a God given ability to piss off the enemy and draw their attention, also the healers first goal is to keep the party safe, being the tank helps with that.

Chrys is ranged, even if she can do well in a melee. Don't forget that Darzi also has decent skill as a Water Vatis and with that armor on can easily take bullets to the chest and not even notice. Her and Prof make up the front lines with us and Chrys working in the mid field. Mortia is probably best suited for support. We should probably lend her some of our effect books to study up on as well. Fulvia is a good all arounder thanks to magic + robot.

Reminder lads. Vys saturation is specifically mentioned as the main obstacle to people using the Heavy Warlock Armor.

>>36092957
Vys Theory, Poison? Radiation?: Vys, the Varistha argues, is a type of poison, and just like poison one may build of a tolerance for it. As evidence for this he provides the Warlock Armor. When worn by those with a relatively low tolerance for extended periods of time, their bodies are wracked by discomfort and disease, exhaustion and lethargy. He even reports that some have died or committed suicide while suffering from an overabundant supply of vys, while at the same time remarking that such an overabundance can become addicting.

Vys saturation occurs when our reserves are full but we keep getting inundated with it. The only time we have ever suffered Vys saturation is with the Warlock armor on for an entire night when we were unready *and* on meditation poultice. With the cat's ring to eat vys overflow, we can use the tier 1, endgame armor with no ill repercussions.

water is magic sight, but you are right about metal being reinforce.
>>
>>41103246
Dude, it's not. Sight is pure vys into the helmet

Sehzade’s Notes, Warlock Armor: The only element he's left off is Metal, though there's an underlined note in the top corner that simply reads 'Metal = Reinforce'.
You look first at the helmet, which according to the notes unlocks 'The Sight' when pure vys is channeled into it. When Water magic is used instead, it results in the ability to breath underwater just as one would on land. Fire results in immunity to poisonous or otherwise unpleasant air of any sort. Nature allows one to 'access surface thoughts: tricky'. At least, that's the way the Varistha put it. You wish he'd expounded a bit further on what 'tricky' entails. Finally, Earth allows one to see through solid objects as if they simply did not exist. The torso seems to mostly have enchantments related to physical abilities. Raw vys will enhance all of your physical abilities to some extent. Fire will enhance your strength and speed, at the expense of stamina and mental coherence. Water will allow you to more easily bend and flow around attacks, but seems to detriment one's strength and physical toughness. Earth is the opposite, it allows one to whether even the most powerful of blows, but you'll be hard pressed to move an inch while channeling Earth magic. Nature doesn't seem to do anything, unfortunately.
The boots seem to have paired enchantments, a note in the margins mentions that you can't channel vys into one boot without channeling it into the other as well. The gauntlets and pauldrons are likewise paired. The enchantments for both are fairly similar, the only difference being the delivery of the attack. Channeling fire will wreath either your boots or gauntlets in flame. Channeling water will freeze whatever you strike. Channeling Earth will rapidly erode whatever it is you touch. Channeling Nature allows you to more easily manipulate the movements of plantlife

You shrug. “Don't worry about it, to be honest I think bringing everyone along on this trip would be foolhardy. I mean, the more people I bring the more people need to be fed, the more people need to be looked after, the more people I put at risk of dying on the journey. As is, I'm already worried we might lose someone in that forsaken jungle.”

You wave a hand as if to clear the air. “Anyway, that's not what I came here for. How are things Skull Kid, or is it Thaddeus now? How go your various projects, both personal and otherwise.”

He reaches up and depresses a button on his neck, the helmet popping open with a hiss of compressed air. He pushes the helmet up, revealing his eyeless sockets. Wires seem to spew from the twin gaping holes, connecting to the various camera feeds in his helmet. “Things are going well, I've got no complaints. The Shah has proven quite accommodating when it comes to hours and such. My input in the water plant at this point is minimal, it's mostly on your father to get things built to my specifications.”

He blows out a sigh, stuffing his hands into the pockets of his baggy pants. “As for the wall, well. You simply don't have the stores of gunpowder for the number of cannons I wish to produce but the Shah assures me that work is underway to correct this error. I'm trying to get my hands on sulfuric acid and nitric acid, I've been talking to Mortia about that actually. She says if I can figure out a source for both she can make me nitrocellulose.”

(1/4)
>>
When it's clear you have no idea what he's talking about he sighs. “Right, umm... it's basically boiled cotton soaked in sulfuric and nitric acid and then cooled to the freezing temperature of water. It's really dangerous to store and use, but it's intrinsic in the production of smokeless gunpowder and it's way more powerful than black powder. It'll actually just burst into flame if you expose it to air. You get rid of the extra acid by draining the guncotton and washing it with water, then shoot pressurized alcohol to get rid of any water. Then you shove it through a funnel and cut it up.”

He seems to review what he's said in his head before nodding. “Yeah, that's the gist of it. The deal with black powder is that it produces a literal fuckton of smoke.” You're not familiar with the unit of measurement 'fuckton', but you suppose that's some sort of slang for large quantities of a substance. “It tends to make it really hard to see shit on the battlefield, which led to armies forming massed ranks of soldiers and basically just shooting each other in the face from ten feet away. This will make guerrilla warfare way more practical. Your people seem the sort who'd be into that kinda thing.”

You sort of just nod along until he finishes talking, at which point you cut in. “That sounds great, Skull Kid. Hit and run tactics are a favorite of ours. Anyway, do you need any help with any of that? How's my father treating you? Well, I hope.”

He sits down on a bench at one end of his workshop. “I think I've got everything handled, but thanks Mik. I mostly have Fulvia or Prema do the shopping so I've got pretty much everything I need. Your father's been a great business partner, though I've got to say he's a bit greedy. All about when we're going to start making money. He actually proposed charging each and every citizen in the city a fee to connect their home to the waterline, but I told him that wouldn't be practical. Better to just get paid by the Shah, y'know?”

(2/4)
>>
You don't know, a small fee seems perfectly reasonable to you. “What about the Shah, what's it like working with the man? I hope he's not the ineffectual idiot I expected him to be as a ruler.”

Thaddeus blows out a contemplative sigh. “I mean, I'm not really much for politics. To me it seems like the Shah doesn't really make that many decisions. He's got his advisors who handle shit for him, y'know? I suppose in it's own way that's wisdom. Knowing you're in over your head so surrounding yourself with advisors who know their shit. He's also young, isn't he? Probably still learning.”

That's about what you expected from Kadir, that he'd serve as essentially a figurehead for his advisors until he learns how to properly rule. To be honest, you're glad that's the way things have turned out. “And your personal projects? What is it that your armor does?”

He perks up, slapping his hand against his cuirass. “Ah! This baby? I'm still working out the kinks but it projects a force field around me that blocks attacks. Pretty useful! Of course, my gauntlet powers everything but I can still use it to shoot blast of vys and all that.” He clasp his hand, a violent hum filling the air as the gem starts to suck in vys. When he braces his fist against his chest the air shimmers around him, just as before. “Try throwing some fire my way.”

You see no reason not to, so you channel a little magic and shoot a jet of flame from the tip of your finger. It engulfs Skull Kid, roiling around him angrily, however when the flames dissipate Skull Kid is revealed to be entirely unharmed. Not even slightly scorched. He releases his fist and the shimmering vanishes. You must say, you're impressed. “I admit, that seems quite useful. I'm glad you've managed to find a niche that works for you. Are you working on anything else at the moment?”

(3/4)
>>
He sort of gestures vaguely about the room. “All sorts of stuff, but not really with any level of dedication. They're side projects while I oversee the construction of the purification plant and the outer walls. I'm also helping with the design of the fortress, and with city planning as well. You've got more than enough space to house everyone in the city, I don't know why your homeless population is so large.”

You remove your cloak, laying it out on the ground. “Well, I'm glad to hear everything is going well. As a little thank you, I've got a present from Anthus.”

You pick up your cloak, the base of the dragon tail sitting on the floor. You start to back away, winding the tail in on itself so it'll fit in the room. It's a solid forty feet long, and as thick around as your cloak at the base. It's huge, really. Covered in dozens are scales. Skull Kid seems speechless, where as Fulvia just starts cackling. “Yes! Yes, my Dux! This is perfect, exactly what we needed! Oh, the experiments we'll be able to do!”

I think I can just safely assume that you're spending 3 vys for a success, here. Unlike meditation, I'm going to say you can actually critically succeed/critically fail an experiment.

I just thought of something absolutely hilarious. Chryssa would be an enchanting prodigy. She has a mask that only works for her that magnifies her vision to phenomenal levels. She has complete control of all her muscles, and so can be immensely precise. She's been designed from the bottom up to learn magic. And she's ever so slightly insane, for that last little bit of leverage.

You lay your cloak out on the ground once more and pull it away, a half dozen corrupted dragon corpses spilling out. These are the ones you paralyzed in the plains to the west of Khmedi, who were chasing Aylin. They've long since died, suffocated in the airless pit that is the void. If Fulvia was excited before, she's ecstatic now. She squeals like a giddy little apprentice just after earning their Vatis robes. This is perhaps the first time you've ever seen her show what you would call genuine emotion.

You're excuse yourself politely while Fulvia starts dragging one of the corpses off of the pile with the sort of enthusiasm only a scientist can have. You leave them to their work, wandering downstairs and through the gardens back to the main body of the estate. You note that your slaves are hard at work clearing out the armory when you pass by, and a few beds have already been set up in the cleared space.

Prema greets you as you enter the upstairs hall. She smiles when she sees you, a sealed wooden tube clutched in one hand and a sack of gold in the other. She offers the gold first. “A hundred and sixty gold, for a total of two thousand four hundred silver.” Next, she presents the sealed tube. “A map from Ancient Hiacia, as detailed as any. It cost quite a lot but I managed to negotiate the price down to a level that we could easily afford using only household funds. The rations and water barrels are being stored in the servant's passages. I hope you're pleased, Master.”

You take the sack of hold, digging out five gold coins and pressing them into Prema's hand before tossing the sack into your cloak and taking the scroll tube. “Quite pleased, Prema. Quite pleased indeed. If what you say is true, you've done better than I expected. Sadly I'll not be getting use out of the map immediately, as I've opted instead to journey into Elaudia. However, the rations and water will no doubt still see some use.”
>New Wealth: 16799 silver (991gp, 1934sp); Extremely wealthy, nothing is beyond your price range.

You dismiss her with a wave and she scurries off. That matter taken care of you head off to your bedroom, slipping inside before you can be further distracted. It's almost a relief to be alone again, you forgot how hectic life at your estate could be. Only once the door is closed and locked do you finally relax, making your way into the center of the room and assuming a meditative pose.

You debate for a time on what you want to meditate on, but opt for something a little irregular. You recall your Master could shoot lightning, despite not being a Grandmaster Fire Vatis. He explained that he wasn't even properly using Fire magic, but rather he was using ambient vys to generate a charge and then releasing it to shoot a bolt of lightning. You decide you'll attempt something similar.

You reach into your cloak and dump vys into your ruby pendant before slipping into a trance and feeling out the ambient vys around you. As expected, your room is absolutely saturated with vys. This fact in addition to your own increased understanding of manipulating vys allows you to quickly refill your reserves.

Once you no longer feel so horribly drained you start to gather vys, letting it collect in front of you. The process of getting it to move around rapidly, as your Master stipulated it must, is a little more difficult. In the end you figure out that just channeling Fire magic into the gathered ambient vys gets it to start twisting in on itself. Watching the substance is like watching a man trying to fight himself. Tendrils lash out all around, jets of vys escaping even as more fills its place.

You let it build up slowly, until you start to notice a steady hum in the background of your thoughts. Your eyes snap open as you realize it's from an outside source, and that momentary lapse in focus is all that was needed for you to lose your grip on the ambient vys entirely. A bolt of sold white shoots out from a space just in front of your chest, impacting against the wooden door to your room with a thunderous crash.

You have to shield your eyes from the sudden flash of light, the bolt of lighting traveled almost too fast for the eye to see, but its effect is unquestionable. A hole has been blasted in your door roughly the size of your head, straight through. It sent splinters flying through the hallway beyond. It's a miracle that nobody seemed to have been hurt, but it's a shame you'll need to have your door replaced.

Regardless, you seem to have figured it out. You resolve to try again, this time without blowing anything up. Just to be certain. Holding out your hand you channel vys into a manipulate spell, drawing ambient vys from your surroundings and letting it gather between your fingers. As you channel Fire magic into the gathered vys you start to notice a purple glow surrounding your fingers, seeming to shimmer at the edge of your hand.

You bring your fingers together, lightning starting to play between your fingers as you bring them closer together and even arc out to strike the floor and the various decorations which populate your room. As you bring your fingers fully together the glowing halo forms into a thin line of solid fire extending from the tips of your fingers. When you focus, you're able to extend this into a sort of glowing blade. You can get it up to about two feet long pretty easy, and with a little effort you imagine it could grow even longer.

You walk up to your now ruined door and try to push the blade into the wood. Smoke and flame pour from the gash you carve into the door, a hiss filling the air as you cut out a jagged triangle. When you finally relax your focus the vys discharges, but not as spectacularly as it did the first time. Rather it's like a thousand little arcs of lightning branching off of your hand like the branches of some sort of perverse tree.

A glance towards your window reveals that night's fallen, that meditation took longer than you'd thought.

>Enough time has passed, you ought to heal your tattoos.
>Go talk to your master, he's probably still awake.
