Your name is Sierra Beckhoff, and you are hellborn – part mortal, part demon. You you are travelling cross country on the ultimate road trip with your friends to gain power, zany antics, and wings. Also, you’ll check out a rumor about an old storage locker that belonged to your dad. You will not be denied.

You are on the road heading northwest to the Pacific coast, where you’ll turn up toward Eureka, sequoia forests, and eventually Canada. It’s late and your friend Moriah is driving, but something is not quite right.

--

What does ‘We need to stop’ even mean? Stop the roadtrip or stop hunting landwells or stop being friends or just stop being in general?

You hold out for the possibility she’s just talking about stopping the car. “Sure, just pull over anyplace,” you say, pointing off to the side of the road.
>>
>>41093641

Moriah is not mollified. “I’m not talking about the car,” she says, her voice even.

“Well then what are you talking about?” you ask, making sure to keep your voice down to avoid waking anybody in the vehicle. “You know I’m not good with all the subtle hints or whatever. Can’t you just... speak words I understand?”

“I’m talking about you claiming landwells,” she says. “It needs to stop.”

>I want more wells. I want wings. I want crazy powers and magic and stuff. And I want to roadtrip. This means a lot to me, so you’re going to need a better reason than ‘just because’.
>You’ve been on board with this thing for months. You said, your words, that I’ll need a whole lot more power if I’m ever going to do the stuff I’m supposed to do.
>It’s not dangerous. I’ve run into landmasters before, it’s not like they’re crazy. They just want to be left alone. And what happened last night is a joke compared to stuff I’ve gone through.
>Is this actually about landwells? I mean, if this is actually about something else, like you know somebody’s hunting me or whatever, we need to talk about that.

I'm guessing our new trait is what's freaking Mori out.

We probably got some sort of spooky death or ghost power and now she's scared and thinks things are getting to dangerous.

Also Sierra more badass and cool and less teary (that's not badass and cool)

This doesn’t make any sense. Moriah’s always been pushing you to do something like this.

“You’ve been on board with this thing for months,” you say. “You said, your words, that I’ll need a whole lot more power if I’m ever going to do the stuff I’m supposed to do.”

Moriah presses her lips into a thin line. “I made a mistake,” she says.

You get a feeling that what’s bothering her has nothing to do with your road trip.

“Is this actually about landwells? I mean, if this is actually about something else,” you tell her, “like you know somebody’s hunting me or whatever, we need to talk about that.” You hate it when people dance around the real problem or pretend it’s not even there.

She doesn’t know how to respond to that for a minute – you just let her stew. She needs time with stuff, sometimes. Eventually, she replies, saying, “I know what happened on Halloween.”

You get a cold feeling in your stomach, and you find it difficult to keep your mind from wandering. You see blood and fire, and you stare at a point outside the window to burn the memories out of your head. (+5 Stress: 20; -2 Sanity: 93)

>What?
>Oh.
>Let’s don’t talk about that.

“This has nothing to do with my brother,” says Moriah.

“No, of course not,” you say reflexively.

Moriah glances at you.

“Not... that much,” you amend. “Things are different now. That’s why I need to do this, so I can keep it all under control.”

“That’s not what I mean,” says Moriah.

“I know what you mean,” you say firmly. “You... you’re just scared if it happens if I have more power.”

“I’m not afraid of you,” she says. “I don’t... blame you for anything. But my father and Isaac... it wasn’t easy for them to keep what happened a secret. I’m glad they did, and I’m glad everything turned out okay, but they’re not in charge of everything. You’re not perfect. Nobody is.” She pauses for a second. “If you lost control again with that kind of power... people would know.”

“What do you want me to do, then?” you ask. “Even if I just sat around, people aren’t going to leave me alone. I already have random demons sending me sketchy offers or trying to kill me.”

“I don’t want you to be powerless,” says Moriah, “but you can take it slower. Focus on control. We’re only eighteen. Ten years, twenty years, a hundred years is just a blink in Halth. Your grand destiny or however you think of it can wait.”

“In my experience, a whole lot more power would go a lot further in getting me out of trouble than meditation crap,” you say. “Not that I’m not working on control too – Cass and Ranthix are teaching me things. A year or two from now, control won’t even be an issue.”

Moriah takes a deep breath. “You’re incredibly powerful already,” she says. “And after this trip, if we go through with it, you’ll be so much more than that, even.” She glances carefully at you. “But there will always be things out there more dangerous than you - demons and other things that have been playing the power game for hundreds of years. You can’t ‘win’ against everything with the sheer weight of your will.”

>I can’t ‘win’ against everything with the sheer weight of my civil composure, either. Some things just need their fucking faces ripped off.
>But I can. That’s the whole point of being the Imperiate. Everything works out if I will it to work out hard enough. If I start doubting myself, everything falls apart.
>What do you know about power? You don’t even have any landwells and you got your ass handed to you by a ghost!
>If anybody should be afraid of what-if's, it's me. You think I haven't thought this through? I didn't ask to be some incredible badass who has to do everything, but that's the hand I was dealt, and that's what I have to deal with.

That's a spectacularly terrible idea.

Moriah can see magic. She'd know at least that we were casting something at her. She might be able to resist that sort of thing outright.

What would you suggest? That I beat them in their game with power of friendship?

I suppose we could look for allies while looking for landwells. I'm indifferend on the issue of if we should or shouldn't get landwells, but I think scoping out the locations would still be a good idea.

You're right. I can wait. Hell, I can wait a LOT longer time than just 10 years. But nobody else is going to wait. >you can take it slower. Focus on control. We’re only eighteen. Ten years, twenty years, a hundred years is just a blink in Halth.
And therein lies the problem.

This makes total sense if looking at things from a perspective where this is real life. We can't actually argue against that because she's right.

From the perspective of us as players, though, we know that it's not an option. It'd mean that either everything goes slow and boring or we just sit around and timeskip huge chunks, neither of which are good options.
>>
>>41095692
Well Moria said that we are already really powerful and thus can already do a lot of things we might set out to do. There is also natural power growth that isn't brought forth by landwells of rage induced ramapges.

There's also the fact that strong people are starting to take note of us so we might not have that much time.

“Can too,” you say. “That’s the whole point of the Imperiate. Mind over matter. It works out if I will it to work out hard enough – if I doubt myself, everything implodes.”

“Imperiates die,” says Moriah.

Like your mom. She doesn’t say it, but she doesn’t have to. (+5 Stress: 28) “Everybody dies. People die,” you hiss back, straining to keep your voice down. “I can’t do nothing. If anybody should be afraid of what-if's, it's me, but you think I haven't thought this through?”

“Sometimes people don’t think things through,” she says.

Her coolness gets you madder. (+5 Stress: 33) “I didn't ask to be some incredible badass who has to do everything, but that's the hand I was dealt, and that's what I have to deal with. Sitting around safe and sound would be great, but not everything’s about me, you know.”

“I stopped Meckor from blowing up San Francisco,” you continue. “I saved Waldric’s life. Without me, the whole demon-demonbane alliance would fall apart. If I didn’t help out, if I didn’t do something, everything would be fucked to hell already. And Sulkrasph and now maybe even Ugoshologuissa or whoever the hell might realize something’s up. Frankly, I don’t have time to pussy-foot around trying to figure out every single little detail. I need as much power as possible as fast as I can get it, before it’s too late.”

You can feel Moriah’s determination waver. “I wish you didn’t feel like you had to do this,” she says.

“Yeah, well, nobody tapped me on the shoulder and dumped a bunch of other options in my lap,” you say. You brush your hair out of your eyes and try to clear your head of unpleasantness. “Just... try to enjoy yourself. This is a fun road trip with fun adventures and life lessons and all that crap. So roll with it while it lasts.”

Moriah seems kind of defeated, but you guess she’ll just have to get over it. “You can drive if you want now,” she says, sounding fatigued.

You point up to an upcoming exit. “We’ll just switch up here,” you say.

--

You’re driving up the coast with twists and turns. And it’s really, really misty – it’s like you’re winding off into oblivion.

“Stop the car,” says Xan.

“Again?” Vikrama asks incredulously.

Xanissil winces and shakes the back of the driver’s seat. “Stop the –ugh – car!”

“Hang in there,” Ro says, keeping cool in spite of the panic in the car. “Pull out’s right ahead.”

The SUV screeches to a halt on some scenic overlook on the cliff-side road, though nothing is visible through the dank cloud cover.

Xanissil tears the door open, leaps out, runs to the guard rail, and spews chunks over the side into the white abyss.

You and Reeber hop out along with everybody else. “Always something,” you say, listening to the sound of the sea and keeping upwind of Xan so you can smell delightful sea mist and wind instead of her vomit. You unfold the map you’ve been carrying and try to locate yourself. “Where’s highway one on here?”

Vikrama walks over, while Moriah gently pats Xan on the back a few yards away. “Highway one ended down here,” she says, pointing out the place on the map.

“Wait. So where are we?” you ask. Because you’re definitely not that far south anymore.

“You wanted to drive along the coast, darling,” Vik says. “This is a frontage road.”

“Are we talking business?” Rowan says, ditching the wondrous white view to join the conversation.

“How long till Eureka?” you ask, shivering despite yourself at a cold sea breeze. What the hell happened to summer?

“Oh, we’ll get there tonight later on, probably,” she says. “Unless we keep stopping every mile and a half for Xanissil to throw up. Then maybe early tomorrow morning.”

“I can’t believe you didn’t bring any Dramamine,” says Vikrama.

You shrug. “You said you don’t get carsick. And Xan being a big pushover, well, how was I supposed to know?”

“Okay, it may have been an oversight on our part,” Ro admits.

“Well, now that we do know, what are we going to do about it?” Vik asks.

>Slow and steady is boring but it wins races, apparently. Let’s go.

“I say we take a break for fifteen minutes, air Xan out, roll down the windows, and drive real slow till the first place we can pick up some Bonine or whatever,” you say. “Any truck stop’s going to have it.”

“I second Sierra’s plan,” says Ro.

Vikrama nods. “Yes. Consensus. Break.”

You stay at the pull out for while Xanissil lies down and tries to regain her demonic constitution.

“You know,” you say, “this either one of two things. Either Xan shouldn’t eat anymore raw fish from lakes - ”

Moriah, who’s sitting cross-legged on the ground nearby, gives you a flat look. “You’re one to talk,” she says.

“I’ve seen you eat raw bacon,” Vik tells you.

“Of course,” says Mori, tonelessly. “Raw bacon. Nothing gets more extreme than that.”

“Uh huh heh,” you laugh, uncertainly. “Or uh. Or,” you say, regaining confidence, “OR maybe it’s time to buy Xan one of those ‘What to expect when you’re expecting’ things at the truck stop.”

Rowan snickers. “Xan, is that what you need?”

“Greh!” she groans, scowling at the sky. “I am not pregnant!”

“You sound so sure,” you say, pursing your lips.

“My sexual exploits are my – ugh – domain, silence!” She’s definitely still more than a little queasy.

You laugh with the others, but you don’t tease her anymore. She’s already having a hard time as is.

The one-lane road is incredibly quiet, and the cold eventually goes from being kind of refreshing to kind of cold. You’re definitely hoofing it cross country, but as long as the road’s paved, it’s not too much.

With caution, everybody gets back into the car, Xan being given preferential treatment in the front seat. Ro drives painfully slow, though Xanissil almost can’t even handle that, even with max AC and windows rolled down.

“Aggh!” you shout, thrusting a claw toward a sign.

“Aagh!” Rowan shouts, steering gently toward the exit, though with great urgency.

“What kind of town’s named ‘Porthcawl’?” Vikrama asks, as you begin following the windy little road down slope toward what is presumably a quiet little beach town. All the mist makes all that conjecture, though. You can’t see more than two hundred feet in any direction. “It’s not even a real name.”

“The kind of town you get to by driving on a frontage road for an hour,” Rowan says.

“What is a porth?” you ask. “Did they mean port?”

“Yes, let’s insult people we’ve never met,” says Moriah.

“Oh pshh, you like it,” you say.

Mori cracks a smile. “I didn’t say I didn’t.”

But minutes later, you’re in a heavily forested little town where you can’t see one building for the trees between it and the next. It’s like they barely cared enough to clear a way for the road.

“Vintage,” Vikrama says, eyeballing some of the parked cars alongside the road. True enough, pretty much every car here is a classic from the 60’s or 50’s – there’s even a sweet silvery diner thing, though the shine’s long worn off.

“Dad would die,” Ro comment.

“There there there there,” you say, spotting a little service station with gas pump that’s probably older than the trees sprouting out around it.
>>
>>41098035

You pull in and park alongside the pump. You step out onto a bunch of brown pine needles – the road’s practically coated in them.

On the side of the little service station store, a mechanic in a oil-stained denim jumpsuit leans over a 40’s era Ford truck, working on the engine. Except now he’s not working on the engine, he’s staring at you and the shiny SUV rental behind you. A name stitched in faded threads onto his suit reads ‘Robby’.

Inside the little shop through the grimy windows, you spy a decrepitly old woman, who eyes you and your new-age friends with distaste.

Besides feeling like you’ve gone back in time, you also feel a heavy air of... unwelcomeness? Like. Just idly from everywhere. You’ve been places that have carried feelings with them, but it’s not something that happens every day.

Moriah steps out beside you. “This place is strange,” she says.

Vikrama is almost ecstatic. “I love strange.”

“However strange, we could use some gas,” Ro says. “Who knows when the next stop is.”

Well. Your danger ring isn’t buzzing yet, so... maybe it’s okay. Maybe they’re just a bunch of weirdos.

>Ro’s right. We’ve got business here, however weird it is.

>How many of these encounters were consensual?
>Did being skinny save us from the blackening?

“Ro’s right,” you say. “We’ve got business here, however weird it is.”

“You guys stay with the car and keep your eyes open,” says Ro, but more especially to Xan, who is shakily stepping out of the vehicle.

“Nyess,” Xan replies, weakly.

Ro slings her sword sheath over a shoulder. “Fill her up,” she says, slapping the side of the SUV before heading off with you toward the store while you ensure Zelly is affixed to your hip.

“Hey!” you shout at Robby. “You got any Dramamine in there, or did they not invent that yet?”

The mechanic blinks blearily at you, like he’s high on something. Close up, you see it’s not just his suit that’s oily – he is, doubly so. “You can bet your biscuits we do, missy,” he says in a surprisingly deep voice.

“Yeah, I don’t know if I would,” Ro replies, just before you both head inside the shop.

The withered old lady behind the country watches you with bulbous, frog-like eyes, like if she looks away for a second you’ll pocket half the store. Not that you’d want to – half the store’s merchandise is dated from at least ten years ago, except for the sodas in the little fridge at the back. At least they keep up appearances.

“Excuse me,” says Ro, polite as can be, “where would your medicine be?”

“Just beside the sweets, miss,” she says with a thin smile, pointing with a crooked finger.

You and Rowan go to the back corner of the store, the hairs on the back of your neck rising. “Nobody calls them sweets, she’s a fucking alien,” you whisper.

“I’m actually 110% sure they’re Mermenes,” says Rowan, rifling through the medicine and bottles to find one dated this century. “Mermenes aren’t too bad on their own. They’re just... like this.”

“What do you mean, ‘not too bad on their own’?” you ask, narrowing your eyes. “They’re just ugly fish people, right?”

Except you’re already heading back up to the register. “Let’s talk later,” Ro says, slapping an aged box of Dramamine tablets on the counter.
>>
>>41099258
He seemed more like one of those anons who choose to give a 'goodbye' at the end of every thread to me, when the QM is departing or they have to leave for bed or work or whatever. Having a fraction of a sentence of green text to explain why he's going, then actually going instead of launching into a rant, is pretty far from what I'd normally see as a 4chan pity party.

Unless someone going 'Fuck, it's too late for this shit. I'm going to bed now; later Languide!' is something you'd consider a pity party too?
>>
>>41099312

The cashier uses her dated analogue machine to ring you up, prodding buttons here and there at an agonizingly slow pace. After a couple geologic periods, she hands back change for Rowan’s ten, which consists of a two-dollar bill, several quarters, and a loose button.

Ro slips the button back on the counter. “Thanks,” she says, stepping outside.

“Can’t get out of this place fast enough,” you mutter to yourself. You almost run into Rowan’s back, but your super cat-like reflexes allow you to stop short. You feel a shock of dismay and annoyance from Ro.

“So... I’ve got good news and bad news,” she says.

“Oh no. Don’t say anything,” you say, stepping around her and glaring where she parked the SUV. It’s not there. In fact, it’s freaking the middle of the night. Given that you got here about 4 o’clock, it shouldn’t even start getting dark for another three hours.

“The good news,” Rowan begins calmly.

“No!” you shout, more miffed than afraid. “Aggh!”

“Is that we’re still in the same place,” she finishes.

You step down a few stairs. Yep. Same place. Same smell. Just... different time.

“The bad news,” she continues, “is that they’re not on their own.”

Well, buggery. God damn fishmen, ruining everything.

There are two big possibilities I can think of, we've moved forward in time more than we should have, or we've gone back in time, which is significantly more complicated and will make following a scent trail kinda awkward.

On a side note, hindsight is 20/20, but it'd have been a good idea to get a blood sample from all of our buds so we could track them down if need be. Maybe we'll be better prepped next time.

People who have zero experience with swimming - which many black people historically did as a result of lack of access to public pools and an actual Southern history of disallowing black people from swimming in white-only swimming holes - tend to panic and flop around if they get into water above the height of their head. This isn't being 'fucking retarded,' it's 'Jesus, fuck, am I going to drown!?'

Sierra is one of those people, because a life of fearing being submerged has led to her having zero - or close to zero - experience with swimming, on top of an increased tendency to panic in water.

All of that said, black people not being able to swim is mostly just a completely antiquated stereotype, from back during the days of segregated public services leading to entire childhoods of literally never swimming even once - never being in a body of water bigger than a bathtub. These days, though, your average black person is as likely to be acquainted with pools and swimming as anyone else.

So yes, Sierra's a little retarded with phobia - in the same way her haircuts are stupid because of her scissors thing - while 'black people can't swim' is a stereotype that had reasons for existing at the time but stopped being true literally decades ago, but sticks around anyway, like most racist stereotypes.
>>
>>41100067
Mexicans can swim just fine. So can Cubans. Shit they keep crossing the ocean into Florida.

So uh, just a heads up but I imagine this road trip arc is gonna last quite a while. Cause we're not even like 5% of the way through. Not that I'm complaining, I'm really looking forward to every moment of it, But it could well be 50+ threads. I'm really excited for all of the magical things we're gonna run across as we travel cross country. Not to mention gaining power really gets my dick hard.

But it'll be nice having all these adventures and fun times on the road. Because by the time we're done we'll be ready to (and strong enough to) enter the whole halthian scene or whatever plotty thing it is that Languid has planned for when we get back. Probably Satt going full Satt.
