You have three prisoners, but none of them know River Speech (or at least there doing a good job of faking it), and more to the point, all of them are refusing to cooperate.

After attacking the hidden encampment of raiders south of Reiln, you and the rest of the outriders moved to the valley where the raiders had hidden their horses. Currently, there are seven desert coursers harnessed to a post in the valley, all of them in good condition, if a bit leery of you and the others.

You and Carter make sure to tie the prisoners far away from the horses, and each other. It should be enough, Carter seems to be just as good with knots as he claims.

The six of you (your two younger friends included) move away from the rest of the prisoners to discuss the next course of action.

“There is still a decent amount of river left for us to cover.” Valen begins. “However, I do not think it would be wise for us to leave these three alone for a long period of time.”

“Agreed.” Carter says. “We could take them back to town, but I think it’d be a waste of time, best just to make the rest of our sweep quick. The rope will hold them for a few hours at least.”

“Perhaps it would be more prudent to leave one person here to watch them?” Celes asks. “With the six of us, one person staying behind could even increase the speed of our sweep.” She casts a significant glance your way. You just roll your eyes.

“Albatross has been keeping up with your horses easily enough. If we end up slowed down, it won’t be because of my mount.” You say. “Still, leaving someone here to look after the prisoners isn’t a bad idea, they’re a better source of information than a coded letter.”

[1/2]
>>
>>41035597
Carter shrugs. “If getting the prisoners back to Reiln is that damn important, we could just end the sweep here. We’ve already hit a decent bit of territory and taken out the most relevant threat.”

“And letting those back home know their presence may be worth more than continuing to search.” Valen adds. “That being said, I am not much in favor of leaving a mission technically unfinished.”

“Indeed.” Celes sniffs. “While it might be more expedient, I believe that being thorough now is in our best interest. However, let’s not neglect the bird in our hand, it would still be best to leave at least one guard here to make sure nothing happens to the prisoners.”

You nod. You thought much the same thing earlier, but you aren’t completely sold on a course of action yet. “Maybe Sree could take the letter back to Reiln and let the guards know the location of the prisoners?” You suggest. “We could leave them here unguarded them, someone would be here to collect them before they could slip their bonds.”

“Perhaps.” Valen says. “Still it seems risky does it not?”

“So does leaving someone behind.” You reply with a shrug. “Either way, we should wrap this up quickly and get moving, staying her and chatting isn’t doing us any favors.”

“Indeed.”

What do you plan on doing?

Welcome to RE: Human quest!
In RE: Human quest, you play as Adria, the young adventurer who’s setting out to make her mark on the world.

Voting period is 10-15 minutes in length. Write ins are accepted but I reserve the right to veto any that I deem unfeasible. Dice are 1d100 and best of three, roll high with modifiers as I give them. I will ask for other dice as needed.

During Combat scenes I cut the voting period to about 7 minutes to keep the pace up. So far that hasn’t been a problem.

We don't have anything to gain currently off of continuing, best case scenerio we find nothing, worst case scenerio we find a large standing force and have to either leave prisoners behind, get caught, get in a fight, or any other myriad of violent ends.
>>
>>41035824
Except if we don't sweep they may regroup and hit us again while the city is still recovering.
>>
>>41035846
We just found evidence they are still active in the area, that is reason enough to return quickly. Bandits are like deer, for every one you find and catch, there are ten more you missed.
>>
Oh also, I checked the archive of the last thread.
Looks like the opinion is pretty evenly split on a Dark Templar (i.e. sneaky knight) job, so it's still up in the air whether I include it at some point.

Valen is a guy. I'm pretty sure I stated that several times, but yes, he is a guy, for any that are still confused by it.

The group you attacked is either dead or in your custody. Whether there are other such groups (and whether any of those groups noticed your attack) is a completely different matter.

Sounds like a shit job, I'd rather have normal paladin, Plus we only have two combat classes and i definitely wouldn't vote for dark templar, We already have a rogue
>>
>>41035941
The fact that these raiders didn't go home means others might not have either, we should warn the guard and finish the sweep tomorrow, when we don't have prisoners to worry about. Also that coded letter is !!PLOT!! material that probably merits getting it back safely anyway.
>>
>>41035951
Paladin is an offshoot of Cleric, so you'd need to switch out your caster job at some point if you want to unlock it.

You know this IC because your mother is a Paladin, and she would have told you the "unlock path"

“I think the intel in more important than finish the rest of the sweep.” You say after a moment.

“Intel?” Carter cocks an eyebrow.

“Sorry, I mean intelligence. Knowledge on what our enemies.” You jerk your head towards the prisoners. “are doing. This group looks like a split off from the ones that hit Reiln. Even if we continue our sweep and find another group, odds are we’ll miss at least one for each we take out.”

“So letting the guards and Queen know what’s happening is a larger contribution than maybe doing a bit more ourselves?” Carter asks. “I can see it. Don’t like leaving things ‘unfinished’ much either, but I’m with you on this one.”

Valen sighs. “It does seem to be the most prudent option.”

Seles just shrugs and poses no argument. So with that you tie up your prisoners to the horses and head out. The rest of their horses follow behind easily enough after you tether them to albatross. Though, that leads to another question, what to do with the coursers?

The city guard should buy them off you for cash, but at a greatly diminished value. There isn’t all that much demand for horses in Reiln, despite how useful they are.

“So what’s the plan for the loot?” Carter calls to you after you’ve started back. You’re going at a slow walk so that the raiders can keep up. Carter and Seles are up front, while you (your train of coursers) and Valen, shadow from behind.

You shrug. “Letter gets turned in as part of the mission. As for the rest, we’ll split it all up as evenly as possible right?” Carter gives a grunt of affirmation. “That said, anyone want a pick of the horses or the weapons?” Everything you took from the raiders of course, belongs to you.

[1/2]
>>
>>41036704
There really isn’t anything of great value other than the horses, some decent weapons, a few gold coins (which will be added to the pot when you cash everything else in and split it).

Celes glances over the horses with a speculative frown on her face. “I think I would like one of the mounts.” She says. “Having a second horse would make traveling much easier… especially since I’m due to leave Reiln within the month.”

“If no one objects, I would like all the arrows.” Valen adds. “Well,” He glances at Tamamo. “I suppose it would be best if the two of us split them. Their arrows are of the best make I’ve seen out of my homelands.”

Tamamo smiles shyly at his offer. “Th-thank you.” She says. “I would l-like that as well.” Valen nods.

Carter shrugs. “Not much there that has any interest for me. I’ll take my ‘share’ in plain gold if it’s all the same to you.”

You lean forward, "What do you think Alby?" you ask playfully. "You okay with me picking up another horse to carry stuff and such?

It would be useful to have a second horse for Tamamo to ride as well, if she ever gets bigger.

Albatross snorts and tosses his mane. "So should I pick a mare or a stallion?" He whinnies, it sounds like laughter.

“I’ll take one of the horses as well.” You decide. “Everything else we’ll sell and split up, accounting for the value of the horses and arrows and such that we’re keeping. Sound good?”

There are nods and noises of agreement made all around, and with that settled you continue on to Reiln.

====

With the prisoners, it took you a bit, but soon enough you’re approaching the gates of the city. A guard at the gate waves to you as you approach. “Done so soon?” He asks. “We didn’t expect you back until noon at the earliest. Especially not if you ran into trouble...” He eyes the horses.

You glance at your companions, but they’re all looking at you pointedly. You sigh and turn back to the guard. “We came back just after we passed the second rapids.” You say. “Found a group of Raiders hiding in a ravine along with all their horses, and this.” You pull the letter out of your belt pouch. “The leader had it. According to Celes it’s probably written in a code.”

The guard glances at it before slipping it into his tunic. “I’ll give it to the captain. I assume those three are prisoners then?”

You nod. “They don’t seem to know River Speech,” You admit. “but they all speak Dakartan.”

He sighs, “Of course not.” He mutters, rubbing his forehead. It’s probably been a long day for him. “I’ll let the captain know… he’ll probably have to get in touch with someone from the priesthood, or the college.” He shakes his head, then returns his attention to the rest of you. “However, I won’t be able to pay you in full since you didn’t technically finish the mission.” He says.

[1/2]
>>
>>41037189
You're funny.
>>
>>41037618
You shrug. “Will you buy the rest of the loot off of us then? We have five horses and various weapons to sell.” If the guards don’t take it off your hands, you’ll have to sell it all at the market, which could go very well or very poorly.

“Probably.” The man rubs the back of his neck. “I’ll have to get it authorized. But you can leave everything here for now either way. Do you want to get payed for the mission now? Or maybe take another one?” There’s a tinge of hope to his voice, you imagine there’s still plenty of work that needs to be done.

“I’m fine with waiting until you take the rest of our stuff.” You say.

“Easier that way.” Carter adds. “Just let me know when I should swing back by.”

“That is acceptable.” Celes says. “I need to get back to the temple now in any case. When will you have an answer?”

The guard shrugs. “Come back in two hours or so.”

“And the jobs?” You ask. “I’ll want to hear them at least.”

He nods, looking more than a little relieved. “Yes! Um… well the Queen is still looking for people to fill out the caravan to Bleakwind, though in light of what you just found, that may be canceled if they can't get enough volunteers. Us guards will need to stay and protect Reiln.” He pauses for a second. “You’re Sylea’s kid right?” You nod. “Your mother is signed on for the caravan. They’re leaving tonight.”

You blink in surprise. That’s the first you’ve heard of that. Tamamo looks up at you, perhps sensing your distress. You put a hand on her shoulder, you’ll just have to talk to your mom later.

“Anything else?”

“Well, we need some more people to help clear the wreckage of some of the buildings outside of the walls. A good few got lit on fire. Course…” He pats his tunic. “Easiest job would be running this letter up to the palace. You lot might want to head that way anyway, Queen’s gonna be making an appearance soon.”

Celes shakes her head. “Nothing much for me then.” She says. “I will be back in two hours, until then I must return to the temple.” With a wave she rides off, pausing only to take her new horse with her.

What do you want to do?

“Sign me up for the caravan.” You say. “If my mom is going on it, I want to come with.”

The guard chuckles. “Like mother like daughter I suppose. The both of you have always been a bit too adventurous.” He sighs dramatically, placing a hand over his heart. “Why must all the great beauties of Reiln be so far beyond a simple man’s reach?”

You chuckle. Though you feel you cheeks heating slightly, you can’t let such a remark go uncontested. "Perhaps the fault lies with the strength of your arm, guardsman?” You shoot back with a grin.

He staggers backwards. “You wound me!” He says. You just roll you eyes.

“Yeah, yeah.” Carter cuts in. “Put me down for wreckage clearing please? Or are you too busy flirting with younger women?”

The guard just chuckles good naturedly and signs both Carter and Valen up for jobs. He seems much happier now that there’s that much more off his docet for the day. Probably what prompted such a playful exchange.

For your part, you’re about to ride away but Sree lands on your shoulder. “Sung Tamamo and me up?” She asks.

You blink. “I wasn’t sure if you wanted to come.” You say, rubbing the back of your neck. “It’ll be a long trip and through the desert as well…”

Sree whaps you on the back of the head with a wing. “More sign ups!” She calls to the guard. From where she sits in front of you, Tamamo nods emphatically in agreement. You just sigh and wave for the guard to do as they ask. “So do you know where my mom is?” You ask the guard. “I should probably go talk to her about the caravan.”

“Let me see…” He checks some pieces of parchment. “Last I have her down for is by the west wall, seeing to the wounded in the Brack district.”

[1/?]

long update inbound. Still finishing it up.
>>
>>41038999
“Right.” You ride off. The Brack district is a polite word for the slums of Reiln, the name is taken from the word ‘brackish’, which is an insult for most fresh water dwellers. You aren’t surprised you mom is there helping though.

You make quick time towards the slums after dropping Albatross and your new horse back at your house. You feed and water them both but decide that Alby will be able to keep his new friend from wandering off. In the end you did not pick a mare, but rather a gelding. Albatross doesn’t seem to mind either way.

With that, the three of you head to the docks. After spending most of the morning on the wing, Sree is taking it easy and riding on your shoulder, though at the very least you convince Tamamo to walk instead of carrying her in your arms.

She comes up to your sternum, but still enjoys being carried, and (your motherly instincts being what they are) you really don’t have the heart to deny her most of the time.

You find your mom with Neru near one of the dock areas, she’s looking over several patients, many of whom appear simply to be sick, not even wounded in the raid. You smile and move over to help, washing bandages and helping some of her older patients get comfortable.

Sree ends up guiding some other people to where Sylea is healing and Tamamo helps you out. You work mostly in companionable silence, punctuated by brief snippets of conversation when you talk with each other and the patients.

Another hour passes before there’s a lull and you mother sits down on a small crate to catch her breath.

“Thanks for the help Adria.” She says with a smile as you share a hug. Neru scuttles back over from where she was doing… giant spider things and just lowers herself to the ground, eight legs folding neatly at her sides.

Ah to be a giant spider

>>
>>41039276
“uhm… yes I did. You’re going aren’t you?”

She shakes her head, “Yes I am! But that doesn’t mean you should come with me.” Off to the side, Neru has covered her mouth with one hand. Though the air feels serious.

“Why not?”

Your mother sighs, leaning back. “The raids from the desert have been getting worse.” She says. “Usually, we wouldn’t see even half as many attacks in half a year as we have in the last three months.”

“Which means.” Neru adds, seeing you (and Sree and Tamamo for that matter) looking confused. “That there is likely something wrong in the desert, and as Bleakwind is the only citadel in the Morrodak…”

“It stands to reason that Bleakwind will be at the center of it.” You finish.

“Which is why I don’t want you to come.” Your mother says. “It will likely be very dangerous. I’d rather you be here, where it will be safer.”

You glance away. You understand where she’s coming from, but that doesn’t mean you want your mother to go alone, or at least not without your support, either…

After a moment you look back and meet her eyes. “All the more reason for me to come with you.” You say. “So I can watch your back.”

You mother lets out a short laugh. “What, did you think Neru wouldn’t be coming with me?” Neru grins. “With an arachnae to watch my back nothing untoward will happen to me. Besides.” She gives you a mock glare. “I’m not a push over either Adria, and I’m certainly not so green that I need you to come along for my sake.”

She rests a hand on your shoulder. “More than that. Are you sure you want Sree and Tamamo coming with you? Into a potential warzone?” You glance away, but before you can muster a reply, Sree lands on your shoulder even as Tamamo hops off your lap.

“Will not leave Adria behind!” Sree says. Her feathers are puffed up as she glares at your mother.

Tamamo nods. “I will protect Adria-sama!”

Your mother looks as nonpulsed as you feel for a moment, before chuckling. “I see I have my work cut out for me.” She says.

So, wouldn't she prefer to be there to watch our back?
>>
>>41039903
Well, it's meta, but we've all been all hivemind over this ever since we heard mom was going on the caravan. Bonus points for presenting a united front both IC and OOC?

Other than that, I guess the bit I threw in at the end of my vote. Also, she can't technically stop us, etc. etc.

Anyone got anything else?

I don't know about you guys, but I think Tamamo should focus on stealth and medic jobs, for now. She's too young to be on the frontlines in a job this dangerous.

Good idea. We need a support-class anyway.

Maybe someone in the caravan can teach Tamamo the basics of healing? Could be our mom, could be someone else.

Her inability to take jobs makes that stuff harder, unfortunately...
>>
>>41040166
Monsters evo they don't get jobs
>>
>>41040166
Mom'll probably assign us all minor back line jobs. I wouldn't blame her either - from what she's saying, the front will be dangerous as hell.

Well, as far as I can well, all we really want to do is be there for her when shit hits the fan anyway, so that should be fine in any case.
>>
>>41040273
She'd have to be in charge to do that, And she isn't in charge

“See.” You say, crossing your arms. “We’re all coming with you. No matter how dangerous it is, we’ll make it work. If it’s too dangerous for us to fight, we’ll scout. I’ll make maps, boil water with lightning or just mend clothes if I have to, but there’s no way I’m letting you got off alone.”

“And you’re not worried about your friends?” You mom asks.

“Of course I am.” You say. “Especially if it’s going to be as dangerous as you’re making it sound. But… that cuts both ways. They’ll worry about me too if I don’t let them come with me. It’s the same for me and you.”

“That’s still no reason for me to let you come Adria.”

You sigh. “Fine, then how about how you can’t stop me from coming!” You say. “We have horses, so it’s not like we won’t be able to keep up with the caravan. And even if I stay here, it’s not like I won’t be getting in danger! You saw what my cuirass looked like after that scouting mission didn’t you?” Your mother winces.

“Still if you’re here-”

“Then I’ll be getting in danger somewhere that you won’t be able to protect me or heal me if I get stabbed again.” You say. “Is that what you’d prefer?”

Your mom sends you a glare, but before she can reply, Neru intervenes. “Maybe yah should jus’ let her come with, Sylea?”

Your mother glances up at her, looking betrayed. Neru just laughs. “Yer kid’s too much like you are.” She says. “It’s jus’ like she says, if she ain’t getting into danger with yah around, she’ll be getting into it on her own. Best yah be ‘round to keep an eye on her right?”

[1/2]
>>
>>41040311
Well, unless anons are really opposed to it, I'd say ask Tamamo if she minds learning healing and asking mom if she can teach.

Sylea might have other responsibilities, so if Tamamo needs to learn from someone else, that's fine.

Sylea pauses for a moment, and then slumps. You mouth a ‘thank you’ to Neru, who smirks.

“Fine.” Your mom says at length, recovering her composure. “But it’s up to you to plan your own supplies, food, camping gear, and equipment! If you aren’t adequately prepared by the time the Caravan leaves tonight, you won’t be coming with us.”

“Fine,” You agree. “But you don’t get to stop me from coming if I am all set! And Neru gets to judge.”

“Agreed.” And with that your mother stands. “I need to get back to healing, you’d best start packing sooner rather than later.

You nod and get back to your feet. “See you later tonight mom.” You say.

“I love you Adria.”

“Love you!”

With a hug, you’re on your way.

By the position of the sun, it’s nearing to eleven or twelve. If the Queen hasn’t already made her appearance, she’ll be showing up soon. If you hurry to the court gardens you may be able to get there in time to catch her address. Or maybe you should get started on packing early.

If you aren’t adequately prepared you mom will follow through on her threat.

So what does the Queen usually discuss at her appearances? I doubt it's to say the weather is lovely.
>>
>>41040832
It'll be in the next update. She's gonna talk about the raids.
>>
>>41040406
With your place on the caravan guaranteed (conditionally) you and your friends quickly make your way to the royal gardens, where the Queen usually makes her appearances to the public for speeches and other things like it.

The gardens are towards the North of Reiln, where the palace sits. The palace itself sits directly over the northern most part of Tymera’s blood that is still within city limits.

The water is carried up to the top of the palace via long term enchantments. It flows down the buttresses and crenellations of the palace, though the walls themselves remain inviolate, and forms places for the merfolk and other water dwellers to reach the Queen and her court.

Really it’s a marvel of engineering, like a giant fountain, and when the sun set catches the water at the very end of the day, it looks like the palace is wreathed in fire, or candle light.

=====

The gates are wide open when you approach the palace walls and you make your way quickly towards the garden. There is a large crowd has already gathered and you’re one of the last stragglers.

By the looks of it, the Queen is already on the balcony overlooking her subjects.

Queen Suin is a human, but the seat of power alternates between Human and Mermaid each generation, the queen’s successor chosen by the priesthood of Tymera. So far this has caused no more problems than any other mood of succession, so you suppose it works out well enough.

Divine right certainly holds a lot more water when the divinities are actually around and can be spoken to.

But enough of that, looks like she’s about to start talking.

“My children.” She begins, voice magnified with the aid of a court wizard standing unobtrusively nearby. “It is good to see you all still well and in good spirits, despite the most recent raid on our city.

[1/2]
>>
>>41041309
“The tribals of the Morrodak grow ever bolder in their attacks. They strike at us increasingly, but we shall never falter. Like the River of our patron, our course will never be stopped, regardless of the obstacles placed in our way.” She says with a smile. You suppose damns must not be a thing in this world.

“To aid those who stand apart from the lifegiving waters of our patron” She says. “I am sending forth a caravan of warriors and healers to Bleakwind Citadel, and with them we shall attack the root of these problems, and see the end of them.”

There’s a smattering of applause at that, but really Suin was never the most inspirational of speakers.

“Be strong and stand firm, my children. For nothing can do us harm, if we stand together as one people.” There are cheers as Queen Suin turns and heads back into the palace, waving as she goes. You let out a sigh even as you clap. You didn’t really learn anything of value there. But whatever.

Before the crowd can really begin to disperse, you make your way out of the gardens to get on with your packing. Where do you intend to go first?

Alchemist supplies.

Tent and Bedrolls

Water proof bag

2 Regen Potions

Alright, so looks like rations, waterskins, possibly light cloaks to ward off sand and the sun.

Can anyone think of anything else? I suppose we could ask the guard for advice whilst we are there.
>>
>>41041329
You quickly swing by the guard’s outpost. Celes is already there, and Valen walks up a minute or so after you. The three of you talk idly until Carter arrives and the guard gets back with your money.

In the end they did take pretty much everything, and your share (minus the horse and plus a bit more for Sree and Tamamo) comes out to 75 gold pieces. Which is good, considering you have to outfit yourself for a month long journey, two weeks each direction.

You end up asking around some and get a pretty comprehensive list of things you’ll definitely need if you’re traveling to Bleakwind.

The ‘caravan package’ as you call it includes:
Light cloaks
Blankets, for both you and the horses
Waterskins
Trail rations and fodder (the latter of which will be provided if you pay the caravan head)
Head wraps for the wind
And of course everything you already have bought

The biggest thing is water, you’re going to need a lot of it, though that isn’t a large problem with you being near the river. There are a few wells the caravan will be stopping at along the way but you will need to pay to use those, so you’ll need to have money with you.

The ‘caravan package’ comes out to 35 gold piece to outfit all three of you and your horses.

After you make your purchases, you head back home and begin organizing your supplies. Tamamo helps, and Sree tries to, but it still takes you most of the evening to get everything tied onto the saddlebags and neatly tucked away.

You’re glad you thought to keep one of the horses, or else you wouldn’t have space for everything.

Last of course is making sure all of you have the right clothes, naimly, light material made of white fabric or something like it for the sun. You make sure each of you has several changes of clothes, even Sree.

It takes some doing, but you manage to find her a sort of hat that she can where while flying to keep the sun off the back of her neck, even if it looks a bit floppy otherwise.

You let out a sigh and wipe your brow as the last bundle is properly tied. You’ve spent quite a bit of time since you picked up your money, closer to evening now than noon, but you still have a bit of time before the caravan assembles.

For a bit you considered maybe changing your job, picking something that was a bit more… relevant?... you suppose, to the potential conflict. Have some healing spells as a cleric wouldn’t be bad, or the offensive buffs of a knight.

But in the end, you decide it’s better to just stay with the jobs you currently have, rather than changing things at the eleventh hour. You’ll have time to experiment in the future, for now it’s best to stick with what you know.

So with nothing else pressing to see to, you check over the supplies and gear one last time before you decide what to do next.

Well, you suppose it certainly wouldn’t hurt to just spend the rest of the time with your friends.

With that, you sit down on the back porch next to Tamamo, and Sree actually hops off your shoulder for once after she lands, taking a seat on your other side. You swear, she’s way to happy using you as a perch.

You just spend some time talking.

“I w-was born in the islands to the s-south west, called Hourai. Traslated, it means “Sun’s Rest” because every night when the sun sets, it does so into our ocean. There is no land further west than H-hourai.” Tamamo says.

“Really? Nothing at all?” You ask.

She shakes her head. “O-only the endless ocean. Sometimes, b-before my family came here, m-my friends and I w-would go swimming in it. And w-we’d pretend we were adventurers, going to find the edge of the w-world.”

“Hmm.” By now, you are too used to the oddities of this world to truly discount her claims of an endless ocean, or the edge of the world. While your own Earth was round, who knows if this strange land follows such rules.

“Always lived here.” Sree replies with a smile. “But even if the past isn’t interesting, the future will be! Want to see strange new places, explore the skies everywhere!” She stands up, spreading her wings as if to take flight. “One day, if strong enough… I… Want to be as fast as the wind.”

You ruffle your little speed junkie’s hair with a grin. “You’re already plenty fast enough for me.” You say. “Sometime I think if you came down any faster, you’d rip my arm off when you landed.”

Tamamo giggles as Sree shakes off your hand. “No no! Not fast enough yet.” She says firmly. “Can still be seen.”

“It’s h-harder to be unseen by going fast than by hiding.” Tamamo confides in a mock whisper. “Movement draws the eye to you a-after all!”

Sree nods. “It’s a challenge!”

Tamamo turns to look at you “A-ano…w-what about you A-adria-sama?” She asks. “W-what do y-you want to d-d-do?”

“That’s a hard question.” You say with a smile. In your last life, you had it all planned out. Even a world war couldn’t set you off your goals in the end. But now?

“I wonder…” Sree and Tamamo are looking at you expectantly

Change takes it. Writing.
>>
As an aside, every time I see the words 'I want to change the world', I get the first Inuyasha opening stuck in my head.

It's pretty terrible.
>>
>>41043067
“I want… to change the world.” You say. You have never thought about your wants like this before, but… now that you do. The answer seems to pour forth from your lips as if you knew it all along.

“I want to remake it, to shape the world like clay in my hands. When I was younger, I often thought that I wanted to make a difference in the world, but it’s more than that… now that I’m older. I don’t just want to make a difference, I want to make all of them.” You feel a smile spreading across your lips.

“There is so much beauty in this world, so much boundless potential, you can see it as easily as breathing. But for all that, there is darkness too, and it threatens to snuff out that potential.” You stand, looking at both of your friends. “Even here, in the cradle of Tymera herself, there is hatred and bigotry, there is needless death and hunger and starvation and so many countless other things that should not be!” They both nod, rapt.

“But I…” You turn your gaze to the sky. “If I try hard enough, perhaps I can change that. Perhaps I can change all of that. Do away with the suffering and the pain and the hate. And make this world into a place of beauty…”

“And even if I fail, even if I have just set myself an impossible goal. Won’t it be worth it, if I can make even a tiny fraction of the world better? If I can change just as much as I can reach, does it matter that my arms fall short of my aims?”

[1/3]
>>
>>41044121
“Because even though, if I reach, I know I may fall like a star from heaven, briefly and brightly and forgotten all too soon… If I reach, I may also grasp this dream of mine. As slim a chance as that is. I believe that it is worth my life to try.”

You smile. “And if I fail well…” You look back at your friends. “At least it will have been in the pursuit of something worthwhile right?”

After a moment of silence, Sree nods, before jumping up to land on your shoulder. “Always knew fishy wasn’t going to settle for a life in the river!” She proclaims happily. “You have big dreams!”

Tamamo follows after her, moving to hug you. “You’ll make the world better?” She asks quietly.

For a moment you almost consider saying, ‘I’ll try my best’ or ‘I hope so’ or something equally ambivalent. But for some reason, you don’t feel like those qualifying statements are the truth. In this moment, you feel like the truth is something much simpler, much clearer.

‘Will you make the world a better place?’, she asked you. In reply, all you say is: “Yes.”

You ruffle her hair and grin as Sree ruffles your own, laughing as you make your way to the supplies and begin making ready for the caravan.

[2/3]
>>
>>41044139
Your conversations turn to more casual things. There’s laughter and smiles aplenty as you tie up the saddle bags, and pack up the clothes and weapons and water. When Neru and your mother finally arrive, they can find not a single fault with your preparation, and so the five of you head towards the gates.

As you walk in the fading light, you can’t help but smile. Despite the foreboding nature of this trip, you feel like things will, in the end, turn out for the better.

[Gain Trait: The Instrument of Evolution]
Your very footsteps will bring change to this world.

Regardless if you stay in one place, or never stop moving; regardless if you wish to change the opinions of a single person, or those of an entire nation; regardless of whether your dreams are small as pebbles, or as large as the Dragons Teeth Mountains, they will be within your grasp, should you simply reach out and bring them to fruition.

And you will be a harbinger of chaos.

The changes you bring will shake the heavens and the earth, and the powers of both will stand under your banner, or against it with all of their might. You will usher forth an age of paradise, or you will be seen as the greatest villain ever darken the doorstep of creation.

Go forth, and watch as the gods themselves are caught up in your wake.

What were the other traits, Argent, and what do the three of them actually do beyond trigger flags for us?
>>
>>41044415
Ah yes, now that you mention that I remember it.
In my system, magic doesn't work that way. There are spirits and gods of different elements, but not one that simply governs each element in and of itself.

>>41044464
The trait influences the story though you. A lot of what it does is creating the proper flags yes, but also it will affect how Adria acts and what choices become available to her.

The other traits were as follows:
>A Leaf on the Wind.
If it is worth finding, you will find it. If it is worth seeing, you will see it. If it is worth being there, you will arrive.

You will never have a need for a compass or a map. The road itself will guide you to adventure and all sorts of interesting things besides. As long as you are putting one foot in front of the other, you life will never grow dull.

However, you will grow more and more restless if you stay in one place. Things that were once interesting and new will grow plain and borning with alacrity.

You will never be able to remain, for the horizon, and all of it's countless delights, will forever be calling your name.

>The Mantle of Greatness
You seek strength, and it will be yours.

You will never falter in your quest to become more, you will never plateau or lose what you have gained. Teachers and experiences will arrive at your door to set you on the path to greatness. And while the effort is all yours, you will never lack direction.

You will be famous, if you survive.

Conflict will dog your footsteps, and challenges will array themselves before you. Perhaps some may even be too much, regardless of your strength, and you will know failure. You will come to know it intimately.

In the end, you will become great beyond measure, or you will die in the attempt.

It wasn't intentional, but the traits really do go easy -> Medium -> Hard.

I kinda thought change would be easier than strength, but taking them all to their logical extremes, I can see why it's the hardest choice.

Anyway, good job on the first arc. No major shitstorms that refused to die, no real asspulls story-wise, no waifu wars, likable characters,no egregious spelling/grammar errors (other than courser/corsair in this thread). Looking forward to the next arc.

In any case, have a good one, Argent. We'll see you next thread.

>To uphold the spirit of Law
>To work with the righteous and redeem the unrighteous

>peek

>To never turn away from a choice

Fuck, missed the quest. Ah well, glad to see you back, Argent.

New skill/perk recommendation:

Get Away From Her, You Bitch

Class: Special/Parent

You gain the ability to sense when your child is injured. If their injury is deliberately caused by another party, you gain immunity to all status effects (including pain - you can be wounded, you just won't feel it), double movement speed, and double damage whilst the fucker that hurt your baby is hasn't been turned into a stain on the ground (note, must be engaging or moving to engage said fucker for bonuses to activate).
