Baltas sets Emma down slowly, looking at you with a raised, bushy brow. He pets the younger girl on the head, mussing her hair unintentionally. Emma whimpers but doesn't move to fix herself, instead stepping back and hugging her chest. Baltas steps to you and crouches down. "What wrong here, niece?"

"'What's wrong here?' What's wrong... why are you here?" you ask, standing shakily and throwing your arms around him, wagging hard as Sylea continues trying to browbeat the red, who is having absolutely none of it. His wings form a barrier between the two of them, and you can hear your adoptive aunt growing furious at being ignored, small flashes of blue light intermittently breaking the shadows from the side of the cave they're arguing from.

"You are no please to see me? You break my heart!" He grins down, and you whine. He takes a quick look around - at the greasy smear that used to be Kiva, at your new, fluffier coat and larger muscles, the wide-eyed, traumatized-looking kitsune, and the unconscious dragon girl - and his grin dies on his lips. "Oh. I see some things have happened, da?"

You stare up at him blankly, your tail slowing to a stop. You can't even muster the words, simply nodding at him silently. He nods, patting your head. "You will tell me. But first, we will have a drink. Nerves are shot, da? And you do not seem young-young any longer." He shrugs a pack from his back and rifles around through it, moving aside various packets and bundles until he pulls out a stone the size of his fist. He grips the top and twists, and with a large pop it comes loose, revealing a bottle. Something from inside smells like a strange mixture of honey, snow sugar, and what he used to keep the oil lamps in his cave burning. "You too, tiny Emma."
>>
>>41012590
The kitsune shakes her head automatically, wrinkling her nose. She takes a seat where she is, staring at a fixed point somewhere ahead of her. Her eyes have begun to once more focus, coming out of her head space, but she still seems to be keeping a distance from everyone.

You whine softly. You know your uncle doesn't mean any ill will, and if he's comfortable enough to drink around the dragon, the danger has likely passed, but maybe now's not the best time. You're not even certain you want to drink what he's offering, but for a young kobold to be offered their first drink by a relative is like a right of passage. It would be rude to refuse. Maybe. It feels like forever ago since you were last exposed to anything that might remotely be considered normal.

You shake your head softly at your uncle, waving off the flask... or keg. It's massive, at least by your perceptions. "Later... when we're someplace safer."

Baltas looks around, at the jets of flaming gas ringing the caldera, the injured girls, Cain standing around looking like he hasn't the faintest idea what's going on any more, and the tall, slender woman now practically screaming at the giant beast, who has now covered its head with its front claws. All around are the signs of battle - blood stains on the floor, great claw marks, the ruin of expensive trinkets and treasures, broken or crushed flat under the weight of the dragon.

"You worry much. We are completely safe here!"

You shake your head, frowning. He shrugs, fills the lid of the flask, and takes a drink before corking it and putting it away.

"Hm. Later, then, yes. There are things to talk about, da? Sylea! Save your domestics for later! Come say hello to Nadia!" He throws an arm around you and pulls you close, laughing as Sylea snarls at the red.

"-and we are NOT DONE WITH THIS!" The red snorts dismissively, but his wings and tail droop in defeat and he remains turned toward the wall. Sylea exhales deeply, blowing out the rest of the plasma before she turns, striding gracefully across the rocks on her bare feet. She smiles sweetly as she approaches you, holding her arms open as she approaches. "Thank goodness... I've been worried sick about the two of you..."

You wriggle away from Baltas and cross the ground to her, pressing your head against her chest and embracing her, lifting her off her feet. She gasps in surprise before she chuckles, slender arms encircling your shoulders. "My my... you've grown since I last saw you. You and Djanna have become quite the lovely young ladies." She gently brushes her nails through your hair, her tail lashing back and forth in delight.
>>
>>41013267
You smile faintly at the praise, settling her down and breaking off the hug. She maintains it a few seconds longer before pulling back and looking down at you. She looks dishevelled, as if she'd been roughing it for days.

"Why... why aren't you home? Where's papa and mama?" You ask, hoping that your instincts are wrong. Sylea frowns softly, laying a hand on your shoulder.

"They're both fine, but your brother... he's gone missing. Shortly after you left, the warren was overrun by slimes. Everyone is fine!" She quickly assures you as your tail droops and your eyes widen. "Your mother got everyone out when they first started crawling up out of the magma. We moved everyone into the forest. Some... resisted... but they were subdued, and brought along. Whatever you said to your mother before you left seems to have had an impact on her methods."

You sigh with relief, giving in to a slight wag.

"Your father is fine. He's having trouble adjusting to life with only a single arm, but otherwise he's all right. Baltas and I stayed long enough to make sure that the mood wasn't going to suddenly turn, and... well, nevermind. With winter on Provet, I don't think anyone's going to have any time to be thinking about treason, or mass power struggles, or the like. You can rest easy about that, pup."

You wag. Probably for the first time since you left home, you give in to an enthusiastic, full-body, hip-shaking wag that makes everything from your ear tips to your ankles shift. You hug Sylea once more, then without thinking bound over to Emma. She flinches a bit, and you stop short of hugging her, smiling and reaching out slowly, holding your hand in place about the level of your head.

She looks up into your eyes for a long moment, as if weighing something very heavily, then presses her head up into your hand. You give her hair a brief petting, then pull back. She still seems timid, but her tails seem to have relaxed a little, at least. Baby steps, Nadia. The irony that you were running a few days after your birth escapes you.

You turn to Djanna, crouching down beside her. She's sleeping peacefully under the thin, silken blanket, bare as the day she was hatched. Her scales seem to have spread, creeping down over her brow from her horns, which have come to sharper points. Small ridges seem to have come up on her shoulders, and the barest hint of spines emerging along the back of her neck are evident - an angry red amongst the black.

"I'd hoped to teach her myself. Kardas' methods were always far too brutal." Sylea crouches down beside her daughter, reaching out and running her fingers lightly over her hair with a sigh. "Poor girl. I don't even want to think about what he did to her..."

You look over at her with a frown, letting your tail sink. "Is she gonna be okay? What made her change like that? Is it gonna-"

Sylea holds up a hand, speaking calmly. "One question at a time, Nadia. Please."

You nod and try to calm yourself again before speaking. "What made her change like that? It was her, right?"
>>
>>41013860
Sylea nods, turning half to face you and Djanna. You hear Emma's footfalls approaching slowly, though she keeps her distance. "The change comes for every dragon when they're young, but it usually takes something traumatic to trigger it. When I was younger, my parents left me alone out in the desert. You might think this is cruel, but to dragons it's a right of passage. It can be a dangerous, violent world out there... as I'm sure you've seen." She turns her eyes to the giant red beast, glaring. "I'll find out what he did to her, and I assure you if he hurt her..." Her claws seem to harden and darken as she taps her index finger against her knee.

"So... you can all do that? Turn into a monster, I mean..."

Sylea turns her attention back to you and smiles, the ire in her eyes gone, but her claws remaining. "Well, most of us. Dragons who have taken to living more civilized lives may never go through the change. My parents were very traditional, though. Thought that all dragon-kin should know how. It's come in handy in a lot on instances... like here." She looks up to the lip of the caldera. "I don't know if we would have made it here when we did if I hadn't been able to fly."

"So... so Djanna can fly now?" You bend down and look over her. She doesn't have any wings. She doesn't look like she has the leg strength to even jump particularly high. Sylea nods.

"In her dragon form, yes... but it's going to take a lot of teaching. I suppose now it's necessary, but I'd hoped... well, I didn't want her to know about the form change. I had wanted her to grow up innocent, without having to know about that side of the world. I suppose in retrospect, it was naive. With her father being who he is..." She looks wistful for a moment, then her eyes harden. "I'm sorry, Nadia, you don't need to hear this. You've been all right? Who's your little friend?" She turns and looks at Emma. The small kitsune has her arms tight around her chest, and she tries not to flinch under the dragon's gaze.

"Aunt Sylea, this is Emma. She's my sister." You introduce her without hesitation, or missing a beat. Sylea smiles, turning to face the girl from her sitting position. She half-bows to the girl, speaking to her in a language you don't recognize. Emma tilts her head in confusion, and Sylea raises a brow. "I had thought you would speak... well. Never mind. It is good to know you, Emma. I hope we can become better acquainted."

Emma gives a timid nod, slowly crossing to you, and settling down beside you outside of arm's reach. "How... how's Djanna..."

"I'd be better if you'd all let me sleep..." The girl shifts to a sitting position, slowly, groaning and reaching up to hold her head. "Hey, girls... what'd I miss?"

You and Sylea both grab onto her at once, eliciting a surprised yelp from the dragon girl as you pull her into a mass hug. Djanna's cheeks flush red as she realizes she's bare, and she tries desperately to drag the blanket back up over her chest. Emma sighs and moves around to the other side, grabbing the blanket and putting it in Djanna's reach.

"Mom!? What are you doing here!?"

You can't help but laugh as you bury your face against the girl's neck, nuzzling and wagging hard enough that your tail wraps around you, slapping Emma and Sylea in turn. Tears of relief and joy spill from your eyes, hitting Djanna's scales and trailing down her chest and arm. Emma sits at Djanna's side, ignoring the assault. Djanna whines, trying to pull away, but her mother's arms hold her close.

"Shh, no. No, I haven't seen you in weeks. You're going to sit right here and let me hug you, and as long as you aren't going anywhere, Nadia is going to hug you too. There's no escaping it. Just surrender."

"Mom, c'mon, lemme go... I'm naked!" She falls still, whining softly. Emma rises, moving to where you'd dropped your gear.

"Yes. Am dainty, tiny little girl. Not at all large and hulking kobold, da?"

Djanna's blush deepens, and you turn to growl at your uncle. Baltas gives a belly laugh and turns, striding over toward the gigantic red beast. "You are still big-big and angry? Shrink down before I put you out, you shitty lizard. Fuck! You! Human! Avert your eyes and come drink with us!" Cain looks between you and Baltas, edging toward you. Baltas growls, walks over to him, and throws him over his shoulder. "I did not ask you were wanting, da? You. Will. Drink!"

You turn back to Djanna and frown, worrying over her before Emma returns with a change of clothes, kneeling down and holding them out to you. "They might be a bit small on her, but here." It looks like a spare set of clothes from the gifts the islanders left you. You nod your thanks to Emma, and Sylea takes them. "Nadia, would you min- actually, I'll hold the sheet up. Would you mind helping her change? I'm sure you two have some catching up to do."
>>
>>41015530
You tilt your head curiously as Sylea stands, sweeping the sheet out and holding it up as an impromptu curtain. You hear Cain retching from across the cavern, shouting a ragged "GODS, THAT'S VILE!" as Baltas laughs. You stand and DAMN IT! You look up at the dragon woman. She had been tall when you were a pup, and you were used to looking up at her, but even after all the time you'd spent away, and the changes you'd been through, she still seemed to tower over you. Djanna stands shyly and your betrayal is complete, as the dragon girl seems to come to her mother's nose. Emma rises as well, and at least she comes only to your chin. Wait... did you shrink!?

You growl softly and Djanna looks at you curiously. Emma starts to take a reflexive step back, and you turn your grown to a whine quickly, shooting her an apologetic look, which she returns. You help Djanna dress, filling her in on everything that happened after the shipwreck - about Far-Runner, the village people, the shrine, and even -

"...I killed him..."

Djanna pauses as she belts on her top, looking at you with an inscrutable expression. "...Nadia, you didn't-"

You shake your head, tears in your eyes. "He was a jerk... he was a mean jerk, and a creep, but he came back to help us and he said he was gonna try... but he attacked you, and I tried to heal you, and I just felt so... so... angry! I didn't want him to hurt anyone else ever again, and I..." Your voice drops to a terrified whisper. "...I made sure he wouldn't... even if I wasn't in control, I didn't want him to hurt my sister any more..." You feel a small, slender hand on yours and you look down. Emma is looking away from you, but still, her hand has found yours, giving it a gentle squeeze.

You grip her hand tightly, trembling as you try to stay strong. You look at Djanna, your eyes full of worried tears. "Why would Yra tell me to kill somebody, Djanna? I thought he was good..."
>>
>>41015552
You hear Sylea's tail whipping the air behind the sheet, and your Uncle's laughter as Cain begs him not to pour another drink, already slurring his words. Another voice, one you don't recognize, goads him on.

"...Nadia, listen to me. You're not evil. Whether Yra is or not... I don't know. I've never talked to a god, and I don't know what to tell you. I know my sister, though... and you are not evil. You wouldn't hurt a fly, let alone kill somebody without something being seriously wrong." Emma frowns and looks down at her feet, tugging her hand out of yours and folding them against her hips.

Djanna turns to you, gripping you by the shoulder and turning your face to hers. She locks her eyes on yours and gives you a bright smile. "You're a good girl, Nadia. Whatever happened, we'll work through it." She looks down at Emma and reaches out, wrangling the kitsune close and bringing the three of you into a group hug. "All three of us."

>if we should continue on our journey considering the whole reason we did so is kinda gone.
We still have a divine mandate. The other gods want their shrines recovered, fixed up, and reactivated.
Especially since they apparently talk with each other and any gods left off the list will be pissed.
>>
>>41015746
Just go.
>>
>>41015757
How am I wrong. Seriously, there's no reason to continue. None.

Parents are safe, family's safe, we're going to ignore the gods' shrines, and we're just going to go fuck around and do nothing until this thing dies the slow, lingering death it always deserved.

The quest is dead. Prove me wrong.
>>
>>41015552
>Thank Djanna,
Together.
>>
>>41015754

Thing is, we don't care about the divine mandate. At least, we don't have a reason in character to care about it more than the character who have recently been battered and mauled beneath a wave of grim. Until Lotus says: "The problem is fixed", I don't personally see the quest as it has been as being terribly important.

We'll just fire up the hugbox until Emma and Djanna go back to semi-normal, and yes, while that will be a shitty way to while away a couple of threads, it may be necessary.
>>
>>41015797
Then leave, what's keeping you here?

I'm still interested in visiting the rest of the shrines. For one thing it'll mean Yra has less influence over us.

>>41015745
L-lewd...
>>
>>41015831

We don't know that at all. That's not to say I don't want to see the shrines or have an adventure, but I could give less of a piss about them if trying to pursue them is going to devolve into a daily reminder that Emma doesn't trust us and Djanna is the kicked puppy of the universe.

We don't have to crash the quest for too long to deal with this if Lotus will just make things happen, but I'd prefer we deal with this now rather than later.
>>
>>41015581
Writing. Just a reminder: Have to work tonight, so brief break around 8:30 so I can get ready. We'll resume from there. I expect people will be going home or too drunk to drive after being off all day, so I expect a quiet evening.

Of course, I'm frequently incorrect.
>>
>>41015901
What are you talking about? It's like you don't get that Emma's got a reason to be skittish.
>>
>>41016025

Yeah. I get that. She's got a reason to be skittish, to be afraid of Nadia for growling at her menacingly. She once tried to melt the flesh off our bones and damn near succeeded when she had a flash back, but clearly that doesn't weigh in on this. What I'm saying is, I want to install a story impetus guaranteeing that this shit isn't going to become the persistent, nagging cancer of mistrust that'll just make everything else that happens worse for its involvement.

I don't want a "Lol, you didn't see to the NPCs emotional needs and now she is evil and/or hates your guts." However, that takes time, time I'd much prefer doing literally anything else.
>>
>>41015581
You hug your sisters tightly, and Djanna returns the embrace. You even feel Emma embrace the both of you, and you can't help it. You begin to cry again, the deep, soulful tears that cleanse the soul. You lay your hands on the back of your sister's heads, drawing them down against you. You hear Djanna sniffle softly, and feel your fur dampen around your chest, even Emma getting caught up in the moment.

"So... Djanna. Is it hard to ride a dragon?"

Before she can respond, the lights go out. The sheet that had been covering Djanna settles over top of the three of you.

Djanna yelps in surprise, and you move to pull back, ready to fight, as Sylea's slender arms embrace all three of you. "I'm so proud of you both. You've been through too damned much for being so young... and you."

She reaches down, finding Emma's back and patting it gently. "I don't know you, but my girls are sharp. If they brought you along, well, I know you'll take good care of them and vice-versa."

A few moments pass before you feel Emma nod quietly against your chest. Sylea sweeps the blanket away from the three of you and lays it over her arm. Djanna blinks owlishly, you smile and wipe your eyes, and Emma just shakes her head, flicking her ears to right them before stepping back. Djanna separates as well, wiping her brow in the oppressive heat.
>>
>>41016422
You look back to see Cain with his arm around Baltas as the latter sways back and forth with his arm around a tall, slender figure with pronounced brow ridges, long backward-sweeping horns, and a thick, spiked red tail curling around on the ground behind him. The massive dragon is gone, and you assume the scaled figure was once the beast.

Baltas takes a deep drink from the flask itself before passing it to the dragon, who does likewise. The elder kobold then reclaims it, pouring a small shot for Cain, who takes the top of the flask and downs it. He hands it back to Baltas, wipes his lips, then promptly passes out on his face. The dragon-man points and laughs at the human, growling something you can't quite make out, before he grabs the flask again from your uncle, upends it, and follows suit, passing out atop Cain.

Baltas takes the flask back, corks it, and rises on steady, unshakeable feet. "Okay. Asshole whoreson is unconscious. What now?"

Sylea points to her bag and Baltas nods in turn, crossing to it and pulling out several lengths of silvery metal chains and heavy locks.

You tug gently on Sylea's arm, and she looks down at you. You nod toward Baltas as he casually grabs the dragon by the horn, dragging him over to a bare patch of ground and tossing him down on the stone. The dragon groans and Baltas gives him a kick in the ribs.

"Be shutting up, back-end of a tunnel weasel. Wait... is not right. Rat. Yes." He kneels and plants his knee in Kardas' spine, jerking the man's arms behind his back and looping the chains around his arms, under and around his shoulders and neck, even laying a couple links along his horns, before finally putting him in a hog-tie and snapping locks on each place the links cross.

"What's gonna happen to him?" You ask. Sylea scowls, crossing her arms.

"Hell if I know yet... sorry, I mean I haven't decided." She smiles down at you, but you see fire in her eyes. "He's caused a lot of trouble. I'm sure this treasure didn't just happen to be here. You mentioned the ship. I'm sure if we ask around down in Fireshade, we're going to hear about a lot of shipwrecks, and a lot of fathers who never came home."

She glares down at the man, now snoring deeply with a string of drool dribbling down his chin. "To think I... ugh... if it were up to me, I'd just chain him to a rock and drop him in the deepest part of the ocean. But he's going to have a lot of making up to do. And he's going to make it up to every single one of those people. If he doesn't, or isn't willing to try..." She lets the threat hang in the air. You see Djanna look at her mother, confused.

"Mama... why are you so angry at him? You know him?"

You see Sylea's expression harden, and her eyes go glassy as her tail snaps rigid, like her spine. "Just an old friend, Djanna, my love. Don't worry too much about it."

"But-"

"Sweetheart mine, why don't you take Nadia and Emma outside for a minute? I need to talk to Baltas. Alone."
>>
>>41017204
"But... can't we stay with you?" you ask, whimpering lightly. Sylea looks down at you, her expression an impenetrable mask.

"I promise, we will talk later. Just be a good girl and wait outside, all right pup?" She reaches over and musses your hair lightly before striding across to Baltas. Djanna takes your hand gently and gives you a tug.

"C'mon... let's just go for now." You whimper and hold your ground as you watch the dragon whispering with your uncle, before finally giving in and following her out through the long, blazing tunnel. You come to a rest outside, catching the sea air and a bit of respite. You sigh and sit down on the landing in front of the tunnel, your tail swishing and sweeping the stone bare. Emma takes a seat carefully, whimpering at the burns on her legs. Djanna remains standing, her back to the cave entrance.

"What are we gonna do, guys?" you ask, crossing your arms in your lap and looking down over the city below, lanterns and bonfires burning in the streets, casting their flickering light, outlining revellers and pedestrians with shadows that stretch out like giants behind them. Even from here, you can make out the din of civilization, the raucous song of a city at night.

"I say we go on ahead." Djanna says matter-of-factly. "This was... a bad situation. But, we're together again. I don't think we should let the bad things keep us down, you know? We only lose when we lay down and die. And Nadia? Emma? I... wanted to say thank you. I might not have come back to my senses if you hadn't come looking for me."

You turn back to look at her, the dragon girl looking directly at you, then to Emma. There's something different about her. She seems older, somehow. More mature. Emma whines softly, pulling her knees up against her chest.

"As if we weren't gonna..." she mutters, her ears folding back.

You nod your agreement. "It's what sisters are for, right?"

Djanna smiles and nods likewise. "I'm lucky to have two like you."
>>
>>41017222
You watch the sun rise over the horizon before Sylea finally steps out of the cave, carrying her pack, followed by Baltas, carrying Kardas and his own pack. He drops the dragon like a bag of grain and turns back to the tunnel. "Mmm... tricky, da? We will not be able to collapse it and get back in."

"Maybe not you, but I can fly."

"And anyone with feet can climb rocks, she-snake. We make him start from nothing, da?"

"I like the plan, but the treasure belongs to those sailors, or at the very least their shipping companies. It would be a shame to leave it."

"Then maybe we take it? Like old times?"

"I'm not comfortable with that."

"Come, now. The girls wear homespun. Perhaps they need new shoes, or something?"

"I don't want them to get accustomed to expensive tastes. That way lies greed."

"Bah! A little greed is good! It is good to want finer things, da?"

You sense an argument brewing.

>Interrupt (Write-In)
There's probably a lot in there, and we're adventurers. Not like we need glorious tapestries. We sell off or melt down enough to get us some solid equipment, potions, maybe enchantments, a few essentials, and leave enough to divide among ourselves for personal luxuries. Some satin to go under the armour would be lovely.

From there, we check with the shipping company for a list of personnel on the ship as well as a copy of the manifest, split it to give as many as possible a reasonable share, and whatever's left goes to the company to make up for its losses.
>>
>>41017245
>Interrupt
We do need to resupply, and get new gear to replace the stuff that was destroyed. Also, we need money to charter another ship, and for healing poultices for Emma's burns.

And we should take the treasure now to give to the families of the dead sailors.
We shouldn't be leaving the treasure behind just for some other adventurer to loot.
>>
>>41017510
We have a dragon shapeshifter now. Two of them, for the time being. I don't think we'll need ships any time soon.

"Um..." you step forward, and the two adults turn to look at you, the brewing storm between them holding for the moment. "Well, there are a few things we need. We lost some stuff when the ship went down... not much, just a few things! We could maybe take just a little to replace it with. And Emma's legs got burned. We need to get her some help. We could hunt for something, but it may not help with the pain."

Emma looks touched, but she keeps it under wraps. Sylea looks at Baltas with a frown, and Baltas nods. "Practical child, da? See, she get what she need, and there is enough left to help with the sailors. You need not worry much." The elder dragon scowls, but lets the matter drop. Baltas dips back into the cave and returns a few minutes later with a small bag of coins. He tosses them to you and you catch them with a grunt. You're not too terribly aware of the value of money, but for the moment you stash the bag in your knapsack, alongside the bag the elder of the village gave you.

That only leaves you with a question of where you go now.

"Wait... where's Cain?" you ask Baltas, tilting your head.

"Hmm? Who? Oh, human? I thought he was from city below. Thought I would leave him, would make good story for him, da?"

"Baltas! You just left him!? The cave is on fire, for-"

"Ahh, stop snapping she-beast! I go get him. You watch your shit-scale m-"

Sylea hisses loudly at baltas, bearing her fangs. The elder kobold simply squints against the spray of spittle and rage.

"Perhaps you are needing to chew mint? Your breath, it could kill."

"Just go get the human!"

Baltas nods and turns, walking back into the cave, grumbling under his breath. Sylea shakes her head, breathing deeply to calm her nerves. Djanna looks to you nervously. Emma seems as if she is torn between laughing and remaining stoically silent.

>Tell Sylea that you need to take Cain home, and you have business with the village.

We punched Kiva so hard that we killed him by more or less caving in his chest. The dragons fire probably melted his remains beyond recognition. Honestly, I think it's in character to blame this whole thing on the gods. Nadia wasn't aiming to kill until Lotus more or less had Yra shove a vengeful hand up her ass.

White-blonde hair to her shoulders, slightly curly at the tips. She's short, bigger hands and feet that would normally be proportional on a human, blue eyes, humanoid features besides the long white tail with a slight curl in the tip. Her ears are fluffy, with a slight flop at the tips.

Listen. What we have now is fine, at least superficially. Emma has stopped the cringing away from our every movement thing, and unless Lotus is hiding a truckload of emo bullshit below the surface, we're at the point where this relationship should repair itself the rest of the way within a few in-game days. Djanna's fine because she got free super powers for a little emotional abuse and no one cares that Nadia got almost murdered a half dozen times trying to make this reunion happen.
>>
>>41031102
>Implying emotional issues will just heal like that

I think Lotus is playing too fast and loose with the mental state shit anyway. Real PTSD takes years to get over. You don't just "fix" it. And Djanna's superpowers will effectively drive her insane the longer she uses them.
>>
>>41031759
>Djanna's superpowers will effectively drive her insane the longer she uses them.
And yet we have people wanting to have Djanna fly us to our next destination in that insanity-inducing form, rather than take a ship, because it's faster.
>>
>>41031759

That's my entire point. He should stop trying to break the characters as much as he has, because that will mean the continuance of the game will either lead to their full scale mental collapse, which none of us fucking want or us completely forsaking the adventure, buggering off, and doing jack shit for threads on end.

Granted: "My sister growled at me menacingly then killed a guy who was a total dick" might not be as much in terms of PTSD, but just in general, it would be nice if he curbed the grim derp enough to where we don't have to tip toe around on egg shells for the main, active components of the quest to remain stable.
>>
>>41031992
If it had been any other character, I'd agree and say Lotus is just being a cunt, but I kind of get it with Emma (though, his fault for putting her in our path anyway). She'd spent centuries being the bitch to an insane zombie, and who knows what happened to her between that and getting sold out by her other sister. I mean, we know Djanna and Nadia are resiliant. She's an unknown. Hell, Djanna nearly actually died.
>>
>>41031992
To be fair Nadia tried to kill Emma too. Also Emma has severe PTSD from getting sold out and put in Zombie hell for centuries.
>>
>>41032078

He's mellowing her the fuck out on this from what I've seen, which is good. And yes, it's in her character at the very least to be worried and afraid because of what happened. However, Lotus setting things up to put her in the line of fire will be a problem if he then turns around and institutes some cycle of grim despair.
>>
>>41032180
I'm just worried he's got some "Break the Woobie" type shit planned for her later on.
>>
>>41032180

Or, more specifically, if he instigates a situation where that sort of terrible despair and mistrust is the only believable character reaction.

>>41032206
Which is what I mean. I mean, Christ, half the reason I read this is for the daily adorable with kitsune sister.
>>
>>41032253
What's the other half?
>>
>>41031813
She'll be spending a longer time not being a dragon than she would flying us around. A few days a month, at most. Hardly enough time to go as crazy as her dad was.
>>
>>41032307
>>41031813

To be fair, that's really not going to put her at a tipping point, at least, not without Lotus really pushing for unnecessary complications. The party has an air ship (or air sister) now. Let's be happy about that.

>>41032302
It's generally well written, scene to scene. Transitions need a bit of work, as does overall pacing. A part of the problem with the former and the latter is Lotus' own preoccupation with making things grim and psychologically harmful to the main characters, forcing periods of down time and recovery that he doesn't properly flesh out and then tries to rebound off of far too quickly. It just doesn't work most of the time, which makes the next step in the quest feel artificial.
>>
>>41032439

"We need to get Cain home. I also should really tell them what happened to Kiva. I owe him at least that much..." You hang your head in shame, your tail drooping. Sylea considers it, then nods.

"That's probably the noble thing to do. At the very least, his friends should get some kind of closure." She reaches out and lays a hand on your shoulder, giving it a gentle squeeze. "You've really grown since I saw you last, Nadia." You wag gently, but it's a shy sort of thing.

"So how do we get back there? I mean, Cain's boat can't take all of us. I don't even think it would take Baltas, and he's in no condition to row through the Torrent anyway." You eye the unconscious human as Baltas reappears, the boy slung over his shoulder. Sylea hefts Kardas with a grunt and turns back to you.

"We'll figure that out once we get back down the trail." Sylea looks to Baltas and jerks her head toward the trail, and the large kobold takes the lead. "We can probably hire a boat that will take us all."

"We aren't going to fly?" you ask. Sylea chuckles.

"Sweetheart, I could barely carry your uncle for this distance. All of you would probably be a deal too much."

"Oh..." You nod, frowning thoughtfully as you follow the adults down the trail, back to the city. The guards eye you critically as you enter, stopping you at the gates. The larger of them, a tall dark man in an eye patch with a long-handled club at his hip, stepped forward.

"What in de Infernal was all dat noise about up dere last night? And here you come back down with..." He looks from you, to Sylea, Baltas, Djanna, and the captive Kardas as if trying to calculate high-level math in his head alone. "...more people den you went up with? Explain yourself." The second guard, a great fat man, nods behind him.

Your tail droops and you step back, at a loss for words. "You... you could hear that?"

"Ya, I could hear dat. Now unless you got a good explanation, you can just go back on up to dat cave, de lot of you. You aren't bringing trouble into dis city."

You look to your companions, at a loss for words. Your eyes fall on Djanna, then Emma, then an angry-looking Sylea, then on a grinning Baltas. He steps forward, Cain casually stretched across his shoulders.

"Shit-damn, you are poor soul, da?"

The dark man scowls at Baltas, his hand falling to the haft of his club. "What are you talking about, dog-man?"

"You are three-cursed, da? Burned, one-eyed, and ugly! No wonder they put you to guard gate! You would scare off even bad weather!"

The dark man stared at Baltas for a very long moment, his lip curling. Finally, he threw back his head, giving a great barking laugh that shook him from his chest to his knees. It possessed him until he fell into a crouch, slapping at his knee. Baltas grinned, shrugging Cain up onto one shoulder as Sylea visibly relaxed.

"And you! You remind me very much like an old dog I once had. He was a miserable old cur, who constantly scratched at fleas and smelled horrible! It was a good day when I was able to put him down, and out of my misery." The man grinned up at Baltas, and the kobold bent down to offer his hand. The dark man grabbed it, and Baltas helped draw him to his feet before producing another flask from the inside of his great cloak and popping the cork out with his teeth.

"Then here is to old dogs and ugly guards, da?" He takes a deep swallow from the flask, then offers it to the guard who also drinks before passing the flask back. The fat guard in the back looks nothing if not confused. Baltas puts his free arm around the guard, leading him inside the gates. "Now, what happened, it is great story, best told over strong drink. Where is public house?"

"H-hold it! You can't leave! The governor-"

So Lotus.

You uh notice anything wrong with the name you're using?

"FUCKDAMN, do you not read mood!?" Baltas wheels on the fat guard, and the dark man glares with his good eye. "I am going to have drink with my friend, you great two-leg ham! You watch gate for few minute, maybe we bring piggy-bag, da!?" He slaps the guard's stomach on the way by, motioning for you to follow. You quickly fall into step behind him, Sylea following with Kardas, then Djanna with a hand on Emma's shoulder. "Now, where was I? Ah, yes..."

The guard seems stunned as you walk by, half in confusion, half in anger, but it's enough that he doesn't stop you. The dark guard leads the small group to a two-story building in the center of town, quiet at this time in the morning. Baltas sends him on ahead before turning back to the rest of you. "We will drink, and I will see what is needed for us to leave, da? Sylea, you will see to the girls, please?"

"As if you need to ask, you old cur." She grins, passing Kardas off to him. "Keep an eye on him. If he comes to, kick him in the head till he passes out again."

Baltas nods, easily hefting the dragon and the young human before walking back inside. You look around the rest of the city. It's not quite so big as Dvotysk, or so its seems, and it seems made of whitewashed planks and great beams rather than stone. It seems all but bereft of people, despite the masses you saw wandering about the night before.

We really should get back to the village after all weren't we told that this wasn't a good place for young girls?

Maybe some 'new' armor for Djanna and food for Emma to start healing?

That's just Sylea. Djanna's crossbreed between eastern-style and western-style dragon could lead her to be hardier.

And Transport it is. Break for supper, then writing.

"We need to get a boat... something to get us all back to the village." You look up at Sylea, and she nods in agreement. "Let's go check the harbor. That's where the boats are, right?"

Djanna gives you a look like you'd just grown a second head, and you frown, your tail drooping. "I mean... of course that's where they are. Let's..." You let the statement drop, and Djanna follows you, patting your shoulder gently. Emma and Sylea take up the rear, the elder dragon trying to engage the child in conversation.

"So, Emma. You are a friend of Nadia and my daughter?" The kitsune nods shyly, not speaking. "Tell me of how you met." With some prodding, Emma finally begins relaying the tale, of how you and Djanna rescued her and fought off the Czarina, of how Djanna nearly died in doing so. Sylea casts a look at you - one you can't quite make out, but you feel you're being chastised, or perhaps it's only a guilty conscience - and you turn away, studiously staring ahead at the sparkling water ahead.

Emma continues, speaking of your adventures, her demeanor becoming more animated. You even think you hear the ghost of a smile in her voice. It vanishes when she starts talking about your encounter with the hunters... how terrified she was for your safety, and how desperately she wove her illusions to keep them from ganging up on you all. "I wasn't going to let them get hurt." she finishes quietly, and the dragon woman reaches over and ruffles Emma's hair gently.

"You didn't do anything more than what any of them - any of us - would have done for you in the same situation. You're a brave girl, Emma." The kitsune frowns, growing silent, but she doesn't pull away from the elder woman's hand.

Finally, you arrive at the harbor, and with Sylea's help spot the harbormaster ("Usually the most self-important looking prick with the biggest hat", she says).

"Hmm? Well, aren't we a motley looking crew." The man sniffs as if something foul had crossed his nostrils, looking down at the four of you. "Well, out with it. What can I do for you?" You look between the four of you, realizing just how scruffy you all look after the fight.

"Hey... can we get a boat? We need ta get back to the Elder's village." you say matter of factly, giving a hopeful smile and wag. His expression softens, and he grins.

"Well, aren't we an adorable, forward little thing. What's your name?"

"Nadia!" you smile, wag intensifying. He crouches down, extending his hand. You grip it in both hands and shake his hand vigorously.

"Quite the grip on you, girl. And your friends?"

"Oh! My sisters! Djanna and Emma... and my aunt, Sylea!" You gesture to each in turn. Emma doesn't respond to the human, Djanna nods, and Sylea smiles, showing the barest hints of her teeth. The harbormaster sweeps his hat from his balding head, bowing.

"A pleasure. I am Gerard St. Martise, harbormaster of Fireshad. Now, you are in the market for a boat, yes? Now, can you name the island and the village you would like to visit?"

Your smile, and your tail, droop.

"...what? I mean, it's just over there... or maybe that way? I..." You whine softly, your tail tucking down against your legs. You don't remember. Three days at sea, heading here, and you don't remember where you came from? You really aren't fit for being out in the wild. You look to Emma, frowning and whimpering. She sighs and looks at the sky for a moment, closing her eyes and turning herself this way and that, trying to orient herself.

"...about three days from... that way." She jerks a thumb behind her shoulder. "Through the Growling Torrent. A small fishing village." She nods, and Gerard frowns, motioning the four of you to follow him. He leads you to a podium in the center of the boardwalk, unfurling a map, tacking it down and plotting a route using Emma's general directions. He pinpoints a small dot, the name "Tail Bay" scrawled in faded ink beside it.

"That'd be the one, then. Unfortunately, we don't do much business with them, so we don't have major vessels heading that way with any frequency. You'd need to charter a private vessel, so you'll need to speak to somebody with their own boat. Should be no lack of salty bastar- gentlemen of fortune around here who'd not mind taking you on, but it might not be cheap." He turns again, running his gaze over the four of you, and your torn/ruined/burned clothing.

"Oh, we've got plenty of m-"

Sylea claps a hand over your mouth. "We'll be able to take care of it. Where should we start looking?"

"After the Festival of Torches last night, they're all probably sleeping off their good moods, if you know what I mean." He gives Sylea a knowing wink. She scowls at him and he balks, turning away. "You might try the public house, or one of the boarding houses further up the way."

"Is that like where Garush lives?" Djanna looks at you, and Emma nods along with you.

After getting directions from Gerard, you head along the boardwalk, small boats bobbing in the surf, moored to the docks. Here and there, a lone sailor stumbles along the decks, brown bottle in hand still in the throes of celebration from the night before. Still a few more vomit over the side, churning your stomach. You cover your ears until you've passed from earshot, Emma doing the same. She looks to be a bit more green around the cheeks than you, though.

Soon enough, you come to a converted warehouse, reminding you more than a little of the one from home. Sylea takes the lead, banging on the door roughly. You hear the scraping of boots on wood before, with a grumble, the door is wrenched open and a short, grouchy looking man looks up at the elder dragon woman. "What ye be wantin', now?"

"To hire a boat. Why else would we be here?" Sylea crosses her arms and the old man leans out the door to spit into the street.

"Hmph. So what, ye be wantin' ta talk t' one of me boarders? Well, then, ye be wantin' th' young goat then. C'mon, I'll show ye to 'is room." The man turns and steps back into the darkened environs, beckoning you onward. Sylea slips in after him, bending to enter through the door. The three of you follow after, and the man leads you to a ladder, leaned up against the wall.

"Up there, second door on th' left. Be warned, don' let 'im get ter talkin'. 'es got a way wit' words, that one." Sylea nods to the master of the house and climbs. She reaches the landing and steps over to the landing, the second floor of rooms stretching out. She motions for you girls to follow, helping you each across the gap in turn. Through the dim pseudo-hallway, to the second door down to the left you walk, and Sylea steels herself, but you're tired of waiting. You slip under her arm and knock loudly on the door. The elder dragon frowns, opening her mouth to speak, but it interrupted when the door opens.

"Oh, my... such lovely creatures have come to visit upon my doorstep!" A young man leans out the door, smiling brightly. His curly black hair holds close to his hair, the dark mass broken only by a pair of nubby yellow horns that poke from his brow, above his twinkling green eyes. He wears a deer-skin vest, several pendants of gold and silver hanging from his neck. He wears a heavy leather belt, laden with small pouches and a short, thin sword. Below his waste, his legs are swarthy and black, like those of a goat. "Oh, sweet visions descended from on high, what can Mal'ir Sea-Strider do for you?"
