Stage 86: The Past is Not Dead.

Er Yin's spell was designed to bring you people who might be willing to assist you in your causes. Up until this moment it has worked precisely as advertised: it would bring people to meet you who would be at least inclined to listen to your reasoning and who might chose to assist you in your goals.

It had never occurred to you that it has worked since before you met Reiha-san and Peta-chan; it may have also brought you Yuuhi and Shoko, as well as the strange God's-Eye nekomata Rie. It might have predisposed the detective from the Public Security Information Ministry to help. Even the person it brought you here this time admitted the spell brought her, but the problem is she's not particularly likely to help you. It's much more likely she will try and hurt you. Probably not kill though; you don't think she has that in her, and you have excellent reasons for believing so.

Kodachi Umetsumi is a kitsune-born eighteen year old, someone you went to school with. She is the keeper of an ancient blade, a family heirloom called Himegami-no-Kodachi, which means a couple of different things depending on how you write it. The weapon is a powerful kami, and you've used it yourself. You used it, as a matter of fact, to murder her older brother. That's why she's seeking revenge against you.

The problem of course, is WHY you killed her older brother. If it had been under orders, you would have said you'd killed him; an accident would have been accidentally killing him. A duel would have been sanctioned death as well. But you acted under your own will, and not in any honorable manner either. You stole the sword from him and plunged it through his back and into his heart. Yes, he'd struck you, but that wasn't why you killed him. Umetsumi knows exactly why you killed him, but she's no more at liberty to explain than you are. Because some things can't be explained or told.

Some secrets you take to the grave.

With Yuuhi-chan at your side, you've come to the beach between Araihama beach and the Mikimoto Pearl Diving Temple. Though it's not really a temple or an island, technically. Still you were here to contact your sister, Shoko, or Er Yin, who had left on your command to retreat to Ryutaku-ji where Shoko-san's father and the other remaining servants of Horobi could protect them. And it is here, on the beach where you failed to make contact with them, that you face one of the truly dangerous people in your life: someone you really don't want to kill at all.

Umetsumi swirls her ruby short-sword in a quick circle, facing you from fifteen feet away. She's definitely practiced with it; unlike Kushinada she's not going to depend on the sword itself to fight for her. She most assuredly could though. It's a potent kami in its own right. “Of all the places to meet you, a lonely beach in the evening is the last place I would have imagined it. But the spell told me to come here....and here you are.” Her golden-green eyes narrow, glowing faintly. You don't bother using any of the mystic vision eyes you normally might try; she's well protected against all of them, and with good reason. “Under other circumstances it might even be pleasant.”

You've not drawn any weapons; dressed in a short robe and your two-piece black and sapphire swimsuit and a pair of geta, you don't look threatening. But she's not going to believe that for an instant. Also with good reason. Yuuhi-chan has her nodachi out, but not drawn, and she's taking her cues from you for the moment. You wouldn't put it past her to cut Umetsumi-san down if the kitsune-born does anything too threatening though. You're quite pleased that she didn't take offense at the mild insult towards her kind Umetsumi uttered upon her arrival though.

[] “It could still be pleasant, you know, Umi-sama.”
[] “Aren't you curious why I had such a spell cast?”
[] “I hope your family didn't send you; that could become very awkward, Umi-san.”
[] “Sorry that you got caught up in it. You can leave and the spell will dissipate immediately.”
[] “I'm not sorry for killing him, Umetsumi-san. I can't be.”

[XX] “It could still be pleasant, you know, Umi-sama.”
[X] “Aren't you curious why I had such a spell cast?”
[X] “I hope your family didn't send you; that could become very awkward, Umi-san.”
[+] ~Why~ did you follow the spell?

You keep yourself calm, but not truly relaxed. You want her to know you're feeling threatened by her, that she has control over the situation. In a way she does, but not the way she would prefer or like. Allowing her to underestimate you is okay, in this situation, but it's much more important that she has the power. It will keep both of you safe from one another. “I sincerely hope the Kodachi Family hasn't sent you, Umetsumi-san. I would be unfortunate if that were the case.” Your slightly guarded pose seems to be reassuring to her.

She shakes her head, her obi-tied tail loop waving slightly in response to the motion. “No, they know nothing about this.” Her eyes glint, and you relax just a little. “This is only ever between you and I, Ryukusa-san.”

You stand up straight and Inau-kun relaxes just a little, and Umi-san seems to notice her for the first time. “I don't recognize your friend though. She wasn't at our school, I would have remembered.” Oh yeah, the other problem. Umetsumi was on the Leadership Committee, part of the School Council with Kiki-hime – at least, she had been, before the murder. It makes her a little harder to deal with in general, because you didn't get along with that type of person very well, being a total delinquent.

Inau-kun bows to Umetsumi politely, one hand remaining on her sword. “Tokei Isusangi, of Clan Ryuu. It is my pleasure to make your acquaintance, miss.” She rises and Umetsumi is a bit taken aback by her exquisite formality and strange accent. “Please call me Inau.”
>>
>>40968040
You can't help but smile a little, the demigod's politeness and friendly attitude going far to ease Umetsumi's ingrained ire towards you as she bows back politely. “You may call me Umetsumi, Inau-san. But I have business with Ryukusa-san. Please don't take it personally.”

Inau-kun glances at you, worried, but you incline your head slightly, and she relaxes. “I understand, but I am afraid that I have to tell you, I'm here to protect Ryukusa-sama's life. Her wife would be upset if I allowed any harm to come to the father of her child.”

….um. That you didn't plan for.

Umetsumi blinks in shock and then looks at you. Undoing the belt of your robe, you let it fall open, revealing you are, in fact, completely female. Not that she couldn't smell it on you. Just like you can smell the blood that stained her when she lost her innocence. “You have a wife?” Her surprise is understandable, perhaps, but it's still just a little insulting.

[XXX] A wife, two concubines, a subbe, and a domme, actually. And maybe a pet.
[XXX] Just nod; let her make her own inferences.
[XX] We haven't formalized it yet, but the kami did bless our marriage.
[+] The kami have given me great gifts....

You nod only once, indicating that it's absolutely true, but you don't say anything otherwise. Her brow wrinkles and her ears flick unhappily. Continuing to say nothing you let her wrestle with the implications – all of the implications – of that statement. Rather than decreasing her confusion mounts, and you can see that it's tearing her up inside even without water eyes.

Calmly you explain a little further. “My wife, two concubines, an uke, a seme, and perhaps a pet. There might be a few others involved, if they want to be, as well.” Inau-kun blushes and looks down. “My life is filled with precious jewels and treasures that I have found, and who have found me. They all matter to me, every one; I have but one wife, but she understand these are people whom I am needed by, and whom I also need.” Umi looks down, her hand tightening on the hilt of her sword. The kami in the blade isn't actually all that aggressively inclined towards you, despite that.

“The marriage hasn't been formalized though. But it was blessed by....” To your shock, the words come, though you hadn't expected them to at all. “....by Amaterasu-Omikami.” Inau-kun looks – IS – startled, and Umetsumi's anguish spills over into her expression.

“Inau-kun.”

She looks at you immediately. “Yes, aniki?”

“Go ahead. I'll be fine.” That nets you a worried look, and she studies Umetsumi-san hard for a moment, using something like Water Eyes or Fire Eyes, that isn't either. She doesn't seem to get any more of a reading than you would have, which attests to the thoroughness of Umetsumi's protections. “Out of earshot. Back placed to us.” That worries her even further.

“Aniki,” she protests softly, “I couldn't-”
>>
>>40968530
“Please. As a friend.” That shuts her up instantly, her claim that she couldn't face your family if Umetsumi hurt you silenced. She bows to you, deeply, and walks away, some distance down the beach. Umetsumi watches as Inau-kun leaves. You look at her seriously and then walk a little closer, to within seven feat – the range just at the edge of sword-fighting reach. “This doesn't have to be unpleasant between us, Umi-san.”

“Does she know?” 'She' clearly meaning your wife, and it comes out as a barbed, angry question. The hostility of the question isn't important to you; you shake your head. The confused, anguished expression flickers back.

“Not unless you told Kumatori Kiki the truth of why you no longer could serve on the council. I never told anyone.” You look into her eyes, seeing the pain in them. Six years of pain wrapped tightly and controlled utterly. “Not even in my prayers.” Her consternation grows, and only now does she lower her sword to her side.
>>
>>40968544
“So, you and Kiki-hime. That's....that's just like you, really.” You blush, just a little; for Umetsumi, you have no walls. It's only fair. “I don't want to forgive you. But I don't want to hurt her. She doesn't deserve that.”

You take a deep breath. “I can't die, Umi-san. I have something only I can do, and I have to protect Kiki-hime from the people who want to hurt her. That spell was created for a reason, a good reason.” She looks into your eyes, her pain a living, growing thing. “I'm only sorry I couldn't save you too. I haven't forgiven myself either.” It was murder, pure and simple.

But then, he deserved it.

As I'm reading it, we know it was murder, but it had to be done. We regret that it had to be done, but we do not believe that our actions were wrong.

We can't offer her our arm or our life, because we still have duties to our family and all those we have made promises to.

And, of course, asking her is she's really sure about her course of action would be doing her a disrespect.

[X] Ask her if there is any way you can make up for the pain you caused her.
[+] I didn't mean to hurt ~you~, only him, because he deserved it....and you know it.

She looks at you, the pain and anguish in her life a raw, open wound, you can't help but feel responsible for. You walk up to her, fearlessly, and she actually takes a step back, partly raising the Deep-Blood Short Sword. Without hesitation you step up to her, only a couple of feet between you and her. Softly, you ask her the question that there really isn't an answer for. But you ask it anyways.

“Umi-san....is there any way I can make up for the pain I caused you?” Purposefully you pitch your voice low and keep your dragon sapphire eyes upon hers. The anguish comes to a head, and it doesn't take a tactical genius to understand what is going to make her feel better. “I am sorry that I hurt you, Umi-san. But I can never, ever apologize for killing your brother. He deserved it.”

She drops the sheath to her kodachi and tears well up in her eyes.

“I killed him because he was hurting you.”

Her shriek is ear piercing at this distance, and the pain of the sword sliding into your gut is....actually it's really damn familiar to be honest. At least it's the other side this time, but your kidney is never going to forgive you. Your liver doesn't care, it gets all the alcohol it could ever want. This time, however, you don't merely cup the cheek of the person who stabbed you. You step forward, and wrap your arms around Umetsumi's shoulders, holding her tight against you as you ignore the sensation of the sword sliding deeper into your body.

Her heart-wrenching sobs aren't really for her brother....rather the nogitsune-child that was her half-brother. He was sixteen, and you found them in the stairwell on your way to the roof. She was crying, pitifully, calling for help that wouldn't come after school hours. At least, if some juvenile delinquent hadn't been avoiding her club activities to go smoke on the rooftop. He was much stronger than you were at the time, but a broken arm and bloodied nose from being backhanded down the stairs didn't stop you from taking the sword he'd stolen from her and running it through his heart.

Simple and basic murder. But you'll never, ever apologize for it.

Kodachi Umetsumi cries into your shoulder as you hold her close, the girl you first shared a kiss with, the girl you'd first killed for. Formative moments, those. She could never look you in the face again, and you didn't blame her at all. You lived with her secret and will continue to do so. But maybe now she can have some peace from it.

You let her cry herself out, and she backs away, stumbling a little. Falling to your knees, you draw the sword out quickly, holding the surge of blood that should have come with it in place, and maintaining the integrity of your organs. But the healing has already started; you can actually feel the flesh knitting together inside your body. You look down, and trace the wound, which is closing before your eyes.
>>
>>40969150
Taking slow, deep breaths seems to help; in less than a minute, you've healed from a wound that took nearly a week and kept you bed ridden for three days – and that was with help. That doesn't make the pain of the wounds being received or healing any less, unfortunately.

Umetsumi is looking at you, horrified at her own actions and stunned by the fact you're not dead.

[] Ouch.
[] Look up at her and offer her the sword back.
[] Smile faintly and sheathe the blade for her, thanking the kami for not making it worse.
[] “I really am sorry, Umi-san.”
[] stand up and hug her again. You hold the sword though.
>>
>>40968895

At least we know one thing for sure now.

Ryukusa has always had good taste.

>Is it too big, right now?

>>
>>40969554

I'm asking if it'll be ok for her to kiss now.
>>
>>40969448
Nah, no kissing. Even if the family is okay with it, that's just plain mean to the girl.
>>
>>40969554
If she actually would want to be a part of the family I'd be open to try. But in the end, her happiness is most important and either the harem part or all their baggage could easily be too much for her to be happy with Ryukusa. We definitely need to help her out though, either way.
>>
I say we hook her up with Inau instead.
>>
[X] Ouch.
[X] Smile faintly and sheathe the blade for her, thanking the kami for not making it worse.
[X] “I really am sorry, Umi-san.”

The pain is really intense, made worse by each breath. It's mostly the kidney, really; even the liver is coping pretty well. Controlling your blood and liquids makes a massive difference, since it keeps the bile from your gall bladder from spilling onto your liver. She got the major artery too – you'd have bled to death in no more than a minute without your power. “You're really very good, Umi-san,” you murmur absently.

Really, you're very glad it was Inau-kun and not Yuuhi-chan with you; you don't think that Umi-san could have survived a berserk samurai trying to kill her. Still, you sheathe the blade and bow to it and it's protector and wielder, thanking the kami for it's consideration. A faint warmth in your hands suggests that you are welcome.

Opening your eyes you look up at the tear streaked face of your friend, and whisper softly, “I truly am sorry, Ko-chan.” She puts a hand over her mouth, stifling a hysterical giggle, her eyes too wide, too bright. It takes her a moment, but she takes the sword in trembling hands, though the instant she takes hold of the weapon the tremors in her hands stop. No where else though.

“You really can't die,” she whispers softly.
>>
>>40969581
I would think we need to talk to her a little bit more first so we don't force it all upon her. But maybe it would work.
>>

Standing, you shake your head. “I have too much work to do. That was what the spell was for, to bring people to help me protect Japan. The Yakuza clans that are associated with the spirit world have done something terrible, and I have to stop them. There's a price to it, and I need help.” You take a deep breath, and trace the smooth skin of your stomach.

Her voice is subdued, still awestruck, or still in shock over letting go of her pain; you can't tell which. Maybe you don't want to know which. “What price is that, Ku-chan?”

It hurts to hear that name, but you ignore it.

[XX] Ask her if she's sure she wants to know.
[?] The destruction of a large portion of Japan.
or
[?] Tell her to make her family and people safe and how to do so, no more.

You look into her eyes, and the horrible, life altering pain she was suffering is gone. So are her carefully kept shield and protections from the various sight-powers. But you don't need them with Umi-san. The raw, open wounds in her spirit are there, though, and you aren't so sure this would be a good idea, despite the spell that Er Yin crafted allowing freedom to choose.

“Are you sure you want to know, Umi-san? I've caused you enough pain.”

Umetsumi looks down, seriously thinking about the question. When she lifts her head and nods, you close your eyes. “When the time comes, a lot of Japan is just going to be destroyed. The coastline, and Tokyo especially. But not just those places. It will be multiple disasters, all across Japan. I need help to keep the casualties down to a minimum.”

The look in her eyes is fearful, but she presses the questions. “What is going to cause it, Ryukusa-san?” That brings a faint smile to your lips.

“Well, me, mostly, in the process of protecting my family.” Her eyes widen. “I should have been in Yoshino and Habari's class.” The few demigods who were in Celestial High. Understanding dawn and she suddenly looks worried. “I was supposed to be, but the head of my Clan messed everything up. And I mean, everything. So....I have to fix it. And it's going to take causing something worse than the Kanto quake to do it.”
>>
>>40970085
You step close to her and take her shoulders in your hands, careful of your talons. “Move your family to the hillsides. Not near any volcanoes or faults, or anywhere a hurricane might cause widespread destruction. It won't be as bad in eastern Hokkaido, but it's going to be all over Japan. So....remember that.” You take a deep breath, unsure if you should have told her the truth.

For her part, she is staring at you, her expression unreadable. You look back at her, and get ready to harden your heart, when she steps close and kisses your cheek, like she did so many years ago. When you first confessed to liking her. “Take care of your family, Ryukusa-san. They....Kiki-hime is a very lucky woman.” You lower your head as Umi-san turns and walks away slowly, untying the sash that coils her tail tight.

Even thought you don't know if she will help you or not, if anyone deserves some peace, it's Umetsumi. You turn around and find yourself face to face with Inau-kun, who is looking at you sympathetically. “Thank you for not making me tell Kiki-hime I let you get killed, aniki.”

I really think we shouldn't let Umi go on that note. So I'll vote this:

[XX] Sorry – it really was personal.
[X] ….I don't know what the fuck I'm supposed to feel right now, Inau-kun.
[x] Thank you for being my friend.

The conflicting feelings you have are trouble. Usually even at your worst you can tell what you are feeling. The only time you were really having issues was....

….

When Kiki-hime confessed to you.

“Stay....stay here,” you tell Inau-kun softly, gesturing in the Ryo manner. She watches with concern as you bolt down the beach, catching up to Umetsumi almost instantly. Throwing your arms around her you hold her tightly, hugging her from behind. Hot tears burn your eyes....and you let them fall, as you so rarely do for anyone. Because if anyone deserves your tears, it's this person. Perhaps not one of your precious people, but a person who means something to you, even if you don't quite understand what.

“Ko-chan....if you ever need me, if you ever need my help....pray for it. I'll hear them. Somehow, I'll hear them.” You don't make the promise aloud....but you do promise yourself. You owe her too much not to.

Her hands come up and her tail slides around your waist. You feel hot water fall on your bare arms; kitsune-child tears. “Hai. Hai, Ku-chan.” You hold her for a moment longer, and she holds your arms to her, her tail sliding up and down your lower back, twining with yours when you slip your tail to meet hers. Finally you relax, and she steps away slowly, her tail holding yours until you are too far apart to maintain the gentle clasp.

You watch her, and wipe your tears dry, sniffling softly.

Kamidamnit. It's not fair. You're not even sure what ~it~ is.
>>
>>40970955
Inau-chan waits patiently for you to walk back to her, and it takes you almost that long to calm your mind enough to cope. Washing your face clean as well, you smile uncertainly at your huntress, who gently takes your hand when you reach for hers. “Gomennasai gozimasu, Inau-kun. I....I don't think it gets any more personal than that.” She nods slowly, not understanding but simply accepting. You let choked laughter slip from your lips. “I don't even know what the fuck I'm supposed to be feeling now.”

Inau-kun smiles and says the only thing that could possible make you feel any better. Less worse maybe. Well, it distracts you.

“I think you should concentrate on establishing contact with Er Yin.”

There are definitely words for that feeling. Dread, fear, worry, confusion, dread again.

[X] Go back to the camp, discuss it with the others.
[X] You have allies in the ocean to call upon – see if you can get their help.

Taking Inau-kun's hand you draw her towards the beach. “Ever caught a ningyo, Inau-kun?” you ask seriously, as you head towards the dark waters. You can see for miles along the ocean, and the waves are slow and large, the tidal forces strong. The moon is high, and only a waxing quarter, but it's more than enough for you, and you suspect that Inau-kun doesn't have any problem in the dark either.

Inau-kun blushes, something you more feel than see since you're leading her. “Ah, do you mean a doll or a mermaid, Ryukusa-sama?”

You pause and look back at her curiously. “Depends. Have you caught a doll and haven't told me about it? I was under the impression boy's schools were pretty strict on that sort of thing.”

The androgynous huntress looks down. “Well....several mermaids came up to a boat I was on once,” she admits. “They were very....um, pretty. And they were kind of....well....teasing.”

“Mermaids don't reproduce like that. They were probably hungry.” You're not entirely sure what they eat, though you have heard they're capable of eating people. That's legend, rather than fact. Which is pretty pathetic for a spirit-child to say, perhaps, but there it is. “Don't let go of my hand. I'll keep you warm too.” You walk out fearlessly into the water, tugging your robe off and throwing it nowhere. “And you won't be able to talk, so don't be alarmed.”
>>
>>40971692
“Yes, aniki,” she says, a little worried. Still, she follows you fearlessly into the waters. You do have to raise the heat of her blood to counter the water; it's positively frigid here.

It's actually quite beautiful, between the glowing sea foam, the rippling moonlight, and the squid and jellyfish darting about and floating slowly by. While you could probably do this more quickly if you didn't have Inau-kun with you, leaving one of your family alone is counter to your own orders. Tempting fate as well. You swim swiftly, though not at the insane speeds you showed Kiki-hime or Kiku-chan, towards the ocean.

It doesn't take you long; there are a few junks here, and you spot one that looks likely. There are a trio of mermaids there, playing a strange form of tag though the torn hull and broken spires of the old junk. It doesn't take long to get their attention; especially for Inau-kun, who seems to be subject of much interest. Two blue-and-green ones, and a strangely mottled black and white one. They really are like koi in their colorations.

But now you have a real problem: communication.

[] The Void may work with them.

[X] Draw on the ocean floor using water.
[x] Show them your left hand.

The mermaids seem unduly interested in Inau-kun; not her clothing or her weapon, but her herself. They trace her tattoos, and seem very interested in the bindings about her arms and legs, and especially her chest.

You'd feel jealous, if it weren't for the fact that poor Inau-kun is obviously very troubled by the fact that a trip of naked fish-women are interesting in partially undressing her.

Still, their interest lets you guide them to the ocean floor, where you catch their attention again by swirling a current around them and bending it to your will. They seem to be able to see or detect the current somehow, other than merely by touch. But when you start using it to draw upon the ocean floor, you have their complete attention.

It doesn't take too long to essentially make a series of images: pictures of Er Yin, Shoko, and Jinyuu; the cloud that Shoko travels on, and their figures on it; the Palace of the Swamp Turtle. The ningyo seem fascinated by the pictures at first, but they don't seem too bright. In fact, they quickly lose interest and go back to circling and gently touching and teasing Inau-kun, who looks at you desperate for help.

[X] Retreat in a relaxed and calm fashion. No need to panic.

You know, sometimes you wonder if your enemies are as stupid as they seem to think you are.

If they were all of one species, you could probably figure it was just a mating thing, or perhaps just a food hunt. As it is, there are several variates that aren't even indigenous to Japan, to say nothing of diurnal. The fact that a number of them are poisonous isn't as critical to you – or Inau-chan, since she's with you and holding onto your arm tightly – as it would be to someone who couldn't control both the venom and the blood it is introduced to. For the most part, it's mostly a pretty wall of wriggling snakes headed for you. Add to that the fact that you're in your element and that you've recovered a good amount of your Shen, and you're about in as much danger as the average shark might be.

Which is to safely say, none.

On the other hand, your visibility is shit inside a massive snake migration, and they're completely disrupting and sense of movement you might pick up in the water. THAT is a real danger, because a few dragonettes or dragonnes and a few oni could make life extremely difficult for you right now. It is this fact which prompts you to pull Inau-kun close, pressing your bosom to hers and kissing her lightly on the lips to distract and calm her. She melts in your arms, and you hold her firmly. Only then do you move carefully and slowly with the swarm of snakes, taking care not to aggravate them. Or to let Inau-kun's nosebleed attract any sharks.

You do note one interesting thing; they're slowly but surely trying to guide you off course. You're currently headed towards the beach, but the snakes are casually and subtly moving away from the beach. The tidal pull of the waves hitting the beach is a dead giveaway; your senses underwater are far more acute than most any other Water dragonette you've ever met, and in the ocean, well forget them.

[X] Void Eyes on, see reality.
[X] Continue retreat, ignore snakes.

You continue swimming towards the shore, rather than following the snakes. On the other hand....opening Void Eyes, you get the same intense flood of too much information. In the Barrier there is no feng shui or living creatures to interfere. Here, the ocean is teeming with power of all sorts, to say nothing of life and the water-wind movement and the massive amounts of Chi that can generate. Still....

You work to ignore the movements of feng shui, and the Chi of the snakes as well. It's easy to isolate what that looks like. The life force of the snakes too, you have a billion examples of it. Shen, so infinitesimal it may as well not exist, compared to the beacon of yourself and Inau-kun.

There it is – Shen energy. Spiritual power, magic that isn't sorcery. You can see lines of it, stirring the snakes, guiding them from above. Long filaments drawing them in a slow clockwise direction. They're guiding it towards more intense number so lines from above, which gather in power and thickness the closer to the imagined center point. The center point, you can't determine how much power is there or what is going on because there's just too much to see beyond a few dozen feet, and it's further away: at least a quarter mile. If you followed the snakes, you'd end up there, and in whatever trap is set.
>>
File: Musumi Kanako..jpg (102 KB, 1240x1753)
102 KB
102 KB JPG
>>40973406
But the lines coming from above....those have just one source. You drift up, along with the snakes for just a moment, and thin the number of snakes to a few dozen, enough to ignore as you trace the lines back to their point of origin. A dragonette, a Water dragonette, but not like yourself, not an oceanic dragonette. Still, her power over Water has the snakes confused as all hell, and she could probably manage something nasty in the center point. You can see her Pearl clearly: she's strong, advanced in the techniques of Clan Ryo, though no sorceress. You can't recognize her; you just don't understand enough of what you're seeing to figure that out.

Closing your Void Eyes, you get a much clearer look at her. Musumi Kanako, one of the other families involved in Clan Ryo. She's technically your elder in the clan, but you sincerely doubt she's a match for you as you are now. Not to say she couldn't kill you if she got the drop on you or put you in a disadvantageous position, though. At this point, you're pretty sure she hasn't seen you; she's using her power hard, and all her will is bent on it.

[] Just go rejoin your family – make this her failure.
[] Let Inau-kun put an arrow up her skirts.
[] Do a high leap, kick her for yardage, and then escape!
[] This is why you carry throwing knives.
[] Just blow her skirt up over her head and leave – she's not an issue.

[X] Just blow her skirt up over her head and leave – she's not an issue.
[X] Just go rejoin your family – make this her failure.

You swim a little closer to the surface and Inau-kun looks up, her own Eyes glowing and seeing quite clearly through just about everything, you have the feeling. Oh. Huntress. That makes a lot of sense actually.

Darting up to the surface you lift your hand out of the water and send a gust of hot wind rising from beneath her. You slide below the snakes again and make you way further, counting down in your head. When you're some distance away, close to sore, and the count is nearly ended, you release Inau-chan and slide to the surface.

“Watch,” you whisper softly, slipping your arms about her waist, your tail keeping you both afloat easily. Well, tail and your own magic.

She holds your arms about her waist, watching the far-off dragonette, giggling as you nuzzle her neck playfully. Kanako-san is so caught up in her magic that she doesn't notice the change in temperature until it's a billowing rush of wind that literally blasts her skirts, petticoats, and her hair into a massive uproar, exposing her frilly panties and making Inau-chan gasp in shocked delight at the joke.

As she shrieks in shock you dive, dragging Inau-kun deep into the water and towards the shore. Speeding you launch yourself out of the water and sweep Inau-kun into a princess carry as you land deep in the woods, unharmed and free to rejoin your family.

Inau-kun is still laughing when you reach the others, who haven't had any trouble, other than worrying over you.

Guys, don't leave someone sent to hurt us walk away.

We can't let her report to Oba-shit.

A few quick answers: Yui was Ryukuza's first kiss on the lips. She did trade kisses with Umi-san, but they were cheek kisses. They were pretty shy, even with each other. they'd just started discovering lilies when Umi-san's brother flipped out.

That was not Ryukusa's first kill. Her first kill was at the age of ten, and she discusses it even less than she discusses her situation with Umi.

Concerning self sacrificing choices:

The willignness to suffer pain and harm for another is meaningful to spirit-children, who have a slightly skewed sense of such things comared to ordinary Japanese.

Because they can often survive such issues as belly-cutting or cope with a missing limb, the offer of it is still meaningful, and going through with such an offer despite the actual results is meaningful as well. It's more an act of humility and the humbling of oneself to actually make such an offer, whether taken or not, that truly matters.
>>
Thank you for reading and playing.

Any questions that how up will be answered next thread.
>>
>>40973962
But wouldn't Ryukusa's gesture be less because it meant less to Ryukusa, or would be it the frank offering of such a thing that would help heal Umetsumi's pain?
>>
>>>>40974004
I'm unclear on Ryukusa and Umetsumi's relationship - there are a bunch of obvious hints that they were pretty close to say the least, but the fact that Ryukusa finding her and the bro was apparently random which seems quite the coincidence if so, as well as unnecessary, and that they never met afterwards, combined with their apparent lack of anything in common to explain how they'd get along, muddles it a bit for me. The whole kiss confusion doesn't help.
>>
One thing I'm kinda curious about, was Umetsumi's brother always going to be a nogitsune, or did that change occur to you after the whole Yuuhi/Inau mix up?
>>
>>40974178
Seems like they were kinda close, and the both have and had a deep connection, then Umetsumi's half-brother found out and did something pretty horrible. And then Ryukusa solved the problem as best she could.
>>
>>40974228
Yeah that's what makes most sense to me, but the comment about them being completely different (which is hardly a barrier in fiction, but usually because they find common ground which we didn't see) and the fact that if so, narratively Ryukusa has a great reason for finding their fight rather than 'random delinquency' which seems inelegant is throwing me off.
>>
Should we tell Akari to prepare red belly jean for Inau and possibly Yuuhi?
They'll need rings, too.

I think the point of that was to show how much Ume mirrored Kiki, yet thinges were simply never meant to be. She was Ryukusa's "almost, but not quite".

Yes, he was always her half-brother nogitsune-born.

>>40974095
Suffering pain is still suffering pain. also it's a dragonette debasing herself before another. The act means a lot to Ryukusa despite the lack of lethality.

>>40974178
>>40974228
>>40974283
Remember, Ryukusa wasn't born a dragonette entirely - she was born a demigod and trained to not be one. She was hero material before she became a thug, and the universe pushed her towards heroism right from the start.

Demigods, in case you hadn't noticed, are very....attractive people. Even the ugliest ones have some kind of allure. That Umetsumi and Ryukusa found one another and developed a close relationship was almost inevitable. Umi-san suffering whatever her half-brother tried to do to her (and several anons have guessed at what happened) was almost as inevitable. Ryukusa acted on instinct rather than with forethought, as befitting her youthful nature, and she stopped Umi-san's brother the only way she knew how (or could, he was much older and she lacked her powers).

That not only ended their relationship through the shame Umi-san suffered but with the brutality that Ryukusa was capable of. It was the main reason she did not want Kiki-hime to see her kill anyone.

As a side note, in Japan speaking of a shameful thing is far more shameful than actually suffering through a shameful thing. Hence Ryukusa and Umetsumi's hedging around the subject, even to themselves. Especially to themselves. .
