You fly down with your brother and Chi-chi, Goku and Krillin not far behind, the monkey boy in the outfit he got from Trip and Krillin in his yellow monk outfit. You see a long line of people at Baba's Palace, longer than usual. Several groups of martial arts schools and several seemingly rich folks, dressed like they've found a way to grow money on trees. Which would probably cause problems, thinking about it. Then again, if you COULD do that then- brobro pokes you to break your train of thought. You see Goku run up to one of the people standing in line, a woman wearing a yellow hat with orange details, simple yellow robes with slight orange details over a white one, and a tall staff.

"Trip! Hahaha! It's good to see you again." he starts bouncing at the ground around her.

"Son Goku, ah, it is good to see you too." she says in a rather calm and gentle manner. The woman then looks at you and your friends. "And am I correct to assume these are the comrades you have told me about?"

"Yep! These are my friends!" he quickly runs back over and grabs you and Krillin, pulling you both to meet her as Chi-chi and Acer run along as well. "Everybody, this is Trip."

The woman sighs a little and smiles. "Trip-i-ta-ka, Son Goku. Still can't quite say that part, huh?" The monkey boy rubs the back of his head with a little embarrassed grin as he nods. She pats his head and bows to you all. "Well, that is my title, at least. Xuanzang Genjo Sanzo, I guess you could say I am a traveling monk." She places a hand forward and bows to you all.

Turtle School Master and World Martial Arts Champion!" The woman chuckles softly in amusement. Your brother and Krillin keep things proper, while Chi-chi mimics you a little.

The lady pats you on the head. "Just as... enthusiastic as he claimed you are, Maple Mahogany. It is good to finally meet the friends Son Goku has told me so much about during our previous journey."

"NEXT!" you hear the familiar voice of the little pink ghost call. A rich couple steps forward, conversing with themselves. Trip steps forward as well as the line moves.

"Why are you here, Trip?" Goku tugs at her robe a little. "Did you lose something?"

The woman frowns and shakes her head. "I am here due to something that... I believe your friends have picked up on. There has been a large amount of demonic activity recently, centered in one location. I wish to know my foes intentions before I attempt any sort of action against them. Perhaps it will glean insight into the true nature of this incident."

Acer raises an eyebrow. "So, you can sense ki, or read minds, or something?"

"Perhaps not as well as you two can. It is more... subtle, for me, but useful nonetheless." Trip gives a shrug.

"So what do you know about the demons?" you ask as you stretch a little, Goku doing the same.

"They have... you could say 'broken certain rules' at the behest of the Demon King. That much I know." the woman frowns. "None of the truly powerful demons have stepped forward, perhaps because they are not aware, perhaps because they do not care. Either is fortunate."

"NEXT!" the pink ghost shouts as the rich couple leaves, a school of martial artists all wearing masks stepping in.

You look at your brother, sharing a quick telepathic conversation, and then fly up to the woman and ask her quietly, "Is there... any connection to a certain 'King Piccolo?'"

She shakes her head no, but the way she does it gives the clear impression that the answer is not any better. "The current Demon King's name is... Shura. A being of immense power."

"Demons are rarely nice, Goku." Krillin tells him. You swear you hear Spike sneeze.

Telepathically, you ask her what she knows about King Piccolo. She says that it is very little, in fact you know more than she does, but seems to know for a fact that this "Shura" person is on another level of strength.

"NEXT!" the pink ghost calls, the masked martial artists all leaving in shame. Look like she's up next.

"Think you'll need some help, Trip?" the monkey boy asks.

"I know that Baba's Fortunes are... not easy to come by." she looks away, slightly embarrassed.

"R-right this way!" it floats off, all six of you following. As you enter the room, Baba approaches. The old lady and young both discuss things for a moment, Trip explaining that she does not have the cash necessary to pay the fee, but she is willing to go through the trials. She mentions that you have offered to help her as well.

"Hmm... I knew this would happen eventually." she says as she looks at you and Acer, then at Trip. "The purpose of the trials, the alternative to the fee, is to test your skills, prove your worth. However, all five of you could easily handle my trials with the skills you have now. All except..." she looks at Goku, then gives a smirk. "...perhaps I can make an arrangement."

"What kind of arrangement, auntie Baba?" you ask her with a friendly smile.

"One million Zenni and two trials." she chuckles in a way that seems like it'd be quite an ordeal.

The wait seems to take a while, long enough for you to decide to put forth some effort training. You first ask Chi-chi if you can exchange knowledge of her ki cutting technique, the Power Slicer, for the Ki Jan Ken. She's more than happy to oblige. It takes far less time to get her to master your technique than it does for you to master hers, as most attempts seem to only throw a sort of blast. She explains the idea of compressing the energy, keeping it flattened. It takes a lot of work, and while you manage it, it'll take some time to completely master it. It's slower, and while it can cut its range is more limited than hers. Still, the fact that it fires off so quickly will come in handy.

You then start talking with Trip, seeing if she has something she might want to exchange with you. Almost immediately the topic turns to magic, with your learned spells and the techniques Trip has learned as a monk. While most of the skills she's learned seem to require intense meditation, there is one she is willing to try and share immediately: the ability to heal others with your ki. Semi-magical in nature, it's still the easiest thing to pick up from her, and in exchange you demonstrate your friend Yamcha's Wolf Fang Fist. Shyly she explains she reluctant to engage in combat directly, though you tell her that it's still a useful skill to have. She... manages it, but not nearly as well as Yamcha or you can.

Your brother meanwhile teaches Krillin Yamcha's Spirit Ball technique in exchange for the Destructo Disk, spending the rest of the time talking with Chi-chi. Finally, Baba returns.

"It has been settled, then. Undine, I thank you for your cooperation in this. You are up."

"Undine?" you, Goku, and Acer all repeat. Suddenly, the water around the area begins to swirl, then seems to leap out and takes a humanoid shape on the arena. You can't seem to get a reading on it. Odd.

"Who is up first?"

"Unfortunately for you, boy, the latter is rather difficult for me." Undine tells him with confidence. Your brother gulps.

"You can do it, brobro!" you shout.

"Come on, Acer!" Chi-chi cheers alongside you.

Baba clears her throat. "Begin!"

Acer immediately tries to rush her, trying to gauge her movements. She effortlessly dodges around him, water flowing along and around him. In frustration, he tries for an energy attack, his Revenant Driver. Undine merely flows around it before it connects. However, your brother quickly keeps up the pressure, appearing behind her and launching a Kamehameha, and adding some fire magic to it to the surprise of Goku, Chi-chi and Krillin. Undine avoids this too, but seems far more concerned of it hitting her.

"Well... looks like you have some surprises up your sleeves." she comments with a surprising amount of enthusiasm. "That could have hurt."

You grit your teeth. She's toying with him. Telepathically, you contact your brother. 'You must fight water LIKE water. You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip and it can crash. Become like water, brother.'

'What movie did you take that from?' he accuses.

'No idea!' you admit.

Acer stops and follows your advice. Undine tries to go on the offensive, and your brother focuses on her movements. Where once she was effortlessly dodging him, now he was effortlessly dodging her. They both back up.

"You're a better fighter than I thought you'd be." Acer admits. "But I'm not a Tournament Finalist because of my good looks."

Undine smirks. "Flirting won't get you anywhere, boy~"

"...shut up." he says with a blush. Acer then brings his hands together and seems to float upwards. "All right... let's see how you like this one! PHANTOM FLARE!" What seems like a wall of flame explodes around your brother, blinding everyone and filling the arena. When you can finally see again, Undine is weakly trying to hold her shape together, steam rising from her body. "Ah, woops..."

"I... I give..." she mutters and slowly makes her way to the water. Acer then collapses, panting heavily.

A person with a fox mask and... a halo above his head. Just like your teacher had. The monkey boy sniffs at the air, somewhat calmed by the person. He seems strong, but not as strong as any of you.

"This one has given me a special request. He would like to fight Goku."

"I'll be done quick, Maple!" he gives with a wide grin, Trip adding to the wishing of good luck to him. Stepping onto the ground, Goku gives a respectful bow, as does his opponent. "You know, you remind me of someone, mister..."

"I get that." the dead person says. "Now... let us begin."

As the two fight, you lean out towards the water. "Heeeey, Undine, are you still there?" The water spirit pokes her head out again. "Those were some impressive tricks, think you could ever teach them to us?"

"Sorry, most of that is innate. I can no more explain that to you than you can explain how to breathe to me." she moves around the lake, approaching closer. "Though you may be able to learn how to control water quite easily, if you're as talented as your cute little brother over there."

"Stop that." Acer glares as his face glows bright red. You smirk and telepathically tease him about him getting even more flustered over Chi-chi confirming that she saw him blush. 'Yeah yeah, laugh it up sis. Your day will come.' He then turns to look at Goku's match. It's about this time you finally notice that the fighter has a Power Level of 1005. Not as strong as Izumi, but tough. Then it starts climbing, along with Goku's.

The aura fades around the man, and he seems far more exhausted from it. Goku struggles to stand at first, but then lunges at him, trying to gain the upper hand. He knocks his opponent down... and then the man grabs Goku's tail. The monkey boy goes limp. "I thought I told you to train this too."

"W-wuhAAAOW!" Goku shouts as he's slammed into the ground by the man. Okay what the hell is going on? How did... You immediately delve into the man's mind.

'Oh my boy, come on, you are stronger than this, don't let up on your grandpa just yet...'

He's physically exhausted, you can tell, from that technique. Just enough, JUST ENOUGH, that Goku regains some strength for a moment, kicking him in the arm and then the face, knocking him down and cracking the mask.

"Ahh... owww..." Goku holds his tail, blowing on it. "H-how did... how did you know?"

The man starts laughing. "Amazing. Truly amazing, Goku. Well, I give up." He removes the fractured mask. Goku's eyes go wide and start to water.

"GRANDPA!" he shouts as he rushes to the man, crying into his chest as they embrace. It's... the first you've ever seen him so emotional. After all this time alone...

"That was a risky move, Gohan. You might want to be more careful next time." Baba comments. "You're lucky that didn't take up any of your time left." The man laughs, hugging Goku tight as the boy continues to sob, and then calls you all over.

"So many friends he's made. Hello there."

She makes a graceful bow behind you, holding her staff carefully so it doesn't bump in into you, Chi-chi, or Krillin. Amused by your little stunt, Undine even adds a little splash effect behind you all.

Acer stares in disbelief. "You're infectious, sis. Like a virus."

"Thank you!" you take his intended snarky insult as a compliment.

"Oh my, hahaha!" Gohan approaches you all and bows respectfully, Goku clapping. "And three girls, I must say Goku, quite impressive. Which one is your..." the dead man nudges his grandson in the arm and winks.

"Huh?" the monkey boy just tilts his head in confusion.

"Mister Gohan, what exactly was that technique you used?" you ask.

"A powerful, sacred art. I learned it while training with my new master in the world beyond, King Kai."

He seems for you to motion to read his mind to learn more. You do so and... are surprised by what you find. While Gohan seems to think of the god as a bit goofy, he has tremendous respect for him, and the fact that he requires one to have a sense of humor before training them... well, you can certainly agree to that.

"If you're all done with this little reunion, I do have a fortune to tell." Baba floats over, eyeing Trip. The woman gives an embarrassed bow and apology.

"He has more than a few hours left, but first let me do this, Maple." she says with a hint of annoyance. Baba looks into her crystal ball and chants. In the ball, a pair of doors appear, with demons marching out of them slowly, all of them laughing. You see an odd sword lodged in the side of one, keeping it held open.

"Well, that seems simple. All we have to do is take that sword out and everything will be fine." your brother comments.

"It will not be that simple, Acer. That blade is kept in place by Shura's power. He must be defeated in order to close the doors once more." Baba explains, an image of what you assume to be him appearing. Another image appears, of a gigantic-looking blue demon dressed in green and an almost human one next to him, with pale purple skin, pinkish hair, and a blue outfit, the second appearing to be female. They are arguing with another female demon, but all you can see of her is white hair and blue skin.

A lot of Dragon Ball is expanded upon in filler, especially earlier on. Did you know that Pilaf didn't appear in the manga until near the end of the Hunt for the Dragon Balls? While in the show he actually has a lot to do. Hell the anime even shows Goku and Chi-chi's kinda adorable, kinda awesome quest to save the Ox King's kingdom and actually get married. Chi-chi especially kinda feels more like someone Goku WOULD get along with and live together with during it. Meanwhile Toriyama himself has said rather bluntly that he's terrible at writing romance. Which to be honest is probably to the series' benefit, at times. Kept Dragon Ball from becoming the... well, I'm sure you're all aware of some of the issues certain popular modern shounen have with depicting romance.
