"Free beer? Seriously?" Tuile blinks.
"That must be a plan that Jack made." Yuuki crosses her arms. "I have no idea what we're going to do when everyone realizes that there is no free-"
Immediately, Aligot shushes her.

There's a part of you that wants to dismiss Jack's extremely simplistic plan, but then you notice Tuile's mouth watering.
You are Madeleine. Just 'Madeleine'. You've come to the edge of no-where to find villagers that have been kidnapped. Really, you wouldn't have cared under normal circumstances, but Jack seemed determined to at least put a stop to the force that has been causing it.
That's just like Jack, caring about others while putting on a tough face. That's why you lov-

"Hey, what are you going to do when you find Jack?" Cody interrupts your train of thought.
"END HIM." The not-at-all happy bartender bellows.
You giggle to yourself. Speaking of which, Jack has gone out to gather as many people as possible to lead out of this village in one big group.

"I'm worried we're attracting the wrong kind of people." The small kid known as 'Dorje' points out. In fact, he's pointing toward the back of the room.
Some men back there, who are CLEARLY guards trying to cover themselves with soiled rags, are worriedly shifting objects around under their clothing. They're very clearly swords and axes, by the looks of it. Maybe now might be a good time to put a stop to them before they decide to make the first move.

>No, wait for them to try something. There are four heroes here right now, there is no way they would try.

From the looks of it, there are at least five to ten guards total. Some of them look to be the soldier types.
Those soldiers types are having a better time keeping their act together. It's still clear that they don't belong among the crowd, but at the very least they're standing straight and keeping their weapons hidden.

Counting the number of soldiers that have managed to slip into the crowd, you see six of them.

Four of them sit down at one of the tables, whispering amongst one another. The other two seem to be their watch. You can't do anything about the guards that have gathered on the other side of the room, but you may be able to do something about the soldiers.

"Hey Cody, Beers"
"Eh? what for?"
"Trust me on this one."

You take out a small blue bottle from your pouch. You figured you may be going into hostile territory, so you prepared an entire bag of combat venoms. This blue potion is extremely fast-acting. It just has the slight problem of having to be ingested.

Gently, you place several drops in each drink and carefully balance all of them onto a serving tray. You borrow an apron from behind the bar and let your hood drop to your shoulders. It's not the best waitress disguise in the world, but it'll do.
Carefully minding the wooden floor, you slide toward their table.

"Any of you gentlemen care for a drink?"
No answer.
"Please, you need to keep yourselves from getting thirsty around here. The free beer will only last so long."

Begrudgingly, each one takes a mug from you. You disappear into the crowd just as they each take their first sip.
Three.
Two.
One.

Six sharp pops fill the air. Looking behind you, where the soldiers once sat are only fluffballs.
The guards on the other side of the room take that as their cue.

>Green potion, try to get close enough to prick one.
>Red potion, just splash some in their general direction.

You examine your razor-sharp claws. Slowly, you let them unsheath from your fingers as-
Suddenly, they retract back into sharp fingernails. You just remembered something, Jack probably wouldn't be too pleased if he knew that you were going head-to-head with armed guards while there were perfectly capable heroes around.

You should stay low and keep examining the crowd. While the heroes will immediately paint targets on themselves, it is up to you to cross-check anyone and see who else is planning something.

Slowly, you weave through the crowd as panic and chaos erupts. The villagers quickly start to disperse away from the big mean guys with swords. Dorje and Yuuki immediately spring into action as Cody stands up on the bar, scanning the crowd. He seems to be looking for something.
You fall back into the shadows of the masses. You see some other guys near the door that aren't at all surprised at the sudden and abrupt outburst. To the contrary, they seem to be pushing and shoving anyone who tries to exit back.
So, they're keeping people from going outside, huh?

At the edge of the room is Louise and that blonde haired knight from Gallete whose name you forgot. You think it's 'Odelly' or 'Odey' or something like that. They're both confused in the middle of the room, one clutching her giant axe while the other nervously grips at a dagger. Her ears are laying back almost all of the way as she nervously tries to discern what is going on.

Okay, first thing is first, you need to get those kids out of the middle of the room. They're obvious, and no one else is keeping an eye on them.
Quickly, you slither over to them. They nearly jump when they see you approaching.

Louise smiles real big when she sees you, and lowers her axe. Odey still has her dagger raised at the ready.
"Come on you two." You take Louise by the hand. "You should be behind the bar where it's safe."

Odelle keeps both of her hands clasped on her dagger as she worriedly searches around her. Louise seems ecstatic to see you, but you can't hear what she's saying.
Gently they follow behind you, Louise keeping a good grip on your hand as she walks. You can hear her dragging that gigantic slab of metal behind her across the floorboards.

That's when you feel something very strong, pulling on your tail. You turn to look at the strange force that is yanking on your bottom half.

Odey's hand, which has twisted around the end of your tail, is clinging on for dear life. She's yelling something, but it's indistinguishable from the noise and chaos erupting all around you.
You follow the arm that she's using to cling to your body. Your eyes trace all the way up her forearm and shoulder, up to her body. That's when you realize that it's clearly being restrained by someone taller than her. One of the guards had appeared from the crowd and has clung onto her other arm, and around her neck.

"ODELLE!" Louise yells, bringing her massive axe up to the ready! The guard instinctively uses her like a shield.

You keep it cool, because you have an idea on how to solve this.
Quickly reaching into your pouch, you take out a syringe you prepared earlier with a good amount of Green potion inside of it. With a mighty tug, you yank Odey closer to you as the guard continues to fight your much more powerful body strength.

With a swift movement, you jab the syringe right into his neck.
He gurgles, his eyes track off into the distance, and then his pupils dilate.

"Now, Let go."
He obediently releases Odey from his hands. She leaps forward and grabs you, sobbing uncontrollably into your chest.

"Now, Cup your hands."
You take the red vial out, splashing some of it on him. Then you pour some into his outstretched palms.

"Now, Take this to that guard by the door. Don't spill a single drop. I want you to splash it in his eyes, understood?"
He gurgles.
"Good."

He about faces and lurches toward the door. You take Louise and the sobbing Odey over behind the bar.
You look back at the last minute just in time to see your guard throw the red liquid in the doorman's eyes. The doorman slaps the guard, bringing him back to his senses.

Just in time for the red liquid to take effect. Their faces turn beet red as they start to argue about that slap. First it's with swears, then slurs, and finally fists.
Soon, the former comrades are now embroiled in a full-on skirmish. They throw windmill punches, kicks, chairs, bottles, anything within arms reach at each other and anyone around them.

You keep petting the blonde haired knight in your arms. Louise hugs you around your waist, saying something that is drowned out by the chaos.

>Stay here for a while, watch how the battle is going.
>Something really weird is going on outside, sorry girls, but you need to check it out.

Something really weird is going on outside. There appears to be a barrier of people standing a ways outside of the door. Was the doorguard there to cover that up? Or make the heroes unaware that this bar is slowly being closed in on?

What's more concerning, what was their plan with Odelle? Besides potentially the obvious, you don't think it was a random act. You think they intentionally targeted her.
You notice that everyone who was with you is still fighting guards.

Are they surrounding the building?
"Sorry girls." You pat the blonde knight's head one last time, rubbing her ears a bit as you go. "There's something bothering me that I have to go check out."

You pat Louise's head. She looks up at you.
"You need to protect Odelle while I'm gone. Just swing your axe at anyone trying to get back here who you don't know."

She smiles and nods, grabbing her massive slab of metal.

You slide from behind the counter, giant claws at the ready just in case someone tries the same thing again. Quickly, you slither over toward the window.
"Ergh!" You grunt.
Splinter. That's what you get for going too quickly across wooden flooring.

--

One advantage to not having legs is that you can flop your whole body straight out of the window.
Sure enough, near the entrance of the building is a small line of soldiers forming a blockade. They haven't quite noticed the window yet, so you're still set.

Making your way across the dirt, you wrap around a tree and lift yourself to a higher vantage point. You can see the lines they're trying to form. You only count about a dozen soldiers.

What's more troubling, is that they already appear to have a group of hostages. They're keeping them tied-up in a circle.

>Time to take them out, one at a time. Not a problem.
>Go back in, get a hero to come out and assist.
>I got lots of red potion for everybody!

First thing you're going to need is a weapon. The claws are fine and all, but if you're going to try taking each one of these guys out, you will need something that you're little talented with.

You reach into your pouch and take a length of thread, snapping a part off with your claws.

Reaching back into your pouch, you take out a vial with a purple hue to it. You let the thread dangle inside of the bottle as the soft cotton of the string absorbs the ichor.
Saying a few words under your breath, you feel some of your energy flow through the extremely caustic liquid and into the string. Faintly, the length of microscopic fabric is glowing.

That length of thread is now sharper than any sword, and tougher than any armor. You let it entwine with your claws as a patrol walks beneath you.

He's extremely confused right now. He just noticed that the window is open, and there's some kind of strange S pattern where footprints should be.

Slowly his eyes start to trace the S shaped print. His head pans upward, just in time for a thin twine to wrap around his neck and yank him into the tree!
He poofs into a fluffy animal ball. You stick him in the crook of the tree.

Gently you let yourself slide into the branch of an opposing tree. You a thread that's much longer than the last. Lowering it over a guard's head, you take the blue potion and let it drip down the length of fiber.

"Psst." You whisper. The guard looks up.
Your eyes meet just as a tiny bead of blue liquid reaches the end of the thread. It drops down, and hits its mark perfectly inside of his mouth. The strand reaches downward, entangling him just as he poofs into an animal ball.

>This is fun and all, but I think I should get on the ground and pick up the pace.

Something is wrong with the crowd of guards.
At least, something is wrong that not even the guards have noticed yet.

They move closer and closer in on the doorway. Meanwhile, there seems to be a straggler staying back. He seems to be sticking close to the couple guards guarding the hostages. He's wearing a hood, unlike the other guards.

Speaking of which, you think you recognize a few of the hostages that they've pulled out. Every single one of them are people you saw working in Gallete castle!

Also the sound inside almost vaguely sounds like Louise is starting to swing her axe around. Things are breaking, wood is shattering, people are screaming.
What is going on?!

There's the head maid, there's the archmage, there's the princess' cook. Several other maids, a couple knights that you saw.
All of them, they're targeting people who worked in Gallete's castle.

Why? What purpose does that serve? This is really confusing, you originally thought this was an attack on your party. Now you're thinking that this is more of an attack on Gallete itself.

Speaking of which, that stray guy is approaching the mass of hostages. He seems to be going back and forth between each one. Much to the chagrin of the two guards who are actually supposed to be questioning them.

Another guard leaves the bar, this time he's dragging a green-haired girl who is struggling against his grasp.

It's that knight, that was fawning over Jack.
Felly? Francis? Oh you're bad at names. She is putting up quite a struggle, even the guard has to call someone to help carry her.

Louise and her axe still seems to be happily chopping away inside, so at least she's okay. Which means Odey must be fine.
But now you have to find a way to free everyone. If only you had some kind of help here on the outside.

Suddenly, one of the guards pushes that stray guy. The guard yells something as he draws his sword.
Instantly, as if immediately cut down by a lightning bolt, that guard's sword explodes. Along with the rest of his body.

The mystery man takes off his hood, and to your surprise. He has chocolate brown hair, with two little cat ears on top.
That guy was a Gallete knight! You know this guy, he was the guy that stopped Jack from crossing the bridge that one time. You think he's also Odey's brother!

You figure this is as good of a time as any. Quickly, you throw the remainder of your red potion all over the guards who have gathered outside of the doorway. Ten are soaked, but several others are either immune, or weren't splashed as badly.
That's always a danger, you never know who does or doesn't have a little natural immunity to your poisons.

The three who weren't splashed break away and run toward that Gallete knight. The seven who WERE start to violently argue. Each one pushing at the other until a massive brawl breaks out. One of the captains immediately notices the madness and tries to break it up, but is immediately knocked out cold by his own men.

The knight now has five people on him. You decide this is as good of a time as any to go lend a helping hand. Flopping down onto the ground, you move toward one of the guards who is holding back.
He's casting a spell, a green aura glows on his hand as he takes aim at the wayward knight.

That's when your thread wraps around his neck, cutting off his incantation. He flops backwards onto the ground as your claws quickly make fluff out of him. The knight glances at you for only a moment as he continues his skirmish with the last four guards.

He uses an impressive array of weapons. He parries one with his dagger and slashes with his sword. One of the guards tries a leaping attack on him, but is met with a fan of knives which riddle his pelt with iron. Both of them poof into balls just as the remaining two rush at him.

Or remaining one. You manage to trip one with your tail. He stands up and tries to stab at you with a hidden knife, but your thread wraps around his blade and shatters it. His face is scratched to fluff from your razor sharp claws.

The knight gets to freeing the hostages, just as you turn around to notice that the brawl is starting to come to a close. The effects are wearing off the ones who haven't been reduced to animal balls yet. So the only ones remaining are tired, and still extremely irritated.

The fighting still seems to be going on inside. Which prompts a definite question.

"Why is it taking this long for four heroes to beat a room full of guards?"
Either you are missing something important, or they have found a way to grow guards out of thin air.

Every person Madeleine uses that specific type of poison on has a chance to save from being naturally immune. I forgot to roll for the green and red stuff, but that's okay. The chance to be immune occurs in the 90th percentile.
