You set off that afternoon, the sun on your left. Your gear is stowed below the seats of the boat, bound against the floor securely. You work the forward oar, and Cain the aft, as Emma sits between you, grumping. The village has turned out to see you off, waving and calling well-wishes and blessings. Surrounding the boat are a few merfolk, lead by Vsszah.

"We meet big island. We go secret ways. Calm seas. Smooth travel until Torrent. Kin will meet at island. Help fight."

You nod your thanks, and the merfolk slip between the surface, vanishing as if they'd never been. You put your oars to water, and slip away from the dock. With strong, smooth strokes, soon you've left the island behind you. In the distance, you see smaller coastlines, some seeming barely a day away, but you head directly toward open water. A plume of smoke, barely seen against the gathering clouds in the northern sky, is your only indication that anything at all lies in that direction.

"It will be a couple days until we reach the torrent, then another once we're past it. There are a few smaller islands where we can camp between here and there." Cain says, looking toward the front of the boat.

You nod, but don't speak. Your thoughts are still preoccupied by the discussion in the bath house. You blush furiously, and redouble your efforts at propelling the boat. Emma sighs and shakes her head, and an awkward silence falls over the three of you, and remains like a haze until sundown. The three of you pilot your vessel onto the bank and drag it up onto the sand, mooring it down and breaking out your gear. Soon enough, a fire is burning and bedrolls laid out.

Cain returns to the boat, unstrapping his spear from the floor of the vessel, and turning toward the heart of the small island. "Wait here. I'll be back with dinner."

>Oh, no. I'm perfectly capable of hunting for us.
>Okay. Be careful.

You shake your head and hold up a paw. "No, that's fine... you stay here and watch the cammp. Emma and I can hunt just fine."

He shakes his head, planting the butt of his spear in the dirt. "I won't hear of it. I'm a hunter, and a guy, and-"

"That has what to do with it?" Emma narrows her eyes and steps over to stand at your side, looking between you and Cain. "Pfft, please. I bet Nadia could beat you with one hand behind her back."

"Emma, I-"

"You know it's true! C'mon, you're not going to let him pull that crap, are you? C'mon, you know you're stronger than him!"

"It's not about whose stronger!" Cain insists, looking on the defensive. "It's just that where I'm from, the men provide for their wo-"

"What do you mean 'their women?'" Emma snaps, her tails thrashing angrily. "What do you think we are, pets or something?"

You frown at the girl parroting your words, but you kind of agree. You look at Cain, and he seems to shrink under your eyes.

"I don't mean to say you're not capable! I just wanted to help..."

"Then how about this?" You hold up a hand, palm forward. "Let's have a contest. Whoever brings back the most food wins. That should prove whose the more capable hunter, hm?"

Cain considers a moment, then nods. "All right. Just don't feel too bad-"

But you don't listen. You and Emma have already started running inland, on the hunt. You smell the salt of the seawater in the air, hear the hooting and howling of indigenous life, and... oh, something smells musty. You rush along the flat, marshy ground until it eventually gives way to tall grass. You come to a stop, Emma catching up to you a few minutes later, huffing and panting heavily. You give her a sheepish, apologetic smile, and nod toward the grass. Whatever that smell is, it's heavier now, and close.

And something about it smells absolutely delectable.
>>
>>40907275
You creep through the grass, Emma close behind, and in a clearing ahead you... well, you're not quite sure what you're seeing.

It's a massively fat beast that looks like an oversized badger with a long, broad bill, edged with long fangs all the way from front to back and spaced very close together. Four long claws end each arm, and black, webbed feet terminate its legs. A wide, flat, furry tail stretches out behind it, flat to the ground. It opens its maw as if it were yawning, and ferociously bites down on the top of a clump of the tall grass, pulling it's head back and using the "fangs" to strip the grain-like seeds from the top.

"Holy crap!" Emma hisses quietly. "That thing would feed us for a week!"

You can't help but lick your lips. It looks like it would be amazingly delicious. It doesn't seem to have noticed you.

The creature, whatever it is, seems blissfully aware of its impending doom. You can't help but feel it's a little unfair, but that's just how it goes sometimes. The rules of nature are often unkind. You need to eat, and this thing seems to have lived very well for all its years. You look at Emma, and she nods. You nod in response and slip from the grass silently, walking on the ball of your paws. You creep up behind the creature, and seated it sits taller than you. You're not sure how to take care of this without a prolonged fight, and the sun's already all but set. You see the creature clearly in the twilight, but that's not the problem. You don't know what else is out here.

Better, then, to finish it in a single go.

That's when something Emma said to you comes back, and you smile. You crouch, wagging, and leap, wrapping your arms around the beast's neck. It gives a loud, croaking cry, it's massive tail thrashing loudly against the ground as it rolls to it's side, trying to rise. You apply more pressure, and it resorts to simply thrashing about on the ground. You keep tightening your grip until it grows still. You squeeze harder.

You feel something snap. It thrashes and grows limp.

You grin and rise from the beast's twitching corpse, giving a victory howl, long and thin. Emma steps out of the clearing, wide-eyed and smiling. "Nadia, that was amazing! You... you took something that big down so quick!"

You bound over to her, wagging and smiling. You sweep her up into a hug, laughing happily. "C'mon, let's get this back before Cain does."

>>40908019
"I still don't know how you managed it... but you did good. I'm sorry I doubted you." Cain takes a step back, bending at the waist with his fists planted at his hips. "You're the better hunter."

"And don't you forget it!" Emma grins, triumphantly.

You shake your head, the turtle-hares Cain had caught hanging from a set of hooked ropes from a tree branch nearby. There is plenty of food, but you clearly won the contest.

"We're both good. Look at what you caught!" You gesture to the turtle hares, and Emma shakes her head, clucking her tongue. You frown at her. "Those would have easily fed us, both supper and breakfast. You're a good hunter, but so am I. We're both good! I got lucky to find a big kill... so don't be a jerk, okay?"

Cain nods solemnly, not looking up from his bow. "I'll be sure to remember this. I'm sorry I doubted you."

You nod, the matter settled so far as you're concerned. You open your mouth to speak, but a snarling nearby snaps your attention into overdrive. You turn, fists clenched, ready to strike.

Emma, looking sheepish, holds her stomach. "Sorry..."

Cain laughs kindly and reaches into his pack, pulling out a sharp machete. He sets about hacking apart your kill, preparing it for the cook fire.

You tousle Emma's hair and move to follow Cain, paying careful attention to what he's doing.

"Don't know how to butcher?"

You shake your head, leaning over and watching closely.

"Here, I'll show you. If you don't mind."

==========================================

You woke the following morning, and rowed... and slept, and rowed. Over the last two days, the central island had come into clearer view, the central mountain coming into clear focus, towering above the surface of the water. Smoke rises from the peak, but there's something a bit more troubling.

As you approached the island, a long stretch of gurgling, roaring water flowing among what looked like a field of jagged stones and boulders seemed to block your way. Islands on either side of the field that Cain identified as the "Growling Torrent" seem they would take another day at least to go around in either direction. Maybe as long to walk across, more carrying the boat.

"There it is... are you ready for this? It's not too late to turn aside. I've done this alone, but if you don't want to risk it..."

>No. The faster the better. Onward!

You nod toward the torrent, determination in your eyes. "Let's go. It's just a little water."

Cain grins and nods. Emma has her nails buried in the seat of the boat, her tails wrapped down below as if they had the strength to hold her in place.

"Start rowing and follow every direction I give you!" His oar slaps the water, yours following a moment later. You row with all your strength, sweat rising under your fur as the boat picks up speed, aiming straight for a gap between two tall, sharp rocks. "Lean left!"

A sudden change in the flow sweeps you to the right, straight toward the base of the spire, and you lean against the opposite direction. The boat pulls slightly up out of the water, and the bottom grazes the outcropping. Once you pass through, another torrent causes the prow to jerk to the left, and Cain calls out for you all to lean against the flow again. This time, your weight in opposition of the flow keeps the boat level in the water and the current sweeps you down past more long stones, boulders, and the ruined remains of boats here and there, as well as the occasional skeleton, picked clean and bleached white by the ravages of nature.

For the better part of three hours, you fight the current and dodge the rocks. Eventually, you come out the other side, panting heavily, but exhilarated. Emma is pale as a sheet, deep gashes in the wooden seat from her claws. Cain raises the oar above his head and gives a sharp whoop of triumph, and you can't help but howl as well, wagging vigorously. He laughs and smiles at you, laying the oar across his lap. "Well... that was the Growling Torrent. What did you think?"

>Terrifying! Let's never do that again!
>That was amazing! I don't think I've felt so alive in a long time!

"That was amazing!" You can't help but smile ear to ear, wagging so hard you rock the boat. "I haven't felt so alive in a long time! Let's go again! Can we on the way back? Huh? Huh!?"

"Please no..." Emma whines softly, looking at you with pleading eyes. Cain just chuckles and puts his oar in the water once more. "Come on. If we hurry, we can reach the city by nightfall."

You nod and follow suit, paddling quickly.

===================================

Cain moors the boat as you help Emma from her seat, the kitsune practically falling to her knees once she's on solid ground in thanks to be earthbound once more. You look about the dockside district, the shanties and shacks that make up the majority of the wharf district looking every bit as unwelcoming as you'd been promised. Rough-looking customers, tattooed islanders, and various monsters the like of which you don't recognize mill about here and there in the twilight, some staggering about smelling of cheap liquor and body odor, singing bawdy, off-key sea shanties, brawling in the street, or doing all manner of unsavory business. You whine softly, keeping a hand on Emma's shoulder.

"Well... welcome to Fireshade." Cain frowns, leaning his spear up against his shoulder. "A worse place you won't find."

"Let's get on our way quick, then... the less time we waste, the better." You put an arm around Emma, lifting the kitsune to her feet. She looks up at you, then to a particularly large orc with greyish skin and one broken tusk.

"Garush could take him."

You nod your agreement.

"We should find a place to stay for the night. At the very least, we should have daylight on our side for climbing the mountain. It could be a treacherous path."

You shake your head. "No. I can see in the dark, and Emma can make light. We've already delayed long enough. Any more time, and I don't know if Djanna will be all right. I... don't even know if she's okay now." You frown, tail drooping. "We've come this far, and I won't wait another minute. Come on. If you want to wait here-"

"No, no. If you're that determined, I'm coming too. I just hope you're not overexerting yourself." Cain steps to your side, scanning the streets before setting out ahead of you. You follow, and quickly fall into step beside him, Emma traipsing along close by. Several catcalls, lewd propositions, and other unsavory words are leveled at you, and while Cain seems to grow irritated, you remain blissfully ignorant of much of the innuendo. Soon enough, you've crossed through the city and come to the far gates. A few quick words from Cain to the guard, and you're issued through onto the stony ground of th island proper, the barest hints of a road leading toward the mountain.

The night seems to hang hard and low around you, even Emma's foxfire doing little to penetrate the dark. Still, it's enough to light your way for a few feet ahead, and once you reach the base of the mountain, you're met with a trio of merfolk, armed with spears that look formed of strange minerals in bright pinks and whites, studded with shells. They hold up their hands, palms toward you, though attempting to speak to them yields only burbling croaks.

As you take your first steps up the path leading to the summit, you stop short. It's hard to make out, but you see a figure looming in the shadows a ways up the path, half-hidden in a rock outcropping. You can't help but growl softly. Cain readies his spear, and the merfolk follow suit.

"Who's there!?" You shout out, taking a step ahead of the party, clenching your fists and assuming a fighting stance. Emma slips up to your right, and Cain to your left, unsure it seems of what you're seeing, but ready to fight all the same. The merfolk remain behind, rather indifferent to the threat or unaware of it you don't know.

A moment passes before a familiar figure steps out from behind a rock outcropping, his swarthy appearance unkempt, bags under his eyes. He puts his hands on his hips and surveys your little band with what appears to be disdain, before he bows deeply at the waist.

Cain scowls, tightening his grip on his spear. "What do you want..."

"I know I've been a terrible example of a man, and a disreputable hunter, a shameful blight upon the honor of our people. I want a chance to redeem myself. I've come to ask that you let me join you in this hunt." He reaches up to his neck, gripping the bands of shells and fangs that adorn him. With a sharp yank, the leather bands snap, and he drops the trophies callously to the ground, treading on them with a bare heel. "I will earn my glory, and my status as a hunter - and a man - over again, and take my honor as a respectable man of the tribe."

You're not certain how to react to this. Emma seems nonplussed. Cain seems unsure of what to think, but he's lowered his weapon at least. The merfolk seem bored by the exchange, simply waiting in the rear, burbling amongst themselves.

Kiva looks to you, still sporting a huge purplish bruise, his nose flattened against his face. "Nadia. You taught me a valuable lesson in humility. For that, I thank you."

IN THE IMMINENT FUTURE!

The dragons breath forced you to take shelter, or face an untimely demise. As you hid, pressed against the rock for dear life, you saw Cain holding on for dear life to the side of the cliff above. You noticed Kiva approach him, as cain shouted at him for help. Kiva stared at cain for a moment, before lunging forward, whispering something into his ear, and shoving him loose, into the dragons path.
>>
>>40918234
"If you think for one second that we're going to trust you, you're crazier than I thought you were!" Cain growls, tightening his grip on his spear.

"Sure. But one slip-up, and I'll beat you up again." You cross your arms over your chest, glaring at him. Emma looks up at you like you've lost your mind, as does Cain.

Kiva glares and opens his mouth to speak before he snaps it shut and takes a few quick, shallow breaths. "As you say... I... will do all I can to keep myself in check. Thank you, huntress." He puts his fists on his hips and bows from the waist. Cain looks as though he's seen something that shouldn't be.

You walk up to him, tail straight out behind you, and offer your hand. He regards it curiously, suspiciously, before you reach out and grab his and give it a firm shake. He seems as if he doesn't understand, but returns the gesture anyway. You nod as if that settles things between you, and move past him along the pathway. Cain follows you quickly, casting Kiva a distrusting look. Emma follows him, giving the older male the universal signal for "I'm watching you" before returning to your side. Kiva falls into step between you and the merfolk, once more trampling his trophies in the rocky dust.

You climb in near silence for an hour, motes of foxfire dancing about between the seven of you, and the closer you get to the summit, the hotter it gets. You smell sulfur and lava, and it smells like home. For a moment, your memories come to the forefront of your mind. A small kobold boy slipping a small kobold girl a piece of his snow sugar, of a father's strong arms embracing his daughter, and a mother's loving discipline for a daughter gone wild. You feel a small hand slip into yours and give it a squeeze, and you look down at Emma. She looks up at you with a concerned frown before reaching up with her free hand, brushing tears from your eyes.

"We're here..." Cain whispers, gesturing ahead. You stand before a yawning cave, lit from within by fires that issue forth from cracks in the ground. The heat is all but unbearable, or would be for one who lacked the blessings of the sun god. Cain frowns and strips off his shirt, Kiva following suit before drawing a long machete from a sheathe in the small of his back.

"I will restore my honor here. I will take my first trophy again, and become worthy of my place. Bear witness, Cain."

The younger man doesn't speak, but takes up his spear again, tightening his grip. Emma looks like she's about to wilt in the heat, but the determination in her eyes tells you that she'll follow you wherever you go. The merfolk look at the flaming cave like they've made a horrible miscalculation in following you.

"Cain, lead on..." You motion him forward, the hissing of the gas feeding the flames sounding like conspiratorial whispers. He nods and steps forward, hesitating at the mouth of the cavern. He surveys the way ahead closely before taking his first careful steps in, weaving a path amongst the flames. He stops every few steps to smash the butt of his spear into the ground. Most often, nothing happens, but occasionally the ground gives way to another crack, gas escaping and all but instantly resulting in another plume of flame gushing from the rock. He beckons the group forward every dozen or so feet, wending a slow path through the cavern.

He pauses to once again slam his spear into the ground, and the echoing of the wood on the stone draws a loud hiss from deeper on, high-pitched and menacing. Cain shivers, tightening his grip on his weapon, but Kiva just grins. He steps forward, machete held almost lazily in his hand. The light and the sweat on his sun-bronzed, scarred skin casts a golden sheen on him, his black hair and beard damp with sweat, and his eyes shining with a predatory light from the flames.

"That... that's like no creature I've heard before..."

"It's huge. Don't underestimate it..." you whisper softly, but something sounds off about the sound. The dragon you'd heard was deafening, everything about it larger than life. This sounds smaller, somehow. Maybe a young one? But that would mean it was like Djanna, wouldn't it? Or were there two kinds of dragons?
>>
>>40923514
"Large or small, there are seven of us. Well, four. Glory enough for all." Kiva moved past Cain, stepping through the flames toward the back of the cavern. He seems almost in a trance as his body begins to shift and expand, black fur sprouting over every inch of his body as his muzzle expands, his eyes darkening to a yellow filled with malice, He snarls, exposing long fangs, a tail tearing forth from his body below his leg wrap. "Come... on..." He rushes ahead, into the shadows at the back of the cavern.

"Kiva, wait!" Cain calls after him, looking back at you at a loss.

You scowl, growling softly as your tail thrashes in annoyance. You look down at Emma, then back to your merfolk accompaniment. They seem diminished in the heat of the cavern, but there is determination in their eyes yet. It seems that even if they are unsure of their mission, their devotion to Vsszah is absolute.

"Emma, cover us with illusions. Cain, be ready to take out the dragon if you can get a clear shot, and keep him off Djanna. She's not a dragon, like, a monster dragon. She's like us, all right?" He nods quickly, and you turn to the merfolk, motioning them forward. You gesture Emma close to you and you bend, laying your hand on the kitsune's shoulder.

"I have an idea... can you make it so that it looks like we're not standing where we're standing? Like... we're here... but, like... it looks like we're there?" You point back to the mouth of the cave. She nods and turns, looking at the merfolk. They seem apprehensive, but the kitsune smiles sweetly, and they seem disarmed. She whispers arcane words, weaving her fingers, and soon enough the merfolk, you, herself, and Kain begin to shimmer, copies that look exactly the same appearing five feet away from their respective sources. She slumps and you catch her with a surprised cry.

"I... think that's the best I'm going to be able to do this time around. Keeping this up is going to take a lot out of me. I'll be fine, just please, for the love of Yra, be careful?" She gives you a sweet smile. You nod and help her to her feet. You nod to the merfolk and motion for them to follow you. They nod in agreement, and as you turn to start moving around the flames, you hear a lupine roar, and a high-pitched draconic shriek, along with a bright blue flash, and the odor of ozone over the gaseous stink of sulphur.

Your heart all but stops. "Djanna!"
>>
>>40924048
You and Emma start moving immediately, Cain calling after you, but rushing ahead just as quickly. You don't hear him curse, or Emma Cry out as the flames burn her legs as she dashes after you heedless of the danger. You reach the mouth of a massive cave, lit by gas flares ripping out of the walls. Overhead, you see the moon hanging low and fat in the sky, the rest of the celestial bodies obscured by the light. Down below, in the caldera, lies a massive pile of gilt, broken chests spilling their treasures out onto the rocky ground. Piles of scorched books lay discarded in piles here and there around the outside of the den, as well as weapons of various makes and condition.

A long, serpentine form with dark blue scales - bordering on black - with a long maw and whiskers hangs low against the ground, its claws red with blood. A long red tongue snakes between its jaws, as well as small jets of bright blue flame. Kiva sits in a crouch across from it, grinning madly. Gore leaks from his back, from three long gashes, and from deep puncture wounds on his shoulder.

He seems lost in a berserker frenzy, moving like an animal as he and the dragon size one-another up.

Nah that would informed the dragon of how many we had, no tactics, and lost time trying to locate Djanna while we become the embodiment of puppy dog eyes. Also gives dragon a chance to use his words
>>
>>40924067
"WAIT!" You rush ahead, scrambling along the uneven ground. The dragon turns at your cry, hissing, but its expression - if you can call it that - changes in a heartbeat. Before you hit the bottom of the path, you're surrounded on all sides by scaled, serpentine coils. They wrap you close, almost uncomfortably tightly, and the empty white eyes stare deeply into yours. The beast hisses softly, then lightly butts its head against yours, giving a strange, chiming sort of sound. It sounds like... laughter? It reminds you Of Sylea's singing.

And then you feel its coils tighten as it hisses and shrieks, rearing back. You smell blood as it looks back over it's shoulders, eyes blazing as Kiva stands over it with a bloody machete held over his head, poised for a second strike. He gives a menacing howl as crimson drips from the dragon's shoulder, its arm cleaved nearly through by the force of the blow.

You shout loudly, incapable of forming words in your fear, in your denial of what you see coming. He brings the blade down, cleaving once more into the dragon, and it releases you, jerking itself around and wrenching the blade out of the werewolf's hands, its tail slamming into him and knocking him ass-over-elbows down into the depths of the horde, flat on his back. Cain dashes forward, coming to a stop somewhere between Kiva and the dragon, raising his spear.

A small, white-clothed bundle of black fur and pointy ears slams into the small of Cain's back, knocking him flat on his face. "No! Leave her alone, damn it!"

The merfolk filter into the cavern, looking at a loss as to who to attack as they take up positions seemingly at random around the cave. The dragon is holding its feet, but only barely, seething through the pain and the loss of blood as it looks in confusion between the invaders in its cave.

"Emma! Potion!" You rise and dash to the dragon's side, laying your hands on her and falling to your knees. "C'mon, it's okay. Look at me, c'mon..."

Emma, who had been perched on Cain's back, trying to keep him pinned, leapt up at your command and rushed to where you'd dropped your pack, rooting through it and grabbing out the last of the bottles of life from the padded box, turning to dash back toward the center of the cave. Where the hell... no time!

The dragon blinks lazily, trying to keep upright. Seconds later, its legs give out under it, and it gives a weak, hissing whisper. It doesn't sound like language, but it doesn't need to. You can feel its pain, its fear, its rage at the invaders in its nest. It lays its head in your lap, the size of it dwarfing your legs as you stroke its eye ridges lightly. You cup its cheeks gently in your hands, closing your eyes and focusing on the heat of the flames, the light illuminating the cave.

You feel your marks start to glow, your claws blaze. You feel not the calming presence of a healer, but something else.

Kiva. He attacked the dragon. He could have hurt you. He could have killed you! You smell the blood in the air, feel the heat of the flames. Smell the stench of sweat, of monsters and men. Your rage burns in your heart like the core of the sun. Your hands tremble and the dragon shrieks in pain as you feel its bones crack. You rise, turning toward Kiva. The one who wielded the weapon against you. Who would do you harm.

You snarl. Your heart pounds. You howl, the force of it nothing you'd ever let loose before, causing man and monster alike to cover their ears. Not Kiva, though. He looks to you with a perverse sort of glee, lost in a frenzy of his own.

"DESTROY THOSE WHO OPPOSE YOU. BRING ME GLORY."

Emma uncorks the potion, upending it into empty air. The stream vanishes,, and you hear the dragon give a purring whimper.

There is no dragon. There are no merfolk. There is no kitsune, looking at you and calling your name in fear. There is only you, and the black-furred werecreature standing before you. He throws down his machete and roars a challenge, spittle and blood flying from his mouth. You roar in return, answering, and you leap at him, flame wreathing your claws, your white hair blazing with fire and light. Your eyes blaze as you and Kiva meet, dark and light, fury met with fury as your fist slams into his wounded shoulder, eliciting a snarl from him as his own claws rake your stomach, tearing open your shirt but not not penetrating your flesh.

You slam your forehead into his muzzle, and he snarls, returning the favor. You feel your nose crack, and just as quickly heal. You snap at him and on instinct, he pulls his face away from yours. You use his recoil against him, pressing your leg between his and hooking your ankle behind his and slamming your elbow into his throat. He gags and goes over backward, clutching at his throat. You leap atop him, raking at his face with your claws. His flesh sizzles as you tear at him, snarling and snapping. He snarls, howls, and then begins whimpering and trying to throw you off as you butcher him. You cease clawing, setting for simply driving your fist over and over again into him. Finally, with a final punch, you feel something crack, and he falls terribly still. You throw back your head in a victory howl.

"Nadia... what have you done..." Emma's voice is small and timid. You turn to look at the small creature, backing slowly away from from, terror in her eyes. Her tails drag the ground, her ears flat against her head.

You advance on the kitsune, murder in your heart. You lick your lips slowly, clenching and unclenching your fists. She's so small... barely a morsel... but she looks small, easy enough to eat. Somewhere in the depths of your mind, you hear a voice screaming at you to stop, to leave Emma alone, but you don't know who this "Emma" is and you don't really much care either. You start running, and lunge at the girl. She screams and falls to her knees, cowering.

That's when something slams into you with the force of a charging ox, wrapping around you tightly and pinning your arms to the side of your body. You roar in fury, flexing hard against your bonds. The dragon hisses loudly, constricting around you tighter until you feel your muscles compact, your bones creak in objection to their confinement. You strain against the dragon's coils, snarling and thrashing your head about.

"Nnnnnnnadia...." The beast lilts, its face held close to yours, the empty white eyes meeting yours. You snap at it in feral fury, trying to take a bite out of it, but it doesn't recover. The beast chirps softly, and it starts to sing lightly. The song is strange and haunting, and you're not sure why, but it reminds you of... something. You don't know what. Something you can't recall. When you try, there is only the blazing hatred of the sun, banishing the dark and the shadows, the corpses of your enemies littering the battlefield. You flex your claws, jerking anew against the dragon's flagging strength. Blood still spills from its shoulder and back, but still it continues to sing.

"We... we have to get out of here. Emma, come on..." Cain rises, grabbing hold of the girl's shoulder. She screams and swipes at him with her nails before returning to the fetal position, trembling and covering her head with her arms, her tails curled protectively over her. Cain looks at an absolute loss as to what to do.

Guess those are some pretty big penalties to break out of berserkergang.
As they should be.
All of the stories of berserkers I can remember have them murdering their families in fits of rage.
>>
>>40925344
All right, roll 'em.

The song is negating a lot of the penalties for your berserk.
>>
>>40925387
This is what happens when people don't bother thinking about the consequences. They probably assumed we'd berserk long enough to just kill Kiva and then go back to normal.

Well, they live, but you traumatized the kitty.

>Let this be a lesson to you
If anons were stupid enough to vote to go berserk in the presence of allies and family, do you really think that they'd learn their lesson?

And then you've got the players that want "interesting" to happen. They'll just do the same thing again in the future.
>>
>>40925526
And this is why I say that Lotus isn't completly at fault.
>>
>>40925554
>isn't completly
Lotus isn't at fault at all. He's just running his quest how he wants to.
>>
>>40925526
We got lucky anon. Thats all there is to it. If we had failed here we could have lost everything for petty vengance of a slight. Kiva wasnt a foe. Not like the hunters are. Yet Nadia killed him in cold blood. We've attacked our sisters, Emma is traumatized, and Djanna is wounded. Nothing good came from this.

Except the writing. That was gold, keep up the good work Lotus.
>>
So, what I wanna know is what happened to Djanna that turned her into an actual dragon. Wasn't aware she could do that.
>>
>>40925344
Wait, no... you do know that song.

You remember... a small egg, veined with crimson, like a large ruby, and an older auntie singing. That's the song!

It all comes flooding back to you in a heartbeat. Home. Sylea's singing. Time spent at your mother's feet, and on your father's knee. Your uncles and cousins laughing and cursing you. Home and family. The flames around you die out, the heat and light from your hair fading. Your muscles go slack, and the dragon releases you to a heap on the ground. Your breath comes in short, shallow gulps as your chest trembles, tears blurring your vision. You look down at your hands on the stone, Kiva's blood staining your fur, his flesh under your claws. You feel your stomach churn, and you vomit your lunch onto the ground.

You killed him. He was a jerk, but you killed him. You'd never... even Bertrand, even Ox and Weasel. You were angry at them, but you didn't want them dead! You rise to your knees, panting, looking at the brands on your palms in fear and shock. The dragon lies beside you, breathing deeply, its eyes half-lidded as you see its flesh beginning to knit slowly. You hear footsteps approaching you, and look up to see Cain standing over you. He crouches down, using his spear to steady himself.

"Nadia... what happened?"

You don't know how to respond. You rise shakily to your feet, your shirt hanging open around you, a tattered rag ruined by Kiva's claws. Cain looks up at you in silence, waiting for you to speak, not pressing the matter. He looks over at the dragon, then over at Emma, then back up at you.

You swallow deeply, the foul odor of blood and sick teasing your nose, threatening to steal what little remains of your strength. In the distance, you think you hear the winds picking up.

>Go to Emma. You have to apologize, make this right somehow.
>Examine the dragon. It doesn't look like it's in a condition to fight.

>>
>>40925788
I wouldn't call it misleading, exactly, but Yra did say to kill those who oppose us, then had us almost murder our family in berserker rage even though the one guy that was doing so had died.

So I mean.

If you want to rules lawyer a god.
>>
>>40925843
Yeah, but YRA didnt specify what conditions opposing us were. Kiva, opposed us in wanting harm Djanna. Emma, opposed our killing of Kiva and where our mindset was. Djanna, opposed us attacking Emma. Even passive opposition is opposition.

Yra is a god. One of absolutes. We need to treat future uses of his power with caution.
>>
>>40925919
Honestly all the gods seem like jerks at this juncture. They seem to want everyone and everything to be no more than their puppets.
>>
>>40926013
What? Do you think they'd let everyone revel in there power without strings?
>>
>>40926013
The gods revel in their power and have little regard for the fates of mortals? WHAT A SURPRISE!
>>
>>40926030
Point is they don't want us to have or use our free will. They don't want depth or nuance. All they want is a caricature that they'll discard at their leisure. Following them seems stupid.

>>40926054
Yeah they're basically Greek deities without the power to be active in our world. Meaning no real teeth. Why are we helping them again?
>>
>>40925718
You pace away from Cain, wringing your hands in front of you, heedless of the heat and the stench and the press of the cave. You've never felt claustrophobic before, but with everything working on your mind, you wish you could be out and running. Just you, and the night air, and the cold, and the snow. You miss the snow, and the trees, and why is Kiva just laying there? Why doesn't he get up? Did you hit him that hard? You...

No, Nadia, come on. Get it together. You... you can't lose focus. Not now. You take a deep breath, but it catches in your throat, and you cough desperately, falling to your knees. You look again at the brands on your hands, wide-eyed. They're covered in gore.

Cain gently lays his hand on your shoulder. "Nadia, come on. Calm down... it's all right. He attacked you, and you defended yourself. I saw it. There's nothing wrong w-"

"That's not it..." you whisper softly, turning to look up at him with a lost look in your eyes. "Yra... he told me... he would have made me attack everyone. Try and... and kill..." You can't help it any longer. You break down in tears, pressing the palms of your hands into your eyes. Cain tilts his head, reaching out and laying a hand on your shoulder. You grip his hand, turning and pressing your face into his stomach, taking what comfort you can.

He gently embraces you, holding the back of your head until your tears run dry. You pull back and look up at him, and he down at you. He opens his mouth to speak, but you shake your head, rising unsteadily to your feet.
>>
>>40926089
>Why are we helping them again?
We told crazy mom that they gave us a task and then felt obliged to do it
>>
>>40926092
"Emma... gotta check on Emma..." He nods and offers you his shoulder. You shake your head, motioning him to wait, and make your way over to the small fox girl. Her illusion long since ended, she lays on the floor of the cavern beside the dragon, eyes wide, nearly catatonic. You reach out for her slowly, whispering her name.

She recoils from you as if you were on fire, looking at you without seeing as she holds her tails tightly against her chest, keeping them between herself and you.

>Try and calm her down.
>Apologize. Apologize forever.

But I'm not, I just find the way you spew bile and groaning whenever the slightest thing goes wrong terribly amusing.

"Aaah! We must use our blessings more wisely!"
More wisely than trying to heal a dragon we're trying to save (and have reason to believe is our sister)? If we're gonna be scared of a critfail every time we'll never do anything.

"B-but why did you vote to go beserk!"
Felt appropriate. Nadia is impulsive at the best of times. Having a deity channelling their wrath through her and commanding her to kill? Time to go with the flow.

And now Nadia has learnt that Yra definitely doesn't have her interests in mind. It's a pretty valuable experience and she managed to have it without even (physically) hurting her friends.
