Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you got a tattoo and returned to El-Amin.

It is currently the 14th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

You decide to follow the urge wherever it may lead you. After all, what's the worst that could happen? Horrible dismemberment? Your own death? Pah! You proceed forward, across a narrow bridge which stretches across a steep drop into the black. From there you find yourself winding through a sequence of narrow caverns until you reach what appears to be a staircase carved into the side of a cliff.

You proceed down the stairs, they turn back on themselves a number of times but always proceed downwards. You're not sure how deep you wind up going, but it must be quite deep. The air here is old and stale, as if it hadn't been disturbed in a century before your arrival. There's no light aside from the light from the ball of fire you produced, and even it seems dimmed by the oppressive atmosphere.

You must appear as little more than a shifting mass of shadow occasionally cast in sharp contrast by the light of the flame as you make your way through the tunnels in accordance with the directions of the voice in your head. It is a voice, now. Telling you when to turn and when to continue on. You go deeper and deeper into the caves, walking for what must be a solid hour or so, in a generally western direction you think. Around that time the air starts to grow fresher and a light appears up ahead.

Then you appear in a large, lamplit cavern. Crates lie scattered about, the vast majority empty or in an advanced state of rot. Most likely both. Zahak is napping on a platform built around a central pillar which seems to hold up the cavern roof, and just beyond you can see the wide open expanse of the ocean. You imagine that no ship larger than a dingy could slip through the narrow opening in the rocks the cove is afforded, but you suppose that's what makes it good for smuggling.

>>
The newer supplies, presumably placed down here by your companions, lie further in. They're stacked up on a wooden platform secured to the stone walls. You make your way over, inspecting them. Two or three dozen crates, and a thirty barrels of water. Most of the crates are labeled 'food' but you spot a few labeled 'bedding' or 'clothing'.

You ignore them for now, instead reaching out to Zahak mentally. {Guess who's home!}

You get a vague sense of Mahana's grinning feline face before it's drowned out by the presence of Zahak's mind. He feels unexpectedly powerful, almost discouragingly so. He just seems to be dreaming though, you don't think you actually woke him. You see brief flashes of yourself, and then Zahak tearing into the flesh of a presumably wild camel.

Cupping your hands around your mouth you shout out into the vastnes of the cavern. “Zahak! Your father's home!”

That does it. He shoots awake, roaring instinctively. It's a proper roar too, reverberating through the walls of the cavern and shaking the platform you stand on. A powerful roar. As he draws himself up to his full height you see him for the first time at his full size. He easily outstrips a horse, or even the sarada you rode in on, in size. You wonder if you'll be able to fly along on his back soon? You must admit, you're looking forward to it.

When he spots you he takes to the air, bounding off the platform he's standing on and spreading his wings. There's an audible snap as the membranes are pulled taut and he soars gracefully across the space between you, landing on the platform with a crash and running up to greet you.

You find yourself tackled off your feet as he wraps his wings around you, pulling you against his body and rolling on his back as he falls to avoid crushing you beneath him. {Papa! I missed you! I thought maybe you weren't coming back because you said that it would only be a short trip but everyone kept saying you were fine but I wasn't sure if they were telling the truth but they were!}

Even if he's huge, he's still just a kid apparently. Certainly just as excitable as a kid. You wriggle in his grasp but can't seem to free yourself. In the end you grow consigned to your fate. {I'm sorry I was gone for so long, I got sidetracked a few times while I was in the North. I'm back now though, and I'll be staying for at least a little while. I hope things weren't too lonely without me.}

Zahak's neck scales flare out, rattling together loudly. You're not sure whether to interpret that as happy or annoyed or what. {I wasn't too lonely! Chrys played with me a lot and took me hunting and even though I've gotten too big for doors and they moved me here they still visited yesterday and I can fly whenever I want so it's okay!}

What kind of Dragon is Zahak exactly? From the images you've provided, he seems to be fluctuating between a Wyvern and the usual classic Dragon.
>>
>>40905071
>read the quest

But yeah, not a dragon.
>>
>>40905071
He is a Wyvern (2 legs plus wings), but in this setting nobody makes the distinction. He's just a dragon.
>>
>>40904704
Oi lads. Learning out the plasma trick Surya's got for us and Zahak might be easier than you think. Skull Kid comes from a world full of energy projecting weapons. He could probably help us out of developing a framework to develop our understanding and make the plasma blade thing easier. I still would like to focus on making a rail gun first, and getting more Metal mastery though.
>>
>>40905071
He's got wings and hind legs, but no forelegs. He walks on the tips of his wings like a bat. Thus, he would be categorized as a wyvern.
In setting, no distinction is made. "Dragon" is the term used to describe the entire Draconic family.

I also updated the companion pastebin, all of your companions. Not much has changed, a few people finished reading books so got a small vys boost. Zahak has matured into being officially a 'child' as opposed to a 'newborn'. His treasure horde expanded and he got a little better as a Vatis in a few areas.
>>
>>40905142

The rail gun ought to be more effective, it's literally just enchanting tubes and getting SK to build a loading and firing mechanism instead of developing an entirely new and lost technique. More effective too, since anyone of our mates can use it, and it's not fire, so even more effective against dragons.
>>

His Vys Reserves is as big as Mik's. How is that considered "a little"?
Also, he's excelling in some areas that we haven't even got to. we could use that to our advantage. Father/son bonding meditation time!
>>
>>40905289
That's a good idea, but we'll need a very specific trigger. If it's anything like master's pipe, a light tap will do it. There's usually quite of bit of hard bumps in combat, and that sounds like a lot of potential for disaster.

>>

Have it trigger when we feed it vys.
Or have a little trigger like on a regular gun, that activates the creation, and the actual shooting/acceleration works automatically.

Because mysterious insight that might give a super good semi-GM bonus, and we won't learn what the insight is for otherwise since people refuse to vote to meditate on finding it out, would literally take a couple hours at most with Mik just thinking about it.
>>
>>40905673
That doesn't mean we can't learn lightning/plasma first, though.
>>
>>40905721
Learning that would probably give insight, which means if we do more than 1 thing other than Gate insight, we wouldn't be able to get the Gate semi-GM bonus.
>>40905227
Soma, how does the semi-GM bonus work?
For example, let's say we did healing for the semi-GM bonus, but went full water manipulation for the actual GM meditation, would we have +4(not sure how much it was) to healing and +8 to water meditation?

learning lightning/plasma isn't a fire technique. It's a vys based thing. Something about gathering excess vys around your fingers until it starts to build up.
>>
>>40905794
No, anon, lightning is a fire technique, we know this.
>>
>>40905794
It has been stated in-quest that it's an application of fire magic.

>>
>>40905794
>>40905750
Pretty sure there's 2 methods to the lightning technique.

A. Masters method of gathering ambient vys until it builds up to overcharge

B. Fire GM method of just creating it from our reserves.

The Plasma sword technique is undoubtedly a fire technique though. I don't know whether it's Master or GM level though.

We get bonuses for specializing while on our way to GM. The Gates give us GM insights.

You scratch between two bony growths which have sprouted from Zahak's hide near the base of his horns, which he seems to quite enjoy judging by the way he pushes his head against your hand. {I'm sorry for leaving you for so long. I would've brought you with me but I worried you might get hurt. How about this, to make it up to you I'll bring you on my next adventure. How does that sound?}

His tail starts to lash around violently behind you, smashing into the wood hard enough to shake the entire platform. You worry he might damage the planks, and thus endanger the structural stability of the whole construction. Fortunately he seems to pick up on this and curb his enthusiasm, his tail falling gradually still as his voice pervades your thoughts. {I can't wait to show you what I've learned! I've been practicing really hard trying to do that water thing that you can do and I really think I'm starting to get the hang of it!}

He spreads his wings, freeing you from his embrace. Once you've got your feet on solid ground again he pushes himself into a standing position with his weight primarily resting on the 'elbow' of his wings. You wonder if it wouldn't be better to call it his wrist, or something? Considering the supporting structure of his wings are sort of like fingers. {Watch this, Papa!} Is all he says before stomping over to the edge of the wooden platform and leaping off.

There's a tremendous splash as Zahak presumably hits the water and you rush to the edge, worry consuming your thoughts. What if he hit the rocks? A broken neck could still kill a dragon, regardless of how sturdy they are. However, as you reach the edge of the platform and look down you find Zahak floating on his back in his water with his wings spread wide, air trapped beneath serving to sort of buoy him on the surface of the water. You honestly wouldn't have thought that a creature that large would be able to swim, but he seems quite adept at it.

You feel a burst of vys and a moment later the water around him rushes upwards, shooting towards the ceiling with immense force. You have to take a step back to avoid getting bowled over as it rushes past you like some sort of tremendous geyser. It's really quite impressive considering that only a few weeks ago he was struggling with even the most rudimentary of spells, but you get the sense he had to expend far more vys than necessary to accomplish this particular feat of magic.

Fire deals with photons, so unless Soma goes eastern-ish and takes Metal to mean electricity, both are Fire.
>>40905847
No they aren't, every time we have made/learned a pure elemental technique so far, it gave insight to the element.
And the semi-GM thing isn't, we know that if we get 3 insights of the same kind when we're Master in an element, it gives us a bonus before we get to GM.

The absolute maximum bonus you can earn from a GM trait is +8 total. So this can be divided up into +4 to one thing and +4 to another, +4 to one thing and +2 to two other things, +6 to one thing and +2 to another. Et cetera. The only thing that matters in relation to the GM trait you earn is the GM meditation. You can also get a trait that gives less than a total of +8, for instance +4 and +2 would only be a +6 total.

Anyway, as for the Semi-GM bonus it's not just for GM. For all levels of magic if you specialize your meditations you'll get a bonus at the 'halfway' point. For GM this means that after 3 meditations, if all three are part of a certain subcategory of that elemental magic (Illusion, healing, water/fire manipulation, so on and so forth), you'll be able to perform that specific subcategory at 'GM Levels', although you'll still be able to do it better once you actually GM.

For instance, once you achieved your Healing bonus after your third meditation towards GM, you could restore limbs. Where as previously you weren't able to do so without assistance.

>Meditate 3 times on healing magic.
>Learn how to heal like a GM without a GM trait.
>GM in such a way that the trait you get gives a bonus to healing.
>You're now better at healing since you actually GM'd.

Mechanically it'll be represented thus: After 3 meditations on the same subcategory of magic you'll get a +8 bonus to that particular subdivision of magic. The same bonus a GM would if they didn't have a trait that improved it.

Once you actually attain Grandmaster rank you'll get a bonus from whatever GM trait you got. In Mik's case, he got a +4. Thus his total bonus to healing is a +12 where as previously it would've been a +8. His bonus is still the exact same as the bonus any GM would get if they got a +4 to healing.

I still don't understand this, to be honest.
So what if we get a semi-GM bonus to healing, but concentrated exclusively on Water Manipulation for our GM thing?
While we're at it, is Mik's bonus to healing higher than his one to Water manipulation? If yes, why? You said we'd have the sams bonus to healing as other GMs who didn't get a healing Semi-GM bonus.
>>
>>40906472
No.
>>
>>40906509
>*Frosty: Largely able to ignore cold, +4 bonus to ice and freezing based spells, +4 bonus to healing, sanity fortified by stoic mentality.
It's in the character sheet. Mik doesn't get a flat bonus to water manipulation but rather only a bonus to ice and freezing based spells. Rotting things is a freezing based spell. It's freezing cells and thus destroying them, frostbite basically.

If you got a semi-GM bonus to healing you'd have a +8 to healing, but a +4 to water manipulation.
If you then focus exclusively on healing for your GM meditation AND pick a good meditation you'll get a trait that gives you a +8 to healing.
Your cumulative healing bonus would thus be +16, while your cumulative water manip bonus would be +8.
>>
>>40906554
Huh? I'm more confused than before.
So we got +4 to ice/freezing and +4 to healing but +0 to wet water because of our GM method. But where is the bonus for our semi-GM healing specialization?
>>
>>40906640
The bonus from semi-GM healing specialization vanishes once you actually reach GM. It's not so much a separate bonus as it is simply the application of your flat GM bonus.
>>
>>40906661
Okay, now I think I got it. So a GM has a general +8 bonus for all subcategories of that element. Depending on the GM meditation he can get additional bonuses (up to another +8) for the subcategories he uses in the GM meditation. With the semi-GM specialization Mik had +8 to healing but +0 to ice and wet water, then reaching GM added the missing +8 to ice and wet water, bringing him to GM level (i.e. +8 to everything), and the GM method added those other +4. So his cumulative healing bonus IS +12, but it's not written that way, instead applied separately.
>>
You try to pass along a sense of pride and general approval via the connection you share with Zahak. You think he gets to point, judging by the flood of positive emotions you get in response. {Very impressive, Zahak! At this rate you may very well attain Mastery soon. I mean, but a few weeks ago you didn't know any Water magic and now you can manipulate water better than many robed Vatis. However, I must caution you not to forget that Water magic is more than just Water manipulation. It's also healing.}

Zahak's general elation is tempered by respect and determination as he responds. {I know, Papa! I've been trying to heal things but healing this is hard because I usually only have to heal them if I'm the one that hurt them in the first place and it seems cruel not to mention they look so tasty so I usually just end up eating them before I really make any progress.}

He's practicing healing on his prey? You suppose that would make sense, it's not like he could easily wound himself. {How are you progressing in other fields of magic? Have you been having any trouble?}

Zahak rolls in the water, using his wings to push himself forward in the water. He's actually a pretty fast swimmer. Probably faster than any average person. You wonder if there are a type of dragon accustomed to living underwater? You could certainly picture it, based on what you've seen of Zahak so far.

Once he reaches the edge of the cliff face which drops off into the water, rather than using the stairs to climb back up he just digs his foreclaws into the stone and starts pulling himself upwards. You feel him channeling magic each time he sinks his claws into the stone, a surprisingly subtle use of Earth magic all things considered. He only responds once he pulls himself over the edge. {Chryssa has been teaching me Earth magic and I think I'm getting to be pretty good but I'm still learning. I can also see things without looking at them! Karim taught me that.}

(1/2)
>>
>>40906933
If Mik had done semi-GM specialization in wet water, he would have had +8 to that earlier, but by reaching GM the other subcategories would have caught up and he would have finally been in the same spot.
>>
So he's gotten better in Earth and Nature as well as Water. Seems the only thing he hasn't advanced in is Fire magic, but you imagine he just needs some time. {That's good to hear. I have noticed that you're wasting a lot of vys in the way you cast. You have a large vys pool, so it's not as much of a concern, but you'll find you can accomplish a lot more if you simply let the vys you spend act as it wills. The best way to approach magic in my experience is to alter the spell as little as possible.}

Zahak seems to take your advice seriously, judging by the vague sense you get of his emotions. His mind is focused, analyzing everything you've said. {Have I missed anything else since I was away?}

Zahak nods his head swiftly. {Yeah! I was exploring the caves yesterday and you'll never guess what I found! There was a chest in a chamber beneath this one and it was full of gold and silver and pearls! I added it to my hoard. I also found a golden sword lying around and added it too. My hoard is still too small to sleep on top of, but maybe someday!}

You raise an eyebrow curiously. You know there's some strange things beneath El-Amin but you hadn't imagined a treasure chest would be among them. Then again, maybe that's an oversight on your part. {What else have you found in the tunnels beneath my estate? Anything of any particular interest?}

Zahak leans back, balancing himself on his hind legs for a moment and cocking his head to one side. {Umm... I found a tunnel that was full of molten rock. I laid down in it and it was really comfortable but it started to hurt after a while so I got out and had rock all over me so I had to have Chrys help me get it off but it was still nice. Then there was a really weird animal we found that was sort of like a giant snake with a bunch of writing all over it and I tried to burn it but it just spit something at me so we ran away.}

Woah, what? That seems like something you should've been informed of. {What do you mean there was a giant snake monster, and what did it spit at you? Did it hurt you, are you okay? Did you attack it first or did it attack you?}

Zahak seems to shrink up a bit, pulling his wings around himself a little tighter. {It was a giant snake! Sort of. It had scales, but they were carved with yellow writing, and I think it was made of stone. Also it didn't have fangs. It had these long feeler things on the front of its face where its mouth should be. I don't think it had a real mouth. Oh, and it was really really REALLY long! Like, it filled the entire chamber! It had two eyes, but not like you. There was a top eye and then a much bigger bottom eye. I attacked it first, but only because it grabbed me with one of its feeler thingies!}
(1/2)
>>
You wonder what the writing on its scales could mean, and made of stone? What if it's some sort of ancient guardian? {Where was it? Do you think you could find your way back there on your own?}

Zahak shrugs, as much as a dragon can shrug. {It was really really deep underground. We followed the river of molten rock as far as we could and then found its chamber at the end. I could probably find my way back, but I wouldn't want to. It was really big and scary looking. It felt weird too.}

Perhaps you'll need to check that out later. It sounds like it's some sort of construct, or perhaps a Rhynian experiment gone awry. However, it's not an immediately pressing concern. {So long as it doesn't try to leave it's chamber it shouldn't cause us any problems, I suppose. Now, where is this hoard of yours?}

Zahak turns to look at a distant overhang carved into the ceiling, and then back at you. After a moment's pause his thoughts filter through your mental connection. {One second!} Is all he says before getting a running start towards the ledge and propelling himself into the air.

His wings snap taut and he soars around the cavern, building up speed. He does a few circuits before he comes swooping towards you, the talons on his hind legs spread wide as if to pluck you up by the shoulders. You stretch out your hands in preparation and his claws snatch you up by the wrist, pain shooting through you from the cuts covering your arms underneath your bandages but you bite back your voice.
(2/3)
>>
Zahak apparently hadn't thought out landing, because as he approaches the carved out overhang he just lets you go. You manage to soften your landing by turning to area you fall on into sand, rolling a few feet before coming to a stop. Zahak lands a few feet further into the alcove, skidding to a halt before turning towards you with a worried expression. {I'm sorry! Are you okay? I thought I could just land but then I realized that if I did that I'd be landing on your arms and that would probably hurt so I let you go but then you fell and I didn't mean to! Honest!}

You wave him down, gesturing for him to calm himself. {Relax, Zahak. I'm not hurt. However, I could have been. You need to warn people before you just pluck them up and carry them off. Others might have panicked, and a panicked person might have tried to hurt you. As well, you should think these things through more thoroughly. I believe talking to others about your plans before executing them will help with this, as you'll be submitting your ideas to outside review. They'll be able to point things out you may have overlooked.}

He lowers his head, looking terribly apologetic, but bucks up as you wander further into this little cave on the ceiling he's carved himself, or perhaps merely acquisitioned for his purposes. Your burning blanket is sitting on top of a pile of gold and silver spilling from a tipped over and at least partially rotten chest. There's a depression on top of the pile, presumably where Zahak lays his head.

You also spy a sword laying at the edge of the pile, it's old, very old, and constructed in a strange style. The cross guard is wide and the blade flares out around the base. There's also a raised dome where the hilt meets the blade, presumably holding everything together. It's simply made of iron, with the gold layered on top, but it hasn't rusted. It looks practically new, in fact. You wonder if it's enchanted? If it is, it's not a particularly impressive enchantment. The weapon doesn't exude magic as most powerful artifacts seem to.

(1/2)
>>
You also spy a silver chain you don't remember getting him, and a few pearls scattered about amongst the gold and silver. There's also a ruby the size of your eye just sitting off to the side, as if it rolled off the pile. While all no doubt valuable, they're obviously mundane.

You wander towards his hoard, it really is fairly respectable. You'd guess he has about thirteen hundred silver here, give or take a few dozen or so. You'd need to actually count it to be certain. What really interest you is the sword though. {Impressive indeed, Zahak. You've done well to grow this from the few gold that I gave you initially. I'm also pleased to see you've kept the blanket I made for you, even if you've started to outgrow it.}

He draws himself up, practically glowing with pride. However, you temper your praise a moment later. {Do keep in mind, and I want to be clear that I'm not admonishing you with this statement, that the size of one's hoard is not everything. Family and friends must take priority over wealth. Still, I'm proud of the small fortune you've managed to accumulate.}

You pluck up the sword from the edge of the pile, finding that you need to use two hands just to lift it. The gold makes the blade inordinately heavy, and all the decoration gives it an extremely low center of gravity. Both aspects combine to make the sword terribly unwieldy, a blade made for show rather than use. You try channeling vys into it, but nothing happens. Likewise when you swing the blade hard into the stone walls of the cavern it does nothing more than put a mark in the wall. You will remark that the blade isn't damaged, so it's probably just reinforced or enchanted in some similarly simple way.

You stick it firmly into the pile of gold and turn your attention to Zahak. {Now then, shall we return? I think it would be best if I rode on your back this time, rather than having you carry me and risk falling or damaging my cloak. Assuming of course that's okay with you.}

Zahak cocks his head to one side. {Why wouldn't I want you riding on my back? It makes sense, you're tiny and I'm big and I can carry you because I'm strong.}
(1/3)
>>
You shrug your shoulders, and start towards Zahak. He turns to one side and dips his shoulder, spreading out one of his wings so you can climb onto his back. You notice that a row of spikes descends down his spine, but around mid spine, just behind his wings, there's a space where the spikes turn instead to a series of knobbly ridges. An idea occurs to you, and you return briefly to the pile to retrieve the burning blanket you made Zahak.

Draping the blanket over the space on his back devoid of spikes you climb on top of him, situating yourself on the blanket and grabbing hold of the spikes to keep yourself stable. Sadly there's not really any place to put your feet, you suppose you could hook them under his wings but that probably wont work once he actually takes flight. Instead you just grip tight to his flanks as he advances towards the precipice.

He leaps off, and you experience a brief moment of weightlessness as he tumbles towards the cave floor below. You struggle to maintain your grip, only to be thrown forward as his wings snap out to catch the air and slow his descent. You very nearly impale yourself on the tip of one of the spikes protruding from his back but barely manage to avoid that fate as he circles around the cove.

The brief panic is replaced by elation at the realization that you're flying, or rather, you're on the back of a dragon while it's flying. Not since you got to soar through the air as a weightless shadow after drinking the incorporeality potion have you felt so carefree. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end and eventually Zahak comes to an easy landing on top of one of the wooden platforms embedded in the walls. You carefully slide off Zahak's back, thankful that you manage to avoid smashing your family jewels into anything.

>>
Curious, you probe your draconic son's thoughts. {Did you have any trouble carrying me? Was I heavy at all?}

Zahak shakes his head. {No, not really. At first it was hard to adjust but it wasn't that much different from carrying you in my talons or from plucking a camel out of the desert to drop against the rocks.}

An unsettling comparison, but you suppose it's a good enough method of hunting. You think you've seen birds doing something similar. You wonder if that's where he got the idea?

You glance towards the entrance to the cove, pleased to see that it's probably only about two hours past midnight. Maybe three, at most. You've still got plenty of time before sunrise. Turning your attention to Zahak you reach through your connection to propose an idea. {How does going hunting sound? I imagine at this hour we'll be able to find a few nocturnal predators on the hunt, might prove interesting to turn them into our prey.}

Zahak's tail starts lashing back and forth and he leans back, jutting his wings forward. The overall effect reminds you of a puppy eager to play with a new toy. {Yeah! I've gotten really good at hunting and with magic so it will be really cool to show you what I can do! I hope you'll be proud of me! Do you want to ride on my back again? It will be faster and I won't have to slow down because I won't have to walk. I'm not that great at walking like you do, but I can fly so I think that makes up for it!}

Gods above, but Zahak is excitable. His thoughts run through your head at a mile a minute. You merely smile in response before carefully removing your cloak and starting to pull off your robes. {Yeah, I'll ride on your back. Just give me a moment to change and put on my armor.}

Once you've removed your robes you stuff them in your cloak, so as to avoid damaging them, then start the laborious task of putting on your warlock armor. Starting with the boots you armor yourself in the ancient armor, golden beads dangling from the pauldrons and clattering together quietly as you struggle with the last of your armor. Finally you withdraw your helmet and slide it over your head, the spike shooting into your neck only once you seal the helmet shut. You spasm briefly as it embeds itself in your flesh, but soon the pain is washed away under a constant flow of vys.

That done you extract your Scorpion Shield from your cloak. Much to your surprise as you strap it onto your forearm the material of the shield seems to meld with the material of your armor, until the entire gauntlet has fused with the back of the tower shield, save for your fingers which you can fortunately still move. You focus on the shield detaching and it starts to do so, but it's a slow process. Hopefully this means nobody will be able to remove your shield without first tearing off your arm.
>Affinity Bonus: Shield of the Scorpion (+4 Attack, +6 Soak, +4 Dodge, Hidden Effects)

Once fully armored you drape your cloak over your shoulders and turn once more to Zahak, who's been waiting patiently all the while. You haul yourself onto his back with surprising ease, the movements coming naturally to you. It's as if you've spent your entire life atop a dragon's back. You need not spur him on or anything of that nature, you merely will him to take flight via the connection you share and he happily does so, launching the two of you off the edge of the platform.

Zahak rockets through the mouth of the cove, flapping his wings only once you're both safely over the ocean. He gains altitude slowly, likely worried about throwing you off by accident. For your part you keep a tight grip on Zahak's spikes with your right hand and simply keep your left, your shield arm, close to your body to avoid having it catch the wind and pull you off as a result.

Eventually your draconic son makes a wide turn back towards land, and then you're soaring over the endless dunes. To your left you can see the City of El-Amin, but it's several miles away. Beyond you can distantly make out the plateaus of northwestern Pidjata, where most of the region's food is grown. However, Zahak turns due east, steadily gaining altitude until everything beneath you appears impossibly small. The air is thinner up here, though your armor compensates so that you have no trouble breathing.

You fly for only a few minutes before Zahak takes a sharp dive, his wings folding back. You grip the spike protruding from his spine in a death grip as the wind rushes past you, a deafening maelstrom roaring in your ears as the ground seems to rush towards you. You only barely manage to maintain your grip, in large part due to the assistance of your armor, and then all at once Zahak snaps out his wings and rears back, before banking sharply.

Your heart is pounding in your chest at a mile a minute and adrenaline roars in your ears but you're alive, more so than usual in fact. You're barely hanging onto Zahak with one leg hooked onto his side and the other dangling out into empty space, moments away from a five or six hundred foot drop. Below you a pack of sixteen or twenty Pidjatan lions stalk a long-necked Kateri, a type of reptilian creature which burrows beneath the sand with its long claws and uses its neck to reach the burrows of rodents and other small mammals which live beneath the sands.

They seem to have wounded it already, there's blood pouring from its neck and staining the sand behind it. You imagine they're simply waiting for it to die at this point. You can feel Zahak questioning, asking if these are acceptable prey.

From what you recall, Pidjatan lions are an experiment of the Rhynians gone awry. They released them into the desert, magically altered lions which possessed a sort of telepathic hive mind, in order to disrupt Hiacian supply lines. However, their ploy backfired. The lions were too smart, and soon began raiding the Rhynians and Hiacians both. Ever since they've been a plague, and a fairly hefty reward is offered for anyone who can bring in their tails, which are rather distinctively barbed.

Remember what our armor can do:

The torso seems to mostly have enchantments related to physical abilities. Raw vys will enhance all of your physical abilities to some extent. Fire will enhance your strength and speed, at the expense of stamina and mental coherence. Water will allow you to more easily bend and flow around attacks, but seems to detriment one's strength and physical toughness. Earth is the opposite, it allows one to whether even the most powerful of blows, but you'll be hard pressed to move an inch while channeling Earth magic. Nature doesn't seem to do anything, unfortunately.

The boots seem to have paired enchantments, a note in the margins mentions that you can't channel vys into one boot without channeling it into the other as well. The gauntlets and pauldrons are likewise paired. The enchantments for both are fairly similar, the only difference being the delivery of the attack. Channeling fire will wreath either your boots or gauntlets in flame. Channeling water will freeze whatever you strike. Channeling Earth will rapidly erode whatever it is you touch. Channeling Nature allows you to more easily manipulate the movements of plantlife.

The greaves don't seem to do much of anything, unfortunately. Presumably Metal magic channeled into them will still result in them being reinforced, but other than that the Varistha didn't remark on any effects when combined with other elements.

I agree lets stop taking these hive mind lion things seriously, our skill with a spear takes priority here.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKaYOW9zMoY

You decide it's probably in your best interest to plan this out to a certain extent, if only to avoid confusion once the attack starts. {Zahak, I think we should move in for the attack but there are a few things you should know about these creatures first.}

Zahak stops his descent, instead flapping his wings to gain a little altitude and maintain his speed while circling above the pack of lions. You continue, since he seems to be waiting for you to go on. {They're a hive mind. Each one contributes to the intelligence of the whole. With numbers like these, they're going to be very smart, and very dangerous. I've heard they can snatch guardsmen off the tops of El-Amin's walls, and that spells are very slow to affect them. Even if we have the height and maneuverability advantage, we need to be careful.}

Zahak is silent for a moment, watching the lions as they move in to finish off the long necked Kateri. One of them leaps at it, covering a solid fifteen feet in a single bound and slamming into the poor creature before ripping out its throat. It lashes weakly at the lion with its claws but can't seem to get through the hide. The entire pack moves in to start eating, while a few hang back. Some seem to have noticed you, because they're staring at the two of you as you circle above.

(1/4)
>>
You carefully slide your trident from your cloak, making sure not to accidentally touch Zahak with any of the prongs, before pointing it towards the mass of feeding lions. {Attack them while they're feeding. They ought to scatter, and then we can pick them off more easily. Some might escape, but it seems the safest plan to me.}

Zahak straightens out his flight path and gets some distance before banking sharply to the left and turning once more to face the pack of lions. You lean yourself forward, pressing against the spines protruding from his back as he accelerates. The wind deafens you, and you're flying so close to the ground it seems as though you could reach down and run your hand through it. Then all at once there's a roar, and a blast of heat and fire rushes by beneath you.

A chorus of roars ring out simultaneously across the desert as Zahak pulls up, and then you see one of them. It's running towards you, and leaps before Zahak can get high enough to evade. You thrust your trident forward on instinct as it gets close and it impales itself on the end of all three prongs. Another chorus of roars rings out across the desert as Zahak banks left and the lion's corpse slides off of your weapon, falling to the ground below.

As you once more get a glimpse of the lions you see that they've fanned out. There's a long line of glass in the sand, leading up to the scorched corpse of the Kateri. However, only one of the lions died in the attack. Many seem badly burned, but they're still in fighting shape. They're assuming a formation, such that you won't be able to attack one of them without being in leaping range of three others.

(2/4)
>>

Zahak banks sharply again and dives suddenly, his neck shooting forward and his jaws sinking into the flesh of one of the lions. It thrashes beneath you as he banks up, only for another to leap at you. You raise your shield and thrust it forward as the lion approaches, smashing it to the side. It still manages to rake its massive claws along Zahak's side, but the damage is superficial at worst.

Zahak breaths out a jet of flame through his clenched teeth, the dragon in its mouth falling still. He drops it a moment later and starts gaining altitude again, now that he's freed of the weight of the lion. That's three down, and eighteen to go. You channel a little vys to heal the wound in his side, which he seems grateful for.

You bank around and start your third strafing run. This time you'll be running down the formation's widest axis, hopefully allowing you to do more damage. As you draw close and Zahak hinges open his jaws you start channeling vys, turning the fire he breaths into a roiling ball of plasma which explodes on contact with the nearest lion. There's a rush of hot air from beneath you, but fortunately neither you nor Zahak are harmed.

It's as he starts to pull away that you feel a jolt, nearly throwing you from his back. Twisting your torso you see that a lion has managed to land itself on Zahak's back. It's impaled itself on the spines which line his back, and has started to rip into his flank with its teeth and claws. It manages to work through the hide with some difficulty, tearing away a long strip of flesh. Zahak roars out in pain, but try as you might you can twist around far enough to lash at it with your spear.

(3/4)
>>

>Great failure
>Not ending terribly
were the fucking do you think you are
>>
Hey, remember when our reason for making this trip back home was to appologize to our friends personally for mentaly showing them all we were having sex? Yeah, neither do I.
>>
So instead you channel vys, jabbing two spikes of ice through its eyes and a third through its jaw. Rotting the flesh of its abdomen you manage to dislodge it from Zahak's spines and it slides off, falling to the distant sands below. That wound it left is pretty bad though, a gaping hole in his rear leg. You manage to heal him, but it's far costlier than it should be for some reason or another.
>Vys Pool: (45/47) (Added 2 to the cost just from spells you would've cast anyway)

As Zahak banks around again you see that the plasma explosion managed to kill more of them than you'd thought. You count sixteen left of the twenty one you started with. You urge Zahak to strafe again, and this time instead of just protecting him from attacks you extend your trident and channel vys. Even as fire spews from Zahak's maw it shoots from your spear, incinerating three more of the beast before Zahak pulls up and starts gaining altitude again.

He starts circling, seemingly reluctant to start another strafing run. Only thirteen remain, but they're scattered. You'd be unlikely to kill more than one or two on any given strafing run and you'd be highly open to attack. Some have burried themselves partially in the sand, while others have taken up elevated positions on dunes. Four lines have gathered in a tight cluster at the center of this killing field, bait you imagine. Unfortunately tempting bait.

>Urge Zahak to strafe again, aiming to incinerate the four in the center.
>Urge Zahak to land, and enter melee.
>Ask Zahak to fly low so you can bail out and draw their attention while he loops around for another strafing run.

The thing is, large expenditures of vys have no downside until we start getting penalties to rolls or run out. There is no mechanical difference between 50 and 30 vys, so it is better to spend hard and fast unless we expect a fight to last longer than our vys pool can sustain the output. Even then, we have vys restoring items for a reason. In the fight against the disciple there was at least one roll where we spent for regular success when we could have gotten great success. That was probably the right decision.

Are you being fucking serious right now? The only thing that we could be possibly improving right now is Small unit tactics, and even that bonus would be negligible since it was just a regular success. We're better off spending the vys and getting this fight over with fast and clean. I mean, we're a vatis, we're focused on using vys, it kind of defeats the point worrying about using magic over improving our other, lesser skills every goddamn time.

The pendant is a seed and the Centurion and Stone armor revert to they're natural state when you channel vys through them.
>>
You will Zahak to keep circling the lions below and gain altitude, he seems more than willing to obey. Once he's holding his position a few hundred feet above the accursed little bastards and you're not at immediate risk of being attacked you open up a line of communication with him, pushing your thoughts through your shared connection. {I have a plan to throw them off. You remember how to make illusions right?}

Zahak nods his head rapidly, and you continue. {Great, listen. I want you to help me create a series of illusory replicas of us rising over that dune over there.} You point to a distant rune which has been piled high by the wind, it towers over it surroundings. {We'll have them swoop in so the lions attack early and then we can run in and mop them up. I'll use Earth magic to raise spikes of stone from the ground while you focus on fire. Got it?}

Zahak responds enthusiastically. {Got it, Papa! This is the most fun I've ever had! It hurt, when I got bit, but that only means we have to punish them tenfold for the pain they caused us! Let us turn the sands they walk on to glass and burn the life from their pitiful bodies!}

That was unexpectedly violent but you suppose the thrill of battle affects everyone, and you're inclined to agree with his sentiment. {Quite so, Zahak. Quite so. When you feel me channeling vys, join in.}

You give him a few seconds to prepare and then begin twisting the light to your will, replicating the image of you and Zahak six times just behind that distant ridge. An instant later you feel the burden relaxed as Zahak joins his efforts with yours, and all six illusory replicas take flight at once. They look startlingly realistic, you can barely tell they're fake by a faint shimmer in the air around them. The lions have no chance of recognizing the spell for what it is.

(1/2)
>>
The six dragons gain height before swooping towards the pack of lions, which swiftly reorient to face this new threat. You and Zahak fall in at the rear, letting the illusions take up the vanguard. As you reach the trap they've set up four lions spring from the dunes, two attacking each of the illusions on your farthest flank. All thirteen of the lions roar in confusion and anger as their four compatriots sail through thin air and Zahak incinerates two, while you impale the other two on spikes of stone as they approach the ground. You flush two others from the sand by ripping open their abdomens even as Zahak torches the four which were standing in the center of the dunes as bait.

In one fell swoop you've managed to turn ten enemies into corpses and Zahak is starting to pull up when two more leap from the sands. One latches onto his neck with its powerful jaws, its teeth hooking onto the scales there but not managing to sink in. Another is sailing strait for you, jaws stretched wide and claws outstretched. You raise your shield and your spear, a jet of flame shooting from the tip of the spear even as you thrust it forward.

The lion sailing towards you is scorched, and then impaled. Zahak, meanwhile, cranes his neck down to grip the lion latched to his neck by its rear paws. He rips it off with a mighty swing of his head and hurls it bodily into the air, where it starts to spin rapidly as it sails first skywards and then starts its long descent, before ultimately landing awkwardly in the sands.

The last remaining uninjured lion seems to see the writing on the wall and flees further into the desert, while the wounded lion that Zahak tossed seems to have broken something and is struggling to push itself upright. For all intents and purposes, the battle is won. The sun is only just beginning to peak over the horizon.

Most, if not all, of the lions are now dead. In order to regrow tails and such, they have to still be living.

Also, regrowing an entire limb (even if it's just a tail) is going to be more expensive than simply regrowing skin.

Guys, the dragons start to deteriorate when their pack size grows large enough. It was a defense mechanism the Rhynians put in, that they break down or something if there's too many of them. To prevent them from growing too smart.

That was probably a really large pack, so bringing back forty tails will draw a metric shit ton of attention.

>"Oh wow 40 tails that's a fucking lot of lions"
>"Yeah I hunted around for a few days gathering these tails from different packs."
>>

its called hunting them slowly mik has been gone for almost 2 weeks.
You act like this magically makes it look like we have a dragon helping us.

I say we use the tails more as a way to make amends for letting our unbanishment leak.
Gain some good faith with the shah, and some more prestige for our self.
It'd be great if he is dealing with us in good faith when we start charging him for providing water to the city.
we will make more money long term.

><~Soma_QM> There was a period of the war where Hiacia and Rhynia worked together to wage war against the army of sentient lions Rhynia unleashed.
Jesus christ the lions were smart enough not to bunch up and form small armies.

Regrowing limbs is a GM ability and all GMs here except for us are state employees. There's nobody else TO pull this shit on them, why would they have a whole elaborate system to catch fraud that doesn't exist? Why add bureaucracy that would discourage hunters from killing this animal they really fucking want dead?

Kadir won't give a flying fuck about some lions.
