You are Captain WILLIAM PIERCE, a combat rescue officer of the United States Air Force!

It's a rather quiet ride as you sit in the back of the Osprey while Bullseye is at the helm. Your current destination was a French villa that Nungesser happened to own both for a bit of medical leave, as well as give your newest impromptu addition, the little witch Artya, a place to lay low for a while. However, as far as Bullseye was concerned, he was just flying you to a place owned by a friend of Janice's. You had elected not to tell him Nungesser was involved, both for the potential comedy as well as the fact that he might have just turned around and defected to Russia instead.

According to the timing, it would be an overnight flight over Europe, with a few refueling stops on the way. With your UN credentials, you practically had unlimited access with no questions asked, so it was a pretty nice setup. However, that would mean you'd be spending the night in the air, and basically be arriving at the villa in the morning, so you suggested to Laika, Misono, and Laika that they get sleep. Unfortunately, they decided to all sleep on you, with Misono and Arta's heads each taking a shoulder and Laika sitting securely in your lap.

"Looks pretty crowded there, sir." Rex says simply from across the center aisle.

"And weighs a lot, too." You wheeze. "Best feeling in the world, really."

"I'm sure it is." Rex nods, and is silent for a bit before speaking up. "You're going to keep her, aren't you?"

"What?" You blink.

"Artya." Rex states. "I know how this works. The fact you're going through all this effort looking out for her? You have no intention on giving her to the covens, are you?"

Well, you had to hand it to Rex. Whenever he did speak, he always cut straight to the point.

"I'm actually not sure myself." You sigh. "I mean, it might be a part of my nature as an emergency responder, but in a matter of weeks I have somehow acquired two, possibly three foster daughters. I have no idea what the hell is going on anymore."

And with that, Rex actually chuckles a little.

"Funny thing, Frank seems to be in the exact same situation."

"Really?" You raise an eyebrow. "You've been talking to him?"

"Yeah, we've been trading letters a bit recently." Rex shrugs. "Then again, if I want to find out anything about Frank, I just have to turn on the evening news."

"Ah, the perks of being related to a celebrity, right?" You laugh lightly. "So what's going on with him?"

"As far as I can tell, he's already adopted two young witches, possibly a third."

"Weird coincidence." You frown. "Waitaminute, didn't you mention before that he-"

"Yes. To three witches."

"And if they all want kids-"

"Not a question of 'if.'"

"Christ, and I thought I was going to be in for a rough time." You shake your head.

"Yeah, that's Frank for you. Always getting into trouble." Rex nods.

"Hey, guys, we're here!" Bullseye calls out. "And... CHRIST. This place is huge!"

You glance towards the cockpit and out the front windshields of the Osprey, where you could see a large castle suspended over a river. Large gardens and forests and fields surrounding the place for miles around. It was the textbook definition of those fancy European castles you had read about.

"Jeez, the French certainly don't spare any expense." Bullseye grumbles as he touches the Osprey down on the lawn in front of the chateau and powers down the engines. "Anyways, you didn't mention who owned this place..."

You wonder if you should tell him right now. It'd give him a healthy headstart. Then again, you didn't really want to spoil the surprise...

"Strike witches" are young women who can use magic to operate specalist military machinery. There's an anime of it which the QM Planefag turned into a real-world setting for his quest. Said setting was modified WW2. It was extremely successful.

Stirkie witches 89 is the "future" continuation of it set in 1989. It is run by Ghostdivision and is very sucsessful.

This quest is a spin-off of SW:89. I advise you read ALL of Planefag's quest, Ghost-division's quest, Merc's quest AND most of the other spin-offs if you want to fully understand everything.

"Yeah, I'm not too sure either." You lie. You just couldn't resist. "All I know is that it's a friend of Janice's."

"Huh. Well, I guess Janice does know a lot of people with far too much money." Bullseye grunts. "Well, let's get out and stretch our legs."

"Right right." You wiggle around to try and rouse your girls. "All right, girls, rise and shine. We're here."

"Five more minutes please..." Misono sighs.

"I don't wanna!" Laika groans.

Artya just wraps her arm around yours even tighter.

"Aw jeez." You shake your head. "Rex, a little help here?"

"Sure thing, sir." Rex gets up and picks up Laika, getting her off your lap.

"Nuuuuuuu!" Laika whines, her arms flailing uselessly.

Now free of Laika's weight, you gently push Misono's head off of your shoulder, and she yawns and rubs her eyes. Getting Artya off of your arm, however, is a bit more difficult. She's holding onto it extremely tight. In the end, you're forced to just stand up and half drag her out.

Compared to the eternally muggy, polluted air of eastern Ukraine, France was a refreshing change of pace. The sky was sapphire blue, and the air was crisp and fresh, making it feel like you'd melt like chocolate every time you breathed in.

"Ah! Bonjour, Captain! Welcome to my chateau!"

You look up to see Nungesser, dressed in a simple white sundress. Illuminated by the morning sun, her dress left VERY little to the imagination. Fortunately, your girls seemed to be too drowsy and disoriented to notice.

"Nun!" Bullseye chokes and turns to you. "You... you TRAITOR."

"Sometimes an officer needs to make a tough command decision." You say with a smile. "Sometimes he must lead his men into mortal danger."

Bullseye makes a move to try and make a run for the trees, but Nungesser is far ahead of him there. In a flash, Nungesser uses her trademark speed to cover the distance between her and her love, tackling Bullseye onto the grass.

"Ah, do not leave just yet, Bullseye, you've only just arrived!" She cooes, kissing him on the cheek.

"Yeah, well, I guess your house is nice." Bullseye grumbles, admitting defeat.

"Ah, Captain, you can proceed to the front door. My caretaker will show you to your rooms! I will give Bullseye a 'personal tour' of the grounds!"

"Thanks, Nun.' You smile. "You two have fun!"

"Damn you." Bullseye groans.

"That's 'damn you, sir.'" You correct him before walking off with Rex and the girls.

"That was pretty mean." Rex shakes his head as he hands Laika back to you, and she wraps her arms around your shoulders and yawns loudly.

"Admit it, you were enjoying it as much as I was." You laugh.

"Nungesser-senpai certainly is very... aggressive." Misono nods. "Perhaps I could learn much from-"

"Maybe after you have a few more years under you belt." You grunt.

Meanwhile, Artya still clings to your other arm. There's a weird hacking sound underneath her mask which you realize must be her laughter.

"Ah, you must by Lady Nungesser's guests." A finely dressed butler steps forward from the shade of the front door and bows. "I am Jacques, the caretaker of this estate. I shall show you to your rooms. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask."

You look around and notice that besides Jacques, your group, and Nungesser, there was practically nobody else around.

"Are you the only one here?" You ask, looking around both the gardens and the chateau. It was quiet, almost too quiet.

"Yes, other than Lady Nungesser and her consort, we are the only ones here." Jacques nods. "She has not told you?"

"Told me what?" You say as you heft a softly snoring Laika.

"Nungesser is the last of her line." He says simply. "Her parents went missing in a presumed plane crash, and she was an only child. I assumed she had told you this."

"No, she never mentioned it." You frown.

"My apologies, then. I spoke out of line, then." Jacques says, though you suspect he did that entirely on purpose. "She's been terribly lonely for quite some time, so it is enjoyable to see her have company over, no?"

"Yeah." You nod. Perhaps that explained Nungesser's extremely frank and open nature.

"Regardless, if it is privacy you are seeking, you will find plenty here. I can guarantee there are no other people for miles around." Jacques continues.

He then guides you through more rooms and halls, until he brings you to an extremely lavish stateroom, that put the five star hotel in Washington DC to shame. Everything, from the genuine wood and the gold plating, screamed ROYALTY. You sort of wonder how Nungesser's family managed to get a place like this.

"This shall be your personal room." Jaques says. "Your companion and the young ladies shall have their own separate rooms, unless you object."

"Have the girls stay in the rooms closest to mine." You request. "I want to give them their privacy, but I want them close in case they need me."

"Understood." Jacques nods. "Should you require my services, just press this button next to the bed."

"Thanks." You nod.

Jacques then guides you to another stateroom next to yours, which also has a connecting door. You gently settle Laika down in the bed, while Artya carefully walks over to it and sits down, giving a nonverbal help as she sinks into the soft fabric. She then bounces up and down to test it.

"You like the bed?" You ask.

Artya's masked face turns to you and she just nods rapidly. Who knows how long it was since she slept in an actual bed.

"If you would like, you may rest here for the moment, unless you would like to leave for some activities? We may tour the grounds or go to the nearby village for additional provisions, if you so wish."

"How about we get a look at the grounds?" You ask. "We got plenty of sleep on the way here."

Jacques raises an eyebrow and glances at Laika.

"She likes sleeping in." You explain. "Don't worry. Once she gets going she's an uncontrollable little ball of energy."

"Ah." Jacques nods. "Where would you like to start? Lady Nungesser has authorized me to show you the entire chateau, including her own room, should you wish. She mentioned that it would be a very 'educational' opportunity for your girls."

You wonder what exactly that meant. With Nungesser, you could never be too sure.

"Or we can tour the grounds. It appears at least one of you is the outdoors type, after all." Jacques glances at Artya.

That made sense as well. Also, if you went outside, maybe you'd get to see how Bullseye was doing, as well.

I'd like to think that Nun can take her mind off sex long enough to show off her home to Bullseye. It's the first time her lover gets to see the place where she grew up in.

Of course Bullseye, knowing Nun, would mainly see the various sights as places that he will be ravished in.

Nun: "And this is my bowyer! I often spend my afternoons here just drinking wine and eating cheese."
Bullseye: "We're totally going to end up doing [REDACTED] in the bowyer."

"How about giving us a tour of the gardens?" You ask.

"Of course." Jacques nods and strides out, motioning you to follow. Misono and Artya get up, and Rex carefully lowers Laika into a portable wheelchair he had brought. "This way."

Jacques lead you out of the chateau and into the gardens, and now that you're a bit more awake, you can get a clearer look at the gardens and appreciate them a bit more. Again, compared to the drab, and dreary Ukrainian countryside, everything here was vivid and bright. Green, perfectly trimmed hedges and grass lined every walkway, and was accented with a rainbow of differently colored flowers and blossoms. The only thing marring the sight was the landed Osprey on the lawn.

"This chateau and its gardens were originally built here in the early 1500s, and though there have been several major renovations over the centuries, the chateau and its gardens have been kept in their original state since they were first built. In effect, what you see is what the chateau would have looked like five hundred years ago."

"Interesting." You nod. "If you're the only one here, does that mean you've been maintaining this entire garden yourself?"

"Yes, well, as you can imagine, a man like me has plenty of free time." Jacques says matter of factly.

"It's beautiful." Misono gasps, her head swiveling nonstop. "So this is what a Western garden looks like!"

"I think it's a bit of an exception." You laugh as you glance at Artya, who likewise is looking around wildly. "Enjoying the view?"

Artya nods, but then tugs at your sleeve and points to the treeline. Perhaps she wants a taste of wilderness?

Bullseye: Soooo... we're going to do [REDACTED] on the roofs, bonnets and in the back seats of these cars?

VT-chan is the concubine. The Powers couple rides her hard and rough. She will then be passed down to Lucina Powers.

"Hey, Jacques, how about we go into the forest?" You ask.

"For what reason? It is just wilderness out there." Jacques looks to you, a bit bewildered.

"Yes, well, Artya here wants to take a look. She's kind of an outdoors girl."

"I see, I see." Jacques nods and sighs. "If I had know this, I would have worn sturdier footwear, but alas, it is not a caretaker's duty to question."

Jacques then steps off the path and leads you into the trees.

"Most of the forest here is still wilderness. In older times, the local nobles used to hunt game here. However, the practice unfortunately stopped when the Martians landed. Though the trees have grown back, much the wildlife has yet to return."

"I see." You nod. "I'm actually surprised a lot of these old buildings are still standing."

"Most of the Martians' efforts were focused on the main cities. They were largely uninterested or incapable of securing the entire countryside." Jaques explains. "Afterwards, there was a bit of a chaotic time as exiled French families rushed back to lay claim to abandoned estates. That is actually how the Nungesser family managed to acquire this property."

"You don't say." You nod as you glance at the girls. Misono seemed to be rather ambivalent, while Artya was practically skipping between the trees, taking in pretty much every sight she could. Rex was forced to give Laika a piggyback ride, since the wheelchair couldn't be moved through this terrain.

Suddenly, there's a rustling in the bushes. You all pause.

"Jacques, there aren't any dangerous animals in these woods, are there?" You ask carefully.

"None that I am aware of." Jacques takes a fighting stance. "Though I do know some of our neighbors keep 'exotic' pets..."

You see Misono put a hand on her sheathed katana, and Rex slowly reaching for his handgun.

Suddenly, Nungesser pops out of the bushes, her formerly white sundress now marred with mud and grass stains, her hair frazzled and full of grass blades and leaves.

"Lady Nungesser." Jacques relaxes his stance, apparently not surprised at this turn of events. "I take it your courtship is going well?"

"A bit of a snag." Nungesser smiles. "Bullseye said he needed to relieve himself, but then just up and disappeared! Perhaps he's preparing a surprise for me?"

Somehow you don't believe that he is.

"If you want, I can track him down." Jacques bows. "I suggest you return to the chateau to get a change of clothes."

"Hmmm, good idea, Jacques!" Nungesser nods with a wide smile. "Ah, Captain! Perhaps you would like to bring the girls along? I have quite a few clothes that don't fit me anymore, perhaps they wouldn't mind a few royal hand me downs?"

THIS seems to wake up Laika. Misono tries to pretend she's not interested, while Artya's posture suggests she's a bit perplexed at what's going on.

"Yeah, let's head back then." You nod. "Jacques, you sure you can handle this on your own?"

"Do not worry. Hunting and tracking is another set of skills expected of a man in my position." Jacques says as he pulls out an old lever action rifle you don't recall him ever carrying with him.

"You're not going to shoot Uncle Bullseye, are you?!" Laika gasps.

"This is merely to intimidate him into surrendering peacefully." Jacques assures her. "It's not even loaded."

With that, Jacques gives a polite nod to you and Nungesser before disappearing into the brush.

"Jesus, where did you find this guy, Nun?" You blink.

"He is certainly... skilled for a simple caretaker." Misono agrees.

"Jacques has been the caretaker here as long as I could remember." Nungesser smiles. "I believe his parents were part of the Resistance during the Martian War."

"I see." You nod. The Martian War generation was a pretty crazy one, if the stories you heard were true.

"Anyways! Let's go!" Nungesser says happily.

You all follow Nungesser as she energetically bounces all the way back to the chateau, where she opens the large oak doors to her bedroom. As you enter, you note that it's not much different from your own room, except it was much larger and fancier, if that was possible. There as also a large king size bed, and quite a few books piled around. Artya casually picks up one of the books and examines it. She then waves it in front of Laika, presumably for translation.

"The Dragonriders of Texas." Laika says. "I don't recognize this book."

Huh, from what you remember, it was an extremely trashy fantasy romance novel series. Critics absolutely hated it, but that didn't stop it from being one of the most popular book series in the world, particularly among witches. You heard that it was even getting a movie version soon, too.

"It's only the most romantic book ever written!" Misono squeals.

"I know, right?!" Nungesser smiles.

"Yes, and-" Misono then freezes when she realizes she had destroyed her own facade and her face flushes red. "Errr, it's an interesting series..."

"Is it any good?" Laika frowns as she flips through the pages. "There's no pictures..."

"Don't worry, it's for older girls." You say.

"Hmmmmmm." Laika frowns not quite convinced. "I can fly a super advanced fighter plane, but I can't read one measly book?"

"The Dragonriders of Texas is a series that transcends all age barriers!" Nungesser insists.

"Coming from you, that only proves my point more." You shake your head. You gently snatch the book from Laika's hands and set it down on the table. "Anyways, Nun, what kind of clothes were you talking about?"

"These!" Nungesser smiles as she opens her closet door.

"Are you sure that's a closet?" Rex raises an eyebrow.

"It's a walk-in closet." Nungesser insists.

"No, it's an entire room within a room!" Misono gasps. "Are Westerners really so shameless?"

"Nah, just the French." You quip.

"Please, every, focus!" Nungesser motions to what's actually inside the "closet". "Look!"

And that's where you see it. Rows upon rows of clothes of all sizes and types. Everything from evening gowns, dresses, skirts, to more casual t-shirts and jeans and everything in between.

"Okay, I have to admit, that's impressive." You nod.

"This is just for you?" Rex asks, bewildered.

"WOOOOOOW." Laika's eyes widen to almost the size of dinner plates.

"Yes! My personal collection!" Nungesser says happily. "Now, this matter is for girls only! So you two will have to shoo!"

"Right, I'm going to make a call to Janice. Get an update on what's going on in Ukraine." You say. "You can go ahead and find Bullseye. It'll do us no good if he gets lost in that forest.

"Right. Good luck, sir." Rex salutes.

"You're the one that's going to be needing it." You chuckle as you return the salute.

After Rex makes his exit, you head back into the chateau's main hall, where you remember Jacques showing you where the phone was. It was one of the few links to the outside world. You pick up the receiver and dial in the special number Utabe gave you, which would give you direct access to the UN's phone network. After a drawn out verification process with a nameless operator, you're finally connected to the UN base in Ukraine.

"Will!" Janice says happily. "I take it you arrived safely?"

"Safe and sound. The girls are playing dress up with Nun right now." You report.

"Oh my, I would've loved to be there!" Janice says sadly. "Take pictures for me, okay?"

"I'm sure Nun has that taken care of." You laugh before moving on to business. "So how are things holding up?"

"The rate of refugees coming in is starting to slow down and become more manageable. I think every that could evacuate has already done so, so now the focus is moving them all further west." Janice sighs. "There's still a lot of radiation poisoning cases, though. Far too many. The healwitches here including me and Red are being pushed to the limit."

"Is Red okay?" You ask worriedly.

"Oh, you know Red, there's not much that can put her down." Janice gives a tired chuckle. "Though I've had to rein her in several times."

"As long as she knows her limits." You sigh. "And what about the Ukrainian coven? Any luck contacting them?"

"I did manage to get in contact with their matrons" Janice says. "They've agreed to keep the investigation secret. I've given them all the details on Artya I could, so it's up to them to find her in their records, if they exist at all. It could take days to sort out, maybe even longer."

"I see." You sigh. "What about Tarin and Ghost? What have they been up to?"

"Oh, they've been rather invaluable in performing more search and rescue missions. They've helped save countless lives!" Janice explains. "Also, Colonel Kelsey wants to speak with you about something. I'm not sure what, be he insists on telling you in person, though it's not particularly time sensitive. Would you like me to send him over to you?"

"Sure, there's no harm in meeting us here." You shrug. "Send him the location."

"All right, I'll direct him over there. He's actually in England right now so he should be there within the day." Janice says. "Are the girls doing all right? What about Artya?"

"The girls are fine. Like I said, they've having fun with Nun. Artya seems to having a good time, too." You explain. "So don't worry about them. Besides, if anything happens, we have one of the most powerful French witch aces to watch out backs, right?"

"I suppose so." Janice giggles. "Anyways, I have to go. Duty calls and everything. Good luck, hope to see you soon!"

"Yeah, same." You respond as there's an audible click of the line being cut.

Suddenly, the door to Nungesser's room cracks open and she pokes her head out.

"Coming!" You shout back as you hustle up the stairs to her room. "Well? What's the result?"

"Resounding success!" Nungesser gives you two thumbs up. "First we have little Laika here!"

Laika is dressed in what looks to be combination of a sweater and a sundress. Some kind of winterdress or something like that. Laika, for her part, seems to enjoy the new outfit.

"Willy! Look!" She giggles. "I feel like a grownup now!"

"Heh, but you're still too small to be one!" You smile as you pick up up and spin her around a bit. "But you look lovely!"

"Hmph. Laika was all for it, but Misono and Artya proved to be a little shier!" Nungesser harumphs. "They're both still hiding in the closet. Maybe you can coax them out?"

"Come on, Misono, come on out." You say, like trying to coax a shy pet. "What happened to the pride of the eldest sister?"

"But I'm the big sister!" Laika pouts.

"Shush, not know, Laika." You chuckle and turn back to the closet. "I thought cowardice was dishonor in Japan!"

"W-well we're not in Japan!" Misono whimpers.

"Look, Misono, I know neither of us want to be sitting here all day, so how about we get this over with? Besides, there's no way you can embarrass yourself in front of your father."

"F-fine." Misono then steps out, showing that she was wearing an extremely, EXTREMELY revealing tank top and miniskirt. Her face is a solid beet red from embarrassment. You just give Nungesser a look that was a mix of both poison and curiosity.

"She seemed to be the type that would appreciating something risque!" Nungesser insists. "Plus she's at that age where she should be trying attract the attention of a boyfriend! Oh, this was one of the outfits I was planning on seducing Bullseye with..."

"I don't think she should be wearing something like that." You frown.

"I agree." Nungesser nods. "Maybe in another year or two!"

You just sigh and shake your head.

"Misono, you can change out of that if you want."

Misono just nods reluctantly and slides back into the relative safety of the closet.

"All right Artya, you can come out, now." You say. "Whatever you're wearing, it surely can't be any worse than what Misono has."

You see Artya's masked face poke out from the closet and shakes her head rapidly.

"It's okay, Artya, I won't judge you." You assure her. "I'll certainly be judging Nun here."

"Yeah!" Laika adds in. "Don't such a big baby like Misono!"

"H-hey!" Misono shouts in protest.

However, that finally seems to convince Artya to come out.

"A kimono?" You raise an eyebrow.

"It seemed appropriately conservative." Nungesser grins. "I have an eye for these things, you know."

"Try saying that to Misono." You grunt.

"Oh, she's just too shy to admit she likes it. Just you wait and see. Check her luggage when you get home. I'll guarantee you'll find it again." Nungesser gives a sly smile.

"In your dreams." You roll your eyes and turn back to Artya. "You look very good in that, Artya."

Artya doesn't seem to know how to react. However, your encouraging smile apparently manages to calm her down.

"Anyways, with that taken care of, we should get changed and prepare for supper!" Nungesser says happily. "Unfortunately, since Janice isn't here and Jacques is current indisposed, it looks like we'll have to prepare the food ourselves!"

Oh boy, maybe you should head to the kitchen to make sure they don't burn the place down. Then again, Kelsey might be arriving any minute, and it would be rude to not be there to greet him...

"All right, let's get dinner cooked, then."

Fortunately, your fears were largely unfounded. While your girls were relatively inexperienced in the kitchen, Nungesser was actually fairly adept. She certainly wasn't as skilled or as graceful as Janice was at cooking, but she knew her way around, grabbing all the necessary ingredients for Beef Burgundy and then instructing your girls to take care of modest tasks such as cutting vegetables and heating water while Nungesser herself did most of the heavy lifting. You suppose that was one side effect of living largely alone.

"I see I'm interrupting something." You hear a familiar voice.

"Colonel!" You blink as your commanding officer walks into the kitchen. "When did you get here?"

"Just now. Your caretaker met us on the ground and he kindly pointed me here."

"I see." You nod. "And I heard you have something to talk to me about?"

"That's right." Kelsey looks around. "I'd rather speak with you privately on this."

"In that case, just take that door over there! It leads to a small pantry we don't use often." Nungesser says helpfully.

"Thanks." You nod and follower her directions, entering a small pantry. Kelsey then enters and closes the door.

"So what's this all about, sir?" You ask.

"Well, you remember that we were running blood tests to make sure your squadron didn't have radiation poisoning, right?"

"Right." You nod, wondering where he was getting at.

"Well, the medical team testing the blood samples found a few... 'anomalies', so they performed further tests. And they found something I think you should know."

"What would that be? Why is it so important you had to relay it to me in person?" You ask.

"Because of the possible political ramifications if this became public." Kelsey leans forward closer to your ear and whispers, "Two of your witches, Janice and Nungesser.... they're both pregnant, Captain."

Little Ernestine worshipped her parents. They were Very Important People who did Very Important Things. And while they were often away, leaving her alone with just Jacques for company, they made up for it by spoiling her sweet with lovely new clothes and badly-cooked meals and bedside stories whenever they came home.

"Papa? Mama? Where are you going?"

"We have to go, my little kit."

"But you promised!” she wailed. “You promised to celebrate my birthday with me!"

"We're sorry, dearest fox. Duty calls. France calls."

"I don't care about duty or France! I want you to stay with me!"

"Don't worry, Ernestine. We will be back soon for your birthday."

"...Do you promise?" she sniffled.

"Of course we promise, my little fox, if you promise to be a good girl and wait for us."

"I promise, Papa, Mama! I'll be good! I'll wait! We'll have the best birthday ever!"

So Ernestine waited. Minutes. Hours. Days. Tired and sleepy she might be, but she was a good girl.

"Joyeux anniversaire à moi... joyeux anniversaire à moi... joyeux anniversaire, joyeux anniversaire... joyeux anniversaire à moi..."

"You may blow out the candles, Lady Ernestine."

"No. Papa and Mama promised to be home today. I’ll wait for them to come home. We’ll blow the candles out together."

The candles continued to burn well into the night, blackened wicks sinking ever so steadily into puddles of wax that spread across the untouched cake, until one by one they finally winked out, leaving a little girl in the dark, trying her best not to sob.

>>
Will we ever have a Pierce vs Frank fight again ?

>>40898441

The next day, the day after her birthday, a somber Jacques took the red-eyed Ernestine aside.

She’d never seen him so serious. Something was wrong.

“What is it, Jacques?”

"Lady Ernestine," he reluctantly said. "Your Papa and your Mama will not be coming home. They are... gone."

And her world crashed like the cruel aircraft that had taken her Papa and Mama away.

The heartbroken girl fled into the forest. There she stumbled and fell. Undeterred by the pain, she got back on her knees and tore the grass out of the ground with her small hands. All this while she cried out her little lungs, her chest hot and hurting and thumping.

"But you promised!" she shrieked at the woods so dark and foreboding. "You promised to be back home for my birthday!"

Ernestine let her exhausted form flop down on the grass, not caring for her ruined sundress.

"I was a good girl... I kept my promise..."

There Jacques the master tracker found his disheveled and dirty charge. Gathered within his strong arms and upon his chest she emptied her eyes of tears.

"I'm sorry, Ernestine," he whispered. "They wouldn't want to make you cry. They would want you to be happy. And you will be happy again."

"I don't believe you," she sobbed into his chest. "You're lying."

"I am not lying. I promise."

"You'll just break your promise." Why should she trust anyone if her own parents failed to fulfill their part of a sacred promise?

"And you shall punish me if I prove false," Jacques offered.

That… that made sense. "Yes,” she agreed, her voice growing stronger and steadier. “I, Comtesse de Nungesser, promise to punish you if you fail to uphold your bargain."

Ernestine rubbed away the last of her tears. "I am a good girl," she told herself. "I keep my promises."

Jacques was right. Time healed the gaping wound in her chest, made light the weight from her shoulders and softened her stony heart, and lifted her drooping spirits.

True, the pain returned from time to time, came back whenever she visited her parents’ empty crypt. But every single time it would eventually pass.

Far more often she remembered happier times. Of bedside stories involving spies and Witches and Good triumphing over Evil. Reading bodice rippers. Burning down the kitchen. Of catching Mama wearing utterly scandalous outfit, the extremely tight tank top and the briefest excuse of a skirt, and posing in front of a mirror.

She found happiness again. Flying through the sky. Fighting with her lance. Flirting with handsome gents and lovely belles.

Even without her gods, Ernestine's world continued to turn.

And it was all right. She would be all right.

X===X===X

"Bonjour! Welcome to Istres-Le Tubé Air Base!"

The young man who opened the door was clearly confused by jet lag and the early hours. His disheveled shirt and shorts showed quite a lot of his whipcord physique, and his homely face had an understated charm of its own.

"Uh... thanks? I'm... well, my friends call me Bullseye, and so can you?"

The predatory grin on Ernestine's face would not look askance on a fox that had gotten inside a henhouse.

"Bullseye, indeed."(4/4)

Okay, so to clarify things:

Nun is pretty simple to explain. Her psycholgical desire to have children may have convinced her to "forget" proper protection, even at the risk of sabotaging her relationship with Bullseye.
