You are Kusajishi Riku, Captain of the Ninth Division of the Seireitei Court Guard, and this is your afterlife.

It began in 1802, when you awakened somewhere in the slums of the Kusajishi district with no memories, no home, and no name. All you had were the tattered rags on your back and the name they gave you there. In 1816 a shinigami Captain noticed your speed and spiritual potential: Shihōin Yoruichi offered you a place in her Stealth Force, where you would have a life off the streets for the first time in your short memory.

Her life and your own have been entwined since you were alive, and still going by the name Rosa Rosette. During the last great war between the shinigami and the Quincy, a clan of spiritually-aware humans, it was Yoruichi who took Rosa's life in an attack that left a scar on your back even after death. When she learned that you were once the enemy she killed, your Captain admitted to having carried a deep sense of doubt and guilt regarding the act through the intervening years. You proved willing to forgive her for this, drawing a mental line between your past life and your present one across which you would carry no grudges.

Under the watchful eyes of Yoruichi and her close confidant Urahara Kisuke, your growth rate was explosive. The first books you read after learning how to do so were about offensive and defensive kidō spells. All the basics and some advanced techniques of hakuda were beaten into your very bones, and you even learned the name of your zanpakuto Tenkotsuki before being catapulted to the Lieutenant position in Yoruichi's Division.

You honed your swordsmanship on the streets of Kyoto, learning from the Ishin Shishi and Shinsengumi, and wear a pale blue sash to remember those men and their battles by. You met powerful hollows who turned out to be decent people, and you later helped several of them gain shinigami powers by secretly presenting them with blank zanpakuto. These arrancar include Coyote Starrk and Lilynette, siblings of the mythical Coyote, as well as the former Vasto Lorde Tia Halibel and her companions Apacci, Mila Rose, and Sun-Sung. You're proud to have gained their friendship over the years.

There were so many wonderful moments in those days. You took in two orphans from the Rukongai, Gin and Rangiku, becoming something akin to a mother figure for them. You also noticed as Yoruichi's teasing and flirting took on a more serious tone, which initially left you confused. But gradually, you came to accept and even return those sentiments in your own subtle ways.

Then things changed.

Ten shinigami disappeared under suspicious circumstances, leading to the eventual hollowfication of several Captains and Lieutenants at the hands of Aizen Sōsuke. That night, after visiting Hueco Mundo without permission to ask if a hollow could have been responsible for the disappearances, you yourself were accidentally exposed to the same contaminant that infected those officers.

While trying to warn your Captain about the threat, you were taken inside your own mind where you fought a manifestation of “Rosa Rosette”: the memories, hatred, and regret from your former life which had been cast off after your death and left to rot. Thanks perhaps to your degree of self-understanding it was a difficult fight, but one which eventually saw you defeat and subdue Rosa... though not before your unconscious body managed to infect Yoruichi.

Had it not been for her relatively short bout inside her mind and your powerful skills with bakudō, you may well have been killed.

Matters only grew more complicated from there. You replaced Muguruma Kensei as Captain of the Ninth Division, appointed Rangiku as your Lieutenant, and filled the empty seats of the Commandos with fighters who are all near or at Lieutenant level. Soon you guided your new unit through two years on the Western front killing hollows, which demonstrated their skills and put to rest any doubts they may have had about you. Then came the disastrous “Spanish Flu” epidemic, followed by the Great Kanto Earhtquake.

Now you're on your way back to the Seireitei with Lord Kuchiki, Byakuya, and Kenpachi with rebel shinigami in tow as prisoners.

“They're avoidin' us,” your Third Seat Kai observes as Rukongai residents scramble to get out of your way. Many actually go so far as to kowtow as you pass by... you're still not sure you'll ever get used to that. You're also not sure how to feel as Byakuya's eyes seem to linger on a pale girl with dark hair in the crowd. She's pretty in the same way a cut flower is: nice to look at, but you can tell she's living on borrowed time.

For now, you merely shrug and continue along your way. “It's easier for everyone involved.”

To one side, you spy a scrappy-looking boy who looks to be a fair bit younger than Byakuya in the crowd. He's the only one who remains unbowed, and his cheek bears a familiar tattoo...

You stop and reach towards your left side, prompting a chorus of shocked gasps as your hand brushes the hilt of your sword. It's followed by innumerable sighs of relief as your fingertips grasp the kogai mounted at the throat of Tenkotsuki's sheath and draw it, using the skewer-like tool to arrange a few errant strands of your hair. If you're going to talk to someone for the first time, be sure you're ready to make a good impression: Tenkotsuki and Yoruichi have each told you something to that effect.

“Ill catch up,” you tell Kai as you return the kogai to its slot in Tenkotsuki's sheath. “I take it you can go on for a few minutes without me?”

Your third in command chuckles softly. “Sure, just try not ta scare anyone ta death, right?”

“No promises,” you grumble, eying the civilians carefully. You were never this cowardly when you lived in the Rukongai, though you didn't used to have a livelihood to protect either. There'd have been no point to cowardice.

The crowd parts as you pass, mostly staying bowed even as they move out of the way, until you reach the boy. The tattoo on his face is a “69”, just like the one Kensei had on his chest. You can also tell immediately that the kid has pretty good reiatsu for someone of his age and utter lack of training.

“You're not bowing,” you observe flatly.

He quickly dips his head and shoulders, as if suddenly remembering his manners. “Apologies, ma'am.”

“Who told you to bow?” you ask, allowing yourself a grin.

“Well,” the boy mumbles in confusion, raising his eyes but keeping his posture low, “you're a Captain, right? Am I not supposed to be bowing?”

“I dunno,” you shrug. “Bow if you wanna, I don't really care. Captain Kusajishi, Ninth Division... that's an interesting tattoo you've got, boy.”

“Ninth Division?” he asks timidly. “Uh, ma'am? Isn't that Captain Muguruma's Division?”

“Ah, so I was right,” you sigh. “Look, kid. Captain Muguruma had to leave, and I was promoted to take his place. It happens from time to time.”

“So, you mean he's dead, right?” the boy mutters dejectedly.

>That's absolutely not what I meant, dumbass. He got exiled for bullshit political reasons.
>There was an incident. He's alive, just not in the Soul Society anymore.

“Listen, kid,” you tell the boy in a reassuring voice, leaning in carefully. He looks up expectantly.

Then you flick him across the nose, hard enough to knock him flat on his ass.

“What the hell!?” the messy-haired boy demands loudly through his tears. “That hurt!”

“Don't expect other people to do your thinking for you!” you exclaim. “If you wanna know the truth, figure it out for yourself! Become a shinigami, see things with your own eyes, and make your own conclusions!”

“You didn't have to hit me...” the boy grumbles, rubbing the bridge of his nose.

“You have some potential,” you continue, stubbornly ignoring the boy's protests. “What's your name?”

“Shūhei,” he replies.

“I look forward to seeing what you do with that potential, Shūhei,” you tell him before turning to catch up to your group. As you turn, though, you feel like your narrow-cut haori billows just a bit more dramatically than usual.

Using hirenkyaku it only takes a single step to return to your Commandos, who don't even bat an eye at your sudden appearance.

“So what was that about, ma'am?” Iba asks.

“Inspiring the next generation,” you tell him somewhat cryptically.

“Where to now?” Ginrei mutters as he joins you. “I assume you have a plan for these prisoners?”

>Take them to Yoruichi first. We'll interrogate them and figure out how to process them from there.

“Yoruichi and I can interrogate the two cooperative ones,” you begin to think aloud. “The others should probably be held at the Ninth Division's prison until we figure out where they should be held permanently.”

Ginrei nods thoughtfully. “Very well, then. Shall we divide the troops?”

“I'm goin' back to take a nap,” Zaraki sighs as he too catches up with the head of the column. “Ya don't really need me anymore, and it's just gonna get more boring from here.”

That makes sense. Zaraki tends to start picking fights when he gets bored, so better that he does that somewhere else for now. “I think the Head Captain wanted to see you at some point,” you reply. “But yeah, do whatever you want. We'll handle the parts that require thinking.”

The Eleventh Kenpachi shrugs at the thinly veiled insult. “Suits me just fine.”

It only takes another couple of hours to reach the Ninth Division's barracks and drop off the prisoners. You leave Ichinose and Kai in charge of processing them, and you send Iba to report to the Head Captain. Last, you send Mirai to the Fourth Division to start the process of checking the prisoners' health.

From there it isn't long before you reach the Second Division barracks with Rangiku and the two prisoners who seemed willing to talk before. The members of the punishment force bow respectfully as you pass until you reach the threshold beyond which the senior barracks are located, at which point you remove your shoes and help the captives remove their sandals.

“It would be easier if you'd uncuff us,” the young man smirks.

You shake your head. “You know as well as I do that's not how this works.”

“So, seems your mission was successful?” Yoruichi greets you casually from her throne-like seat, motioning for two shadowy figures to provide seats for yourself and Rangiku. One of the shadows turns out to be Suí Fēng, whose stiff posture stands in such stark contrast to her increasingly relaxed nature outside of formal settings. You figure that has something to do with how much time she's been spending with Yūshirō, who seems to bring out her more childish side.

You bow ever so slightly, aware that there are others here who expect such formalities. “Was there any doubt?”

“Not really. So who are you two?”

The young woman bows deeply, and the man gives his name. “Seventh Seat Nozaki, Fifth Division.”

“Fifth Division?” You and Yoruichi exchange a knowing glance.

“What, did you not like Aizen's tea?” you mutter.

Nozaki shakes his head. “No, I have no issues with our new Captain... it's our new Lieutenant I that's the problem.”

“Who, Lieutenant Ichimaru?” Rangiku interrupts. “What do you think he did?”

“I know that it's unlikely Captain Urahara was involved in Captain Muguruma's disappearance,” Nozaki continues. “I saw the man myself heading for the Head Captain's office before the rescue team was deployed... seems he'd have to be faster than either of you or in two places at once to manage that.”

“Go on,” Yoruichi presses. You have to admit that while Nozaki's trust in Aizen is deeply misplaced, he may actually be onto something. “So what makes you suspect Ichimaru?”

“He was the only officer unaccounted for at the time,” Nozaki explains. “Our barracks compound has two gates in and out, and it's Division policy to log who goes out and who comes in, and when. Ichimaru never logged out, but he did log back in late that night.”

"That's why we separated from the Gotei 13," the young woman adds. "Nozaki convinced a few of us that the Central 46 must either be grossly incompetent, or covering something up about our former Captain's end."

So they really think Gin just got careless? That's not like the boy you raised at all. He simply doesn't make mistakes, especially not careless ones like failing to follow simple procedure like that. Rangiku seems to be thinking so as well: that their story just doesn't add up somehow. Either the prisoners aren't telling you the truth, or just as likely they're telling you the truth that Gin wants them to tell you.

“So what were you planning to do after leaving your Division?” you ask them, setting aside your doubts over their story for the time being. “Don't tell me you were trying to muster enough Rukongai residents to serve as a deterrent?”

The woman gulps. “Well... Nozaki?”

“Sort of,” the man admits. “That was sort of the plan.”

Yoruichi sighs heavily. “That's stupid. For deterrence to work you'd have to present an actual threat, and you're nowhere close.”

“I saw that,” Nozaki replies. “And really I never expected it to be that simple, which was why we set up this trap.”

You cock an eyebrow at the man. “A trap?”

“For you, Captain Kusajishi,” he confirms. “We figured that if Ichimaru was involved in the incident that killed our Captain the woman who raised him was probably just as responsible.”

That's not widely known information outside of your closest circle of friends, with some of the Captains being an exception. Yoruichi beats you to the follow-up question.

“Who told you that?” she glares.

Nozaki turns to face you nervously, avoiding Yoruichi's eyes. “Captain Aizen.”

No doubt because he wanted them to attack you, you figure. That seems like the sort of strategy he'd pursue, though he can't have expected it to really accomplish much...

… ah, you get it now. The point wasn't to have them kill you, or even weaken you. The point was to have you kill them and silence their inquiries into the Hollowfication Incident, and now that you've captured them you have no idea what Aizen will do next.

The look on Yoruichi's face tells you she shares some of your concerns. “I see. And have you anything further to say in your defense?”

“Only that we did what we thought we had to,” Nozaki declares. “Even if we may have misjudged you, I can stand by our decision to leave an organization too corrupt and complacent to be saved.”

“They're all yours, Yoruichi,” you sigh. She inclines her head, silently telling you that she understands exactly why you'd rather pursue this arrangement over keeping the prisoners in your own facility. “I'd like a word though.”

The two shinigami stare at you in confusion. “What is it?” the woman asks.

You shut your eyes, carefully contemplating your words. “The Aizen you seem to trust is an illusion, the combination of what you want to see in the man and the image he presents to you. It's my belief he's the one behind what happened to Shinji and the others... so be careful.”

Nozaki snorts derisively. “You really think Captain Aizen is that dangerous?”

“On the contrary,” you counter him darkly,” all Captains are dangerous. I simply realized long ago that Aizen isn't the exception he seems to be.”

The prisoners are whisked away silently at Suí Fēng's direction before either one can manage a reply to your warning, but you get the impression that it caught their attention. You can only hope nothing comes of it.

“So what are you planning to do now?” Yoruichi asks, settling into her chair. “You seem like you need a break.”

“I was thinking we could harass Byakuya together,” you shrug. “Seems to be how you pass the time, teasing people to death.”

Yoruichi grins back at you. “It'll be like a family outing!”

“Aww, do we have to?” Rangiku moans. “Byakuya's too damn serious to be any fun, I really prefer teasing guys like Isshin who don't get all bent out of shape over it.”

You can't help but grin at her, sensing an opportunity. “Wow, and here I thought you went in for the quite, thoughtful ones. Gin'll be so disappointed!”

Your daughter scoffs. “Isshin might be more my type if he'd ever look me in the eyes.”

“Am I gonna have to protect my darling daughter's honor again?”

The ribbing continues the whole way to the Kuchiki manor, until finally Yoruichi bumps against an unsuspecting Byakuya's head, her chest cushioning the already modest impact. It's impressive that Byakuya doesn't seem surprised at all, merely annoyed.

“To what do I owe this displeasure?” he growls.

Yoruichi is undeterred as always. “Oh, just checking in on my favorite pupil's progress! Thought maybe we could play another game of tag?”

"I refuse."

"Lame."

“Don't you ever relax?” you sigh at Byakuya as he steps away from Yoruichi's cleavage. Good boy... if he'd lingered much longer you'd have had to have words. “I''m sure Isshin and Shunsui could show you how if it's a confusing concept.”

Byakuya stares at you in surprise. “You noticed them? Even when they're letting out so little reiatsu?”

Yoruichi laughs heartily. “Don't look so shocked, little Byakuya. Of course Captains like us can sense reiatsu better than you can... the third one is Kūkaku, by the way.”

You nod. “Thanks, I've never paid attention to hers before, so I didn't recognize it at all.”

“So what are they here for, to arrange a wedding or something?” you ask.

“Why would you ask that?” Byakuya replies in confusion.

“Don't lie,” you taunt him. “I saw the way you were looking at that young woman in the crowd... like a puppy having his tummy rubbed!”

Yoruichi cocks an eyebrow at you. “Oh, so little Byakuya's finding out about forbidden love? How delightfully scandalous!”

“That's not true at all!” Byakuya insists hotly, though nobody's buying it.

“Methinks the boy doth protest too much,” Rangiku muses, hiding her massive grin behind a hand.

Even Tenkotsuki weighs in inside your mind. “What a positively adorable reaction! I can see why Miss Yoruichi enjoys this so much!”

If you have something with an Area effect that affect the petals individually regardless of how many are mashed together, such as increasing gravity for example, the attack is fucked.

For a moment it seems like Byakuya has merely paused mid-sentence for some reason, but it gradually becomes clear to you that something unusual has just happened. The boy's mouth hangs open and motionless, while Yoruichi and Rangiku stand and listen to him as if nothing at all is wrong with the world around you. It seems that only you are aware that time seems to have come to a halt.

“Tenkotsuki, what is this?” you ask in a low voice, testing out your limbs. You feel fine, as if whatever is affecting your companions has no effect on you whatsoever.

There's a brief pause as Tenkotsuki's reiatsu flares several times. “I am not sure. It seems I too have escaped whatever has stopped time around us. Be on your guard, my dear Riku. Something is not right.”

It's then that you hear it.

The tiny sound of frantically beating wings approaches you from above, and a small bird with iridescent green feathers descends into view. It flits back and forth, its wings a blur of motion even to your eyes, and it ponders you with what seems to be the spark of intellect behind its beady black eyes.

“You,” you greet the bird gruffly. “I take it you're responsible for this, hummingbird?”

The tiny animal zooms around you once, bobbing and weaving as it goes, before coming to a stop in front of you again where it hovers. Its bill slashes through the air as its head twitches back and forth, clearly examining you further.

Tenkotsuki chimes in. “I do not think it can speak, Riku.”

The bird then hovers closer to you, advancing an arm's length or so at a time between short dashes, before landing on an outstretched finger.

“Why are you here, hummingbird?” you press despite not knowing whether it can respond or not. “Who sent you?”

Without warning the bird's tiny, needle-like bill stabs the back of your hand, just hard enough to draw blood, before it zips straight back up into the sky. The stinging subsides as an image in colorful ink seems to scrawl across your left arm of its own accord, before the ink fades away leaving your skin as smooth as ever.

“The hell was that?” you ask in growing alarm.

Tenkotsuki ponders for a moment. “Ancient magic, very powerful but quite limited in scope.”

“And that means?”

“I believe it was meant as an amulet for travelers,” Tenkotsuki muses. “It seems someone in the realm of the Great Spirit would not mind seeing you return in the future, and wishes to avoid a similar incident to the one with Thunderbird.”

“That's... good, right?” you ask, uncertain of the motive behind such action.

Tenkotsuki seems indifferent. “Only if you end up returning there at some point. Otherwise, it's merely a form of acknowledgement.”

“Could've sent someone more talkative,” you grumble mutinously. “Coyote, you dog.”

“Why is the effect not ending...” Tenkotsuki muses quietly in your mind. “If Hummingbird is gone and time is still stopped, that could only mean one thing.”

“Hello, Amatsu-Mikaboshi,” she greets nobody in particular as a painfully bright light fills your eyes. You suddenly find yourself within your own mental realm, standing a pace behind Tenkotsuki as you stare at a shadowy figure in the rough shape of a man.

A gravelly, stern voice responds to her in turn. Its words are polite, but its tone is filled with a hidden disdain that permeates every syllable. “It has been many years.”

“State your business,” Tenkotsuki snaps, far more visibly angry than you're accustomed to seeing her, “then go. And do not forget that you are here at my leisure.”

The shifting, amorphous figure laughs, or rather you think it's probably a laugh. “My, your courtesy has lessened of late, Tamamo-no-Mae.”

Wait, did he just say what you though he said? Casting a sidelong glance allows you to see the furious look on Tenkotsuki's face, which is all the response you need to tell you that Amatsu-Mikaboshi's words are probably true. But why would she hide something like this from you for so long?

“And I see your personality is no less intolerable than when I left,” she growls, taking a seat underneath the cherry tree. “But enough pleasantries. Speak before I remove you from my presence by force.”

“There was another god here, Tamamo-no-Mae,” the shifting mass of darkness explains, “one which I did not recognize. Who might it have been?”

Tenkotsuki shrugs the question off. “It was Hummingbird, if you really need to know. He marked my dear Riku with a rune that will allow her to travel freely in the realm of the Great Spirit... a great and prestigious gift, to those who understand its significance.”

“I see. As for this girl, what is your relationship to her?”

“I have a name,” you scowl. “Since you're inside my head, it's only polite that you use it.”

“I am not exactly inclined to chat with you or any other god,” Tenkotsuki continues to growl after your outburst. “Do not feign ignorance as to the reason, you know as well as I do that Miura-no-suke shot me down with a seki-stone arrowhead.”

“That is why I chose to hide this from you for so long, my dear Riku,” Tenkotsuki explains, turning to face you for the first time rather than addressing the god that has invaded your mental space. “No human could have procured such a weapon on their own, which means that another lesser deity had to have deliberately armed the hunter Miura-no-suke, who killed me, as such.”

“I did not wish to burden you with such knowledge,” she concludes warily. “And perhaps I did not wish to confront that fact myself. But there it stands.”

“And do you truly believe that I am personally responsible for your death?” Amatsu-Mikaboshi laughs cruelly. “You brought it on yourself, regardless of who the supplier of the weapon happened to be. You should have known better.”

“I am through exchanging words with you,” Tenkotsuki snarls. “Get out, and take a warning to the others: the next one of you who intrudes in my wielder's head will have their own offered to her as an apology.”

Zanpakuto or god, you can't be sure what Tenkotsuki is anymore. But the murderous look in her eyes is enough to silence the uninvited guest. “Be gone.”
(1/2)
>>
>>40869181
>>40869165
There are three versions of the myth. One where she was killed and became a ghost that huanted a stone killing everyone that came near it. One where the dude who killed her killed himself later. And one where she tricked the dude into believing that he killed her and after he killed himself she cursed him to become hoji. My bet is that the third is the true one in this case.
>>
>>40869178
Pretty much but even more invasive? Even though the Old Man lied about being a zanpakuto spirit, he still wasn't literally Yhwach's astral projection but was instead the manifestation of a different part of Ichigo I'm pretty sure.

Whereas Tenkotsuki is some youkai who's been squatting in our soul and gave us amnesia so she'd have a more comfortable nest.

After Amatsu-Mikaboshi disappears, Tenkotsuki lets loose a scream of frustration and slams her fist into the ground, opening huge fissures in the cliff face and sending giant chunks of volcanic rock tumbling into the sea far below.

"I am deeply sorry for this," she mutters, collapsing once more under her tree. "Truly, I am. I had hoped it would take longer for the other gods to learn of my presence here, that by then you would have fully mastered our Bankai."

"I was naive. That has ever been my undoing."

Even "Rosa" seems to have come out of whatever corner of your mind she usually skulks in to see what all the commotion is about.

Dude, on top of Aizen now we might have to deal with the Shinto Pantheon picking fights with us, and the being who is supposed to be a reflection of ourselves (Nimaiya Ouetsu's ultimate lesson is "the sword is you") is instead something straight out of folklore. Enough is enough. This isn't even about being mean, this is more that we'd be fucked if Amatsu Mikaboshi really wanted to start shit, so waiting for her until she's ready just isn't valid.
>>
>>40869393
“Are you really my zanpakuto?” Your question is as earnest as it is simple, and it's honestly been a long time in coming.

“Very well, I think it is about time,” Tenkotsuki sighs. “I was once a nine-tailed kitsune, considered a goddess in my own right. You no doubt know of my death already, but I also spent many decades trapped in the Dangai after being cleansed from the Sessho-seki, drifting aimlessly. That is where I found the soul of Rosa Rosette, in the process of tearing herself apart from guilt and rage but unable to hollowfy due to what she was.

“Many souls had made desperate offers before for my help, but most were too focused on material wealth, or promises of power or authority. I rarely took them seriously, but Rosa was different. She made me an offer in exchange for easing her passage, at the cost of the one thing most precious to any of her clan.”

“Pride,” Rosa mutters, taking a seat nearby. For once she seems not aggressive, but rather tired. “We offered her our pride, the most sacred and valuable thing a quincy can possess.”

“Precisely,” Tenkotsuki nods. “It was the offer of that sacred intangible that convinced me I was dealing with a different sort of person altogether. I separated the parts of her soul that were in conflict, and took the place of Rosa Rosette's pride in order to hold the whole arrangement together, thus holding up my end of the bargain.”

“And that's how you ended up reflected in my zanpakuto,” you conclude quietly, now understanding the truth behind what your zanpakuto has always told you.
(1/2)
>>
>>40869964
Yes because trusting someone who lied several times too you is SUUUCH a good idea, And who also seperated your soul for other reasons probably, OH and who more than likely wiped your memory!
>>
>>40870005
Tenkotsuki gives you a tired smile. “In life I was Tamamo-no-Mae, who was killed due to her own youthful foolishness. In death I was known as Hōji, the vengeful spirit of a dead goddess haunting the living world. In my new life, I have found myself in the unexpected role of your Zanpakuto, Tenkotsuki. That is the existence I would choose for myself, if you would permit it.”

"Additionally, how likely would it be to have any more deities in hiding? What's the extent of their their influence, both in Soul Society and the mortal realm?"

I'd imagine it'd be best to keep matters like this from overlapping with Soul Society or mortal realm business.
Similar with how the SS keeping their's and Hueco Mundo's influence minimal with the mortal world.

“You and that jackass both said something about foolishness,” you observe. “What did you mean?”

Tenkotsuki shuts her eyes briefly as she summarizes her story. “I grew bored of the Soul Society and the company of other gods, and left for the Imperial court. I felt as though the change of scenery would prove inspiring, but instead my very presence proved poisonous to the Emperor. It was the notion that I could have anything approaching a normal life that was foolish.”

“And our Bankai?” you press. “I take it there's something more to it than what you've told me.”

“Not at all, my dear,” Tenkotsuki laughs softly. “I told you it contains a portion of my power. That was the full truth. When left to rampage uncontrolled it destabilizes and crushes any other reiatsu that manifests within a certain range. That is all there is to it.”

That makes sense. It explains how the limiter caused your Bankai to only partially affect Thunderbird, since it only had one fifth of its usual power. It also explains why nobody around you can sense reiatsu when you use it: because it simply overwhelms that sixth sense in most people who have it.

She told you as much up front, you just never thought about it.

“You have never seen yourself when you use it,” Tenkotsuki continues, “but you also gain a number of ghostly 'tails' in accordance with your own power in Bankai. As you grow stronger you may cast low-level kidō despite my Bankai's effects. It is because over centuries you have gained enough skill to draw on some of that crushing reiatsu.”

“I will teach you more next time you fight, but know for now that you currently possess three such tails.”

“Rosa, what do you think?” you ask.

Your doppelganger shrugs. “You already know what I'd normally say, right?”

“Fuck the vixen, use my skills?”

She nods. “Sounds about right.”

“That's all you have to say?” you press.

“Nothing I say will change what happened,” Rosa tells you through gritted teeth. “I've come to accept that, just like I've come to accept that you're a stupid bitch who's far too forgiving.”

“I'll forgive you for that,” you smirk. To your surprise, Rosa merely pushes the hair from her eyes and smirks right back at you.

“I know. Don't get too complacent Riku, or I'll have to take the reigns instead.”

You shake your head. “See, it's that attitude that's kept us apart so long.”

And then, just as suddenly as this whole mess began, you find yourself back outside your mind.

“... you, Captain Kusajishi,” Byakuya continues as if nothing ever happened.

“You okay, Riku?” Rangiku asks, noticing you waver on your feet for a moment. Yoruichi notices it as well, and there's a look of concern in her eyes.

“You remember when I went to Colorado?” you ask. “Sort of like that. I'll explain later.”

Byakuya clearly doesn't get it, but Rangiku and Yoruichi exchange a nervous glance.

“So!” Yoruichi exclaims, trying to move the discussion along. “What exactly are they saying about Riku?”

“As if I would tell you,” Byakuya replies. His expression is neutral, but you can hear the sneer in his voice.

Yoruichi shakes her head solemnly. “It's like you don't understand, little Byakuya. You can't tease me like that, telling me they're talking about my Riku but not telling me any of the details.”

“Surely you can think of a few topics they could be discussing?” Byakuya shakes his head. “I thought you were cleverer than that.”

“Oh, I am,” Yoruichi replies, circling the younger noble like a tigress circling her future meal. “I'm just not exactly patient, little Byakuya.”

With a single motion Yoruichi steps past Byakuya and grabs the ribbon from his long black hair.

“You can have this back if you tell us everything you know,” she tells him in a deceptively playful tone.

“Don't underestimate me,” Byakuya insists. “I won't rise to such bait.”

“Oh?” Yoruichi replies with a smirk.

You shake your head. “You can't back down now, young man. Just remember this was the future you chose.”

Suddenly Byakuya's sash is gone, and Senbonzakura clatters to the ground.

“Look what we've got here!” Yoruichi calls from atop a nearby wall. “Give up?”

“I refuse.”

The next exchange is even faster. Byakuya dives for his sword and unsheaths it in a practiced, fluid, and unfortunately predictable motion. Yoruichi merely flash-steps next to him and wraps Senbonzakura's blade with the boy's own obi, preventing him from releasing it as something pulls him off his feet.

As Yoruichi yanks the sword away from him, Byakuya spies the hilt of Rangiku's sword. Too late to notice her releasing Haineko and laying its ash along the ground like a rug for her to pull out from under his feet, though.

He gets up, but finds Yoruichi tugging on his sleeve. She spins him around, and with fast hands unfastens his black kosode.

"My, you're still as skinny as ever!" Yoruichi exclaims. "Tell me what I want to know or the hakama come off next."

That's a serious threat, and you get the feeling that Yoruichi's ultimate intent is to make Byakuya retrieve them himself. To be seen like that would be the ultimate indignity, and the young Kuchiki knows it.

“If he had anything to tell us he'd have done it,” you observe. “I think we'll have to just let ourselves in and ask for ourselves.”

Yoruichi nods gently, handing off the clothing to a sheepish Byakuya. “Next time remember it's refusing to admit when you're beaten that's shameful, not knowing when to back down and doing so.”

“You make up half this shit as you go, don't you?” you ask as the three of you leave Byakuya to re-dress himself.

With a laugh, Yoruichi admits that it's probably more than half.

The parlor room where Ginrei has met his guests falls silent as you enter. Rangiku bows respectfully, though Yoruichi realizes that for her to do so is pointless. She's in the company of peers and friends, and the situation is clearly casual rather than formal.

“I see we failed to keep you from discovering this little meeting,” Lord Ginrei greets you. “You finished with the prisoners much sooner than anticipated.”

“We did,” you nod. “So what's with the secrecy?”

Captain Kyōraku coughs into his hand, and the Shibas glance at one another.

“Well there's no easy way to fess up,” Shunsui begins, “so I'm going to let Isshin explain.”

“So it's like this,” Isshin begins, gesturing vaguely with his hands. “Nobility's about more than a name, right? Or at least that's how it's supposed to be, but not how it is... I mean, most of us are perfectly fine! Miss Yoruichi's great, even!”

“We're not engaged anymore Isshin,” Yoruichi sighs. “You can cut the bullshit.”

“I know,” he relents, “sorry. Takes a while to shake old habits, you know? But anyway, we were talking about it, and we've agreed... well we agreed to ask you, that is...”
(1/2)
>>
>>40872528
Finally Kūkaku seems to lose what little of her patience was left to start with, and nearly brains Isshin with her good arm. “What Captain Classy and Captain Confidence were tryin' to say is Ginrei thinks it's a good idea if one or the other of our families offers to adopt you. To make you a noble, though not one that's gonna inherit a Clan.”

Didn't the Fengs and Omaedas start out as bodyguard families for the Shihouins until they got elevated to Nobility status? Is this gonna be the same sort of deal?

And I agree with this sentiment >>40872652
>I'm still keeping my name of Kusajishi....No you can't talk me out of it

You don't wanna force him to call us Onee-chan?

No, It's a matter of pride damn you!

Does this mean I can make little bee call me big sister?

I'd rather force little bee to do that.

And people once again so that they fail at reading. There is no feng here talking about doing that.
>>40872780
No one from that clan is here talking about adopting riku.
>>
>>40872568
But then everyone else from Rukangai will only have Kenpachi to aspire to. Do we really want that?
>>
>>40872815
Yes. If our relationship ever comes out people are less likely to bitch about it. Also you are forgetting Rangiku and gin.

>To make you a noble, though not one that's gonna inherit a Clan.
Not gonna inherit anything of theirs in the first place, so what's wrong with keeping the Kusajishi name?
That name's (whether it be Shiba, Kuchiki, Shihouin, Feng, or Omaeda) for the legacy of true heirs of that particular noble's clan.
>>
>>40872977
But anon, Kenpachi Zaraki!

The Kenpachi from the district of Zaraki.

Zaraki's Kenpachi.

It's probably the same dude how was ranting about how Tenkotsuki was lying to us the whole time even through there was flat out proof she wasn't in the form of the archive. Cause he's saying they plan to use us as a political tool without any proof.
>>
>>40872568
“Oh,” you offer a tiny exclamation. “That's very nice of you.”

It takes several seconds for the meaning behind Kūkaku's words to fully register, during which you're favored with a series of amused grins.

“Yoruichi. Explain to me what just happened.”

“Well,” Yoruichi begins to explain, trying and failing to suppress a grin of her own. “It would be a mixed blessing. Many lesser nobles wouldn't like it, but it'd put you in a good position to deal with more important families and with the Central 46. It'll also give you a greater degree of personal freedom... you could even marry into one of the great Clans, with the right name.”

“Kyōraku or Shiba would both do equally well.”

Marry into nobility, huh? You suppose you can see the benefits to that... it would certainly make your situation simpler.

“It was the same way with my wife,” Ginrei reminisces fondly. “A Lieutenant of common birth... I arranged for Shunsui's grandfather to adopt her into their family to give the marriage legitimacy.”

“Why now?” you ask, though you suspect given the way Ginrei looks at you and Yoruichi that you know what his answer would be.

It's Shunsui who steps up, apparently oblivious to the true intent of the offer Ginrei has arranged. “It's like this, we noble families like to recognize certain accomplishments. Dealing with the Great Spirit and the Valhallans gives you more right to a noble name than most nobles who are born with the dumb things.”

>Can I keep my own last name? It's a reminder of who I am.
>I accept, assuming this is all for real. Whichever family.
>Kyōraku Riku has a nice ring to it.
>Shiba Riku, huh? Would that make me Kaoru's sister?
>Other?

This will be the last vote of the session.

If we do get adopted, then each family likely has its own traditions etc we'll need to learn. The Shibas seem fairly relaxed.

I chose the option because it's what we promised. We did promise to look out for Byakuya, and what better way to do that than become his adoptive sister? It'd let us be protective without being weird... Weirder.
>>
>>40873267
They're too busy hoping for SoL stuff to think about the actual gravity of the situation and her position in it.
>>
The Kuchikis are not on offer because Ginrei isn't the only member of the family with a say in things, and the rest of his family are somewhat opposed to the notion of adopting commoners. He'd do it, but it would cause all sorts of problems that getting the Shibas or Kyōrakus to do it.

I will allow voters who voted for Kuchiki to change their votes rather than drop that on you in the next update.

"Mind giving an overview of what the major accomplishments of the lesser nobles were, and what entitlements they received? I'd like to see how much my own merits measure up, so that they won't think I'm being curry favored too much by the great Clans."

Two families come forwards and offer to adopt you.

You say, "Nah that's cool and all but I'd rather have someone else."

In an orphanage that's a massive slap in the face.

In a political situation where we're being offered the chance to move up in station... it's a slap in the face.

“Well, you know more about the noble families than I do,” you admit to all four of the assembled nobles. “Which one seems like a fit?”

Shunsui ponders that point while Isshin shrugs. “The Shibas have always had a role in diplomacy. Your stunts during the war seem to fit into that.”

Ginrei nods in agreement. “I would tend to agree.”

“My family can be a bit...” Shunsui winces as he struggles to find an acceptable word. “Hard-assed. I can tell they'd get fed up with you pretty quick, so Isshin's probably right.”

“After all, there's a reason I don't spend that much time with them.”

Isshin turns to face his cousin. “So, you think this is fine?”

Kūkaku nods in agreement. “If Yoruichi likes her, she's alright in my book.”

That seems to settle it... except for one detail.

“So, does this mean there'll be three Captain Shibas?”

Isshin frowns. “If you ask me the name you've kept for over a century's too important to just strip away. If you want we can work the Shiba part in, maybe use an “of the” somewhere.”

You bow slightly in thanks. "So this means I get to be Kaoru's big sister?"

"Guess so," Isshin grins. "She'll be happy."

After a long day, full of revelations and surprises, you're more than ready to get some rest. The specifics of your new name can be worked out later, but what's important now is the future it's opened up to you. As the moon rises you find yourself offering silent gratitude towards Kuchiki Ginrei for that opportunity, before Yoruichi's soft snores send you drifting off to sleep.

And on that note, it's time to wrap things up. Thanks for coming back!

From here it's a new game. Plots and politics abound as multiple parties push their own agendas, and Riku's adoption and the revelation of Tenkotsuki's former identity place her right in the thick of it.

Keep an eye on Twitter for news on when I'll be back, and see you then!

Well, we have the major relevation of Tenko out of the way now.

No wonder her bankai is broken, it is unlocking a God level power through an already very strong shinigami.

Also explains why Coyote was so polite. He knew what Tenko was, greeted her as such and said no more.

Other then getting Riku high. So very very high.

I'm making some changes to how I have it organized, should be available tomorrow.

In fact if I don't get around to any questions here, I have an ask.fm under the same name as my Twitter. So while I may not be back from getting a meal in time to get to a question that comes up, feel free to ask there.

I hope with all that going along, we don't forget about Aizen.

Becuase... I don't think he's gonna forget about us. Also the idea of him being in the same region as the Kami makes me nervous.

>same region as the Kami
There are different grades of Kami, Aizen would only be a fucking minor one though.
Japanese gods are bloody brutal
>>
>>40874103
By region I meant the idea of the Kami hanging around the Soul Society. Even if Aizen's current level of bullshit power isn't enough against the gods, he can still plan. And talk. And serve tea.

So wait, we're Ichigo's Aunt now, aren't we?

He might be salvageable this go-round, seeing as we mostly did right by Gin.
