In the darkness, a sudden light appears. It is alone, but not. Knowing only itself, such concepts are beyond it and so it merely exists. A soft light shines out into the void, careless of what it might illuminate.

Suddenly, another light appears. Then another, and yet another, and then many more and the darkness is receding washed away by their existence. With the appearance of "others", suddenly the single spark that started it realizes that IT IS.

The other sparks swirl around it, and as it reaches out to them, they reach back in turn and suddenly there are no other lights only ITSELF and the darkness that surrounded it, which is filling with light as soon as the spark notices it.

In an eternity of this and yet as if it had already happened before the spark had even reached out the light was everywhere and beginning to take on shape . . .

You find yourself in a field of bones, stretched as far as the eye can see. Above you is nothing, not darkness or light but simply a block that your mind refuses to acknowledge resulting in your vision being drawn back to the field before you.

There is no sound, yet a sensation similar to it seems to come and descend upon you. It implies that you have been chosen, that you will serve, and that you will come BACK, COME BACK, COME BACK AND BE BOUND.

Another field greets your sight. This one has bones on it, sticking out from ragged flesh. Bodies lie haphazardly, yours apparently among them judging from the angle. A circle clear of, well, apparently anything at all lies just to your right - an emptiness that reminds you of the plains of Bone and the void that lay above it.

You roll your head around, trying to take it in just what you are when you suddenly notice that you are unable to blink.

Where you are has taken a back seat to What has happened to you.

You look down, and see not flesh but the white of a skeleton. It doesn't look good.

> Aight, I just want to try this out. I keep seeing people start Skeleton Quest threads, and then they get all butthurt because people make jokes, or they want to abuse the fact they're a skeleton. This isn't going to be like that, this is just going to be fun.

I have some vague ideas, I've been drinking, and I just want some shenanigans. The quest will be as serious or lighthearted as you want. After all, you've already died once, what's to worry about?

First thing, we'll get you to take a look at yourself. Obviously, you're a skeleton, but I want people to pick what kind and then I will assign some bonuses or abilities depending on what race you pick.

Rolling will be best of 3 d100, low is better.

I have a bunch of skeleton images that I'm not afraid to use.

Monster skelington, like a goblin or an orc. Something claws and sharp teeth. Broken arm, so we can get it replaced with something.
Also, OP, you know tg is pretty dead at this time of night, yes?
>>
>>40853245
I know tg is pretty dead, but I figured hey I'm here now. Also, I'm a night worker.

> Orc Skeleton - Crippled!

You see yourself clearly for the first time. Vague memories of orders come, march, stop, dig, lift. But the memories are only of impulses given separated only by when the orders changed. You can't remember any place you've been, any hole you've dug.

Your body seems to have been well suited to these orders though. A wide, barrel chest leads out to arms that reach down to your knees . . . well, arm. You seem to be at a loss for where your left arm is. It's not by your feet, bow legged and squat.

You decide to test them out, rising up and finding that you have surprisingly good balance for someone without any muscles. You stamp them a few times, and cast about for your missing piece.

> Orc body! You have Squat and Sturdy as a trait, and are harder to knock down!

It should be fairly easy to find your missing arm, not only is it longer than most of those attached to the bodies around you but it seems like the one you have also has rather long nails. Almost claws, one might say.

> Orc body! Natural weapon trait, instead of soft keratin nails like most homonids, you have strong bone spurs that would have stuck out of your flesh! +5 to H2H combat!

Finding your missing arm is more difficult than you seem. You cast about, rooting through the corpses without any luck, eventually returning to the spot you woke up in, for lack of a better term.

Oh. That circle you noticed, empty of any bodies, not even the ground disturbed unlike the rest of the . . . battle field? That you found yourself in. You realize with growing frustration that the edge of it comes right up to where your left side was.

You let out a bellow of rage. Except nothing actually comes out, and you just stand there with your one good arm cast out and your head thrown back. Somewhat embarrassed, you're glad nobody else around you appears to have been still alive to see that.
>>
I want to fuck that skeleton
>>
>>40853442
> Orc Body! Mute! You ain't got no vocal chords, so interacting with others is going to be more difficult!

> Orc Body! Monstrous Appearance! It will be more difficult for you to hide what you are!

Other possibilities were Human body, which would have come with speech, and no other bonuses.

Elf Body would have residual innate magic, and be more agile giving a ranged attack bonus, but would have also been more delicate.

Dwarf Body would have a damage soak due to thicker bones.

Halfling body would have been able to collapse itself into a pile o' bones, giving you the ability to disguise yourself or spring ambushes.

Okay, time to scavenge. You're on a battlefield, but one that's empty meaning one side won and picked most of the stuff clean. Give me some dice to see what you can find!
>>
>>40853496

You look down at the skeleton closest to you. It is somewhat collapsed in on itself, rotting armour and the splintered haft of some weapon it's only friends.

You vigorously grind your crotch on it to assert dominance. Where it fell to pieces, you held yourself together and stood . . . well, somewhat hunched over, but head and shoulders above this poor schmuck!

>>
>>40853690
Alright, now we're rolling!

> 24

Taking it, because tg is super dead and it's a loot roll anyways!

> under 25 (just barely), great success!

The battlefield has been thoroughly picked clean by whoever it was that won, but with this many bodies around there's plenty of things to choose from. You ignore the rest of the skeletons around you after noticing a trend among them, namely that their weapons and gear was apparently mostly decorative.

After getting excited at finding an intact if somewhat dinged up hand axe, and several pieces of armour that were almost still useable, you find a man who was pinned under a horse who appeared to have died from a broken neck, as opposed to the others who had their armour hacked to pieces, or with burns all over their body.

He is wearing armour that looks like the scales of a fish, overlapping plates of thin pieces of metal sewn to a leather shirt. You have a bit of difficulty getting it off him with only one arm, but in the end you are triumphant.

It fits somewhat poorly, but the fact that it was apparently designed to sit on top of a padded undershirt helps as you slide it over your head.

You are now flashy! While taking off the armour, you had to use your claws to cut around his arm eventually removing it. Memories of a taste you can't quite place dance through your mind.

> Scale Armour - protects against piercing and cutting weapons, and hides your skeletal shame from the world.

Additionally, it seems like he had a rather nice cloak to keep the elements from his fleshy body. You can hardly notice the mud, and thanks to his convenient manner of death there isn't even any blood all over it like every other piece of clothing you've seen strewn about.

It fits worse than the scale mail, but maybe now people will just think you're a one-armed monster from their childhood nightmares, instead of an undead one-armed monster!
>>
>>40853757
Hey, you are definitely broke right now. If you want to quest to find your (some?) family and work 24/7 with undead vigour for them, that's cool.

> Wat do?

Nothing much seems to be going on here. Everyone is pretty dead, and the crows are giving you snooty looks like they're upset you got back up when everyone else is just lying there for them to eat.

There is a river off to the west. It's a pretty good bet that either upstream or downstream there will be people eventually.

Maybe you could track the army that was here? You're not sure how good of an idea that is.

Otherwise, you could just wander around (1d10 for encounters)
>>
Rolled 4 (1d10)

>>40853798

Let`s find us some more clothes,if possible

and as for dead /tg/ , european anons are super awake
>>
>>40853824
Well, if you want there are clothes on the dead people. They're all fairly ragged, and have blood on them though. Right now you have a cloak that covers most of you due to your hunched posture and has a hood for your head, and the scale mail.

> 4!

Yeah, meeting up with an army seems like a bad plan, especially since you're not sure if your side won - or what side was yours for that matter. You amble off at a gentle pace in a random direction.

The field of battle is left behind you as you walk along gentle rolling hills. You soon run into cultivated fields, and eventually you run into a herd of sheep grazing in a lee between two hills. A shepherd is on the crest of one of the hills, lying down and possibly asleep.
>>

>>
>>40853914
If you know how Orc pelvises work, you might be able to guess. Otherwise you are a skeleton. But you can pick a gender to identify with.

>>40853929
Orc was picked. You know some basic Orcish runes, and some rude pictures.

You're going to be relying on gestures and body language for a bit.

You CAN learn to communicate, and speak if you try hard but honestly this is going to be one of the more difficult Skeleton bodies to do it with.
>>
>>40853929
Just to make it clear, the guy you're running into? He's a Shepard. People chose to wander off, and rolled for essentially a non-encounter.

You can approach him, stalk him, attack him, or try to find where he came from. Or write in.
>>
>>40853982
Let`s find out where he came from
>>
>>40853982
Not wanting to confront the Shephard, you circle around the other side of the hill the flock is on. While you aren't a tracker

> Aren't you? Were you?

Sheep aren't exactly subtle and it's fairly easy to see where they've passed along. You follow the tracks to a small house with a corral next to it. A dirt path leads up to the corral, and winds down further through the hills.

You don't see anybody around, it's entirely possible the shepherd lives alone.

> No man is an island, and all paths lead somewhere. Follow it to see if there's a village?

> Check out the house. Your skeletal shame eats at you, and while the cloak hides your body it's not clothing.

> Write in
>>
>>40854044
> Check out the house.
After all, laws apply only to the living
>>
>>40854061
You come up to the shepherds house. It's a fairly simple affair, four walls, a window with wooden shutters over it, and a door.

It's not even locked, that's nice. When you get in you can see why. There's a bed, a table, a dresser, and a fireplace. There is also a chest at the foot of the bed that catches your eye. Unlike the door, this appears to have a lock on it.

Okay, I'm going to need a roll here, 2d100, lower is better. 1 for opening the chest, 1 for what's inside. Since you're an Orc skeleton, you get a +5 bonus to the first roll (it would be more, but you currently only have one arm.)

Well, you certainly aren't going to be picking the lock, especially with only one arm. But what an arm it is! You swing down at the chest, and shatter it open with . . . Okay, you've dinged it up pretty good. You draw back again, and this time strike with your claws out, smashing through the wood around the lock and pulling it out. None can stand against your Orcish Undead fury! Opening the chest, you see within it

>>40854106

> 19! Great success!

The Shepherds sunday best! Looks like he has a nice doublet and pants. Clothes make the man, after all.

As well, there is a short sword that appears worn but cared for, and a small bag of coin. 20 gold richer and dressed to impress, you're ready to go to town! Well, at least you can maybe pass for a man as opposed to something that crawled out of a battlefield. It won't hold up to close examination, but hopefully people just look at the clothes.

> What do now?
>>
>>40854147
Find a main road,follow it.
Think really hard about getting a way to speak.
Also, make a mask form anything inside his house - a bag on head will work
>>
>>40854171

You would have got the clothes with 50-75, the money along with it at 25 - 50, and you got a useable if not as fancy as the clothes weapon for getting <25.

Speaking will come with interacting with people, and leveling. I'm thinking that leveling will come as a sort of "regaining memory" perk, you already have one tick towards tracking/hunting since you "tracked" the sheep's trail back to the house.

> Make a mask

While there isn't anything particularly suitable to making a mask in the shepherds home, you do find a cloth sack you could put over your head. While the hood of the cloak does help obscure your features, this will definitely prevent anyone from seeing you are a skeleton.

Won't do much to make them less suspicious of you though.

You gnash your jaw under your new sack, clattering away but not quite being able to form the words that you know are beneath the surface.

> I know speaking is kind of a brutal thing not to start with, you won't be stuck being mute for long.

>>40854234

>>
>>40854171
Actually, just about the communication thing.

For instance, with the Shepherd if you had approached him he would have been startled and spooked the sheep. You would then have had the option to flee, to attack, or to help him gather his sheep back up.

>>40854234

Well, so far you've robbed the first person you've seen. You feel kind of . . . bad? about this, maybe there's something you could do? You need the clothes, but do you really need the money or the sword?

> Leave the sword, the money, or both.

There isn't really much else you could do for him, unless you want to go back and try to communicate.
>>
>>40854247
We are a skeleton. We'll likely get attacked by guards or travellers if they see us. We'll need something to fight with.
>Keep the sword
>Return the cash
>Leave the closest thing you can to a note.
>>
>>40854247
As of now we don`t need money - to spend some you have to learn how to talk first
>>
>>40854255
You consider not taking anything, but needs must and you are a skeleton alone in the world. You decide to keep the sword, just in case you get attacked or decide to do some attacking.

The money, though? You haven't been cold, or tired, or hungry all day long so there aren't any pressing issues there. The living probably have more need of it, and you feel you've taken enough from the shepherd already.

You leave it behind, but looking at the mess you made of his chest it doesn't seem to be quite enough. You use the sword to awkwardly carve sorry in orcish runes into the lid of the chest, and a little man giving a shrug -_0_-, hoping he will understand that it wasn't anything personal.

You leave the house behind, and head down the road to see what's at the end of it.

It's a little disappointing. A small village with a palisade of sharpened logs sits before you. A lumber mill sits outside of it, and an inn with a small stable attached to it is by the gate. There don't appear to be any guards at the moment, but it seems like this land is dangerous enough to need a place for the surrounding people to run to when battles occur. Or possibly raiders? Either reason could be valid.

You are too far away to see if there are any horses at the stables, but the inn has a lit lantern in front of it.

>>40854296
Money can have a voice of it's own. Trying to interact with people might jar some memories lose though.

> You remember passing through gates like the one at the village. Sometimes you had to pay to get in, other times you . . . you . . . a red mist rises in your thoughts
>>
>>40854330
Usually villages like that have a healer ,or a witch hut nearby. That should be a priority
for now,head into the inn
>>
>>40854360
The tavern, it calls to you. As you get closer you see a sign proclaiming it to be "The Last Stop". You're not sure if that's a good sign or not.

As well, you notice that there are indeed a pair of horses in the stables. The seem rather large, and are most likely warhorses for carrying men into battle. A stable-hand is brushing them down, and there is some barding hanging up beside them.

Your travels have taken time, and dusk is falling. It is entirely possible that the gates will be closed soon, if you wanted to enter the village proper.

Alternatively, you can enter the inn. There are sure to be people there, but what is your plan for dealing with them?

> Ale, you remember ale. Gods, it's the clearest memory yet. Knocking one back with the boys after something, you can't remember what exactly but you remember the pride and the relief to be back. The taste of ale, the smell, the memory is the sharpest sensation you've had since you woke up.

> Unlocked! Comradery! Counts towards Speech!

You let out a low moan, surprising yourself.
>>
>>40854411
You also could have gotten this by helping the Shepherd, for example. But booze, oh sweet booze.

Man, the rolls have been pretty good here. Jesus. The call, the call to Alcohol, even in
death there is no escape.

Whether it's the memory of company, or the ale, you decide to risk going into the inn. You crack the door open and sidle inside. The interior is fairly basic, a large room with some tables and stairs at the back going up to rooms for travellers to stay at. You see two large men with packs beside them at a table by the bar, each one with a sword and a hammer sticking out. As well, a group of what are probably locals are enjoying a communal meal of some large pig-like creature and some drinks. Luckily, the waitress is occupied with playfully fending of their drunken approaches and nobody appears to notice as you take up a table in the back. It would appear that someone even left a cup of ale here that was forgotten about! You can't drink it, but you can remember.

There's only a fire for light, and a lamp by the bar, so you blend into the shadows and watch as the living get on with the business of life.

The two men by the bar occasionally cast glances towards the locals, they don't seem to be particularly impressed, and one of them laughs as the other makes some sort of comment after the last time they both looked over.

The bartender appears to be somewhat nervous, staying near the two men and occasionally smiling, no, wait, even on a human face that smile looks wrong.

1/2
>>
>>40854583

Eventually the waitress makes her way over to the two men, and talks with them a bit. You can't quite overhear what they're saying, but she doesn't seem to be appreciative of it. Finally, one of them flips her a coin and she responds by slapping him while flushing. As she turns to go one the men grabs her by the wrist as the other laughs.

The 12 locals at the other table take note of this and stand up. Looks like a fight might be brewing. What do?

> Try to sneak upstairs and check out the rooms

> See how it develops.

You stand up from your corner. Since nobody saw you come in, they sure as hell aren't expecting it when you come up to the two men and face them, stepping between the waitress and the man holding her.

"By the Mother's tits, what the fuck!"

Confronted by a well dressed figure wearing a cloak and scale mail would be shocking, but you feel that the bag over your head is what really sells it. Well, better than having him instantly attack for being undead.

"Who the fuck might you be then? The gimp they keep under the stairs? If that's the way this lasses tastes run, then at least I know it's not a matter of my coin for her refusing me"

Red. Red hair. The one talking to you has Red hair, the other blonde. You're not sure why you suddenly noticed this, but you realize that before you only saw them as places where the idea of "Soldier" was. Yes, definitely Soldier.

The blonde haired one is laughing harder now. He doesn't seem to be able to speak, finding the situation all too hilarious.

You're not sure why you got involved, you don't know who these men are, and you're a one-armed skeletorc who doesn't even know who he is and can't talk to anyone even to ask them.

But fuck this guy and his friend who thinks you're oh-so-funny.

You reach out from under your cloak with your one good hand, grabbing him by the throat and pushing him back choking off whatever sputtered curse he was going to spew at you next. You feel his throat shift under your boney fingers and his friend reaches out to grab you, freezing when he sees that you make the term "bony fingers" a literal thing.

Luckily, the waitress and locals are behind you, and the bartender seems to have disappeared.

Blondie is still staring at you, so you turn your head to stare back at him. You notice that you can see a reflection in his eyes, a blurred dark shape with a patch of brown where the sack-cloth is and two bright pinpoints of light suddenly flaring. You're not sure how you know, since last you checked you didn't have a nose, but you're pretty sure that whatever is doing it's job instead is good enough that you can tell he just wet himself.

It's too funny, too funny. These men, men who were possibly even involved in the battle you woke up after, are nothing more than scared little children before you.

You tilt your head back and begin to laugh. And laugh you do.

> Special trait! Horrifying shriek!

The sound that comes from you is unlike any laughter that belongs on this earth, if anyone where ever to recognize it as such. It starts as a low whistle, piping and wheezing before catching somehow and rattling the bones in your throat. It rises in volume steadily and you find this to make it even funnier.

Soon you're laughing uncontrollably, with eerie echoes racking the room and somewhere in there is the scream of a man damned beyond caring about punishment or redemption, a lonely sound that has a sick attraction as if inviting you to see the joke that mortality is.

Blondie passes right out, and Red is frantically flailing at you now desperate to get away. He's too frightened to do anything effective though, just pushing and slapping at your hand.

You're not sure what happened to the others in the inn, but it's now just you and two men.

And fuck, your laughter ends as your jaw falls off inside your mask.

You can moan in various pitches, and you have a terrible laugh now. Ideally you will eventually be able to actually speak.

As for the rolls, the one for grabbing was to see if you could do it without people noticing your skeleton hand. You just barely passed, so only the guy you grabbed and his buddy noticed. The Bartender ducked out as soon as you got up and pushed your way into the situation because he is genre savvy.

It would have been you against the whole bar if the other people saw it.

The laugh I figured was a good way to make progress towards talking, and also to intimidate the two soldiers a bit. I was prepared to make it uncomfortable and creep out the other patrons if you failed. Then you crit-failed, so I decided instead of creepy it was going to be terrifying. But since it DID crit-fail, you also lost your jaw. Talking is right off the table until you fix that shit.

Anyways, what are you going to do about the two soldiers? They know your secret! They also aren't bodies yet.
>>
>>40854946
1 vote for killing the soldiers. 1 is unconscious, and Red is panicked with your hand around his throat.

If you want to crush his throat one handed, I'm going to need a roll. Alternatively, you can try and stab him with the sword.

You have a penalty to crushing his throat, you're not weak (+5 for Orc) but you only have one hand. Lets say a penalty of 15 for that.

Stabbing him doesn't have a penalty, but Red will roll to escape from you.

Just saying this now, there are ways to replace your arm, and fix your jaw. There are neat ways, and messy ways.
>>
>>40854966
K, so stab, crush throat, or other. 10 point penalty (15 one armed throat crush -5 Orc strength) for throat crush.

Blondie is out for the moment, and doesn't seem like he's going to be a problem. But Red's flailing is getting less panicked and . . . Jesus, that would have hurt if you still had been alive. Right in the face. Okay, enough of this, you just want him to be quiet now, you need a moment to get yourself together (literally) and figure out what just happened and

FUCKER! Again in the face!

You squeeze down with your one good arm. You even swear you can feel your missing arm come up to choke him too but it stubbornly remains absent. JUST SHUT UP ALREADY SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP AND STOP HITTING ME.

Finally! Red seems to have calmed down. A lot. As a matter of fact, he seems to be dead now. Well, no great loss to the world as far as you're concerned. Huh, looks like your thumb claw pushed right into his throat, piercing it.

You look down at Blondie. Should you let him live? Were he and Red close, will he hunt you? It seems a little excessive to kill a man, but after losing his friend

> You're holding someone. They aren't moving anymore, they're not talking, they're not breathing, but they're still holding back onto you hand clenched in your shirt. Your face is wet, and a feeling of loss overwhelms you as you slowly feel them stop holding you back. You can't stop wetting your face, fluid, tears. Tears are running down your face and the sadness turns to rage.

You scream and lash out at Blondie, driving your hand into his face claws first. He doesn't even wake up as you start to shred the body, overcome with grief and rage at losing someone you can't even remember. You're screaming again, not like before just a harsh wheezing sound as your mangled jaw tries to form a name that you don't know.

Finally, you stop your frenzy. You are alone in a bar with two corpses. Their packs are still beside the bar, luckily untouched by the gore from your breakdown.
>>
>>40855092
WELL THEN. Attempt to remember a bit more. Then loot everything and head into the woods. We're going to need to avoid the hype for a while.

> Loot! You have two traveling packs! But you can't carry everything.

> 2 warhammers. 3ft long with a flat head and a spiked back end.

> 2 1 handed broadswords.

> 2 Bedrolls, assorted soldier supplies consisting of short lengths of rope (2), various food items, firestarters etc. You can now be a successful hobo in the woods if you so choose, or needed creature comforts like some breather.

> Money! Between them both they had 35 gold, an 50 silver. This is a fair amount of money in this world, a room and dinner + breakfast would cost about 1 gold 5 silver. 1 gold is worth 10 silver. A good weapon would run about 10 gold.

> Memory unlocked. Sorrow and Loss! You understand names now, and know you've forgotten someone's. Also, apparently your own. What is your name??

>>40855128

Dude voted to kill them both, nobody contradicted it. You smashed his face in and pretty much killed him by stabbing your claws into his unprotected face into his brain.

If you want, you can grab an arm and try to stick it on to you later, there'll be a roll and some things there.

>>40855138

Blood is all over the place dude. Sorry man. Regaining your memories is going to be traumatic, and there are some triggers for combat. You aren't going to freak out every time, this was just kind of a plot thing going on.

You can stay and try to clean it up, but those villagers might be coming back . . . . Still, if you want to try it and roll for it I won't stop you.

Keep in mind a good number of people were there for the whole shriek thing, and you have one arm to move these bodies with and hide them somewhere they won't be found.
>>

No, you can't carry everything. It's two full packs of gear and with only one arm it would unbalance you too much.

I mean, I guess I hate to say you can't do anything, but there would be pretty serious penalties for trying.

So far it seems

Loot 1 Broadsword, and one set of supplies? Or both? And an arm. Anon, I will always assume you take the money unless you say otherwise.

>>40855205

Blondie was just passed out from the shriek, not knocked out or being kept unconscious.. He would have woken up while you were looting him, so I took that as a go-ahead for writing what I did.

>>40855213

2 corpses, unless you want a ret-con.

>>
>>40855219
We're an orc skeleton right? Take at least one of every available weapon. We should be right at home with them, especially considering we woke up on a battlefield
>>
>>40855177

This is not good. You just drove off a bar full of locals with some out of control laughter, killed a man, freaked out, and killed another man.

Operating back on auto-pilot, this time you move with more determination. The equipment in the packs feels familiar in your hands as you gather up some of the supplies. You leave the bedrolls behind, you haven't had to sleep yet and might not ever need to, and pack everything into one of the traveling packs. You toss the food to make room, and then turn to the weapons.

Both swords are of similar make and quality, as are the hammers. Not having a preference for either, you grab one of each. A hammer of any sort can come in useful for more than fighting, after all, and it would be nice to have something with a bit more range than the shepherds short sword.

Carrying about as much as you can with one arm . . . Huh. Well, neither of these guys are using theirs anymore. You take the sword and cut off Red's arm, the one he grabbed the waitress with and stick it through the top of the pack, leaving it hanging partly out.

In a moment of giddy whimsy, you give it a high five over your shoulder.

Time to go. You leave the Tavern by a door in the back, you don't know for sure but those villagers will probably be coming back as soon as they get numbers, or possibly some sort of professional guards to come in.

Heading towards the saw-mill, you go upstream where the logs come from. Logs mean trees, trees mean a forest, somewhere you can hide and figure out what to do next.

Night has fallen and nearly fully passed by the time you stop. The moon is low, and it's a clear night. Hopefully, not having to rest means you got enough of a lead that no-one will follow you. You've found a dense copse of trees, with long branches that hang down and form curtains with moss growing on them. You sit down, and set up your minimalist camp.

1/2
>>
>>40855323
...define minimalist camp
>>
>>40855323
Okay! There are some options here.

> Try to fix your jaw. Something has to be holding you together, maybe it just needs some love?

> Try to replace your arm! You don't know what happened exactly to yours, but you don't think it's ever coming back.

Do you want to try to pray? You can't think of any gods at the moment, but you know they exist. 1d5 and 1d100 to see who answers and how effective it is, 2d100 if you're doing both the jaw & arm.

> Try to recall your memories.

You've had a few experiences come back. Options are Tracking/Hunting (sheep), War (village gates), Comrades/Booze (Inn), and Vengeance (Killing Blondie).

Comrades/Booz and Vengeance will count towards Speech as well as other things, Tracking/Hunting and War will let you recall skills.

>>40855366

Minimalist Camp essentially means you put your stuff down and hunkered under a tree. You don't have any tents or bedrolls because you left them behind, and you haven't had any reason to start a fire. You can if you want to for some reason.

Shit, forgot to give you the other options for fixing yourself. Pray is one. Will is another, you can try to jam it on and essentially tell it to work.

Meditation is an option as well, you don't have any bonuses to it but you can try to feel the force that holds you together and guide it instead of forcing it.

Finally, there was some needle and thread in the gear you took. You were in a rush, so you didn't really examine it closely, just kind of grabbed it totally using this to just have things like this available. If it's reasonable to have in a soldiers pack, you have it

First things first. Whatever that laugh/scream was back there, your jaw fell off when it happened. Luckily, you already had a sack over your head so it didn't go anywhere even with all the fighting . . . okay, choking a bitch and butchering an unconscious person.

You carefully pull the sack from your head, catching your jaw as it falls out. Well, at least it fell out in one piece. Hey! You still even have all your teeth, including two large ones that almost qualify as tusks. They have been decorated with steel runes. Did that hurt? You feel . . . pain, when you look at them. It's already an unusual sensation for you who hasn't felt anything yet so far.

Still, unless you want to be just a shambling monster in the woods, this is going to need to be fixed. But how? You stare at your jaw, as if it would speak on it's own and answer you. Please? That would be just wonderful.

But it would appear that's just not going to happen. Rotten Laughs and Tears! The curse comes from nowhere. But that can't be true, it had to come from somewhere, the same place all those other memories came from.

You decide to pray. It's not the most reverent prayer, but then again you get the feeling he's not the most reverent god.

Oh Magician in the Sky,
You of plans spun from lies,
Tell me this and let it be said.

Let it being said,
Let it be true.

And once it's true,
It will no longer be a lie.

Hokey, the trickster god. The one who makes plans, but not to see them succeed but to see them fail. The liar who lies so well the universe believes him, and finds it's valuables stolen before it realizes what went on.

He doesn't have any strong feelings one way or the other about the undead, thankfully, but . . . he's less of a God you worship, and more a God you convince. Anything for a laugh is his motto. If you can figure out a way to make it ironic, or funny, or just plain cruel sometimes even, then he'll probably grant your prayers.

Probably.

....Incoming Chaotic Neutral divine magic ork. This is best plan. I see nothing wrong.

>Contact the God. Offer to become the original Ork skeleton joke source

>>40855654
Those who pray to him too often tend to have their prayers granted in unpleasant ways.

Hopefully, he'll think an undead mute orc trying to fix his jaw to be funny. But he kind of has a shit sense of humour.

>>40855452
>32! Success!

You place your jaw back on your face, checking to make sure it's properly set before trying to mouth your way through the words again. Even if you can't speak, it doesn't hurt to try. And, once again, hopefully he finds it amusing.

There's no great flash of light, no sensation of rightness or suddenly being together again. You wait until the sun comes up, and finally accept that your prayers are going to go unanswered. Guess your suffering is more amusing. You let out a sigh, and drop your hands away.

Wait. You sigh again, and then moan with joy, and then shriek with laughter! A deer runs out of the wood, and smiles at you, and then begins to laugh with you as well, laughing and laughing until it can't breathe and falls out.

> Horrifying Shriek is now Infectious Laughter! Why? Because you got the God that's a dick! Opponents in range, as well as friendlies, have to roll against it to not break out in laughter as well. Roll each round in combat to try and stop.

> This happens out of combat if the MC laughs! It's infectious! And unpleasant right now, but maybe later down the line it will change.

Well, that felt good, although your god probably could have let you know a little earlier that he had answered your prayer.

Oh well, at least you don't have to worry about breaking any rules with him.
>>
>>40855731
>not have to worry about breaking rules

>>
>>40855731
hey,we got the pun game now!
>>
>>40855721

Yeah, he's the kind of guy you don't pray to help you out unless you're really desperate. You pray to him more to screw the other guy over.

Ideally, you try to pretend he doesn't exist. But in a world with Definite Gods, you don't want to worship no gods because they take offense to that.

There's a God of Death and Decay (1), a Goddess of War and Rebirth (the one the Soldier swore by - there's a reason they call her a Mother), Hokey, a God of "Humanity" - but it's more like fantastic racism because all races claim he's the god of THEIR race, even though he's the same God. It's only normal the lesser races would delude themselves into thinking he was their God though. Finally, there's the God of the World, which is pretty much Gaia/Nature gestalt. Kind of Druidy, kind of "Abhors the unnatural" which ranges from magical abominations to technological advances.
>>
>>40855782
...you know what? let's keep with the trickster God. It would be more novel and interesting. Underused ideas are more betterer
>>
>>40855731
Well, you have your jaw back. That's a start. Still, you can't help but think how things could have gone differently if you had managed to talk to people at the inn.

Heck, even the shepherd could have filled you in hopefully on what the battle was, where you were, what year it was, what you were, if you could still eat mutton as a zombie. You sigh again. Then you moan. Then sigh. Then moan. Then moooooooaaaaannnn. Okay, now you feel like you're just perpetuating the stereotype. You can make sound, so you should be able to speak. Why is this so damn hard! You gnash your tusks together, goddamnit you don't even know your own name!

A name . . . . you remember trying to think of a name back at the Inn. You remember the feeling of loss, anger, hurt. The most vivid feeling you remembered, the most vivid feeling until you saw the steel runes on your teeth. You know they said something, meant something once.

They dance in your thoughts as you spin them out in your imagination. It hurts again now, as you look at each rune and try to piece them together. They tell a story, they are a memory in physical form that stayed with you after death, they're a reason, your reason.

> Vengeance

They're your son's. Oh, god, your son. YOUR SON. You had forgotten him and now you almost wish you didn't remember. And the self-loathing that comes with that thought, that weakness and betrayal of him brings back more memories.

He was yours, your legacy. One day he would surpass you, but not until you had taught him everything you knew and he had learned some things you didn't. You weren't supposed to fight him until you were old, and weak. A last service from father to son, from son to father. You give him your place in the tribe, he would give you one last fight so you could die standing and be remembered as strong and proud.

But the Hrruugggh . . The HrrrRAAAGH . . The Houngan! The damned spirit speakers and their meddling.
>>
>>40855893
Spirit Speakers.... Wait. As in not!Necromancers?

Potentially behind our resurrection?

HUNT THE BASTARDS DOWN. WE NOW HAVE MORE REASON THAN ONE
>>
>>40855844

You never had much time for them, or their spirits, or their politics. You had a job, an important job, you were a voice within the tribe.

You had a job, and they were always pushing, always meddling. Dripping poison into the ears of the people whenever they didn't get their way. Never content with guarding the spirits of the people, and guiding them through death. Wanting to control their lives as well, no matter the cost. After all, what were the dead to them but another member of the tribe, one they had complete control over?

Always whispering, whispering to the young. To your son. Your son of all people . . .

He challenged you too soon. It wasn't an honour, but a theft he was pushed into by those vipers. Always telling him he would be in your shadow, that he wasn't good enough. He was the best, damn them to the Maze. He was the best.

But you were still better. Better, but not good enough in the end. You tried to pull the blow, you didn't think he would jump in so aggressively, so . . . stupidly. You didn't think he would truly believe that because you spoke first that it was because you had become weak.

And so you held him, held him as your star faded, calling out his name that you branded on your teeth so that every word would praise him and carry his memory.

"WAugustus" You whisper it, in your mind and taste the word pass your lips. "AUGUSTUS!" And you scream his name.

You remember his last words, as you cried his name into his hair. "Vlad . . . Father. . . it's cold"

You too are cold now, same as him. But a fire has been lit inside you. It might consume you, it might blaze low, but you will never let it go out again.
>>
>>40855978
Well at least we can speak now.

>Acquired targets
>Acquired speech
>>
>>40855911
Spirit Speakers are just that. They inter the dead of the tribe, take care of the graves, act as mediators between members of the tribe, and speak with the Ancestors to hear their wisdom, guidance, and love.

Necromancy is not something they've been known to practice. So, whether or not they're responsible for Vlad's condition or not Or if his tribe still exists, he doesn't know how much time has passed after all is still undetermined.

Vlad still has a ways to go to find out how he came to be on that battlefield, who made him undead, etc. He doesn't even remember what his position in the tribe is, just that he killed his son because politics are a bitch.

Well, I feel like this went fairly well for not planning a damn thing and writing charts up as I asked people to roll. But it's late, and I need to crash. Like 8am here now.

It's always more fun writing with people. And dice. Seriously, I planned for a more organic way to gain speech, but it just didn't happen.

Honestly not sure if I'll go anywhere with this, probably not start at 1am again if I do though.

IDK, I'm unsure about the horrifying shriek to infectious laughter but learning how to speak seemed like a bigger thing than I planned, and then getting the Magician god just kind of pulled it all together.

Seriously, I had it planned so that no matter what you did in the inn (except leave still without interacting with anyone) was going to end up with you gaining some speech.

>>40856063

You're going to be lopsided, and still only have +5 to H2H combat/strength rolls because it won't be a sturdy Orc arm.

Right now you guys are kind of on the Chosen One path. You have a Vengeance, and the interference of a God. Notice I didn't say blessing or help. Shit's going to get all Greek up in this if you aren't careful.
>>
>>40856040
Also, bad rolls are just as important as good rolls. I don't believe in coddling so that you always win, but one bad roll won't kill you and there will always be a way out or another option to take.

Like I said, even the critfail? The "punishment" was that you lost the opportunity to develop some speech skills, instead it went horribly wrong and you gained a negative speech skill.

Nobody was going to be happy when you laughed, and instead of making it easier to interact with people it was going to make it harder. You weren't going to have control over it, is where I'm going.

I was totally going to make it so that it happened every time someone made a joke in thread.

But . . . trickster god. So he's given you a chance to control it. Always give them a chance, and smile. You're marked now, boyo

>>
>>40856170
Maybe Sunday if I get to it? I seriously just kind of threw a bunch of half-assed ideas together for this and went with how people played it out. If I run it again, I would like to have the next bit be a bit more structured. Figure out a setting for our location, who the battle was between, the domains, hell the NAMES of the other gods. I just kind of kludged some stuff together and was like "Meh, sounds fun enough".

I was so proud of that Inn. I figured you could either become friends with the Soldiers, or the locals, save the maid or screw up and scare her away, it all depended on how much of your superior Bonage you revealed but I was determined you would talk to SOMEONE damn it. I mean, first you guys wander into the wilderness, then you avoid the shepherd, and finally decide to go to an Inn? Full of people, in a public place, where there's people who's job it is to interact with you?

Happy with how it turned out though, if it's going to be a clusterfuck might as well have it be a big one.

>>40856165
Yep, crits should always be "something happens in a big way". I mean, you can roll to punch the moon and crit succeed, and you will jump up and do a perfect Dragon Punch, but you ain't gonna punch the moon.

Since it was the first thread, and kind of a wonky feel it out chargen, though, I felt it was a good opportunity to give Vlad some character. A horrifying shriek when he's trying to laugh? NO! NO NORMAL LIVING THINGS FOR YOU. YOU ARE AN UNDEAD ABOMINATION, AND YOU WON'T BE ALLOWED TO FORGET IT.
>>
>>40856234
Hell, even if you drove everyone off I was going to try and have you search the Inn and find the Bartender cowering. You could have played spooky charades and developed speech.

I was *this* close to only having you speak Orcish after finally regaining speech, but I figured that would be too frustrating.
